Dominating Dogs defense makes up for lackluster offense

The Dogs' John Jenkins slams Ladarius Perkins to the ground on a day when the Georgia defense dominated. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

It’s beginning to look like if you want to see the Georgia Bulldogs offense in action, you better catch the first half, because judging by the past two games they’re taking off most of the third and fourth quarters.

Fortunately, for the Dogs, their defense is playing a full four quarters and Saturday against Mississippi State the D turned in a dominating performance, holding the Maroon Bulldogs to a measly 56 yards on the ground, with an average of only 1.6 yards per carry, and letting Dan Mullen’s vaunted spread option convert only 27 percent of its third-down tries. Georgia also had five sacks on the day.

The only thing the D didn’t do was score, and they likely could have if they’d held on to several almost-interceptions that were dropped. As it was, they did manage to snag two picks.

Still, there’s one overwhelming conclusion that you have to take from a game where Georgia threw three interceptions (one a pick 6), had almost no offense in the third quarter, muffed two field goal attempts and yet still won the game by 14 points:

Mississippi State isn’t very good.

The Georgia offense actually looked pretty decent in the first half, though it only really needed to launch one long, sustained drive, getting the ball in good field positions a couple of other times through a nice Brandon Boykin punt return and another shanked MSU punt.

Isaiah Crowell had 104 yards on 22 carries, most of it in the first half and had another very impressive, weaving touchdown run canceled when it was ruled he had stepped on the sideline.

Aaron Murray completed 13 of 25 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns, again mostly in the first half. But besides having three picks on the day, Murray and the Georgia offense were largely ineffective after halftime. At least some of the blame had to go to the offensive line, which had a very lackluster day.

Crowell was spelled a good bit by Carlton Thomas (surprisingly effective) and Richard Samuel (mostly not), and the freshman back seemed more comfortable running out of the spread formation that Georgia used more extensively in the first half than the tight I-formation the Dogs hunkered down in for most of the last two quarters.

The frustration of the second half for Georgia fans was summed up by a third-and-inches play in the third quarter when the Dogs went with Samuel and somehow came up short. And then when Georgia again got the ball at the MSU 14, couldn’t get 10 yards, and rather than go for a fourth-and-short play brought in the still-troubled field goal unit, which couldn’t even get the kick off. Boos were heard coming from the Georgia stands.

Thank goodness one of Georgia’s units played up to its capabilities.

Still, it seems churlish to grumble too much after the Dogs won another conference game. Yes, the offense and special teams have a long way to go, but the Georgia defense seems to be for real.

And that’s definitely worth celebrating.

Feel free to share your own views of Georgia’s win over MSU.

The one thing that stood out to me was thuga continuing to show their lack of class. Another pre game skirmish was far from shocking as the puppies average about 3 to 4 of those a year. Keep it classy you pathetic dawgs.

And since all you morons cried your little hearts away last year for supposed dirty players even though your own center was suspended for a dirty hit I’m going to call for suspensions of the thuga player that body slammed relf.

Walsh is now a liability and Murray had better unscrew himself. Defense was awesome…thank god something is working.

This team still can’t beat Florida. And if UGA can’t beat Florida….again…..then let’s get a new coach.

Defense looked better, except Relf ran that same keeper THREE times without being stopped.

Wake up, Grantham!

Go Dawgs!

kevin- do you know how many times in the last few years the dawgs have done that? I can think of 5 right off the top of my head. And 0 of those teams tried to start a fight. The worst was Auburn last year where not only did the puppies stomp on the logo at the start of the game but they also sent 31 coaches and players onto the field to fight after the game.

I’m not sure what’s going on with field goals, but that has to be corrected. The offense seems to be really hit or miss. The defense is looking pretty damn good.
If you take away the points the special teams and offense have given up to opposing teams (or put them inside our red zone), the D has been pretty stout. Hell, the O gave up more points than the D today.

Fairly took cheap shots on murray the whole game hell even ray charles saw it I think that incident is justified but if a team who had to beat lousiana tech in OT comes into a sec stadium on the road and stomp on the logo they deserve every single bit of the ass whopping they got. Now of your so anti-UGA why are you reading bills blog? Stop trolling and grow up big guy. Go Dawgs

Yeah, Walsh is really out of it this year.

He obviously has something besides football on his mind.

A buddy of mine on St. Simons Island says Walsh is looking up when he kicks, and that’s why he’s missing.

Let’s check the tape…

go cry to your momma georgie. baby.

defense is STOUT against the run. DB’s look good too. We are weak in the flats against the five yard swing passes. but our speed makes up for it.

offense gets in a rhythm then dies. gonna need A LOT more consistency from the offense if we are gong to beat Florida Auburn and Tenn.

