Is Bobo shooting himself in the foot with shotgun?

Aaron Murray was sacked six times by Boise State — all shotgun formation plays. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Aaron Murray was sacked six times by Boise State — all shotgun formation plays. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Remember the old Marvin Gaye single “Stubborn Kind of Fellow”? Seems like it would make a good theme song for Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who says that in this week’s game against South Carolina the Dogs will stick with that new no-huddle offense that failed so spectacularly for most of the opener against Boise State.

Now, I understand Bobo’s reasoning in going to the no-huddle; he wanted to increase the number of offensive plays the Dogs get in a game to counter those quick-hit spread offenses like Auburn’s that Georgia increasingly is seeing. Of course, it didn’t work out that way Saturday against Boise, with the Broncos winding up with 11 more offensive plays than Georgia.

But Bobo and Mark Richt say it wasn’t the no-huddle itself that was the problem; it was poor execution.

No argument there. What I wonder about is whether sticking with the no-huddle also will mean staying with that shotgun spread alignment Georgia used extensively in the Georgia Dome. (An analysis by Dancing in the Endzone shows the Dogs were in the shotgun for 78 percent of their offensive plays against Boise State.)

Mixing in some shotgun with Georgia’s traditional I-formation play-action attack probably would be a good thing, but going primarily shotgun not only doesn’t seem to match Georgia’s personnel, it makes the shaky offensive line play even more of a liability — all six plays on which Aaron Murray was sacked Saturday were in the shotgun.

Why make it harder on your quarterback?

A SMALLER SPOTLIGHT

We always knew opening the season against a highly ranked Boise State team in the Georgia Dome was a gamble for the Georgia football program, but UGA considered it a gamble worth taking in order to get Richt’s program back in the national spotlight.

That didn’t exactly work out so well. While the Georgia-Boise telecast on ESPN did big numbers in the Atlanta TV market, dominating sports viewing with a 16.7 Nielsen rating (the percentage of TV households), nationally the game drew only a 2.3 overnight rating, which was down 12 percent from what Oregon State-TCU did in that time slot last year.

The game also lagged behind the LSU-Oregon game on ABC, which had a 4.7 overnight rating, up 68 percent from LSU-North Carolina last year. Georgia-Boise also didn’t do as well as Monday night’s Miami-Maryland game, which drew a 3.4 overnight.

At least that means more people saw Maryland’s ugly jerseys than Georgia’s.

TIME FOR A PEP RALLY!

Here’s something the Dogs have been needing to do for some time: There’ll be a Bulldog Bash fan rally at Sanford Stadium starting at 8 p.m. Friday, with Gates 2 and 10 opening at 7:30. Free red rally towels will be handed out to the first 2,000 fans in attendance. Seating will be available in Sections 109-113. The UGA cheerleaders and the Redcoat Band will be on hand, and this also will be the first chance for fans to get a look at the new video board.

Sounds like a good way to kick off a big Friday night in Athens.

Richt (and most of his staff) have lost touch with what it takes to win, not just in the SEC, but in general. The game has past him by as he handed control over to Bobo and a series of inept DC. They are loaded with talent and haven’t any idea of what to do with it. No huddle against Boise? That’s a joke. Football 101. If they have a high powered offense, keep them off the field with the running game. Slow down the pace. 5-7. Thanks for the early years Richt.

And as far as staying with the no huddle offense, you have got love Dumbo’s thinking. If it doesn’t work, keep doing it!!!!!

I hate the shotgun, but we don’t have enough O-linemen to run the I-formation anymore.

We’ll be rotating in true freshman at O-line this week. We have to run the shotgun, or Murray will get sacked 23 times.

Bobo is the problem. He would be good at Arena League or flag football but he is clueless on how to establish a game plan that is good for the team. If CMR continues to allow this horrible offensive game management, he should be fired along with Bobo.

If UGA is to be a contender it must do the things that make for contenders – read and learn from “Art of War”. If there are not changes, nothing will change. One of the best lessons -”The King is only fond of words, and cannot translate them into deeds” – that is where the UGA football program is today.

Let the season play out longer than a game. Richt said he was going to be more cutting edge. Well 78% of the time in Shotgun it seems like he meant it. If the OL blocks and the WR’s can gain seperation it should help Murray see the field better. Remember the other half of you moan and whine b/c our QB-1 is 6′ tall. So yeah we looked bad after one game apparently implementing the O, but it was just one game. UGA fanbase is fickle and impossible to please. Richts press conference has become one of the most aggrivating things to listen to. He just does not get it at all. The press should be asking him the tough questions, because everyone BUT him sees the problem with the program.

CMR called a special meeting yesterday in which he asked the coaching staff… “What’s the most simple offensive scheme you have ever won a football game with?” Coach Bobo said he had no idea but saw a movie one time where they used “The Veer”. Coach McClendon said he saw that one as well. CMR then said that’s the answer… “It is built for teams with no depth and especially used when coordinator’s are over-matched by opponents.” CMR said he would call his buddy Bobby Bowden and see if he had any old tapes from his days at West Virginia that maybe he could look at.

