New Dogs will find fan buzz can be awfully fickle

The heat got to big John Jenkins at the first practice. (Brant Sanderlin, / AJC)

The heat got to big John Jenkins at the first practice. (Brant Sanderlin, / AJC)

It’s been amazing to watch the fluctuations in the fan buzz for the two most anticipated members of Georgia’s Dream Team.

For much of the early summer we had the nervous nellies prematurely declaring Isaiah Crowell a “bust” on the basis of rumors he wasn’t giving his all in summer workouts.

But since camp started and the coaches and veteran players have been talking about how hard he practices, how quick he is and how he’s doing a good job of picking up the playbook, the buzz-o-meter has flipped and the excitement is building again.

The opposite seems to be the case with big John Jenkins, who had some heat-related issues the first practice and currently is running second on the depth chart to Kwame Geathers, with coach Rodney Garner saying that Jenkins is “a very talented big man, just very inconsistent. … He’s going to have to improve his fundamentals to play at this level.”

Suddenly you’ve got fans questioning whether Jenkins is really going to be another “Mount” Cody.

Here’s an idea: How about we wait and see what they actually do on the field in a real game before declaring either player a legend-in-the-making or a bust?

They’re both new to the lineup and no doubt will be eased in, sharing time with the more experienced players. That’s why Richard Samuel was moved back to tailback, which so far seems to be working out to the coaches’ satisfaction. And Geathers appears to have picked up where he left off in the spring, so it’s only right that Garner is letting Jenkins know he’s going to have to earn his playing time.

It’s way too early to be passing judgment on either Crowell or Jenkins.

Meanwhile, I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to seeing more of the good old toss sweep this season with big Bruce Figgins (6-foot-4, 274 pounds) leading the way at fullback. Put 240-pound Samuel behind him and, like Figgins said, “I think people will be a little intimidated by it. That’s 500 pounds moving right there. And Richard’s not slow at all. I have to speed up just to get going ahead of him because he’ll run up your back if you don’t. I think we’ll be able to move some people out of the way.”

Here’s hoping Mike Bobo uses that weapon wisely.

Totally agree Bill–let the kids get through more than 6 practices before we crown them king or write them off. They’ll learn, they’ll compete, and get better as they go. I’m still excited about both Jenkins and Crowell; can’t wait to see them line up in September.

And here’s another hoping that Mike Bobo uses all of our offensive weapons wisely. For the love of everything that is sacred, don’t send Carlton Thomas between the tackles on 3rd and 8!

Frankly, I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school decent people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while the inept Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

Just asking.

Here’s what will happen:
Richt will keep talking about how much better Crowell’s getting from now until opening day, then Crowell will start. I’ve seen it too many times. Once Richt makes his mind up, he doesn’t change it. Doesn’t mean Crowell’s improving, just Richt’s way of not giving him the position right away. Same with John Jenkins. Remember when Richt talked about that QB battle a few Springs ago and then anninted Murray, as we all expected, after Gray & Mettenberger beat Murray? Coach Richt makes his mind up early, and doesn’t change, regardless of how these guys perform. Lemay & Mason could play like Tom Brady from now until Sept 2, and Murray’s starting. Just the way Richt is. And that’s not a good thing. And we saw what happens when you go with your 3rd best option at a position, like Richt did with Murray last year, 6-7, winless against winning teams.

I actually think Samuel is a better more durable back like Lattimore. Samuel got 4.5 ypc as a starter, Lattimore was 4.8 ypc. Pretty close. Crowell was injury prone in high school and Samuel’s been tough. I think Samuel’s time at LB will prove to be the difference in his ability to read defenses.

This new offensive line signee from Maryland played in a Catholic school league. The lowest classification in Maryland. The highest classification in Maryland probably equates to AA in Georgia. This “Division B” of the Interscholastic League of which Boys Catholic is a member, equates to a JV league here in Georgia. The whole school has 600 students, and that’s K through 12. You think Marlon Brown has had trouble adjusting to the Bigs, wait till this kid hits town. It’s decisions such as these that make you wonder if Georgia really and truly wants to compete at the highest level.

You can bemoan Richt’s method and style of awarding positions if you wish. Most who know me, know I am no longer his great supporter but, he’s the coach and if he wishes to refrain from assigning a #1 until they prove their worth in a game so what? He’s the coach. I happen to agree with it. You have 3 guys that want it bad, give all a chance to prove it both in practice and in the game. He doesn’t have to “crown” a TB just because you think he should.

You guys claiming you can predict Bobos calls, I’m sure can, at the exact pace that ANY college football fan can predict thier own teams tendencies.

