Fan talk: UGA doesn’t need Isaiah Crowell to be the next Herschel Walker

Let’s answer some Junkyard Mail …

Like all UGA tailbacks, Isaiah Crowell must operate in someone's shadow. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Like all UGA tailbacks, Isaiah Crowell must operate in someone's shadow. (Jason Getz / AJC)

JerryDawg writes: After all the build-up, I’m getting awfully concerned that Isaiah Crowell is going to be another tailback bust for the Dawgs. I’ve heard and read all kinds of reports that he showed up in Athens with an attitude, skipped some workouts and had to have some of his teammates sit him down and try to get his head on straight. Are you worried, Bill?

I think Mark Richt said it best: “We don’t expect Isaiah to save the program. We don’t expect Isaiah to put the team on his back. We expect Isaiah to learn what to do and to do things the Georgia way and to try to do anything he can to help the team win as a freshman. We’ll see how far that goes.”

As for the rumors, I don’t put that much stock in anonymous reports on the Internet. But more importantly, can we let the kid have his first official practice as a Georgia Bulldog before we start worrying about his attitude or work ethic? That’s one of the downsides of today’s 24/7 media environment: Players are constantly being scrutinized. Can you imagine what it would have been like had the blogosphere and social media existed when Herschel Walker first hit Athens? He didn’t exactly tear it up in preseason practice his freshman year, with Vince Dooley famously fretting that he was concerned No. 34 was going to wind up being just another “big, stiff fullback.” We found out differently once it was for real.

What would the blogosphere have made of worries Herschel Walker would be just a big, stuff fullback? (AJC file)

What would the blogosphere have made of worries Herschel Walker would be just a big, stuff fullback? (AJC file)

I’m not saying that Crowell will be the next Herschel Walker. Or even the next Knowshon Moreno. Heck, after the past couple of seasons, I’d settle for him being the next Musa Smith.

(And, by the way, if you haven’t yet watched the trailer for the upcoming ESPNU “Storied” documentary on Herschel, check it out. As a friend said, it’ll give you chill bumps.)

Thomas Vaiden writes: Do you know what number Isaiah Crowell will be wearing this season? Thanks. !GO DAWGS!

After the G-Day game, Richt said Crowell will wear No. 1, the same jersey number worn by cornerback (and occasional offensive player) Branden Smith. “We’ve just got to make sure they’re not in the game at the same time,” Richt said.

Garrett Kee writes: Hey Bill, this is Garrett Kee from Columbus, Ga., hope you’re doing well. I just wanted to get your thoughts on the new Nike Pro-Combat uniforms Georgia will be wearing against Boise in the opener. I have seen these combat unis on Florida, Oregon, LSU, Virginia Tech, etc. and have to admit I’m a little worried. They seem to change the uniforms with “radical” color schemes and crazy helmets (look at LSU and Boise). Are you worried that our good ole traditional red jerseys, red helmets and silver britches are going to be altered much? I know I am tired of these uniform “outfits” we have sported the last couple of years and just want to see hard-nosed football being played without worrying how good we look. Yet, I know that we have a pretty big contract with Nike and are almost obliged to do this sooner or later. Go Dawgs!

Garrett, I haven’t been a big fan of Nike’s special uniforms up to now, but I thought the ones they trotted out during bowl season were a slight improvement. I’ve no idea how drastic a reworking it will be, though again we’ve got lots of supposedly insider reports circulating. Take your pick: I’ve heard the helmets will be red. Or silver. Or white with a red stripe. The one thing we do know is that the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game folks say Georgia will be wearing red jerseys and Boise State will be wearing blue. There’s a lot of speculation Georgia might wear red britches as well, but that’s all it is — speculation. Still, it’s only for one game and both teams will be wearing the Pro Combats and the players are excited, so I don’t see any real harm in it. If anything, the uniforms contribute to the feeling of this being a special game.

By the way, Patrick Garbin’s always interesting historical blog has a nice overview of Georgia’s football uniforms.

Ron Sweat writes: DOES ANYONE THINK THAT RECRUITING AT UGA IS HANDLED OR DIRECTED LIKE IT SHOULD? Bill, how do we handle recruiting at UGA? Do we call all the recruits for the next 4 years every day or once a week or month and does an assistant make the call or a coach or [recruiting coordinator Rodney] Garner?

Ron, I gather you aren’t entirely satisfied with the way recruiting is being handled at UGA. Let me say up front, I’m not a recruitnik and don’t follow it that closely until we get closer to signing day. I will admit I was disappointed by some recruiting trends in recent years in Athens (such as the now abandoned reliance on fast but short cornerbacks), but I find it difficult to condemn a recruiting program that could produce this year’s Dream Team.

Anyway, I put your question to our recruiting blogger, Michael Carvell, and here’s what he said: “If they are asking about the quality of UGA’s recruiting efforts, you can only base on it on the finished efforts of last year, which was the ‘Dream Team.’ We’re still a long way from National Signing Day 2012. As far as how recruiting is handled, I’m sure the appropriate UGA coaches call during the NCAA contact periods.”

