Is Bobo shooting himself in the foot with shotgun?

Aaron Murray was sacked six times by Boise State — all shotgun formation plays. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Remember the old Marvin Gaye single “Stubborn Kind of Fellow”? Seems like it would make a good theme song for Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who says that in this week’s game against South Carolina the Dogs will stick with that new no-huddle offense that failed so spectacularly for most of the opener against Boise State.

Now, I understand Bobo’s reasoning in going to the no-huddle; he wanted to increase the number of offensive plays the Dogs get in a game to counter those quick-hit spread offenses like Auburn’s that Georgia increasingly is seeing. Of course, it didn’t work out that way Saturday against Boise, with the Broncos winding up with 11 more offensive plays than Georgia.

But Bobo and Mark Richt say it wasn’t the no-huddle itself that was the problem; it was poor execution.

No argument there. What I wonder about is whether sticking with the no-huddle also will mean staying with that shotgun spread alignment Georgia used extensively in the Georgia Dome. (An analysis by Dancing in the Endzone shows the Dogs were in the shotgun for 78 percent of their offensive plays against Boise State.)

Mixing in some shotgun with Georgia’s traditional I-formation play-action attack probably would be a good thing, but going primarily shotgun not only doesn’t seem to match Georgia’s personnel, it makes the shaky offensive line play even more of a liability — all six plays on which Aaron Murray was sacked Saturday were in the shotgun.

Why make it harder on your quarterback?

A SMALLER SPOTLIGHT

We always knew opening the season against a highly ranked Boise State team in the Georgia Dome was a gamble for the Georgia football program, but UGA considered it a gamble worth taking in order to get Richt’s program back in the national spotlight.

That didn’t exactly work out so well. While the Georgia-Boise telecast on ESPN did big numbers in the Atlanta TV market, dominating sports viewing with a 16.7 Nielsen rating (the percentage of TV households), nationally the game drew only a 2.3 overnight rating, which was down 12 percent from what Oregon State-TCU did in that time slot last year.

The game also lagged behind the LSU-Oregon game on ABC, which had a 4.7 overnight rating, up 68 percent from LSU-North Carolina last year. Georgia-Boise also didn’t do as well as Monday night’s Miami-Maryland game, which drew a 3.4 overnight.

At least that means more people saw Maryland’s ugly jerseys than Georgia’s.

TIME FOR A PEP RALLY!

Here’s something the Dogs have been needing to do for some time: There’ll be a Bulldog Bash fan rally at Sanford Stadium starting at 8 p.m. Friday, with Gates 2 and 10 opening at 7:30. Free red rally towels will be handed out to the first 2,000 fans in attendance. Seating will be available in Sections 109-113. The UGA cheerleaders and the Redcoat Band will be on hand, and this also will be the first chance for fans to get a look at the new video board.

Sounds like a good way to kick off a big Friday night in Athens.

UGA football won’t be any good because I put a curse on them since they didn’t recruit my son in football. You invite him to visit and but don’t have the time to get to know him. He did sign with a better team, so for the next 5 years… a curse has been place on GA football team…

It is third and three, shotgun formation, toss the ball deep to a receiver that is beaten by the defensive player. Is this the same game plan BoBooo is going to continue. Stick with that game plan BoBooo and you will be perfect 0-2. Hey you are college educated.

Amen Lake, coaching by committee. Really Lowcountry, think about it, the first three of four series we run the ball every down. What have they got to lose other than their damn pride. We did that against GT what three years ago and ending up with the best rushing attack of the Mark Richt Era.

We can get Chip or Bradley to set Bobo up with a computer, log him onto the blog and he can take real time information from us “arm chair” coaches. Can’t be any worse can it? I knew it was going to get better after all.

Mobile and Lake,

Have a sense of humor guys. The comment was definitely tongue in cheek.

Also if its 3rd and 3—- my call

Shotgun 3 WR 1 TE IC as my tailback

I run a option with AM to the strong side and use his mobility to either get the first down or pitch to IC. Make the WR try and hold a flipping block.

I don’t care what tpye of offense you run, if you have got somebody calling the shots that ain’t got a clue (Bobo) it is not going to matter. Damen Evans waited until the end of the season to fire CWM (Richt) didn’t! How long will it take McGlarity to PLEASE get BoBo out of town? I don’t think McGlarity will make it through the season untill he gets some serious threats from some big UGA supporters to make the move or they will pull out of some of their big backings. I’ve backed Richt for years even while people were bashing him, but I’m leaning towards the other side of the fence now; Richt knows what needs to be done, if he doesn’t do it, well he’d got to go also!

If McGarity has taken a lot of duties off Coach Richt so that he can focus on winning games, then Coach Richt should take over the play calling and give Bobo the QB coaching only.
Otherwise, Bobo is going to sink Richt.
We are not playing to the strength of the players we have.
Utilize our TE’s with short passes.
Toss sweeps and screen passes to our backs on the outsides, not draw plays up the middle.

just a reminder…UGA got beat by a MWC team 5 days ago despite being basically @ home and having the MWC team missing 2 starters. Though the SEC does have 2-3 really good teams that will likely be part of the Nat’l Champ conversation, UGA is not one of them. They’re one of those 8 or 9 other teams that will cover themselves in the SEC banner in hopes that they will somehow be good through osmosis. Wrong thought…just ask Ole Miss.

Would Buck Belue make a great head coach? Offensive Coordinator? He says some really logical things on 680, while still showing love and respect for UGA.

I like that he said he would do some consulting for them. He was miffed that Kwame didn’t have his big long arms up on to try to distract and block passes.

@WDE,

Maybe you forgot that we beat UF 31-7 and USC – 26-17 last year right there in the Peach Bowl. Remember Greg Reid knocking the teeth out of Marcus Lattimore and then completely shutting down Alshon Jeffries? Probably not because you were likely freezing at the Liberty Bowl losing to UCF.

RE; “poor execution” = blaming the players.
If you as Coach blame poor execution on one or two bad games that is one thing.
If you pull that out of the hat for season after season, game after game then I’m sorry stop it already. It is NOT poor execution it is poor coaching!

We may well lose to OU but we certainly won’t look like the clowns UGA looked like on Sat – you see we have talent AND coaching.

I love this plan. Not only is Bobo and Richt not going to change the offensive scheme that failed this weekend, but we’ve issued a press release to telegraph this information to the most notorious coaching mind in the SEC…Steve Spurrier…a man who pretty much sits around all off-season thinking of ways to beat his most hated rival…UGA. Simply brilliant.

UGA Coaches: amaze me with some kind of miracle coaching job or I’ll be adding my name to the Facebook “Fire Mark Richt” page right after the game.
