Georgia's third-down choices against Boise State left many fans puzzled. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Georgia's third-down choices against Boise State left many fans puzzled. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

The views on Mark Richt’s team (and the UGA head coach’s future) varied widely at a family reunion and 70th birthday celebration for my uncle that I attended Sunday in Oglethorpe County.

Some were ready now to write fini to the Richt era; others took the tack I did in my postgame blog, that losing to the Top 5 team in the country in the first game doesn’t necessarily mean a doomed season.

But even the latter folks (me included) were disappointed with how little improvement the Dogs showed (with the offensive line, in fact, regressing) and how absolutely and shockingly clueless the Georgia offensive game plan proved to be.

Among the many questions raised: Could Todd Grantham not come up with any adjustments to increase pressure on Boise’s Kellen Moore? Did Richt and Mike Bobo really think going to a no-huddle shotgun offense that minimized use of the Dogs’ fullbacks for protection and put the blocking onus on the true freshman tailback was the best approach?

Also, where did Bobo get the apparently steadfast conviction that a run up the middle is the best way to follow an incomplete pass on first down? Does he really think a simple draw play was the best call on third-and-15? (The Georgia crowd’s boos made their thoughts on the subject clear.)

And then there was Bobo’s other approach to third-and long, keeping Aaron Murray standing there searching in vain for an open receiver downfield rather than throwing the kind of quick strikes Boise was using to pick apart the Georgia defense.

After chewing over these and other questions Sunday, one thing we all seemed to agree on was how important this coming Saturday’s game is, and that if the Dogs come out of the South Carolina game with an 0-2 record it might take nothing short of running the table to quiet the growing discord in the Bulldog Nation — and a win in Jacksonville will be a must in order to save Richt’s job.

Needless to say, in order to generate some smiles and laughter at the reunion we had to change the subject off Georgia football.

FROM SATURDAY’S NOTEBOOK: My initial objections to those Pro Combat jerseys was aesthetic, but the game proved them impractical, too. The black-on-red numbers were difficult to make out from the stands, and it didn’t help that Georgia’s jerseys didn’t have the players’ names on the back (unlike Boise’s). Burn ’em, I say. … I really hate those rugby-style punts Boise used most of the game. … Right before Brandon Boykin’s touchdown play, a sharp-eyed fan behind me said, “Wait a minute, we have a No. 2 on offense?” Too bad we didn’t see more of him on that side of the ball. … Finally, the much lauded new chapel bell UGA promotional film got played on the big screen at the Georgia Dome Saturday night, but the Redcoats played right over it. It was that kind of night.

BigRedandBlack,
Thank you so much for making this blog so humorous. The humor comes from the utter absurdity of what you seem to think will transpire this season.
Write it down, son. Your team will not make a return to the dome this December. You’ll be lucky to have enough wins to even go to a bowl.
Maybe next year can be your year. You can be (presumed) Nat’l Champ until next September when the season actually begins.
In the meantime, thanks for the entertainment you provide.

mcgarity needs to open the vault and offer gruden whatever he wants to take the job, even if it costs $5 million per season plus a boatload of benefits. He will be worth it. make the call.

AND ANYONE ELSE

I welcome anyone and I say anyone to come on here at the end of NEXT YEAR and say I was wrong and I was an idiot

I really want Richt to succeed

All last week I really thought that this coaching staff had gotten the message of your on the hotseat

But after sitting in the stands watching the same crap play calling that we have seen for years with nothing different I do not see this staff making it through this year.

My suggestion for Richt is he better take over the play calling or here is a better idea. Bobo needs to call Eric Zeir during the game and ask him what to call because if anyone listens to the radio. Zeir knows what plays should be called

DawgVoiceof Reason,

Sorry, the trolls got to me. You are right. I am finished. I hate the word done and I used it. Like a teacher once said to me, done what? Done cooking?

Anyway, LakeDawg….lastly…Yes Goff should have been fired.

“We will win the East and go to a great bowl game because we are the most storyed program in college football history.” Are you serious, Bigredandblackdawg? It’s great to be a fan; it’s great to want your team to win, but what in the world have you been reading about/watching/listening to/attending all these years? It surely isn’t college football, as UGA is simply not in the same class as at least 12-15 other programs. Root for your team, but stop drinking the red and black Kool-Aid.

Well, here we go again! Has anything changed in Athens? The Dawgs will never win another national championship unless there is a change at the top. We will always pull for the Bulldogs but it is frustrating when nothing seems to change.

