‘How are the Dogs gonna do?’

Mark Richt's seat will be slightly less warm after this season. (Associated Press)

I’ve been getting the question all summer, seemingly everywhere I go. In the elevator at work. In restaurants. At a funeral.

“How are the Dogs gonna do? How many wins do you think they’ll have?”

So now it’s time to make that annual venture out on the limb and share with you what I’ve been telling those folks, though I first must remind you that my record as a seer is mixed.

Most years since I’ve been doing this blog I’ve been fairly conservative in my predictions, with the Dogs even bettering my forecast a couple of times. And then there’ve been a couple of seasons like last year, when I predicted a 10-2 regular season and Georgia winning the SEC East. That didn’t go so well.

Of course, I wasn’t alone. In a poll we did here last year, only 18 percent of you thought Georgia would have less than nine wins and 44 percent expected at least 10 wins.

I’m not going quite that far this year. I think Mark Richt’s team will do well enough to turn the heat down a notch under his seat and, depending on how many times South Carolina and Florida mess up, they might still be in contention for the SEC East late in the season.

But 10 wins in the regular season? Can’t quite see that.

I think Todd Grantham’s defense will be much improved this year, though I’ll feel much better the first time I see Kwame Geathers or John “Motel 6″ Jenkins stuff a big-time running back. I’m excited about the linebackers and I feel a whole lot more confident about the secondary than I did back before spring practice.

But the offense has a lot of question marks and is very thin at key positions. As my son put it, “the O-line is a scooter accident away from disaster.” The Dogs also are ridiculously shy of depth and experience at running back, and while the talent looks promising at receiver, a step down in production there sort of has to be expected with the departure of A.J. Green and Kris Durham. Plus, of course, the Dogs still have hot-and-cold Mike Bobo calling the plays.

So I’m expecting Georgia to wind up 9-3.

Here’s why: I see the Dogs splitting those tough first two games. No, I wouldn’t be shocked if they won them both or lost them both, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. Then comes a stretch of five games where Georgia ought to be the favorite every week. However, the pessimist in me sees them losing one game they shouldn’t this season and it’ll probably be in Knoxville. Finally, I think Georgia likely will lose to either Florida or Auburn, but not both. Again, at this point it looks like the Dogs ought to be favored in both of those games but Jacksonville is still Jacksonville, and Auburn-Georgia is always tough.

I’ll admit I flirted with 10-2 again while reading about how his teammates all say Isaiah Crowell is the real deal. But I also gave serious consideration to 8-4 as I watched Georgia’s depth get downright precarious at several positions over the past few months.

How satisfying would a 9-3 season be? Well, a win over either Boise State or South Carolina would look awfully good. And if one of those nine victories is over the Gators, I don’t think there’d be too much reason for grumbling, even if Georgia doesn’t make it to the SEC championship.

Anyway, that’s what I’ve been telling all the folks who ask me how the Dogs are going to do. Feel free to join me out on that limb with your own season predictions.

If you look at last year, you were not off as much as you think from your 10 win season. I believe they can get 11 wins, but do they have the resolve. Are they winners? Some teams just find a way to win. Are these guys of that making?

It’s common knowledge and an unquestioned fact that UGA head football coach Mark Richt has brought shame on the state of Georgia and made an embarrassing laughingstock of the state’s largest university. Even the most avid UGA fans understand this even when they won’t acknowledge it, bless their hearts. :-)

The most embarrassing thing is the win-at-any-price mentality of Richt, which has effectively made UGA a football factory, with cheating, recruiting of low-intelligence jerks who barely graduated from high school, and tolerating immoral and unethical activities by both players and coaches. Even with all this, he still can’t win.

Richt is a product of the lawless environments of the University of Miami and Florida State University, where he learned well how to conduct himself in the most tawdry way, while pretending to the world to be a saint. Make no mistake – Richt is in coaching purely for the millions of dollars that have been wasted on him, and the millions more he will add until someone in Athens has the integrity and intestinal fortitude to run him out of town.

A truly shameful situation, especially since all Georgians, including UGA alumni and fans, have to live under this shadow of infamy.

Most likely 9-3 with losses to South Carolina, (talented QB, receiver and RB and well coached) Tenn. (the Dawgs tend to choke in Knoxville), and Florida (a lot of talent has been stockpiled in Gainesville and the Dawgs always choke in Jacksonville). However, if the Dawgs get past Boise and USC all bets are off and the SEC East will be well within reach.

Using that as a basis, Saban lost four 1st rd picks, finished 4th in the SEC West. How could anyone think they could be a top five calibur team. The retort? Well they have Saban, they have won a MNC. To contend for a chanpionship, any team must good talent that fit the system, reasonable depth, and a favorable schedule. I think you must acknowledge that our current talent is average for what we do, depth is non-existent, but the schedule is favorable, especially if we can win at least one of the first two. So, with only one of the three requirements in place, a 10-2 season is possible but more likely a dream. I do believe the quality will be improved, but we still have a way to go to be a contender. I love my Dawgs, and I think CMR will get us there, but this is not the year. I expect 8-4 with losses to Boise, SC, Tenn, and FL.

Note not a single damn blogger can judge this current level of talent in Athens. To call it average is pure speculation as we have new RB’s,WR. LB,NG and other various positions. So how has anyone seen enough to justify it as average? Now give it five games and we sit at 3-2 or 2-3 then you have a point perhaps, but damn give the guys a shot at earning some bones before you prejudge them.

Nobody knows that now, but one thing I’m sure IS certain, we’ll have a better idea about that after the first two games.

And one thing’s for certain, this 2011 team is certainly more focused, more knowlegeable about their position responsibilities, and IS NOT the same team that UGA suited up the past two years.