Look for “The Veer Option” at a Sanford Stadium near you.

It is kinda embarrassing that the o line is saying they didn’t know how to block a certain scheme. I don’t understand how you have the entire off season to prepare your team for one game and then say ” we didn’t know how to block that scheme”, really…. I mean what was so complex it took the entire game to never figure it out. Now SC and the Ole Ball Coach, I don’t like our chances but I am very hopeful. The line is only 3. Winning the SEC is all we here; GA nor SC has ever won the east after losing this game so I am going out on a limb and saying it is do or die for CMR. I still believe, but just barely….

I keep seeing everybody bashing Bobo, you have got to remember that he is running Richts offense and Richt is very involved with it now. NewnanDog you obviously didn’t see the game. Murray got sacked from the Shotgun not the I. Most of the success in the passing game and running game came in the I-Formation not the shotgun. Since we ran mostly the gun, hence the lack of success.

UGA looked every bit as bad as last yr. They have more tallent on this team than most other SEC teams – although Murray is WAY over-rated as a QB. His arm is not very strong and his accuracy isn’t there.
Kentucky could have one player as good as Boykin & win 8 games. If Spurrier switched players they would win 11.

The buck stops here. Coach Richt has been given every opportunity in the world to turn this ship around, and he has remained stubborn throughout most of the process. He only seems to make decisions when it’s three years too late, and then makes them grudgingly, kicking and screaming the whole way. He has told the fans “he knows what the hell he’s doing”, and he’s told the faithful that they’re really not far off. And even when he’s had time to “study football now and become an expert”, things are still in mass confusion. Richt’s stubbornness and unwillingness to really take a look at what’s wrong will be his ultimate undoing. The game has passed him by now, and he is his (and our) own worst enemy. After we finished 6-7 and he told everyone there would be changes, “but don’t think there will be personnel changes”, it showed us all that he is more talk and less action. This will be his final year, and everyone from Steve Spurrier and Dan Mullen will help make sure of it. And then, we can finally look for a coach who will utilize the awesome talent base we have in the great state of Georgia and once again make us competitive.

The above picture says it all. Our OLineman are terrible and you can’t make a consistent gameplan because of it. Look at Murray’s eyes in the picture… Are they looking downfield or to an outlet back? No… He is looking at watching one of his OLineman get beat and wondering how long he has before he is on the turf. Our OLine was an embarrassment and I just don’t see it getting better. It’s really gonna be a long year.

I have tried my best to be supportive of these inept clowns that call themselves coaches in Athens. I hear what your saying about the pep rally Friday night, and am all for anything that will bring excitement and maybe a little edge for the game against the chickens.

The arrogant Mark Richt can save his breath talking down to me and most of the Georgia people that I know, because most of us played and or coached football, and do know the basic trends that go along with certain circumstances that certain looks from different teams. Now I know that Richt is tired of answering questions about the temperature of his seat, but hey it goes along with the 3 million dollar salary.

As I said, I go along with doing everything we can to support the team this weekend, but if the team looks lost again and is embarrassed again this week then I will do all I can to discourage any more support for this coaching staff. Enough is enough.

I don’t understand the comment of running the no huddle to get in more plays to offset other teams’ spread options. By running the no huddle, you simply create more plays in the game, giving BOTH teams more plays in the game. It isn’t like you each get 15 minutes to run as many plays as you can.

DawginLex

September 7th, 2011
11:14 am

So we are going to do no huddle and run the I formation with QB in shotgun?

Coach Bobo needs to educate all of us as to how that will work.

If we are in the shotgun, SC DE’s will have 10 sacks. Our defense is good enough to make plays and make stops, certainly more than 2010. Why give SC more possessions?

Run the I formation, slow the game down and run play action.

I don’t get the insanity Bobo is spewing.

I hope you enjoy coaching at Thomas County Central next year.

Question

September 7th, 2011
11:17 am

Why do I think Bobo views the game like Madden 11? No one ever runs I formation on video games, it’s more fun to run shotgun and throw bombs. And, no need to work on being disciplined, no one ever jumps offsides on video games. Look at the first series the last time we beat Florida (and jumped around like idiots in the endzone), didn’t we run the ball 10 straight times? I fell out of my chair when we came up to the line, got over the ball, then all stood up and looked over at the sideline for the play call – that’s not UGA football people. If we’re going to do that, hire Mike Leach!

Bobo is an easy target, but clearly the problem is the whole UGA coaching staff, that Richt recruited with Adams watching over his shoulder. There is a lack of imagination and energy, or in Grantham’s case, the wrong kind of energy.

