Aaron Murray and Mike Bobo had one of their poorer games the last time Georgia took the field against an opponent. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
If you’re running down the checklist of things Mark Richt’s football team needed to improve from last year, many of the personnel needs seem to have been addressed and a new approach to strength and conditioning looks promising.
But what we won’t know until Georgia is facing adversity on the field is whether they’ll consistently play as hard as they can, something last year’s Dogs didn’t always do.
Richt talked during the offseason about how distressing it was to sometimes see his team outplayed and Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald recently followed up with the coach for specifics. “When you watch the film and you see another team played harder than we did, that’s sad, that’s my fault,” Richt said. “We had some games like that in my opinion. I can name one for sure and that’s the bowl game. It was most evident that game, maybe that’s the one in my craw and is the one I’m talking about the most.”
No argument there. But what I found really interesting was the response Weiszer got from Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, who flatly said the lack of effort didn’t come from his unit. “It ain’t happened on defense. When you look at the Central Florida game, I thought the guys on defense were busting their tail. Now we didn’t finish the game the way that we wanted to, but to say that those guys outworked us, that ain’t right. That didn’t happen.”
Sounds like Grantham was calling out Mike Bobo’s offense as the laggards against Central Florida, which pretty much jibes with the way I remember that particular game, a low point for the program during the Richt era.
But that isn’t entirely a fair assessment of the 2010 Dogs. I can recall some times last season when the defense was guilty of arm tackling and diving at running backs’ feet, so you can’t pin the lack of effort completely on Bobo’s troops. In general, the 2010 team just didn’t seem to be the hardest working bunch ever to play Between the Hedges.
Richt’s right about one thing; ultimately, he’s the one who shoulders the blame. His teams have had a tendency in recent years to come out flat at times and to just plain not want it as badly as the opponents.
If the Dogs are going to turn things around — and turn down the heat under the head coach’s seat — that’s definitely going to have to change.

“Dogs need to erase memory of a woeful effort”
Which one? It certainly was the game against that powerhouse UCF, but there were many others as well. When you go 10-3 then 8-5 to 6-7 in the last three years, woeful is a rather weak word to describe the current state of UGA football.

Same old story. We need more intensity and it isn’t coming from Richt. Bobo seems lost. Grantham has that intensity and maybe things will start clicking for the D this year.
But fans shouldn’t count on us whipping Boise based on the fact that we’ve beaten them in the past. Their program is on the rise and ours has fallen in the past 5 years.

The playcalling could also be described as “coming out flat” at times, also. Hopefully, Coach Bobo has studied his own past performance and will make adjustments. He tends to overlook our TE position in the passing game, yet it’s our deepest receiver position this year. So, that will be a good test for Bobo. If Charles averages 2 touches per game again this year, it will be a very bad sign!! Bobo has a lot of other frustrating tendencies, and hopefully those disappear this year as well….. We need to attack the defense on every drive – 60 minutes. GO DAWGS!!

If you ask me, the 2010 Bulldogs were a better overall team than the 2009 edition. They never got blown out (we were neck and neck with Auburn into the 4th quarter: that isn’t blown out) and they were better than their record indicated.
The problem was consistency. At the start of the year, the offense was lagging and the defense was great. Then, at about Kentucky, things switched around, and the offense was firing on all cylinders while the defense was lagging. Then, at the bowl game, they switched again, with the defense playing great and the offense having no rhythm.
I have a feeling we’re gonna have both sides of the ball playing in synch every game this year. No reasoning behind it: I just have a feeling.

Geogia’s dismal Liberty Bowl performance started on special teams with the opening kick-off.
Once the yellow flag came out, the ‘Dogs seemed to stop pursuing the runner who then proceeded to the endzone. The TD came back, of course, but Georgia’s mindset was set there and then.
Thinking about it ticks me off. It should certainly tick off Coach Grantham.
I’m a little dismayed CTG deflected a bit.