OK, I’ll go out on a limb and say we take the NC this year. I am an optimist, but here is what I like. First, don’t let polls and pundits get you down, AU was about the same spot in last year’s preseason poll that we are! Means nothing. The D is better by everyone’s estimation. The players seem much more optimistic than anybody else, but the coaches definitely are more upbeat, too. I say we show marked improvement. Our line should be much better, which would have helped last year’s D, but I think our LBs are better as a whole, too, as well as our secondary. I think we are at least better, and maybe superb; time will tell. Our O should be much better this year. I believe we will have a good running game again. We really haven’t scared opponents with our running game in quite some time. I love TK’s perfect name for Samuel and Crowell–thunder and lightning! Not only that, but Malcome is a great back if he can get healthy. Thomas and Harton are a great change of pace and hard to track down. Thomas was our top producer at times–remember Ark? We are much better at TB, and CMR has confirmed that–we do have hold on to the ball!! I also think CMB has grown a lot as a play caller in the last couple of years. Murray will be much better, and I think our receivers/TEs will be great. Special teams are very, very strong. Boykin and Smith, I think, may well go down as our best returning tandem ever! Finally, the attitude is much better; we have way less distractions and problems. Potential problems with my thesis: if the Oline can’t block or we have injuries there. We do have some youth that I think will be very strong, but we will have to see. Any huge injuries or distractions could cause problems. We are a young team, so it is important to get out on the right foot. Lord willing, I think this is a team of destiny, but heads up–I am an optimist. Go Dawgs

Bill, get ready for some new bumper stickers! I know that you have to remember all of the stickers that emerged in 1980 after it had become obvious that UGA was not going down, no matter what. Besides all of the Super Dawg stickers about Hershel, there was one that read: Hershel by land, Rex by toe, Buck by air will surely get us there! We can replace these names with Isaiah, Blair, and Aaron this year. I don’t mind going out on a limb because I truly believe that the Dawgs have a real chance this year. Can anyone doubt that UGA does not at least have as much chance at it all as Auburn did last year? I have news for you, the years leading up to last year for the weagles sucked just as bad if not worse than Georgia’s last few years. I am aware of the fact that most of these people who either were not born, or were too young to remember the early 80’s just do not really get what UGA football is all about, and the Stafford years are the best they have ever seen from UGA. Here is what is different with UGA team now. Stafford, A.J. Green, Knowshon Moreno, Justin Houston. These were me,me,me players. Aaron Murray and his supporting cast have formed a TEAM attitude that UGA has not seen in years, maybe even since Ray Goff was coach. Now I know that Goff had plenty of shortcomings, but he had at his disposal a heck of a lot of “Damn Good Dawgs”, who wanted nothing but the best for Georgia, even if they came up short on their goals. Now that being said, Richt did have that same player sentiment when he came to Georgia in players such as David Greene, David Pollack, Boss Bailey, and many more. This translated into being the best team in college football in 2002, and would have beaten Miami or Ohio State if they had been given the chance that year. I do not know if the Dawgs can make all the way without a single loss this year, but 11-1 is sure not out of the question. Now with the media being down on the Dawgs as they are, even if UGA were to win the SEC Championship, a loss may well keep them out of the BCS Championship, but who knows. Maybe we get the right bounce and get all twelve wins regular season, along with some new bumper stickers!

You make a key point — Coach Bobo calling the plays. UNLESS he has grown during the off-season, and studied his own tendencies, we will probably lose at least 1-2 winnable games due to Bobo’s predictability and inconsistency. Due to lack of O-line depth and having to rely on so many new playmakers, we may have a lot of very close games. If our playcalling is inspired and clever, it will improve our chances. But, those 2 adjectives can NOT be used to describe our playcalling and in-game adjustments over the past few years with Bobo calling the plays.

Our best hope is that the defense improves so dramatically, especially in the 4th quarter, that it will cover up Bobo’s choices of plays in key situations. It’s not always just about “execution”, if the play being called is an idiotic one, given the situation in the game. GO DAWGS!!!!

Lets face reality, with the level of talent this team could really have a legitimate shot at running the table and winning the SEC. HOWEVER, as everyone knows, this team has not played a complete game as a complete unit in a long time. When is the last time that the offense, defense, and special teams had a great day on the same day? It seems as of late that when the offense has a good game, the defense is sleeping, or the defense will have a good day while the offense forgets to show up (Look at (UCF). To me, that is the fault of the head coach. It is his job to ensure that the rest of the coaches have the players ready to play both mentally and physically. It is also his duty to address the issue of Bobo’s play calling being so predictable.

On a brighter note, The one thing that the program has not had in the last 2 years is a returning starting quarterback. They had Joe Cox trying to replace Stafford and then last year a redshirt freshman in Murray. This year they have a returning QB and when you look at CMR’s record when his Starting QB returns, it is 13-1 (2002), 11-3 (2003), 10-2 (2004), 10-3 (2005), 11-2 (2007), 10-3 (2008). But look at the other 4, 8-4 (2001 David Greene a Freshman starting QB), 9-4 in 2006 Matthew Staffords freshman year, 2009 Joe Cox senior but first year starting, and last year 6-7 starting a redshirt freshman. This trend does give me a positive outlook on this season.

Bill, my own red and black crystal ball this year is murkier than it’s ever been. I just have no good idea. That said, based on available evidence, 8-4 is my best wild guess. I agree with everything you said re: where those losses will come, except that I think we can write off UF and we’ll lose 2 games we shouldn’t (not 1), probably some combination of Miss St, UT, AU and UK, at least one of which will drill us bad. The little guy in the back of my head says “listennn to meeee, we’re gonna beat BSU and UF, listennnn to meeee” and my Momma always said to listen to that fella; but while he might be right re: BSU, there’s no statistical reason to believe we’ll beat UF regardless of who the coaches or players are. If we do finish 9-3 and beat BSU and UF, I’ll be duly chastened for forgetting Mom’s wisdom! Oh, and SC upsets Bama in the Dome, then lays an egg in a bowl while 2 non-SEC teams play for the MNC. And I reserve the right to give an utterly different response to the next person who asks!

How UGA does this season will depend in large measure on whether Spurrier can continue to make progress in improving his South Carolina team and on how quickly Will Muschamp and Charlie Weis can rebuild Florida. Tennessee, Kentucky and Vanderbilt will be non-factors in the Eastern Division race, except to the extent one of them manages to upset Florida, Georgia or South Carolina.

This is the year for one of the three contenders to step up—-if they can. It’s just as conceivable that there could be a 3-way divisional tie with a 6-2 or 5-3 SEC record. It’s going to be an interesting season, and a real test of Muschamp, Richt and Spurrier’s coaching skills. Given the recruiting disparity, however, I would still say the future beyond 2011 is Florida’s.

Our program right now is a question mark. That could be a good or a bad thing. The last couple of years its been bad. But this year who knows? The 2010 team was better than the 2009 team in every way except the final record. Losing AJ Green for those key match-ups vs. South Carolina, Arkansas, and MSU took the wind out of our sails. Mathematically, the team knew they were out of contention for any title race, so their confidence was shot and they lost another game to a horrible Colorado team. But once AJ was in the lineup and the offense was able to gel, they put on a string of pretty dominant football. Yeah Yeah… they didn’t beat anyone with a winning record, but they took Florida into overtime and the Auburn game was a lot closer than the final score indicated. This makes me think we would have won at least one of those games SEC games we lost earlier in the season had we had AJ the entire time.

