Should UGA fans be optimistic despite all the question marks?

Aaron Murray is a big reason for optimism in Athens. What are some others? (Associated Press)

Aaron Murray is a big reason for optimism in Athens. What are some others? (Associated Press)

The players officially “report” to UGA today, though most of them have been in Athens working out and/or going to school all summer. The first practice is Thursday. And then we can all start obsessing over the reports over which line is dominating the other, who’s tweaked their hamstring, and all the other joys of college football in August.

Major questions remain to be answered before the Dogs meet Boise State in the Dome. Will anyone step up to fill the gaping hole in our offensive production created by the departure of A.J. Green and Kris Durham? Will any of the tailbacks look like they know what they’re doing? Will the offensive line stay healthy long enough to jell? Can the linebacking corps overcome its inexperience?

Lots to worry about if you’re the worrying sort, which it seems most college football fans are.

But on the other side, the infusion of fresh, exciting young talent is likely to be the greatest we’ve seen in several years in Athens. The Dogs finally will have a legitimate nose guard this year (maybe two) to help Todd Grantham’s defense work the way it’s supposed to. Aaron Murray returns as the consensus best quarterback in the conference. And Georgia’s stacked at tight end and has the nation’s best special teamers.

So before we get into the ups and downs of preseason practice, let’s put a positive spin on all this. What about the 2011 Georgia Bulldogs makes you the most optimistic? Murray? Isaiah Crowell? The schedule? Share your thoughts on why this should be a great year to be a Georgia Bulldog …

My only worry and worry for coaches is a few injuries on the OLine. UGA has its first “shutdown” corner in Nick Marshall and AJ’s replacement in Malcolm Mitchell. We also have speed now at safety and RB and size at fullback. I really don’t have any worries other than the fact that I think we will be a decent team in the first half of the season and a really good team by the second half.

I think the reason to be optimistic is the season hasn’t started yet. This is the time of year that all teams are undefeated and all TRUE fans should be optimistic. I feel another reason to be excited for the upcoming season is we FINALLY have a returning QB with some experience. Only 2 or 3 of CMR seasons have been able to say that and those seasons turned out pretty good.

Because they will win more than 6 by default with this schedule and talent alone…
Because they could start 0-2 and finish 9-3 – which will still be a good year and tickets to home games will be easier to find on the bridge…
Because we don’t have to root for some of these kids we have been obligated to root for because of the G on their helmet, even if they had some character issues…
Because I don’t have to explain to my daughters what it means to be “suspended” so much – especially when it concerns the best player who basically held the entire program hostage for 4 games last year…
Because football games in Athens are just a lot of fun…

I’m a big Christian Lemay fan. Any team he’s on has a chance to beat anyone. Lemay beat Independence High, at home, to stick Indep’s 1st regular season home loss in over 20 years, also led his team to its’ 1st state championship–show the kid knows how to change culture in an organization. I like the way Lemay took the team down for the game winning score on G-Day. Clutch, poise, leadership.

Mason threw that td pass on his first collegiate pass last year coming in cold off the bench, terrific poise. Then recently led his team to the go-ahead td late in the G-Day game too. Very promising what I saw from thse 2 QB’s.

You figure either Aaron Murray makes a big jump in his leadership & end game poise, or else one of these guys steps in.

Georgia wins, better season, either option.

Murray came back early from a broken ankle to lead his team to the state championship at Plant in Florida where the high school football is 2 times better than NC.

Lemay will get his chance down the road but will most likely be redshirted in 2011. Mason is clearly not as good as Murray as evidenced by the spring game and practices which have led the coaches to place him behind Murray on the depth chart.

This may not mean anything but it’s worth mentioning:

UGA BOISE STATE

Seniors 20 24
Juniors 23 22
Sophomores 28 19
Freshmen 16 32

These aren’t exact numbers but in general represent the makeup of each team. I know you can’t go on such statistics but it’s worth mention as far as experience is concerned. Listen, the DAWGS are hungry and I believe more motivated than we have seen them in a long time. That fact, along with the extra work they’ve been putting in and the talent to go with it, spells success. If they don’t beat Boise State and South Caroline, I bet both of those teams will know they’ve been in a football game.
I’m optimistic and believe the DAWGS will prevail! GO DAWGS!

