Is Bobo shooting himself in the foot with shotgun?

Aaron Murray was sacked six times by Boise State — all shotgun formation plays. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Remember the old Marvin Gaye single “Stubborn Kind of Fellow”? Seems like it would make a good theme song for Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who says that in this week’s game against South Carolina the Dogs will stick with that new no-huddle offense that failed so spectacularly for most of the opener against Boise State.

Now, I understand Bobo’s reasoning in going to the no-huddle; he wanted to increase the number of offensive plays the Dogs get in a game to counter those quick-hit spread offenses like Auburn’s that Georgia increasingly is seeing. Of course, it didn’t work out that way Saturday against Boise, with the Broncos winding up with 11 more offensive plays than Georgia.

But Bobo and Mark Richt say it wasn’t the no-huddle itself that was the problem; it was poor execution.

No argument there. What I wonder about is whether sticking with the no-huddle also will mean staying with that shotgun spread alignment Georgia used extensively in the Georgia Dome. (An analysis by Dancing in the Endzone shows the Dogs were in the shotgun for 78 percent of their offensive plays against Boise State.)

Mixing in some shotgun with Georgia’s traditional I-formation play-action attack probably would be a good thing, but going primarily shotgun not only doesn’t seem to match Georgia’s personnel, it makes the shaky offensive line play even more of a liability — all six plays on which Aaron Murray was sacked Saturday were in the shotgun.

Why make it harder on your quarterback?

A SMALLER SPOTLIGHT

We always knew opening the season against a highly ranked Boise State team in the Georgia Dome was a gamble for the Georgia football program, but UGA considered it a gamble worth taking in order to get Richt’s program back in the national spotlight.

That didn’t exactly work out so well. While the Georgia-Boise telecast on ESPN did big numbers in the Atlanta TV market, dominating sports viewing with a 16.7 Nielsen rating (the percentage of TV households), nationally the game drew only a 2.3 overnight rating, which was down 12 percent from what Oregon State-TCU did in that time slot last year.

The game also lagged behind the LSU-Oregon game on ABC, which had a 4.7 overnight rating, up 68 percent from LSU-North Carolina last year. Georgia-Boise also didn’t do as well as Monday night’s Miami-Maryland game, which drew a 3.4 overnight.

At least that means more people saw Maryland’s ugly jerseys than Georgia’s.

TIME FOR A PEP RALLY!

Here’s something the Dogs have been needing to do for some time: There’ll be a Bulldog Bash fan rally at Sanford Stadium starting at 8 p.m. Friday, with Gates 2 and 10 opening at 7:30. Free red rally towels will be handed out to the first 2,000 fans in attendance. Seating will be available in Sections 109-113. The UGA cheerleaders and the Redcoat Band will be on hand, and this also will be the first chance for fans to get a look at the new video board.

Sounds like a good way to kick off a big Friday night in Athens.

The problems with Georgia are complicated, Coach Richt has produced some good teams and won a lot of games, He is very respected as a good christian man and good role model for his players, He has won a couple of SEC championships and once finished #2 in the nation, As a result of this you want to give him every chance to turn his program around, Firing a coach should be the last resort as it disrupts the program for months if not years, Coach Richt has to know that his program is not up to par, He has made changes but with mixed results, His recent hire of Coach Grantham has yet to yield the kind of results that instill confidence in Coach Richts’ ability to access the ability of a prospective coach, And his blind confidence in Mike Bobo causes many to question wheather or not Richt can seprate being Head coach from being a good friend, Sometimes a Head coach has to make tough decisions, Firing a good friend is about as tough as it gets.

Our goverment allows the top Dog to learn on the job, Bobo should be able to do the same. This is how are country operates. Just like the top Dog job in this country no wants the job and you are left what ever you get. CMR will be fired for allowing CMB to learn on the job just like our pres. will not get re-elected for not knowing how to run gov. Sad but true!

When NO….NO….NO team that has an Opening as a COACH and Bobo isn’t on the RADAR, then that SHOULD Richt all he needs to know. There isn’t a SINGLE DC in the SEC that fears BOBO. They Fear the Talent the Dawgs have. The Dawgs Can make BIG plays, but the other DC’s laugh at the thought of being Out Coached by Bobo.

Folks its not the no huddle that is the problem, the no huddle is designed to give an offense more plays….its the execution of the no huddle that is problem..the entire 2nd half when we ran the no huddle we didn’t execute and we continually had the D on the field, they wore down. If we had executed and extended drives two things happen 1) Kellen Moore is on the sidelines 2) the D gets a rest…go back and look at the film our D did a real good job the first half, fatigue and lack of adjustments took its toll on them in the 2nd half.

Georgedawg:

I don’t know if the fans booing will have as much of an impact on recruiting as losing and looking unprepared have.

If we run 30 sprint draws against USC for 2 yards appiece, will Keith Marhall want to play here next year? If we give up 8 sacks and the OL has half a dozen penalities, will Vlademir (spelling?) want to verbally commit after the game?

How about playing games at 12:40 instead of later in the day and not being on TV because we are 2-4? How will that affect recruiting.

