Dawgs need to get student body back on board

Backup Hutson Mason got some valuable playing time against Coastal Carolina. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Backup Hutson Mason got some valuable playing time against Coastal Carolina. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

A few more thoughts after the third game of the season. …

Well, we finally got the answer to the question, what does it take for UGA not to sell out a game at Sanford Stadium? The answer: An 0-2 start and an FCS opponent with a name most folks can’t pronounce.

The 10,000 or so empty seats at Saturday’s meeting with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers were sort of to be expected at a game like this, but Georgia’s 64-game streak of home sell-outs also ended, with about 800 tickets going unsold. That’s a first for the Mark Richt era.

“I don’t think it’s that big a deal,” said the head coach, who apparently was under the impression the unsold tickets were returned by Coastal Carolina too late for Georgia to sell them. But actually late in the week UGA announced that the tickets it was putting on sale at the last minute were “unclaimed UGA student tickets.”

That’s bothersome. In the past, the students showed up early, stood throughout the game and supported the team no matter what. Saturday was a first step toward getting the Dogs back on track, but I’m afraid it probably will take a victory over a quality SEC opponent to get the student body fired up again.

Other quick hits from Saturday: After two games of the new Redcoat Band pregame routine, I’ve concluded two things: The “spell Georgia” cheer needs to be returned to its traditional spot at the end of the halftime show, and the Redcoats should dump that convoluted version of the “Georgia/Bulldogs” cheer that requires the crowd to wait for the musicians to switch positions on the field. … Mike Bobo’s “hurry up” offense seems to work better when it’s scripted and the team doesn’t have to stand there looking toward the sideline. But they still look most comfortable in the I-formation. … Michael Bennett looks like he’s quickly taking Kris Durham’s spot as Georgia’s possession receiver. … It’s worrisome that the Dogs’ defensive front couldn’t even get sacks against Coastal Carolina. … From the loose way he was carrying the ball on that interception that he ended up fumbling back to the Chanticleers, it’s a good thing Bacarri Rambo isn’t one of the defensive players getting a shot at carrying the ball for the offense. … I hope we see more of Georgia throwing out of the backfield to Isaiah Crowell and Bruce Figgins. That’s a really potent weapon for Bobo. … Aaron Murray looked OK Saturday but doesn’t appear to have completely shaken off his sophomore slump. On the other hand, once Hutson Mason got warmed up, he was delivering some really nice-looking throws. After this season, the Georgia coaching staff is going to face a decision over whether to redshirt Mason and go with Christian LeMay as the backup next year in order to get some more class separation in its quarterbacking corps. … I wonder when the last time was that the Dogs’ “long snappah” and placekicker both recovered fumbles in a game. Kudos to Ty Frix and Blair Walsh for heads-up play Saturday. … I know it was “only” Coastal Carolina, but it was great to see the Dogs stuff a fake punt. Ditto watching Carlton Thomas taking down a pass-rusher who looked to be twice his size. … Oh goody. Now we get to worry about Vandy, too.

Fred

To speculate on who a possible coach replacement at this juncture is pure BS.

1- The is no coaching vacancy

2- Candidates do not come out of the woodwork for vacancies that don’t exist

3- who may be a “hot property” now, may not be so hot, if and when such a vacancy does come available.

4- To assume that there are no excellent coaches out there would only be fooling yourself. Of course there are some not so good ones too.

I think that there a lot of good candidates for the soon-to-be-open head coaching job at UGA.

The separation of the Band from the main student seating and the cheerleaders is just plain stupid. This idea came from the main man………Adams. It was done to reduce alcohol consumption. The guy is a total jerk, meet him and you will see.
The tickets should be paper tickets, no ID required. If a student wants to sell his ticket,
sell it.
And why would you not open the gates two hours prior to kickoff.

Maybe if the football team actually consisted of STUDENT-athletes, the student body would be more interested in supporting the team. Instead, we have a bunch of kids who are more interested in dancing before the game than getting ready to actually play the game itself.

Bottom line: it is difficult to get excited about going out to watch a bunch of prima donnas who are more concerned with individual accomplishments than team success.

Wasn’t really talking about that one game Realdawg,(and should have made that more clear). I was more refering to the big picture. Season tickets VS student allotment.

You write a great blog and I enjoy reading everything you write.

Sure, there are times when I disagree with you, but dissent is healthy and spurs reaction.

Keep up the good work and thanks for all you do. And thanks for the kind words about the Redcoat Band.

Ummm, I don’t understand the cupcake argument. Georgie has played two decent teams, lost to both, then beat a cupcake. Georgia Tech is 3-0, which Georgie can’t be due to scheduling and apparent team mediocrity. If it weren’t for a cupcake, wouldn’t Georgie be winless?

