Are you ready to ring the chapel bell?
The UGA chapel bell features prominently in the new promotional spot. (University of Georgia)
In a complete turnabout from the lame spot for UGA that ran during football telecasts last season, a group of Bulldog alums have put together an awesome new film that will debut during the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.
The 30-second promo is being previewed on a special Facebook page.
The theme is that you may leave the University of Georgia … but it never leaves you.
And it has music by Athens’ own R.E.M., too.
If you’re a Dawgs fan, it’ll definitely give you goosebumps. Time to ring the chapel bell!
UPDATE: For those who don’t know, the song is “Oh My Heart” from R.E.M.’s most recent album, “Collapse Into Now.” On the band’s official website, manager Bertis Downs said of the video: “The enthusiasm of the filmmakers, the resonance of the song in the film, and the band’s love and respect for Athens — those were all factors in our decisions. As alumni ourselves, we’re proud of the PSA and feel the song really complements the film’s emotion and imagery.”

It is truely amazing to me, how such childish remarks can be made by UGA haters on these blogs. Also amazing is how they must sit around their computers all day long and wait for the next thing UGA, so they can comment negatively on it. I bet if they put that much effort into finding a job or in their school work, they could actually be successful in life and a successful member of society. This is great (although I wished they’d featured a shot of Milledge Hall, my old stomping grounds, as they did in the promo).
Outsiders may not get it, but all those of us who experienced Athens surely will.

I remember as a child in the early 70’s, the tug of the rope as it pulled you up when you got it to double ring. The line of kids, and then getting back in line again. So joyous the thrill of the lift up, trying to avoid getting sideways into the wooden tower, Go you Hairy Dogs!!

@alphare: i’ll give you a little background about what i think bill’s trying to accomplish. the tv spot we ran last year was horribly amateurish, and has been a source of embarrassment (among others) for dawg fans (especially alums). it looked like it was thrown together at the last minute for a class project. bill king, unsurprisingly, complained a lot about it (bill is very negative, if you’re not a frequent reader of his blog). at any rate, it’s great for a lot of us to see that last year’s commercial — apparently shot at some point in the late 80’s — is being replaced by a cleaner, slicker, and more meaningful one.

No, I am not a Techie, but a long term UGA ticket holder. While I have met many alumni at the games it seems like it is a very small percentage.

By that definition, Richt, Bobo, and the majority of UGA fans that post their B.S. on this blog are insane. Also, a history lesson for UGA fans. Dooley won 3 SEC titles, and 1 N.C, and it was 20 years before UGA won another SECC. That means UGA fans and bigtime boosters excepted mediocrity for 20 years. Richt has won 2 SECC Championships, none since 2005, so the way i see it, the UGA fanbase and big time boosters will give him 15 more years of his mediocrity until it’s time for them to get angry. Talk about insanity.

New UGA Uniforms growing on me – I really like the helmet.
Have not seen the new BOISE Nike Combat designed for this game yet.
Rumor is ours in entirely BLUE – if so – then their could be some epilectic seizures in the dome due to all the intense colors.
I am still feeling good about this game for Boise.
No doubt, this will be great competition – but Boise is beyond trying to jell. UGA is trying to get back to where they were several years ago – being relevent – and have so many new pieces coming into play this year that it will take a few games.
We are catching UGA at their weakest moment of the season – which is good for us.
Too bad we did not play you last year!!!
I do think UGA will be a far better team at the end of this season – than where they were end of 2010.

hey boise in atlanta , what did your parents tell you about drinking so early in the afternoon. UGA will physically dominate this game. Look at the size difference in our lines and how much more athletically our players are than yours. Look for UGA to line up and smash Boise down the field with our running game. Crowd the line – put 8- 9 in the box – then we hit Charles and other receivers.
On defense – Boise will be one dimensional as no way the Broncos will run on UGA – so look for your QB to be intercepted several times during the game.

Thanks guys – been working all day – this is my first break. Will check out uniforms in a minute.
Hey – best of luck to UGA this year. Living in Atl has been great with all the different college football fans – who needs frigging hockey in ATL – this is college football country and it’s 365 chatter all year. I am in heaven!
Since being here – have followed the SEC big time as well as ACC and the college landscape. While I have really enjoyed following Georgia – for some reason – I can’t stand Clemson or South Carolina. They have done nothing to me – it’s just a vibe. so good luck in that game. Hope GA TECH beats Clemson as well.
Most of you would be surprised how knowledgable fans are back in Idaho and out west. We are very rabid for our schools – yet we do follow the SEC as well as the entire landscape.
Hoping Richt has a great year – this will really help Boise after we beat you guys!!!!

I think UGA’s D is gonna be the best you’ve seen since the last time you came down to the state of Georgia. Our offense? Average at best. Special teams? Ranked by some as the best in the country. Could decide the game. If it comes down to a late FG, you think your kicker can make it?

moleman – funny, I was thinking the same – but that was last year.
You could tell UGA players were not mentally prepared for UCF and obviously did not take that game serious. I guess they figured they could goldbrick the prep and just show up and win – becasue they are Georgia – much bigger lineman and athletically superior just like bufordking says.
I think the coaching staff was as guilty as the players in terms of how serious they took that bowl game. What an insult to the Georgia fans that spent their money and showed up to support their football team. Did that game define 2010 UGA football or what?
However, this is a new year. I give Richt credit for making the changes he has in S&C, player personnel, diet, etc. I do think UGA will have a much better year – and like I said, we are catching UGA at a great time. It may take a few games to jell – but this program could turn into a monster by the end of the season.

