Should Mark Richt’s job ride on winning the SEC East?

Predictions about what it will take to save Mark Richt's job are all over the place. (AJC file)

Predictions about what it will take to save Mark Richt's job are all over the place. (AJC file)

While we brace ourselves for the inevitable new round of Mark-Richt-on-the-hot-seat talk with the arrival of the SEC’s annual media days, it’s interesting to see the way expectations of what Richt needs to do to keep his job vary.

Recently we discussed here how many wins we thought Richt needed to get this season to keep his job, and the consensus appears to be that 10 wins was a sure thing, nine probably would save him and if it was eight, it would depend on whether that number included a victory over Florida.

But while South Carolina appears still to be most prognosticators’ favorite to win the SEC East, Georgia has popped up in quite a few predictions as the dark horse to take the division, and CollegeFootball News even goes so far as to posit that if the Dogs don’t win the East, Richt won’t be back.

Their all-or-nothing reasoning goes like this: “The timing couldn’t be better to come out of the blue and be a major player in the SEC. Florida probably has one more year before it becomes a monster again, Tennessee is still sleeping, and South Carolina, as good as it is, is still South Carolina; there’s going to be a gaffe or two along the way. Georgia might have a ton of flaws, and it might be relying on a slew of unknowns to carry the way, but the East is never going to get easier than it is right now, and Richt has to take advantage. … No, Georgia won’t be 2010 Auburn, but it could rise up and be good enough to win the East and play for the SEC title. And if not, next year will be all about a new era in Georgia football.”

Summing up its preview of Georgia, CFN says, “The season will be a success if … the Dawgs win the East. When you miss the three best teams from the West — Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas — and get South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Auburn at home, you have to take advantage of it. There are major holes on the offensive line, receiver, and linebacker, but the schedule is favorable, the influx of new talent should be a boost, and the desperation is there to win the East. Winning the SEC title is a stretch considering how good the West champion will be, but getting to the title game will be enough for Richt to stick around.”

At the other extreme, the Macon Telegraph asks whether Richt’s recruiting prowess and the commitments he keeps snagging might not be enough for him to keep his job even if the Dogs have another subpar year on the field, simply because a coaching change might send some of those recruits elsewhere.

I’m not buying either of those scenarios.

While winning the SEC East would surely boost Richt’s stock quite a bit, I don’t believe his job is riding on it. At the same time, if the wheels come off and Georgia has a disaster of a season, I don’t think nonbinding verbal commitments from some blue-chip recruits who may or may not pan out down the road are going to be enough to save Richt. That will still come down to wins and losses.

What do you think?

SILVER LINING

While I’m dismayed yet another Georgia running back has gotten himself in trouble, I have to admit the first thought I had when I heard Carlton Thomas likely won’t be playing against Boise State was that at least Mike Bobo won’t be tempted to run him up the middle on third-and-long.

I don’t think it rides on wins/losses or winning the East. Would a 7-5 record that won the East keep Coach Richt’s job? Would an 11-1 record without playing in the Dome for the second time this season keep his job?

If we GATA, see much improvement in the defense, and promise on offense, Coach Richt will keep his job.

Richt needs to finish in the top 25 in the national rankings. That means 9 or 10 wins. Be nice to beat South Carolina to win the East, since Florida has that brutal October schedule of Alabama, LSU, Auburn and Georgia.

You figure Richt gets 4 wins against these losing teams:
Coastal Carolina, New Mexico St, Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss

Richt should win these 3 against unranked teams:
Georgia Tech, Kentucky, and Tennessee

Richt will just need to win 2 of these 5 against ranked teams:
Boise, South Carolina, Auburn, Florida, and Mississippi St.

Beat Florida, and go 8-4, Richt still should be fired.

Top 25 or Bust.

we got blown out last year by Auburn. We got blown out twice the year before by UT and UF. Blown out by Bama and UF the year before that. MR is not a fine coach – he’s a great offensive coordinator who lucked out by having a crappy SEC in ‘02 and an oppossing coach who can be just as suspect in the ‘05 SECCG.

What good is it if you can’t develop the talent when they get there or, worse yet, do not even have the ability to hack it on the academic side.

I am refusing to buy into the doom and gloom until the results warrant it. Richt refuses to play everybody else’s game of cheating, lying and making promises to kids and then backing out of the promise later.

Maybe it is the way of the world but it is interesting to me how quiet it is in Athens this summer. Word I get is that the players are working their butts off and staying out of trouble and not listening to the naysayers.

All of the Richt haters and UGA opponents better hope he flops again because if he ever gets the talent to be disciplined and gets results from the S&C program, God help all of you.

