Georgia's ranking "shocked" Ben Jones, but it shouldn't have. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Some folks inside and outside the Bulldog Nation were surprised when the USA Today coaches preseason poll was released Thursday and Georgia was ranked a respectable No. 22 despite coming off a 6-7 season and a horrendous bowl game.
Even the Dogs’ Ben Jones admitted he was “shocked” at Georgia being ranked in the preseason for the 10th consecutive year.
And Abry Jones said he “didn’t think we would be that high since we didn’t do well last year.”
Tavarres King, on the other hand, said, “I’m not shocked that we’re ranked. We’re still Georgia, and I think everybody knows that.”
I think King probably nailed it right there. Despite coming off a bad season and having a lot of question marks, UGA and Mark Richt have enough residual respect to be considered among the nation’s 25 best teams without having played a down yet.
And while preseason rankings don’t mean a whole lot, as Richt said, “I think it’s a good sign for the program. It’s a good sign of respect if coaches feel like Georgia is a Top 25 team.”
Of course, last year the coaches also thought Georgia was a Top 25 team. In fact, the Dogs were ranked a notch higher in last year’s preseason poll, at 21, and briefly made it up to No. 19 before falling out of the ranking for good after the South Carolina game.
And the No. 22 preseason ranking is the lowest of Richt’s tenure since his first year, when Georgia couldn’t quite crack the Top 25.
Still, being ranked at all is encouraging, even if it might be a result of the coaches (or whoever filled out the poll for them) simply listing Georgia out of force of habit.
At the very least, it bolsters the confidence of the Georgia players as they prepare to meet the No. 7-ranked Boise State Broncos.
And another factor is that while Georgia at times looked terrible last year, they also were thisclose to winning some of those games they lost. As Jones put it: “I think people believe in us. They’re not counting us out, because we lost a lot of games by three and seven points. If we would have made the play in the fourth quarter, we would have been the team that’s 10-3 instead of going 6-7.”
Now they just have to see if they can make those fourth-quarter plays this year. If Joe Tereshinski has anything to say about it, I’m betting they will more often than not.

I was very surprised, not because we just came off a “bad season” but because the bad season follows a downward decline over several seasons. The downward trend alone would be justification for writing us off this year which I was actually hoping for. I’d rather be under radar going in to the Boise State game.

The Orlando Sentinel has the Dawgs rated much higer this year than last (high 20s vs. 60 something I think). We laughed last year but they were pretty accurate. Hopefully the are pretty accurate again this year.

Phil Steele, probably the most accurate guy in the game over the last 10 years, has Georgia as his 5th favorite team, in a blog post he wrote recently. Steele cites a few things:
1- No Alabama, LSU, Ark
2- #1 Special Teams
3- Great recuriting classes and loaded with talent
4- Nice schedule, only 5 tough games, all at home or on neutral turf

This website, found it on Steele’s blog, averages preseason polls to create a consensus preseason ranking.
Georgia comes in at #18.
This ranking is low considering Coach Richt’s finished in the top 10 the last 20 out of 24 seasons going back to FSU.
83% of the last 24 years, Richt’s team has finished in the top 10. Unreal consistency.
Only 4 Opponents on the schedule are even ranked, 8 arn’t ranked on the consensus ranking:
#3 Boise
#15 South Carolina
#22 Mississippi State
#25 Florida
This makes the Boise & South Carolina games, and winning those 2, even more important, as they are the only 2 top 20 teams Coach Richt will face.
Auburn, Tenn, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, due to schedule or talent issues, are not ranked consensus.

Georgia without a doubt is a very talented group. The real concern I have, following last year’s debacle, is how they’ll respond psychologically when momentum turns against them.
Joe T inspires a lot of confidence that they’ll physically be ready for all challenges, but where are their minds at? Hopefully, the purging of some prima donnas and team cancers this offseason put them in a better place.

This team faces challenges related to depth and inexperience, there is no arguing that. What this team won’t lack is conditioning, discipline and attitude. While I am by no means expecting an undefeated season I am nonetheless much more excited about this season than I was the last.
I believe it will be a fun team to watch and it is always great to be a Georgia Bulldog.

If we start 2-0 on the season…we go at least 10-2 or maybe 11-1. I just feel that in my heart that this team is focused and hungry, ready to prove the doubters wrong. They will be fired up vs. Boise and even more fired up vs. South Carolina in Sanford Stadium because they know the impact of that game as well. It’s going to be a good season. Even if we start 1-1, we can still have a good season. But 0-2, I just don’t see our team letting that happen. No way.

It’s not surprising at all. UGA went into the 4th quarter within 7pts of every opponent last year. Untimely fumbles and a lack of being able to finish games translated to losses. Without untimely fumbling and getting tired at the end of games, UGA could have very easily had a fantastic year last year. While AJ is gone, we enter the season with the best QB in the league, a great incoming freshman class, grantham’s defense is in it’s 2nd year…
UGA, like they did last year, might certainly not live up to their potential. But preseason polls, by definition, are based on potential.