GET TO KNOW YOUR SEC COACHES

Here’s a fun feature from ESPN in which they put a bunch of questions (not necessarily about football) to the SEC head coaches. Some sound like guys you’d want to hang out with. And then there’s Bobby Petrino.

Don’t worry. From the reports coming out of Athens he won’t even be close to being another HW.

IC only needs to worry about being the best player he can possibly be. That is the only thing he can control. He will never be HW,KM or Musa. He will not be Lattimore or Dyer. The young man just needs to work hard and make plays and the rest will sort itself out.

No, they don’t need him to be the next Herschel. A Michael Dyer type of impact is more preferable. That way he has time to grow into a leading role as the season rolls on, just like Dyer did with Cam last year. But they do NEED Herschel as a RB Coach and recruiter. I’m willing to bet he would be more valuable in those two roles than any current member of the staff.

Bill,

You are absolutely right about the 24/7 info flow. It is hurting a lot of businesses including sports. The news as you well know can hardly cover a unfolding event around the world before citizen journalists have sent photos and videos to relatives, etc. e.g. the middle east wars. to much info too fast. And all of it unverified.

I do wonder from time to time,

That if Georgia Tech spent less time “loving to hate” UGA, and obsessing about all things and news coming out of Athens, and invest that energy in supporting their program……

If they would be able to fill their High School stadium and perhaps get out of the ESPN3.com streaming coverage.

Keep hating, nerds. It makes it sweeter and sweeter every Thanksgiving watching you whine and cry.

Timely play calling will be the most important thing. I am sure IC can run and break tackles (he’ll need to if we lose more lineman) but Bobo’s play calling will be crucial. Does Bobo travel to other schools and observe other offensive schemes like other coaches do? Also, take a gamble from time to time. Weapons are there, how’s he going to use them?

“Still@thebar” is simply a troll.

He has been on these blogs for years trying to rip anything UGA and spread rumors like the one he is attempting to right now with the supposed “attitude” of Crowell.

The best thing would be to ignore him, though that will unfortunately never happen with the level of immaturity that runs rampant on these blogs.

My best advice for people is to NEVER read the comments, and if you want to associate with and discuss UGA football with other true Dawgs fans, go to other sites/blogs where it is more possible.

A UGA backfield with Boo Malcom, Richard Samuel and Carlton Thomas and his cousin Hartley? and yes, Crowell, will be a huge on paper improvement vs that lazy Caleb King and that loser Easy Does it. These last two could only be counted on for causing PROBLEMS that affected the entire team. BOTH GONE NOW. Cancer free UGA is for now.

So, if these first four running backs come in and practice hard, mature and produce on game day, UGA is better off. Neither Caleb nor Washed Up could pull their leg away on a tackle. NEVER. They were small but slow.

@tOSU: Ignorance is not attractive.

So HW was a one-season wonder? Failed at everything else in life?

He set an NCAA freshman single-season rushing record his first year and led the team to a national title. He played 3/4 of the national title game with a separated shoulder against Notre Dame and had 150 yards rushing against a Notre Dame team that had not allowed 100 yards rushing to any team all year. He still hold the all-time SEC career rushing record with nearly 5300 yards and 52 TDs despite only playing three seasons. He won the Heisman as a junior and turned pro afterward, playing with the New Jersey Generals and setting a professional single-season rushing record with over 2411 yards rushing. He rushed for 5562 yards in three USFL seasons. He then moved on to the NFL, where he had career totals of 8225 yards rushing and 61 rushing TDs, 4859 receiving yards and 21 receiving TDs as well as 5082 kickoff return yards and 2 return TDs. His NFL total offense yardage of 18,168 yards (with 84 NFL touchdowns) is eighth all-time in the NFL among running backs. His combined rushing yardage of 13,787 yards for both the USFL and NFL would rank him fifth all-time in professional football history. He is a fifth-degree black belt in taekwondo, has raced with the U.S. Olympic bobsled team, danced with the Dallas ballet and has won both of his MMA bouts thus far by TKO. In addition, he is a millionaire businessman, with ProSports training facilities and a food distributorship. He’s in the college football Hall of Fame and was recently selected by ESPN is the greatest college running back of all time. He was also selected by the Associated Press as the greatest college football player at any position of the past half century.

So what’s Archie Griffin doing right about now? And how are things at that rancid, vermin-infested program in Columbus?

Great, that makes me feel better.

Evidently, our coaching staff doesn’t feel the need to be any more creative than last year if we already know that we won’t have (supposedly) 2 of our best athletes on the field at the same time at any point because they wear the same number..

Prepare for a long year boys if we don’t improve on stopping the other team on 3rd down.

I’m quickly losing faith in our coaching staff and the ability to adapt on the run and react to what the other team is doing on offense.

Turns out the kid seemed to have an attitude and was used to being treated like a prima donna all his life. Got to college, realized he wasn’t so great after all, and now he is a nobody.

