Is Bobo shooting himself in the foot with shotgun?

Aaron Murray was sacked six times by Boise State — all shotgun formation plays. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Remember the old Marvin Gaye single “Stubborn Kind of Fellow”? Seems like it would make a good theme song for Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who says that in this week’s game against South Carolina the Dogs will stick with that new no-huddle offense that failed so spectacularly for most of the opener against Boise State.

Now, I understand Bobo’s reasoning in going to the no-huddle; he wanted to increase the number of offensive plays the Dogs get in a game to counter those quick-hit spread offenses like Auburn’s that Georgia increasingly is seeing. Of course, it didn’t work out that way Saturday against Boise, with the Broncos winding up with 11 more offensive plays than Georgia.

But Bobo and Mark Richt say it wasn’t the no-huddle itself that was the problem; it was poor execution.

No argument there. What I wonder about is whether sticking with the no-huddle also will mean staying with that shotgun spread alignment Georgia used extensively in the Georgia Dome. (An analysis by Dancing in the Endzone shows the Dogs were in the shotgun for 78 percent of their offensive plays against Boise State.)

Mixing in some shotgun with Georgia’s traditional I-formation play-action attack probably would be a good thing, but going primarily shotgun not only doesn’t seem to match Georgia’s personnel, it makes the shaky offensive line play even more of a liability — all six plays on which Aaron Murray was sacked Saturday were in the shotgun.

Why make it harder on your quarterback?

A SMALLER SPOTLIGHT

We always knew opening the season against a highly ranked Boise State team in the Georgia Dome was a gamble for the Georgia football program, but UGA considered it a gamble worth taking in order to get Richt’s program back in the national spotlight.

That didn’t exactly work out so well. While the Georgia-Boise telecast on ESPN did big numbers in the Atlanta TV market, dominating sports viewing with a 16.7 Nielsen rating (the percentage of TV households), nationally the game drew only a 2.3 overnight rating, which was down 12 percent from what Oregon State-TCU did in that time slot last year.

The game also lagged behind the LSU-Oregon game on ABC, which had a 4.7 overnight rating, up 68 percent from LSU-North Carolina last year. Georgia-Boise also didn’t do as well as Monday night’s Miami-Maryland game, which drew a 3.4 overnight.

At least that means more people saw Maryland’s ugly jerseys than Georgia’s.

TIME FOR A PEP RALLY!

Here’s something the Dogs have been needing to do for some time: There’ll be a Bulldog Bash fan rally at Sanford Stadium starting at 8 p.m. Friday, with Gates 2 and 10 opening at 7:30. Free red rally towels will be handed out to the first 2,000 fans in attendance. Seating will be available in Sections 109-113. The UGA cheerleaders and the Redcoat Band will be on hand, and this also will be the first chance for fans to get a look at the new video board.

Sounds like a good way to kick off a big Friday night in Athens.

Hands on hips. Your right. He likes to shake his little shoulders when he runs. I ain’t so sure about their head coach either. Fake tan, hair parted down the middle, with “a hint of tint”. What a program. A lot of “ambiguity” surrounding it. At least you had no doubts about the guy riding around Buckhead, drunk, with a pair of panties in his lap. Now that’s more like it!

Nothing like a sideways running game and leaky pass protection to create confidence in a team. I mean, the other team’s defense.

what does being a fan have to do with thinking your team will lose?
I am a UGA fan and will always be. I love the dawgs. I have been watching them and supporting them for 30 something years.
But reality says we aint no good. I think i can still be a fan and realize we will struggle this year.
But i do hope for the best.

I never dreamed the no-huddle could look so bad, AD. My yearning for it still had the memory of David Greene leading the O down the field for a couple of scores per game, usually at the beginning of the game and the start of the 2nd half.

You know, kinda like Boise ran it.

Running the no-huddle in order to run more plays is a bad reason to go no-huddle. All you have to do to run more plays is move the ball, huddle or no, which the offense wasn’t able to do. What going no-huddle will do is give your D less time to rest. A good reason to go no-huddle is to keep the opposing D from catching their breath – but the Bobo-No has to be the slowest no-huddle I’ve ever seen, giving the Broncos’ D plenty of time to line up. Or at least it seemed slow compared to the Broncos’ no-huddle, which very effectively winded the Bulldogs’ D. So if Bobo is going to stick with the no-huddle, I hope he speeds it up so it actually accomplishes it’s real purpose: catching the opposing D flat-footed.

