Looking for the silver lining as UGA spreads the red

A look at Georgia uniforms of the past. (Heritage Sports Art)

A look at Georgia uniforms of the past. (Heritage Sports Art)

So I return from vacation to find Mark Richt’s Dogs now a Top 20 team with opening-game uniforms that look like something out of a Japanese kiddie show.

Actually, I don’t mind the red on red aspect of Georgia’s Nike Pro Combat uniforms so much but I just don’t like that jersey, especially the black on the sleeves. However, the helmet actually comes close to being pretty cool; I just wish the red stripe wasn’t so wide. I could see those helmets — or a variation — brought back out for a future bowl game or something with our traditional uniforms.

Discussing the Pro Combats over the weekend with several fans, both young and old, I found a recurring theme that most would have preferred something a bit closer to a retro look (silver helmets, red jerseys, silver britches), but throwbacks is not really what the whole Pro Combat thing is about. Still, as my old schoolmate Rusty said on Facebook, “Well, they’re hideous, true. But I can live with them for one game.”

(For a closer look at the poster of the evolution of Georgia’s uniforms, go here. Artwork courtesy of Scott Sillcox. Each of the 15 actual pieces of original watercolor artwork used in the UGA uniforms poster are available for sale here.)

Meanwhile, I have to say I was a little surprised to see Georgia ranked No. 19 in the Associated Press preseason poll — the only team on the list coming off a losing record — but Boise State at No. 5 (making the Broncos the highest-ranked season-opening opponent for the Dogs since 1965) and South Carolina at No. 12 is about what I expected.

As Neil “Hondo” Williamson of the Georgia broadcast team points out, dating back to the first AP poll in 1936, Georgia has never opened the season against two top 20 teams (or top 25 for that matter). So in terms of how highly ranked the opponents are, 2011 will mark the most difficult opening two games in Bulldogs history (though I’ve heard several fans make a good case for the opening tandem in 1982 when Georgia faced defending national champion Clemson and a Steve Young-led BYU team).

Estimations of how the Dogs will weather those first two games and the 10 regular season matches to follow are all over the place, ranging from Phil Steele’s prediction of Georgia winning the SEC East to Sports Illustrated predicting a 6-6 record.

Of course, such predictions are, like the preseason polls, nothing but guesswork, but if there’s anything even sillier, it’s preseason bowl projections. That doesn’t stop various sports media outlets from trotting them out, though, and College Football News has Georgia playing Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl in its “way too early” projection, while both of ESPN’s bowl projections have the Dogs in the Capital One Bowl, with Mark Schlabach pitting Georgia against Ohio State and Brad Edwards pegging Nebraska as the opponent.

That’s getting way ahead of all the games, of course, in a season where even die-hard UGA loyalist Loran Smith isn’t sure what sort of team Richt is going to field but is cautiously optimistic, noting, “this team could play really well the first two weeks and begin the season 0-2. The good news is that, in the Butts-Mehre building, you won’t find anybody who believes that will happen.”

Neither do I. How about you?

I can’t wait until you are put out to pasture, Bill. You are more a fan of a bygone era than you are a fan of today’s football Bulldogs. Kids today don’t care about what happened when you were a kid. About the uniforms, I think Richt said it best when he said they aren’t normal uniforms but this isn’t a normal game. I could care less what they wear for one game. If this was their new official, every game uniforms, then I’d be upset about it. Frankly, I’m more offended by Nike calling them “combat” uniforms. Who came up with that? Kellen Winslow Jr? Anyone who compares football to war has never experienced war. Most injuries suffered on the football field heal and don’t require a prosthesis. I realize Nike just thinks it sounds cool, but don’t minimize what our true soldiers do for us every day.

Regarding our #19 ranking, I’d just say that ALL preseason rankings are pretty meaningless, whether we are talking about a #1 ranking or #25. The only use is to help TV sell more advertising spots.

I think the 5 times we started with South Carolina and Tennessee under Ray Goff were the toughest.

Starting with tennessee, texas A7M and Clemson in 1980 looked rough on paper.

