Welcome to Saturday. Three weeks from today Mark Richt’s boys will tee it up in the Georgia Dome against the Broncos.
If you didn’t order tickets to that game before it sold out and didn’t sign up for the season tickets that arrived in mailboxes this week but you still hanker to see the Dawgs play this season, you’re in luck.
A limited number of tickets to three of Georgia’s home football games — Coastal Carolina on Sept. 17, New Mexico State on Nov. 5 and Kentucky on Nov. 19 — will go on sale to the general public beginning Monday, August 15, at 9 a.m. All tickets are $45 and can be purchased online or by calling the Athletic Association ticket office 1-877-542-1231.
All single-game tickets ordered will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis and mailed within 10 days of the order being submitted, the athletic association says.
Meanwhile, I went to the funeral for a longtime dear friend’s mom in Athens Friday, and it was a lovely service. It was, of course, a typical Athens funeral in that the first words I heard from one of the surviving sons were … “What about Richt?”
You gotta love Athenians and their 24/7 devotion to UGA.
Speaking of Athens, I’ll be over there a couple of days while I’m off on vacation next week (with my fingers crossed in hopes that by the time I return Georgia will have a healthy tailback in good standing). But before I go let’s clear out some Junkyard Mail. …
Our old pal Cuz wants me to ask Bulldog fans which they’d rather have, a win over Florida or winning the SEC East. Says Cuz: “Tough one for me because I, like you, remember the total domination we used to have over the Gators. I went to maybe seven JAX games before Florida won one. We were dumbfounded, then just started laughing at the Florida fans who went out of their gourds. Now I understand. But to me, winning the East has got to be the most important step for this team and for Coach Richt. Both would be wonderful, but if I have to choose one, it will be winning the East.”
I have to agree, Cuz. As much as I would love for Georgia to beat Florida this season (and if not this year, when?), I’d much rather have the Bulldogs returning to the Georgia Dome on Dec. 3. I hated the losses to the Gators in 2002 and 2005, but I wouldn’t have traded winning the East for a win in Jacksonville either year.
Dawgtired writes: I’m sending this in hopes that you will unveil the scam Boise State is trying to pull on America. Their plight has been well documented regarding the “little man” being denied a chance to win the national championship in the current BCS system. I despise the BCS system not because it keeps the “little man” down, but because it doesn’t allow more teams to settle it on the field of play. This brings me to the Boise scam. No one argues that BS is a good team. I feel they are talented and extremely well coached. Much has been said about their success recently against the “big boys.” No dispute from me. However, while many naysayers point out that BS would struggle in a major conference, the grind of a long season is only part of the explanation. You see, BS’ success should be credited to the genuis athletic director for scheduling these games with the big boys. Nothing to lose and everything to gain for the program. Much has also been made about BS really only having to win ONE tough game to go undefeated each year. But let’s look closer. Yes, they have beaten Oregon twice, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and TCU. Each of those wins had the same thing in common. BS was smart enough to schedule these as opening games of the season or they were bowl wins. Each allowed at least 4 weeks to scheme and prepare. Some allowed 8 months prep time. This year UGA draws BS in the season opener. BS coaches and players know that their season and respectability depends on winning this game. Is there any doubt they have been preparing for 8 months? UGA on the other hand is more concerned about the SEC title. Please someone, ANYONE, schedule Boise in the middle of their season or late in the season when they can’t devote every hour of prep to you! May John Jenkins welcome Kellen Moore to his senior season. Thanks, Bill.
You make an interesting point, though I should note that Gene Bleymaier, Boise State’s “genius” athletic director and the father of the Smurf Turf, was fired this week in relation to the school’s NCAA troubles. But while I think, yes, Richt and his staff probably are (and should be) more concerned with the SEC schedule than anything else, UGA scheduled Boise State in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game for a reason … to regain the national football spotlight. I think the Dogs are taking the Broncos plenty seriously and certainly hope they’ve also put the past few months to good use.
Big Bad Brad writes: Bill, what’s your take on Texas A&M and SEC expansion? I don’t really see why everyone’s getting so excited about the prospect of the third- or fourth-best Texas program joining the best college football conference. I think the SEC is just fine as it is. You?
I think the SEC should add schools only if it can expand its footprint and add television markets and revenue. While the Aggies may not be the top program in their state, they’re the one that would fit best with the SEC West and adding A&M would get the conference into a key television market. So if they want to join up, I think the SEC should take them. Now, who else should be added to balance the league? A lot of folks like Florida State, and the Seminoles are certainly a marquee program, but I think a more valuable addition to the SEC would be Virginia Tech, which would get the conference into the D.C. TV market (where, my son notes, conference games currently aren’t available). I wrote about this subject last year when the SEC and A&M were flirting, and you can read those discussions here and here and here.

As far as, Fire MR – his post is dumber that Peas. No meaningful discussion, just a stupid comment that no one that supports the Georgia football team with money and travel agrees with.
And the best for last, davsag8r, predicting a score in August is the dumbest of all. The game is the last weekend in October and right now we have’nt a clue who would be hurt, the weather, or a ton of other intangible items that could affect the game. So you win the dumb award!
My guess is that the three posters are not Georgia fans, with all three of them being the same troll.

Georgia could have both a win over Florida and be the division champion. If Georgia is going to beat Florida this is definitely the year. Transition time in Gainesville makes all their games up for grabs.

As much as I would love to beat FL I’d have to go with winning the SEC East. I’m sad to say that losing to FL has become somewhat predictable the last couple of decades so another loss at this moment in time doesn’t sting as much as it did before.

