Dogs fans looking for answers find only more question marks

Georgia's third-down choices against Boise State left many fans puzzled. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Georgia's third-down choices against Boise State left many fans puzzled. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

The views on Mark Richt’s team (and the UGA head coach’s future) varied widely at a family reunion and 70th birthday celebration for my uncle that I attended Sunday in Oglethorpe County.

Some were ready now to write fini to the Richt era; others took the tack I did in my postgame blog, that losing to the Top 5 team in the country in the first game doesn’t necessarily mean a doomed season.

But even the latter folks (me included) were disappointed with how little improvement the Dogs showed (with the offensive line, in fact, regressing) and how absolutely and shockingly clueless the Georgia offensive game plan proved to be.

Among the many questions raised: Could Todd Grantham not come up with any adjustments to increase pressure on Boise’s Kellen Moore? Did Richt and Mike Bobo really think going to a no-huddle shotgun offense that minimized use of the Dogs’ fullbacks for protection and put the blocking onus on the true freshman tailback was the best approach?

Also, where did Bobo get the apparently steadfast conviction that a run up the middle is the best way to follow an incomplete pass on first down? Does he really think a simple draw play was the best call on third-and-15? (The Georgia crowd’s boos made their thoughts on the subject clear.)

And then there was Bobo’s other approach to third-and long, keeping Aaron Murray standing there searching in vain for an open receiver downfield rather than throwing the kind of quick strikes Boise was using to pick apart the Georgia defense.

After chewing over these and other questions Sunday, one thing we all seemed to agree on was how important this coming Saturday’s game is, and that if the Dogs come out of the South Carolina game with an 0-2 record it might take nothing short of running the table to quiet the growing discord in the Bulldog Nation — and a win in Jacksonville will be a must in order to save Richt’s job.

Needless to say, in order to generate some smiles and laughter at the reunion we had to change the subject off Georgia football.

FROM SATURDAY’S NOTEBOOK: My initial objections to those Pro Combat jerseys was aesthetic, but the game proved them impractical, too. The black-on-red numbers were difficult to make out from the stands, and it didn’t help that Georgia’s jerseys didn’t have the players’ names on the back (unlike Boise’s). Burn ’em, I say. … I really hate those rugby-style punts Boise used most of the game. … Right before Brandon Boykin’s touchdown play, a sharp-eyed fan behind me said, “Wait a minute, we have a No. 2 on offense?” Too bad we didn’t see more of him on that side of the ball. … Finally, the much lauded new chapel bell UGA promotional film got played on the big screen at the Georgia Dome Saturday night, but the Redcoats played right over it. It was that kind of night.

Hey Carter DAwg and the rest of you GA Fans,

GA is ALWAYS OVER-RATED! Most of you, act as though you were suppose to win against Bosie, pleazzzzzzzzeeeeeee.

Count them, ZERO NC’s since 1980!

SC will kill you this weekend, it won’t be CLOSE!

Enough Said!

“Dawgs will upset south carolina! They are overrated.”

I thought that was Boisy?

Look it is going to be an uphill struggle against SC due to the match up. UGA offense does not match up with the SC defense well at all. And as for offensively well what do we say, UGA is going to start a 205 lb walk-on LB at MLB behind two out of shape NGs.

UGA got beat because they dont have the same advantages as Boise

Boise advantages are:

Boise recruiting ranks in the 60’s, UGA is ranked #2 the past decade
Boise has a small fanbase with a stadium that seats around 40,000/ UGA 92000 seat stadium
UGA ranks #2 in money. Boise ranks near 90 something
UGA has top facilities. Boise has high school facilities
UGA has 4 and 5 star recruits. Boise has 1 and 2 star recruits
The state of Georgia ranks in the top 5 in high school recruiting every year. Idaho ranks nowhere

No wonder Boise beat us

This has been glaring us right in the face

Can the school take the word GEORGIA off those uniforms and insert the word HEINZ instead? Good grief, the players looked like ketchup bottles running around the floor of the Georgia Dome.