Now as an alum, do I like the fact that this program is a question mark for the 3rd year in a row? No.
Do I like the fact that we’re the kind of program that tanks it if ONE key player is out of the lineup? No.
Do I think we’re even remotely close to where Alabama is as a program or even where WE were as a program 6 years ago? No.

However: do I think the Dawgs can win 9 to 10 games with a shot at the SEC title this year? Given our schedule, and the fact that other programs in the SEC EAST are also down; YES. But 7-5 or 6-6 is also a possibility given our inexperience… and if that happens then Richt will be gone and we’ll find someone else who can win with the talent we have. So we’ll see I suppose…

IMO, Bobo does tend to strongly follow his own tendencies, but I think the last couple of years have taught him a lot. He has manufactured a lot of points without a running game, so assuming we have a strong running game, he will really shine. He will just need to avoid falling into his, I’m ahead by two TD pattern. UGA wins 10 or 11 if they beat BSU..8 if they do not. The story will be in the trenches against BSU. UGA outweighs them between 20-50 lbs. across both lines. Watch the first two BSU possessions for an indicator of how the game will go. If UGA shuts them down in convincing fashion with swarming and overwhelming speed and physical play, then game over. I see a GA team with new blood that wants to return to the national spotlight. This is the perfect game to state the case. Even though the squad will depend upon younger players, these guys coming from winning programs and are accustomed to high levels of success. They will not be intimidated by the moment. We should be pessimistic that the lights were turned on after two rough campaigns the last two years, but then again, what did UGA have when it was at its best under Richt’s early years? It had strong leadership at QB with David Greene and reliability despite only average offensive performance. (With Aaron Murray, we’ve got more talent and potential for the same leadership). It had an aggressive, awesome defense under Van Gorder (Grantham has the pedigree and aggressive spirit). Assuming the defense takes flight this year, how can a team with a strong defense and a leader like Aaron Murray not be able to compete for the SEC championship? Injuries might be a concern, but let’s at least wonder what the real ceiling is for this team if things go right. There is a talent base at UGA conducive to winning – including against the much ballyhooed SEC West.

When Georgia has a formidable team it usually plays up to it’s competition. I personally think that it is best that teams like SC and MS have teams that are better than they usually are, for one thing, if they don’t lose before Georgia plays them them then they are ranked higher, which helps the Dawgs cause if they are successful against them. Same with Tennesee. Georgia needs the Vols to be successful in their early going so that if they can get a win in Knoxville that it will mean something in the polls. Personally, I don’t think that the Dawgs could ask for a better situation. They got a break with the Coach’s Poll coming out ranked even though they had a losing season last year. They play two top ten teams to start, so as to be in a position to climb the poll ladder early providing they beat these teams. Also, people may not remember, but when SC had George Rogers they were at that time considered to have their “Best team ever” back then as well. Guess what, the Dawgs prevailed.

Effort, energy, and discipline. That’s what I am looking for first. The talent is there, although thin at positions, as it has been pointed out. I think our defense will be quantum leaps better than last year from an understanding perspective, even though we lost some talent there as well.

This Georgia team should be able to play a “ball control” offense. Work the clock, quick hitters in the passing game, and a running game that should be sufficient for now. Murray should be able to manage the game. Our special teams can pin people deep if we use the “coffin corner”. Touchdowns before field goals, but we can hit the long one if needed.

Georgia’s defense will actually be the key to this season. Stuffing the run, blitzing from all directions, knowing assignments, playing under control. If the “D” can get teams off the field, I think we can beat others by wearing them down and forcing long drives. Turnovers are always an issue. We have to create many and give up few.

I like this team. Bobo has a lot to prove. If the talent isn’t there, he must be patient and creative. If the talent is there, he cannot call 3 and 11 draw plays.

9 – 3 with a chance to blow through that mark with a 2 – 0 start. Here’s hoping.

Bill, what is it with you and Bobo? Did he run over your dog or something? Or perhaps one of the guys you ask opinions of before you ‘go out on a limb’ with your comments tells you anybody from ‘below the gnat-line’ doesn’t know from shinola?

Face it, the one question mark that we need to have answered in the affirmative is ‘Is the defense as good as we think/hope/predict it will be? I mean a defense that can end up being talked about in the same breath as Alabama’s. If it is then I like our chances to be just as good as ‘Lady Luck’ will allow us to be, cause we’ll be ‘in’ every game – much as we were last year, by the way – and with our ’special team’ play and a quarterback that has shown he’s more than capable, I like our chances – a lot.

Hey ‘rayban’…be sure never to allow a ‘real’ Bulldog fan to know who you really are, cause you’ll be wearin’ those ‘raybans’ where the sun don’t shine…and ‘2004′, you ain’t even ‘dry behind the ears’ yet, so there’s no way you know ‘from shinola’ either.

If we win the first two games – and I certainly believe we can – then who’s to say we can’t ‘win ‘em all’? Why the hell not…who’s gonna be tougher than them? Sure, like too many, so-called, Dawg fans posting here, if you go into the season with low expectations you won’t be as disappointed – plus you can keep on blaming Richt – but I figure that I can deal with whatever disappointment comes my way, so why not ‘expect the best’ and be rewarded for it…it’s so much more fun than being ‘pleasantly surprised’.

I expect an undefeated season this year. How’s that? The only game UGA should be an underdog, is in the SEC Championship. I can rationalize losing that one, but every game leading up to that one, UGA should win. That doesn’t mean they will, which will probably lead to me throwing a nutty a few times this year. Underachievement seems to be the standard in recent years.

My heart says UGA wins at least 10 but my gut feels 8-4 may be more realistic. The decline of the past several seasons w/the talent they had leaves too many question marks on how this season will turn out. UGA’s performance in the first two games will tell whether this years version of CMR’s team will erase all doubts of seasons past or confirm our worst fears that UGA cannot be a winner w/the current coaching staff, especially if they stumble againt MSU, FL or TN.

The Dawgs have to win to keep the ghosts of seasons past from haunting us all over again.

If Coach Richt can instill the one game at a time attitude in this team like he did in his most successful seasons in Athens then the sky is the limit for this team. I truly believe that every new player on the field for UGA will be an upgrade. Yes A.J. was talented, but he was a “me” player. UGA will have plenty of success in it’s passing game without him, wait and see.

On the D side of the ball, I do believe that the swarming will return that has been sorely missed since Van Gorder left.

DD, the thing with people and Bobo is his inability to provide a consistent offense, even with 1st-round NFL talent.

