Bulldogs generous to a fault

Isaiah Crowell showed he's the real deal. Now if he can just stay in the game! (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

The bad news is that Georgia lost another “big” game Saturday, and in fact has only won one really big game in the past three seasons.

The good news: There are no more really “big” games left on their 2011 schedule.

A Bulldogs team that managed to hang 42 points on a South Carolina defense that’s considered the class of the SEC East ought to be favored in the remainder of that schedule.

Of course, a team as generous as Mark Richt’s Dogs were Saturday, giving away 21 points thanks to turnovers plus another 7 resulting from falling asleep on a fake punt, can always find a way to lose, so the 10-2 record that would salvage the season and save Richt’s job is far from certain.

Walking out of Sanford Stadium tonight, the initial impressions I took with me were a mixed bag: Georgia’s defense improved considerably from a week ago and essentially played well enough to win. … Let’s hope the turnover problems that plagued the Dogs a couple of seasons ago aren’t back, because as we saw against the Gamecocks, there’s no surer way to negate a good defensive performance. … Mike Bobo might be a slow learner, but he did apparently finally conclude that a short passing game is a better bet when your offensive line is inconsistent in protecting your quarterback. At times in the second half Saturday, it looked like Georgia had lifted a copy of Kellen Moore’s playbook. And it worked. … Isaiah Crowell is the real deal. And Bobo finally figured out that he needs to get the kid the ball with space to run. Sure, Crowell gave up a hurtful fumble, but he at least has the excuse of being a true freshman. What do we make of Aaron Murray still refusing to tuck the ball and safely take a sack? … In the first half, it seemed every time Crowell had two successive runs, he was replaced by Richard Samuel. Here’s hoping that wasn’t a conditioning thing. Finally, in the second half, Crowell got more of the reps he so badly needs to develop into the first-rate back he seems destined to become. … Two missed field goals in two games for Blair Walsh, and this week it wasn’t a long one like against Boise. Let’s hope this isn’t a trend. … If Richt really went for that onside kick late in the game rather than give his defense a chance for a stop with 2:15 left and three time outs still in his pocket because, as he said after the game, Christian Robinson was hurt and he didn’t think anyone else could get the D lined up right, the state of affairs at linebacker officially has reached red alert status.

So, yes, Georgia outplayed South Carolina, as Steve Spurrier said after the game. But at 0-2 that’s really sort of a tin-plated substitute for a silver lining.

Wayne@6;45, Why would Georgia want Kirby Smart? Do you really think he is responsible for Alabama’s Defense? It’s my impression that Smart is following Saben’s directions. Doubt we have know what he is capable of. If the pattern that started 3-4 years ago continues in 2011, then I would agree that someone else should have a chance to run the team. I’m sure the prospects of earning 3+ million dollars a year would produce a long list of candidates, but would they be any good. Remember the trouble UGA had getting a Defensive Coordinator? At this point he is no Erk Russell.

Richt and the dawgs could win 10 straight and be in the DOME for the SECCG. Richt is the 10 game winner ain’t he?
UGA will get to .500. Should beat Coastal & Ole Miss
After that it looks like a win one lose one fight to the end of the season.

For what Georgia pays Richt and the staff, winning, and winning consistently is mandatory! They haven’t, and have been passed by several programs with less resources. Time for a change, although I do not believe it should be the obvious like are always bantered about. Kirby Smart…nope….Dan Mullen….nope….Chris Peterson…untouchable…who odes it leave amoung the “popular” choices???Maybe Oregon’s Kelly or Skip Holtz????

Bookies all pick UGA to lose, and they did. You can talk about why UGA lost, but USC is talking about how they won. Nothing new this week.

At the end of the game with 3 minutes left and 3 time outs…..we should have been running the ball to run the time down. If we got in a pinch then we had 3 time outs to play with. But, for some reason Mike Bobo decided we should throw the ball on first down instead of running it. What an idiot! There is no reason to pass the ball because we needed to eat up the clock on a slow drive. Passing the ball doesn’t eat up the clock because it can be incomplete and end up stopping the clock……which we don’t want. Bobo should be learning how to coach and not actually coaching. Coach Mark Richt is letting his personal relationships cloud his judgment and ruin his career at UGA. I thought the defense played awesome! Kudos to Todd Grantham and the defensive team. They played wonderfully! And, I saw Grantham getting fired up on the sidelines with the players. He was screaming his head off at them and laying down the law. I loved it! We need someone with some fire in their belly to inspire these youngsters….not someone who looks like their shoping the aisles at Wal-Mart wondering what to buy with their finger on their lips. Football is an emotional game and it is ok to show some emotion from time to time…Coach Richt.

Is anyone else tired of Chuck Dowdles weak, softball questions he asks to Coach Richt?
I like Chuck a lot and I think he’s a good guy but his questions are weak and indirect. I know you’ve got to be that way to some degree but come on….ask a serious straightforward question from time to time that makes CMR actually have to answer a real question.