There are a couple of things most don’t know about Georgia.
1- How good Def Coor Todd Grantham is
This guy lost 3 DL to the NFL before last seaosn started and came on staff REALLY late in recruiting, didn’t have his body types and speed and height to run his 3-4, and still finished strong in defensive scoring & total defensive yards. Very close to Nick Saban’s numbers in 07′ when Saban was installing the 3-4 in his 1st year at Bama. Year 2, Bama jumped to 14 points a game–11 def points a game average 2 years later, and stuffed the run less than 90 yards a game for 2 years. Terrance Cody’s big body, quickness, made the 3-4 go. Saban went from 7-6, losing several close game in 07′, to 13 wins the next season. Grantham went out and got John Jenkins from Cody’s old school, and Cody’s old coach says Jenkins is faster, quicker, and maybe as strong and will have the same impact on Georgia that Cody had on Alabama. Jenkins is 6′ 5”, 350 lbs.
Note: Georgia Defensive Coach Todd Grantham was asked to be Nick Saban’s DEF COOR, 2X, and turned Saban down. Grantham also trained ASlabama in the off seasons before coming to Georgia. Saban’s considered the top def coach in football.
2- How good Richt is with QB’s
2 guys won a Heisman under Richt when Richt was QB Coach or OC at FSU. 2 guys had totally different styles, Richt adapted. Richt’s record is 55-11 when QB’s start their 2nd season. 80%+ win %. Richt’s win % with 1st year QB’s is much lower. This is Aaron Murray’s 2nd year as a starter. Murray threw for over 3000 yards & 24 TD’s and had a 3 to 1 td to int ratio as a Freshman QB.

Some years the rankings matter. We aren’t competng for a NC this year so it means less this year. In a year where we had a realistic chance to compete for a NC the higher we are ranked the less ground we have to cover to get into the chase. They aren’t taking the #12 ranked SEC champion to the championship. Have to be a top team in the end and that’s hard to do when you start at #22.
It won’t matter this year considering 6-6 is a lot more realistic than 8-4.

Training situation was horrible last season. Didin’t even have a grass field to practice on. Didn’t have the building done, so no breeze to cool down the field. Didn’t have proper equipment as the building was being finished. Our guys were working out in trailers during the transition. It was a bad, bad situation. To have a grass field, a breeze, all the proper equipment, it will make a big difference in the 4th quarter. No one beat Georgia last year. Georgia beat Georgia with turnovers, execution mistakes and mental errors due to being tired.

I wasn’t able to be at practice yesterday but I had a good friend who was there and he said The Dawgs look much faster and appear bigger. He said Ray Drew is huge and very quick. He is going to be better that Clowney this year I bet. He also said that Murray and the receivers looked sharp, missing out on only a few and you could really tell they had worked hard this offseason. IC and Samuel looked fast and he said Samuels is HUGE. Like 240 and fast. He said the combo of Figgins/Samuels could really be good. Very intimidating…something Boise has never seen.
My friend has gotten me fired up for the season. Forget all the negatives I have said since the UCF debacle. It is over and I apologize for being so negative. I now think we will destroy Boise and put UGA back on the CF map. Then it will be a slugfest with USCe for basically the SEC East crown in week 2. I’m fired up! Let’s do this!

If nothing else, Georgia will be fun to watch this year, particularly compared to other years. The new attitude and conditioning will help most of all. I really don’t expect them to challenge for the MNC but to just be competitive, not be gassed in the 4th qtr, and have a desire to win will be enough for me and I hope that it solidifies Richt’s job. Lost to Colorado by 2, Florida by a field goal in OT, UCF by 4, and lost to Ark by 7. Combination of being out of shape & poor execution (defensive execution issues due to inexperience in 1st year in new scheme + wrong body types for scheme), offensive due to inexperience 1st year starter at QB (too many sacks–too many missed passes–too many interceptions in a couple of games–tendancy to lock in on 1 receiver—poor reads) & poor RB play (fumbles & lack of big explosive runs & missed blocking in Pass Pro).

SC went 9-5 losing in horrible fashion to Auburn in the SECCG 56-17 and then turning around and losing to Florida State in the Chik-fil-a bowl. They’re not WORLD BEATERS! They didn’t go 12-0, 11-1, or even 10-2. They lost 5 games last season and just so happened the SEC East was down more than it ever has been before so they went basically by default to the SECCG.
It’s funny how SC has NEVER won a championship but they claim to be the best team in the land. Get a grip. Win a few SEC titles. Then talk. But until then, continue to fade in the latter part of the season and win your usual 8-9 games. Don’t spout off until you can lift a finger and have a ring on it.

