Is Bobo shooting himself in the foot with shotgun?

Aaron Murray was sacked six times by Boise State — all shotgun formation plays. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Remember the old Marvin Gaye single “Stubborn Kind of Fellow”? Seems like it would make a good theme song for Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who says that in this week’s game against South Carolina the Dogs will stick with that new no-huddle offense that failed so spectacularly for most of the opener against Boise State.

Now, I understand Bobo’s reasoning in going to the no-huddle; he wanted to increase the number of offensive plays the Dogs get in a game to counter those quick-hit spread offenses like Auburn’s that Georgia increasingly is seeing. Of course, it didn’t work out that way Saturday against Boise, with the Broncos winding up with 11 more offensive plays than Georgia.

But Bobo and Mark Richt say it wasn’t the no-huddle itself that was the problem; it was poor execution.

No argument there. What I wonder about is whether sticking with the no-huddle also will mean staying with that shotgun spread alignment Georgia used extensively in the Georgia Dome. (An analysis by Dancing in the Endzone shows the Dogs were in the shotgun for 78 percent of their offensive plays against Boise State.)

Mixing in some shotgun with Georgia’s traditional I-formation play-action attack probably would be a good thing, but going primarily shotgun not only doesn’t seem to match Georgia’s personnel, it makes the shaky offensive line play even more of a liability — all six plays on which Aaron Murray was sacked Saturday were in the shotgun.

Why make it harder on your quarterback?

A SMALLER SPOTLIGHT

We always knew opening the season against a highly ranked Boise State team in the Georgia Dome was a gamble for the Georgia football program, but UGA considered it a gamble worth taking in order to get Richt’s program back in the national spotlight.

That didn’t exactly work out so well. While the Georgia-Boise telecast on ESPN did big numbers in the Atlanta TV market, dominating sports viewing with a 16.7 Nielsen rating (the percentage of TV households), nationally the game drew only a 2.3 overnight rating, which was down 12 percent from what Oregon State-TCU did in that time slot last year.

The game also lagged behind the LSU-Oregon game on ABC, which had a 4.7 overnight rating, up 68 percent from LSU-North Carolina last year. Georgia-Boise also didn’t do as well as Monday night’s Miami-Maryland game, which drew a 3.4 overnight.

At least that means more people saw Maryland’s ugly jerseys than Georgia’s.

TIME FOR A PEP RALLY!

Here’s something the Dogs have been needing to do for some time: There’ll be a Bulldog Bash fan rally at Sanford Stadium starting at 8 p.m. Friday, with Gates 2 and 10 opening at 7:30. Free red rally towels will be handed out to the first 2,000 fans in attendance. Seating will be available in Sections 109-113. The UGA cheerleaders and the Redcoat Band will be on hand, and this also will be the first chance for fans to get a look at the new video board.

Sounds like a good way to kick off a big Friday night in Athens.

This has the same feel we had during the Shula years. While we wanted him to be successful so badly it became painfully obvious that his loyalty to his underachieving assistants and offensive schemes was not going to change and we were going to be no better than a middle of the road on our best day team.. Solid recruiting classes provided only character problems with no overall improvement. Like Shula Coach Richt is a very good person and one hates to see the inevitable divorce.

What? Bobo not wanting to change his game plan? You’re kidding? He has no idea how to change anything. Wait until this week when we have our smallest running back trying to run up the middle on every third and long play! He is clueless!!

Judging by your silence, you understand that you’re wrong and should wisely go back to the local Widespread Panic show and pretend it’s still 1993. Keep on Walkin > Wonderin > Walking and maybe JB will make it all go away.

Will, your satire about using the Veer might actually be the answer. Many of the high schools in my area use it. You need a smart, confident QB, and a couple of fast tailbacks. The rest of the offense lines’ up and blocks pretty much the same scheme from play to play. That might work for the dawgs.

Boaterdawg

….and you can run the Veer from the no huddle, because the QB and the tailbacks are the only ones who need to know which direction your going.