I know these two teams are ranked, but they are not traditional powers of college football. And if we lined the teams up for drafting, I don’t think many of the BS boys make the start at UGA. With the home field both games, with the talent and the fire I see this year, I’m all in.

I believe that from what we have heard from the practices that the Georgia Bulldog Football team has returned to form. Now that being said, the comparisons to Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, and Oregon, some of Boise’s bragging points, well, simply do not compare. The conferences don’t compare, the speed on the defenses don’t compare, the overall team makeups don’t compare. I am glad that the Boise folks have already marked down a “W” by this game, but boy are they gonna be sad sacks when they have to travel back to potato land.

If we have not been scammed on how the Dawg D has improved, then I have to compare the potential to some of the better Defenses of Richt’s tenure. Now the 2005 D was not all that great in my opinion, what with the Auburn fiasco, and the West Virginia Suger Bowl flop, but was more than good enough to stuff Boise’s attack. I know this is a different Boise team, but it will still be smaller and slower than the higher rated SEC players they will face. While it is true that Virginia Tech and Oklahoma would easily hang with the worst team since the Goff days, they flat out would not hang with an up to par UGA defense.

Brag all you want Boise, but the Dome ain’t gonna be friendly to you on the 3rd.

I wouldn’t go so far as the ‘gravy’ man, Bill, but you could use a bit of updating on your perspective about stuff. It’s great to be nostalgic, and to recall with fond memories good times past, but to not ‘get it’ when it comes to being able to ‘adapt’ to change simply is being stubbornly simple-minded. You remind me of business people that hire high-priced architects or advertising agencies for their success and talent in design and recognizing, or establishing, trends, then nit-pic over the most idiotic stuff…’you don’t like the black on the sleeves’? Jeesh man, as Richt said, ‘get over it’…I mean if the players like it, and it gets ‘em even more fired up, then why not – it ain’t like the football Gods are gonna strike us with lightening or something.

I happen to think that this ‘pro-combat’ look is as good as any I’ve seen, not that I’m interested in making a permanent change mind you, but to not like it because it’s ‘all-red’ is to fail to notice that virtually every school we play – Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and more – have at one time or another used their ‘core’ color for both the jersey and the pants, so what’s the big deal. Trends in style – athletic or otherwise – start with the young. If they like it, then it’ll fly – unless of course, we stink out the place come 9/3, in which case, like the red tops and black pants we used in that Florida game some years back (we looked like the Red Coat Band, and played football like ‘em as well), we won’t be using ‘em again any time soon.

All dawg fans want to be 2-0 after first two weeks of the season but 1-1 is more realistic. SC game will be the tougher of the two. Of course, beating SC is more impt than beating BSU. Truthfully, no one really knows how good this GA team is this year. They have good key position players and from what we read a lot of potential from younger players. Based on last seasons performance if they can reduce critical turnovers, stop opponents from making big plays, both passing and running, and run the ball, they can be a good team and capable of playing in the dome for the SEC Championship.

Then again, haunted by performance of seasons past, that creeping doubt seems to loom close by. If CMR can do complete turn around from 2010 record he deserves to be SEC coach of the year and contender for national honors. Wouldn’t that be a hoot.

Assuming there are no critical injuries, if UGA settles for anything less than 2-0 to start the season, they’ve already lost the season. After last year, its fine for fans to be a bit worried, but even in a terrible year, UGA was in range to win each game and not far from having a fairly good year despite everything that went wrong.

No matter how many times Boise St. finishes with a one or zero loss season, I’ll never accept a team like UGA losing to them. The Dawgs have plenty of talent to handle what Boise throws at them, so coaching will be at fault of the Dawgs fail. With South Carolina, Spurrier or not, give me a break that a 9-5 team last year from Columbia is so special that the Dawgs shouldn’t expect to be the better team. South Carolina has indeed gotten better talentwise, but they aren’t some sort of legendary juggernaut. C’mon Dawgs – this can be a big year if you strive for and meet the expecations you should have for yourselves.

