Should UGA fans be optimistic despite all the question marks?

Aaron Murray is a big reason for optimism in Athens. What are some others? (Associated Press)

Aaron Murray is a big reason for optimism in Athens. What are some others? (Associated Press)

The players officially “report” to UGA today, though most of them have been in Athens working out and/or going to school all summer. The first practice is Thursday. And then we can all start obsessing over the reports over which line is dominating the other, who’s tweaked their hamstring, and all the other joys of college football in August.

Major questions remain to be answered before the Dogs meet Boise State in the Dome. Will anyone step up to fill the gaping hole in our offensive production created by the departure of A.J. Green and Kris Durham? Will any of the tailbacks look like they know what they’re doing? Will the offensive line stay healthy long enough to jell? Can the linebacking corps overcome its inexperience?

Lots to worry about if you’re the worrying sort, which it seems most college football fans are.

But on the other side, the infusion of fresh, exciting young talent is likely to be the greatest we’ve seen in several years in Athens. The Dogs finally will have a legitimate nose guard this year (maybe two) to help Todd Grantham’s defense work the way it’s supposed to. Aaron Murray returns as the consensus best quarterback in the conference. And Georgia’s stacked at tight end and has the nation’s best special teamers.

So before we get into the ups and downs of preseason practice, let’s put a positive spin on all this. What about the 2011 Georgia Bulldogs makes you the most optimistic? Murray? Isaiah Crowell? The schedule? Share your thoughts on why this should be a great year to be a Georgia Bulldog …

@ Greatest Game “Will be interesting to see how this year’s team copes with the memories of the beat down UGA got from Tech on that magical night in November 2008 — 45-42.”
Is it so bad in Atlanta that the Gnats have to consider a measly 3 point win a beat-down? Sheesh. That was three years ago, Techie. Forgotten.

Richt has only had 4 seasons at Georgia where he didn’t win 10 games or more.

2001, 2006, 2009, 2010

Richt followed 2001 & 2006 with a great season. 2010 wasn’t quite at that level. But the good news is 2 out of 3 times so far, Richt has followed a bad season with a great season. 67% chance it’s a great season like 2002 & 2007.

I guess your mommy reads to you every night and the story is always has a happy ending and everyone lives happily ever after. The facts are we are coming off three very disappointing seasons and we have work to do. Do I think we can turn it around? Yes, but we still have issues.

I guess you would have put 10’s on everything and been happy with all the lies?

Optimistic? Pesimistic? Let’s for once quell all expectations and pull for our team one game at a time. The guys are working hard. Let’s support them instead of burdening them with a bunch of expectations.

Richt’s record is solid when he has a little experince at QB. Richt’s record with a QB in 2nd season as a starting QB is a stunning 55-11. Yes, that’s an 83% win % so out of 13 games, that’s at least a 10 win season.

Going from 8-5 in 2009 to 6-7 in 2010 I would certainly say not. Considering the last three-year trend I would think you might want to re-visit your stat book from college.

Dawgs will beat Boise. They play Georgia, TCU and TEN cupcakes. Rivals has their schedule at #81 out of 120 Div 1 teams. Most of their schedule has teams ranked north of 70. They play no one. Dawgs will run….and run and pound as their star QB sits and watches……..We really lose either way, cause after we UPSET them, all this will come out. Carolina is the prize. And we will prevail.

We lost 4 close games: Colorado, lost by 2 points with less than 2 minutes to go, Florida lost by 3, UCF lost by 4, Ark lost by 7. Could have easily have been 10-3 or 9-4. I don’t see going 0-4 in close games in 2011. QB play should be better with less to’s like the Fla & UCF games, ball protection should be better than what happened in the Colorado game as Ealey & King are no longer on the team. Defense should be better upfront with Jenkins & Geathers preventing time for QB’s to find open receivers like the Ark game and LB’s faster for coverage against RB’s and better playcalling at the end of games from coaches. Losing to Florida in overtime by 3, was progress.

We are stronger and faster, but yet younger and untested. Our depth issues is more what I am worried about than anything else. If we have one of our big’uns go down on either side of the ball we will see a drop off. I would say Bobo is our “weakest link” but Murray is a good enough athlete to make up for some of his play calling.

I think most investor don’t believe in doing something stupid like selling low. They look at historical data. That’s if they are already invested. As some of us are.

Or for some others, why not buy low? Almost certain to go higher at this point.

But in your case, I’d suggest that diversifying would fit your investing strategy better.

The boys were working out from trailers last off season. Everybody forgets that, but it really counts. Team couldn’t develop chemistry because couldn’t fit in the room. Big new building was being built. Now it’s brand new and state of the art. And with the new emphasis on nutrition, better facilities/equipment, and the distance running training for endurance, has to be an improvement. The basketball caved at the end of games too. I think the facility constraint was a big contributor.

The main thing I am optimistic about is the improvement in the front 7 in the second year of the 3-4. This is an area that always sees improvement in the second year of the system (ask Bama), but it probably won’t matter if we cannot scrounge up two safeties that could at least make the roster at Tech or Vandy.