Lowcountry Buldog: I have been going to UGA games for over 40 years and this is one of the most disappointing teams I have ever seen. The concensus of opinion of the people sitting around me at the Dome is that we are still unprepared. I look at the first two games as 8 quarters of football to get us back on track. The first qtr was good, 2nd and 3rd qtrs were terrible(sorry to be negative)and the 4th was ok. The problem is I don’t see enough improvement from last year for us to beat USC. And if we can’t beat USC, what chance do we have of winning the SECEAST?

I will be in Athens Sat, cooking out with my friends, drinking adult beverages and getting psyched up for the game. Please tell me that by 9pm I will be happy about UGA football. We have 4 qtrs to save the season and CMR’s job.

1. Other than the play that Boykin scored on, how many creative, innovative or inspired plays were called? NONE…… and Boykin never saw the ball again, nor was he a decoy.
2. How many times did we run a draw/trap on 2nd down after an incomplete 1st down pass? Almost EVERY time…..
3. After a 1st down penalty, how many times did we run the ball? Pretty much every time……
4. How many screen passes (to TB or WR) or quick-hitting fullback runs did we try? NONE….

We seemed to run the same few plays over and over and over, no matter what was working or not working…. While our line was pathetic, Coach Bobo’s dull play-calling helped to create many long-yardage situations. He stuck to his worst tendencies (see 2nd question above) and featured new ones (see question 3). If he doesn’t improve, it’s going to be more difficult for the offense to overcome its execution problems… Still, GO DAWGS!!!!!

A telling fact From ‘The Bleacher Report’…….

Georgia currently has the third most NFL starters. The others are Ohio St. (1st), Southern Cal (2nd), and Oklahoma (4th). In the past 12 years, Ohio State has played for three national titles, USC has played for two, and Oklahoma has played for the national championship four times. And of course UGA has played for the trophy 0 times during that span. If that doesn’t spell it out for you, it means you’re probably drinking the same Kool-Aid as Coach Richt.

There used to be a time when the QB had a play they could audible and it was up to the QB to make that call. I was disappointed that we don’t have enough faith in our 3rd year QB to let him run the offense. If you look back over Richt’s career at UGA, he has had more success running the ball out of the I formation and using play action. The same was true in the Boise game. So of course he’s going to double down on what was ineffective…STUBBORNESS. Also, I would point out that there are less O-Line injuries when you play smash mouth as opposed to a passing attack. The no-huddle usually works best when it comes when the other team does not expect it and you get them locked into a personnel package that is advantageous to whatever you are trying to do. How does that help to tell the team a week in advance that we are running the no huddle? They will be prepared for it and all it will do is tire out our undermanned o-line and keep our defense on the field the entire day. Because, I guarantee South Carolina is going to play a ball control-type game like they did last year and try to grind it out with Lattimore. With this strategy, we will be lucky to have 4 possessions in the 1st half.

Running the no-huddle offense most of the game is the exact opposite of what they need to do. Ball control is how you when games in the SEC. As others have said, the no-huddle works best when it is used infrequently and you don’t know it’s coming. Announcing it to the world the week before is beyond stupid, besides the fact that we aren’t very good at executing it. I’m confident that Richt DOESN’T “know what the hell he’s doing” and the only thing he’s on the “cutting edge” of is getting his head cut off.

The shotgun is designed to give the QB more time. So this whole article makes no sense.
If we dont have the personel for something then it is a running offense. We dont have a running back right now. Until Crowell shows us something else.
The only option we have is shotgun cause we got no line. the shotgun gives us another 2 to 3 steps away and time to throw.

Find some fullbacks who will knock some holes open and run the dam ball . When have we made a big deal out of being physical.
Our plan is soft and that is our approach. The next coach needs to hard-nosed who is committed to running to ball. Looks like we don’t believe in the athletes that we have recruited. Coach Richt’s CEO PLAN HAS FAILED MISERABLE.

I understand the need to get more plays in I suppose, But we just don’t seem very built for it right now. I suspect we will see it in a modified scaled-back version. I’m guessing that most of these hateful/critical comments come from folks that haven’t accomplished much in there own lives and thus put too much of their ego at stake by how the dawgs do., How about supporting our team win or lose. Try accomplishing something in your own life and you want feel the need to be so critical of others that are in the spot light/out there competing. McGarity will do whats necessary, whatever that turns out to be, at the end of the year.

Until then I’d suggest turning around our image of being fair weather fans to being the “Bulldog Nation” that cheers for our team successes and supports them through their effort to improve.

I was so excited about seeing the new team and some of our new stars that I couldn’t sleep Friday night. Happy with some of what I saw but disapointed that our LOS, especially offensive, doesn’t appear to be that good. That has haunted us for years.

