Is Bobo shooting himself in the foot with shotgun?

Remember the old Marvin Gaye single “Stubborn Kind of Fellow”? Seems like it would make a good theme song for Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who says that in this week’s game against South Carolina the Dogs will stick with that new no-huddle offense that failed so spectacularly for most of the opener against Boise State.

Now, I understand Bobo’s reasoning in going to the no-huddle; he wanted to increase the number of offensive plays the Dogs get in a game to counter those quick-hit spread offenses like Auburn’s that Georgia increasingly is seeing. Of course, it didn’t work out that way Saturday against Boise, with the Broncos winding up with 11 more offensive plays than Georgia.

But Bobo and Mark Richt say it wasn’t the no-huddle itself that was the problem; it was poor execution.

No argument there. What I wonder about is whether sticking with the no-huddle also will mean staying with that shotgun spread alignment Georgia used extensively in the Georgia Dome. (An analysis by Dancing in the Endzone shows the Dogs were in the shotgun for 78 percent of their offensive plays against Boise State.)

Mixing in some shotgun with Georgia’s traditional I-formation play-action attack probably would be a good thing, but going primarily shotgun not only doesn’t seem to match Georgia’s personnel, it makes the shaky offensive line play even more of a liability — all six plays on which Aaron Murray was sacked Saturday were in the shotgun.

Why make it harder on your quarterback?

We always knew opening the season against a highly ranked Boise State team in the Georgia Dome was a gamble for the Georgia football program, but UGA considered it a gamble worth taking in order to get Richt’s program back in the national spotlight.

That didn’t exactly work out so well. While the Georgia-Boise telecast on ESPN did big numbers in the Atlanta TV market, dominating sports viewing with a 16.7 Nielsen rating (the percentage of TV households), nationally the game drew only a 2.3 overnight rating, which was down 12 percent from what Oregon State-TCU did in that time slot last year.

The game also lagged behind the LSU-Oregon game on ABC, which had a 4.7 overnight rating, up 68 percent from LSU-North Carolina last year. Georgia-Boise also didn’t do as well as Monday night’s Miami-Maryland game, which drew a 3.4 overnight.

At least that means more people saw Maryland’s ugly jerseys than Georgia’s.

Here’s something the Dogs have been needing to do for some time: There’ll be a Bulldog Bash fan rally at Sanford Stadium starting at 8 p.m. Friday, with Gates 2 and 10 opening at 7:30. Free red rally towels will be handed out to the first 2,000 fans in attendance. Seating will be available in Sections 109-113. The UGA cheerleaders and the Redcoat Band will be on hand, and this also will be the first chance for fans to get a look at the new video board.

Sounds like a good way to kick off a big Friday night in Athens.

What we need is a major scandal like SMU or FSU in the 90’s. Something to distract everybody from the fact we’re rebuilding this year. Richt can get it done, no doubt. This year’s team is too undisciplined and rowdy to play his complex and comprehensive gameplans.

Go dawgs!

You guys – Its not Richts fault about this loss at least. Hardly anyone beats Boise State, big or small. Its a state full of white people with nothing better to do than master the game of football. Not to be racist, but if you but a bunch of black people versus a bunch of white people in a war against eachother, who wins every time? History makes that answer obvious. Don’t f*** with tough ass westerners who know the game better than anyone

Someone, Please give Bobo a psych textbook& explain to him that repeating your actions and expecting a different result is the classic definition of insanity( or maybe just plain stupidity) .Whatever,as has been said by so many so many times before, He’s a really good QB’s coach, but he ain’t worth a tinker’s damn asOffensive Coordinator. Get them out Mr. McGarity before the program suffers the same debacle as last year.

“Is Bobo shooting himself in the foot with shotgun?”

Isn’t Mark Richt the highest ranking offensive coach on the staff? I can’t figure out why Bobo gets most of the blame for whatever ails Georgia’s offense. You have to assume that Bobo is doing Richt’s bidding.

Demote Bobo. Call the plays Richt. Call the plays. Florida St went to crap when you left. You are a great OC as was evident by your track record at FLA ST. Call the plays. Call the plays. We have went steadily downhill ever since Bobo became OC and CERTAINLY since he started calling the plays. 78% of the time in the shotgun? Really? Where is the play action? The play fakes that we seen from David Green? Bobo. The BIGGEST problem with the UGA football team. He must win this week or lose play calling at MINIMUM. I support Richt FULLY. Bobo has extremely low support left. One game. It better be AWESOME planning and calling BOBO. Or you should demote yourself or resign. You must be starting to feel guilty when you cash your huge paycheck.

Call the plays Richt. Take over the offense. I know its a lot to do on top of being the head coach, but you got to do what you have got to do.

Do NOT let Bobo lose your job for you. We dont want you to lose your job coach. You have given us the most cheers, top 10 rankings and championships and title games and even a shot at the NC but the B_S picked LSU. It had been 20 years since we won an SEC championship before you and you gave us 2 and 6 10 win seasons in 8 years. We dont want to lose you. 6 10 win seasons in 7 or 8 years is the best in UGA history. You got many more in you but Bobo does not capable of running the offense, game planning or play calling in the SEC, especially when blocking needs improvement. Shotgun? no passes to backs? not even as safety valves? You want Murray hurt for some reason? You want to lose? I am sure the answer is no.