In evaluation the downward slide of our Dawgs the past few years, I have concluded that Coach Richt has addressed some of the issues such as: (1) cleansing the program of some of the players that were “me” guys instead of the leaders that they were supposed to be; (2) addressing the lack of physicality by adjusting our strength and conditioning program as well as hiring a new OL coach committed to being physical instead of one that emphasized finesse; (3) a renewed focus on recruiting top players that will enhance our program and provide players who truely want to be Dawgs and team players. Of still a concern is the consistency and predicability of our offense since Coach Richt turned the offense over to Coach Bobo. I believe that Bobo is an outstanding QB coach, but he is mediocre as an OC. My hope is that Coach Richt will step back in a take more control of the offense now that McGarity has a system in place that will allow Coach Richt to focus more on our football team than other “outside” responsibilities. It will not be long until we see if the new formula for success works.

On another note. I am shocked that Florida told Jordan Watkins they didn’t have any space for him in this recruiting class. There has to be more to this story. I don’t follow FL recruting that closely, but this is one of the very top players in Georgia and a 5 star rated guy by Scout.com
Obviously, FL was interested in him at one point when they offered him a scholarship, but he narrowed his choices to UGA and Stanford when Florida told him they had no room for him in this recruitig class. It doesn’t look like FL has that many DE DT types on their committment list for Feb 2012, so I just don’t understand it? I’m not sure I have ever heard of a team turning down a 5 star recruit.
I don’t think Saban would do this. Anyone know any scoop about this?

Hopefully all of the players with “me” attitudes have left the program. However, the needed intensity and discipline start at the top with MR. I sense a new attitude this year. Bring back the Junkyard Dawgs with fire in their eyes and the will to win. Even defeats are easier to bear when true grit is displayed. Dawgs have the talent, without much dispute, to match up with practically every team in the country. With no injuries, the O-Line, our unit with the least depth, should punch some holes for the RBs. Murray is ready for a fantastic year and I believe the whole D will be greatly improved. Ogletree looks like a future NFL’er at LB. Can’t wait to see Mitchell leaving some DBs in their tracks. And yes, I love the Kool Aid. 10-3 record sounds like a good turnaround, with 2012 shaping up to be a special season in Athens.

The team rid themselves of some bad seeds and replenished them with yes some young kids, but kids that wanted to play together and for the University of Georgia. I don’t like Bobo’s play calling or his in-game adjustments (or lack of), Chris, but I’ve got to believe Richt has gotten more involved on the offensive side. The “cutting-edge football” had to be about throwing different formations and misdirection at our opponents.
If we come out running the same old stuff, Richt will be seen as just telling UGA fans what we want to hear, instead of being serious about it.

I just think Mark Richt needs to show more confidence in his players and let them see that he trusts them to go make the play. Look at how LSU performs under Les Miles because he gambles so much. He only gambles because he trusts his players’ ability to go out and execute the plays called. 9 out of 10 times they’re successful on it. When Richt didn’t go for it on 4th and inches on the goal line vs. UCF in the bowl game, I feel that the players gave up trying. Because I guarantee you somebody thought “He doesn’t trust us to get 4 inches?” How is he going to trust us to win the ball game? There was no energy out there. TRUST your players Richt. They’re playing for you, put the game in their hands and just go for it.

@ JimDog 85 (you hit the nail on the head) that was the crowning nail in the coffin to last 2 years of CMR tenure. We drove the better part of 65 -80 yards on that drive, we had UCF thinking and then reacting on D, and we get down to the 2 yard line and instead of going for it and even if they stop us we put them on the 2, we kick an extra point and loose every chance of taking the wind out of their sails from the jump!!!!! After that thier D felt like they could stop us at any time and our D looked like Dang our coach has no trust in us to stop a C-USA team…not to mention that the O was handcuffed from that point on by CMC and BOBO’s lack of creativity after that…..sorry to say with all changes CMC or BOBO maybe next if we don’t do a 1-1 out gate

The ghost of seasons past keeps me from getting too optimistic on the dawgs upcoming season. The memory of Lattimore running over our defense still haunts me and others brave enough to mention it. Same for the late TD by Ark to win last years game, et al.
Those “ghosts” are difficult to erase from memory and as much as I try too I see no proof on paper that this years team is any better than last years. Kellen Moore is as good a QB as the dawgs will see this season and Lattimore as tough as ever barring any injury against East Carolina.
If the dawgs can keep both Moore and Lattimore in check while the offense does its job it’ll be the biggest turn around in bulldog history. Go 2-0 out the gate and stay focused and injury free it could be a great season for the dawgs and erase for many a dawg fan the ghosts of last season.