Darrell Scott the no. 1 rated running back the year before eventually signed with Colorado amid much hoopla. He got beat out for the tailback position by a 3 star tailback recruit who took the job and kept it. Scott I believe never amounted to more than 3rd team.

Half of these great tb recruits turn out to be the real deal. Half of them- the ones with overblown egos, a sense of entitlement, and attitude, always turn out to be busts. Which character traits seem to typify how Mr. Crowell will turn out?

The young man will do just fine. Nobody expects him to be the next HW. They kind of broke the mold after he went pro. IC just needed to get a little reality training form some of his team mates and a few coaches and he will be fine now. It is hard for any super athlete from high school to transition to a college team at first, because in high school, his talents were superior to most of the player on his and opposing teams. In the college game, there are a lot of super athletes and just like in high school, he will have to prove himself once again. The young man is immensely talented and has all the skills to be a top back in the country. I think he has now tasted some humble pie, and the UGA team leaders have talked to him, so once he gets his feet under him and is fully disseminated into the game plan, teams had better watch out. The only thing that can slow him down, once he gets going this season will be injuries and hopefully, he will steer clear of them.

We just need the OL to open up some holes and it will not matter who is carrying that rock. It would be nice to have a game changer but having a solid back with a good OL will win plenty of games. We just need to win the battle up front on D and O and we will be fine.

It was all started by a desperate coaching staff who was looking for any bright point to save their jobs after they have dismantled the UGA program.

So they came up with this “Dream” team nonsense for a class which doesn’t even reach the ranking level of many other UGA classes for the past 10 years. So the coaches threw these kids under the bus it they along don’t save the program in order to save their jobs. Just hope UGA fans do not end up scream at these young men come October.

UGA is currently suffering under a recruiting delusion where Georgia High school football is overvalued and UGA is ALWAYS ranked high because they are the only school in the state who gets most of the Georgia High School players, so the coaching staff became lazy. Simply taking the highest ranked Georgia High School talent without doing any actual player talent appraisal, UGA has ended up with bust after bust, not because ofr the kids but because of the coaches and recruiting services. The same thing happened to FSU, where the recruiters instantly raised the recrtuiting ranking of a player if he was offered by FSU.

Anybody that watches any film of him at work at UGA, is either dumb or a UGA hater, (not that any of those types of people would ever come onto a blog, that concerns UGA) if they can deny that he was not a great player. When Archie Griffin played for ohio, I beleive it was called 3 yards and a cloud of dust football, by their coach then. HW went on to a very good professional career, Archie griffin didn’t amount to much. But hey, he is an officer in the ohio alumni association now, so that should give him hero status.

@I hate Georgia:

I set the record straight about HW’s pro career in an earlier post. Want it again? Fine–here it is:

Herschel set an NCAA freshman single-season rushing record his first year and led the team to a national title. He played 3/4 of the national title game with a separated shoulder against Notre Dame and had 150 yards rushing against a Notre Dame team that had not allowed 100 yards rushing to any team all year. He still hold the all-time SEC career rushing record with nearly 5300 yards and 52 TDs despite only playing three collegiate seasons.

Herschel won the Heisman as a junior and turned pro afterward, playing with the New Jersey Generals and setting a professional single-season rushing record with over 2411 yards rushing.

I’d hardly call that a “bust.” Most running backs in the league only last a year or two. HW played professionally from 1984-1997.

Archie Grffin’s career NFL stats: 2808 yards rushing, 7 rushing TDs, and 1607 yards receiving for 6 TDs. Herschel outgained Archie professionally by 11,000 yards rushing and 7000 yards receiving–and scored 71 more touchdowns in his NFL career alone. There’s really no comparison. Griffin’s best NFL year saw him gain ~1000 yards total offense–once. Walker gained over 1000 yards total offense in each of his twelve NFL seasons.

Ctown, great points, but I think he was fourth in ‘99. Crowell has plenty of talent and his frustration in the Calhoun game is better explained as a competitive spirit–he hates getting beat and allowed himself to get frustrated. That, to me, is a good sign. Some of the greatest athletes in history have had to overcome immature competitive spirits when they were young. The fact that he hates losing will drive him where he needs to go. It may take longer than Sep of ‘11, though. Calhoun was thrilled to hold him to about 100 yds and about 5 yds/carry. Obviously, the big run was called back, so they got some help. I’m excited that we have a kid who gets upset over being held to just under 100. I think he won’t quit until he succeeds at the next level. I also believe that Malcome is a tremendous talent who will be very hard to tackle if he can get healthy.

One other point Ctown made, Sanks’ career was sunk off the field. The on field performance wasn’t what everybody expected, but off the field is what stopped him cold. As Richt said at the time–there is right and there is wrong; if you don’t do right it may cost you your career (loosely paraphrased). Off field really hurt Ealey and King, too. IC needs to understand that off the field problems are among the biggest threats to his career at UGA and to any subsequent pro aspirations. Even average UGA tailbacks have had pro careers, with some being outstanding, but he has to study, work hard, and stay out of trouble. If he does that, I suspect he will have a bright future.