We have to start out with optimism! None of our opponents are unbeatable IF we play well. But, being “stacked at TE” only helps us if we use those players in an attempt to score points! So, that’s up to Coach Bobo to see that it happens. Otherwise, it’s irrelevant. (Charles only touched the ball twice per game last year). A new running play or 2 would be nice to see (especially if it doesn’t involve Carlton Thomas having his head removed on yet another ill-fated run between the tackles….).

I believe the defense will be much tougher this year, especially in the 4th quarter, where we were dominated last year. So, if our offense can score against the better teams (such as Boise, SC, FL), and our starting offensive line stays healthy, it could be a 10-2 or 9-3 season. Beyond that, it will also take a dose of good luck….. GO DAWGS….!!

Can we please all agree that Nick Saban’s “greatness” is overstated. For example, last year he had the consensus #1 team in the nation, scads of NFL caliber talent, a favorable schedule, and still managed to lose 3 games, including the debacle to his archrival. How many 24 point leads did teams coached by Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno, Tom Osborne, Barry Switzer, Pete Carroll, or even Mark Richt, blow? Saban’s records is fine, but he’s not exactly the model we should hold up as ideal.

First of all, good luck to Bulldawg Nation for a healthy upcoming season. As an Alabama fan we do not play UGA, but UGA winning several games against some West opponents would be beneficial.( that is selfish but, you play the cards dealt.)

The UGA team is going to be definitely stronger physically, with Joe T running things ole school style. The UGA team will be more cohesive with several players who had histories of academic, disciplinary and distractions to the team are gone. The staff signed some very good players who at skill positions will contribute immediately( specifically Mitchell, and Crowell, as the staff at Alabama also keyed those two guys as immediatle impact players). The addtion of Junior college players on the DL is the key to running Todd Granthams offense and that was accomplished with Jenkins.

With all that being said, the UGA team plays a schedule that lends itself to winning more games and not having to play the big three in the West also helps. It is a long season and injuries will be the deciding factor. UGA has minimal depth on the OL, but coach Friend is going to be a great addition to the staff at UGA and bringing in a new pardigm is always great for a team who is struggling to find its identity.

UGA will find a way to win, the first two games are the keys and will provide the opportunity for some of these young players to find their footing and gain some traction.

Good luck to UGA and their fans, and go SEC!

Also a big Grantham fan. Coach Grantham’s numbers compared with Saban’s 1st year installing the 3-4 at Bama in 2007. That is very promising considering Saban is thought to be the #1 defensive guru in college football. In the 2nd year there, Saban’s 3-4 really improved, especially against the run and in scoring. I expect Grantham to hold opponents under 90 yards rushing, and average less than 19 points per game yielded. Boise normally scores a lot–but this year has a new OC, new receivers, and pretty much new O-Line. Auburn lost mega productivity on offense and this will be a down year offensively. Georgia Tech is way down in 2011. So, good chance Grantham finished in the top 20, even top 10 in defensive scoring. Lot of video on Lattimore now and teams figured out how to shut him down. The new d-line, particulary Geathers/Jenkins at NT, and Drew & Jarvis as passrushers, along with Smith & Thornton & Tyson & Jones, makes for a terrific front 7 or 8. Stripling was one of the best passrushers in the nation coming out of high school. Boykin & Branden should be good at corners. Ogletree will be solid at ILB. Robinson is weak and unproductive at ILB (only 30 tackles in 2010), but a lot of new talent there coming in. You got to build your D in the SEC to stop the run.

Of course there are holes — there are always holes. What I’m most excited about seeing is whether there’s been a tangible change in the team’s approach to games, meaning 1) the new attitude that should be there among the players given some recent departures and the emergence of a few emotional leaders like Murray and Boykin; and 2) the effects of a new S&C program that might make them a lot stronger late in the game (not making any assumptions here until we see some actual results, but things couldn’t get much worse than they already were). No telling what the new season will bring, but at this point it’s good to be optimistic — after all, we don’t really watch the games just to torture ourselves, do we?

1953…

Aaron Murray is not a source of optimism for me, but I do feel solid about the QB depth, and feel good about Lemay & Mason. Plant High won Championships before & after Murray, it’s the coaching there and overall talent on the team, Murray had little to do with it.

