Is Bobo shooting himself in the foot with shotgun?

Aaron Murray was sacked six times by Boise State — all shotgun formation plays. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Aaron Murray was sacked six times by Boise State — all shotgun formation plays. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Remember the old Marvin Gaye single “Stubborn Kind of Fellow”? Seems like it would make a good theme song for Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who says that in this week’s game against South Carolina the Dogs will stick with that new no-huddle offense that failed so spectacularly for most of the opener against Boise State.

Now, I understand Bobo’s reasoning in going to the no-huddle; he wanted to increase the number of offensive plays the Dogs get in a game to counter those quick-hit spread offenses like Auburn’s that Georgia increasingly is seeing. Of course, it didn’t work out that way Saturday against Boise, with the Broncos winding up with 11 more offensive plays than Georgia.

But Bobo and Mark Richt say it wasn’t the no-huddle itself that was the problem; it was poor execution.

No argument there. What I wonder about is whether sticking with the no-huddle also will mean staying with that shotgun spread alignment Georgia used extensively in the Georgia Dome. (An analysis by Dancing in the Endzone shows the Dogs were in the shotgun for 78 percent of their offensive plays against Boise State.)

Mixing in some shotgun with Georgia’s traditional I-formation play-action attack probably would be a good thing, but going primarily shotgun not only doesn’t seem to match Georgia’s personnel, it makes the shaky offensive line play even more of a liability — all six plays on which Aaron Murray was sacked Saturday were in the shotgun.

Why make it harder on your quarterback?

A SMALLER SPOTLIGHT

We always knew opening the season against a highly ranked Boise State team in the Georgia Dome was a gamble for the Georgia football program, but UGA considered it a gamble worth taking in order to get Richt’s program back in the national spotlight.

That didn’t exactly work out so well. While the Georgia-Boise telecast on ESPN did big numbers in the Atlanta TV market, dominating sports viewing with a 16.7 Nielsen rating (the percentage of TV households), nationally the game drew only a 2.3 overnight rating, which was down 12 percent from what Oregon State-TCU did in that time slot last year.

The game also lagged behind the LSU-Oregon game on ABC, which had a 4.7 overnight rating, up 68 percent from LSU-North Carolina last year. Georgia-Boise also didn’t do as well as Monday night’s Miami-Maryland game, which drew a 3.4 overnight.

At least that means more people saw Maryland’s ugly jerseys than Georgia’s.

TIME FOR A PEP RALLY!

Here’s something the Dogs have been needing to do for some time: There’ll be a Bulldog Bash fan rally at Sanford Stadium starting at 8 p.m. Friday, with Gates 2 and 10 opening at 7:30. Free red rally towels will be handed out to the first 2,000 fans in attendance. Seating will be available in Sections 109-113. The UGA cheerleaders and the Redcoat Band will be on hand, and this also will be the first chance for fans to get a look at the new video board.

Sounds like a good way to kick off a big Friday night in Athens.

Everybody thinks Bobo needs to go which I agree, but to me the DC Gratham appears to be in over his head in the SEC, its one thing to be a defensive line coach, it is quit another to be the Defensiv Coordinator.

Bobo put up 21, Grantham gave up 35——————-you tell me who is the sorriest

Richt and Bobo are absolutely clueless. The ship continues to sink. At some point you have to jump over the side. I am nearing the railing.

We have 2 face facts Bobo is not the answer, I have no clue what UGA will do next but, Murray looked shell-shocked out there. Bobos job was to prepare this young man for his 3rd season, I honestly did not see an improvement from the UCF game. We aren’t getting into the end zone enough to compete with teams, how many screen passes did we throw from that pro-style offense. there are a lot of Richt…Haters & Supporters. Looking at this thing from a neutral point of view the last 2 games have down right embarrasing as a Dawg’s fan, it seems that when they lose momentum they just give up, there has been no fight!

The shotgun speeds the game up, the defense needs the offense to stay on the field more than 1 minute drives.

I get so tired of hearing this “getting a new coach/staff will set our program back forever” garbage. Chizik won a Natl’ Championship in his 2nd year with Auburn. Saban won a NC in his 3rd year at Bama. Les Miles won a NC in his 3rd year at LSU.

The way it’s looking they’ll go 7-5, 6-6 or worse for the next few years anyway under the current coaching staff, I’m willing to take on chance on what’s behind door #2 as well. I just haven’t seen anything from this coaching staff in 3-4 years now that leads me to believe they are capable of turning this thing around.

To replace Richt…I suggest Darth Vader. Sure, I know you’re thinking “he’s dead right” but as obsessed as the Emperor was with cloning I’m sure there’s a few Vader clones still out there somewhere.

Scoring 21 and giving up 35 and your opponent camped on your 3 yard line when the game ends seems to me more of a defensive problem than an offensive problem.

Georgia puts more players in the NFL because the NFL coaches know they can get a good player for lesser monetary value (diamond in the rough) in the 3 and 4th round that hasn’t been coached well, therefore he has no established technique traits to forget, he’s a mental blank slate to program into their new system.

yes…..no huddle should only be used in specific situations….to use no huddle all the time is big
mistake.

3 & out with no huddle is big advantage to other team…it is not about huddle or line up..

it is about time mgt….3 & out no huddle–does not give your defense time to rest…thats why we were gassed in 2 Q against Boise….Lattimore will pound us to death 8 minute drive and then if we keep it less than 2 minutes with no huddle –our defense is back on the field…no depth at lb.

we can’t afford to make big mistake……no huddle should be used when need to score quick–time running out..and when behind more 2 scores and time is factor or need to wear other defense down

no other offense is USA–pro, college or high school uses –no huddle all the time..