Another roster of highly sought after recruits. Another game watching them look unprepared and confused. I went back and watched the replay Sunday night. How is it that being outweighed by 30-50 pounds the BSU lines were able to completely control us? When we blitzed it was picked up (key word there was WHEN).

It’s not just one game people. This has been the look of a UGA team for a while now. Confused, inept, unprepared, etc. and they do it with an average recruiting class ranked 8 over the past 5 years.

Maybe 3 more years of this crap will cause some of you to put the kool-aid down.

i was ready to feel better about the team until they botched the 4th and 1 in thr 4th quarter-simply no life to the offense-cannot leave the D on the field against a team like Boise or a team like USC

how many times last year did we see 3rd and long and then a sack

saw maybe 1 or 2 double teams on the nose

perhaps our splits are too tight on the line???? who knows but O-Line doesn’t move forward no matterhow loud B. Jones yells

CMR will not absolutely, positively take play calling away from BooBoo. He will never try to embarrass him publicly. He does not have ice in his veins. Being Mr. Cool and saving everyone’s face except your own will be his downfall. Not as a man, but as a football coach at a major D1 program. Remember, he knows what the hell he is doing…lol

The defense is not the problem and never was the problem. The problem is on offense. Period. The offense goes through TOO many 3 and outs willingly and racks up too many penalties. This forces the defense to play too any snaps and become even more vanilla in their scheme. This is why the Defense played that big doughnut hole zone, practically never blitz, and was gassed by the start of the second half. There is no running game and never has been one in 10 years. Yes, I said that. If a great player doesn’t break off a big run on his own, then he is toast in this finesse scheme. CMR is just like Paul Hewitt: He needs, no better yet requires, extraordinary talent in order to win. That way, there isn’t much “coaching up” involved. Contrast that with Saban or Meyer. They are 2 deep with great players at every position, but they are cut no slack whatsoever and are still “coached up.”

And yes, even their great players get slammed publicly if they do not perform. lol, Saban’s only problem is deciding between two very good QB’s. Everything else is in place. If it wasn’t, you would never know until Alabama actually loses to a team worthy of being on the same field as them. You people knew it was over when we were down to Alabama 31-0 at halftime, @ Athens, then two embarrassing blowouts and the revenge chomp stomp by Meyer. The way Petrino comes back to GA, and ou tcoaches our coaches (he’s a better coach anyway, despite how I personally feel).

Lets be honest, Ga wasn’t in the running for a national championship anyway.

Richt would much rather beat SC and could have been sandbaggin.

Thing is that Spurrier didn’t show much against ECU either.

Plus, Spurrier likely has a much deeper playbook than Richt & Co.

I am disappointed bc we look like the same team as last yr. I wonder why we hired a s&C coach that use to do video for the team. At this level we need someone with a degree in kinesiology and probably a masters degree and a CSCS at the least with experience. These guys come in to the program strong and fast and to improve on that it takes an intelligent strength coach. You have to know the science behind the lifts and the muscles. What you do with normal people wontt work on these kids who have been lifting hard and doing conditioning hard since they were14. We cramped in the second quarter at least three players and no Boise players cramped. We looked exhausted toward the end of the first. All i heard all summer was how hard every workout was and it soundsand looked like their bodies may have plateued. You cant completely exhaust your body every workout in fact some of the best strength coaches and speed coaches want their athletes leaving wanting more that way the body completely heals b/t each workout. Conditioning is different but the same concept is applied. You have to do hard days and light days which are active recovery days where you are working but recovery at the same time the intensity is a little lower. Thats my soap box S&C is still in shambles i promise yall. We also had no discipline on the field. Boise did everything on the hop from warm ups to getting on and off the field breaking the huddle not us we get three penalties on the first four plays then 12 men after half. No adjustments were made at half that worked. Our line got manhandled we played with a high pad level and you can tell who had the better strength program when a 280 center is moving a 330 NT off the ball like he is working the sled. Size of the body does not matter in football it is the size of the heart in the body.

