Bulldogs generous to a fault

Isaiah Crowell showed he's the real deal. Now if he can just stay in the game! (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

The bad news is that Georgia lost another “big” game Saturday, and in fact has only won one really big game in the past three seasons.

The good news: There are no more really “big” games left on their 2011 schedule.

A Bulldogs team that managed to hang 42 points on a South Carolina defense that’s considered the class of the SEC East ought to be favored in the remainder of that schedule.

Of course, a team as generous as Mark Richt’s Dogs were Saturday, giving away 21 points thanks to turnovers plus another 7 resulting from falling asleep on a fake punt, can always find a way to lose, so the 10-2 record that would salvage the season and save Richt’s job is far from certain.

Walking out of Sanford Stadium tonight, the initial impressions I took with me were a mixed bag: Georgia’s defense improved considerably from a week ago and essentially played well enough to win. … Let’s hope the turnover problems that plagued the Dogs a couple of seasons ago aren’t back, because as we saw against the Gamecocks, there’s no surer way to negate a good defensive performance. … Mike Bobo might be a slow learner, but he did apparently finally conclude that a short passing game is a better bet when your offensive line is inconsistent in protecting your quarterback. At times in the second half Saturday, it looked like Georgia had lifted a copy of Kellen Moore’s playbook. And it worked. … Isaiah Crowell is the real deal. And Bobo finally figured out that he needs to get the kid the ball with space to run. Sure, Crowell gave up a hurtful fumble, but he at least has the excuse of being a true freshman. What do we make of Aaron Murray still refusing to tuck the ball and safely take a sack? … In the first half, it seemed every time Crowell had two successive runs, he was replaced by Richard Samuel. Here’s hoping that wasn’t a conditioning thing. Finally, in the second half, Crowell got more of the reps he so badly needs to develop into the first-rate back he seems destined to become. … Two missed field goals in two games for Blair Walsh, and this week it wasn’t a long one like against Boise. Let’s hope this isn’t a trend. … If Richt really went for that onside kick late in the game rather than give his defense a chance for a stop with 2:15 left and three time outs still in his pocket because, as he said after the game, Christian Robinson was hurt and he didn’t think anyone else could get the D lined up right, the state of affairs at linebacker officially has reached red alert status.

So, yes, Georgia outplayed South Carolina, as Steve Spurrier said after the game. But at 0-2 that’s really sort of a tin-plated substitute for a silver lining.

I’m sure you other DAWG fan brothers would tell you go grow a SACK or stay home. I bet you want a trophy for just having your kid on a team.

Crowell 16 rushes, Lattimore 29 rushes, ALMOST TWICE the attemps! Why, beacuse Spurrier, as much as I hate him, is smart enough to use his weapons!

Does this mean Boise would crush the SEC East? Great moral victory! Congrats. Now they will run the table is what I am hearing……..It never ceases to amaze me how delusional UGA fans can be. I hope Richt and Bobo stay forever.

Crowell and Murray have a bright future. Crowell will be gone after next year. Sure would like to give Richt one more season after this one then have a coaching change.

I think people need to realize like ACDC1996 said that we are a young team. Young teams make mistakes.

Learn to accept you are a second tier program, quit expecting to win the big games (if there is any game defined as “big” when playing UGA anymore), and realize the BCS title game is about as far away as Mars for your school. Once your come to grip with these facts, losing won’t sting so bad. Georgia hasn’t been relevant in seven or eight years, and the only teams that get worked up to play you guys are the pancakes who are paid the big money to come in for a whipping (assuming that actually occurs). Spurrier punked you guys again, and doesn’t even have to use talent rich Florida to do it anymore____SHAMEFUL!!!

Sorry I can`t accept the Georgia coaching position. Still need to win a couple of national championships before I do charity work.

The first thing that UGA needs to do is to replace that damn dog Russ. He does nothing but lay in that air conditioned dog house on a bag of ice and pant and sleep.

Second, get rid of Grantham…he is as bad as Russ.