When I heard the boos and saw Coach Richt look up to see people filing out I was completely disgusted. In fact, I turned the TV off and wondered just what is wrong with our fans. Good grief, grow up and lets become the best fans in America. That way we can start keeping our best players in state – would you want to go to Georgia and get harpooned by the AJC and be booed by the fans regularly? Spurrier the OLD Ball Coach tells the Georgia recruits he goes after – come to South Carolina where the fans love and support you regardless of the scoreboard. This year he’ll probably play the tape of us booing our team as they are out there getting there butts beat. They feel worse about it than we do,

I don’t think it was the no-huddle causing the bulk of the problems. And the shotgun? The shotgun was developed to give the QB more time to scan the field and throw, not less. So that ain’t it. Poor execution, poor coaching, poor preparation, poor play-calling, lack of adjustments and stubbornness are all to blame. If this was an anomoly and UGA wins out and gets a re-match with Boise in the National Title game, all will be forgotten. But somehow, I ain’t feeling it.

Running the no-huddle in order to run more plays is a bad reason to go no-huddle. All you have to do to run more plays is move the ball, huddle or no, which the offense wasn’t able to do. What going no-huddle will do is give your D less time to rest. A good reason to go no-huddle is to keep the opposing D from catching their breath – but the Bobo-No has to be the slowest no-huddle I’ve ever seen, giving the Broncos’ D plenty of time to line up. Or at least it seemed slow compared to the Broncos’ no-huddle, which very effectively winded the Bulldogs’ D. So if Bobo is going to stick with the no-huddle, I hope he speeds it up so it actually accomplishes it’s real purpose: catching the opposing D flat-footed.

He went on to describe what a collection of overbearing jerks we were. Bragging about our team. Putting down everyone else’s team. Now we’re booing our team on the field while there playing. Pitiful, even if the boos where directed at the Coaches. Yes, they may deserve it but the players don’t.
McGarity is a tough customer that loves Georgia. He’ll do what necessary but is there a need to have a crappy recruiting class. I hope we improve dramatically and decide that Richt and company should stay but if we stuggle to improve and continue to look like we’re under coached – I hope we do make a change, AT THE END OF THE YEAR WHEN THE NEW COACH CAN BE SELECTED AND ANNOUNCED AND THE RECRUITING CLASS CAN BE SALVAGED. IF WE CONTINUE TO LOOL LIKE THE WORST FAN BASE IN AMERICA AND WE WON”T BE ABLE TO GET A TOP COACH. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN.

I have zero confidence in Bobo.

How is our D supposed to play well if they never get a rest?

3 and out while running one minute off the clock doesn’t cut it.

Why in the world are you telling the world, Bobo, that we are going to run the no huddle shotgun vs. your toughest SEC apponent 5 days before the game????????????

No huddle works when you have QUICK strikes for 4,5,6,7 yards per play. Simply lining up and looking to the sidelines doesn’t work. It’s just a spread out huddle!

When is the last time we ran or even completed a SLANT ROUTE?

I would love to know what C. Thomas thinks about the draw plays he runs on 3rd and long.

Still trying to figure out how he threw players under the bus. By saying they executed poorly? Thank goodness the internet around when John McKay was asked about the Bucs execution after a lose when he answered he was in favor of it. I guess he was trashing his team as well. To much is being nit picked about the program right now.

I hope this is a ruse on Bobo’s part. SC’s strength is their pass rush. Alas, I think the “run & shoot” is probably what he will go with. This could get ugly.

I’m hoping for a GA win, but folks, it’s plain stupid to tell your opponent what your basic offensive strategy is and then having it printed for all the world to see. You would think our AD would step up and put a stop to some of this nonsense.

The only thing I can guess is that Richt knows that SC has struggles against spread type teams and done really well against traditional pro set.

Other than that, that’s all I got for explaining this.

dawgfan

September 7th, 2011
12:57 pm

The problem with this team and the entire program is between the ears and not on the X’s and O’s chalkboard. Richt said it himself. Whether you run the I or the spread you’ve still got to execute the plays for it to be successful. Our players are not being taught how to execute. They are not tough enough mentally. We get punched in the mouth and back down. We’ve seen it time and time again over the past 3 seasons. I could care less if we run the I formation, spread, triple option, wishbone or just throw a freaking hail mary on every play. Until this team learns how to play the game of football it won’t make a bit of difference. We will lose and lose often. Our offensive line cannot block. They couldn’t block in 2008 when were running the I formation with Knowshon and Southerland in the backfield (See Alabama and Florida game films if you’re brave enough) and they cannot block now running this hurry up shotgun crap. We cannot tackle. We cannot go a quarter without committing at least one mindnumbingly stupid penalty. This team has no idea how to play championship level football. Not a single clue and it falls 1,000% on the coaching staff.

Thanks for reading..

I do, Pago Pago Dawg. And Spurrier’s been washed-up longer than Richt. But Richt has lost his confidence, and it infects the team. Remember the trick plays, like the QB faking a handoff, turning his back to the line, and then wheeling around and firing a bomb? Richt doesn’t do things like that anymore. Otherwise, Bobo is going to sink Richt.

Utilize our TE’s with short passes.
Toss sweeps and screen passes to our backs on the outsides, not draw plays up the middle.