Sixty-eight Georgia players have been named All-Americans; eleven are in the College Football Hall of Fame. There are currently 40 former Georgia players active in the NFL.

You’re a fool. And if you’re the last person to leave the Rust Belt, turn the lights out.

Crowell doesn’t have to come in and compete for a starting spot, he just needs to provide murray with some balance and actually make the first tackler miss every once in a while.

As for the jersey’s, I like it. Almost all the top teams have worn these combat jersey’s and the players like it. As for changing the color schemes, I’ve always like the black pants they were many years ago. I think people make too big of a deal about the jersey changes being a negative thing.

2008, you recall, we were ranked # 1 in the nation by every single solitary poll. Then, that night, 22 players went out on the town and had a party celebrating it. Then, we played 3 teams who were any good at all. And, gave up consecutive points of 29, 31 and 42 points against in all 3 games – losing all 3. Richard Samuel had the fumble against Georgia tek, as you might recall 2008 in Georgia tek’s run of 29 consecutive points, to beat us. Richard Samuel also had the fumble to begin the season against lowly Georgia Southern of 1-AA Championship Subdivision game. As a matter of fact, for 2008, besides Matthew Stafford’s 5 fumbles putting the ball on the carpet and up for grabs, Richard Samuel led our beloved Georgia Bulldogs’ football team in fumbles all of 2008. Not only did Richard Samuel fumble the football against both Georgia Southern and Georgia tek, he nor any of his teammates recovered Richard Samuel’s fumbles 2008.

19 fumbles 2008 will look like we never fumbled the football at all, compared to the huge number of times we put the ball on the carpet and up for grabs 2011. Just wait. Tell me I am wrong now and then run and hide with your Excuses after this season is over. I have already predicted a record number of fumbles for 2011 for UGA, and of course our offense is notorious for having no training not only on not fumbling, but on not recovering our own fumbles either. Like Richard Samuel’s 2008.

2008, Richard Samuel played in 11 games, missing only Arizona State and the last game against Michigan State.

26 carries for 113 yards, a 5.11 yards per carry average – not counting his fumbles glaring fumbles – and 1 TD run. Richard Samuel also in 2008, made 2 catches for 11 yards and no TD and 19 kick-off returns for 401 return yards 2008. 3 assisted tackles and 1 solo tackle on special teams for 2008. This is Richard Samuel Freshman season 2008. Ramarcus Brown, you may recall shared kick-off return duties with Richard Samuel, with Ramarcus doing them the early games, and like I say Richard Samuel with 6 kick-off returns at the end of the season against Georgia tek, not the least of which was the one at the goal line costing us the ball game against Georgia tek – fumble that is at our own goal line. Remember ? All of us did all Spring and all Summer. Yes, indeed 2008, Knowshon Moreno had 1,822 all-purpose yards for UGA and then was gone after just 2 seasons, because we Redshirted him – so that we could see him only 2 years and then selected as the # 12 best football player in the world after this 2008 season. Since, unlike Matthew Stafford, he has proven he is one of the best in the world .

2009 Richard Samuel, still by this wondrous coaching staff Mark Richt assembles, is installed as the Starter at TB for UGA. 2009 in the loss to Okie State, Richard Samuel is Starter. We lost. South Carolina game, and then Arkansas, still starter – as you recall. Arkansas he puts the ball on the carpet again. He never played again, not really. Against Arizona State the next week, a truly horrid football team, we squeaked out a 20-17 win against this cupcake with Richard Samuel having 11 carries for 28 yards – 2 yards a carry against this cupcake. The most carries Richard Samuel would get after that 4th game were 6 all season long and that against Vandie. 6 carries for 19 yards – 3 yards a carry vs Vandie another cupcake.

Brain trust coaching staff of Mark Richt then rips the Redshirt off the # 13 running back in the nation, Washaun Ealey – this is in the 3rd quarter of the 5th game 2009. We lost that game any way, with AJ Green’s penalty in the end zone – hot dogging in college and pleading he should get away with it. Truth be told, it was a close call. But, let’s be honest here.

Caleb Darnell King was supposed to be the TB not Richard Samuel and not Washaun Ealey.

This is what we are left to discuss now for 2011 that Richard Samuel was not back-up to Knowshon Moreno 2009, but to Washaun Ealey who stole his job when Caleb King was supposed to be the # 1 football player in the state of Georgia, and was a total abject FLOP his entire career here against any team with any semblance of a rush defense.

22 fumbles 2009 by UGA.

A number which will once again pale by comparison to the record number we put up 2011.

Of course of the 22 fumbles by us 2009, Joe Cox led the team with 7. Caleb King had 2. And, again, Richard Samuel in his game 3 against Arkansas, which we won anyway; and, still Richard Samuel never really got on the field after that. Not really. He was cut way way back and phased out altogether. This was Richard Samuel’s Sophomore year.

Then, sent to the defense.

Then, not ready, redshirted in what should have been his Junior year last year. Recall again, Richard Samuel was supposed to be in the NFL after last year. Coming back to you on that ?