Everyone, if bobo would stay out of the shotgun formation, Dogs would have won by 21! Every time we went to shotgun in first half, the drive stalled and we tried for 3. The int, the fumble returned for tds were both a result of pressure on Murry due to shotgun. We also had a 3 and out deep in our territory due to shotgun that led to usc’s first TD. A new line does not need the pressure of shotgun, with only 5 men to block. Murry is also a run threat and out of the pocket he is dangerous. Doesn’t bozo get it?

Young team…Every program goes through cycles. Hell, UF is young and going through what will be there 2nd year of mediocrity.

Let’s see, USC is not the same program, UF is not the same program, uhmm, Texas is not the same program…every program has to rebuild. You can’t be perfect with recruiting. No one is.

Also, we have lost a lot of players due to injury, transfer, etc.

acdc1996_____quit being a homer and call it like it is. You haven’t been a “young” team for the last 8 years doofy. Come on, I mean I know Florida isnt gonna win the BCS this year, but I fully expect them to be right there in the next two or three. You guys can’t even beat us when we’re down and you’re sporting one of the many “dream teams” you have supposedly fielded. Florida Guy…I think UGA will be right there in the next year or two. I am not saying that we do not need a coaching change, but this was not on the coaches. Call a spade a spade.

As far as UGA losing to you guys, I can’t say anything but I do not think a new coach will change that series. I think there is a dark cloud hanging over UGA that Spurrier hung over us that we can’t seem to shake.

If you are saying it was the players fault because they didn’t execute, that is STILL the coaches fault.

Shotgun sux

acdc 1996, fumbles and interceptions came from pressure that came from shotgun formation, except for the bad exchange between murray and crowell. Bozo puts Murray in bad situations with his stupid fettish for shotgun. Hes got a 5 foot 10 QB who is highly mobile and a bunch of newbies on the line. Play action with a stud TE and TB and highly mobile QB works for this team. shotgun does not!!! See the results over two weeks. THIS IS NOT THE PLAYERS FAULT, it is coaching from people who are either to stupid or to stubborn to make changes to their style based on the player personnel they have. I would be willing to bet, we would be 2-0 right now if we had not run a single shotgun play this season..

acdc1996

I am not talking about execution…I am talking about fumbles and dumb throws that led to interceptions. That is on the players.

The coaches put the players in a position to win and win big. The players made mental errors.

I’m heart broken…Richt has lost his edge. Players and coaches find ways to lose, not to win. Auburn found a way to win today. That’s what good programs do. It’s a sad day to be a Dawg. Maybe I’m just being negative, but the truth is we are just not the program that we used to be.

Who are the “real” Bulldogs fans?

For some, a “real” fan is willing to see his players get terrible coaching and constantly lose… and keep cheering?!?!?!?

As an alum and a real fan, I think these players deserve better. Fire Richt. It’s been a 3 year slide, and this looks to be year 4.

UGA- Vince Dooley was smart, solid coach… but he went to Auburn so he wouldn’t get the job today.

When they hired Vince’s replacement, did we get a good football coach? Nope, we got an alum who spoke with a good ‘ol boy southern accent who’d never been a position coach. Thanks for Ray Goof, morons.

Next we try to hire a flash in the pan (ahem Mason) and get our back-up plan Donnan. Worked as well as a back-up plan could.

Next we hire the “hot young assistant” Christian Mark Richt. Did well in SEC when Fulmer and Zook were around… once league got Urban Meyer and Saban, and Richt looks outclassed.

Can we please get a HEAD COACH?!?! There are coaches out there who LOVE recruiting players in our state… I think they’d like to coach the state’s university.

gt joe…Why not blame Russ? If we had a better dog, Murray might not have held the ball away from body. Why not blame the band? If they played the fight song a little louder, then Crowell might not have fumbled the ball.

Heck, did Herschel ever fumble? Must have been Vince’s fault.

Why not blame Larry Munson for retiring? If he had not retired then Aaron would not have dared thrown a pick. Did David Green ever throw a pick?

Players make coaches or break coaches. If Ingram had not been playing for SC, UGA wins. He was a beast. He is also a VETERAN on SC roster.