Good coaches keep it simple. It’s execution that counts. Take the Florida game. In the OT, Murray made a good read, threw it into the end zone in 1 on 1 coverage, but didn’t throw it to the right spot. Also, Murray threw it in OT to AJ on a good read and Charles ran his route too deep so too many guys were too deep into coverage and ball got tipped and picked. Same for Ealey & King’s red zone fumbles against Col, Miss St, & SC. None of these were Bobo’s fault. Guys have to execute, coaches job is put em into position to win. Bobo did. Got to make plays. Same for the defensive guys getting beat on the wheel route or tackling Lattimore. Last year, defense was learning where to line up, this year focus will be on techniques. Last year, had wrong personel, this year have right personel.

I see 8-5, with losses to Boise, S. Carolina, Miss. St., Florida, and one more (Auburn, Tech or the bowl). The administration will have a tough call on Richt at the end of this year based solely on W-L record, but I think he needs to go.
Richt has been on autopilot for some time now and after 10 seasons has simply lost the fire and focus to be an elite D-1 head coach. During his tenure, Alabama and Florida turned it up a notch and Richt had no response. No shame in that, but Georgia shouldn’t spend another 2-3 years trying to ourselves of what’s become obvious since 2009.

Oh yeah, let’s do it the “Georgia way.” let’s see, that means…
* A high percentage of the team members will be arrested or be cited for everything under the sun, including DUI, driving with a suspended license, and urinating in public.
* Recruiting and playing stupid punks who have the literacy of a third grader, and will have difficulty in passing remedial studies.
* The trashiest, drunkest fans in the US, requiring hundreds of tons of garbage to be removed after home games.
* Keeping bail bondsmen and lawyers fully employed in Athens. No recession for them!
* A head coach who is paid more in one year than most people make in a lifetime. How’s that working out for you homers?
* A proud legacy that includes Jan Kemp, Jim Harrick, and Damon Evans and his red panties.
Yeah, the Georgia way!

I just watched the last drive of the BSU/VaTech game in the above link. Two bad calls put them down there on the doorstep. The picked up block-in-the-back call on the return and the late hit. Officials don’t get instructions before the game, do they? I’m sure it made for better tv ratings for BS the “BCS Buster” to be in the mix for a while. Until they lost to Nevada.

Geoff you are exactly right. They are neaningless and almost always laughably inaccurate. If nothing else, freeze the polls from the previous season at year-end. The reigning National Champs, for example, remain ranked first. If they have graduated a ton of players, then they may lose a few games and assume their rightful place anyway. If the new group keeps winning they retain their ranking. Same things goes for everyone else.

That’s a good idea. Keep Auburn at #1 until they get beat. That would be the way to do it if the polls meant something. Especially with the voting polls (unlike one guy’s opinion), it is highly unlikely that the higher rankings will hold up. How likely is it that Alabama will finish #2, Oregon #3 and LSU #4? LSU finishes #4 with at least 2 losses in the regular season (Alabama and Oregon)? Or, Oregon loses only once and finishes ahead of LSU?

Tech rarely has much talent but managed to win an NC (or 1/2 depending on who you ask) 20 years. Texax and Georgia both have top 10 recruiting year after year, but manage to win a single NC among the 2 in 30 years (let’s say each has 1/2 NC).

@GeoffDawg…my issue wasn’t with UGA being #22 in the polls…I read that…the “residual respect” line was the funny part!…because UGA gravy-trains off of the SEC’s success, it is granted a position it doesn’t deserve in the poll…Clemson, UGA’s mirror image, ended up somewhere around 40th in the voting…no respect for the ACC tarnishes their image…if the two swapped conferences, Clemson probably would be 22nd, because and only because of conference affiliation…

I am no hater. But a #22 ranking is a slap in the face and a “gimme.” That is my opinion. First, UGA as a program SHOULD be a top 12 team each and every year based off of goodwill built up over time. That is what pre-season rankings ultimately are. What has UGA done over the past 4 seasons to deserve even a lowly #22 ranking? Based off results, this is not the #22 ranked team in the country. Second, however, they SHOULD have been higher. These coaches and writers have just given us a “gimme”. We have lost their respect and their fear. UGA needs to prove this on the field.

Compare 1st year in 3-4:
Saban average 22 points on defense in 07, 345 yard of total defense.

Alphare – 1. That was 21 years ago and yes, it was half. 2. You didn’t even have to go to a major bowl to win it, heck you tied a horrible UNC team on a last second FG. 3. Playing an SEC vs. and ACC schedule is a tremendous difference. Denying that is insane 4. I would expect tech to have more talent on any given year than Maryland, North Carolina, NC State, Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia, Boston College. Comparable with Clemson and Va. Tech, behind maybe FSU and Miami.
Yes, you should be in the top half of a bad conference in a typical year. Not doing that is underachieving.