Thomas Brown

July 30th, 2011
11:14 pm

Fast forward to 2011, and this is supposed to be his Senior year he was never supposed to be here for. But, he is. And, not checkered career by any mean, by all means, by no means to this point with no expectations of anything different. But, again our Starter at TB. Wonderful.

Redshirt Junior year, 2011 for Richard Samuel, he did not play 1 down all season 2010. Can we blame 2010 on Richard Samuel or the coaching staff who so jerks around Richard Samuel ? I think obviously on both parts. He is already supposed to have gone to the NFL according to every UGA fan I read all 2 million of us in 2007 and 2008 when we recruited him here we thought for 3 years before NFL stardom.

2010, his Junior year, Richard Samuel should have been so deployed by this mis-managing coaching staff of Mark Richt that he would have assisted us in winning games – instead we have the luxury of having him on the sidelines spending the year and a half learning how to play Linebacker in this 3-4. Now, with 21 practices if it doesn’t rain us without an indoor practice facility we install him back at Starter # 1 at TB.

Oh, I almost left out 2010 without Richard Samuel, we fumbled the football 20 times with 9 of the 20 fumbles last season by Aaron Murray. Again, these numbers for 2010 will pale by comparison with the record number of fumbles 2011 by us. A number I expect to reach closer to 30 fumbles, putting the ball on the carpet and up for grabs – something this offense does not do well at all, recovering their own fumbles.

With so many Trolls’ and UGA haters on here (I am not an UGA fan, but i follow UGA closely and respect program) it has gotten out of hand. We need a seperate blog for serious discussion and the numb nuts can have therw rants on a seperate blog. It does appear the UGA program is down, but with college kids you can turn it around quickly and one never knows what will happen in any given year. But we can be sure that come the end of the season, the NC will come from SEC. Who gives a crap about OSU, Penn State, Michigan, etc… Football is a Southern thing. I would rather watch Vandy play Kentucky than watch the OSU/Michigan game or any game with Notre Dame! I am sure Beano Cook disagree’s with me, but TV rating indicate most folks feel like I do. “Weapons are there, how’s he going to use them?”
******************************************
I assume that was a rhetorical question, Augustadawg, but if it wasn’t, I’ll give it a shot.

Bobo “uses a weapon,” like Brandon Smith, by bringing him in the game during a series, for one play, usually some type of reverse, that everybody in the stadium knows is coming.

Then he takes “the weapon” out until a couple of quarters later, when he tries the exact same play again.

I guarantee you if Urban Myer would have had Smith, one of the fastest players in the country, on his team the last two seasons, he would have made him another Percy Harvin, putting the ball in his hands in a variety of ways, in open space.

Not Bobo.

Percy Harvin wasn’t a defensive back nor was he asked to play both ways, recruited to solely play offense. Smith has issues holding onto the ball and wants to play in CB. Bobo only plays the players he is given to play with, when the offense breaks down its usually due to lack of execution and not play calling. Now that Searles the “running game coordinator” is finally gone perhaps we will see better execution and line play.

AltamahaDawg

I’d be willing to bet that during Meyer’s career, he had DB that were just as fast as Smith and he did not play them on offense. For reasons. And how is it that Bobo’s problem is that he didn’t do what you are guessing one other coach out of hundreds might do. Surely you can criticize him for something he actually did do, not invent hypothetical stuff. (which is just as easy to hypothisize is incorrect)

PaPa Dawg,

Richard Samuel has only been the featured back in 3 games.

3 fumbles.

Again, I guarantee that Georgia fumbles the football

30 times this season, putting the ball up for grabs – and we do a poor job of teaching our offensive players not to fumble (how to hold the football) and we do a poor job of teaching our offensive players how to recover fumbles.

Still, 2011, PaPaw Dawg, we will sir fumble the ball, putting it up for grabs, 30 times. Record pace. You make it sound like we will not PaPa Dawg. Coming back January 2012 to check on that ?

Only real comment I have it to the Ohio State idiot-To compare Herschel Walker to the one’s he compared him to is like comparing Bear Bryant to “Tressle”. Slydog also said it well SEC has and always will dominate OSU.
One more thing-No one ever will ever compare to Herschel Walker!!!!! This should be even simple enough for a OSU fan to understand.

No one knows what a true freshman will do. Lattimore was no HW but we couldn’t have asked for more from anyone. USC fans didn’t know Latt would do what he did. You shouldn’t put so much hype on anyone player. I hope Clowney is brought along slowly it would be silly to think he was going to come in and be ALL-SEC in his first year. I don’t like the hype these kids get it’s to much pressure to early. IMO that’s why there are so many bust with top prospects(That and work ethic).

HW was great but so are many others that played the game. Stop looking at the past and don’t count the wins before they come. OSU has a good program just like UGA has a good program. He will not reply on-topic to that question anymore than he did why he thought we would win The SEC East last year – at the end of 5 years, which is obviously on-topic he was replying to and just as obviously that I said that we would not be The SEC East Champion last year and that the reason would be that Aaron Murray would not run the football 8 carries a game for less than 2 yards a carry with 9 of our 20 fumbles by Aaron Murray, and that the offense would suck, no matter how well the defense improved. Yes, with that schedule last year, we should have been 12-2.