Don’t like the no huddle…..our offense was out of rhythm all night against Boise…stop look at sideline…it just messed up everyone’s timing….plus the SPEED of the no huddle on the 3 & outs esp. but the defense back out there very quickly and our defense gave out.

There are reasons why Pro teams—just use the no huddle at certain times—1. to surprise the opposing defense and get down the field in a hurry when time is runing out….2. to shake things up when the offense is flat. 3..to wear down defense……They don’t use it when most of the time because the offense needs to stay on the field as long as possilbe even on 3 and out to give their defense time to rest and hydrate.

It is a big mistake on Bobo part to go with no huddle all the time….It is not execution…It is game mgt that is important…..Richt should put his foot down and call the plays—–No huddle is just too risky and might very well cost Richt his job and hurt the program with recruiting when we have a coaching change.

The South Carolina game is big…Go back to the regular offense and correct the O-line problems, and the play calling.

Both were promoted by the head coach and neither has any experience other than at Georgia. Both had no proven track record for the jobs they were given. Both seem to fail at their jobs. Don’t look for a good team as long as Bozo is calling the offense.
Why many thought Georgia could beat Boise State is beyond me. Did fans forget that this Bozo run offense could not even get a touchdown on UCF? Defense is not near good enough to save the offense much less itself from the Bozo offense.

Break out some new uni’s again and again and again and again. Hmm, maybe UGA should concentrate on playing the game and not the look. And by the way, UGA played against Boise like the uniforms looked. Seriously, someone picked those to play in. And the team played like they looked. As far as I’m concerned UGA can play in those uniforms in every game this year.

A Fan:

That is true in general that the shotgun is designed to give the QB more time to throw and I don’t think anyone is suggesting we go 100% under center. HOWEVER, when we line up in a the shotgun it is obvious we are either going to throw or run a sprint draw up the middle.

So far this season, we haven’t seen much in the way of deception a la a screen pass off of it or a QB designed run that might keep the defense off balance and thus the pass rush off of Murray.

There were at least 2 sacks where they just rushed 4 however last week and they go to Murray quickly, so I don’t think the shotgun is the ONLY reason we got sacked 6 times.

Bill King is pointing out that the I formation was more successful last night, but we only ran it 20% of the time and we were stubbornly went back to the shotgun even when 4 straight I plays were successful.

Mix in some shotgun? sure, but don’t abandon the one thing that is working when you are struggline so mightily.

The problems with Georgia are complicated, Coach Richt has produced some good teams and won a lot of games, He is very respected as a good christian man and good role model for his players, He has won a couple of SEC championships and once finished #2 in the nation, As a result of this you want to give him every chance to turn his program around, Firing a coach should be the last resort as it disrupts the program for months if not years, Coach Richt has to know that his program is not up to par, He has made changes but with mixed results, His recent hire of Coach Grantham has yet to yield the kind of results that instill confidence in Coach Richts’ ability to access the ability of a prospective coach, And his blind confidence in Mike Bobo causes many to question wheather or not Richt can seprate being Head coach from being a good friend, Sometimes a Head coach has to make tough decisions, Firing a good friend is about as tough as it gets.

If we had executed and extended drives two things happen 1) Kellen Moore is on the sidelines 2) the D gets a rest…go back and look at the film our D did a real good job the first half, fatigue and lack of adjustments took its toll on them in the 2nd half.

I don’t know if the fans booing will have as much of an impact on recruiting as losing and looking unprepared have.

If we run 30 sprint draws against USC for 2 yards appiece, will Keith Marhall want to play here next year? If we give up 8 sacks and the OL has half a dozen penalities, will Vlademir (spelling?) want to verbally commit after the game?

How about playing games at 12:40 instead of later in the day and not being on TV because we are 2-4? How will that affect recruiting.

The season and Richt’s tenure are OVER. At this point, we are just discussing details. I like the idea of having an interim coach from the current staff take over next week win or lose the South Carolina game and break the bank to hire the best possible staff so that we can be competitive again in 2013. Good lordy people. Richt is not blindly “loyal” to coach Bobo. He is stuck with coach Bobo. You don’t fire BOTH co-ordinators at the same time. If the offense does not move forward this year, Richt would make whatever move he felt required. Friendship has nothing to do with it. This is the first year that it was practical to change that. Doing so last year would have been suicide, and it still might be. If the defense isn’t considerable better, does it really matter?

icedawg

Murray is a very good qb. What he lacks is a supporting cast on the line of scrimmage. The OL has played poorly for the past several years and this edition did not show us anything different in the opening game. The defense is problematic along the line and at linebacker, not being able to generate heat on the passer. The 3-4 has not looked good with this personnel. The defense has had difficultly stopping people and has therefore run out of gas later in the game. This has been the “dog’s style” for the past couple of years.

Then, I can post how I told you so when we fired Willie Martinez and ALL

ALL

of you wanted to fire Willie Martinez when I said he HAD to fire Mike Bobo.