I’d be willing to bet if you looked at the play by play for the entire season, your count of the number of times Carlton Thomas ran up the middle on 3rd and long was well short of your perception. And I’d further be willing to bet it was on our side of the field where a TO would have been the worst thing possible. It also still puzzles me why folks who presumably understand the game and specifically how our offense has worked for 10 yrs, still pretend that the OC dictate exactly where the play is going on every down and distance.

Murray bailed out to the draw play when he saw no other options that he felt comfortable with, JUST LIKE Stafford did his first year.

SwimTeamer

Bill,

The running game was clocking last few games of 2009, averaged 250 a game. I think with Murray’s inability to run audible & hit on deep passes, South Carolina & Miss St. brought 8 in the box. Murray only hit 1 deep pass in those 2 games. So Figgins really isn’t the key piece here, it’s Murray, and Murray’s ability to run audible and hit on deep passes, like Joe Cox did so well late 2009.

I posted something similar on another blog earlier, but it bears repeating: Georgia has a full time coaching staff that watches every practice and every game, and the film of both. No one on here has anywhere close to that level of information.

Georgia averaged 32 points per game last year. Georgia could easily have won 2-3 more games if running backs had not fumbled or missed assignments. Bobo may be the worst O coordinator in the world, but based on the evidence I’ll take the other side of that argument.

His detractors are operating on very incomplete information.

Elsie

Richt and the rest of the staff saw them in every practice; yet, you think that your two hours of spectating means you know better than the coaches who should start.

That is an awful lot of hubris and that is a strange example to use since it was undoubtedly the right choice. Mason better than Murray? Idiotic. Also, I am willing to bet that Samuel starts against BS and they split time approximately equally, depending on what happens between now and then.

On G-Day, Lemay looked the best, then Mason, then Murray. Murray took a safety on the 1st play, didn’t score a td (oh yeah, B. Smith scored 1 on the 1 yard pass B. Smith turned into a TD). Murray missed on G-Day on EVERY DEEP PASS. Murray couldn’t RUN AUDIBLE on G-Day, backs had a terrible game. Mason threw more td’s than Murray over Spring this year. The Ga playbook was mighty small last year and the reason was ability and a 1st year QB. That’s not uncommon at any school I don’t blame Bobo for that and the look of it is predictability and to a degree it was but that wasn’t Bobo’s fault. I’ve heard enough from the armchair coaches out there who continue to blast Bobo for his play calling. It’s the execution of the play that make a coach either look like a genius, or a boob. In reality, fans criticize Bobo for his play calling, and they have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. Certain plays must be avoided when personnel packages are hindered by injuries, suspensions, etc. On other plays, a player misses an assignment, runs the wrong play, etc. The bottom line is Bobo will look like a genius if this OL blows open holes, and protects Murray. So until you have a knowledge of what is going on with the players, shut up! Bobo is one of our own, a true Dawg!

The odds of any RB developing into a 1000 yard season type of guy, is about 20 to 1, only 2 have done it since Richts been at Georgia. Crowell will have a hard time matching Moreno’s 1st season’s numbers, or even Ealey’s 5.7 ypc 2 years ago. You’ll likely see a guy that gets about 4.5 ypc score 4 td’s, and runs for 300 yards.

The Lattimore Show – Part Deux

Dont Miss It

Boise in ATL

August 9th, 2011
1:10 pm

Wow! All the hate toward UGA’s OC – Bobo.

Did’nt UGA average 32 points per game last season with a feshman QB – questionable O-Line, inconsistent and underachieving RB’s?

The issues last year – from my opinion- was a defense that was in transistion – a group of players that were not disciplined away from the field and on the field – which all effected the ability to turn this unit into a team. And one last important element was leadership – from players and coaches.

Nothing like 6-7 to provide clarity and enable the coaching staff to focus on the true issues as to why a program is underachieving.

“Team” was inconsistent – more of a rebuild last year in that UGA should have won 8 regular season games and won their bowl game = 9 wins.

So – what now?
I have to be impressed that CMR has changed S&C, let go players that were not “all in”, had a great recruiting class with very athletic kids that can impact the team – and moved personnel around to better the team.

So – what’s the payoff?
– no arrests this year
– new focus and energy for the team
– better leadership from players and coaches

All of this will mean better results on the field.

However, UGA starts off the season with back to back killer games – and UGA needs some like action to develop continuity due to the large amount of areas that are being upgraded.