The season and Richt’s tenure are OVER. At this point, we are just discussing details. I like the idea of having an interim coach from the current staff take over next week win or lose the South Carolina game and break the bank to hire the best possible staff so that we can be competitive again in 2013. The Dream teamers will be Juniors and RS Sophmores.

Good lordy people. Richt is not blindly “loyal” to coach Bobo. He is stuck with coach Bobo. You don’t fire BOTH co-ordinators at the same time. If the offense does not move forward this year, Richt would make whatever move he felt required. Friendship has nothing to do with it. This is the first year that it was practical to change that. Doing so last year would have been suicide, and it still might be. If the defense isn’t considerable better, does it really matter?

icedawg

Murray is a very good qb. What he lacks is a supporting cast on the line of scrimmage. The OL has played poorly for the past several years and this edition did not show us anything different in the opening game. The defense is problematic along the line and at linebacker, not being able to generate heat on the passer. The 3-4 has not looked good with this personnel. The defense has had difficultly stopping people and has therefore run out of gas later in the game. This has been the “dog’s style” for the past couple of years.

BS. Richt had a chance to make a run at Friedgen and didn’t do it. My opinion was he may have been scared that McGarity would have had options had this season turned out like it’s starting to turn out. Not saying that’s the way it is but sure is coincidental. I don’t dislike Bobo at all but he’s sure not first class OC material.

What I still don’t understand is why all the DISNEYdawgs.com want everything to stay like it is until the end of the year.

I mean if you ALL say that the change has to be made at the end of the year, what in the world is different with that from what everyone else says (83% of us all say we lose to South Carolina), that he should already have been fired. Fire him now.

Then, I can post how I told you so when we fired Willie Martinez and ALL

ALL

of you wanted to fire Willie Martinez when I said he HAD to fire Mike Bobo.

I would rather be right as rain and as quickly as possible please.

Now, what is this nonsense that you can’t fire Mike Bobo now because not this year, not last year, but the year before that, he fired Willie Martinez ?

The guy has no clue how to hire anyone on his staff.

He has lost his job because of Mike Bobo.

That’s 3 and a half million dollars total compensation annually that I am sure was pretty much all given to The Church.

What we need is for someone to come in and do ALL the hiring.

Obviously, inquiring minds want to know who in this Earthy World needs to be retained ?

Oh, you cannot fire Mike Bobo now, because he fired Willie Martinez not in 2011, not in 2010, but in 2009.

Is anyone really surprised that Bobo is going to stick with something that didn’t work? I think the no huddle out of the shotgun would be okay if some short passes were thrown in to limit the amount of time Murray is in the pocket. Possibly, run some bootlegs. Unfortunately this game plan doesn’t do anything for the running game.

Bobo took too many hits when he ran the triple option long time ago. It shows in his dumbfounded play calling. Now for CMR, I am still trying to understand why he keeps making the same mistakes, over, and over, and over. I think maybe he drank too much kool-aide during his Ford commercials.

Bobo did an excellent job recruiting. The OC and DC do most of the day to day overseeing of their units, this is where Richt has failed, these critical positions. Richt could have protected Bobo and hired an OC, now, it looks like they all get fired. The Dooleys will take care of Bobo, he will end up at UT working for Derek, he’s family. Saban could take him, as they are close to the Dooleys also.

“But Bobo and Mark Richt say it wasn’t the no-huddle itself that was the problem; it was poor execution”

So let me get this straight – Bobo calls a draw play up the middle where Boise is sitting with 8 in a tight box with absolutely no chance of the RBs finding or the OL creating a gap to run through, but it’s the PLAYERS’ fault it didn’t work?!?!

Bobo keeps calling said play over and over and over, but it’s the PLAYERS’ fault that it didn’t work because they didn’t execute.

That’s the biggest bunch of crap I’ve ever heard. That’s like a general telling his troops to line up shoulder to shoulder in the middle of an open field completely exposed while the enemy is sitting in protected positons with snipers and then blaming the defeat on the troops lack of execution of the battle plan.

I admit, I would never be an offensive guru. When I played football, just after the Jurasic period, I played defensive end. One thing I do know though, is I don’t care what kind of formation the offense lines up in, they have got to have some solid calls from the OC, in order to be successful. If you know you aren’t moving the defensive line and are getting beat up front, why do you continually try and run up the middle? Did UGA, for the most part utilize our big FB or our big TE’s with any consistency. Did we try to control the ball, by spreading out their defense a little and how about a few drop off passes for 4 or 5 yards? Why can’t we adjust a little with the game and not keep trying over and over again, the same play that is not working?
I love my DAWGS I wish I could believe that somehow CMR and his coaches could put together an effective game plan, and have some originality in their play calling. Teams that play us need only spend a few hours in the tape room and they have the defensive game plan settled in and then they can concentrate on breaking down our defense. The solution there, is just to defense our bland offense, and by the 3rd quarter, the defense is tired from being on the field so much, they simply beat them up.

GO DAWGS and GATA If Possible.
