Georgia's third-down choices against Boise State left many fans puzzled. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Georgia's third-down choices against Boise State left many fans puzzled. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

The views on Mark Richt’s team (and the UGA head coach’s future) varied widely at a family reunion and 70th birthday celebration for my uncle that I attended Sunday in Oglethorpe County.

Some were ready now to write fini to the Richt era; others took the tack I did in my postgame blog, that losing to the Top 5 team in the country in the first game doesn’t necessarily mean a doomed season.

But even the latter folks (me included) were disappointed with how little improvement the Dogs showed (with the offensive line, in fact, regressing) and how absolutely and shockingly clueless the Georgia offensive game plan proved to be.

Among the many questions raised: Could Todd Grantham not come up with any adjustments to increase pressure on Boise’s Kellen Moore? Did Richt and Mike Bobo really think going to a no-huddle shotgun offense that minimized use of the Dogs’ fullbacks for protection and put the blocking onus on the true freshman tailback was the best approach?

Also, where did Bobo get the apparently steadfast conviction that a run up the middle is the best way to follow an incomplete pass on first down? Does he really think a simple draw play was the best call on third-and-15? (The Georgia crowd’s boos made their thoughts on the subject clear.)

And then there was Bobo’s other approach to third-and long, keeping Aaron Murray standing there searching in vain for an open receiver downfield rather than throwing the kind of quick strikes Boise was using to pick apart the Georgia defense.

After chewing over these and other questions Sunday, one thing we all seemed to agree on was how important this coming Saturday’s game is, and that if the Dogs come out of the South Carolina game with an 0-2 record it might take nothing short of running the table to quiet the growing discord in the Bulldog Nation — and a win in Jacksonville will be a must in order to save Richt’s job.

Needless to say, in order to generate some smiles and laughter at the reunion we had to change the subject off Georgia football.

FROM SATURDAY’S NOTEBOOK: My initial objections to those Pro Combat jerseys was aesthetic, but the game proved them impractical, too. The black-on-red numbers were difficult to make out from the stands, and it didn’t help that Georgia’s jerseys didn’t have the players’ names on the back (unlike Boise’s). Burn ’em, I say. … I really hate those rugby-style punts Boise used most of the game. … Right before Brandon Boykin’s touchdown play, a sharp-eyed fan behind me said, “Wait a minute, we have a No. 2 on offense?” Too bad we didn’t see more of him on that side of the ball. … Finally, the much lauded new chapel bell UGA promotional film got played on the big screen at the Georgia Dome Saturday night, but the Redcoats played right over it. It was that kind of night.

Georgia fans should spend less time obsessing over Tech’s stadium, and more on the sorry state of the UGA team.

Realistically, how long will the Ga fans, boosters, supporters put up with this? Does Richt get the whole season? Or should we cut cord now, go ahead and take our lumps now but get the players ready for their Junior and Senior seasons under a new coaching scheme?

Carolina will beat us by at least 14. They will put at least 30 on our defense (spurrier will study the Boise game films, he will expose our weaknesses). They will leave Stanford stadium in control of the East.

The defense was sucking wind by halftime ? Why not go out and find some more 350 pound blubbertubs to put on the defensive line ?

One last thing…. about the article out here on twitter…..

1st…its not the players fault, the blame lies squarely on the COACHES shoulders.
2nd… for the players, quit the twitter, put your noses in the playbook, focus on your jobs and execution
3rd…. quit sending challenges to the other teams on game week… let your play speak for itself…

uga coaches probably watched the game film of the Nevada game. Nevada spread the field and ran up the middle.

what they missed is that Byron Hout, who you all love to tease, stuffs the run as good as any linebacker in the country and Billy win and Chase Baker are very good in the middle when the have a linebacker that has to be accounted for.

Boise played very clean not many flags.. and other than the first uga drive uga was okay. First games are tough though. Things always happen that will be cleaned up. Dont worry atleast your team will get better and the rest of the country will act like Boise State does not hold practices for the rest of the year. I wonder how many weeks it will be before you all utter the phrase that BSU peaked?

It’s a shame these great players have to be coached by these imbicles. Grantham doesn’t have a clue on how to adjust his defense and Bobo is well…lost. The players don’t deserve this

Richter must go right away. He does NOT have the skills set we need to have UGA win a lot of football games. The boys need more than playing skills; a lot of them need basic LIFE skills. They’re not getting that at UGA; hence the arrests for DUI, armed robbery, kidnapping, etc…..Yes, they are partly responsible. If they are going to give free rides to illiterate minorities just to play football, then they have an obligation to ensure their new “protege” makes sound decisions at least at a base level! Murder? WRONG! ARMED ROBBERY? WRONG!!!Perhaps drug dealing? No? WRONG!!!
The mindset at the upper levels must be changed; that’ll eventually trickle down to where it belongs; Head Coach Richter.

