Bulldogs at play: An Athens time capsule

Remember sitting out on the deck at T.K. Harty's Saloon in Athens?

Remember sitting out on the deck at T.K. Harty's Saloon in Athens?

I’m off today as usual, but I came across this piece I wrote for the Constitution 28 years ago in the archives and thought any Dogs fans who were in the Classic City around 1983 would get a kick out of it. It originally ran Sept. 23, 1983, with the headline, “Bulldogs at play: Where to party in funtown Athens.”

Several things strike me about it now: Much has changed, especially the prices. Also, we thought two dozen nightspots was a lot back then; now it seems like there’s that many bars and clubs in one block of downtown Athens. The Normaltown Flyers and Dirk Howell are still around, but I think the only surviving nightclub mentioned is the 40 Watt, and it’s long since moved to a different location. Man, I miss T.K.’s.

Anyway, I remember my brother Tim helped me do the legwork for this piece; I don’t think I exactly had to twist his arm. Think of it as an Athens time capsule. And for those who around UGA back then, I hope it brings back some good (if hazy) memories. …

ATHENS — This home of the University of Georgia is a partying town. Especially after football games.

Bulldog fans searching for post-game celebration can pick from well over two dozen nightspots in the Classic City. The entertainment includes balladeers, rock, country, new wave, oldies, jazz, strippers and disco. Places reserved for nothing more than serious elbow-bending are numerous, too.

On game weekends it’s best to arrive before 9 p.m., to avoid the rush. Also, bars in Athens stop serving at 1 a.m. on Friday nights and midnight on Saturdays.

Around half of Athens’ clubs are in and around the city’s charming downtown. Adequate parking is available at most if you get there early.

A good place to start a barfly’s tour of Athens is T.K. Harty’s Saloon (549-5052, 95 Hoyt St.). Located in a restored railway station a few blocks north of downtown, T.K.’s is the oldest nightclub in town now that the Last Resort, a legendary club founded as a coffee house in the mid-’60s, has closed.

The nicest thing about T.K.’s is the deck, where balladeer Bruce Chrichton accompanies himself on acoustic guitar. (He also plays before the game on football Saturdays). Beer ranges from $1.25 to $2.75 for a pitcher, mixed drinks are $1.50. A lot of students congregate here, but it’s actually one of the more sedate spots in town.

On the edge of downtown in the History Village hotel complex is another club located in a restored building. It’s called Bixby’s (546-0410, 295 E. Dougherty St.) and the stone and brick walls are remnants of the old Athens Steam Co. A small room decorated with lots of hanging plants, it features the jazz-pop of Bystander, an Augusta group. Beer is $1.25-$1.50, mixed drinks are $2.25-$3 and the crowd tends to be older.

A more raucous time can be had nearby at the Mad Hatter (549-4046, 450 E. Hancock Ave., in back of the Athens Flea Market). This place has a large disco dance floor, a small lounge equipped with large-screen TV and a 1,200-capacity ballroom in back (with one wall painted red and black and decorated with a Bulldog banner). Sidewinder will be rocking Friday and Saturday nights for a young crowd. Beer is $1.50-$1.75, mixed drinks are $1.75-$2.50 and there’s usually a cover charge.

Around the corner is the 40 Watt Club (548-9288, 382 E. Broad St.), mecca for Athens’ New Wavers but not exclusively devoted to that brand. In fact, this weekend the club features the country-pop-bluegrass harmonies of the Normaltown Flyers (one of Athens’ finest groups) and Athens rock pioneer Mad Dog Melton and his Dixie Grease (who might be familiar to UGA alumni from the late 1960s and early ’70s). Beer is $1.25-$1.75, mixed drinks are $1.75-$2.75 and there’ll be a $3 cover charge. Seating capacity is 200, but occasionally more than 500 folks have been squeezed in; don’t dawdle getting there.

The newest arrival on the Athens club scene is a familiar name to Atlantans: the Buckhead Beach (549-4921, 244 Oconee St.), located in what once was the B&L Warehouse. “After we sold the one in Atlanta,” said general manager Scott Hadly, “we were looking for a property and Athens just seemed a natural. We were drawing predominantly college age in Atlanta.”

This cavernous club, decorated with traffic signs and neon beer signs, has a raised dance floor, a long bar, a gameroom and bar in back and a very noisy college clientele. Capacity is 1,000, but it gets very crowded late in the evening. Beer is $1.50, mixed drinks are $1.75-$2.50 and there’s usually a cover charge. The Tams perform Friday at 9 p.m. and again Saturday starting at 6 p.m.

The coldest beer in town (and the nicest atmosphere) is available at O’Malley’s (549-3306, 271 Williams St.). This is yet another restored building (an old mill), located right on the edge of the Oconee River. The club’s extensive deck lets you sit outside while the water rushes beneath you. Live entertainment is booked occasionally, but mostly you’ll find students drinking and dancing. Beer is 75 cents-$1.25, mixed drinks are $1.25-$2.50.