SSI-Gator—you are right about 2 NC and one Heisman. THOSE ARE FACTS. I would not say Urban Meyer walks on water.
The best thing he did was recruit Tim Tebow. Tebow made better than average teams (7-5/8-4/9-3) and made them great. In the 2 years he did not have Tebow he lost 9 games with great players from great recruiting (both his and Zook’s).
Meyer spent way too much time in 2009 running up the score with first teamers though 50-55 minutes so the back-ups had vey little experience. What would have happened with those great recruits were starters in 2010 (pre-season All-SEC John Brantley for example) if they had been used in games for a quarter so? I guess Tebow’s stats would not have been so impressive. THOSE ARE FACTS.
The saddest part is the greatest SEC QB was never coached correctly to be an NFL QB. He could have been another Steve Young or greater. Instead, he plays 2nd or 3rd team on an average Denver team that wants to cut him but can’t because of the PR backlash.
Tim Tebow as a 3-year starter he won 1 SEC championship. Danny Wuerful (sp?) won 4 SEC championships as a starter. THOSE ARE FACTS.
How did he ever lose a game with Tebow? How did Vince Dooley ever lose a game with Hershel Walker? GREAT PLAYERS WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS.

It is all on Richt’s shoulders. ESPN ( or someone) recently analyzed recruiting the last 10 years and found Georgia to have the second best classes in the country. Well, maybe, that’s a lot of opinion, but I wouldn’t think it’s not far off. My opinion has been that our assit. coach’s have not been on par with the talent and money this program has. Mark has had the money and the freedom to go out and hire the very best….and he hasn’t. He also allows staff to coach positions they either didn’t play or aren’t qualified to coach. He’s also allowed coach’s who are not performing to continue on staff. This in a nutshell is a big reason we have not been the SEC title game lately. The few who have left have pursued other jobs for the most part, not recruited away. It HAS held us back.

I also agree w everyone on here speaking of past lacks of effort. I have felt that for at least 5 years about these guys. Not always of course….but there are games where they just seemed to have their heads in the clouds(Bama in Athens opening a can ..31-0) or get frustrated(remember all the flags 2 years ago) or just plain thought they SHOULD win(Liberty Bowl). The offense has not stood out yet this preseason. We need consistancy in the running game to beat Boise and SC. Murray is going to be hung out to dry this year. Murray needs a running game to open the pass. MRs offense is set up off the running game, which is so predictable.

Grantham was correct in taking up for his defense against UCF. Our defense had a hard time last year changing to the 3-4 and aloud a lot of easy touchdowns because a lot of the defensive back’s hadn’t learned all of their responsibilities yet. But by the UCF game they played a very good game . They may have bent at times but didn’t break and the progress the defense made deserves our praise.
The reason’s we lost that game was :
1- Poor play calling
2- Driving down the field and on fourth and inches we kicked a field goal on a 1-AA team. Against Alabama maybe okay but not UCF. Offensive line gave up after that lack of confidence move.
3- Murray’s worst game of the year. Very poor execution. He has got to be able to play in front of his home state people without panicking.
That loss was definitely all on Bobo and the offense. It was definitely our poorest effort I can remember. NO pride at all. Just didn’t want to be there.
If Grantham really had a pair instead of choking again,

Athens Dawg, have tou read what the actual conversation was on the sideline prior to kiccking that FG? I don’t think anyone walked away thinking it was really a “trust” issue. Ironically he did that speficially TO motivate them. Didn’t work, but he went for it on 4th down something like 8 times last year, and that didn’t seem to prop up thier execution eitehr.
For my money, if players are giving up because they don’t get their way on one call,(especially when they brought it upon themselves) they need to turn in their uniform and hit the road. Which I don’t think is what happened.

