A few reasons Georgia Bulldogs fans should feel great (or not)

Isaiah Crowell showed some nifty moves again Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Isaiah Crowell showed some nifty moves again Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

A few more reflections on why a Georgia Bulldogs fan should feel great after the win over Mississippi State …

Isaiah Crowell might have a long way to go in terms of SEC caliber stamina, and he’s also still looking for his first long touchdown run after Saturday’s apparent 49-yard scamper was ruled out of bounds. But he’s already shown he has the moves to be a big-time running back. His elusiveness on that erstwhile scoring run brought quite a few wows from the crowd. …

The defense continues to impress and improve, breaking up more passes in the past couple of weeks than a Bulldog fan can remember seeing in a long time. …

Brandon Boykin returning punts as well as kickoffs is a smart move on the part of the Georgia coaching staff. He had two nice returns Saturday and it’s a pretty safe bet he’s going to break another long one all the way sometime soon. …

One of the big reasons the D is looking so good lately is Sanders Commings, who against MSU had three tackles, returned a fumble, snagged an interception and broke up two other passes that he almost (and perhaps should have) intercepted, one of which he easily could have scored on. …

It was great seeing Christian Robinson back on the field calling the defensive signals in the two-minute defense and on third downs. …

And thanks to the losses Saturday by South Carolina and Florida, the Dawgs still have more to play for than just pride.

Too bad Cornelius Washington didn't confine his celebrating to the field Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin /AJC)

Too bad Cornelius Washington didn't confine his celebrating to the field Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin /AJC)

Of course, there are also a few reasons for Dogs fans still to feel a bit uneasy …

The continuing struggles of the field goal unit and the second-half disappearing act of the offense for the second straight week. …

The sneaking suspicion that Mark Richt continuing to show a lack of faith in his offense in short-yardage situations might be turning into a self-fulfilling prophecy. At least Richt understood the boos after he opted to go for a field goal on fourth-and-short only to see the kick muffed. “If I was up in the stands, I wouldn’t have too thrilled about those couple of plays either,” he said.

Cornelius Washington’s celebrating of his best game as a Dog lasting a bit too long, resulting in him being suspended for the next two games just as he was really starting to click as a pass-rusher. …

CBS’ Gary Danielson saying that Saturday’s results leave Georgia “in the driver’s seat” in the SEC East. True or not, I’d much rather the Dogs continue operating under the radar of the national sports media for now. …

And after a glorious fall day in Athens, I wasn’t the only fan lamenting that the schedule will keep the Dogs away from Sanford Stadium for the next five weeks, meaning no more home games during the absolutely best month of football weather.

What has you feeling good or not so good about the Dawgs at this point in the season?

I think we more talented than Boise but they qb is unbelieveable. We beat ourself vs SC. But SC has Garcia so thats at least 3 dumb losses. Florida won’t win for a long time. Tenn is not that good. All we gotta do is run it down they throat.

As I watch film on Tyler Bray, that guy is tall as hell but he doesn’t have real good mobility. He’s the Ryan Mallett for Tennessee. He’s tall and can see the entire field but his mobility is lacking. If you get to him, don’t worry about him running away from you because it won’t happen. He tends to stare down his receivers as well. Remember Tennessee has only played one tough game. They are still finishing up their cupcakes. They’ve played Montana, Cincinnati, Florida, and Buffalo. Eating too many cupcakes to start the season. The one real game they played, they lost.

That Boise game still puzzles me. It almost seems like Georgia came out with a game plan to wait and see what Boise does instead of taking control and winning the game.

Well unfortunately, this will be the first time we’ve faced Bray as the starter for Tennessee. Last season Phillip Sims was their starting QB and we ate him up and won 41-14. It’ll be different this time. Bray is a good QB. We have to put tons of pressure on him and remember he’s young and hasn’t faced any real stiff competition yet so if you put him under pressure he’s bound to make mistakes.

Yeah he did start after we played them…I think we beat Tenn easy as long as we don’t get caught up in the road environment. This might be the only truly hostile road game we have this year.

UGA has a better shot at beating LSU than it does Alabama. If I had to choose between Alabama or LSU, it’s LSU all day. LSU just doesn’t seem as tough as Alabama. LSU is good don’t get me wrong, they’re damn good, but Alabama is a machine. I think we could beat LSU, Bama not so much. But any given day right? Never know what could happen.