If anybody is interested, fox sports rates our regular season uniforms as number one, I am assuming in the NCAA, due to things like tradition and how well they are put together color wise. There is way too much concern over a uniform UGA will only be wearing for one game. If the kids playing in those uniforms do their thing, the uniforms will be remembered more for that, then any style statement they are suppose to make for Nike.

Dear lord will you people quit complaining about the uniforms!!! It’s the Chick-fil-A Kickoff. It’s two highly recognizable programs on national TV. This is not some publicity stunt like the “Black Outs”. This is Nike being a major contributor to the game asking it’s two participants (who both wear Nike equipment anyway) to wear it’s product on the field for one game. We ask ourselves ( or convince ourselves) that this year will be all different and better….and hope that it is….but at the same time, what in 9 months going by is STILL there that caused us to go 6-7. Not bad luck, but real stuff like not being able to open holes for the running game or not being able to stop folks from running up the gut on us for 7,8 10 yards. The real stuff that wins and loses games? What’s left over from last year that’s still there? A lack of talent? A lack of depth? Have the coach’s rethought things?

Bill, you are still a goober. What i cant get over is this…….for a team (UGA) to have as many diehard fans as we do, there are so many negative people on the uga blogs. If you dont like us, then go fck yourselves! I’m very optimistic on our season. Have any of you morons actually looked at our players?? Do you people not get that we have a DC that is starting his second season. We had our learning curve last year for our defense. Look for them to be much better. Murray is a year older, our starting five on offensive line are pretty good. We do have to pray that we dont have any bad injuries. We have no depth there. that will be what gets us if anything. We no longer have Caleb or Waushaun. Those two contributed to the bad attitudes we had last year on the team. The whole team morale will be better without those two thugs. We have a great placekicker. The only other thing we have that might be a liability other than no depth at O line is Mike Bobo. If our players can overcome him, we will be just fine. Look at our LB’s, look at our D Line. Our secondary will look much better because we finally have some players who can get pressure on the QB. The Dawgs will be fine….look for them to make a second trip to the Dome in December. And once again, to all the naysayers…..leave the UGA blogs alone, we dont need it. Go pleasure yourselves!! This is going to be a good year for the us

Uniforms: Agree completely on the helmet…it’d be nicer with a smaller stripe. It does have potential and I like the DAWGS print in red on black above the facemask alot better than the current one that doesn’t stand out at all. The pants are stock issue that anyone could just purchase at nike.com. They could’ve done more with that jersey if they wanted to make money selling it. Pete, we don’t think that the Boise State game will be close. I’ve said all along that UGA will beat Boise State 35-14. I don’t get this love affair with Boise State. Who do they play? Nobody. You can’t count beating a Virginia Tech team that lost to, I believe, Jacksonville State the next week. They are coming to try and play big boy football in the SEC which they haven’t been able to do in the past. This year will be no different. Get out of your mind the Georgia team that was 6-7 last year and lost 4 close games. This will be a totally different team than last year. Bigger, faster, stronger, more athletic with more experience than last year.

This is not Nike U…JUST SAY NO TO NIKE….There are much more credible companies out there UGA could do business with pertaining to uniforms.

There are a lot of historians on here daily bashing UGA. If there is a sport at the amateur level that changes more than college football does in one year for a school, I don’t know what it is. Kids graduate, leave, quit or are dismissed on every team in the NCAA, and teams improve and fall down each and every year. Each year is a relatively new beginning for each team that plays the sport. Statistics from the previous year and years gone by, mean very little for the following year. Right now, every college team in the NCAA is 0-0. Some might want to wait a few weeks before bashing UGA or crowning their team, the new NC at least.

Realistically, both games could go either way. UGA is at home for both, even though one is at the dome. The dome will have to be DEAFENING for a HUGE NEEDED ADVANTAGE AND I KNOW IT WILL BE!

UGA had USC beat last year IN Columbia and without Green and others but we fumbled the go-ahead touchdown. This year UGA defense shoud be as good as theirs or better, if we had them beat last year at HOME and with UGA at home this year, I say UGA is the FAVORITE BABY!

