UGA fans can show support for the team by showing up Saturday

dog LOGONothing is a sure thing in college football, but Georgia shouldn’t have too much trouble picking up its first win of the season against Coastal Carolina. So the biggest uncertainty about Saturday’s game is whether the game will continue UGA’s string of home sell-outs, and even if it does, how many Dogs fans actually will show up to cheer the team on in a one-sided nonconference match-up.

Unsold tickets to this game keep popping up, first when the opponents returned some and now with unclaimed UGA student tickets going on sale to the general public today. The athletic association says tickets can be purchased prior to 3 p.m. Friday online or by calling the ticket office at 1-877-542-1231.

And tickets will also be sold Saturday at the east end will-call windows beginning at 10 am., which reminds me of those Saturdays of my youth when kids could line up on the morning of a game for cheap “high school” tickets. Unfortunately, there won’t be any discount this time; they’ll still be the full $45.

As for those of us who already have tickets to the game, the decision remains on whether we’ll show up. My wife and I will be there, but several other fans I’ve talked to this week have been undecided about going. After all, it’s only Coastal Carolina.

Yes, but it’s also one of only a half-dozen opportunities this season to see the Dogs play Between the Hedges, and I can’t see passing that up, no matter who the opponent is.

I’m not a big fan of UGA President Michael Adams, but I like how he put it Thursday: “I’d love to see the stadium full Saturday for probably what will not be the most high-profile opponent we’ll play this year. I go to the locker room. I know these young men. I know a number of our student-athletes. We had a heck of an effort last Saturday. There’s nobody here who likes to win more than I do. But it’s time for us as a community to get behind this team, support them from now ’til the end of the season.”

Some fans already have thrown in the towel on this season after only two games, but others are like Eric Zeier and think Georgia can run the table, as Adams urged the players after the South Carolina loss. Whether you’re that optimistic or not, if you call yourself a Georgia Bulldogs fan and you are able to go to Saturday’s game, I hope you’ll do so.

For those who can’t, the game will be televised on a pay-per-view basis. Cable and satellite systems in both Georgia and South Carolina will offer the telecast for $34.95 and commercial establishments may purchase the game for $400, so I imagine most area sports bars will have it on. For viewers in other states, the game will be available on ESPN Gameplan and ESPN3 online; the ESPN feed will be blacked out in Georgia and South Carolina, though fans in those two states will be able to access the broadcast online at georgiadogs.com for the same price as the pay-per-view.

Production of the game will be handled by CSS with Bob Neal doing play by play and Buck Belue as color analyst.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and it should be a fairly glorious fall day with the high expected to be in the mid-70s. The 1971 Bulldogs, led by my old classmate Andy Johnson, will be honored at halftime.

Even at 0-2, it doesn’t get any better than Saturday in Athens. So let’s fill those seats!

Go Dogs!

DC, I don’t know how bad it will have to get before we TALK ABOUT A CHANGE………I’VE HEARD THIS :”GOOD MAN” TALK TILL I’m tired of it. WE KNOW HE IS. What he isn’t is a coach winning SEC games with the second best talent( Georgia) available to him on the East coast. MSU looked pretty tough last night. As does Tenn, as does Auburn. Tech ain’t looking bad either. We’ll see.

half century dawg:

His overall win percentage is impressive, but is only part of the equation. Consider also, that he won only half the SEC games over three yars with AJ Greene (including Stafford and Moreno on the same team one year) and that includes 6 games played against Vandy and KY. That doesn’t look good on the resume.

Goff and Donnan were both fired. They won a combined 2 games against FL during their tenures which spanned 10 years. Richt has won 2 games also in 11 years against the Gators.

These aren’t just random stats that I am spewing in a small sample. The first is a 3 year span (the most current completed 3 year span) and the other is over his entire head coaching career.

02-06 were terrific years. Cracks started forming in 07, INCREDIBLE team of 08 couldn’t win the Eastern conference. Mediocre 09 followed. One of the worst teams of modern UGA football followed in 10 (losses to Central Florida and Colorado and 0 quality wins) and now losers of our 4 of our last 5 games).

There are two sides to the argument.

Mark my words. UGA’s coaching staff will consist of Bill Belichik, Mike Ditka, Tony Dungy, Bill Parcels, Vince Lombardi’s grand son, and Rodney Garner (for recruiting).

But I thought Mutt fans were the greatest in all of sports! Do you mean to tell me when the going gets tough, the Mutt fans desert their team?? Surely, you jest! Oh…and I was shocked to see something on TV last night with the Real Dawgs over in Mississippi…they have HEDGES!! From what I have heard from Mutt fans, I thought the only sporting facility in the nation to have shrubs was UGAg! Imagine how stunned I was. Surely, the Mutt Nation has not been engaging in hyperbole and hype of their “storied” program! *GASP* (And if any of your bandwagon folks are wavering…come on down to Bobby Dodd for some exciting football and a nice bunch of folks that will make you feel far more welcome than many of the fans…at least the one that show up…will make you feel in Athens.)

murfdawg, that GT game was on Thanksgiving Eve in 1971 and was at Grant Field in Atlanta. I will never forget that drive either, yes Jimmy Poulos- The Greek scored that TD. That 71 team showed real determination and character. That Auburn game was a heart breaker, we looked flat against them for a good portion of the game. But Auburn got it handed to them by Bama and then by Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl as well. Alabama got blasted in the Orange Bowl by Nebraska and we won our bowl against North Carolina. Anyway some fond memories.

