Georgia's third-down choices against Boise State left many fans puzzled. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Georgia's third-down choices against Boise State left many fans puzzled. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

The views on Mark Richt’s team (and the UGA head coach’s future) varied widely at a family reunion and 70th birthday celebration for my uncle that I attended Sunday in Oglethorpe County.

Some were ready now to write fini to the Richt era; others took the tack I did in my postgame blog, that losing to the Top 5 team in the country in the first game doesn’t necessarily mean a doomed season.

But even the latter folks (me included) were disappointed with how little improvement the Dogs showed (with the offensive line, in fact, regressing) and how absolutely and shockingly clueless the Georgia offensive game plan proved to be.

Among the many questions raised: Could Todd Grantham not come up with any adjustments to increase pressure on Boise’s Kellen Moore? Did Richt and Mike Bobo really think going to a no-huddle shotgun offense that minimized use of the Dogs’ fullbacks for protection and put the blocking onus on the true freshman tailback was the best approach?

Also, where did Bobo get the apparently steadfast conviction that a run up the middle is the best way to follow an incomplete pass on first down? Does he really think a simple draw play was the best call on third-and-15? (The Georgia crowd’s boos made their thoughts on the subject clear.)

And then there was Bobo’s other approach to third-and long, keeping Aaron Murray standing there searching in vain for an open receiver downfield rather than throwing the kind of quick strikes Boise was using to pick apart the Georgia defense.

After chewing over these and other questions Sunday, one thing we all seemed to agree on was how important this coming Saturday’s game is, and that if the Dogs come out of the South Carolina game with an 0-2 record it might take nothing short of running the table to quiet the growing discord in the Bulldog Nation — and a win in Jacksonville will be a must in order to save Richt’s job.

Needless to say, in order to generate some smiles and laughter at the reunion we had to change the subject off Georgia football.

FROM SATURDAY’S NOTEBOOK: My initial objections to those Pro Combat jerseys was aesthetic, but the game proved them impractical, too. The black-on-red numbers were difficult to make out from the stands, and it didn’t help that Georgia’s jerseys didn’t have the players’ names on the back (unlike Boise’s). Burn ’em, I say. … I really hate those rugby-style punts Boise used most of the game. … Right before Brandon Boykin’s touchdown play, a sharp-eyed fan behind me said, “Wait a minute, we have a No. 2 on offense?” Too bad we didn’t see more of him on that side of the ball. … Finally, the much lauded new chapel bell UGA promotional film got played on the big screen at the Georgia Dome Saturday night, but the Redcoats played right over it. It was that kind of night.

I dont think your getting it. The fans would have accepted a loss if they saw a better prepared team. And espescially a different play calling scheme. Absolutley nothing original and no adjusments

Thats what people are mad about and dumbfounded about

Flat Tire,

How does it feel to be a poser and a trader to Bulldawg Nation? Called you out trashing fellow Dawgs on Chips blog. Called you out earlier in the day with another dose of humble pie. You need to make a choice on whether or not you wanna follow this team. I promise you the AJC will not miss you on this sight if you are so distraught over the performance. You are the perfect example of a Chicken Little Fan. Go support those Gators that you secretly follow. Make sure you take that yellow off your back as I am sure Gator Nation doesn’t even appreciate those types of fans.

Todd Grantham had the defense dialed in for the first 5 or so series. When we blitzed and got pressure, Boise threw a pick. After that, we couldn’t keep the offense on the field long enough for the defense to catch their breath before they were putting on their helmets and going back out on the field after a pathetic 3 and out. For Richt to save his job, we all know what needs to happen, 9 and 4 or better with that 9 and 4 record including a win in Gainesville. Will that happen with Bobo calling the plays? I’d bet a paycheck tomorrow that it won’t.

UGA fans…The main problem with the state of UGA’s football team is plainly obvious….it’s that you, the fans, always buy into the hype during the offseason.

I have heard over and over about how much the defense had improved over last year. Where did that information come from? Was it just stated so many time that you believed it? Just because some of the defensive players had “another year of the 3-4 under their belt” doesn’t automatically make them better players…or better tacklers…or better coverage backs. The defense looked just as inept in the Boise St. game as it did most of last year.

The same can be said of the offensive line. Did you really think that a couple of months of practice with a new O-line coach would turn a below average unit into bull-dozers? Most wouldn’t….but somehow UGA fans just KNEW that it would.

Along the same lines, you UGA fans had CONVINCED yourself that Isiah Crowell was going to, from game one, dominate opposing defenses. I truly believe that he will be a very good running back in the SEC…but come on, he is a true freshman.

I know that this post makes me sound like a complete UGA hater…and I am not. However, UGA fans really need to be more realistic in their expectations, and quit building up the team into something that it isn’t every summer. Face it, UGA is like most of the other teams in the SEC…that is, an above average team that will compete for an SEC title every 3rd or 4th year. No shame there.

No Durham, no AJ, no Ealey, no King……

Nothing new? Nothing original?