2 HARD games could lose both, could win both. I am not sure about Boise, but I think UGA wins a hardfought game with SC by taking over in the 4th quarter. If we do not make mistakes against Boise, I say we MANHANDLE THEM IN THE 2nd half and score late to win the game on a long run after the catch by Crowell. Matter of fact, I say Crowell dominates the game, we keep their offense off the field and our D rested and dominate the 2nd half. If we use that same pattern against SC, we go 2-0 without turnovers and if Crowell can handle the load. We need Samuel in there too so we dont work Crowell too hard.

We are gonna need him to run on LSU, ARKANSAS OR BAMA in the SEC CHAMPIONSHIP BABY!

Run Bobo Run and that also MEANS runs by the backs after the catch! Short passes to the backs after the receivers have spread the D thin and they are isolated with a linbacker to beat then off to the races! You compute that Bobo? Think Herschel…..Crowell can catch that rock too!

War Dang Dawg,
Newsflash! If you took all of the rednecks out of the state of Georgia, you’d be left with no one outside of metro Atlanta other than people of color. Does Florida have their share? Yes, they do, but Georgia is WAY out in front…..and most of the UGA faithful are proud of it.

I still don’t see how Boise St can be ranked so high – they lost all of their D-Backs and most of their top receiving corp from last year. UGA (along with any top 25 team with a decent QB) should be able to light them up with the pass. And any top 30 Defense should be able to stop their really good QB – with the receiving corp BS has this year. So – UGA wins this one handedly.

Flat Tire, either one of those guys would suit me just fine. In my memory, Georgia has never landed a proven head coach from another major program. Other schools do it routinely. Look at Alabama -hiring away Bear Bryant, Gene Stallings, and Nick Saban is as good as it gets.

If schools with lesser tradition like South Carolina and Florida can hire the likes of Lou Holtz, Urban Meyer, and Steve Spurrier, there’s no reason Georgia can’t do the same. It’s time for this program to shed its small time mentality. The rest of the SEC is passing us by.

What difference does it make what the uniforms look like? Dawgs are Dawgs no matter what they wear. I see a 9–4 season coming including the bowl game if we don’t have too many injuries and our guys can stay out of jail. Ga.- 42 Boise – 28. “GO DAWGS”!

If we have any semblance of a running game we will score points against anyone. But the season will hinge on how well the defense can keep the opponents from scoring. We had difficulty stopping people when we had to late in the game. If the defense can turn it around then we can have a very good season.

To Flat Tire on I-95 in Jacksonville –
You made the statement “VT couldnt (sic) even beat James Madison High school the next week”. Many people have mentioned this as if VT was some weakling – remember your glories doggies got beat by UCF. But also – does that mean that Michigan is a weakling team because the lost to Appalachian St a couple of years ago? Or (using your logic) was FSU much better than Florida last year because the beat the gators 31-7? Or that Clemson nearly beat (should have – Clemson kicker missed a 32 yarder that would have sealed the game) the national champs Auburn? Does that mean that Clemson (who went 6-7 last year) was just as good or better than Auburn? Once again – using your logic with VT – I would have to say “yes”. So be careful when giving comparisons based on a lose here and there.

however – They didn’t quite lose *all* of the DBs. One returning really good safety and 1 CB with some experience. The other safety listed has been in the program for awhile. It’s not like last year, when they returned 20 of 22 starters.

*S George Iloka 3L 6-3 216 (63 T, 3 TFL, 2 INT)
CB Jamar Taylor 2L 5-11 194 (35 T 3.5 TFL 2 INT)

VT had one defensive lineman returning in 2010, and he had made only 8 starts. No safeties (their Rover had 4 starts), and 1 of the returning CBs had only 2 starts. They had to learn on the job. It doesn’t explain their offensive problems, though.

I’ll tell you one thing right now, if Richt goes below 8-4 with THIS easy schedule, he should be fired immediately!! Shoot, if he gets less than 10 wins than he should be fired. No Bama, No LSU, NO Arkansas. Tennessee, Florida, and Auburn will ALL be down. Tech and Vandy will be horrible. The only teams that are even remotely menacing are South Carolina, Boise, and MSU: all of which are still winnable. If Richt can’t rebound from last season with THIS schedule, then he clearly can’t motivate this generation of player in which case he must go. Shoot you give David Greene & Co. this schedule and they’d go 12-0. Get it done Dawgs! Enough of the excuses.