What I don’t understand is how Walsh keeps missing field goals, including that chip shot against Ole Mrs. Wasn’t he a Groza finalist before? I can’t tell whether it is his holder (the punter?) or something in his head. UGA needs to get that fixed fast. Maybe that QB from Camden County can kick for you.

But even as a UGA fan, it’s still to early to be talking SEC championship. Let’s just beat Tennessee and focus on taking it one game at a time and then when the time gets here, we’ll talk about it. We could lose to Tennessee and it be all for not. So let’s slow down, I know we’re gettin excited, but let’s see how this thing plays out. Where are the haters? Hmmmm must be still licking their wounds from the beatdown they got from Bama, and the SC trolls must be licking theirs too.

“Tennessee put their numbers up against inferior teams.”

LIke UGA the past two years. Feeling pretty tough after winning three against that murderer’s row of Coastal Carolina and the two weak sisters from the state of Mississippi. Get back to me when you beat someone with a pulse.

Ralph

“UGA is stronger and faster than Bama and Flordia. 90% chance UGA wins SEC and gets a shot for national championship but their wins against Gators and Tide must be double digits. Richt will be given a contract extension next Sunday to help with recruiting.”

Comparing UGA to Alabama is laughable. What is your record against the Gators over the past two decades? You can not give Boise State a decent game and you award yourself yet another fictional national title after beating up on three pitiful opponents.

Whaw!

“I agree that we are better than Alabama and Florida. Georgia really is a better team that most people give them credit for.”

Typical dawg. I am rooting for you to win the depleted SEC East so LSU or Bama can give you a realistic picture of where you really stand.

Murray is beginning to be a liability. I didn’t think so but someone said he hasn’t beat a team with a winning record other than Tech. I think that’s still true. This week will be a test. I’m hoping he’s got the miscues out of his system.

D looks great and hope it’s not just because the last few teams were weak on the O. I know Mrs. State has a good running game but they are loosing linemen and that will slow any running and passing game down.

I think it’s a little early to call the DAWGS champs yet. Much work to be done. Take it one game at a time and see where we end up.

Longest 4th quarter ever when MY team was ahead. Go to line, stand and look at sideline until the play is called in with 8 seconds left on the play clock, snap the ball with 1 second left to run inside for a 2-4 yard gain, and then do it all over again. Good grief! It’s not like MSU was an offensive juggernaut who was going to score a TD the minute they got the ball. Did you see Alabama run out the clock last night against Florida? They did it by scoring TDs and it worked well. I stayed at Sanford until the end but could not blame the fans who left early when they realized the last quarter would be agonizing to watch and we would not be seeing any subs.

Why can’t we put points on the board so we can get some PT for the guys who practice hard and never get to play? Why not get Mason some experience? Who will howl loudest and make excuses if Murray gets hurt and we have to play Mason?

3rd down and an inch at midfield. Toss the ball backwards to Samuel. Seriously???

Come on guys! DUI is bad, but so is driving 90+ in a 55mph zone. He is fortunate it turned out as well as it did. It’s his immaturity and, of course, the fault is all his. Glad he is remorseful, but don’t think Coach Richt should be telling us how “hurt” he is; deserves to sit out and think how “hurt” his family or the families of his passengers would have been if he had run off the road or crashed into an innocent person.

Kudos to Coach Grantham! The D has done an awesome job and plays hard. It will have to be even better if we don’t pick up the O.

Yes, but lets wait and see how and if we’ve improved by the end of the seasnon AND where we stand before we start saying we can beat the #’s 1 and 2 teams in the country. Agree with Fred that the D is real and on the right track. Feel just as strongly that the O is not because (1) a good middle school coach could probably have predicted with 80% probability what types of plays the dawgs were going to run in the 2nd half, & (2) it’s difficult for the O-line to feel really confident about their abilties when their coach won’t go for it on 4th & 5 inches deep in an opponents territory. As Andy Reed said this morning on Mike & Mike about the Eagles, ‘we were up good in the 2nd half & took our foot off the gas and ended up loosing”. That’s going to be CMR talking about the dawgs maybe 3-4 times during the reaminder of this season if we don’t start playing 60 minutes if football. Solution – make Bobo the QB coach and go find a true world-class O-coordinator. CB

We should be concerned about a good hit on Crowell or Murray. Lose one of those players and UGA will look worst than Fl. did against Ala. after Brantley went down. We have no depth(game experience) at those positions. Unlike Ala. our “drop off”, between starters and backups overall, is great.

Offensive Line remains a work-in-process after 3 years.

It is frustrating to watch game coaching and lack of offensive excecution in the second half.