If we do get a new coach. I want Dan Mullen he is proving he can coach in a tough place to coach. He can get it done look at Florida’s offense when he left Tebow’s senior yr. Fl returned everyone yet after Mullen left everything decreased on the offensive side yds, td, pts per game, receiving yards all offensive stats went down with Tebow and the whole O

Did you see what Mullen did at MSU last year. He is coaching his players up. THat is what we need. THis GA job is not as sought after as this fanbase thinks it is. If it was why did we get our fifth choice at D coordinator. THere is things behind the scenes in Athens that coaches are not going to deal with. I promise you that. You get Kirby in here like everyone wants and you are taking a huge chance bc Saban is a control freak and we dont know how much of that Defense is Saban and how much of it is Kirby.

To Low Country and Flat Tire; When referring to being Traders to Bulldawg Nation, are we to assume that you two are rival import/exporters? And what, pray tell, does international trade have to do with our incompetent coaching staff? Their lack of preparation would lend me to think that they are all traitors. What do you two international magnates think?

David Granger

Bill, you certainly make a good point that losing to a top 5 team is nothing to be ashemd of. Boise State is a good team that is well-coached, despite all the punk talk I heard about them leading up to the game. (When did my fellow Dawg fans start acting like that damn FSU scum? That bothers me about as much as how poorly the team has been playing lately.)

But this was it for me. I am ready for Coach Richt to go. It would be one thing if we had played well, and just got beaten. But Georgia was NOT ready to play (three penalties on our very first posession), we continue to make the same mistakes we’ve made over the last two or three years. We hit an 80-yard sweep early…and never run wide again? We threw long passes on first down…which is NOT a bad thing. But then we’d run off-tackle most of the time of third and long…which IS a bad thing. (And more of that “let’s try not to LOSE” crap.) Just same old, same old…

This hurts me to admit, but I hope that Georgia loses most of our remaining games. I’m afraid that…because of our sheer talent…we might pop up and upset a couple of good teams, and that might be just enough for the administration to think “Well, maybe Coach Richt has the team at least pointing in the right direction…he deserves one more year.” Which is exactly what they’ve been saying too long now.

We need new blood at the top. Coach Richt is a good man…clean-cut…says the right things and represents the university well. And he’s a good recruiter, which is probably the single most important asset for a coach. (Especially one in a talent-rich state like Georgia.) He does a good job at building a team, but just can’t take the team he’s built and use it to its best advantage. (To borrow a comparison from history, he’s like General McClellan. Did a great job building the Army of the Potomac…just couldn’t use it worth a damn.)

Thank you for what you’ve done at Georgia, Coach…and good luck elsewhere.

It does matter

I don’t think it was a problem with the defense. It was a total ineptness by the offense. It’s tough on your defense when the offense goes three and out and hits one big play on offense the whole first half. Kudos to Boise’s coaches, They had to know that our defense was about gassed from it and decided to come out after halftime with the no huddle to finish them off. That’s what you call adjustments which our coaching staff doesn’t seem to be able to make.

Looked for a couple of gaps to comments this morning, but good lerdy. A blog comes out and its 8 pages in 3 hours. Its not about football at this point.

I’ll check back later. Not interested in a bunch of trolls or folks looking to blame thier miserable lives on somebody else.

I wasn’t one of the idiots talking about how terrible BSU was, so I didn’t have to trash anyone to make myself feel better. Some do, I understand that.

FWIW, looking forward to each and every game left to play. As I said last week, Boise would be favored over our entire schedule, and would do quite well. We wouldn’t have to play much better to still have a very improved year. That’s the goal, improve over last year, get back in the division race, Still sure of it happening.