Lemay led his team to it’s FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. Mason led his team further than they’d ever gone.

but again, Georgia’s good at QB either way, like I said, Murray might transform into a poised leader in the 4th quarter, or one of the poised QB’s will be starting by game 2 or 3.

So I’m looking forward to all questions being answered in the affirmative, a big bounce-back from last year and a season that we can all be proud of.

Of course, I have to wonder about those that not only are pessimistic about the coaches, the team and the coming season, they are also bound and determined to tell everybody about it. My guess is that they’re not Georgia fans at all, they’re trolls, and even if they happened to have matriculated there, with open criticism that only serves to discourage current and prospective players, they can’t really call themselves Georgia fans and be accurate…just a bunch of cynics that think their opinion matters more than mine does, and we all know that just isn’t so.

I love the trailer nation bammer on here who thought he’d take a cute little off -the – cuff stab at AU (28-27 by the way), saying THUGA doesn’t have to play “the big 3 of the West” this season. So by your 3rd grade level education, who are your so-called “big 3″ in the west hotshot? You got your arses handed to you in your own house (well technically it’s now AU’ house since you’ve only beaten us 1 time in over a hundred years there) in what was the most humiliating loss in your pathetic program’s history. And you guys are STILL running your mouths. That is rich!! Too dam funny!!! What a bunch of red clay eatin’ fools!!

JJ I hear has major issues so I’m thinking its Ray Drew time already. He is the leader of the class and may be all we have on the outside. The loss of JJ really hurts this defense and with him I thought we had a top 20 nationally ranked unit. Now we will have to see what Drew has.

I think UGA will have better year then last year, they can win SEC East and then it up to 1 game to win SEC, by that time they will have big mo on their side and anything can happen. Also I think they will be better at the end of the year then at the start, wish Tech played them early.

but I also think USCe, Florida, have same shot as UGA, just a matter of which team steps up. If I had to pick I would say Florida but it just a guess.

Wish you guys the best of luck, hope your players stay healthy, and UGA vs Tech game is between two top 10 teams. With a Tech win.

If the SEC is as tough as everyone says, there is a big difference in the 2010 experiences each QB had. Our defense should be one of the best in the SEC with a new attitude…a key clog in the middle at NT…2nd year in the 3-4…entire secondary back…new S & C program…Ogletree at ILB…& we have the best special teams unit in the country…put all that together with the new hunger and drive that this team has and the sky’s the limit.

People look at the loss of A.J. Green and say “Oh no what are we gonna do?!”…to be honest, if I had to choose on who we had back between Green and Durham, I’d pick Durham all day. Durham loved Georgia and played his heart out for us. Green just got out of Georgia what he could and that was a top 5 paycheck. He never played a full season for UGA, didn’t win us anything, so what good did he actually do us?

I can at live with a lost to a good team when you say ,too bad but somebody had to lose , next time it will be them, or good try. But last year our offensive line and at times our defensive line was beat so bad I now know the agony that teams like Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech must feel in the past. Not having the depth to ” FINISH THE DRILL”. It’s one of the first years that I didn’t feel we could beat the good teams and the negative attitude from some of the players really hurt the teams confidence which allowed some worst teams to beat us. I applaud McGarity being able to see this problem in less than a year and doing something to change the mind set that was entrenched in Athens.
The radical changes I hope will be very obvious in 2011 because of the easier schedule and if the changes can help win the first game or two, this year will be very special . All I hope is we are able to compete and that hopeless feeling never is there again. I sure like what I am hearing and I hope the Freshmen can learn the system fast enough to help from the first game.
I think Drew, Herrera , Marshall and Mitchell will have very big years and as many as 10 in the Freshman class will not red shirt. With CMR moving Samuel back to tailback and having Malcome there I don’t think, at least the first few games, that Crowell will be as much of an impact player as he will be later in the year. Can’t wait. Go Dawgs.

If Bobo ever learns to include the team in the offense Georgia will be a tough team to beat with all the skilled talent available. Last year his philosophy was to get the ball to Green. There is a long list of players who would have been playing this year and continuing with the all about me attitudes. The choice was made to flip those players and bring in talented younger players who know nothing but “The New Georgia Way”.

Richt was quoted at 1 TD Club meeting as saying “I have lost my patience”. He got a standing ovation.