When Bubba and Cletus can sit on the sofa and predict at 90% what play Bobo is going to call, you can bet your a** that SEC defensive coordinators can, as well. Relying on the defense to cover for predictable playcalling isn’t going to work in the SEC. 6-7 wasn’t a fluke, it was Bobo coming into his own as OC. I think we drop the first 2 and go on to a 7-5 season with losses to Bama, Auburn and UT. I think we will beat UF this year, since with 5 other losses the win won’t mean anything except for the once-a-decade opportunity to beat our chests.

Win or lose I think the Boise State game helps us. It may be a coincidence, but it is interesting that both Oregon and Virginia Tech lost their opener to Boise State and went on to win their conference championship. Boise State plays football the way it should be played… they have a swarming defense that flies to the ball on every play and an offense that really knows how to mix it up and keep teams off balance. Win or lose, I hope the Georgia players learn something from these 2 star recruits about heart and effort that will help us througout the rest of the season.

Damn how many running backs does the average college team have? 20? We’re not lacking depth there. All SEC teams have at least 2 backs that can get it done. So do we. Samuel is an experienced back who has only gotten bigger, only gotten faster and is more knowledgeable than he was 2 seasons ago. Crowell will shock a lot of people with what he’s able to do. I think Malcome can play a role. Maybe get a few runs here and there. We have backs, experienced? Not quite, but we have bodies. So therefore depth shouldn’t be the question. Experience, yes.

And another thing I don’t get is why people question our WR corp. We have tons of depth at the WR position believe it or not. King, Brown, Wooten, Troupe, Mitchell, Bennett, Seay, Conley, etc. Not to mention our TEs with Charles, White, and Lynch. We have plenty of guys that can catch the ball and move the chains. That’s all it takes. Just move the chains. We’re fine at WR and TE.

As far as the O-line, those guys are tired of all the talk about how bad they are. They’re great football players with great technique. Our starting 5 can be one of the best in the SEC. It’s the bodies behind them. Question the depth of the O-line, not the starting 5 we have now. They can get it done, and they will get it done this season. We have two All-SEC performers with Jones and Glenn, two potential All-SEC talents with Gates and Burnette, and we have a solid road grader and mauler in Justin Anderson. We’re fine people.

Here’s my 8-Point Bobo Test, to see if he’s going to be better this year:
1. Murray throws incomplete on 1st down. 75% of the time, if the next play is a draw for 2 yards or less, Bobo’s the same.
2. If it’s 3rd & 12, and Georgia runs more than 2-3 draw plays all season, nothing has changed.
3. If Georgia is ahead by 14, and the offense shrinks into a turtle shell, we still have no killer instinct on offense.
4. If a certain aspect of the Georgia offense is unstoppable, do we continue emphasizing it until stopped, or does Coach Bobo stop it on his own? (ex: Tech last year, Kentucky in 2009)
5. Does Orson Charles average no more than 2 touches per game again, and the other TEs 1 touch per game combined? If so, nothing has changed.
6. Now that Carlton Thomas is only the SECOND-smallest back on the team (Harton is smaller), how many times is Thomas/Harton sent up the middle to be decapitated for a 1 yard gain, at best?
7. How many innovative wrinkles do we add to our offense this year? (when switched back to TB, Samuel said “no problem – nothing has changed.”) Will there be some no-huddle? Will Brandon Smith or Boykin or Nick Marshall be used creatively when put on offense, or just stuck in that stupidly named “Wild Dawg” formation, just to run the ball in a purely predictable fashion?
8. In an obvious long-yard passing situation, does he have Murray using play-action fakes that simply delay the QB getting into the pocket and having time to view his options downfield?

Coach Bobo doesn’t have to change in all 8 aspects, but if he doesn’t adjust in at least a couple of these areas, it could be another frustrating season. It’s not about average points per game, it’s about scoring enough in each game to win, whatever that number of points may be. GO DAWGS!

As usual, poor playcalling and poor game management could shatter our season. However, if we wound up in the top 20 in rush offense and with a top ten total defense, we could go unbeaten this season…..but the problem with that scenario is that Mark Richt hasn’t had a top 20 rush offense since he became the hc. If he expect to go unscathed in the sec its important for him to have a good rush offense because it’s very difficult to pass against a sec defense.

AUB, ALA, FL and LSU all had a top 20 rush offense when they won the NC.

I disagree with Richt and think that this first game COULD decide the whole season. If the Dawgs come out and lay an egg against BSU, then the team could fold up and lose any optimism it had coming into the year. It will definitely fire up the firericht crowd for sure. I hope that doesn’t happen and I dn’t think it will, but I also didn’t think that Bama would be up 31-0 in the first half against us in 2008. We are far more likely to get blown out than to blow them out. Past history proves it (and not just that 08 Bama game).

However, if we can dominate this game and create some positive momentum going into the SC game and beyond, then I think the sky’s the limit. That’s why I think this first game is so important.

We’re much better equipped to shut Lattimore down this season rather than last season. We have two behemoths at NG both weighing 340-350. We have faster linebackers, etc. We are experienced in the 3-4 now, we are playing in Athens and with a win against Boise will have all the confidence in the world to start 2-0. We can shut Lattimore down, will we? That remains to be seen. But I bet he won’t have the display he had against us last season. I will say that.

UGA simply cannot continue to perform like we have vs Colorado or MSU or GT in 08 or vs Florida last year or UCF. No way can this lack of effort continue. We alumni are about 88% on the same page with this assessment and feeling.

UGA is in the corner. MR needs to turn this program around this year and come out and make two statements in a row vs SC and BS.

If he does not win 9, or preferably 10, with one win over Florida and compete to the very, bitter end for the East title, then we need a new coach.

IF UGA does make the Dome with say 9 losses, lose to LSU or Alabama, then we go to the Cap One Bowl, that is minimally where we need to be for him to be in good stead with a fine shot at winning 10 games. Period, End of story.

Let’s just get the games on and see how they go. Predictions may make for blog hits but have little value other than that right now. Nobody, incliuding a lot of the journalist, whose job it is to write these sort of articles has a good idea of how this season will go. Heart is not a measurable statistic.
All of us, haters and fans of UGA alike have any idea what UGA is capable of right now, when all is said and done. We all have wishes and opinions but opinions are like butt holes. Everybody has got one. Some just use theirs to speak out of a little too much on these blogs though.
I don’t even see an original comment coming on these blogs anymore for the most part. Everything has been rehashed so much, we can even figure out what others are going to say before we read it.
I know what I wish for in UGA so I am just going to stick with it, and hope I am right. Others will wish for UGA to not even win one game and still others will wish that the HC and OC are gone and fail miserably this season.
Let’s just see how it all plays out.

