Bulldogs generous to a fault

Isaiah Crowell showed he's the real deal. Now if he can just stay in the game! (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

The bad news is that Georgia lost another “big” game Saturday, and in fact has only won one really big game in the past three seasons.

The good news: There are no more really “big” games left on their 2011 schedule.

A Bulldogs team that managed to hang 42 points on a South Carolina defense that’s considered the class of the SEC East ought to be favored in the remainder of that schedule.

Of course, a team as generous as Mark Richt’s Dogs were Saturday, giving away 21 points thanks to turnovers plus another 7 resulting from falling asleep on a fake punt, can always find a way to lose, so the 10-2 record that would salvage the season and save Richt’s job is far from certain.

Walking out of Sanford Stadium tonight, the initial impressions I took with me were a mixed bag: Georgia’s defense improved considerably from a week ago and essentially played well enough to win. … Let’s hope the turnover problems that plagued the Dogs a couple of seasons ago aren’t back, because as we saw against the Gamecocks, there’s no surer way to negate a good defensive performance. … Mike Bobo might be a slow learner, but he did apparently finally conclude that a short passing game is a better bet when your offensive line is inconsistent in protecting your quarterback. At times in the second half Saturday, it looked like Georgia had lifted a copy of Kellen Moore’s playbook. And it worked. … Isaiah Crowell is the real deal. And Bobo finally figured out that he needs to get the kid the ball with space to run. Sure, Crowell gave up a hurtful fumble, but he at least has the excuse of being a true freshman. What do we make of Aaron Murray still refusing to tuck the ball and safely take a sack? … In the first half, it seemed every time Crowell had two successive runs, he was replaced by Richard Samuel. Here’s hoping that wasn’t a conditioning thing. Finally, in the second half, Crowell got more of the reps he so badly needs to develop into the first-rate back he seems destined to become. … Two missed field goals in two games for Blair Walsh, and this week it wasn’t a long one like against Boise. Let’s hope this isn’t a trend. … If Richt really went for that onside kick late in the game rather than give his defense a chance for a stop with 2:15 left and three time outs still in his pocket because, as he said after the game, Christian Robinson was hurt and he didn’t think anyone else could get the D lined up right, the state of affairs at linebacker officially has reached red alert status.

So, yes, Georgia outplayed South Carolina, as Steve Spurrier said after the game. But at 0-2 that’s really sort of a tin-plated substitute for a silver lining.

Bill-
Based on what absurd logic do you think UGA will be favored against UT, UF, MS ST and AU? Toss ups at best. Ms St is better than USCe. AU will be better in Nov. Prob could beat UGA today. UF will win if nothing else out of habit. UT, true toss up. Yes, it is possible UGA could be all these teams. But no way you can bank on it. At least based on whats happened the past 2 weeks.

Yes UGA will get better as the season progresses. So will everyone else.
WDE 17-0.

First quarter, 3rd and short, Bobo calls a pass play. First quarter, 3rd and 9, Bobo calls a run. How long, OH LORD, how long???

Jeez, FLA DAWG, did you even watch the game. The D allowed 17 points. The rest of SC points came from turnover runback TDs and fake punt. Our D also held SC to 4 of 14 on third down conversions.

True. For most of the game I was impressed by the D. However, with the game on the line in the 4th quarter the D couldn’t stop the run all of a sudden. Lattimore got 97 yds in the 4th quarter and SC wasn’t making a pretense of doing anything but give it to Lattimore.

Isaiah was taking handoffs with bruised ribs, and you gave up on your team with four minutes left because you didn’t want to sit in traffic. UGA fans are an absolute embarrassment to UGA and the state of Georgia. GEt your butts in your seat and make some noise!!!!! These kids are playing their hearts out.

Ga. has a good coach and team, not in the air of lsu or alabama or arkansas or fla (or tenn.in a coupla years), or sc, a bit better than miss and kent. …..Richt doesn’t have it, can’ put the entire team together at one time:offense, defense and kicking.Finds a way to loose against good team, or more accurately can’t get it all together, for 3.5 million……..

Generous ie right. Richt/Bobo give Carolina two Offensive line studs, both from Georgia! Rokevious Watkins and Marcus Campbell. Watkins was dominant for the SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR, and Richt needs to acknowledge it. Creekside High, from right here in Atlanta. Campbell and Watkins are side by side beasts, just like the two Georgia OL(s) Richt/Bobo generously provided ALABAMA. James Carpenter ( who like Watkins, is an NFL 1st round pick) and Atlanta Westlake’s Chance Warmack. Thanks for your generosity Richt. Thanks Bobo. On behalf of Alabama and especially yesterday, South Carolina. Keep ‘em coming.