As I have mentioned before – I think UGA is a potential monster if they can jell.
However – coming out of the gate – there is going to be some inconsistency and growing.
For that reason – I see BOISE STATE winning a hard fought game against UGA?
– Boise is rolling in terms of high level team play, consistency, motivation, strategy and game day preparedness, game day play calling.
The consistency factor is how we prepare and the type of players we are getting. Overachievers that are extremely athletic – but not at USC or Oregon.
- UGA has underachieved, gone through the motions, players goldbricking off season workouts.
Now – I think UGA is on the upswing with the changes Richt has made.
Must of been humbling to look in the mirror and determine what and where the deficiencies are.
Congrats to Richt for the changes he as made – after a few games – this team will jell.
Predictions for UGA:
Losses: Boise, USCe
Probable Losses: Mississippi State, Florida
Potential Losses: Tennessee, Auburn
Wins: Coastal Carolina, Ole Miss, Vandy, New Mexico State, Kentucky, GT
After that bowl loss to UCF – it would have been justified to make a coaching change. That was a pathetic effort and really showed a lack of pride.

You kicked a field goal vs. Middle Florida on 4th and short. You attempted a fade route to Durham in OT vs. Florida when they had a punter tying to kick field goals. You’ve replaced Tanner Strickland and Boling with Bean Anderson and Chris Burnette. Instead of trying to make it work with Munzemeir at fullback, you now have Figgins and Zander “Stump” Ogeltree. Substantial upgrades at OT,OG, and FB. Now when faced with these decisions, Richt/Bobo go for it vs. C. Florida, and make it, and pound it down the Gators throat in OT. It’s all about personnel, especially on your offensive line. Better stay healthy though, because your OL backups don’t belong in the SEC. Signed for one reason and one reason only.

Not to make excuses, but it’s not that uncommon for the underrated team to upset the favorite when:
the favorite is not that excited to be there, makes mistakes, and takes winning the game for granted. Couple that with the underdog believing it can win, minimizing mistakes, and playing their heart out, and it can happen. This game reminded me of the Tangerine bowl in 1974 with Miami of Ohio in one of Dooleys most embarrassing losses. But, maybe this will turn out to be a wake-up call and some good will come out it.

A few years ago Notre Dame was 6-6 and decided their effort was so bad they didn’t deserve to go to a bowl game that year. I always have respected them for that decision knowing how much money they were walking away from. UGA should have made that decision last year. The UCF lose was the most embarrassing game I have ever seen Georgia play. Not because we lost but because nobody wanted to be there including the offensive coaches , which does include CMR.

I’ll be the first to claim I was saying “aw come on, go for it”, but that was out of pure air chair bravado. I certainly wasn’t doing any psychoanalysis on our players fragile trust issues. I just thought it’s a meaningless, who-cares, bowl, so what the heck.
But I wasn’t too upset given that: we have just discussed as they were driving how UGA was 6-0 when scoring first. Even the players had been in the papers saying they HAD to score some way, some how, first.
Then I read what Richt said to them, and despite it not working, I thought it was still a point worth making.

Motivation is definitely key – It’s why the apparent jerks like Nick Saban consistently get their teams to play very well – their obsession over winning adds pressure and urgency to players, and eventually it breeds confidence. Hopefully Richt and his staff are regaining the urgency of the past that was evident when Van Gorder walked the sidelines.
Bacarri Rambo is the one player I remember loafing most often throughout the season, but overall I am not sure the defense loafed much – In some respects they just failed to cover and tackle properly. Still, they did just as well and better than the offense most of the year.

I know that being anything less than supremely optimistic in the preseason is taken as a sign of being a traitor, a troll, or a fan of another team in disguise, but this article summarizes exactly what’s been bothering me for years about this team. We’ve seen this inconsistent effort since the ‘06 Sugar Bowl, really since the end of the Green/Pollack/Van Gorder era. Even the ‘07 season was marred by lackluster efforts against Tennessee, South Carolina, and Vandy – we lost 2 of those 3 games and should have lost to Vandy, killing our conference and national title chances.
I hope Richt proves me wrong, but I’m not holding out much hope for that. He’s simply not a motivator, for whatever reason. I suspect it’s because the players don’t respect or have that healthy fear of him. Not playing 100% on each down does not appear to have consequences.
I’m reminded of the definition of insanity.