I would rather be right as rain and as quickly as possible please.

Now, what is this nonsense that you can’t fire Mike Bobo now because not this year, not last year, but the year before that, he fired Willie Martinez ?

That’s 3 and a half million dollars total compensation annually that I am sure was pretty much all given to The Church.

What we need is for someone to come in and do ALL the hiring.

“But Bobo and Mark Richt say it wasn’t the no-huddle itself that was the problem; it was poor execution”

So let me get this straight – Bobo calls a draw play up the middle where Boise is sitting with 8 in a tight box with absolutely no chance of the RBs finding or the OL creating a gap to run through, but it’s the PLAYERS’ fault it didn’t work?!?!

Bobo keeps calling said play over and over and over, but it’s the PLAYERS’ fault that it didn’t work because they didn’t execute.

That’s the biggest bunch of crap I’ve ever heard. That’s like a general telling his troops to line up shoulder to shoulder in the middle of an open field completely exposed while the enemy is sitting in protected positons with snipers and then blaming the defeat on the troops lack of execution of the battle plan.

RedandBlackDAWG

September 7th, 2011

I admit, I would never be an offensive guru. When I played football, just after the Jurasic period, I played defensive end. One thing I do know though, is I don’t care what kind of formation the offense lines up in, they have got to have some solid calls from the OC, in order to be successful. If you know you aren’t moving the defensive line and are getting beat up front, why do you continually try and run up the middle? Did UGA, for the most part utilize our big FB or our big TE’s with any consistency. Did we try to control the ball, by spreading out their defense a little and how about a few drop off passes for 4 or 5 yards? Why can’t we adjust a little with the game and not keep trying over and over again, the same play that is not working?
I love my DAWGS I wish I could believe that somehow CMR and his coaches could put together an effective game plan, and have some originality in their play calling. Teams that play us need only spend a few hours in the tape room and they have the defensive game plan settled in and then they can concentrate on breaking down our defense. The solution there, is just to defense our bland offense, and by the 3rd quarter, the defense is tired from being on the field so much, they simply beat them up.

3) QB who is bad about stepping up into the pocket
4) QB who is terrible at releasing the ball on time
5) Team that is horrifically out of shape and poorly conditioned, to say the least
6) QB who will only throw short routes if it is to the overrated TE with the T-Rex arms who appears scared of going over the middle despite his size.

Add them all together and somehow Bobo thinks this equals a shotgun-first, no huddle-first offense? Wow, just wow.

Vince Dooley won 6 SEC Championship and 1 National Championship. He won 3 from 1980-1982. He was hired by Joel Eves in 1964. He won 3 SEC Championships in his first 16 years. He would have won it in 1983-84, but he couldn’t beat Auburn.

The similarities are 2 SEC Championships in 10 years. The only two since the aforementioned person retired, in the past ten years.

The only difference between a bum and a legend is time.

The #1 predictor of success is a good O-Line. Dooley was adamant that his best lineman be on offense. Currently UGA’s weakest link is the O-Line. Things don’t look good.

I’m convinced that CMR must go, but I would love for him to prove me wrong. I don’t think I can stand another lost year. I’ve really been looking forward to this year and the thought of “wait till next year” again is unbearable.

Million Dollar Question:

Of course, it would be better to get a great coach and it COULD get worse than it has the last couple of years, but that is very doubtful.

Georgia has enough pure talent and a built in recruiting advantage that at least 4-5 of the teams that Georgia typically plays are just overmatched.

Any of the top 20 high school football staffs in Georgia could have gone 6-7 with the talent and schedule that Georgia played last year. How much worse can it get when there are 2 nearly automatic wins on the schedule each year plus Vanderbilt?

I think the average housewife with a competent staff surounding her could win 3 games at UGA this year as a head coach.

I’m willing to risk “what is behind door number 2″

talking about the no huddle, I think the only reason they run it is so the QB gets a better look at The D. It does not speed up the game with the ref standing over the ball til the d gets ready, then the QB changes the play it takes longer. What Ga problem was both the o line and the d line sucks !

Based on the plays I saw. Boykins run came out of the shotgun package. He is set to the left of the formation, comes in motion, but resets in the backfield to the left of Murray who hands it off to him.

All 3 TDs came from a shotgun package. If they want to run an uptempo style of offense, then the shotgun is it. There are many runs off this set…Iso left, triple option, speed option, and etc.

Crowell is the idle back in a shotgun. He is not a “Walker” or “Lattimore”. Somewhere the when it was announced that a TE would line up in the backfield as a FB, everyone envisioned a power I formation and a power back. Do not think that is what they had in mind.