And you Bobo haters, lay off. The guy knows how to call plays. It may not be the most exciting plays and I admit that sometimes he makes you scratch your head, but he knows how to put us in position to score. FACTS: Last season we scored 30+ points in 8 out of our 12 games. FACT: in 6 of our 12 games we put up 40+ points. FACT: After the loss to Colorado, we never scored less than 30 points again until the bowl game, and that was 7 weeks in a row of scoring 30+ points. And 5 of those seven offensive outings we put up 40 or more points. Don’t believe me? Go look it up.

That’s how I know that Murray was not the reason we lost those games. The defense was. Well our defense will be better this season. Better watch out.

Rabid Dawg Fan, You have to credit the coaching staff, media, and fans for the “throw it to Green philolsophy of the last three years”. They are the ones that geared the offense to him. The qb practiced to get the ball to him. They went away from the team philosophy to get the quick fix by throwing to him probably more than they should. They certainly went away from the running game to throw the ball more….Making one person the go to hero guy only takes away from the team…and I dare say promoted some grief among the running backs and possibly poisoning the team to some extent… In recent reading they have mentioned how good Mitchell is. I hope they do not go that route again with a player and not use the players that have been in the program longer. He may be greater than Green but do not put the crown on anyone as the savior of the program. One thing aboout the Walker years….They were a team!!!!! Last year that was not evident.

Rabid Dawg, Scoring 30 points is great…. Sometimes how quick you score hurts the defense by not allowing them a rest. Look at the time of possession and the games we scored 30 points. I cannot remember the game but someone had a long sustained drive after we went up in the score. After about 15 plays the other team scored. We ran the KO back for a TD, Defense back on the field for another long sustained drive and a score…. After that the game was basically over. I am for the Strength and conditioning program but sometimes the game situation dictates more an effect on the players as their over all fourth quarter conditioning. If the team is conditioned for four quarters and the defense has to play 40 minutes and the offense only 20 because they score so many points or so fast….well…that makes a substantial difference in performance….Not to mention the freshness of the special teams that score quickly. Just a thought. Go Dawgs!!!!

Yes there is reason for optimism the season has not started and for the first time in 3 years the attitude on this team is geared to win. There seems to be a renewed vigor around the program that mediocrity of the last 2 seasons is not going to be tolerated by the new AD. That bad attitudes were kindly shown the door and a renewed sense of urgency by Coach Richt. Hopefully all of this lends itself to more wins on the football field.

We will know rather quickly whether the changes that have been made are successful as we play a very good Boise State team in the very first ballgame and what I have seen the last 5 years is they come ready to play in the big ballgames. Them coming here the first game of 2005 and getting manhandled was the best thing to happen to them as their coaching staff and players learned what they needed to do to get better and be able to compete and win against the big boys. Anyway I do believe we will be better this year I just hope it shows up in wins otherwise Coach Richt will be gone, he may be gone if he loses to Florida again this year.

Everyone is optimistic this time of year as they should be. We are all undefeated till kickoff.

I would have more optimism going into the season if Mark Richt had made the difficult decision that NEEDS to be made, and that is firing or demoting Bobo. As long as he is calling plays, I will have very little optimism for our offense. I have a ton of optimism for the defense, and I truly think they will improve barring injuries and suspensions. Hopefully they will be good enough to keep us in games, but as long as Bobo has his head in the offense, we will not meet expectations. We were stacked at tight end last year, yet Bobo acted as if we didn’t have a tight end to throw the ball to.

The man has no business being an offensive coordinator at the college level, and until Richt figures that out, we will suffer, or it will lead to Richt’s demise.

“I’m thinking FSU runs Florida now”

After FSU finally beats UF after seven years? That makes about as much sense as when UGA fans said in 2007 (after winning for the third time since 1990) that they owned UF again. Convoluted thinking at best.

Tech fan here. Looking forward to seeing what kind of team UGA puts on the field this year. You have a very favorable schedule…if you can pull it together quickly and at least split the first 2 tough games…AND if your kids can stay healthy…I think your Dogs will be the best in the SEC East. Good luck in every game except one…

I believe its more of a general sense from hearing that myth bantered around.