One of the problems we have is that we have 4-star athletes with 2-star cajones. Georgia football has gotten soft in recent year, especially on defense. We haven’t had a single player on defense that can touch David Pollack or Thomas Davis, or old-schoolers like Eddie Weaver, Terry Hoage or Scott Woerner. They were playmakers who laid on the line, every play.
These are the kinds of plays that used to define Georgia football, especially the defense:

Richt still has a few shots left in his proverbial gun should things not go according to plan this season. Grantham is a proven commodity in the coaching ranks. Given a few seasons to really build up the defense and depth, I think you will see signs of the old Junkyard Dawg mentality.
Bobo, to me, is still the wild card. 3 and 11 at midfield…draw up the middle to Carlton Thomas….falls flat. A.J. Green is gone and the offense will have to find new heroes. We have been deplorable up front the last few years. Granted injuries have been an issue, but depth through recruiting and just a whole toughness has been missing.
Richt is in charge. However, his head may not necessarily be the one that roles if things don’t work out.

As a UGA fan I am deeply embarrassed by the actions and the words used by SOME members of our fan base. Some have become so delusional that I can completely understand why the constantly insult us. While I didn’t expect 8-5 & 6-7 the past years, I also didn’t expect them to have the best success. Joe Cox was exactly what I thought he was and , Aaron Murray was a freshman. I think that the recent success of the SEC in the title game has went to your heads. I love UGA and, am ready for the team to achieve some of these lofty expectations but I will not turn on CMR or any coach for that matter if they don’t. As long as they are coaches at UGA I will give my support to them. GO DAWGS!!!

Why Richt let Bobo call plays:
“I get up and I pray every morning and I try to listen to what God has to say to me, and it just kind of hit me in my heart that it was something that I needed to do and something I should do,” he said. “I didn’t want to argue with Him.”
It is God’s will. Richt will never, never, never, fire Bobo.

Todd Grantham is right, the defense did well enough to have won at least 11 games if the offense did it’s part. Remember, South Carolina didn’t score but 3 points in the second half against a new install defense.
Defense Rank under Grantham: Rush 56th, Pass 17th, Total 23rd
Offense Rank under Mark Richt: Rush 73rd, Pass 40th, Total 56(Same offense under Richt)
Richt’s offense hasn’t been ranked in the top 20 in total offense and rush offense since he became the hc but yet he gets a pass.

Sometimes the truth hurts. If others want to call it being an energy vampire, so be it. I call it facing facts. The lack of fight in these Dawgs is my #1 concern. It seems that conditioning has been addressed, which should help with the late game wilts. However, it remains to be seen if CMR can get these Dawgs to consistently play with a purpose . His job depends on it.

Dear Bill,
This is why i think your a complete idiot; Coach Grantham did not throw the Offense under bus, he defended his guys. There is a big difference between blaming and defending. Plus you can’t possibly know if holes have been filled or if the weight training program has improved the teams physicality. You are going off of hear-say. This is why I rarely read your article and its really unfortunate that a writer that jumps to conclusion as quickly as you do has the platform that you have.

Folks cranking on Grantham and BOBO.
Got to love Grantham’s passion – He is correct that the defense played well against UCF. However, UCF scored the winning points in the 4Q. As a matter of fact – UGA’s defense was outperformed in the 4Q on many occasions and could not stop anyone on 3rd down.
I do think that the UGA has addressed the correct personnel for the 3-4 – this should help. However, with the 4Q woes last year – Grantham best served to focus on this year and not comment on last year.
As for Bobo – apparantly a great QB coach – I think the real issue is OLINE depth and development.
Maybe the new OLINE Coach will do a better job.
Tide roll is correct in his posts about OLINE being a key to success.

The players on the 2010 version lacked either one or both.
Effort also reflects the discipline of the head coach and the fear he cast over a program.