Actually, both he and Richt need to go as this game has left them both behind. No enthusiam, cannot remember snap counts, OL look as if they’re glued to the ground, out of shape. All of this after coach rejoiced at our S&C program. What S&C program? The no-huddle is supposed to be a fast snap thing to draw defense off. Our no-huddle is about as slow as a reg. huddle. Bobos job was to prepare this young man for his 3rd season, I honestly did not see an improvement from the UCF game. We aren’t getting into the end zone enough to compete with teams, how many screen passes did we throw from that pro-style offense. there are a lot of Richt…Haters & Supporters. Looking at this thing from a neutral point of view the last 2 games have down right embarrasing as a Dawg’s fan, it seems that when they lose momentum they just give up, there has been no fight!

The way it’s looking they’ll go 7-5, 6-6 or worse for the next few years anyway under the current coaching staff, I’m willing to take on chance on what’s behind door #2 as well. I just haven’t seen anything from this coaching staff in 3-4 years now that leads me to believe they are capable of turning this thing around.

yes…..no huddle should only be used in specific situations….to use no huddle all the time is big
mistake.

3 & out with no huddle is big advantage to other team…it is not about huddle or line up..

it is about time mgt….3 & out no huddle–does not give your defense time to rest…thats why we were gassed in 2 Q against Boise….Lattimore will pound us to death 8 minute drive and then if we keep it less than 2 minutes with no huddle –our defense is back on the field…no depth at lb.

we can’t afford to make big mistake……no huddle should be used when need to score quick–time running out..and when behind more 2 scores and time is factor or need to wear other defense down

no other offense is USA–pro, college or high school uses –no huddle all the time..

With poor OL play the shotgun could give Murray a few more nano seconds to get rid of the ball before being pummeled. Let’s face it, both the offensive and defensive lines are problematic at this point. It doesn’t matter who they put on the line. About the only 5 star talent on the team is at qb, receivers, special teams. The rest of the team is mediocre at best.

The “best SEC quarterback” talk in re Aaron Murray does not sink in with me at all. The Boise game starting going down hill when he threw the first half intercept. Outcome would have been the same but at least the game without the intercept would have stayed tied longer. Murray has never shown me he is deserving of the accolades he has gotten. I wonder if I’ve been watching the same Murray. He doesn’t hold a candle to what David Greene did at the same stage of his career. And Greene did not come in with all the fanfare. Demote Bobo. Call the plays Richt. Call the plays. Florida St went to crap when you left. You are a great OC as was evident by your track record at FLA ST. Call the plays. Call the plays. We have went steadily downhill ever since Bobo became OC and CERTAINLY since he started calling the plays. 78% of the time in the shotgun? Really? Where is the play action? The play fakes that we seen from David Green? Bobo. The BIGGEST problem with the UGA football team. He must win this week or lose play calling at MINIMUM. I support Richt FULLY. Bobo has extremely low support left. One game. It better be AWESOME planning and calling BOBO. Or you should demote yourself or resign. You must be starting to feel guilty when you cash your huge paycheck.

Call the plays Richt. Take over the offense. I know its a lot to do on top of being the head coach, but you got to do what you have got to do.

Do NOT let Bobo lose your job for you. We dont want you to lose your job coach. You have given us the most cheers, top 10 rankings and championships and title games and even a shot at the NC but the B_S picked LSU. It had been 20 years since we won an SEC championship before you and you gave us 2 and 6 10 win seasons in 8 years. We dont want to lose you. 6 10 win seasons in 7 or 8 years is the best in UGA history. You got many more in you but Bobo does not capable of running the offense, game planning or play calling in the SEC, especially when blocking needs improvement. Shotgun? no passes to backs? not even as safety valves? You want Murray hurt for some reason? You want to lose? I am sure the answer is no.

You just are not competent Bobo. You are the energy vampire. THROW TO CROWELL YOU IGNORANT MAN! Playaction you blind man! 2 tighet ends blocking sometimes you stupid man.
Short game Bobo. Short game. Then when they creep up to stop it, go deeper. Sheesh. Whats the worst that happens? We avg 4 yards a play?!

It seems like our playbook was reduced to about 5 plays against Boise. Here’s a question: If Coach Bobo and Boise’s OC had switched places, who would have outscored the other? I hate to say that I believe Boise would not have put 35 on the board with Bobo calling the plays. When is the last time that OUR offense was the most cutting-edge, innovative offense on the field….??? When is the last time we shocked our opponent with a game plan that totally threw them off of their game??? When……?!

I want to see Coach Richt be our coach for many years, but I am tired of offensive game plans and situational play-calling that make little sense. Our weak O-line needs great play-calling to improve its chances. It can’t succeed with predictable nonsense that sets up 3rd & long. GO DAWGS!!!

If UGA loses and HUTSON MASON doesn’t get a chance to play. Then RICHT & BOBO need to go Monday morning.

why should the Dawgs bother to huddle…that’s for teams that run a good offense.

I have an idea. Why don’t you make more yards per play, hince make more first downs. Seems like that would allow you to run more plays than your opponent by keeping their offense off the field and of course score more points. Isn’t that what good teams do..

Can you remember an offensive coach with similar problems lasting this long? Who is really protecting Bobo’s job? I guess one day we’ll find out.

