A few reasons Georgia Bulldogs fans should feel great (or not)

Isaiah Crowell showed some nifty moves again Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Isaiah Crowell showed some nifty moves again Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

A few more reflections on why a Georgia Bulldogs fan should feel great after the win over Mississippi State …

Isaiah Crowell might have a long way to go in terms of SEC caliber stamina, and he’s also still looking for his first long touchdown run after Saturday’s apparent 49-yard scamper was ruled out of bounds. But he’s already shown he has the moves to be a big-time running back. His elusiveness on that erstwhile scoring run brought quite a few wows from the crowd. …

The defense continues to impress and improve, breaking up more passes in the past couple of weeks than a Bulldog fan can remember seeing in a long time. …

Brandon Boykin returning punts as well as kickoffs is a smart move on the part of the Georgia coaching staff. He had two nice returns Saturday and it’s a pretty safe bet he’s going to break another long one all the way sometime soon. …

One of the big reasons the D is looking so good lately is Sanders Commings, who against MSU had three tackles, returned a fumble, snagged an interception and broke up two other passes that he almost (and perhaps should have) intercepted, one of which he easily could have scored on. …

It was great seeing Christian Robinson back on the field calling the defensive signals in the two-minute defense and on third downs. …

And thanks to the losses Saturday by South Carolina and Florida, the Dawgs still have more to play for than just pride.

Too bad Cornelius Washington didn't confine his celebrating to the field Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin /AJC)

Too bad Cornelius Washington didn't confine his celebrating to the field Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin /AJC)

Of course, there are also a few reasons for Dogs fans still to feel a bit uneasy …

The continuing struggles of the field goal unit and the second-half disappearing act of the offense for the second straight week. …

The sneaking suspicion that Mark Richt continuing to show a lack of faith in his offense in short-yardage situations might be turning into a self-fulfilling prophecy. At least Richt understood the boos after he opted to go for a field goal on fourth-and-short only to see the kick muffed. “If I was up in the stands, I wouldn’t have too thrilled about those couple of plays either,” he said.

Cornelius Washington’s celebrating of his best game as a Dog lasting a bit too long, resulting in him being suspended for the next two games just as he was really starting to click as a pass-rusher. …

CBS’ Gary Danielson saying that Saturday’s results leave Georgia “in the driver’s seat” in the SEC East. True or not, I’d much rather the Dogs continue operating under the radar of the national sports media for now. …

And after a glorious fall day in Athens, I wasn’t the only fan lamenting that the schedule will keep the Dogs away from Sanford Stadium for the next five weeks, meaning no more home games during the absolutely best month of football weather.

What has you feeling good or not so good about the Dawgs at this point in the season?

newyearsamedawgfans,
“UGA is stronger and faster than Bama and Flordia. 90% chance UGA wins SEC and gets a shot for national championship. That comment is BS. How do you play for a National Championship with more than 3 losses?

Georgia has to focus on eliminating mistakes…penalties, missed scoring opportunities, and short yardage situations. This MUST BE A ONE GAME AT A TIME TEAM. Focus on the task at hand and do not worry about what the rest of the league is doing.

Tennessee is still in rebuilding mode. However, no Bulldog should discount their talent, their coaching, or the advantage playing at home gives the Vols. Georgia must play their game and respect the football.

I’m a die hard Dog fan but I must say…………….we beat Miss St and now our fans are comparing us to Ala………..BIG…BIG….differences between us and Bama……

1. Defenses maybe…. but I will tell you that (it’s obvious to any real football fan) that the offensive play calling and the ability to manage (outcoach) the other team is in strong favor of Alabama….not even close

The Alabama team is better prepared and play so much more disciplined than UGA does. Alabama QB looks like a 5th year senior against Fla…ours threw 3 picks against Miss St…..

WE HAVE A Long way to go before we are ready to match up against Bama and LSU…………We have the talent…..

we need a better offensive game plan….more discipline from the head coach…….see how many times we celebrate after a first down………Bama didn’t celebrate that much after scoring touchdowns against Fla…..

I’m sick of UGA depending on other teams to loose so we can win the east………Bottom Line is UGA wins the rest of Richt and Bobo must GO!

I am a dog fan, but did yall watch Alabama? Geez, what a defense, they are fast and physical. No one in there right mind should even be talking about SEC CG, Vandy gives UGA fits, and do NOT even mention, “we stack up well against FL.” Remember what has happened 18 of the last 21 years? Having said that….Go Dawgs…win the next one and I’ll be happy.

Can you only imagine what our offense would look like under someone like Mike Leach?
We have the playmakers, but Bobo doesnt have the imagination.

Bruce Figgins has zero rushes this year. Thats incomprehensible. WE have a 275 pound fullback and on 3rd and lass than a foot we don’t use him.
Remember Southerland and Chapas ? We sure let them tote the rock on short yardage situations didnt we ?