Do you seriously believe that there has ever, one time, been a game in which they decided to abandoned the running game that was working fine, “for no reason”.

It might not have been a reason that you agreed with, (assuming you can identify it) it might have also been a reason that ultimetely turned out to not work out. MUCH more likely it was for reasons that you were not aware of, since you don’t sit up I the booth with spotters telling you every move the oppenents make. It was NOT “for no reason”. And for darn sure it wasn’t to try to pad Matt Stafford’s stats while purposely making the game more difficult to win.

But I’d be more quick to believe that if you could name a couple of times, not a catalog, when we were running the ball, no factors changed and voila’, just stopped doing it for no reason.

You are dreaming if you don’t think FSU into going to pound Florida into a big pile of sand in 2011.

Fisher will own the state in the next 2 years and don’t look now but Miami hired a good solid coach in Golden. Florida could be back to 3rd in the state in just a couple of years.

A Dawg……..I do know that when the Dawgs beat Tech year before last When King and Ealey ran on them all night, the AJC did numerous stories about Georgia’s run game and how they seem to give up on it in many games. Maybe they had to. I’m not dreaming that we would, in some games appear to be running the ball effectively….and then just start throwing it………Wasted energy here. looking forward to a balanced attack this year.

Nobody in the league runs the ball 650-70% of the time, with the rare exception of a do it all QB. Alabama is about as close to a power running team as there is, philosophically, and it’s 60% more or less. (Same as UGA historically under Richt.)

Warmack is a three year starter for us at OG and pre season All-SEC pick. Out of Cam Newton’s high school, Atlanta Westlake. He lined up beside another Georgia Native, OT and 1st round draft choice James Carpenter on our National Champuionship team. All UGA had to do was sign Warmack, Atlanta MLK’s and Ole Miss. center A. J. Hawkins (Remington watch list as a Junior), Creekside’s and S. Carolina’s All-SEC OG Rokevious Watkins, and N. Gwinnett’s and Tennesee freshman All-American OT JuWuan James, and you would have had the depth necessary to win thw East and maybe more.

We have no room to talk any smack with the Gators. That would be like them talking smack in the late 80s after two decades of domination from UGA. I don’t recall that the AJC ever reported any such thing. Not with any standard of proof or objectivity. I could imagine there were “opinion” blogs that might have said that to produce fan response, like any number of subjective topics do. And that has been, as I concurred, a subject thrown out they by fans quite often over the years.

But if it was factually prevalent, it seems like giving one example would not be that difficult.

Actually, the Dogs started out favored heavily against Florida, but current line is Florida favored by 1. Dogs picked to soundly drub Auburn, Tech, MSU, and get a win against Tenn. Only losses Vegas predicting now would be Boise (Boise favored only by 1.5), South Carolina (favored by just 3), and Florida (favored by a hair at 1). So Vegas has the Dogs going 9-3 with potential upsets over Boise, South Carolina & Florida with 3 or less range, finishing 12-0.

I’ll add to BMDPD’s comment…at several times last year, we were able to effectively run a toss sweep….then, we stopped…and started chucking it downfield.

And I will predict Althama’s next post…by stealing a quote from that illustrious ponzi schemer Jim Donnan during a bulldog hotline call in show..”How do you know how many times we called that play? I was on the sidelines calling it….you must have been drunk or in the bathroom.”

My opinion is that the obvious default position is that NO coaching staff in the country just does things that abandons a better chance to win the game for no reason. To me, just opinion, that does not need to be proven by charting games to prove it because common sense tells us they would want to win, and if they were effectively doing that, they wouldn’t sabotage it. Listing some general examples that the plays changed during the cource of some game does not IMO prove that.

Now if you actually saying that we haven’t been a great Running team for a couple of years, that something I have been saying a long time.

But to say that we are a prefectly fine running team, and do so well, and other teams cannot shut that down TILL the coaches just inexplicable stop doing it for no reason, I’d disagree.

“about being “stacked at tight end”

Have to find something print beside the Aaron Murray is the best evah.

Dirty little secret is that you have to have a solid running game or extreme threats on the outside for the TEs to sneak underneath or behind the linebackers, UGA has neither. And another obstacle is that due to the issues on the offensive line against better teams, UGA is going to be FORCED to hold the TE in to block or Aaron Murray is going to get murdered.

