Is Bobo shooting himself in the foot with shotgun?

Aaron Murray was sacked six times by Boise State — all shotgun formation plays. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Remember the old Marvin Gaye single “Stubborn Kind of Fellow”? Seems like it would make a good theme song for Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who says that in this week’s game against South Carolina the Dogs will stick with that new no-huddle offense that failed so spectacularly for most of the opener against Boise State.

Now, I understand Bobo’s reasoning in going to the no-huddle; he wanted to increase the number of offensive plays the Dogs get in a game to counter those quick-hit spread offenses like Auburn’s that Georgia increasingly is seeing. Of course, it didn’t work out that way Saturday against Boise, with the Broncos winding up with 11 more offensive plays than Georgia.

But Bobo and Mark Richt say it wasn’t the no-huddle itself that was the problem; it was poor execution.

No argument there. What I wonder about is whether sticking with the no-huddle also will mean staying with that shotgun spread alignment Georgia used extensively in the Georgia Dome. (An analysis by Dancing in the Endzone shows the Dogs were in the shotgun for 78 percent of their offensive plays against Boise State.)

Mixing in some shotgun with Georgia’s traditional I-formation play-action attack probably would be a good thing, but going primarily shotgun not only doesn’t seem to match Georgia’s personnel, it makes the shaky offensive line play even more of a liability — all six plays on which Aaron Murray was sacked Saturday were in the shotgun.

Why make it harder on your quarterback?

A SMALLER SPOTLIGHT

We always knew opening the season against a highly ranked Boise State team in the Georgia Dome was a gamble for the Georgia football program, but UGA considered it a gamble worth taking in order to get Richt’s program back in the national spotlight.

That didn’t exactly work out so well. While the Georgia-Boise telecast on ESPN did big numbers in the Atlanta TV market, dominating sports viewing with a 16.7 Nielsen rating (the percentage of TV households), nationally the game drew only a 2.3 overnight rating, which was down 12 percent from what Oregon State-TCU did in that time slot last year.

The game also lagged behind the LSU-Oregon game on ABC, which had a 4.7 overnight rating, up 68 percent from LSU-North Carolina last year. Georgia-Boise also didn’t do as well as Monday night’s Miami-Maryland game, which drew a 3.4 overnight.

At least that means more people saw Maryland’s ugly jerseys than Georgia’s.

TIME FOR A PEP RALLY!

Here’s something the Dogs have been needing to do for some time: There’ll be a Bulldog Bash fan rally at Sanford Stadium starting at 8 p.m. Friday, with Gates 2 and 10 opening at 7:30. Free red rally towels will be handed out to the first 2,000 fans in attendance. Seating will be available in Sections 109-113. The UGA cheerleaders and the Redcoat Band will be on hand, and this also will be the first chance for fans to get a look at the new video board.

Sounds like a good way to kick off a big Friday night in Athens.

Seriously, if Richt leaves after this year, who do we get as his replecement? Sometimes the grass is not always greener. If we screw the next hire up, things could bo from bad to VERY bad. Dan Mullen?? Peterson? Thoughts??

richt has blown it because of a combination of things

Not doing whatever it took to secure Van gorder long term
Keeping willie too long
Making Bobo OC

He could have left bobo as QB coach and we would still be in trouble even with Richt calling the plays because of Willie being there. It wouldn’t have mattered who was calling the plays.

Bobo is a solid QB coach. He should go back to doing that right now and Richt should take over the play calling.

that is the only chance we have and it ain’t much of one

I’m thinking that, at this point, Bobo is mad at GA fans and so will go with the no-huddle out of spite.

What’s amusing to me is when Bozo gives his take on the offensive line. Like he even has a clue. He’s a former QB, who wasn’t even that good. We need some a**hole as the OC that gets in people’s faces, and challenges them.

Why are we going with a shot gun hurry up? We have a 270 lb FB, and we are going hurry up!?!? What other major college football program in the nation would tolerate Bozo the Clown running their offense. Oh, the pain!

“If the OL blocks and the WR’s can gain seperation it should help Murray see the field better. Remember the other half of you moan and whine b/c our QB-1 is 6′ tall. So yeah we looked bad after one game apparently implementing the O”

(1) I know you are the expert, not I, but I thought you said NO ONE could criticize the players or the coaches ?
(2) Does that just only therefore obviously apply to EVERYONE ELSE, not to you YOURSELF sir ?
(3) I guess that answer is quite obvious where here you say the OL isn’t blocking, the WR are not getting separation, Aaron Murray cannot see the field, and YEAH WE LOOKED BAD implementing the Offense. I will try to do as you say, and not as you do ? Is that what you want ?
(4) Again, I am no expert, but it seems to me that with Aaron Murray already the # 72 worst at being sacked in the nation last season, and 6 more to start this season already, that he doesn’t need to see the field better. He sees the field, up close and personal more than any QB in the nation.