Richt sounds like a broken record when he talks about how flat his team plays, and especially when he says he will take the blame for it. It has happened so many times since 2007, it is so pathetic to hear him talk about it. Either change the way you coach these kids up, or stop talking. Because after 4 seasons of this lack of effort and lack of having his team prepared, nothing he says really matters. Starting with the 2007 Tenn. game in Knoxville, to the Bama game and Florida games in 2008, to the Tenn. ass whipping again in Knoxville in 2009, to the Florida laughter again in 2009, to the entire 2010 season, ending with the C.FLorida game. How many times does this coach and his coaching staff get a free pass? Most other schools would have had it with this lack of leadership, and this lack of coaching this guy and his staff have provided, but not at UGA. If this guy has any morals at all, and that’s all you ever hear about him, he will resign after this season, and stop embarrassing the UGA program. Would rather hear quotes from Grantham instead of Bobo and Richt. These 2 guys have no credibility with UGA fans anymore. Hope the players take it upon themselves to be prepared mentally and physically, because there is no way in hell this coach has what it takes to have them prepared.

“As is the case with most SEC teams, Georgia has quality athletes and will put up a fight, but the sense of urgency lies with the Broncos. Boise always seems to step it up on national television and never seems fazed, so look for a win over the Bulldogs to start the season.”

If a team takes on the personality of its coach, no wonder we can’t beat Florida. Richt soils his pants every time he enters the Gator Bowl (or whatever the hell they’re calling it now). That’s really my biggest issue with Richt – he can’t beat Florida even when he has the better team. Mississippi can beat them. So can Auburn and Miss. St. Hell, the whole SEC West save Arky beats them about half the time. But not us. It sticks in my craw. I had different expectations from a Bowden disciple.
My feeling is, let’s try someone else. Ohio State got rid of John Cooper, let’s get rid of our version. There’s plenty of coaches out there who can lose 8 out of 10 against Florida, for much less money.

If it’s important to you, I will ask the next time that I see them. I think their point was that when the coach doesn’t have faith in you, it sort of takes the wind out of their sails.
My take on it is that not everybody on the team is happy with CMR. He’s not as highly thought of as some may want to believe. The players are playing for UGA and themselves, and really don’t care who is the HC. If CMR is sent packing, there may not be such an uproar that some may think from the players.

Not sure how this discussion transgressed into the UGA / UF Game but I guess it oftens happens. I’d have to agree with most of what I read though I would add the following that most Gator Fans will dismiss as meaningless;
In any close game a home advantage is worth 3 points. It is irrational for anyone to argue that UF plays a home game against The Dawgs every damn year. Laugh all you want but Vegas odds give points for home field advantage and The Gators get it every year.
Yeah, yeah, we owned them when they had crappy coaching (Hall) but when coaching was even (or better) then that homefield advantage can make a big difference in any close game.
I still support a Georgia Dome / Jacksonville on alternating years. What’s wrong with that?

UGA fans are so funny. What in the world gives you the right to say you will beat boise? Richt has produced only two 1000 yard rushers in 11 seasons and you expect people to believe that Crowell is going to come in and make a difference and pass block? You guys are going to get lit up by a much more sound and well coached team. Stick a fork in richt. He is done. Even with a favorable schedule uga will struggle all year. If you think a team takes on the personality of their coach I think the uga fans should take responsibility too. You guys are the most arrogant people and that also trickles down to the players and gives them big heads. There is no evidence you guys will be any better and losing green, a player that kept you in games is gone. Saying you think you should be 2-0 and already talking about winning the east is just laughable.

Shut up dawg fans. I speak the truth. You don’t need my permission to be enthusiastic, just trying to give you a dose of reality and to call your bs. How pathetic are you people talking about strength coaches and a better nutrition program? Ha. Now that is reaching. You guys are desperate. Desperate for any kind of respect but how can anyone respect a program that thinks the can win the national title every year while simultaneously ignoring you only have two conference titles in 30 years? I mean I will give you that you might beat boise in a close one but you guys will get tossed by the conference teams. Bunch of cowards. Hey we are uga, we cancel a home and home with oregon and schedule boise in atlanta. You want respect? You earn it, not by taking the sissy way out. Ahh uga fans, so funny, how does it feel to not have a national title like the others and have losing head to head records against every decent team in the conference. I asked you a fair and legitimate question about how uga has some issues and your answer is to call me stupid and operate with this “because we are uga” mentality. That’s exactly your problem. Until your fan base admits you are a mediocre program you will never rise up and win. Bunch of whiny babies with excuses every year. Groundhog day. Who will you blame this year?