UGA ran the Veer from 1974 to 1978. It didn’t work out all that well. Of course, if I had been coaching it, it would have worked out fine. I am the Veer-Master. We won 5 state titles at Thomas Co Central with teh Veer. Ah, if only they would hire me back. I keep thinking I am gonna wake up from this nightmare I am in over in Bainbridge and find myself back at good ol TCC.

Now……Bobo also didn’t know what he was doing in High School, either. We used to beat him like a Government mule when he was the QB at Thomasville High. Didn’t have no smarts then, doesn’t habe em now. Seems like the only thing he does best is………Make babies!!

Don’t like the no huddle…..our offense was out of rhythm all night against Boise…stop look at sideline…it just messed up everyone’s timing….plus the SPEED of the no huddle on the 3 & outs esp. but the defense back out there very quickly and our defense gave out.

There are reasons why Pro teams—just use the no huddle at certain times—1. to surprise the opposing defense and get down the field in a hurry when time is runing out….2. to shake things up when the offense is flat. 3..to wear down defense……They don’t use it when most of the time because the offense needs to stay on the field as long as possilbe even on 3 and out to give their defense time to rest and hydrate.

It is a big mistake on Bobo part to go with no huddle all the time….It is not execution…It is game mgt that is important…..Richt should put his foot down and call the plays—–No huddle is just too risky and might very well cost Richt his job and hurt the program with recruiting when we have a coaching change.

The South Carolina game is big…Go back to the regular offense and correct the O-line problems, and the play calling.

Mark Richt family was the one who encouraged Mark to go no huddle at FSU. He was doing it in a 2 minute drill to come back and win games. She said, why not do it all the time? He did, and they blew out teams.

They did it quickly like a 2 minute drill. Not looking to the sideline for the next play. They knew the plays they were going to run and boom!

The dawgs will win their share. They just can’t compete with Boise State. Back in the good old days (Dooley), they would have opened aginst Wofford at home, won big, and this week dawg fans would be hollering, “we’re number one!” Once they get scheduling under control, they’ll be okay.

How do you shoot yourself in the foot, when you are already the worst offensive coordinator in football ?

Shoot yourself in the foot implies that there is a dire consequence from some silly action. When the worst that can happen to you in such a cirmcumstance, is that you achieve the bottom of the pit – where you already are – it is not possible to shoot oneself in the foot.

Bozo and Ray Goof are very similar. Both have names that can easily be made to sound stupid. Both come from S. Georgia and were quarterbacks. Both were promoted by the head coach and neither has any experience other than at Georgia. Both had no proven track record for the jobs they were given. Both seem to fail at their jobs. Don’t look for a good team as long as Bozo is calling the offense.
Why many thought Georgia could beat Boise State is beyond me. Did fans forget that this Bozo run offense could not even get a touchdown on UCF? Defense is not near good enough to save the offense much less itself from the Bozo offense.

Break out some new uni’s again and again and again and again. Hmm, maybe UGA should concentrate on playing the game and not the look. And by the way, UGA played against Boise like the uniforms looked. Seriously, someone picked those to play in. And the team played like they looked. As far as I’m concerned UGA can play in those uniforms in every game this year.

A Fan:

That is true in general that the shotgun is designed to give the QB more time to throw and I don’t think anyone is suggesting we go 100% under center. HOWEVER, when we line up in a the shotgun it is obvious we are either going to throw or run a sprint draw up the middle.

So far this season, we haven’t seen much in the way of deception a la a screen pass off of it or a QB designed run that might keep the defense off balance and thus the pass rush off of Murray.

There were at least 2 sacks where they just rushed 4 however last week and they go to Murray quickly, so I don’t think the shotgun is the ONLY reason we got sacked 6 times.

Bill King is pointing out that the I formation was more successful last night, but we only ran it 20% of the time and we were stubbornly went back to the shotgun even when 4 straight I plays were successful.

Mix in some shotgun? sure, but don’t abandon the one thing that is working when you are struggline so mightily.