The way we beat Bosie St. is just like we did Hawaii a few years ago — Tough and physical play from the defense. Wear them down. They may have a good offense, but I tend to think we can beat their defense better than they can ours. Win the east and beat Florida to leave no doubt!

The best thing to ever happen to UGA was SEC expansion. Without Expansion UGA would Never win the SEC. Instead of being the 6th or 7th best team in the SEC the Dawgs are the 3rd of 4th team in the SEC East. I makes mid-tier SEC sound better.

I say this because with Richt and his ineptness it will never happen. Personally I would like UGA to win four of its key games and then I would forgive Richt for folding on any of the others. Don’t worry, with Richt there ain’t a snowballs chance of it happening.
If Richt’s life depended on it he could not beat all of these four teams, even if UGA said you can lose all the rest and keep your job: Boise, South Carolina, Auburn and the Richt killer FLORIDA.

Georgia is a bunch of losers. All these posts are just par for the course. They think they can win every gaame and always belittle their opponents. The boise guy was very respectful and the inevitable rednecks emerged. They can only be civil and respectful for a short time before their true trash side comes out. There is absolutely no evidence that georgia will be any good this year other than their wussy schedule. I think boise outcoaches them and wins 30-17.

tom, it’s highly possible that Boise outcoaches us. Man for man we should equal or best them. I respect them for being disciplined and well coached. They are probably smarter than us man for man, just my opinion. In the end it’s our atheletic ability vs their ingenuity. I don’t have a clue as to who will win. My caveman instinct says we wear them out in the end, however David and Goliath is a distinct possibility.

@mobile dawg. Tunnel vision or recent evidence. Like myself and many other posters have pointed out there is no evidence that uga has the normal talent the second provides. I don’t care what your last recruting classes have been. Boise has proven time and time again they can play physical with the best of them. Uga putting themselves on this elite athletic pedestal is dangerous because all that does is inflate the egos of the players and inspire boise. Uga has been an average team for the past three seasons and lost the one player that kept them in games last year. There is a great chance richt has lost this team and can’t reverse it mentally. Boise on the other thans has all the mental edge for this. Uga has all the pressure.

Boise has had the advantage of being the hunter in their past few BCS games. As Tom has rightly pointed out, Boise has been inspired and the other team has had presure. However, I think the roles will be reversed this year. UGA has had 3 straight mediocre years and Boise has won 4 straight against big time teams. Its possible #7 Boise will come into the game thinking they can win against a mediocre team with big time tradition (from the SEC, no less). While UGA is playing this as an opportunity to show everyone that they’re back. If this scenario plays out, UGA should win with superior talent. Of course, talent, even inspired talent, can be overcome with turnovers and freak plays and I’m certain Boise will take advantage of every opportunity. Should be fun.

Either a win against Florida or The SEC East?
Neither one is happening and after the draft, departures, suspensions, transfers, injuries, poor coaching, a 6-6 to 7-5 season is the course for the Bulldawg Nation and everyone is hoping that CMR is still the head coach at the Clark County Correctional facility or better know as Georgia Football. Add to that, the only decent coach left on the staff is your DC and his choking techniques and he will be gone after this season.

It is so funny to read these uninformed UGA fans spinning a game plan and hoping the Boise St team is overlooking, undermanned and expects to Boise to play below their standards because the Might Georgia Bulldawgs have the “Dream Team” to fill in major voids at Wide Reciever, Running Back, DL, DE, and the so called great DB’s at UGA are going to shut down everyone they play.
What a laugh…keep dreaming and after two opening season losses we will all sit back and watch that ship keep sinking..and let the jokes about Auburn keep coming..I guess you Dumb UGA fans believe Danny Sheridan has the witness and the bagman, and that someone is going to spill some magic beans about how we keep getting all these players from everywhere including out of your back yard. What is this JUNK that Boise State has proven it ?
31 games vs 6 BCS Conferences
8 wins
25 percent winning percentage
What Boise State has proved, is that (1) The NFL is right in only having 15 Boise State players to 45 Bulldogs (2) Rivals is right that Boise State has 10 games of 12 for 2011 vs teams averaging # 81 team every week except for TCU and UGA (3) Scout.com is right that Boise State averages the # 69 recruiting class for all of 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 and (4) Scout.com and Rivals are right that only Kellen Moore 4-Star 2007 is the only Boise State 5-Star or 4-Star player on the entire roster for 9/3 while UGA has 51 either 5-Star or 4-Star and that there are 21 Top 100 UGA Bulldogs to none for Boise State.
32-18.
0-5 then vs The SEC.

@tom: “Boise has proven time and time again they can play physical with the best of them.”
That is clearly not true. Most of their schedule every year is a joke. Boise has had some good wins, the best one coming against OK in the bowl game where they had everything that could possibly go right, do so, and successfully ran several trick plays defying probabilities. BUT, good for them. They were (are) well-coached. They play really smart and run schemes on offense and defense that fit their players.
What they no longer have is any element of surprise. Georgia will be studying them with a fine-tooth comb.
Go back and look at the stats of the Va Tech game. Boise jumped on them 17-zip in the first qtr. when Va Tech was playing like the 22 stooges then hung on. Va Tech then turns around and loses to James Madison.
Boise can win if they play a perfect game and Georgia stinks it up. If Georgia plays well they may win easily. I think Georgia is more motivated and focused than they have been in years, and I think the same about the coaches. We’ll find out one way or the other in 3 weeks.