Dawgs return to glory? When exactly are the glory days? In 1980 before the conference was competitive? When you won your other national title during world war II when you fielded a team while half the country didn’t feild teams because their men were fighting battles like real men? Uga will go 8-4 at best and that is only bc you miss alabama lsu and ark. Otherwise you would be a six loss team. Uga will be looking for a new coach in three months.

There were a number of games last season when the defense ran out of gas and allowed the opponent to score at will and win the game. Florida and Auburn game to name two. The offense kept putting scores up but the defense kept allowing the other team to do the same which indicates that they were worn down. They caved in.

Bill, you really are a ‘glass virtually empty’ aren’t you? I mean you seem to find fault with Bobo and Richt regardless of the situation. What are you, on Don Leeburn’s payroll or something…or it it Leon Farmer’s?
I don’t know how the game with Boise State will turn out but there are a bunch of, so-called, experts that’ll have some ’splainin’ to do if we win the game…and if we dominate them, then it’ll take more than explanations. I’m done predicting, guess we’ll just have to play the game.

The effort was there on defense but their confidence in what they were doing was lacking. A new defense, learning what to do and being hesitant to react was a culprit of the defense.

Ironic how the weakness of our O Line has been left out of the sportswriters coverage the last couple of weeks. All I read is how good we look except for yesterday’s scrimmage against the Scout Team.
I remain skeptical about Richt as a Head Coach and have even less confidence in Bobo as OC. Richt & Bob have proven themselves as failures at this level of SEC football in my opinion.
This is Grantham’s year to prove he is worth the money he is being paid or he’s out too.
So, despite improved talent this season we still have a weak O Line and below average coaching. This does not instill alot of confidence going into these first two games but it will hopefully result in a final answer about the coaching staff staying or going at the end of the season.
Let’s bring it on and get this season started!
I’m drooling like a Dawg for 9/3/11!!!

I agree that UGA needs to come out with more energy. I was at the bowl game last year in Memphis and from the moment we got there our fans had no buzz. The UCF fan base was loud with scripted chants an hour before kickoff and just wanted it more. It carried over to how the players played too. We have a huge advantage having 50,000+ tickets compared to the 6,000 Boise State has so the energy level should be great with Boise being ranked so high plus it being the first game with everyone getting a fresh start to have a great year.

Paul,
Break time is over. Get ready for school now and eat your cheerios. Perhaps your english class can teach you a couple of new words today. One would be respect, as in, to call fans of other teams dummies and stupid, is very easy to do behind a comuter screen, but only when one is really ready to confront those same people in the real world. Reality also is a nice word for you to learn. You are on a blog called the “Junkyard Blawg”. It is a UGA blog, so you should expect to see DAWG fans cheerings for their team. Although the journalist seems to go to great lengths most of the time to be negative about the DAWGS, the topics are still geared to have a decidedly slanted point of view about UGA. It is obvious that you do not care for UGA but the tech. blog is also available for you to cheer on your team. That is where you belong, not on a blog about UGA. And you might want to check in with the S and C coach over at tech. while you are at it. If you accidently use that mouth of yours to tell a fan of UGA that he needs to shut up and is stupid, out in public, you will need to know how to run or at least defend yourself and your point of view without the benefit of a protective computer screen to spout off behind. In other words, you might need to be a man and mature a little bit. Now go get your book bag and hop on the bus.

I was reading an interesting post from someone claiming “close to the Alabama program” who said that it was explained to him how Bama “legally” pays it’s players. Says that so called walk ons who are really just offspring of Bama boosters are paired up with big name players, (Julio was the example used), that provide cash, or credit cards for any expenses that player needs. Says that this particular booster was tied to the famous fishing trip, and spring break trips. There are no NCAA rules stating that a player cannot help another player, and that this has been going on for years at Bama. Don’t know that it’s true, but would not doubt it. They called it the “cash on the dresser technique”.