TNT,

So, just to make sure I have this right – according to you please sir ?

Kirby Smart, we all know does not run Nick Saban’s Defense, he does. Always has. Always will.

Your reply TNT ?

Mark Richt runs nothing at UGA.

Now, if I am making this too simple, please just tell me.

We need a coach who has coached and has been successful.

You want a guy who you said won a NC. I thought that was Nick Saban who won the NC at LSU and at Alabama.

Silly me.

Your reply ?

Mark Richt runs nothing at UGA. I don’t know. I sort of figured that it is obvious that Mark Richt is not Nick Saban.

How mamy players have dreds and tatoos on LSU, FLA, AUB, ALA, FLA ST…,Some of you guys are a trip with the racial undertones on a football blog, but I think the coaching staff needs to show composure and keep the players composed. Run the I formation in my opinon, use our size and get the ball to our play makers crowell, and mitchell and on defense play man to man and tackle to keep down the yards after the catch or run, just play good, smart, sound, football

This isn’t Oklahoma, this is Georgia. We don’t run a spread offense, where we run every single play out of the shotgun, which is what Bobo did in the first half. Our offense is best when we run the ball out of the ace/i formation, then use the play action pass to open up our receivers. Murray completed 70 percent of his balls on a play action pass last year. It’s ok to run quick pass plays out of the shotgun every few plays for a different look, but not every single time. This is the strategy Bobo used during our five game stretch last year where we scored 30 or more points every game. It looks like Bobo looked at that videotape and decided that we should do the opposite. If we don’t see adjustments next week, it’s gonna be a long year…

I hope we do something to keep Clowney out of our backfield. My recommendation would be to run a two tight end line-up with Arthur Lynch on Clowney’s side every play. Arthur is a physical freak and they say he is a very good blocker. His role would be nothing but blocking Clowney and let Charles catch a bunch of passes.

So, again, it’s not the coaches’ fault, it’s the players’ “execution”? Mark Richt has descended in the the netherworld of coach-speak. When he’s no longer willing to criticize his strategy, it’s time for Richt to go.

1. Over-hype
2. Over-rated
3. Season begins
4. Loss(es) to teams “lesser”
5. Drop in polls
6. Drop out of polls
7. Hope to attend just ANY bowl
8. Return to step 1

Someone please explain this thing on offense about going to the line getting set, then backing off and everyone looking to the sidelines. I have seen more delay of game penalties doing this and the quarterback should have the play when he goes up to the line. Call me old school football but we need the a combination of shot gun and no huddle, besides new coaching.

So Boo Boo is staying no huddle. If they don’t execute better the Defense will again be worn down in the 2nd half.

This offense is offensive. Georgia fans are you really going to continue your “we’re gonna run the table after USC” garbage? You have one of the easiest schedules this season and you will still have a losing record. Another year where you cant beat UF and UT in the same season.

Bill – Sorry for being late to the party… What do you mean you understand going no-huddle to get more offensive plays (scoring opps vs stinky I suppose is the correct context)? You get more offensive plays only if you don’t go three-and-out on a routine basis and your D can actually stop the oppoonent. Otherwise the no-huddle is your enemy because it sends your tired D right back on the field. Bobo should worry about how to call a VARIETY of plays that utliize our strengths and do not play to the opponents strengths. For example – run your fast, massive FB out in front of the speedy RBs to negate the ineffectiveness of your O-line. Maybe even pull a guard and throw to that ex-TE now FB! Why is this so difficult?

I’m beginning to think Bobo is some kind of Manchurian Candidate. He was put in place to destroy our program from the inside. It’s all a dark conspiracy. Either that, or he’s retarded.

Bill -

What do you expect from Bobo. Here’s a guy who on first down throws the bomb and always follows that failed play with a run up the middle. You can set your watch to it.

When Monty Kiffen said it would take about 15 minutes to scheme against Bobo’s offense you knew we had a problem. We still have a problem and his name is Mike Bobo.

The reason people rush to judgement is the last 2 years were14&11. teams before that maybe have lost 11 games in the last 5 yrs. It’s ridicoulos and not acceptable in any way! Maybe the line on both sides or whoever,if they are going t ocus on their assigments maybe something needs to wake hem up! Wind sprints bear crawls! Maybe that will get their attention! There is not enough punishment or consequences for your mistakes! These guys are in college for a reason! They are suppose to interlectually smart! Come on Man! There is just not enough pay the price for your continued mistakes in football now days! Some of these teams are trated like babies! Grow up! Man up! Focus on your assigment! Run the Hell out of them! Then I bet that start producing! When I played if i didn;’t block or tackle or hit somebody & knock their Chin Strap loose! I knew when I got back to practice it would be literaly Hell In The Kitchen! Punish them If they dont prodcuce results! Where are the Paul Bear Bryant & The Vince Lombardi style type of coaches anymore! Enough Said!