This season, we should be 11-3, with this soft easy schedule of 10 games of the 12 regular season game against teams who average the # 65 team. You see SSlgator, with AltamahawDawg no one is allowed to say anything but how great we are.

And, then there is reality, and he runs and hides all season long – like RED DOG 77 did last year too on our route to 6-7. 7 Losses , having to go all the way back 58 years to 1953 to find a season in which we lost more than the 7 games little Aaron Murray lost last season – all 7 of which found the other QB out-played him on the field, head-to-head.

We had all kinds of issues last season coming into the season, just as we have had 26 players who will now not suit up for Boise State this off-season.

Pre-season, AltamahawDawg and RED DOG 77 want to tell us Mark Richt will win 10 games, and then say how close we were to that at 6. We play or could play 14 games every year. Winning 10 is not cutting it this season either. To go 11-3, we lose to Alabama, LSU or Arkansas in The SEC Championship Game in this DOWN SEC EAST. We beat no one of consequence this season, and if we do, we will lose 1 game (as we do every year) against a team who does not finish in the Top 25.

Boy are we great at # 27 in the Rivals Rankings today. By the way, they both this time last year guaranteed that we would win the national championship THIS SEASON.

YOU said we would loss 6 juniors to the NFL draft. YOU said we would graduate all those of seniors that would really make us a worse team. YOU said Murray was too fragile last year. Not a good player. YOU said Brantley would have a fine 2010 at Florida, becsue he was so much better prepared. YOU said Alabama would win the SEC. RED DOG 77,

I see you are man enough to admit you said it, and again say exactly the same this season predicting your SEC Championship – like we are better than Alabama, LSU and Arkansas, if and only if we arrive in JAX undefeated. I still say you and AltamahawDawg are joined at the hip.

And, both so much a better Bulldogs’ fan than I because you say how great we are. I say we should be 11-3 this season, and frankly you all have said how much better we are than Florida. How much better we are than South Carolina and how much better we are than Boise State. 2 of out 3 ain’t bad. I don’t think we will beat any team on consequence, and that means The SEC West Champ in this DOWN East of The SEC. And, will not play a team who finishes in the Top 10 AP Poll in our bowl game either. I figure we are playing what Rivals calls and ranks 10 games against teams with an average Rivals Ranking of # 65.

You figure that is somehow great that we win 10 games. “Be just fine.” Been a mantra around here. “We will be just fine 2011.” Uh, losing 26 players from the Boise State game already, and another 11 injured or surgery, is not just fine. The facts are we play a soft easy schedule this season. It is impossible for me to keep RED DOG 77 and AltamahawDawg in my mind other than 1 and the same. But, at least RED DOG 77 has an expectation. That is more than can be said for AltamahawDawg, who of course, does not – he says, if you believe that LIE. He has an expectation, but does not want to discuss it, and for the life of me, that makes no sense whatsoever. Follow a team, root for a team, and no expectation. Anyone believe that ?

Must be getting closer to kick off time. All the jerks are out in force and can’t wait for a new article with anything about UGA, to spout their pathetic attempt at being witty.
If any of these negative blogger had half an ounce of brains, they would realize that psychological warfare, only works when they person can deliver it in person to a captive audience. Like a prisoner for instance. Interestingly enough, they are the prisoners of their own stupidity, so they are actually the ones being persuaded in their own minds, not the UGA fans. UGA fans have already won, because the prisoners are are already so worried, that they are trying
to form barriers and platforms for their defense. In other words, you are gonna get your butt handed to you when UGA plays you, so you have set up your defensive mechanisms ahead of time. Fear is your motivator, not superior skills or intelligence. You fear UGA and are jealous of the players, the team, the coaches, the fans and the great institution it is. I feel sorry sort of in a way, a soldier feels, just before he pulls the trigger, to end the enemies life.
It leaves such a mess if you do it right.
I don’t think it is right to call these folks Trolls, anymore. I think I will just call them “Prisoners Of UGA”. It has a nice ring to it.

IMHO as always the Dawgs prospects for this season rests on whether we can run and DO RUN the football successfully and whether we can consistently stop the other team on D. To be a consistent winner in football you have to control the line of scrimmage either through brute force or through misdirection/finesse etc. History has shown that brute force is best but at times you have to do the other as well.

Beating Walker’s per carry average is not too hard, Moreno, King & Ealey all beat it. But beating Walker’s 1 td per 20 carries ratio is tough, Ealey beat it in 2010.

The Next Walker:
1) Protecting the ball
2) Getting the yards in big games at key times (better know as LEADERSHIP)
3) staying injury free
4) staying out of trouble (LEADERSHIP)
5) getting over 5 ypc
6) averaging 1 td every 20 carries

That’s what it takes to be Walker like.

Lattimore is the guy who might break Herschel’s records. And might rival Walker’s leadership.