So look for the “stacked” UGA TEs to show out against the Coastals and to disappear against the better teams. Of course, this will be blamed on Bobo for not “utilizing” their weapons by delusional UGA fans when in reality it is a product of the sloppiness of the entire coaching staff in the last few years for allowing the talent level at UGA to fall so far.

This year’s season will be dependent on the coaching, not the players.

UGA always has a rich stable of potential all-stars. The challenge is turning the raw clay into a beautiful sculpture.

Richt has been given plenty of chances. If he blows it again, he needs to be thrown out onto US41 heading south.

Anything less than beating Florida PLUS winning the SEC East should result in immediate termination of Richt and most of his staff.

I think UGA has bottomed out and will start on their up cycle.

Could see UGA going 8-4 to 10 -2.

Probably will be 8-4.

My guess:
Wins: Coastal Carolina, Ole Miss, Vandy, New Mexico State, Kentucky, GT
Should Win – but could lose: Tennessee, Auburn
Not favored : Boise State, Mississippi State
Losses: USCe and Florida

Anybody can bite you – I thought GEORGIA was going to pound Lane Kiffen at Tennessee – man, was I wrong. Tennessee was the better team – played better against Florida than UGA – and should have / could have beaten Alabama that year .

How many times has the underdog won in the UGA – Auburn game.

Just never know – but UGA should be a much better product this year. Will it be enough to beat Boise, USCe, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Florida and Auburn????

Best of luck to UGA – will be rooting for you in the SEC East this year.

I guess your mommy reads to you every night and the story is always has a happy ending and everyone lives happily ever after. The facts are we are coming off three very disappointing seasons and we have work to do. Do I think we can turn it around? Yes, but we still have issues.

I guess you would have put 10’s on everything and been happy with all the lies?

Richt’s record is solid when he has a little experince at QB. Richt’s record with a QB in 2nd season as a starting QB is a stunning 55-11. Yes, that’s an 83% win % so out of 13 games, that’s at least a 10 win season.

We lost 4 close games: Colorado, lost by 2 points with less than 2 minutes to go, Florida lost by 3, UCF lost by 4, Ark lost by 7. Could have easily have been 10-3 or 9-4. I don’t see going 0-4 in close games in 2011. QB play should be better with less to’s like the Fla & UCF games, ball protection should be better than what happened in the Colorado game as Ealey & King are no longer on the team. Defense should be better upfront with Jenkins & Geathers preventing time for QB’s to find open receivers like the Ark game and LB’s faster for coverage against RB’s and better playcalling at the end of games from coaches. Losing to Florida in overtime by 3, was progress.

The main thing I am optimistic about is the improvement in the front 7 in the second year of the 3-4. This is an area that always sees improvement in the second year of the system (ask Bama), but it probably won’t matter if we cannot scrounge up two safeties that could at least make the roster at Tech or Vandy.

Jim

August 2nd, 2011
3:38 pm

There are a few turnaround ideas that have worked in the SEC.

1- Big NT + Convert defense to new scheme 3-4 defense
Alabama went from 7-6 to 13 wins in 1 season by getting Cody & changing to a new rarely seem defensive scheme. Georgia has Jenkins & Geathers and Grantham brought the 3-4 scheme he taught to Alabama before Richt grabbed him.
2- Highly Touted RB
South Carolina won the East by picking up Lattimore who busted 1100 yards for 17 td’s as a freshman. Georgia picked up Crowell, a top ranked RB who got over 11 yards a carry last year.
3- Grab a Highly Touted QB
Auburn went from OK to 14-0 with Newton. Georgia went out and recruited Christian Lemay, #1 ESPN propsect as a Junior. Players rave about his mobility, poise, leadership, and work ethic.
4-Get a playmaker touches
Florida excelled with Percy Harvin. Georgia has Malcom Mitchell.

Luckily, Georgia seems to be using more than 1 SEC proven remedy for turning your team around.

Bill,

Until we see what kind of play we have in the first quarter of the Boise St and the first half of the USC game, most UGA fans like me will have very reserved optimism. We understand that great players who are coached well along with good backups get us to the next level. We are very very young and have minimal depth at several key positions. Too many times teams with bright futures have seen their seasons go down the drain with a few injuries to key players.