All the “experts”, all the trolls, and all the haters and people that don’t want Georgia to win are basing their predictions of how UGA will do this season SOLELY on what happened last season. Our of the 7 losses, 4 could have gone either way. That makes a big difference. Nobody blew us out. Nobody. Even Auburn didn’t blow us out. If our defense makes a few stops then we have a chance to win. But no excuses. It is what it is. What I’m saying is, don’t underestimate the power of attitude. Our attitude has changed. Boise State is a good team, no doubt about it but according to the media, and everyone else enticed in the game thinks that Georgia doesn’t stand a chance and I just can’t wrap my mind around their logic. How do we not stand a chance? We have the athletes, we have the home crowd behind us, we have the best special teams unit in the country, 2nd year in the 3-4 defense with better personnel, 2nd year under Murray’s belt, new S & C program, better attitude, running game will be better, etc, etc. People say Georgia won’t win. My intention from the beginning was to be here a long time. So I’m not really shocked. “Bottom line is I’m a born-again leader in Jesus Christ. No matter what happens on earth, it’s nothing compared with forever. That gives me peace to go about my day and life. But God also wants us to live our lives abundantly, not to just wait until we get to heaven to enjoy it. He gives us His word. There is no better guide to parenting, discipline, marriages, work, to money management – everything is in there. To have that type of guide from almighty God, it just gives you some peace that you are moving in the right direction and doing things that hopefully will be pleasing to Him. And the rest of the stuff, people can do or say what they want to say.”

How have things changed at Georgia in the past year?

“Biggest change: We went through an expansion of our football facility. Last year we were living out of trailer and it was really dysfunctional. It was not easy. … Now that this thing is finished and I’m sitting in my office, looking at our practice facilities and weight room, indoor area, new meeting rooms, the strength room, the whole thing is awesome. I really do feel like a brand-new head coach even though it is year 11. Some of it is because of the newness of the facility and some of it is because our new A.D., Greg McGarity, has come to me many times asking me what we need to do to help Georgia football have success. That has revived me in a lot of ways. I’m energized right now and feeling great.”

Bob thinks Richt’s era is over! LOL. It’s just beginning at UGA so PLEASE TO ALL THE HATERS, GO ROOT FOR ANOTHER SCHOOL, ANYBODY WHILE WE REAL UGA FANS ENJOY THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY IN THE NEXT 3 YEARS.

You enjoyed watching UGA on ESPN when UGA had 10 or more wins 6 times in 8 years under Richt didnt you? Than NEVER happened in UGA history I do not believe. Richt’s record is FAR above any in UGA hostory ESPECIALLY WHEN FIRST BECOMMING A COACH AND HE DONE IT IN THE MODERN ERA IN THE SEC! YOU IGNORANT LOW IQ PEOPLE. So wnjoy UGA with Mark Richt for the next 15 years why dont you? Remember when Mark Richt was on the hot seat cuz he had ONE losing season then he led them to 7 10 win season in a row and to the national championship game 2 times and coached UGA for 15 more years and won 5 more SEC titles? You will 16 years from now.

Richt is NOT going anywhere in THIS decade except to SEC Championship games. Bank on it. SO all you haters will be just hatin life for 15 more years! Best record by far for a head coach in first 10 years in DIV 1 history except for Paterno…better than Bryant, Dooley, Bowden Saban, and ALL of them. Saban was close but not as good, especially in 10 win plus seasons. Look it up. You are trashing and wanting one of the best coaches at this point in his career as any and better than most. NONE won a NC in first 20 years so why are you all crying? None were in position to win one really and Richt had us there but BCS picked LSU when we ROMPED Hawaii.

Give Richt a break he DESERVES it because HE EARNED IT. LOOK THROUGH COLLEGE COACHING HISTORY IN FIRST 10 YEARS….Look it up haters. LOOK IT UP instead of running your traps. Nobody wins NC in forst 10 years and NONE win 10 plus games 6 times in first 10 years as being a head coach except RICHT AND PATERNO. You will see it in black white and color but you will still be ignorant and keep hating cuz you are HARDHEADED AND CLOSED MINDED.

Last 2 years were down. GET OVER IT OK? 2009 was expected. So was 2010 just not to that extent. To those that persevere and make it through, they come out stronger for it. Some did not make it thorugh the last 2 years, some did. Richt did. Look for a better coach that is now ready to take the team up a level the next 3 years in Richt.

ALL COACHES GO THOUGH IT. ALL OF THEM! TEXAS WAS 5-7 LAST YEAR! ALL LOSE SOME YEARS! Paterno wass dow nfor a few years last decade but he has them playing good again. Some teams just dont get the job done. GET OVER IT! How old are you people 12? 16? 22? I know you are not over 35 because hopefully by the time you reach that age, like most of us, we have maturity and wisdom to a much higher degree and that brings understanding and patience. Knowledge. Wisdom.

I have been watching UGA since the 1970’s and Richt is the best thing to happen to UGA besides Herschel Walker in 50 years! Dooley wasnt all that, Herschel made him what he is today. He won 1 SEC title and tied for another without Herschel. Herschel led him to 3 others. He might have had one other one in the early 60’s but I do not think so.

Richt has much more potential also than Dooley EVER had. You younguns better be ECSTATIC to have MARK RICHT. I can tell you what it was like for the 50 years before he left FLA. ST. and came here. Remember just a couple years ago when schools were trying to lure Richt away from us? Yeah who would we have now? Dooley jr? Nobody else out there but cheaters besides Stoops, maybe Saban, Brown, Miles. None are coming to UGA so who is going to coach? Another assistant getting his first shot? I dont think so.

UGA is in the VERY BEST POSTION POSSIBLE UNLESS SABAN TOOK OVER AND THATS NOT HAPPENING. I will take Richt over EVERYBODY ELSE and Saban will be retiring soon so I will STILL TAKE RICHT! You should too….

Talent-wise I think this team stacks up evenly with UF and slightly behind SC, the schedule is manageable but the way they have performed in crunch time the last 3 years would be disturbing if I were a diehard Dawg like most on here. I root for UGA (and go to home games with my wife) except in Jax and what I saw from Richt against UCF gives me doubts whether he still has the fire to win in this tough conference. If it were talent I would say 11-1 and losing against SC but with what has gone on there in recent years, I predict 8-4 with losses to SC, MS St, UF and Auburn. Dogs are going to punish Boise. The Broncos will score on a trick play maybe, and it would not surprise me to see a missed blocking assignment in our backfield cause a fumble that is returned for a touchdown. Other than that, Murray will nickel and dime them to death passing, and Crowell is going to bust a big touchdown run or two late. Those guys will be physically out of the game midway by the 3rd quarter IF our Dawgs have improved their S&C. We win by 10.
USC, on the other hand is going to put a hurting on us. Our only chance with them is to shutdown Lattimore early and make Spurrier put the game on that drunk QB’s shoulders. I don’t think we can shut him down. We lose by 14.