Back in the glory days I lived in Denver. When we won the NC, the headline in the Denver sports top columnist editorial was “Red Beans and Rice – I hate Georgia fans. He went on to describe what a collection of overbearing jerks we were. Bragging about our team. Putting down everyone else’s team. Now we’re booing our team on the field while there playing. Pitiful, even if the boos where directed at the Coaches. Yes, they may deserve it but the players don’t.
McGarity is a tough customer that loves Georgia. He’ll do what necessary but is there a need to have a crappy recruiting class. I hope we improve dramatically and decide that Richt and company should stay but if we stuggle to improve and continue to look like we’re under coached – I hope we do make a change, AT THE END OF THE YEAR WHEN THE NEW COACH CAN BE SELECTED AND ANNOUNCED AND THE RECRUITING CLASS CAN BE SALVAGED. IF WE CONTINUE TO LOOL LIKE THE WORST FAN BASE IN AMERICA AND WE WON”T BE ABLE TO GET A TOP COACH. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN.
PLEASE SUPPORT THE TEAM!

Unfortunately true Lex. I said it last year, and said it a few minutes ago. I would put the burden right square on the shoulders of the Oline offensively and let them know it up front. I still think them capable if directly challenged. Once fancy pants abandons the run and starts willy nilly flinging the ball around it’s all over but the crying. In that case, I will be on the bridge selling kool aid shots for $8 getting ready for the other Carolina.

I have zero confidence in Bobo.

How is our D supposed to play well if they never get a rest?

3 and out while running one minute off the clock doesn’t cut it.

Why in the world are you telling the world, Bobo, that we are going to run the no huddle shotgun vs. your toughest SEC apponent 5 days before the game????????????

No huddle works when you have QUICK strikes for 4,5,6,7 yards per play. Simply lining up and looking to the sidelines doesn’t work. It’s just a spread out huddle!

When is the last time we ran or even completed a SLANT ROUTE?

I would love to know what C. Thomas thinks about the draw plays he runs on 3rd and long.

Bobo is a QB coach. Nothing more, nothing less.

IT’S TIME TO SAVE YOUR JOB, MARK RICHT.

Poor execution? again with that line? CMR has been throwing the players under the bus
with that line ever since the debacle against WVU in the dome.
UGA Was OUT COACHED and the team was out played. It was Men against boys.
Bobo has proven he is incapable of half time adjustments.
The real disappointment was the D. looked like a Coach Willie D all over again.

Still trying to figure out how he threw players under the bus. By saying they executed poorly? Thank goodness the internet around when John McKay was asked about the Bucs execution after a lose when he answered he was in favor of it. I guess he was trashing his team as well. To much is being nit picked about the program right now.

I hope this is a ruse on Bobo’s part. SC’s strength is their pass rush. Alas, I think the “run & shoot” is probably what he will go with. This could get ugly.

I’m hoping for a GA win, but folks, it’s plain stupid to tell your opponent what your basic offensive strategy is and then having it printed for all the world to see. You would think our AD would step up and put a stop to some of this nonsense.

DawginLex

The only thing I can guess is that Richt knows that SC has struggles against spread type teams and done really well against traditional pro set.

Other than that, that’s all I got for explaining this.

dawgfan

September 7th, 2011
12:57 pm

The problem with this team and the entire program is between the ears and not on the X’s and O’s chalkboard. Richt said it himself. Whether you run the I or the spread you’ve still got to execute the plays for it to be successful. Our players are not being taught how to execute. They are not tough enough mentally. We get punched in the mouth and back down. We’ve seen it time and time again over the past 3 seasons. I could care less if we run the I formation, spread, triple option, wishbone or just throw a freaking hail mary on every play. Until this team learns how to play the game of football it won’t make a bit of difference. We will lose and lose often. Our offensive line cannot block. They couldn’t block in 2008 when were running the I formation with Knowshon and Southerland in the backfield (See Alabama and Florida game films if you’re brave enough) and they cannot block now running this hurry up shotgun crap. We cannot tackle. We cannot go a quarter without committing at least one mindnumbingly stupid penalty. This team has no idea how to play championship level football. Not a single clue and it falls 1,000% on the coaching staff.

Thanks for reading..

That is true the D gets no rest under this Bobo Offense but enough with the ruse.
If this team gets whipped by SC and UT then sack CMR finally and be done with it.
The AD should be blunt with him. Win the SEC East this season, CMR and our supposed
top recruiting classes, it should be “win the East or hit the bricks”.

I do, Pago Pago Dawg. And Spurrier’s been washed-up longer than Richt. But Richt has lost his confidence, and it infects the team. Remember the trick plays, like the QB faking a handoff, turning his back to the line, and then wheeling around and firing a bomb? Richt doesn’t do things like that anymore. I think he’s burned out, done, and it started around 2006. No shame there, but we need to end the misery and move on.