Other attractions in the downtown area include Bourbon Street (546-6111, 247. E. Washington St.), a dimly lit club located in the basement of the Georgian Hotel and featuring all-nude dancing; the Frog Pond Lounge (546-8122, 513 W. Broad St.), a very small and extremely crowded room popular with the older crowd thanks to the vintage rock ‘n’ roll and country churned out by the two-man Dirk Howell Band; Daddy’s Dollar (543-6511, 230 N. Finley St.), a typical hotel lounge in the Family Inn featuring country-rock bands such as this weekend’s Joe & Tony; and the restaurant Friends (546-7693, 247 E. Washington St.) in the Georgian Hotel, which occasionally books acts in the old hotel ballroom. Gamble Rogers will perform next Friday night and Mike Reid the weekend after that.

Baxter Street, climbing the hill beside the high-rise dorms near Sanford Stadium, doesn’t offer much in the way of live music. There are a couple of lounges: Harry’s (546-7716, 494 Baxter St.) and Papa Joe’s (548-3481, 740 Baxter St.). Harry’s occasionally features entertainment and Papa Joe’s is beer and wine only right now.

Heading out Broad Street (which becomes the Atlanta Highway or U.S. 29-78), you’ll find Armadillo Palace (543-8847, 2194 W. Broad St.). Neal James performs Friday and Saturday at this 1,300-seat country-rock club. Beer is $1.50, mixed drinks are $2 and the crowd tends to be older than at most downtown clubs.

Students and alumni alike gather at the Fifth Quarter (353-9422, 2260 W. Broad St.), a sports-oriented bar and game room run by former Bulldog player Craig Hertwig and started by another ex-Dawg, Wayne Swinford. There’s a pre-game barbecue and two buses take customers to the stadium and back. Next weekend, the Normaltown Flyers will perform. The seats for the tables out front are old red bleachers removed from Sanford Stadium a couple of seasons ago. Beer is $1.25-$1.50 and mixed drinks are $1.75-$2.50.

The Night Owl Lounge (353-9328) at 3155 Atlanta Highway is a wild and wooly country-rock club with almost as many patrons sitting on cars in the parking lot as are inside listening to the band. Riverstreet plays this weekend. Beer is $1.50-$1.75 and mixed drinks are $2-$3. A mostly non-student crowd packs the place.

If you don’t mind driving a few minutes, you can also hit: the J&J Center (549-7009, Commerce Highway-U.S. 441), a 500-seat country music dance club featuring David Wills this weekend; Foxz (546-8209, 1294 Prince Ave, behind Allen’s), a bar-dance club located where Between the Hedges used to be; Brandy’s (353-1904, Jefferson Road in the Homewood Shopping Center), a lounge in a steak and seafood restaurant featuring guitarist Perry Mac (who does a pretty fair Willie Nelson) and pianist Jim Sherman; and the Lighthouse (353-7206, Lumpkin Street at Five Points), a restaurant-lounge featuring the Jim McKillip jazz trio.

Hit enough of these places and you’ll begin to understand why some folks in Athens think a Ph.D. stands for Party hard, Dammit.

@Gay Dawg/Otis one as if you ever turned down anyone…Seriously are you just giving up on the team after the 4th game? Hell we won the last two , why not wait until the game ends after the UT game we will know what we have by then, bad ,fair , good we know great is a real stretch for this club. But its a long season, there is a chance we have seen the worst of it already….not a great chance but a chance never the less.

I love the UGA game day traditions. The UGA band playing the “Gone With the Wind” theme song after the post game concert gives me chills. I guess the buy-a-ticket, get-a hot dog-and-a-coke-free is one of the best Tech traditions, as are the demeaning rat hats. One thing about the ferocious bees, they have class, low class!

Nice trip down memory lane, Bill. Think I hit every durn one of those places some time or other. Lordy Mercy, I remember one great night at T.K.’s helping 5 gals celebrate a coupla going aways–just one other guy along, and he was attached to a girl friend. Best end that story right there in case my kids read this… Too many 5th Q nights to count, man–remember those quaint “video games?” And good, good times with a certain sophisticated sweetie at Friend’s, then would get downstairs on other nights to “Speakeasy’s” (before it wend nude and became Bourbon Street, I saw Mike Cross and Gamble Rogers there). Did the disco bit at the Hatter–Disco wasn’t my thing, but it was a great place for a true “color blind” crowd. Always thought O’Malley’s and the B&L were a bit overrated, tell you the truth. And WHAT?! no Allen’s? You hadda see the Flyers (and Randall Bramblett and Dave Cousy) on New Year’s Eve at Allen’s, man–you wuzn’t livin’ til you heard ‘em do a tribute to “Hank Damn Williams SENIOR!.” And waaay out near Bogart was Mel’s–saw him bust some drunk “How ‘Bout Dem Damn Dawg” guy’s head open with a coffee cup for making a lewd remark to Mel’s wife. But THE best friggin’ happenings really were at the apartment complexes, and that, too is best left undetailed except to say that GDIs could flat tear it up, man!