I hear you Trip, but the problem is that Mark Richt is our coach, not Nick Saban.
Saban’s first year at Alabama must have been a fluke, no way he should go 6-6 and lose to a directional school, new defense or not. I think there must have been some serious chemistry problems and some weeding out that had to take place to get that ship righted. It didn’t take him long.
Richt’s been on the job for 10 years now, and has taken a different trajectory. I don’t see year 11 being that great just because we’re in the 2nd year of a new defense. But heck maybe they’ll prove me wrong.

@DawgInTruck: Of course our local papers carry on-line access. The AJC is not an ATHENS paper. It’s an ATLANTA paper. It just happens that the ATLANTA Journal is down the road from ATHENS. Mr. College Football does not represent Dawgs – he represents ALL SEC teams in the AJC. Our local newspapers have AWESOME local blogs that cater to our own fan base if that’s all we care to read about. But as informed football fans, the AJC is the best place for all SEC teams to see what OTHER fan bases are saying and thinking.

Yo Aubie, from MSN Sports:
Apparently, the Lee County, Alabama Sheriff’s department came up with an elaborate way to catch up with over a dozen deadbeat parents. Tell them to show up at a location in Opelika and claim tickets to this years Auburn/Alabama game.
After all, what self-respecting Alabamian could resist that?
Operation “Iron Snare” didn’t round up all the suspects Deputies were looking for, but it got quite a few. They mailed out over 140 letters for people with at least 5-figures of unpaid child support.
We’ll try and refrain from the multiple jokes that we can make over this story. It’s not the first of its kind, we’ve read of it working in New York with Yankees tickets too.
It just goes to prove, in the state of Alabama, they’ll do anything, often without thinking about it…in order to get tickets to their version of a “Holy War”.
You must be some kind of proud dude.

And for Mr. Buckeye, also from MSN Sports:
Two days after several Ohio State freshmen proudly displayed wristbands supporting deposed Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel, the university has taken them away and refunded the players’ money.
”We don’t know that yet, but that’s what compliance is looking into,” Emig said.
Since Ohio State goes before the NCAA’s committee on infractions on Aug. 12, it might also appear that the school remains firmly behind a coach who was forced out on May 30. Tressel was pressured to resign when it was revealed he knew some of his players had broken NCAA rules but did not report it for more than nine months.
”There was a concern that maybe this isn’t a thing that should have been done,” Emig said of the wristbands, which were worn by several freshmen at a news conference on Wednesday.
He added that Ohio State decided to take a ”cautionary” approach after the wristbands, which were sold by an Ohio State staffer, were mentioned prominently in several media reports. After turning in their wristbands, players’ $15 was refunded.
Emig said interim head coach Luke Fickell was unaware that a staffer had sold the wristbands.
Do the OSU coaches keep their heads constantly buried in the sand? Or up somewhere else?

I beg to differ with you there, Hairy. Up or down, win or lose, they’re still Gators. Obnoxious and tacky, a bad combo. And they’re under the delusion that their school is an elite institution, which only adds to the putrid mix.
And they haven’t changed a bit. I lived in Florida while the Dawgs were winning 10 out of 12 in the late 70s and 80s, before Spurrier and their first SEC title, when the series record stood at 44-22-2 UGA, and they talked as much trash then as they do now. UF fans are the only fans I’ve seen that actually talk trash after you BEAT THEM. Most fans of the losing schools lay low for awhile.
That’s why I’m no fan of Richt and look forward to the eventual change. 2-8 against UF just doesn’t cut it for me. If you don’t get that, then you’ve never lived among Gators.

If UGA beats Boise and USC they will have beaten two top ten teams in two weeks and will most likely be in the top ten. If they lose to both, the moving vans will arrive in Athens. Glad I can watch without an emotional investment.

22 is about what I expected. We were not very good last year and what really has changed? We added a good many talented freshmen and the coaches are trying to emphasize better conditioning.
That really does not amount to much in my book for this year. However….if you look at Ga’s linemen on both sides of the ball….those dudes are big! If the coaches can condition and prepare our linemen to just physically get after folks on both sides of the ball….Ga may actually be real good!
Boise St could be in real trouble if that does happen. Ga would simply over power them for 4 qtrs.

The coaches poll, is kind of hard to place a lot of stock in, because most of the coaches, should have been too busy preparing their own teams, to observe and know a lot about the other teams. Polls in about week 5 and after that, probably are fairly accurate, but until then, most schools are getting their OOC games out of the way, and let’s face it, how much do you learn about a team when they are playing a school, much smaller and less powerful usually than they are. It is a continued scrimmage for most of them.
Early polls, mainly benefit the players as it gives them some incentive and boosts their egos somewhat. They know though, that respect is earned on the field, and they will need to earn it on there.