6 sacks running the shotgun? Hmmmmmmm……if you don’t succeed in six tries, just keep on doing it? Odds are, you might get one to work now and then if your tongues don’t fall out trying. Bobo, how many hurry ups have you done in your life? Guess you don’t think the offense needs a breather between plays. Now that you’ve telegraphed what you’re going to do with SC, I suppose you don’t think they can get ready for you, huh? GO DAWGS!! Do the best you can as long as you have Bobo!!

Guys, I looove UGA and always been a Richt fan but like everyone else i feel time for a change. How many times do we need to go thru this crap??????? We should be on top of the SEC!!! Now what coach do you get to replace Richt….ummm.. heck idk. Things could get worse for us then what do we do?. I think GA fans should be careful on how they treat Richt, cause that could scare off any prospect coaches. We need a proven coach to come help us..Do i dare say our old nemesis should come here (cant beleive im fixin to say this)……ughh…….ok here it goes…Urban Myer.!!. sounds funny but he would do good here, if GA would have him or if he would come that is.

I have not been as down on Bobo as many, but holy s*** is this a terrible idea.

1) Terrible O-Line
2) QB who likes to drop back (even when in shotgun, preventing a decent pocket from forming and allowing decent DE to have an easy path around the corner)
3) QB who is bad about stepping up into the pocket
4) QB who is terrible at releasing the ball on time
5) Team that is horrifically out of shape and poorly conditioned, to say the least
6) QB who will only throw short routes if it is to the overrated TE with the T-Rex arms who appears scared of going over the middle despite his size.

Add them all together and somehow Bobo thinks this equals a shotgun-first, no huddle-first offense? Wow, just wow.

Vince Dooley won 6 SEC Championship and 1 National Championship. He won 3 from 1980-1982. He was hired by Joel Eves in 1964. He won 3 SEC Championships in his first 16 years. He would have won it in 1983-84, but he couldn’t beat Auburn.

The similarities are 2 SEC Championships in 10 years. The only two since the aforementioned person retired, in the past ten years.

The only difference between a bum and a legend is time.

LakeDawg

The #1 predictor of success is a good O-Line. Dooley was adamant that his best lineman be on offense. Currently UGA’s weakest link is the O-Line. Things don’t look good.

I’m convinced that CMR must go, but I would love for him to prove me wrong. I don’t think I can stand another lost year. I’ve really been looking forward to this year and the thought of “wait till next year” again is unbearable.

Million Dollar Question:

Of course, it would be better to get a great coach and it COULD get worse than it has the last couple of years, but that is very doubtful.

Georgia has enough pure talent and a built in recruiting advantage that at least 4-5 of the teams that Georgia typically plays are just overmatched.

Any of the top 20 high school football staffs in Georgia could have gone 6-7 with the talent and schedule that Georgia played last year. How much worse can it get when there are 2 nearly automatic wins on the schedule each year plus Vanderbilt?

I think the average housewife with a competent staff surounding her could win 3 games at UGA this year as a head coach.

I’m willing to risk “what is behind door number 2″

talking about the no huddle, I think the only reason they run it is so the QB gets a better look at The D. It does not speed up the game with the ref standing over the ball til the d gets ready, then the QB changes the play it takes longer. What Ga problem was both the o line and the d line sucks !

Based on the plays I saw. Boykins run came out of the shotgun package. He is set to the left of the formation, comes in motion, but resets in the backfield to the left of Murray who hands it off to him.

All 3 TDs came from a shotgun package. If they want to run an uptempo style of offense, then the shotgun is it. There are many runs off this set…Iso left, triple option, speed option, and etc.

Crowell is the idle back in a shotgun. He is not a “Walker” or “Lattimore”. Somewhere the when it was announced that a TE would line up in the backfield as a FB, everyone envisioned a power I formation and a power back. Do not think that is what they had in mind.

Bobo has no clue, as he has shown last year, and so far, this year. To keep him on as OC is the same as hiring an alcoholic to bar tend. Actually, both he and Richt need to go as this game has left them both behind. No enthusiam, cannot remember snap counts, OL look as if they’re glued to the ground, out of shape. All of this after coach rejoiced at our S&C program. What S&C program? The no-huddle is supposed to be a fast snap thing to draw defense off. Our no-huddle is about as slow as a reg. huddle. Enough is enough!

Bob

Bill, there’s a difference between stubborn and over your head. The only smart thing Bobo did was have a dozen kids so Richt wouldn’t fire him. I also think the game has passed Richt by, too, just like T Bowden @Clemson, B. Bowden @FSU, etc. The old FSU model won’t work anymore.