On a positive note Mitchell and Bennett are reminding me of Green and Durham in their freshman years. Still have a ways to go but the potential is there. They will be playmakers.

UGA simply needs to defeat UT nicely in Knoxville and then on to Vandy. Period.

We need to crawl well before we walk to the Ga Dome and play ANYBODY. Period.

Let us win the next game, because if we do not, then in 2012 we have a new HC. One game at a time. If CMR takes us anywhere, it must be a win over UT, Vandy and KY and AU and Florida and GT. THEN and only then do we talk about anything else.

UT is our BOWL GAME …………….THEN VANDY,etc.

October 3rd, 2011

Alabama is far and away the best team in the SEC. I notice even that their CBs and Safeties look like our LBS. Their LBs look like our D Ends and are mobile and so fast.

Their QB is typical under Saban. He is a play book manager and our QB Murray is NOT THAT. AM is Orson Charles AA campaign director, trying to make Charles an AA when he is NOT AA material.

Alabama and LSU are the very best in our league, then maybe SC, Arkansas, AU and Georgia followed by the the rest …………….which is not saying a whole lot at this moment.

I was merely pointing out that it doesn’t take much for doggie fans to jump back on the bandwagon and proclaim an SEC championship caliber team. It’s great to be a fan of your team, but at least be realistic about it. And UGA may beat GT again, but it won’t be because any of you doggies declare it to be so on this blog. Loser.

Murray throwing 3 more picks, 1 for a TD is cause for alarm. He throws some nice balls sometimes but he mixes in plenty of dumb decisions and bad one’s too. Not ready to pull the plug on him but if the offense wouldn’t go V-A-N-I-L-L-A in the 2nd half when they are up (maybe making it 35-10) then Hutson Mason could get a little work in.

UGA continues to do just enough to win. Sooner or later they are going to have to step on somebody’s face and put games away.

Is anybody else concerned about Crowell’s acknowledgment that he takes himself out of games if he’s “tired or hurts or something like that” We need him to tote the rock at least 30 times per game. We don’t have other viable alternatives. See the 2nd half against State. This is the Knowshon Moreno syndrome. I can’t see the top coaches present or past putting up with such prima dona stuff. GATA coaches. This guy is good but he needs to suck it up and go “Hershel” if he wants to be great.

Here we go again! We win a couple of games and now look out we are the greatest thing since sliced bread. There are FOUR teams in the West that are better than UGA.

We beat a Miss St. team that has quit. They came into the season thinking they were going to beat Auburn bad, and compete with LSU and Bama for the West title. They quit.

We have a favorable schedule with Auburn and Tech being the toughest games. UT will be tough at Knoxville but they aren’t that good and Florida has lost Brantley.

CMR said on the radio after the game that UGA fans needed to be happy regardless of how poorly they played because this is the SEC. Richt needs to understand……The unit in which he is responsible for is the only unit that plays like crap consistently. They defense is lights out and is the only reason we are 3-2 instead of 1-4. The past 2 games have been terrible for Bobo and a change is needed asap. I don’t know what that change is but we have too many playmakers and size to be this inconsistent on offense.

From top to bottom the SEC is the Best. Take the bottom SEC team and put them against the bottom of any other conferance and the SEC team wins.

MSU didn’t quit. Grantham’s defense shut them down

What is amazing to me is that we have gone full circle.

We now win the same way we did with BVG. Defense shuts the other team down and the offense does just enough to get by.

I truly wish Richt would go back to calling plays and talking to Murray during the games like he did with Greene and Shockley. Bobo can stay on and recruit and be QB coach, but not OC.

Washington… are you kidding me? This should be the last straw.
1. We have no depth at LB so there is no pressure from the next guy on the depth chart taking your spot
2. Why is there not just a flat policy – do not drink. There is no moderation in these guys, they do not have a beer or two, they get tanked. I partied hard at UGA but I wasn’t given a scholarship in exchange for football and I didn’t represent the university.
3. It’s time for the captains to Code Red a towel party for Washington and any other yahoo that doesn’t put the team above drinking.

Richt 5 games into the season:
1. Got embarassed by a very well-coached team in game one.
2. Got beat by an average football team in game 2. It doesn’t matter how or why.
3. Beat a glorified high school football team in game 3.
4. Beat a bad team with no offense in game 4.
5. Beat another bad team with no offense in game 5.

Even if Richt backs into an SEC East title, Saban or Miles would make Richt look like a fool in the SEC Championship game. Should UGA fans be Happy?

Keep feeling great? About what, a possible 8-4 or 7-5 season? Just another mediocre re-building year for a program that has not even been in national title contention in the past 10, 20, or 30 years?

UGA is on a roll by beating 3 of the worst teams in college football, now all of a sudden the pressure is off? This is excatly the reason this program is such a joke.