Did you want them to come out with Mouse Davis running the ” Run and Shoot”? When new the coaches going into this. This is the same staff, just 100% essentially different skill position players. It is the fanbase who is at fault for DREAMING a season in which a team coming off a 6-7 record beats a Top 5 team. If you think just because we are Georgia a team lines up and folds then thats again a you problem. Scholraship reduction has changed the landscape of football along with all the games on TV. Talent is abudant.

Low country, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect to be able to compete with a team from Idaho with inferior talent. UF, Bama, LSU, even SC fans would have the same expectations. I refuse to accept that UGA, with it’s recruiting base, and facilities second to none, should not be able to compete with anyone.

Please use your influence to convince Adams and McGarity to hire Chris Peterson for next season. He is the best choice to bring UGA back into national relevance, and we should do whatever it takes to bring him here, Go Dogs!

We are playing in the sec,and we got BoBo that can’t figure out how to RUN for one yard.We came out flat and out of shape(so much for that preseason hogwash)had no real game plan and that goes straight to the top.It does not matter how much heart or effort our players play with when they are under prepared and under coached by a staff that is paid a great deal to do so.It is time to let Richt go be a missionary, let Bobo go and populate the earth and admit the Grantham experiment has a horrible failure and let him go back to being a mediocre NFL coach.Should have done it after last season but had to give Richt one more shot after past successes but it is time to start looking to the future and give up on this season.

Tampa,

They may have lacked in talent in several positions, but the had the one player who touched the ball 100% of time on offense who made the difference, Kellen Moore. He needs no defense, we all know his resume. What on Georgia’s resume makes us think we are entitled to win that game outisde of us saying we are Georgia? We play in the SEC? Well, truth is we were 6-7 last year and CMR new that he needed to revamp Athens and he did by kicking players out and bringing in better calibur kids as well as athletes. Again I am no a Richt apologist, but I am also not surprised that we lost. Again 9-3 was my thought. It could change but I thought loses to UT, UF and split the BSU/USCe game. I certainly could still be wrong but after 1 game I am not gonna jump on the CHICKEN LITTLE side.

You are such a troll. As much as talent has to do with anyhting it boils done to schedule, injurys, luck and other myriads of things. Point to coaching as that is the easiest to blame. Every team that has won the MNC has caught breaks along the way. We can have revisionist history all you like, but we are talking about right here…right now. You either support the team or you dont. 1 GAME! You are the worst! ONE FRIGGIN GAME! We where 6-7 last year! You are the fool for believing 100% we would be a team in the top 5 w/ a Heisman Trophy candidate. Thats on YOU, not them. I am done…have fun the rest of the evening yellow bellying it with the rest of the lot.

How about CTG teach the D to wrap up and tackle. I think you see better tackling at a pop warner game. Lattimore will probably rush for 250 yards with tackling like that. BOOBO must have spent off season with June Jones with that run and gun offense. We are power I team. O and D line got their butts kicked like last years bowl game. The only kid that came to play was Boykin rest of the team stunk it up. I like CMR, but to be honest only coach i am keeping is Latos. Friend and graner guess all they did this summer was eat at the Varsity cause i sure as hell can’t believe they practiced with them not after watching that crap!

I used to think that after last year, if UGA fired Richt, they would have a hard time hiring someone legit and successful to come in and take the job because we just fired someone legit and successful. I don’t feel that way any more. The Dawgs need new leadership….And will get a good coach. It IS broke!

Furthermore, I am a realist. Every player who has a scholarship on our roster was wanted by D1 schools everywhere, specifically the SEC. SEC schools only heavily recruit players who they think can play SEC football. Same goes for the Big Ten coaches. And the former Big 12 coaches. Rankings mean nothing, especially early in the season. Who has money on Boise beating LSU, FLORIDA, ALABAMA, MISS ST., or S. CAROLINA right now? Talent is not the problem. Lowcountry is right, the players change, but the coaching remains the same. However, with that being said, 9-3 is unreasonable, even after one game. The team started the way it finished last year and the one before that and the one before that. Of course Boise St. beat UGA. The game film they watched over the past 10 years showed the coaches have not changed a darn thing. Grantham uses the same doughnut zone Martinez and BVG used, despite having a much more aggressive scheme. We have a DC who is more experienced with pro players, who only need to be told their assignments, not be taught how to tackle or stay low or jam receivers at the line. We have a secondary coach from the Northeast. An entrenched at the hip DL coach. Another NFL lifer at LB coach. An OL coach from UAB of all places. A running back coach who was a reciever and a WR coach who was a RB. And finally, another entrenched at the hip, no incentive to improve, adjust, or change OC where the only playbook he has read or learned from as a coach is from the HC. It’s all crossed up.

I think I’ve read about all I need to read about how bad we were and I agree. Time to change the subject a little bit. For those that were at the Dome, any ideas on why they couldn’t (or wouldn’t) show replays on most of the big plays in the game? It was terrible. If that is part of the deal with games played at the Dome, I don’t ever want to watch another game there again. I’ve gotten used to seeing replays at games and its not a luxury, it’s mandatory!