He did not mention the Armadillo Palace (owned by David Allen Coe) on Atlanta Highway. I went there as a college freshman and saw female mud wrestling for the first time (maybe the last too!) Several members of Hill Hall ended up with mud stained shirts that served as souvineers of some heckling that was done. I wish I was there now…

I was introduced to $5 pitchers of Long Island Iced Teas at TK Harty’s or TK’s, as we called it.
I believe that may have been the last time I had that damn concoction….
What about “Odyssees” (across from GA theater)?. I did live next to O’Malleys in River Mill…great to be able to just walk next door to party. Then take the party back to River Mill.
Buckhead Beach was great in Buckhead and Athens for a while. I remember .25 cent drink nights and nickel beer nights. Small cups, but we stacked ‘em to the rafters…all tables tried to get the highest stack it seemed!
It was all about the ladies, the drinks, and the Dawgs!

The thing about O’Malleys was that it wasn’t just college kids. Also had a slightly older young adult local crowd at times. TK too. Of cource back in those days I thought everybody was “older”. Did I imagine that?

My question is: where are those places now?

Even with all the hoops that kids go through to drink these days, and binging and irresponsible drinking occurs. I feel a bit sorry for them to have to deal with the 21 drinking age. It’s never stopped anyone from underage drinking. And it has become such another money making, BS, legal issue when these young adults get caught by the cops for a freaking drink. Jeez, what crap they go through if they’re 20, for instance, and get caught with a beer in their hand at a party.
They’re in college and can even fight wars for us! Let them have a drink if their not driving or being irresponsible.
I’m glad every time they changed the age from 18 to 19 to 21 you were already grand-fathered in if previous age. And back then, you didn’t have the additional worry jail or being kicked out of school because you were drinking at a party.

I got to Athens in 1987 and I loved this article. I graduated in 1991 and my wife graduated in 1993. We were living in Columbus, GA and John Berry did a show in Columbus in about 1994 (don’t remember exactly when). Of course we went and the place looked like UGA grad central. After a couple of songs, he looked around at us and said “How many of you are here because you used to come listen to me at places like T.K’s?” Of course almost the entire room held up a hand. It was pretty funny. Anyway, thanks for the memories.

Some of you may remember my fond memories…stop at Bubba’s Bait Shop for a tall PBR to cleanse your palate, happy hour beers at Lums and the Brass Rail, cornbread and PBRs at Harry’s at five points, topped off by burgers and pitchers of beer (with your date) at Allens. Take your date back to the tri-delt or phi mu house (or Brumby, Creswell) and breakfast at the Waggon Wheel. Of course we cashed our $5 checks at the Varsity.

AltamahaDawg, Molly Hatchet played at The Other Place/Mad Hatter as well as the group Mother’s Finest. I had many great times back then, Sussex Club had some great parties at there poolhouse. Also I went to the Krystal on Baxter after getting (You Know What) at all of those places. The only thing I didn’t like about the B & L warehouse was on ZOO NIGHT there was always a fight before closing time. Also there were some clubs in the bordering counties that would open when these closed, they would stay open until 5 or 6 in the morning.

I wish all of the so called UGA fans stop whining about Coach Richt all the time, all they want is to see him leave. I know most (if not all) of these fans DO NOT KNOW ONE THING about college football or this program. They don’t go to the games or practice, thats why they are clueless. If something is going to be done, wait until the season is over. The biggest problem I see that is wrong is we are so predictable in our play calling. Maybe we need some tweaks here and there but wanting to fire Coach Richt is flat out STUPID. He has done alot of positive for our program & has alot more of that in him. So if these dipsticks want to do something good, shut up & if they go to the games make an awful lot of noise, make it the 12th man like Texas A&M. Support the coaches & players.

I love Coach Richt and think he has done wonderful things for this school and given me plenty of damn good memories, but the fact is that we are not improving. Boise meade us look like fools, we self distructed against SC, and did not perform well agains Ole Miss who is horrible. Florida once again is the class of the east with a brand new coach. If the right coach is available the AD would be a fool not to have a talk. But only if it is the right coach. I would rather deal with the problems we have now and not go through the mess Tennessee has been dealing with. The fact is Chris Rainey is Floridas best weapon. Our coach whould have kicked him off the team. There is still a lot to like about Richt. Winning isn’t everything and he seems to be doig a good job of getting rid of trouble makers.

GA Tech could have the easiest schedule in the history of football. They play Clemson and VT. VT has not played anyone so they could be weak as well. I cannot imagine how different these posts would be with that schedule. 8 automatic wins (WC, MT, Kan, NCS, Mary, Vir, Miami & Duke) By the end of the Season the best team you will face will boil down to Georgia or Clemson. You should be ashamed for even trying to brag about your record. How this could allow you to a BCS game is just sad. The ACC should be disbanded and the SEC should Get 4 BCS slots.

What was the pizza place across from Russell Hall that looked like a beach house (1984-85)? A taxi driver took me to this place that had awesome food one night. I could never find it again. It was a guy’s name. All it had was a Coca Cola sign. And, it was next to a laundry mat. They served up an omelet bigger than your head.