Stop complaining about the uniforms! They needed to be wearing THONGS the way they played! Shut up talking, tighten your chinstrap up another couple notches and go headhunting. The blame isn’t anywhere but in the mirror UGA Players! I hope you read these post, maybe it’ll light a fire in your can and you will go make us DAWG Fans proud again! O line get NASTY, AND Defense get off blocks, cover your man, and 11 hats to the ball! It’s an easy answer. Block and tackle!!

CMR was out coached bruh. The penalties, lack of discipline, lack of conditioning ( calling a time out to rest the defense) during Boise State hurry up offense. Throwing the ball on first and ten and running the power I on second and ten. Who does that? Bobo should know by now that his offense is the most predictable in the SEC. I was thinking that the freshman dream team would come out and run all over Boise State but that obviously didn’t happen. One thing for sure bruh the video game designer that consulted on the atrocious power ranger uniforms is laughing all the way to the bank. CMR has flatlined, we need a fresh coach to match our kids talent.

Practice yesterday was halted just after it started. There is no indoor practice facility for such a day. Not that Georgia tek has one either, with part of a football field under a Quanset Hut. Christian Robinson and the other Bulldogs, such as Brandon Boykin should have long-since, all of them, had their privledges revoked to post comments on to Twitter. Facebook. Any other Internet or Cell Phone texts. Imagine sending a dare post from an UGA football player to the head coach of the team you are playing a few days later, when said coach has 2 Bear Bryant Top Collegiate Coach in America Awards, daring him to kick the ball to the UGA player, by the UGA player, himself in open view of everyone – and directly to the cell phone of their said head coach – a guy many would like to see here making the 3 and a half million total compensation Mark Richt doesn’t earn with his “coaching staff.”

Between full time school and football, why would these kids got any time at all for Tweetering?

CMR knew they wasnt gonna win against them blue devils so he threw away the BSU game so as to save every tool in the shed and SHOCK the chickens next week! They will be stunned hanging upside down and then their heads come off when they see all the improvements CMR kept in reserve!

Play Carolina tough ( we don’t have the lines, offense or coach’s to win) some heat will subside. Get hammered, all bets are off as to what happens. Beating a few poor teams this year will not help Richt.
You gotta win the ones that really count and people care about. Gonna be interesting.

Buckeye,

Until you can show that your university can even come close to NCAA compliance, I would not come onto another teams blog, and put them down. Last week two more of your compliant athletes were suspended or was it three, for accepting illegal benfits. Fix your own home before you critisize somebody elses. Your coach is not a lot better off than ours becuase he can’t even insure his players are compliant with simple rules about accepting gifts and money after tatoogate, no less.

The dawgs had their chance to beat the Gators, but what do they do—get beat by our punter in spite of the “choke sign” by your classy DC.

The dawgs will be in complete disarray by the time they get to Jax. Even one of your own Davis Pollick was impressed with Gators under Muschamp. After opening win he said the Gators looked awfully good but didn’t know if they could beat LSU or Bama. But he knew they could beat Auburn and Georgia.

When ya’ll leave the Carolina game in the 3rd quarter, you will have time to get home and watch a well-coached team under Muschamp. These are not the same Gators you should have beat last year.
On second thought, don’t watch the game because you will be more upset than when you got home to see a fast, physical and well coached team. This is the type of team you had hoped for, but as usual, Richt turned the “dream” team into a night mare.

I’ve lost all hope in Bobo. I’ve also lost 95% of my hope in Richt to do what needs to be done: Demote Bobo back to QB coach & hire a REAL Offensive coordinator. I will give Richt credit for going out & hiring a new D-cord year before last (even if his hand was forced) although it doesn’t appear that his hire was that good of one — but at least he took a chance. However, keeping Bobo as O-cord & promoting a video guy to strength & conditioning for a top-5 program is mindboggling. UGA is one of the most profitable programs in the country — there should be nothing but top-notch coaches & trainers in the program, so anything less is un-acceptable. Can’t believe RIcht had every opportunity to get things on the right track & chose not to do what was needed — getting mad just thinking about it!!!