But on the current team, Samuel has a better shot than Crowell.

WDE

@Al good points however I don’t see Lattimore at this time ever beating HW’s records..one I have to see if he can copy last year’s effort now that he will have that bulleye on his back. Lattimore’s on track to beat Herschel’s td record by the end of his Junior Season. Also, Lattimore put up @200 in the 2 biggest games of th year against div rivals Florida & Georgia. Lattimore rarely fumbles, misses few quarters due to injury, and is around the 5 ypc, and 1-20 td to carry ratio.

Al

Oh Darn, we have been duped by a fake buckeye. How will we now know when the real buckeye is present and the imposter is not. I guess, only the AJC knows for sure, since they have the actual email address of the imposter.
Now since this imposter is on between 3 and 4 PM. we can narrow it down a bit. Just find the McDonalds that gives their employees lunch hours between 3 and 4 PM. Of course it could be free time, for unsupervised activities at the state prison and he may have access to a computer for that hour. I now stand corrected and will ignore Buckeye from 3-4 PM. He cheats though, since he was here from 1:36-4:30 PM today. His comments also were so insightful. I am crushed. A third option could be, it is the time his mommy is taking a nap, as she would be tired from taking care of him all day, and changing his diapers, so he sneeks onto the computer while she is snoozing.

Stay tuned...

I am so glad that you are so Satisfied with our 21 Losses over these last 5 years. That is 2006, not 2008. An average of in excess of 4 Losses per season, over the last entire 5 seasons.

SEC East has been down for this time. In fact there only has been 1 team in The SEC East over these last 5 years, and now they are down too.

Yet, here we are and Mark Richt and his “coaching staff” assembled by him with he and only he responsible for them, and if they do not beat South Carolina in game 2, then they will not even have a winning record vs The SEC East over these last entire 5 years.

Pardon me for expecting more than that. I understand that me predicting that we will be 11-3 this season means that the expectations are high for this football program missing 26 players for the Boise State game. Obviously, you don’t want high expectations – because well that would mean we would have to go out and not lose to a bad team, something we have done around here once a year on the average for 10 years running now. And, because high expectations mean that we would beat a top team finishing in the Top 10 AP Poll, something we have done around here 3 times in 12 games over these 10 years.

11-3 I do not see as anything significant. We play 10 games vs teams averaging # 65 in the Rivals Rankings this morning. I figure our bowl opponent to be – well, like the bowl opponents we have played for these last 10 years, a nobody team not on the national stage both of us ranked in the Top 10 at the end of the season, facing off in a storied game of national stage.

It’s not what we do. What we do is lose to a team not finishing in the Top 25 and lose to the teams finishing in the Top 10. We have done that for 10 years, now. I see nothing different on that front whatsoever this season. No reason to. It is what we do.

I don’t have to like it, or accept it. In fact, I don’t and in fact you are satisfied. # 23 in won/loss record over these last 5 years now is not what I signed up for, for our # 11 all-time program in 1-A wins.

Now, I return you to your feel good posts about how great we will be 2011, oh, without saying what number is great – given our 10 known opponents of the regular season averaging # 65 Rivals Rankings today. You see that is why you criticize me, and in the same post answering that question, are wholly unable to post what our record will be this 14-game season coming up. 11-3.

Red,

I beleive the only thing that will hurt UGA this year, is inexperience. I wish we had more time on the field but this team could still be special. They will for sure need to be coached up, but I think there is a new atomosphere at UGA now, and the team, coachs and even the AD seem to be high spirited. I don’t know how many games they will win this year, but I do think they will be ready to play, and if mistakes can be kept to a minimum, they could surprise a lot of folks they play. The good thing about having nobody expect you to win, is they look past you, and tend to discount your heart and desire. Hopefully, some do, and they might just leave the field, on the short end of the stick. We have some very talented young men on this team, and if the learning curve can be increased a bit, they could surprise a few folks. Either way, I remain a loyalist, which I guess some folks take exception to, but hey, that is the way life is.

Homer more like, not loyalist.

Loyalists looks at 10 regular season games against 10 opponents averaging # 65 in the nation in the Rivals Rankings this morning, and says we will win all 10 of those.

Homer says, oh wow, we are going to be special this one season 2011. No idea how good we will be, but we will be good; but, young. Young. Notice Young, but no discussion by Homer that we have 26 Scholarship player who were supposed to be playing against Boise State, who will not. Not 1 of the 26. See the list, oh well those guys were a cancer to the team. Now, that those 26 – whom you gave great credit to this coaching staff for bringing here – are addition by attrition. Right. No depth, you say ? Duh. Why is that, the loyalists ask ?

Homer has no discussion on the 10 games this coaching staff assembled has lost in 10 years now against teams who did not finish even in the Top 25.

Homer has no discussion of the 9 losses in 12 games over 10 years so far against teams who did finish in the AP Poll Top 10.

