Is Bobo shooting himself in the foot with shotgun?

Aaron Murray was sacked six times by Boise State — all shotgun formation plays. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Remember the old Marvin Gaye single “Stubborn Kind of Fellow”? Seems like it would make a good theme song for Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who says that in this week’s game against South Carolina the Dogs will stick with that new no-huddle offense that failed so spectacularly for most of the opener against Boise State.

Now, I understand Bobo’s reasoning in going to the no-huddle; he wanted to increase the number of offensive plays the Dogs get in a game to counter those quick-hit spread offenses like Auburn’s that Georgia increasingly is seeing. Of course, it didn’t work out that way Saturday against Boise, with the Broncos winding up with 11 more offensive plays than Georgia.

But Bobo and Mark Richt say it wasn’t the no-huddle itself that was the problem; it was poor execution.

No argument there. What I wonder about is whether sticking with the no-huddle also will mean staying with that shotgun spread alignment Georgia used extensively in the Georgia Dome. (An analysis by Dancing in the Endzone shows the Dogs were in the shotgun for 78 percent of their offensive plays against Boise State.)

Mixing in some shotgun with Georgia’s traditional I-formation play-action attack probably would be a good thing, but going primarily shotgun not only doesn’t seem to match Georgia’s personnel, it makes the shaky offensive line play even more of a liability — all six plays on which Aaron Murray was sacked Saturday were in the shotgun.

Why make it harder on your quarterback?

A SMALLER SPOTLIGHT

We always knew opening the season against a highly ranked Boise State team in the Georgia Dome was a gamble for the Georgia football program, but UGA considered it a gamble worth taking in order to get Richt’s program back in the national spotlight.

That didn’t exactly work out so well. While the Georgia-Boise telecast on ESPN did big numbers in the Atlanta TV market, dominating sports viewing with a 16.7 Nielsen rating (the percentage of TV households), nationally the game drew only a 2.3 overnight rating, which was down 12 percent from what Oregon State-TCU did in that time slot last year.

The game also lagged behind the LSU-Oregon game on ABC, which had a 4.7 overnight rating, up 68 percent from LSU-North Carolina last year. Georgia-Boise also didn’t do as well as Monday night’s Miami-Maryland game, which drew a 3.4 overnight.

At least that means more people saw Maryland’s ugly jerseys than Georgia’s.

TIME FOR A PEP RALLY!

Here’s something the Dogs have been needing to do for some time: There’ll be a Bulldog Bash fan rally at Sanford Stadium starting at 8 p.m. Friday, with Gates 2 and 10 opening at 7:30. Free red rally towels will be handed out to the first 2,000 fans in attendance. Seating will be available in Sections 109-113. The UGA cheerleaders and the Redcoat Band will be on hand, and this also will be the first chance for fans to get a look at the new video board.

Sounds like a good way to kick off a big Friday night in Athens.

It says it all when our strength and conditioning is so strong that our defense is gassed 3 plays into the 2nd half. When you out weight your opponent as much as we did last week it seems obvious you should be able to hammer the ball. Football is all about adjustments and this coaching staff never makes the adjustment during a game to use what works. It looks like we’ll have a new coach next year and maybe a winning team in 2 or 3 years. oh well par for the course as a dawg fan

I’ve already said… While there is room for improvement on the defense. I thought they did a decent job. Now it should be up to Bobo that we give them rest between series.

I like Mark Richt but the 4 year slide has coincided with turning over the plays to Bobo….i personally think we need a coordinator that implements the spread attack……ever since Alabama whipped us in 2008 we have looked unprepared, undisciplined, with no focus….with all of that speed and talent…..as Mark May put it “we look like tarzan but play like jane”

I told everybody that there would be no change. CMR thinks he’s right and everybody else is a rube. If you look back over Richt’s career at UGA, he has had more success running the ball out of the I formation and using play action. The same was true in the Boise game. So of course he’s going to double down on what was ineffective…STUBBORNESS. Also, I would point out that there are less O-Line injuries when you play smash mouth as opposed to a passing attack. That also appears to be our strength, with our O-Line size and apparent lack of agility. CMR is a goner.

The no-huddle usually works best when it comes when the other team does not expect it and you get them locked into a personnel package that is advantageous to whatever you are trying to do. How does that help to tell the team a week in advance that we are running the no huddle? They will be prepared for it and all it will do is tire out our undermanned o-line and keep our defense on the field the entire day. Because, I guarantee South Carolina is going to play a ball control-type game like they did last year and try to grind it out with Lattimore. With this strategy, we will be lucky to have 4 possessions in the 1st half.

Does anyone know Ga’s record against ranked teams over the past 3 years ? Does anyone know what the record is against the SEC east over the same 3 years ? Do you homer’s know that your last 2 games were against Central Florida and Boise State and you lost them both ? Yet some of you Homers are talking about winning the SEC this year ? Look it up the dumbest breed of dog is the English Bulldog ! You have the right mascot !

murfdawg,

Well depending on home many beers you have the term, “feeling better about my dawgs” is relative. That one could definetly do either way! :)

All kidding aside I agree with you 4 quarters to save the season and CMR tenure at UGA. This team starts 0-2 and we know how this will play out. That is why I do not want that to happen. I certainly do not wanna spend the remaining ten games with discussions like these. That is why I implore you guys to get fired up for this team this week.

When’s the last time you heard an announcer say that the Georgia offense (or defense for that matter) is difficult to play because they are unpredictable? Or that the other team was confused because we did something they hadn’t seen on film? Perhaps never. Though, you constantly hear that from our team about their opponents. I am hopeful that the Dawgs can do it, but I have zero confidence that it’ll get done.

Bobo is a good JV coach at best, if CMR really has a fire in his gut and wants to help himself he should go back to calling plays and setting the game plan, let’s earn some of those millions. Right now I am sad to say the Dawgs are becoming a team that teams play for homecoming games.

Hate to toss in the towel early, but if we do not show improvement this weekend we are in trouble. I at least thought that conditioning would have been improved – NOT.

One think I have noticed. None of our assistant coaches are sought after by other schools for positions or for head coaches. When was the last (first) time Bobo’s name was mentioned in a coaching search? If the rest of the industry is not trying to steal your people, then you must be weak.

And perhaps we need a few more 5th year seniors and not so many 5 star flashes.

That’s right coaches…go ahead and run the no-huddle in late afternoon heat. Your players were gassed in a climate-controlled dome at night. And fans… could you keep it a little quieter? The O-line can’t hear the snap count because you’re too loud. Unbelievable! Just when you thought UGA couldn’t be any more embarrassing…

Here’s my last Alzheimers memory of saving a season:
In 78, we were down 20-0 to GT and Eddie Lee Ivery. I told my wife I was putting down the beer, picking up the scotch and watch Eddie Lee run. Fortunately, the more scotch I drank the better the Dawgs played and we know how that turned out. My question is; How much scotch do I need to take into the game?

Running the no-huddle offense most of the game is the exact opposite of what they need to do. Ball control is how you when games in the SEC. As others have said, the no-huddle works best when it is used infrequently and you don’t know it’s coming. Announcing it to the world the week before is beyond stupid, besides the fact that we aren’t very good at executing it. I’m confident that Richt DOESN’T “know what the hell he’s doing” and the only thing he’s on the “cutting edge” of is getting his head cut off.