UGA will go 17-0 with a 45-0 win against the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLVI.

How you ask, well UGA listened to the delusions of UGA fans on this forum and decided that they were just too good for the mere NCAA and have decided to move on to the NFL.

They have also agreed that they will only play their starters for only a half to make it fair for the other poor NFL teams.

Really, I suspect a 7-5 team, as just like last year UGA lets their first loss beat them in the following game which sends the season into a tail spin. There are simply too many questions which this version of the team has to find an answer. Some answers will be found but not enough to get this fragile team to the type of success which UGA are demanding.

Let first let you know I have nothing against his faith in Christ. His faith has nothing to do with it. Vince Lombardi, Steve Walsh, Joe Gibbs, Tony Dungy, and Tom Landry were Christians and amassed over a decade worth of NFL championships.

So dont dare lump me into that category.

No one remembers 10 win season winners of any year.

They remember champions. National Champions and Conference Champions.

I have yet see a team fly a flag saying they won 10 games. But I do see teams fly a flag that shows the conference championships and NC’s that they have won

Please tell me what Richt has done to garner such praise for an extension of his contract. Other than win 2 conference championships that I might add were lucky to play in due to FL losing out those years there’s not much to add.

What 10 win seasons who cares

Georgia will beat Boise, This after all is the SEC and the Dogs are a lot better than they were last year, The D will be much improved with a lot of added talent, A lot stronger up the middle, But of course it all depends on injuries, Abit thin on offense where injuries could prove to be the difference, South Carolina will be a toss up, A battle of the tailbacks will determine the game. Auburn will not be near as good as last year and will lose to Ga, This should be our year to beat Fla, So I think we should win 10, If we stay healthy.

Ban the Raybans hasn’t quite figured out that there is a high probability that his own school allegiance, whoever that may be, is most likely worse. He knows NOTHING about Mark Richt. Most school presidents would consider themselves lucky to have someone with that level of integrity. How clueless can old Raybans be? A football factory? Look at UGAs grad rates versus, say, oh someone like Boise State. Ban the Raybans should be ban from his computer if that level of incompetence is going to come out of him.

I’m so tired of hearing how this season will determine the fate of CMR. I’ll let you in on a secret…. he will be around for many more years. He is a GREAT coach and an excellent mentor. Aaron Murray has already posted better numbers than Matthew Stafford ever did.

Murray posted a better efficiency rating, better total offensive production, tied him for TD passes in a season, and threw for just a few yards less than Stafford did a junior.

All as a freshman.

Matthew Stafford became the #1 overall pick because of his physical size, arm strength and developmental potential. Plus, he had a high football IQ. But he was surrounded by tons of NFL talent on his pit stop here in Athens, and he never led his teams to any kind of championship. Like it or not, Stafford didn’t have the heart of champion and only used Richt and his pro-style offense as a springboard to the NFL. He never led UGA to greatness.

Aaron Murray will.

If Richt falls to 2-9 against Florida, for God’s sake fire the man. Unless conceding an annual loss to UF is ok with this program. As a Georgian who spent many years in Central Florida purgatory, that’s my idea of football hell.

OK, the religious themes are a little over the top, but there are some Georgia fans living in South Georgia and Florida who know exactly what I’m talking about.

And here all along I thought Mark Richt was the head coach.

Great gig Richt has – get paid millions, get credit for your wins, and none of the blame (from many fans anyway) for your losses.

I say that the realistic outcome for the Dawgs will be 8-4 with losses to Boise, SC, MSU and TN. I have a hunch that we will beat UF. I predict that the team will be firing on all cylinders coming into that game and will also benefit greatly from the bye. I think that ‘12 will be the year that the Dawgs make their way back to the SECCG and into the top 10. Though I would gladly take the latter for this season rather than go 10-4. UGAfan

There is a very large problematic issue with UGA’s play-calling: UGA doesn’t give the fullback the ball often enough to keep the linebackers honest. Every third series would help. Statistically, when a team is able to cast aside such a looming worry as the fullback blasting his way through the line of scrimmage, it offers them more opportunity to discount him as a ballcarrier…..which can only help the defense. Throwing the fullback an occasional screen is not good enough. The more the defense has to be on the “lookout” for everything, the more hesitant they are to commit to certain sets. Not having to count on the fullback getting the ball removes the doubt from the defense. Doubt is an “offensive treasure”. If the defense has to do more “doubting’, they are less likely to be as consistent making defensive plays. Coach Richt and Coach Bobo should definitely consider utilizing the fullback more on dive plays. Not doing so makes our offense far more predictable which is what you don’t want to be. It’s a statistical reality that if you run a certain play with regularity, the other teams will be looking for it. If they are blitzing with certain looks, it’s time to call a “fullback audible” at the line of scrimmage to keep them honest……and of course …the fullback is gong to be a lot happier being involved in both screen passes and dive plays audiblized at the line of scrimmage.
As it stands, as a linebacker can be pretty confident that UGA isn’t going to give the fullback the football, except at the goal line and on screen plays. Changing this would be “enormously helpful”