Your comments about some of Georgia’s opponents last year ,specifically Colorado and Central Florida, after TCU moves to the Big Least ,both Colorado and Central Florida would be the toughest teams on your schedule. Join a real conference where you have to play tough games back to back. this year after the Georgia game Boise does not play another ranked team until November 12 TCU. Your schedule is a joke ,you basically have to play two tough teams and then you want to claim a spot in the BCS . So you better show up in the dome vs. UGA because if you lose you can kiss the BCS goodbye.you cn host Ga.Tech in the Humanitarian Bowl,if Ga.Tech can win 6 games this year.

1) Richt is playing it pretty close to his chest. Even the most rabid of us aren’t talking national titles. Everyone seems to be fairly sober (in attitude at least) about the team.
2) The players seem overwhelmingly positive and express a pride about playing for UGA.
3) I haven’t heard Richt call a practice early one time, and they are tackling to the ground.
4) This is a team with a lot to prove.

Don’t know and don’t care about the record or the bowl or the polls!! This will be a greatly improved team. I am excited to see these young players achieve there dreams.

UGA’s defense will greatly influence the outcome of the game. It is going to be lost or won on the line, and our defense is stronger, faster, and a lot bigger there. Boise will be starting a tackle that must protect their QB’s blindside and he has never started before. Their center, is coming off a major leg injury and will give away almost 60 pounds and 6 inches in height to either one of UGA’s nose tackles. If UGA controls the line, their defense can control Boise’s offense and that will be the key. Make their QB move around all day with happy feet and the game belongs to the DAWGS.

Improved chazzo ?

We have to go back 58 years to 1953 to find one of our teams who lost more than the 7 games we lost last year.

No wonder you don’t want to put up a record for us 2011-2012, that and the 10 CUPCAKES we play. You see ? Putting up a record, would then obviously beg the question, just whom was it we beat this season, wouldn’t it ? Yesterday we all read with horror how Mark Richt has done the last 4 years compared to teams with LESS TALENT as judged by the Scout.com # 11 ranking average the last 5 years making up this team this season. Mark Richt’s record vs teams finishing in the AP Poll Top 10 and Mark Richt’s losses to teams not finishing in the AP Poll Top 25, even, including their win over Mark Richt. Makes you wonder where such a person came up with such an idea. Judge a “coaching staff” put together by Mark Richt and for whom he and he alone is responsible compared to the truly great teams and compared to the truly lousy teams. All 10 years, it has been the same. It is not a 4-year deal on this one of the worst coaches in America beating teams finishing in the AP Poll Top 10 and losing to teams not even finishing in the AP Poll Top 25, even with their win over us.

3-9 vs teams finishing Top 10 AP Poll all 10 years Mark Richt
10 more losses to teams not even finishing that season in the AP Poll Top 25 Mark Richt

Improved, sir, would be to actually beat teams who then finish in the AP Poll Top 10 instead of losing them all.

Improved, sir, would be to actually not lose to lousy teams who even with their win over Mark Richt’s “coaching staff” they still did not even finish that season in the AP Poll Top 25 even.

11-3 is not improved then. It is just more of the same with no significant team beat, yet again, and probably with a loss to a team who doesn’t even finish in the AP Poll Top 25 as usual too.

Mediocre describes where we have been, where we are and where we will be. And, it better not include a loss to Boise State.

If 11-3 is mediocre your never going to be happy, you can rant and rail all you want no one wins them all, 10 cupcakes really we have a 11 game season and play UF, USC and Boise all in the top 25 do the math where do you get 10 cupcakes…take your stats and head on back to Bugville Thomas. And what will you do if we do lose to Boise..start saying bad things about the coaching staff, the team, withhold all the millions you give to the school, hold your breath till you turn blue?

Well Boisy fans would probably point out that a 6-7 UGA team lost its top receiving corp along with all its running backs, its best player on defense and yet it hasn’t stopped UGA fans about predicting national championships and a rout against them.