You just are not competent Bobo. You are the energy vampire. THROW TO CROWELL YOU IGNORANT MAN! Playaction you blind man! 2 tighet ends blocking sometimes you stupid man.
Short game Bobo. Short game. Then when they creep up to stop it, go deeper. Sheesh. Whats the worst that happens? We avg 4 yards a play?!

Call the plays Richt. Call the plays! Please!

Bobo is shooting himself in the foot for being in a position he doesn’t belong. That’s another reason Richt needs to get on with full-time mission work.

Wow — the hostility and name-calling is amazing. It would be nice if people could stick to facts mixed with opinion without foaming at the mouth. It seems like our playbook was reduced to about 5 plays against Boise. Here’s a question: If Coach Bobo and Boise’s OC had switched places, who would have outscored the other? I hate to say that I believe Boise would not have put 35 on the board with Bobo calling the plays. When is the last time that OUR offense was the most cutting-edge, innovative offense on the field….??? When is the last time we shocked our opponent with a game plan that totally threw them off of their game??? When……?!

I want to see Coach Richt be our coach for many years, but I am tired of offensive game plans and situational play-calling that make little sense. Our weak O-line needs great play-calling to improve its chances. It can’t succeed with predictable nonsense that sets up 3rd & long. GO DAWGS!!!

I have an idea. Why don’t you make more yards per play, hince make more first downs. Seems like that would allow you to run more plays than your opponent by keeping their offense off the field and of course score more points. Isn’t that what good teams do..

So, just to make sure I have this right – according to you please sir ?

Kirby Smart, we all know does not run Nick Saban’s Defense, he does. Always has. Always will.

Your reply TNT ?

Mark Richt runs nothing at UGA.

Now, if I am making this too simple, please just tell me.

We need a coach who has coached and has been successful.

You want a guy who you said won a NC. I thought that was Nick Saban who won the NC at LSU and at Alabama.

Silly me.

Your reply ?

Mark Richt runs nothing at UGA. I don’t know. I sort of figured that it is obvious that Mark Richt is not Nick Saban.

How mamy players have dreds and tatoos on LSU, FLA, AUB, ALA, FLA ST…,Some of you guys are a trip with the racial undertones on a football blog, but I think the coaching staff needs to show composure and keep the players composed. Run the I formation in my opinon, use our size and get the ball to our play makers crowell, and mitchell and on defense play man to man and tackle to keep down the yards after the catch or run, just play good, smart, sound, football

This isn’t Oklahoma, this is Georgia. We don’t run a spread offense, where we run every single play out of the shotgun, which is what Bobo did in the first half. Our offense is best when we run the ball out of the ace/i formation, then use the play action pass to open up our receivers. Murray completed 70 percent of his balls on a play action pass last year. It’s ok to run quick pass plays out of the shotgun every few plays for a different look, but not every single time. This is the strategy Bobo used during our five game stretch last year where we scored 30 or more points every game. It looks like Bobo looked at that videotape and decided that we should do the opposite. If we don’t see adjustments next week, it’s gonna be a long year…

I hope we do something to keep Clowney out of our backfield. My recommendation would be to run a two tight end line-up with Arthur Lynch on Clowney’s side every play. Arthur is a physical freak and they say he is a very good blocker. His role would be nothing but blocking Clowney and let Charles catch a bunch of passes.

So, again, it’s not the coaches’ fault, it’s the players’ “execution”? Mark Richt has descended in the the netherworld of coach-speak. When he’s no longer willing to criticize his strategy, it’s time for Richt to go.

Someone please explain this thing on offense about going to the line getting set, then backing off and everyone looking to the sidelines. I have seen more delay of game penalties doing this and the quarterback should have the play when he goes up to the line. Call me old school football but we need the a combination of shot gun and no huddle, besides new coaching.

So Boo Boo is staying no huddle. If they don’t execute better the Defense will again be worn down in the 2nd half.

This offense is offensive. Georgia fans are you really going to continue your “we’re gonna run the table after USC” garbage? You have one of the easiest schedules this season and you will still have a losing record. Another year where you cant beat UF and UT in the same season.

September 8th, 2011
9:52 am

Bill – Sorry for being late to the party… What do you mean you understand going no-huddle to get more offensive plays (scoring opps vs stinky I suppose is the correct context)? You get more offensive plays only if you don’t go three-and-out on a routine basis and your D can actually stop the oppoonent. Otherwise the no-huddle is your enemy because it sends your tired D right back on the field. Bobo should worry about how to call a VARIETY of plays that utliize our strengths and do not play to the opponents strengths. For example – run your fast, massive FB out in front of the speedy RBs to negate the ineffectiveness of your O-line. Maybe even pull a guard and throw to that ex-TE now FB! Why is this so difficult?

I’m beginning to think Bobo is some kind of Manchurian Candidate. He was put in place to destroy our program from the inside. It’s all a dark conspiracy. Either that, or he’s retarded.

Bill -

What do you expect from Bobo. Here’s a guy who on first down throws the bomb and always follows that failed play with a run up the middle. You can set your watch to it.

When Monty Kiffen said it would take about 15 minutes to scheme against Bobo’s offense you knew we had a problem. We still have a problem and his name is Mike Bobo.