NJ Dawg…I agree, if Mullen can win a bowl game in Mississippi with 2 and 3 star players, amagine what he could do at UGA with 5 star? Basically ANY Div. 1 coach come to UGA could win a National Title next year. You have to work very hard to be as inept as Richt and Bobo…..

All I can think is that hopefully this is some kind of psychological warfare from Bobo. As we all know…the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. The no huddle offense yielded us an abysmal offense, a tired defense and a butt whooping by Boise…..yeah….let’s stick with it!!

If this isn’t psychological warfare then Bobo may need to be fitted for a straight jacket.

part of O-line problems were no huddle and not getting snap count and be able to hear Murray…we can’t have false starts and missed blocking assignments….

With poor OL play the shotgun could give Murray a few more nano seconds to get rid of the ball before being pummeled. Let’s face it, both the offensive and defensive lines are problematic at this point. It doesn’t matter who they put on the line. About the only 5 star talent on the team is at qb, receivers, special teams. The rest of the team is mediocre at best.

Richt has got to take over play calling for the sake of UGA team and sake of his job…Bobo can coach QB and coordinate some….but Richt needs to call plays—especially if Bobo is that crazy about running no huddle all the time…Bobo will cost Richt his job

I can’t say I’ll miss the recruiting focus on finesse players and never recruiting any O-linemen. Games are won and lost in the trenches in the SEC and although we get some great recruiting classes there’s been a lack of focus on recruiting for the trenches for a while now.

It is not the quantity of plays, but the quality of plays. No huddle makes no sense the way UGA ran it. It was a hurry up then wait no huddle??? No point. Run the football to control the clock. UGA is not Oregon.

The “best SEC quarterback” talk in re Aaron Murray does not sink in with me at all. The Boise game starting going down hill when he threw the first half intercept. Outcome would have been the same but at least the game without the intercept would have stayed tied longer. Murray has never shown me he is deserving of the accolades he has gotten. I wonder if I’ve been watching the same Murray. He doesn’t hold a candle to what David Greene did at the same stage of his career. And Greene did not come in with all the fanfare. Greene never beat himself by wildly putting the ball up for grabs.

This is just another significant sidebar to the near universal feelings that Richt, Bobo and Grantham are inept as overpaid loser coaches

“… the game [BSU v. UGA] drew only a 2.3 overnight rating, which was down 12 percent from what Oregon State-TCU did in that time slot last year.”

There’s your proof that UGA has become totally irrelevant both regionally and nationally. In other words, no one outside of the state even pays attention to UGA anymore. You’re looking at a mid- to lower-tier SEC team now, light-years from being a contender.

And you can credit Mark Richt for that.

Run the I formation….Why the shotgun….I tell you why, there are no runningbacks and olinemen to run the football and there is not a go to wide receiver….The only thing that possibly could be Bobo’s fault is not recruiting good enough players….He’s running the same plays that Knowshon Mareno ran, and he looked pretty damn good running them….ALL YOU GUYS ON HERE THINK YOU GOT THE ANSWERS AND YOU CAN COACH, BUT YOU DON’T KNOW JACK ABOUT FOOTBALL…ALL YOU KNOW IS WHEN SOMETHING ISN’T WORKING TO FUSS AT THE COACHES….GET YOU A LIFE OUTSIDE CRITICIZING THESE GUYS, WHO ARE ACTUALLY IN THE ARENA WHERE YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN…YOU HIDE IN THE HILLS, WATCH THE BATTLE, THEN COME OUT AFTER THE BATTLE IS OVER AND FINISH KILLING THE WOUNDED….DISAPPOINTED IN UGA FANS….IT WOULDN’T MATTER WHO WAS COACHING, WE DON’T HAVE THE TALENT TO KNOCK PEOPLE OFF THE LINE, OR TO MAKE BIG PLAYS IN SPACE…YOU CAN’T RUN THE I FORMATION IN THE SEC WITHOUT A HOSS AT TAILBACK. WE GOT ONE BIG AS A HOSS, BUT HE CAN’T MAKE ANYBODY MISS AND THE FRESHMAN IS STILL LEARNING….POOR RECRUITING OF SKILL PEOPLE IS THE DOWNFALL OF THE OFFENSE, NOT BOBO’S PLAYCALLING….HE KNOWS HE DOESN’T HAVE THE RB’S AND THE OLINE TO POUND IT, SO HE RUNS THE SHOTGUN…..

To the person on this blog that called Richt a “scumbag”, you sir obviously know nothing about his character. Pretty low down to call him a scumbag…a cheap shot that has no basis. He is a good man no matter how you feel about his coaching skills. I am a frustrated fan like many of you but is it necessary to take cheap shots at Richt or team members? These players are just kids and are doing the best that they can. I truly believe that this team will get better as the season progresses. I can’t believe that UGA fans were booing the Dawgs on Sat. Whether they were making a statement to the coaches or AD, it looks as though it was directed at the team which is just inconceivable. Win or lose, I am a Dawg fan for life. Would love to see the W’s piling up again & respectability restored in our program, and ultimately it will happen again. Richt has done a lot for this program and I thank him for that. Yes, the Dawgs have underperformed the last few yrs., and whether Richt is to blame or not, he has a record of success at UGA and should be at least acknowledged for that. I know this post will draw ire from fellow fans, but I stand behind this team. GO DAWGS!

If Mark Richt is given another chance after this year they definitely need a better offensive coordinator. If Bobo actually called some good plays in good situations made the momentum would have shifted to Georgia. I would say give Richt another year and have him hire a new OC if that doesn’t help then Richt needs to be fired.