Loyalists point out that 21 Losses 5 years and # 23 won/lost 5 years and 13-12 vs Down SEC East 5 years and 0 appearances SEC Championship Game 5 years – all last 5 years, is not good, unacceptable and that the players and coaches OBVIOUSLY need to be told to GATA.

Homer, oh, no. Just say how special they will be. And, try to tell us all how very ultra-satisfied you are with Mark Richt’s “coaching staff” performing all this mis-management of our talent – and whistle into the night how this season, somehow never discussed, will be different somehow. I said it last year and I say it this year : We will Lose to teams who do not finish in the Top 25 and will lose to teams who finish in the Top 10, because that is what we have done for 10 years and now and without 26 scholarship players now gone from this roster, we most assuredly have nothing different for this season than we have the previous 10 on both these groups of very good teams and sorry football teams. Coach them up ? Right. Man Never Is, but To Be Blest.

Bill,

Any reason people are so big on TE Charles over TE White?

I’d think White’s 82% catch rate compared with Charles’ 56% catch rate would make starting White over Charles a slam dunk. Per catch average and td’s about the same, Charles is a little higher per catch average, not enough to make up for the fact he drops 1/2 the balls thrown his way.

These are the dumb things Richt does I don’t understand.

Boise State 222, UGA 0 >>>> The beatdown of the year.

After the game, a UGA player who reads, writes, and speaks at a 4th grade level will be interviewed on TV, and millions of viewers will wonder why Mark Richt recruits these dummies and why UGA admits them.

It makes you long for the days when ethical UGA coaches like Wallace Butts and Harry Mehre recruited literate athletes who actually earned serious college degrees.

If you doubt this, go back and read Caleb King’s farewell tweet. The guy couldn’t even write a coherent sentence. This simpleton should have been sweeping floors somewhere, not enrolled in college.

Mark Richt and the University of Georgia are a disgrace to this state.

You haven’t earned the right in life to insult me you moron. I am entitled to my opinion and you to yours. I believe last year you called yourself bulldawg or some such dribble, and I imagine next year you will have a new name. You certainly shouldn’t be using a former UGA players name. You spout more B.S. on here than a politician delivers at a campaign rally. You always think your point is valid and anybody disagreeing with that point is always wrong. Let me tell you something buddy, you are a legend in your own mind. I am mad at myself for even bothering to read your dribble.
In the future I am just going to ignore you, as you are not worthy of my spending time to reply to your moronic view of things. I hope some day you find a way to be happy without insulting other people and learn how to intelligently disagree with them, but I doubt you ever will. Some people in life, just never grow up and have adult conversations or discussions. In the service, we just finally discharged them for not being able to adapt to military service, but in the outside world, they usually discount themselves by their own stupidity and failure to grow up. No matter what your chronological age, you have shown that you can not act like an adult.

Bill,

Junkyard Mail Question:

What’s up with the hype over Murray—what is it based on?
The kid threw for a lot of yards, but he made 30 attempts a game compared to 18 for Jefferson against winning teams. Murray finished 11th out of 12 SEC QB’s for accurcy against winning teams, yet ranked near the top against loser teams. Murray went 6-1 against losing teams, and 0-6 against winning teams. He went 6-2 against unranked teams, and 0-5 against ranked teams. Only 5 of Murray’s 24 td’s came against ranked teams, 19 came against inferior competition. Murray had a veteran line, backs and receivers, and went 6-7 as a starter. Murray also took dozens of sacks and had an extremely low rushing average due to running a lot in passing situations. Murray is among the bottom all ALL QB’s in almost every major category: 3rd down accuracy, red zone passing td’s, red zone accuracy, 4th quarter scoring, 4th quarter accuracy, etc. If Murray’s so good, why is his record against good teams 0-5?

Lex,

that is not as bad as returning Garcia to the team, when he was never really suspended anyway. Spurrier called it a partial suspension when asked about it, since he was allowed to participate in all team activities and workouts. That is the first time I have ever heard of a partial suspension. Sort of like serving probation before you have served some time, LOL. I think that fiasco was Spurrier’s way of originally trying to save face and acting like he controlled Garcias future on that team. We all know about Stevie’s ego, so we knew it was all an act, to CYA. Stevie would play a convicted murderer, if he could get away with it, so he could have a better chance at a win. Gotta love the hypocrisy of some folks don’t you? Unless, his other QB, has improved quite a bit, he wasn’t satisfied with him in the spring, he said, so Garcia might have been his only option.

For you freshmen, keep your eyes and ears open, and your mouths humble. This ain’t high school. There’s some stud out there looking to make the highlight film at your expense.
For God’s sake, know that most of this stuff on here is foolishness. You get the opportunity and the honor to do it between the hedges. Give it your best shot. It is kind of narrow minded and shows a lack of understanding about the game of football, if you think one man is responsible for the play of the whole team and therefore, Murray “LOST” the games against teams with a winning record all by himself.
A QB is the center of the offense in that he handles the baal first, but he doesn’t miss assignments, let a rusher get on his butt, fumble at the goal line, miss tackles or miss an assignment by himself. A team is composed of 11 players working together to achieve a goal.