Jim

Watch out for Lemay. He threw 44 td’s against 2 int’s, better than Kellen Moore’s best year in high school. That’s a 21 to 1 td to int ratio. Also, MaxPrep National Player of the Year. Led his team to 1st state championship. Those of you who were at G-Day had to be imressed with hi poise down the stretch as Bobo put the game in Lemay’s hands with it all on the line and he led the team on the game winning drive with some clutch runs and passes. Lemay is as good as Newton.

Everybody on the Boise side talks about Kellen Moore like he’s already won the Heisman. The last QB gunslinger UGA faced had this kind of a night:

“After getting slammed to the Superdome turf one last time by Geno Atkins, Brennan staggered to the sideline, his night mercifully done. The junior had the worst showing of his career in a game played to the finish, going 22-of-38 for just 169 yards, less than half of his 348-yard average this season.”

I know Boise has a great record over the years, but I don’t expect them to have any surprise factor at all. Moore is actually smaller than Murray, and our lines outweigh BSU on both sides by 50 lbs. Hopefully, UGA fans will hear something like this again after the game:

Brennan ran up against a swarming Georgia defense that was in no mood to give the little guys another day in the sun. In the first half alone, he was sacked five times and turned it over twice, losing a fumble and throwing an interception. “We’ve never played in this element,” Brennan said. “We got here and we tried as hard as we could to keep it as normal as we’re used to, but it just seemed like we weren’t used to this kind of venue. We weren’t used to the crowd noise. We couldn’t get our audibles. “It was the fastest team I’ve probably ever seen,” Brennan said. “We just couldn’t get into our groove.”

That’s at least what I want to hear. I know some will say Hawaii is no Boise State, but they were undefeated against similar competition, they were the “hot” team and they had all the confidence in the world… Until the game began…

Please tell me you are kidding! Another year of Dawg hype. Every year is the “Year we’re winning a national championship”. Remember those hotel rooms booked when Stafford and Mareno were in Athens ready for a MNC? Here’s some facts: LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Vols and Florida have all won national champtionships since UGA’s lone MNC 31 years ago. Dawgs are a second tier SEC team. You guys somehow win the SEC title every summer. I don’t know how, but you do every single year.

But……

Boise has a really good, experienced team.
South Carolina has a really good, experienced team.
What if you guys go 0-2?
What happens then?
It could happen.
What happens then?:

I know what happens if you go 2-0, or maybe go 1-1 and lose to Boise but beat SC (in that case, you still can dream of beating the Gators)

But what happens if you go 0-2 to start the season?
What happens then?

Gator fans are expecting a 6 to 8 win season this year…..and will be thrilled with 9 or 10 going into the following year….when the Gators will again be national title contenders again.

But what if you go……..0-2?

FLA DAWG,

UGA’s offense line is below average. I disagree with you there. They are thin but the starting five have got a fair amount of experience, are in good condition and they are huge. I think two of the five are pre-season all SEC picks at their position.
The defense is not below average either. The front seven will have a good bit of pressure to put on the OL’s of other teams, and I believe our safeties and CB’s can handle the job.
If these two parts of the puzzle do their job, UGA is above average. The only thing hurting is the experience, and I suspect, what ever growing they need to do after practice ends and the games begin will come to them real soon. Nobody on the DAWGS is going to lay down and give up I can bet you on that.

After reading multiple post on this blog, I had to make a comment. First, UGA should have Optimism. The players are reporting and all these young men have the air of excitment around them. Second, UGA has a schedule that is favorable. Third, the top 22 player plus Special team players can play with anyone in the SEC. UGA and their fans have witnessed an overhaul of their offseason strength and conditioning program while gettting rid of some players who did not want to be student athletes.

UGA has a tough two game opening stretch, and that will set the tone for the program and lay down the identity of the team for the season. UGA also will need some of their young pups to step up and take over some positions.

I am not a UGA fan, but recognize the efforts made by The staff at UGA to turn this program around.

So go ahead UGA fans and be optimistic until you have reason to be anything less.

Good Luck to UGA and to the rest of the SEC.

Red and Black,

I respect your opinion but must emphasis what you have pointed out – they are thin. There is zero depth to this line and the experience they have rates far too low to compete effectively in this conference.
I hope The Dawgs run the table but on paper and on the field I just don’t see it happening.