So – I figure UGA will lose to Boise – and that game will improve the team – but will it be enough to be better than South Carolina???? I am not so sure – but we will find out!

The scary thing about South Carolina is that their Defense will be better this year – and the team, the staff – and Spurrier KNOW that they can beat Georgia – this is huge and has been South Carolina’s downfall for many years. Kind of like FLORIDA knows it can beat UGA – and have done so at will – even when UGA had the better team.

Nothing Could Be Finer

The scary thing about South Carolina is that their Defense will be better this year

Actually the scary thing about South Carolina is that their O-Line has shown improvement from last year.

Bad news for opposing defenses as we saw what Lattimore can do with a mediocre O-line last year.

My thoughts are that this Georgia team comes out of the tunnel this year with a better attitude and desire to win. I think they come out in better shape and stronger. I still say we have some new faces that need to prove themselves. Some old ones who need to prove themselves. I think this team will be a little faster. I think this team will be thin at spots. They will have a chip on their shoulder. They heard and read all the same things we have. All that said, the schedule sets up nice, even coming out of the gate 0-2. All the heavy lifting will be done by then. They could go 10-2 or even 9-3 . That would bring Richt back. Let’s just see.

If UGA can gain a real sense of confidence and urgency, I see a reason to expect big things out of the offense and defense. I’d rank biggest team concerns as #1) Mike Bobo play calling, #2) O-Line depth, #3) consistent D-Line pressure, and #4) Murray reaching true “clutch” status in the big moments against teams from the state of Florida.

Boise State deserves recognition as a top 25 team, but I STILL think they’ve lived in the BCS limelight by not playing a full big conference schedule. There are a thousand reasons to be pessimistic about UGA after what they’ve shown the last two years, but Murray is a gamer like Boise, and I don’t think Boise will have enough offense to match what UGA will do on offense and special teams.

DaDawgster

August 9th, 2011
4:31 pm

Figgins looks like he is having a major issue with pad level in the crouch exercises released from Camp. As a big 6′ 6” guy, his size won’t matter if he can’t get his pad level down to the rushers level. If he come in high, he’ll end up on his back. Also, Figgins himself said he’s struggling with starting from the block with a burst strong enough to get out and lead Samuel. Which means Crowell & Samuel are going to have to slow down, and that will give the defense time to bring a few guys around the corner. 3-on-2 wins no matter how big Figgins is. Also, he’s not got great hands, drops a lot of passes, only caught 9 in his entire 3 year career at Georgi at TE. So Boise/SC will dare you to beat them throwing to Figgins.

DaDawgster

August 9th, 2011
4:36 pm

I doubt Crowell will play on 3rd downs, the risk to missing a blitzing guy who crushes Murray is too high. So probably see a lot of Crowell on 1st downs. I’d look for Crowell to get 10 touches in game 1, matching the number of 1st downs Bobo will get. You’ll see Samuel in on 2nd down, and then Figgins on 3rd down. Touches will be extremely limited for any other back.

“New Dogs will find fan buzz can be awfully fickle”

Not really, it all starts with the pre-game drinking and using the north lawn as a toilet. As the UGA fans stagger towards the stadiun there is a whole lot of woofin’ going on. By the time the game starts, the fans are in a frenzy until da Preacha Man and his Straw Dawg coaching start messing up the play calling. Then the players start making their typical mistakes and the cheers turn to boos. By the middle of the third quarter, the fans are thinking that it would be better to leave and just start drinking again, so it is back to the tailgate scene for more drinks and lawn watering. By the time the game has ended, the fans that are not already on their way home after another UGA lose are passed out on their piles of trash. Those that do manage to stay sober enough to be awake are shouting, “It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog” and “Wait until next year”. So they are not fickle. It is really rather predictable. 1980 – so long ago.

2) Miss St- 1 Td, 58% accuracy
3) Arkansas- 1 Td, 55% accuracy
4) Auburn- 3 TD’s, 53% accuracy
5) UCF- 0 Td’s, 56% accuracy

So, pretty easy to figure out, against Boise/SC, 80% Murray throws either 0 Td’s, or 1 Td and finishes with an SEC low 55% accuracy.

Throw in the other big game, SEC East rival Fla:
3 Td’s, 3 Int’s, 1 Fumble, 48% accuracy

40% chance he throws 1 td
20% chance he throws 3 td’s (Probably against Boise, they tend to get in shootouts a lot)

100% chance he loses the game (0-5 record last year)
0% chance Murray wins

you mentioned the words Mike Bobo, toss sweep and Richard Samuel in the same article…
which is EXACTLY WHAT BOBO WILL DO.