As a senior at UGA, I started my college career with high expectations. After starting out as preseason #1 my freshman year, we have sunk to an “average” SEC team. With exception to the Tech game in 2009, we have failed to win a single game we were not supposed to win while I have been in school. To turn it around we HAVE to beat Florida this year. Until Jacksonville, I will just have to pound a few more drinks than usual to keep myself entertained in Sanford.

“What if our players were as wishy washy and heartless as most of you negative nellies on this blog. If you’re a true dawg fan then shut up, hunker down, and lets get behind our coach and our team. If you’re not just shut up!!”

By all means, let’s all just shut up and agree with Mark Richt 13-13 vs SEC East teams after 2005, is a team on the rise. You are the problem with UGA nowadays, settling for mediocrity when he has not beat a team who finished in the AP Poll Top 10 for 6 seasons when he then beat Auburn # 9 but lost 4 games that same year so long ago including to 4-8 Vandie. No wonder you want only your voice to be heard. Go to some CENSORED BLOG.

“bob, There was no need for a blitzing defense on Sat. Although it would have been nice for the front 3 to have bagged a sack or two. It didn’t happen.”

ARdawg, We were told when Mark Richt settled on his pick # 5 as DC that this 3-4 would bring us SACKS. Sacks are not a result of blitzing, they said we would accumulate them from the design of the Defense alone, ARdawg. What we have witnessed – while you sit there trying to make EXCUSES for our abject lack of SACKS since he signed his 1st check for 3 quarters of a million dollars a year.

We played a soft easy schedule last season and out of 13 games, only 5 ended up ranked teams. We beat NONE of them. So far this season, we have played 2 ranked teams and Florida is the only other at # 16 (since Georgia tek at # 25 obviously will NOT be ranked when the season is over, having beat NO ONE either.) that we play this entire season. We have a SOFTER easier schedule 2011 than we had in 2010. Directly, you can attribute both the loss to Boise State and to South Carolina, on never sacking either Quarterback – while they both SACKED our QB until the cows came home. It LOST both games. So, Saturday vs a 1-AA FCS team, and not a good one at that, we cannot sack their QB even 1 time. And, you can’t run in here FAST ENOUGH to make up your EXCUSES for -0- sacks YET AGAIN Saturday. This is NOT a team on the rise, but a team with fans who are EASY. Great job here. Never get put on the spot by the fans. Fail. Promise one thing deliver the opposite and they will HAVE YOUR BACK, not support the program to do better than we have after 1983. You are the problem we have around here

bad news for Richt…. two of the teams he HAS TO BEAT to go 10-2 are ranked in the top 25….(fla, gt)….. His past recent record doesnt play in his favor…..

1-GEORGIA is a combined 0-5 against Top 25 teams in 2010 and 2011
2- GEORGIA has lost 10 of its last 12 against ranked teams. (2-10 record)
3- GEORGIA is now 15-14 in his last 29 games
4-GEORGIA is 6-10 in the past 16 SEC games.
5- GEORGIA is 3-5 in their last 8 games going back to last season
6- GEORGIA has won 1 of it last 4. (and it wasnt a powerhouse we beat today)

Speaking of the Redcoats, i believe this is Karissa Wimberley’s (sp) last year as feature twirler… She is worth the price of admission alone no matter which opponent.. Finalist for the Sullivan Award and a World Champion in her sport…. Amazing young lady also…..

I am not settling… I am a Bulldog. I was here before and during this coaching staff and will be here when they’re gone. I an alum and a 31 year season ticket holder. And I don’t leave games early, because I am a Bulldog. All of you whiners can… just go. If you knew as much about football as you think you do, I suspect somebody would be paying you for that knowledge.
Also, the timing of the GEORGIA cheer IS a problem, but so is the positioning… it’s backwards. The student body side has always been the ones to start, not the press box side.

We should beat Ole Miss, New Mexico State, and Kentucky. The rest are toss-ups. FLA will likely be a loss. We could be 9-3 if we play up to our ability and we don’t get outcoached…2 big “ifs.

Maybe the student body is getting tired of the football program being a laughing stock and irrelevant. Maybe they’re tired of an overpaid coach. Maybe they think it’s not worth their time to go.

I agree with “Seriously” about the Georgia/Bulldogs cheer. Can’t whoever put it together recognize that it is not working because of the way it it being done? Backwards and slow do NOT encourage enthusiastic responses. It has now “failed” twice. Fix the thing or shut it down; it is embarrassing.