32-18 UGA, like Pulpwood said Boise State bwaaahhhh. How in bloody blazes is a team who only plays 10 games vs the # 81 team according to Rivals this season and then TCU and UGA, going to bring their 2.41 recruits to the Georgia Dome us with our 3.58 players and be used to winning, therefore are 3 points favorites, designed to maximize the betting and nothing more ? # 69 average recruiting class according to Scout.com all the last 5 years including this year # 57 while we are # 6 this year and # 11 these last 5 years. 51 either 5-Star or 4-Star to Boise State 1 and he only a 4-Star an under-sized QB from 2007 Kellen Moore according to Scout.com. 21 Top 100 and Boise State 0 according to Scout.com. Of course, they say that doesn’t matter; Scout.com and Rivals are just wrong. But, if that were the case which we all know it is not, then explain 15 NFL Boise State to 45 UGA. Smokescreen how great Virginia Tech is winning the ACC all cupcake conference when the very next week last season James Madison Division II beat Virginia Tech by more points than Boise State did, as Virginia Tech with their 3-Losses ended up # 16 in the AP Poll at season’s end. They would have you believe that is a worldwind tour win over a national championship contender and BCS Conference Champion – isn’t that just over-stating that now ? Oregon, they remind us was # 11 in 2009 and # 10 in 2008 – but again Oregon plays nothing but cupcakes just exactly like Virginia Tech and just exactly like Boise State, while once again we have Oregon 2009 losing to 8-5 Stanford included in their 3-Losses while Stanford did not end up in the AP Poll Top 25; and, in 2008 Oregon’s 3-Losses included losing to yet another not finishing in the Top 25 Final AP Poll California. These, being 3 of the 4 they come in here and try to make sound such great wins over such national powerhouses and the 4th ? Choke-la-homa losers of every bowl game ever, who in 2006 six seasons ago now this season also had their 3-Losses including Losing to 7-6 Oregon 2006 and Losing to Texas 2006 who lost to such powerhouses as 7-6 Kansas State. Choke-la-homa is not a great football team 2006 either with their losses to unranked in the Top 25 Kansas State and Loss to unranked in the Top 25 Texas A and M. If these teams were great teams, which they are clearly not, then the other teams – like Boise State – who beat them the same year, would be great too. Great Chance for a Win ? Hogwash. This is not Nevadaville or Toledo here; this is Georgia and I am as sick and tired of their BS this time as I was the last time I heard this same BS 2005. Oh, they say this isn’t their 2005 team back then, now. Excuse me, Boise State was 12-1 in 2004 and had the same QB we utterly destroyed while we Lost 3 games 2005 and ended up ranked the # 3 best team in The SEC in the Final AP Poll. And, the year after we beat them again with the same QB Boise State went 14-0. There is no argument you can put forth to me that this is a team who gets my respect. Who are we ? 7-Loss team, half the players with pulled quadriceps, hamstrings and groins from improper Strength and Conditioning and the other half of the players were kicked off the team. This is no springboard for Boise State to any national championship. Boise State has never had any hope and never will of being in any national championship them on their blue field with 33,000 watching in blue uniforms while they have a great uni and we have CLOWN SUITS with red pants. But, what do I know when I’ve only been right on everything that I ever said. 32-18 in route to 11-3 season.

We haven’t recruited a fullback in six (6) consecutive seasons when there are 200 fullbacks every year, including top fullbacks plucked from this state every single year. We committed one for 2012. This season, none of the “fullbacks” have been trained, and they suffer the same pulled muscles and missed practice to even learn to hold the football on your runs up the middle throwing them a bone and keeping the defense honest, and of course with our already 30 fumbles I know we put on the carpet this season, we have no one who has trained our offense to fall on those fumbles, either. Hand the football to the fullback; that’s the answer. You are right, of course, about Mike Bobo – the offensive coordinator we stole from Jacksonville State who was their QB coach – the OC no one wants who has no relevant experience for the position handed him, any more than Bryan McClendon does as RB coach or Tony Ball as Wide Receivers coach or John Lilly Tight Ends or Joe Tereshinski II Director Strength and Conditioning. No, the problem with this team is best described by Rodney Garner today saying why what Pulpwood calls Motel 6 Jon Jenkins whom you are raved about at 6′ 4″ 340 lbs who Rodney Garner has gone about his always every year running off of his recruits; well we ran off 26 who should be playing 2 nights from now. 26 just wasted mismanaged talent by these specific coaches and mostly by Mark Richt who hired this silly staff and curses at us, defending them. So what if we play no team who will finish in the Top 10 ? We will lose to teams who have no business in the Top 25 and 1 we know won’t be, will beat us. If we do play a team who does end up in the Top 10, like Alabama we will be CLOCKED. And, you know that too, and you know it from these specific facts. I root for this team as much if not more than all of you combined, but I don’t drink the Kool-Aid; instead, I say this “coaching staff” Mark Richt is responsible for and should have had removed from his job description of ever hiring another coach on his staff ever and these players such as Jon Jenkins and the recruits such as now punter 6′ 3″ 190lbs destroying mailboxes costing $60 each and 3 hours of time to install Collin Barber – these ALL need to GATA. And, don’t give me this crudola that Boise State is some great team because they beat a # 16 team once, not with their 8 wins in 31 games to-date vs the 6 BCS Conferences. Fullback run the ball, that is neither the problem nor the answer. It would be if we had one; what is Bobo to do none to even train to run the ball ? Fall Camp has come and go and we have been a joke all Fall Camp telling lies about what we have as an entire team who has never played their position and now all of a sudden they are all ready to go, no worries mate. It doesn’t work like that. Grow up. 11-3, while you sit there squirming in your seats afraid to put up that if we go 11-3, we beat no one. We have what ? A 5-Loss South Carolina team as our best opponent ? It sure ain’t Boise State.

Bill King, sir, that is one of your best articles you have written, sir. (1) I believe you have been working on this one, all Summer long and it shows. (2) It appears to me that you have been reading my posts. (3) The Richt-0-Files are going to have a bloody hard time reading this article of yours 2 nights before kick-off now and not say loudly you are not a Bulldogs’ football fan – that Kool-Aid is the answer that our boys need us now more than ever to ( Do what ? — Brag on the coaches, brag on the players, brag on the recruits, brag on how great a fan they are saying we beat Florida this year they know for sure, brag on how great a fan they are saying 2012 will be our season (with all the young pups after we ran off 26 who should be playing 2 nights from now and will not) wait until next season in other words, brag on how great a fan they are having our men’s backs with all these obviously glaring holes despite a 10-cupcake season as detailed specifically by me all Summer including the cupcake in the bowl game as we only have done all 10 seasons to-date and cupcake 2 nights from now, brag what a great fan they are and that you are not, therefore, because you call it like it is. I applaud that part because I continue to maintain that the coaching staff and players must all be told, only, to GATA. I am not in the least satisfied with 11-3 and frankly the way you word it, it looks far more like 10-3 to me that you are saying without saying it. As for your prediction and the poll last year, where is that poll this year – and how is it wrong for you to have said that we should have gone 12-2 or whatever you actually meant to say we would go instead of putting up 7 losses requiring us to go all the way to 1953, all these 58 years ago to find a season in which my beloved Bulldogs lost more than they lost last season. RB ? WR ? FS ? SS ? The whole secondary. The whole OL except for 2 – since when is 2 an OL ? And, thank you for sparing me the DISNEYdawgs.com BS about Aaron Murray flinging the all and being a dual-threat with his less than 2 yards a carry 10 fumbles and 8 interceptions along with 7 times find the other QB better than he head-to-head. 11-3, and we will have beat no one, plus a loss like you say to a CUPCAKE as ever too.

97 Chase Baker DT 6-1 296 SR

90 Billy Winn DT 6-4 295 SR

43 Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe DT 6-3 307 SO

But trust me by the end of the night on sept 3rd those will be household names in the state of Georgia.”