Quoth Mr. Munson:

“We hand it off to Herschel, there’s a hole….5….10…12, he’s running over people! Oh, you Herschel Walker!…My God Almighty, he ran right through two men! Herschel ran right over two men! They had him dead away inside the 9. Herschel Walker went 16 yards. He drove right over those orange shirts and is just driving and running with those big thighs. My God, a freshman!” – calling Herschel Walker’s first touchdown run against the Tennessee Volunteers in 1980.

“So we’ll try to kick one a hundred thousand miles. We’re holding it on our own 49-and-a-half … gonna try to kick it sixty yards plus a foot-and-a-half … and Butler kicked a long one … a long one … Oh my God! Oh my God! … The stadium is worse than bonkers! I can’t believe what he did! This is ungodly!” – calling Kevin Butler’s field goal in the final seconds to win over Clemson in 1984.

“Touchdown! Touchdown! Touchdown, my God, a touchdown! Touchdown! Touchdown! Massaqoui!” – Matthew Stafford’s game-winning touchdown pass to Mohamed Massaquoi against Georgia Tech in 2006.

“Man, we’ve had some shots, haven’t we? Snap to David Greene, there he goes again in the corner and we jump up….Touchdown! Oh, God, a touchdown! With 85 seconds…” – calling David Greene’s touchdown pass to Michael Johnson as Georgia defeated Auburn in 2002, clinching the Bulldogs’ first-ever SEC Eastern Division championship.

“Buck back. Third down on the 8. In trouble. Got a block behind him. Going to throw on the run. Complete to the 25, to the 30. Lindsay Scott 35, 40. Lindsay Scott 45, 50, 45, 40. Run Lindsay! Twenty-five, 20, 15, 10, 5. Lindsay Scott! Lindsay Scott! Lindsay Scott! Well, I don’t believe it. 92 yards and Lindsay really got in a footrace, I broke my chair, I came right through a chair, a metal STEEL chair…Do you know what is gonna happen here tonight? And up at St. Simons,Jekyll Island and all those places, where all those Dawg people have got those condominiums for four days…MAN, is there gonna be some property destroyed tonight!” – calling wide receiver Lindsay Scott’s 92-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Buck Belue against Florida in 1980.

“We just stepped on their face with a hob-nailed boot and broke their nose! We just crushed their face!” – calling Georgia’s last-second win over Tennessee in 2001.

I’ve never been a fair-weather fan, so I don’t understand folks who don’t show up after a few losses.

There’s something terribly wrong the “must win big all the time” attitude in our country: it’s just not possible. Games are part of life, which has its own ups and downs. The great aspect of the game should be enjoying the time spent with friends, family and just being at the games, especially during these difficult financial times.

As we all know, there are many people who can’t afford to go to the games and many who no longer have TVs or computers to watch them on.

Life is short, enjoy the best of it with no complaints!

SEVEN REASONS WHY GEORGIA SHOULD BE CONSIDERING A COACHING CHANGE.
1-GEORGIA is a combined 0-5 against Top 25 teams in 2010 and 2011
2- GEORGIA has lost 10 of its last 12 against ranked teams. (2-10 record)
3- GEORGIA is now 14-14 in his last 28 games
4-GEORGIA is 6-10 in the past 16 SEC games.
5- GEORGIA is 2-5 in their last 7 games going back to last season
6- REMAINING SCHEDULE. Games they will probably lose: 1- Miss St. 2- Tenn 3-Florida 4-Auburn. Games we should win (if we don’t have an off week): 1- Costal Carolina, 2-Miss, 3- Kentucky, 4- New Mexico, 5-Tech, 6-Vandy.
LOOKS LIKE A 50/50 CHANCE OF ANOTHER LOSING SEASON.
7- It’s been 30 yrs since our last national championship…. Can Richt get us there? Are we trending in the right direction?
THE ABOVE SAYS……. NO!

A meaningless game but a tune up for an important one with Ole Miss the next week. It seems like a lot of UGA fans have already chalked up O.M. as a win and the team hasn’t even got on the plane yet. Strange things can happen in Oxford and Nutt and Richt are a matched set so far as coaching ability goes, although GA has had much greater talent over the years. At any rate, this could be an upset, at least to Uga fans, in the making. It wouldn’t be a schocker if it were.

I don’t live in Athens and am not driving up on a hope and a prayer. I have a pretty good scalper, and the prices he wanted for Dawg tickets was extremely high. Can’t justify spending that kind of cash bro. I actually thought I would be able to get Boise Sate tickets, but no go.