Ignore George… and other “visitors” looking for a life on this blog.

Pretty sloppy effort on offense and we still showed who the real Dawgs are. We need to keep improving and the D will get a pretty good test at Tennessee, even though they have played all cupcakes to date.

The defense looks amazing. One of the best in the SEC and in the country.

Special teams looked really good (coverage units)…Butler can still boom it…but Walsh looks like something’s bothering him. He’s just not the same Walsh.

I think we’ll beat Tennessee. They have no running game and even if they do we’ll shut it down, and come after Bray. Simple as that.

“Churlish” to complain after a win? Had we not been having similar issues in the last few years I’d agree with you. Unfortuantely, Richt continues to bury his stupid looking face in the sand on where the problem lies.

Spurrier hasn’t given up his playing calling and how’s his team doing? Bobo doesn’t cut it – he has as much pinache and imagination as the IRS.

Churlish, indeed.

I’m beginning to like what I’m seeing out of our defense. The only bad game that can be pinned on the defense was Boise State, and even there our defense held their own against their running game. And no one else can seem to stop their passing attack. The offense looks dysfunctional and out of sync. If we could just protect the ball better, we’d have a chance in all of the remaining games. I saw Murray throw into double coverage too many times. And Miss. St. is surprisingly bad. But a win is a win. Go Dawgs!

Get behind Richt

October 1st, 2011
6:14 pm

It’s pretty clear that this team has found it’s swag on D. I’m still a huge fan of Richt and letting him go would be a major mistake. He made a great decision hiring Grantham. Bobo does a great job in the first half, but I can’t figure out what happens after halftime. Crowell is playing like a beast, so why do we go with Samuel and Carlton Thomas so much in the 2nd half, although Carlton played well. I’m not sure whats going on with Murray. Bobo needs to realize that his freshman are the key – Malcolm Mitchell, Isaiah Crowell, Michael Bennett.

Mike Bobo is the worse OC I’ve ever seen. How many times should you run a play right up the middle before you try something else? Crowell was upset. I would have been too. We must have the smallest playbook in the league. Bobo is holding Ga. back from being a better team. Richt is an idiot if he cannot see this for himself. Good Job D. Wat to play hard boys. Murray is not what he was billed to be. He’s scared and wants to force it to number 7. He wasn’t even looking where he was throwing the ball. Why not let Mason play some when Murray is struggling? We actually sat on the lead after halftime. We shoulda let some young guys play. Get rid of Bobo>

getbehindricht, i think we relied less on Crowell in the second half because he looked downright tired at times. i remember several times him being winded with his hands on his hips. MSU made adjustments to our running attack in the second half. our offense made no adjustments and was stagnant per usual trends.

i don’t get why we don’t throw to figgins out of the back field more? Also, it appears our toss sweep from the I is a solid play not utilized enough.

Figgins flat out lays the wood on toss sweeps clearing the way for crowell/thomas.

What happens to the offense in the second half is that the other team makes adjustments. It’s the exact same problem we had with the defense under Martinez. Neither one have the intelligence to make adjustments on the fly.

Walsh must be in love or he just got dumped …………. he is totally out of it. He is walking up there thinking “I am a choke artist ………… oh no, I CHOKED AGAIN like in the Florida game and the SC game and last week vs Ole Miss”. CLOWN he has become. It is what it is folks.

Aaron Murray continues to hurt UGA with his bone headed throws and nervous feet. He looks and looks and looks for Orson Charles, then simply tries to force it to him on a rope and the PIC SIX resulted!! He is a great HS QB and that is it.

Murray is not a big time QB in this league. THREE PICS TODAY !!! Yes, he is ok with mid level to bad teams but vs top drawer teams, he simply chokes. He will not be the UGA starter next year, all year long. He has become a liability. The fans will boo him if he continues to hurt UGA with his DUMB READS and THROWS.

D looks pretty good and we will hold final judgement until Dogs play UT and Florida and KY and AU and of course, GT. It appears to be far better vs last year’s D. MSU today averaged less than 2 per carry. Decent that is.

Offense? Both Richt anbd Bobo are supposedly coaching up AM and it looks like it. He is dreadful. He actually is regressing as a third year player, in a system that he runs only half way decently. This is shocking. O line has to take about 45% of the bad rap for this too.

Heck, we cannot even get 4 inches for a first down. THAT is awful.

Three picks and Murray finishes the game answered your question about Hudsom Mason getting playing time. If he wants to play college ball he will have to transfer. Looked to me Georgia forgot to play in the second half. Even if we run the table we sill will not make it to Atlanta!