Could also promote the journalism school and mention the Peabody’s and list all the famous names of broadcasters and print that have graduated from UGA (sports and news)…
This might sway Super 11 pick, Mr. Watkins from Woodward Academy to commit to UGA since he is interested in a career in broadcast journalism….
Be proud of our academics and athletics…that’s what these PSA’s are supposed to be…

joey – Boise has very good special teams – I feel good about our kickers. However – and to your point, UGA’s kickers are outstanding. If this turns into a shootout – kick-off coverage could determine the outcome.

The dogs are always confident in August, but by the time they leave Jacksonville every October, all they do is make excuses. Boise is going to blow georgia out, Carolina makes them 0-2, and they will get their annual beat down in Jacksonville on the way to a 6-6 or 5-7 season. Again

Just checked out the Boise unis. They look pretty much normal, cannot say the same for ours. A silver pant and a narrower stripe on the helmet would have made them look much better. However, the players seem to like them, and I guess it is a done deal, so we have to get over it and like them for what they are. The unis have no bearing on the game, however, it’s what’s in them that ultimely matters!

Ahhhhh, the haters. It is the time of year that they can spread their hope for a disappointing season to all the Dawg Nation. But those of us who have been around awhile know that this is going to be a great season for several reasons and not least is the ease of schedule this year and Tenn and UF being down. Both first 2 games are very winnable and so are all the rest. Do not be surprised to see UGA in the SEC championship game this year. If UGA beats South Carolina, it will be theirs to lose and I dont think that these hungry, stronger and faster Dawgs will. Defense will be better with a year under the belt in the new system. Has SC beat last year IN Columbia WITHOUT AJ GREEN but will be in ATHENS this year. Expect another defensive battle with home field giving UGA the win. That and a couple of turnovers forced by the defense. So suck on that all you haters. UGA will be stronger and will man-handle some opponents this year, especially Boise St. We have some men instead of boys this year, stronger D, better running game, best special teams in the nation, great QB, great group of receivers. Talk all youre smack heaters, cuz thats all you got. NO WAY UF wins this year. NO WAY forget about that. It will take a miracle or for UGA to just not show up and forfeit. It is going to be a great year. Especially if Bobo throws to the backs! Especially Crowell. Man Crowell can bust it from anywhere and is elusive. Throw it to him with some room, linebackers have no chance. Figgins can catch too. Murray will have targets everywhere if Bobo will do it! Remember herschel catching passes and goign the distance? Bobo needs to go and watch the film and use Crowell like that. Get him isolated on a linebacker and some room. You are talking 20 yards a pop and some over 50. It is going to be a great year, especially if we win both of the first 2 games, but if we dont, just win the SC game and we are in the drivers seat to the SEC Championship. Like it or not haters. Ahhhhhh it is good to be a Dawg and in the SEC East in 2011. The next 5 years actually. Everybody will be looking up at UGA year after year.

I just got done reading, the rule change concerning blocking below the waist, included in this comment. Talk about confusing. I can see a bunch of penalties resulting from it this year. A lot of film reviews if possible also.
“Blocking below the waist was changed to try to make the rule easier for players to understand. Players who line up more than 7 yards away from the ball on the line of scrimmage may block below the waist only players opposite of him as long as the direction of the block is straight downfield, or players that are toward the nearest sideline.
Running backs not on the line of scrimmage but within 5 yards of either side of the center, Georgia Tech’s A-backs for example, may block below the waist in any direction. Players within the tackle box — running backs and fullbacks — may block below the waist in any direction. Players in motion at the snap may block only below the waist either straight ahead or toward the adjacent sideline.”
All this to think about in the space of 5-7 seconds. It is going to be tough enough for the officials to keep all that under watch, much less the guy doing the blocking. Once again, the NCAA rules committee has managed to make a monster out of a simple rule change.

The team uga puts on the field this year is not as good as the one from last year. Dept is a very big issue. Injuries and they will happen will leave Ga crippled in a few positions. This is the same team who when they played their last game lost to UCF. The same team that lost to Colorado. This season WILL be a repeat of last year and boy how the excuses are going to flow one week from today !

Had had enough BS articles and comments from the AJC and “UGA Blogers” regarding the uniforms. Seemed that the topic was just used by our writers to stir the hits.
This link says it right ON to me. Very good read on the topic of uniforms, tradition, and creating excitement about UGA.
Says it like I see it and I think very accurate : Note hand sitters and old tradition. I think it does hold us back to a big degree and this is comming from a guy who loved James Brown, The Tracks, sitting on the Grass hills and slipping a Jack Black into the stands! Great read and wanted to share.

just because the secondary did not start does not mean that they are inexperienced. They have played about 30% of the snaps last year BSU has always rotated guys in keep them in game shape physically and mentally. It is the Human Resource advantage that is coach Pete. The D line has all but one back and 3 ready to replace the one. LB are the best they have ever been.
the WR that were lost were replaced with taller faster kids. The O line is set up stronger than last year.
Running Backs are healthy an experienced.. I would say that Boise is OK everywhere but PK.