I’m sure you’re as anxious as I to get this season underway. I want to see for myself just what we have. But I don’t see us better than 1 – 1 after two games.

Aaron and Durham certainly were the play makers last season. The soft hitting defense was virtually a “No Show” all season. They couldn’t stop anyone except the “Sisters of the Poor”. Gotta get “Meaner and Hit Harder”! The Offense played well enough to have a good year if the Defense had shown up.

FLA DAWG,

I am anxious also to see what they can do. I would be happy to split the first two games, but more happy to win both. I believe the way to beat Boise is just be more physical than they are. We have the size and strength to do it, so I hope we will.
S.C. is the Lattimore show. Take away his running lanes, and Spurrier is forced to go with Garcia. They do have a really good wide out, but if Garcia is rushed, he makes poor decisions. His other QB isn’t ready according to Spurrier, and in the few years I have watched garcia, he makes bad decisions when he is hurried. Lattimore will get some yards. UGA just can’t afford to let him, control the game. I don’t think he will be running up the middle like he did last year, against the big uglies we have now. The three guys we have on the DL, are fully capable of commanding double teams that occupy the 5 men on an opposing OL. Do that and the LB’s should be able to be much more active in the game. To me, it is all a matter of controlling the OL, and I believe these guys can do that.
If we can get some of these guys to step up a little and increase their learning curve, UGA will surprise a few folks. I think with the new attitude, S and C, improvements, and if CMR will become more involved in the offense, we will be ok.

I hope UGA has no major injuries this year that would cause a starter to miss a number of games. I don’t want him to have any excuses at all.

It took me a little while, but I think I have finally figured out why the UGA haters come on blogs about UGA and spout their dribble. Forgive the slowness as I am getting older.
It is called the Mickey Finn Syndrome. His famous saying was, “He was going to hit me, so I hit him back first”. Fear, just plain fear. It even drives Tech. fans to come on here, and pretend they matter in the whole scheme of things.
It probably wouldn’t be so bad, except most of the stuff spouted by these haters, is equivalent to a 4th grader mentality. No substance and all B.S. with childish remarks. Isn’t this the time of year when all these haters should be on their own blogs, supporting their teams. You can forgive the Tech. fans of that, since they really don’t have much of a team.

3.)Regret fulmer’s firing- At this point yes!

4.)Realize that Dooley will take at least 2 more years to get UT competitive again.- I agree with that but I like the majority of UT fans are realist with our expectations year after year.Unlike Ga fans who will brag before a season starts that they will win it all. I dont know how any educated football fan can look at Ga this year and expect to win the SEC. Yes they have about the easiest schedule in the country but they still have to play with with very little dept at any position. All of the “if we stay healty” and if pigs could fly ! Kicking the ball off out of bounds. Logan Gray being used for fair catches!! Richard Samuel being switched back and forth. Once again (seriously-how many times under CMR has our offensive line been our biggest weakness, even when it suppose to be our greatest strength? Poor clock management. Inability to score TD’s in the Red Zone (making Billy Bennett or best offensive weapon). Players not getting better… (Knowshon? Stafford? Greene? All had the best years as sophomores). Having Joe Cox toss Richard Samuel the ball in the fist quarter of a game when they were back-ups only to watch Samuel fumble the ball). RB by committee. No killer instinct. Throwing to K Durham instead of AJ Green in overtime? I could go on and on. Yet somehow now that we have a new strength and conditioning coach, all that will change? Lord-I hope I’m wrong, but this train seems headed off the tracks. Guess we’ll find out in about a month.

I guess half the bloggers on here expect a team player to be putting down his own team. What in the hell’s fire would you expect a player to say about his own team. You all act like Murray is 22 people, or did some of you not know that football is a team sport. The kid was a freshman last year, put up good stats. and had very little support most of the time on the offensive side of the ball. Our defense, in a 3-4 formation was also brand new, and didn’t have the big uglies we needed, but I suppose that is Murray’s fault as well, to some of you buffoons. Most of you folks on here are so full of hate and jealousy, when it comes to UGA, you seem to abandon, all intelligent forethought and reasoning. 31 more days folks and then, you will either have some legitimacy in your claims, or a new handle.