Chip Kelly can stay at Oregon. Kirby Smart will be coming to Athens. Remember when he turned down the D-Coord. job? He was waiting on the head coach job. He’s going to get it. Just wait and see. It’s a no-brainer.

I was listening to the postgame show on the radio while driving home and heard how Eric Zeier was praising how this team was heading in the right direction. Well, I’d like to remind Eric this….WE LOST THE GAME. We lost and any time we lose….it is NOT acceptable. Losing is not acceptable. It sounds like you’re accepting mediocrity when you say we lost but we’re headed in the right direction. You lose credibility when you make comments like that. It is about time the Bulldog Nation had a little dose of truth and honesty. We are losing games that we should be winning.

From the start of the game it was UGA s to loose….. Way to many missed opportunities, the boys fought hard yesterday, but in the end, they just made to many mistakes…. The O line is horrible, if Murry makes it through the season, I will have to say he will be the toughest guy on the team, he is getting hit way to much…. They are going to make him gun-shy if this keeps up…. I hope they get better, because it looks as though Tenn, Auburn, Fla are all better than what preseason ” exsperts” had predicted……

To all you folks who have forecast how the entire rest of the season is going to go (in some cases down to the last game),

It’s way too early to know how this thing is going to play out. We don’t really know which of the Eastern division teams are going to be good and which have had good breaks (Auburn?) or bad breaks (the Dawgs yesterday?). Rest assured, it will all get settled on the field and then we can decide whether we want “to praise Coach Richt or to bury him” (paraphrasing Shakespeare).

I agree with you on the Dowdle comments. He definitely is trying to play nice with the questions he asks. On the other hand, I’m not sure I agree with you on the performance of Grantham’s defense. Yes, they were only directly responsible for 17 points but they couldn’t stop USC when we had to stop them. They never contained Lattimore. Look at his stats; he ran all over us. We also got a lot of help from Garcia; his passes were terrible and he missed receiver after open receiver (at least in the first part of the game). They were more successful in blitzing but I’m not sure I’m ready to heap praise on them for that game.

Just today I told my wife the exact same thing. “Chuck Dowdle gives Richt nothing but softballs.” Since Chuck’s started with the game broadcasts I’ve lost all respect for him. A great question for Richt would have been “Can you break down the fake punt play for us?” I for one would like an honest answer to this completely legimiate question. Had they been warned? Who is suppose to make sure they actually punt, etc.? I think this could have been asked to help understand the play instead of laying blame. Like everyone else associated with UGA, he only spouts the party line about looking for positives.

Quite your complaining! A fan is supposed to be supportive. And give me a break, how many of the complainers here have ever coached anything any more competative that little girls soccer. The coaching staff is efficient, the players have to perform and execute. We have younguns playing. Our seasons have been less thab desireable because we keep losing our big play guys to the draft or graduation so we never have them for their senior years. So you folks that aren’t eligible to be in the UGA alumni association, if things aren’t going to suit you then take your “support” to Florida or Auburn because with your type of brow-beating support I’m sure it won’t take long to degrade and demoralize them as well. DawginLex, I agree with all of what you posted. But sitting in the 2nd deck in the endzone you could see clearly that Murray CANNOT see over his O line and that is what is causing critical INT’s (see Jax in 2010). He can have all the 250+ games passing that you want but until he can beat a team with a winning record nothing else matters. What I fear as a Gator is that Richt will go to LeMay next year along with Crowell (who is the real deal). That combination should bring up bad memories for Gators of Charlie Ward and Warrick Dunn.

Why Georgia should be thinking about a coaching change…..
1-Georgia is a combined 0-5 against Top 25 teams in 2010 and 2011 and has lost 10 of its last 12 against ranked teams.

2- richt is now 14-14 in his last 28 games

3- Lets look at the remaining schedule. Games they will probably lose: 1- Miss St. 2- Tenn 3-Florida 4-Auburn. Games we should win (if we don’t have an off week): 1- Costal Carolina, 2-Miss, 3- Kentucky, 4- New Mexico, 5-Tech, 6-Vandy. LOOKS LIKE A 50/50 CHANCE OF ANOTHER LOSING SEASON.

The D didn’t lose this game. The turnovers and missed FG were the difference.

The kids played their guts out. The kids made mistakes. I think it was Bobo’s best called game since LSU in 2008 when we hung 50 on them.

Crowell
Mitchell

Those 2 kids are going to be stars for whoever our coach is next year and the year after that.

Let’s judge Richt on the entire body of work for the season.

6-6 I say fire him
7-5 I say fire him
8-4 I say fire him
9-3 I say keep him
10-2 I say keep him

If he loses to MSU and UT, he will be 3-4 headed to Jacksonville.

It will be over if that happens but he will most likely get to finish the year.

Just do not foresee a lot of wins after that. Weak schedule being wasted by undercoached team with no fire in its belly. My sympathy to Russ. No mascot deserves this type of abuse. I can only hope the Dawg offense can offset all the points it is sure to provide foes with pick sixes and fumble returns for TD. I guess Aaron Cox is doing his best. Will never be good enough! Sigh.