My predictions based entirely on nothing:
South Carolina wins the SEC East
Alabama wins the SEC West
Alabama easily defeats South Carolina
Alabama plays Oklahoma or Nebraska or FSU or Stanford for the NC
Dawgs finish 6-6, lose bowl game to Air Force
Richt is fired
UGA football continues to decline
Sad

Fact is that the D can only bail you out so many times. It doesn’t matter how good of shape they were in; everyone has tank and eventually it gets low and eventually empties. You cannot coninually ask the D to bail you out over and over and over again. The lack of offense took it’s toll plenty last season. Was the O solely to blame, no but they were the problem more often than not.

Hey Columbus Dawg…not exactly unique to Alabama. Seems to me it’s exactly what happened with the carpet guy, his son and Day-Rick Rogers that ended up at Tennessee. In fact in that case the ‘dad’ may have gone so far as becoming Day-Rick’s ‘guardian’…now that would be, if not unique, at least a new low…see that way he can funnel all the money he wants to his ’semi-adopted’ kid, just so long as UT keeps his ‘other son’ on scholarship – no matter if he plays or not.

In my opinion, UGA’s offense quit on Richt and the team after driving the ball 97-98 yards and not being allowed to go for it on 4th and maybe 6 inches.
If everyone remembers, Richt made a comment in the paper after the game that several of the players were very upset that they didn’t go for it and Richt’s sophomoric response was that they should have made it on 3rd down.
Not exactly the point and a bs way to say things about your team. That is one time Richt should have either kept his pie hole shut or put it another way like he normally does.
Anyway, I’ll now pass the plate since I am on here preaching!

If they “quit” because they disagree with the coach going for a high percentage score (after they all spent the week in the paer talking about how important it was to score first)…..they needed to turn in thier uniforms as soon as that game was over. You don’t quit becasue you don’t agree with a play a call.
And That wasn’t his response “about his team” when asked, that was what he said directly to the players, to make a point to them. “I said to them, if you wanted to make the down, you should have done it there (2nd, 3rd) down, when we ran the play. Don’t get stuffed and then run over here wanting me to bail you out and go for it”. or to that effect. Richt has his fault, and perhaps you disagree that it was a point worth making, or in the timing, or even that he should not have shared that discussion when asked directly about it, but have you really ever seen him to act sophomoric?

OK, here’s the deal…we’ve got a ton of questions going into the season – running backs, O-line, replacing AJ, is the defense really that much improved, is Murray up to the ‘big’ games, etc. – most of us would like to believe that the answer to most, if not all, of those will be in the affirmative, in which case we should not only be competitive but have a very successful season. If not, then we’re in for some disappointments. What gets me is that there are way too many posters around here that hang ‘dawg’ on their moniker that chose to be negative in their thinking. What’s up with that? Is it that you have decided that if you lower your expectations enough you can’t be disappointed? Or even that you can have the satisfaction of saying ‘I told you so’? Is it that you possess all the football knowledge of the Western World and are convinced that Richt and his staff are not up to the task and want to see to it that you speed their dismissal? (That one strikes me as the same kind of thinking as Republicans working to tank the economy to ensure Obama’s being beat in the next election…in other words you’d rather see Georgia lose just so you can say ‘I told you so’ about Richt and hire ‘who the hell knows’) Or are you ‘dawgies’ just using the ‘handle’ as part of your ‘troll cover’.
Regardless, I’ve always felt that this was my team right or wrong and while I may get just as upset at things along the way, I recognize that open criticism of the coaches, players, program – anything associated with the team and the school – only serves to hurt morale and recruiting and encourage the Techies, the gaytors, the barners and all the other ‘orange-clad’ enemies…so why the hell do it? Oh yeah, so you can say ‘I told you so’.
Get behind the guys. There’ll be time enough for ‘I told you so’s’ later, but only if needed. Fact is I’m looking forward to rubbin’ some ‘doom-sayers’ noses in the biggest pile of Dawg-do I can find before this season is over – and hopefully after the first two weeks.

I agree with you Dirty Dawg. I will go to my grave being a UGA fan. It is more than just football to me. It is a source of pride to me. And I really don’t care what other fans of other teams say. CMR is and will remain a source of pride for UGA and a symbol of how to treat kids the right way. I would bet you can’t find one player on that team now that doesn’t have respect for CMR.