Richard Samuel…slow back…will get the toss sweep calls. When that doesn’t work, throw a bomb.

Crowell- fast, quick back will get run between the tackles. When that doesn’t work, throw a bomb.

I think we might have run a total of 20 toss sweeps in the entire time that Bobo has been the offensive coordinator.

“Samuel is a better more durable back like Lattimore”

Good lord, the only thing that Samuel and Lattimore have in common are they both are on the same planet.

Samuel was moved to scout team LB because he wasn’t good enough for 3rd team RB behind the two “cancers” who lead the team in rushing for the past two years but are now playing Div II.

Samuel was moved back because there were no other option or bodies to provide cover for the prayer that Crowell will work out. It is either glory thru Crowell or bust.

Will Murray complete a pass in the 1st Qrtr vs. Florida in 2011 or blank like 2010?

Blank. Simply because after Boise State and USC, Murray will become UGA’s latest failed experiment at QB. He may work out okay with the scout team, but more likely he’ll be getting splinters from warming his butt on the bench the rest of the season. Murray is simply not a winning FBS QB, and that will be painfully clear four weeks from now.

First of all you trolls can’t spell. Second, Bobo is O.K. as an OC. Third, the Dogs will be just fine this year. Give all the rookies time to learn the system and they will be fine. Murray is a good QB and will turn it around. He will win more games than he loses against ranked teams. South Carolina is the key to the year not Boise. Boise is a pre- season game. Now on to some real questions, will Saban let the players who got clothing for autographs play in all the games with his fingers crossed and risk forfeiting them, or will he have them sit out until word comes from NCAA. I say the coverup continues, they all play all of the games, and then forfeit once after it all comes out that Alabama was lying about all of it to begin with.

Obviosuly, if sticking a 300 lb 6′ 6′ guy in at fullback worked, every team would just be sticking an offensive lineman in to play fullback. But teams rarely do. Why? Big guys are slow, can’t catch, and can’t run fast. I remain more than doubtful that Figgins will do anything positive at 300 lb 6′ 6”, he’ll likley be a big liability back there dropping passes and slowing down the backs. Murray isn’t exactly the tallest QB, so trying to throw over a 6′ 6” 300 lb guy when Murray’s 5′ 10”, 190 lbs?? Doesn’t look good to me, at all. And Figgin’s fellow FB is Ogletree, a small guy who can’t block or catch. This is one of the dumbest moves of all-time.

I’ve heard a rumor, and I sure hope it’s only a rumor, that the other team gets to put players on the field, too. I live in Alabama and get the daily news and sports writers for UA and Auburn everyday. Their articles say the same things the AJC says about UGA: big, talented, fast, motivated players; NC trophy ready; renewed commitment; great recruits making a mark; NC-proven coaches who got it all figured out (and they don’t seem real worried about the Dawgs). I can imagine what’s being said in Columbia. Everybody’s fishing in the same gene pool at this level of college football. It’s a blast to read how our players are bringing on a new attitude and discipline and believe they can be part of something special. For me, the big questions still remain: will that be enough to overcome last year’s poor preparation, misguided game-day strategy, and lack of innovation. UGA’s players are good enough to beat Boise State and SC—but are the coaches?

Quit blaming Bobo, if we have a coaching problem it starts at the top. Even if you accept the argument that Bobo’s playcalling is the problem (I don’t), isn’t it the head coach’s job to properly evaluate the coaches under him and put the right men in the right places?

And if I recall correctly, Richt wasn’t exactly lighting it up as a playcaller when he turned the offense over to Bobo. That is the main reason that a lot of these negative bloggers feel they can insult and type anything they want without impunity on these blogs. They are written in such a way as to invite these type of comments, to increase web hits for the AJC. The web hits are correlated to people supposedly reading the advertisements on the web site, but I don’t bother with advertisements much. That is the main reason I quit subscribing to the AJC paper version. A 20 page front section with 15 pages of advertisements. I wuld rather just pay for the internet and read a lot of different sources about a particular subject. A lof of other publications are more subjective about UGA than the AJC is anyway. More in depth reporting most of the time, unless UGA encounters a problem and then the AJC is on it, like white on rice. It is what it is though, you just learn to live with it.

After the game, a UGA player who reads, writes, and speaks at a 4th grade level will be interviewed on TV, and millions of viewers will wonder why Mark Richt recruits these dummies and why UGA admits them.

It makes you long for the days when ethical UGA coaches like Wallace Butts and Harry Mehre recruited literate athletes who actually earned serious college degrees.