1 GAME! Once game boys and you act like a bunch of little girls stood up on Prom. Hope you conduct yourself s better in the real world when it really matters. 1 GAME and you have thrown in the towel. Imagine that
———————————————————————————————————————————————-

More like 40 games and counting. This last game after an 8 month rededication to turning it around. Its not the loss. Its the total lack of improvement or any hint that there will be improvement. What makes you think anything is going to change? Its not about the losses, its about the underacheivement. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Dawgs go 9-3 this year against this schedule, but I would bet that CMR will never challenge for an SEC title. At UGA, with its resources, that is unacceptable.

I predicted Boise 34 -uga 17 this week sc 42-uga 13 and did any of you see miss st they are very well coached down field blocks awsome they will stomp our butts big time, unless we have made a coaching change by then, I know Coach Lamb works in the athletic dept,i’d bring him and dan pitts out of retirement to finish out the season! now that would be fun

IMHO, this team needs to finish 8-4 in order to keep this staff intact, including the HC. If not, hopefully McGarity will pull the plug in early December and not anytime later. Or better yet, have CMR resign early, effective at the end of the season if this team is .500 at the midpoint. Hopefully it won’t come to that, but it looks like the trend right now. UGA has held on to CMR one season too long.

We love the Dawgs but after watcing the many different plays Boise had in store for us and the same old plays from our offense I have to believe that Coach Richt needs to get involved with the offense once again. What happen to quick pitches, screens to the tailback that Thomas Brown worked so well. What happend to any passes to tailbacks out of the backfield, any screen that would slow down the Boise rush? If our players ran Boise’s plays we win by 20.

Jim Donnan went 10-2, 9-3, 8-4 and 8-4 his last 4 seasons. And got fired!!

Richt has gone 10-3, 8-5, 6-7 and ??(probably 4-8 or 5-7) for this year.

If you fire Donnan for having winning seasons, have do you KEEP Richt for having losing seasons?? McGarity has to get rid of this clown at the end of this season.

Dan Mullen has turned Miss State into a very respectable program. Just think what he could do with all the talent that Richt has.

It’s time to end this nightmare in Athens and get our program back to where it should be.

@Flat Tire on I-95 in Jacksonville…He has the right to his opinion, but I get sick and tired of the “no change” crowd acting like the rest of us are rubes and not true fans, because we disagree with them. Especially when its as obvious as it is now that a change is in order. Back in the day, there were several Goff apologists, also.

The highest paid state employee in practically every state in the USA is the head football coach at the most prestigious football factory. And that’s the case in Georgia where Mark Richt is being paid $ 3 million by the athletic association and he’s got those commercials for those dump trucks and rugs. You are paying for Paris Hilton and getting Snookie. If all you want is a 500 record you can get it for less money. Does Vince Dooley have any unemployed sons?

Sad to see the Dawg Nation fighting amongst themselves. I’m glad Meyer stepped aside before it came to this. A following will only be loyal as long as the leader is winning or showing improvement. Alas, Richt has doesn’t either for several years.

Butch Davis has too much baggage, I agree. I really think Dan Mullen would be a great fit. Even Kirby Smart would be worth looking at. He doesn’t have any head coaching experience but he’s been in Nick Saban’s system for several years now. He has probably learned how things work at Alabama and would apply those same methods. Richt’s system simply doesn’t work anymore.

If Chris Peterson would not come, which I think he just might if you throw the right money at him because he loses almost that entire team this year.

Mike Leach would be my second pick. He has shown at KY and Texas Tech that he can move an offense. He would have to find a good D coordinator.

Im not sold on Kirby Smart.

I would go after Meyer as well

I personally like Richt. I really wanted him to succeed this year. But after 3 years of diminishing returns and a huge wake up call in the Liberty Bowl, he says he realizes that he has to shake things up and dedicates himself and the team to that purpose right after the Liberty Bowl (paraphrasing his words). Then in the Dome, I see NOTHING has changed. After each of the past 3 years, he says that he realizes that the Dawgs have under-performed and he’s going to correct it. Yet we see NO change. At some point, you have to realize there will be NO change. Sorry, I’m just repeating what most of us already know.

Phil

September 5th, 2011

Well at least Kirby would be passionate about the job because he WANTS to be here. And he would show that on the sideline. Richt looks like he would rather be anywhere BUT here.

Leach is too much of a loose cannon, although he is a good caoch. Better than Richt and Bozo, that’s for sure.

Meyer, who knows about him. Does he really want to coach or not. But he would be better than Richt, that’s for sure.