I loved it when Georgia was up 6-0 and driving, then the announcer says “Georgia is in field goal range again”. Sort of like that’s the best they’ll get. Then the kick is shanked. Crowell is the real deal though. Could not understand why Georgia did not just keep giving the ball to him and force SC to stop him. Samuels needs to go back to LB.

I saw way to many Ga players acting like smack talking, undisciplined idiots. I did not see much of that on USCs side. Nothing worse than seeing a bunch of losers talk smack like world beaters. And yes King you still are drinking the Kool-aid. How is that SEC east championship looking now?

Lots of critics out here … guessing most of them are not GA fans. I’m a fan/graduate and I want them to win as much as anyone. Am I happy that we’re 14 and 14 over our last 28 games? No. But, did I see tremendous improvement from week #1 against Boisie? A HUGE yes.

Defense – played better than I thought they could after watching week #1. They held Garcia in check and they were great on 3rd down. Lattimore gained his yards, but he will do that against most teams. 21 of the points were not their fault.

Murray – Made some key mistakes, but he did throw for four touchdowns and 250 yards. over 60% completion rate.

Boykin – put us in good field position with some really great run backs.

Crowell – going to be special. How can you not be excited about watching him the next three years.

I’m bummed that we lost, but its not like I’m not going to cheer for a different team. I’ll cheer for them regardless of what happens. I’m taking my 5-year old son to the Coastal Carolina game next week and I’m going to watch us get our first win of the year. I’m then going to watch Georgia every week because that’s what I do. I’m going to keep supporting Richt until he’s not the coach. Period. I believe that’s what most of true GA fans are going to do … not the small group of idiots that are the frequent posters on this blog.

It’s almost as though the belief is there that all you need to do is make a change and that means you’re going to go 11 and 1. That’s not the case. How’s Brian Kelly doing at Notre Dame?

Get rid of Richt and there’s a better than 75% chance the NEXT hire is not the right guy. Not that easy to find elite coaches.

So what … the answer is to blow up the program because we lost to the #5 and #12 teams in the country? I’m not saying that losing is acceptable. I just want to reserve judgement and see how we improve over the course of the year.

Again, won’t be that easy to find an elite coach. We’re more likely to whiff. It happens. Ask Notre Dame about Ty Willingham, Charlie Weiss, etc.

Crowell showed he could move the ball. With just over 3 minutes left and BOOBOO wants to go shotgun and pass !? Why not line up, run the ball and work the clock ? Instead Murray gets slug around like a rag doll not knowing how to tuck the ball and take the sack. We have a lot of talent but no talent at calling plays !

This “young team” excuse doesn’t hold water. Every college team is comprised of kids who have 5 years to play 4. If your team has a preponderance (it’s a big word that means a lot…) of it’s key players that are freshmen or sophomores, it means one of two things. Either, your upperclassmen are no longer on your team (draft, injuries, failed out of school, kicked off team, etc.) or they aren’t good enough to compete with the underclassmen. If they aren’t good enough to compete, maybe your recruiting classes weren’t that good. Either way, the coaching staff is responsible.

Pessimistic dawg (fans) really need to shut up. There are so many moronic posts this morning. Newsflash: Isaiah Crowell CANNOT carry the ball EVERY DOWN you IDIOTS!!! When you sprint for 14 yds, then 28, guess what happens….you get winded!! I don’t care how well conditioned you are. This was the kid’s 1st big time SEC game. He played great. The coaching staff did much better calling plays. There is no room to talk smack about any of the playcalling. I am proud of the way the team played. It was clear who the better team was but unfortunately we gave them too many points.

I am excited for the rest of the season. USC has to play at UT, at Miss ST, at ARK, and they have Auburn this year and UF at home. They will not win all 5 of those contests. They lose two, and the door is opened for the Dawgs.

Bring on UF. This team showed they have heart, and they are only going to want it more having been this close but falling short. Biggest tests remaining will be getting the monkey of our backs in Jacksonville and pulling off a road victory in Knoxville. Our chances for the former haven’t been this good since Zook was at UF. Auburn’s luck has got to run out sooner or later.

It was a good game, and I was proud of this team. I wasn’t expecting us to be competitive but we were more than that. We were the better team last night but thanks to a handful of major mistakes and lady luck taking a dump on our face… we lost the game.

But I saw improvement from a team that suffered lots of necessary attrition during the off season. And I’m happy with that.

Now let’s turn that into some wins. Go Dawgs!

Well remember our coach made the statement that a Boise loss wasnt that big of a deal

I brought it up and got trashed on here

When you have a leader making comments like that its time to find someone who’s goal every year is to win the NC.

Though the chances are you will not you still should have a leader that doesnt make those statements. It just tells me he settles for mediocrity