Michael Atkinson, if he is supposed to be so great as a Junior, why has he not stepped one foot on the field for so much as 1 play, ever ? He is not even 5′ 11″ so why you list him 6′ 1″ is anyone’s guess. 7/23/2009 he was arrested for DUI twice legal limit, hit a bridge, got out, left scene, found wandering around downtown Boise (that is a city, right ?) (not a State or a Nation?) at booked at 4:19 am – that is a Sunday by the way. On 10/11/2010, again, he was suspended from the team indefinitely. From Canada. Never played a game in his life. And, you to UGA blogs to brag about this guy ?

Chase Baker runs a 5.08 in 40-yard dash on a good day. He is unbelievably slow. He also has never played.

Billy Winn is a DE not a DT as you lie. A DE with no speed, I might add. He is 6′ 2″ and not your height you lie about, and at 4.89 speed in the 40-yard dash will NEVER see the football field in the NFL as a DE. He is no where physical enough to play DT in the NFL. He didn’t even make the WAC All Conference team. Good heavens. You are so full of yourself, Boise State fans. He averages less than 2 tackles a game all last season and now is a Senior. Tell me you are not basing your up-coming national championship hopes on this runt playing against the likes of Toledo and Idaho whom he ran up even those miserable 28 tackles total.

Ricky Tjong – never played a single down either. From the Netherlands. Never played organized football at any level, not once. Oh yeah, you got a lot of really great DT there

I thought you said you were 7 deep on the DL of all 1st round NFL draft picks ? Go back to Boise Idaho where even Lynyrd Skynyrd “It’s 8 o’clock and boys it’s time to go,” not Boise Idaho but lead singer Ronnie Van Zant changed the line … does not know your girl’s names. I sure hope Georgia has a great season because I think Coach Richt is a great coach and the SEC needs people like him. However, from reading these comments, gosh Georgia Fans are really optimistic this year. I am pulling for Georgia against Boise St, and always pull for the conference when playing non-conference teams. However, I have a hard time seeing a team with last years issues coming together that quickly. Gosh, I hope they do but there is a real possibility UGA starts 0-2. Lets hope not, but if it happens, you could still finish strong and have a good season. So, this Tide fan says, Go Dogs, beat Boise St for the SEC.

DC,

It is a little bit of a mountain to climb, but for as many problems as athletically UGA was suppose to have had from last year, the attitude on the team, might have been their biggest downfall. I think if these kids are as positive as they are portraying to the media and CMR feels invigorated, this team, will not even resemble last years. There were a few good gains, simply by addition due to subtraction or in this case, extraction. The physical tools are there, although a little raw in experience, but I never discount the heart of the player to want to succeed. It will be an interesting season, and I hope, a successful one for the DAWGS.

Last season is history. It’s a new team.

Having said that, I think 9-3 is a pretty safe call, and I agree with the reasoning. We split the first two, lose to Auburn or Fla., and lose one game that we should win.

This is one of those hypothetical questions to which we’ll never know the answer, but I wonder if Coach Richt would take 9-3 today if he could. I’d like to think he’s aiming higher than that.

Thomas Brown – Your statistics need some major corrections:

“Chase Baker runs a 5.08 in 40-yard dash on a good day. He is unbelievably slow. He also has never played.”

His stats from last year: (3L means 3-time letterman)
DT Chase Baker 3L 6-1 296 (6.5 TFL 4.5 S)

“Billy Winn is a DE not a DT as you lie. A DE with no speed, I might add. He is 6′ 2″ and not your height you lie about, and at 4.89 speed in the 40-yard dash will NEVER see the football field in the NFL as a DE. He is no where physical enough to play DT in the NFL. His stats from last year:
DT Billy Winn 3L 6-4 295 (9.5 TFL 4.5 S)

“Ricky Tjong – never played a single down either. From the Netherlands. Never played organized football at any level, not once. Oh yeah, you got a lot of really great DT there”

His stats from last year:
DT Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe 1L 6-3 307 (6.5 TFL 2.5 S)

The DEs are:
DE Shea McClellin 3L 6-3 258 (13.5 TFL, 9.5 sacks)
DE Tyrone Crawford 1L 6-4 276 (3.5 TFL, 7.0 sacks)

Add safety George Iloka:
S George Iloka 3L 6-3 216 (63 T, 3 TFL, 2 INT)

Here’s the national media outlook on some of the defensive guys:
DL is Lindy’s #7 for 2011. Winn is #2 DT, McClellin #7 DE

Winn is preseason AA-1st Team – SN and Athlon; 2nd Team Phil Steele and Lindy’s
McClellin is preseason AA – 2nd Team Athlon
Iloka is Preseason AA – 2nd Team Athlon

I think this season is probably the most simple in a long time for UGA. If we win the first two and make it out of Jacksonville we’ll go to the SEC championship (don’t kknow if we’ll win but we’ll be in ATL) and probably a BCS bowl. If we win one of the first two we’ll probably go 10-2. If we lose the first two it will likely spiral out of control. I’m typically not big on the psychology of wins and losses but let’s face facts, a ton is riding on these first two games. You either come out of them with confidence that propels you forward or heart break that sets you back. Hoping by 9/11 we’re full of confidence.

The O-Line is a disaster anyway, but even with that I think the D would be good enough to carry us to 10 wins. The problem is we need SEC-caliber safeties to go with good CBs and a solid front 7 (which I predict we will have), but until I see any proof whatsoever that any S on this team can 1) stay over the top of a speedy WR in coverage, 2) put a solid hit on anyone, 3) help in the running game, color me a pessimist about the season. I will be thrilled with even 8 wins in the regular season.

Winning is a process. It isn’t a function of pedigree or desperation.

When Green and Pollack stepped in to help usher in change for the program in 2001 they had DYNAMIC veterans all around them. Remember the NFL caliber talent off that team: Haynes, Smith, Watson, McMichael, Stinchcomb. On D: Phillips, Geathers, Gilbert, Bailey, Sean Jones, Pollack…

We still finished 8-4. An SEC Championship came the following year in 2002. We stepped onto the National stage and along with newly minted veterans in the likes of Green and Pollock, we reloaded.

2011 doesn’t present with such possibility. We have questions at every level on both offense and Defense save for QB .

As of today , only our Special Teams are solid. How many starters are returning to their old positions on O and D? Exactly. Even the position and strength coaches are new. Again, winning is a process.

We’re well on our way and we shouldn’t fire Richt or change our system (as much as I’d like to out of spite) because continuity is key. We’ll need to build on this Freshman class. By the time they are Juniors we should be back to being where we need to be.

We’ll be MUCH improved, we’ll compete and we’ll finish 7-5.