Couldn’t disagree more. Dooley wasn’t a great coach, but he was pretty good. Much better than Goff or Richt. They didn’t have two guaranteed win cupcake games every year when Dooley was coaching. Nonconference games included Clemson, South Carolina (before they joined the SEC) and Tech every year, and Georgia played UCLA, BYU, Pitt, Michigan, TCU, Texas A&M, and FSU among others. No Idaho States or La.-La’s on Dooley’s calendar.

And the best part of all: 17-7-1 against Florida. And that includes wins over some darn good Florida teams. He denied the Gators SEC Championships at least 4 times that I can remember.

That’s my kind of coach. I’d take Dooley over Richt any day.

As much as I agree that we need to be thinking football rather than uniforms, one thing that occurred to me. I hope that their ‘dress rehearsal’ today includes wearing these new unis…I’d hate to think we could end up with a ‘massive’ wardrobe malfunction on national television – now that would be embarrassing. Oh yeah, and they probably need to wash ‘em at least once before wearing to make sure they don’t fade – who knows we could end up with a washed-out color of red…kinda like Tennessee’s orange that looks as it it’s been left out in the sun too long. Of course the worst ‘wardrobe malfunction’ on that night would be to lose in the damn things.

There’s a lot of tough talk here with a lack of knowledge and even minimum research. BSU/UGA 2005 is ancient history and doesn’t apply. BSU has been on an upward trajectory for several years now, which means bigger, faster players. You put this together with the only caoch to have won the Bear Bryant award twice, and it’s a powerful combination. Also, BSU’s QB crashed in that game and was personally responsible for about a 1/2 dozen turnovers. Who wouldn’t get creamed if that happened. Last year, 5 mos before the Labor Day game, VT hired a coach to do a thorough play x play analysis of BSU in an attempt to figure out their “system”. VT had NC aspirations, took that game very seriously, and they were as prepared as they could be. That’s one reason it ended up being so close. Check the stats. They lost that game on a Monday night, then had a 4-hr bus trip home, then had school. The loss was devastating, and 5 days hardly gave them enough time to practice, let alone recover from the loss. It’s no wonder that a good James Madison was able to take advantage of the situation. The dawgs could be in a similar situation, but with a more difficult 2nd opponent. BSU with Moore as a freshman QB, beat Oregon in 2008 on their home field, one the toughest home fields in the country. After that, don’t you think Oregon would have been prepared for revenge in the 2009 opener in Boise? They didn’t get a first down until 3Q, and LaGarrete Blount was held to minus 5 yds rushing. BSU made a lot of first game mistakes, including several fumbles on snap, or the score wouldn’t have been so close. I’m sure CMR and the team know what they’re up against, and will be prepared. And I doubt they’re expecting a walk in the park.

WDE cannot even count to 11-3. Quote WDE to me ? Mark Richt has addressed, every issue. Great Scott. Is Mike Bobo the offensive coordinator ? Is Bryan McClendon the RB coach ? Did we recruit a fullback the last 6 recruiting classes, I missed somewhere ? There is a single player who plays the forward pass in our entire secondary ? Do we have a hole in the OL in the starting 5, and is there anyone behind them ? Were there now 26 players who would have played vs Boise State who no longer on even on the roster. All those 26, whom Mark Richt is given great credit for bringing here, none of them are Mark Richt’s “coaching staff’s” responsibility for running off this roster ? Will we not lose the game number 11 in the 11 years this season of Mark Richt and his “coaching staff” to a team who does not end up in the AP Poll Top 25, like Florida for example ? Will we beat Florida or go 2-9 vs Florida his 11 years here ? Are we better than South Carolina in game 2, or will it be not a winning record vs The SEC East the last 6 consecutive seasons the night after the game 2 ? Oh, yeah he has really fixed things. All issues fixed. Hands us all yet another wardrobe malfunction with lies that all the players just love looking like a Japanese cartoon CLOWN SUIT. Will not have beat any team finishing in the AP Poll Top 10 yet again this season. Have our wide receivers just awesome out there.