To your blog topic Bill:

8-4 and beat Florida will keep him around
9-3 will do the same
10-2 and win the East and we have him around for another 5 years

I think SC will beat us. I also think we will lose on the road to UT.

If he is 2-3 after we play the Mississippi schools, he is done.

1)Win all the ones you are suppose to win;
2)Stay in the ones your not and win some of them;
3)No major breakdowns i.e. UCF, Colo, SC form 2010.
4)Play smart disciplined ball and with a ‘Junkg yard Dawg” attitude;
5)Show creativity, suprises, ability to adjust and game planning that keeps opponents off balance (100% coaching here; CMR better step in and show he can coach some coaches!)

If CMR raises the bar in all these areas, he will stay regardless of record.

I am expecting 9-11 W’s.

Kellen Moore completes 65% of his passes of 15+ yards, which is better than Murray’s 5 yard completion rate. Gonna be a long opening night for Georgia, Kellen Moore is going to bomb the defense all night long, and he usually doesn’t miss. Boise scored 30+ in every game against ranked teams except 1 last year, where they got 26 points. Boise will win, and South Carolina will win, Coach Richt will start 0-2, and need to go on some kind of run, 9 out of 10, to finish 9-3.

Long-time Dawg fan here, and…to me…it’s not just a matter of how many games we win or whether we win the East of not.
I want to see Georgia:
1. Not embarrass the fan base by having a lot of legal or academic troubles splashed all over the media.
2. Actually look like they are prepared for the game.
3. Play tough defense.
4. Continue their good special teams play of last season. (First year in many that the kickoff coverage was decent.)
5. Play to WIN, not just play to keep from losing. (Running a draw play off-tackle on third and long is a good call occasionally…but not four third-and-long downs in a row.)
6. Play power football…”finesse” football does not do well in the SEC.
7. No more gimmicks, especially about what we wear. If we need to black out a stadium to get up for Alabama, or wear special-colored helmets to get up for Florida…we shouldn’t be in the conference.
8. Maintain discipline. I hope to NEVER see Georgia players dancing and boogeying on the sidelines in the late fourth quarter of a game we’re losing. We’re not that FSU scum, and I want us to stop acting like it.
9. Beat the teams that we’re clearly better than, and beat them handily. It’d be nice to give our second string offense (for example) a chance to play the entire fourth quarter…and our second string QB a chance to run the offense without looking over his shoulder expecting to get pulled if he makes a mistake.

If we can play like a serious football team again, the winning will take care of itself.

Bill haven’t you heard that Richt won 2 SEC championships in 10 years, and he is the greatest coach that UGA has ever had. He also has beaten Tech 9 out of 10years. He isn’t on the hot seat and he never will be in some of these Ga. fans eyes. They don’t care if he has a .500 record in the SEC the past 3 years, or that he is 2 and 8 against Florida, which was the team he was hired to beat, and not Ga.Tech.Nor does it matter that he is the worst game day coach in the SEC, and that he has hired the worst offensive and defensive coordinators in the SEC. Nor does it matter that he has been at UGA 10 years and yet he has the least amount of depth of any of the top 6 or 7 programs in the conference. What matters to these UGA fans is that he is a Saint, and good ole boy, and he is a good spokesman for the school, and as long as he is competitve against Fl. and loses by only 2 touchdowns and he beats Tech, he will be their hero. Because UGA fans are different from fans at other SEC schools, they only want to have a program that is mediocre, because that is what they became accustomed to when Dooley was there, and that is the person they measure Richt to. So going 6-7 is no big deal to them, hell Dooley had several 6-5 seasons and he lasted 25 years. The way i see it, Richt has about 15 MEDIOCRE seasons left.

It’s likely Tennessee beats Georgia, after all, the home team is 4 & 0 in the last 4 meetings.

It’s likely Richt goes 1-4 against the 5 ranked teams (Auburn, Boise, SC, MSU, Florida). Since Richt is 2-9 vs. ranked teams since 2008. And 0-6 vs. winning teams last season.

That would bring the record to 1-5.

Richt would need to win all 6 of these games to finish 7-5:
New Mex, C Carolina, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss.

Win the Bowl, and finish 8-5. Richt’s Bowl record is solid, so he usually wins that game.

8-5.

What happened to all our linemen? Wasn’t it only a few years ago Mark Richt was basically saying he will never again be caught with low numbers on the O-line? regardless of injuries or attrition?
Whatever happened to that?
This is such a disturbing trend in his coaching tenure of lack of capable O-linemen.
Oh, he’ll go a couple years here and there when we supposedly have one of the strongest. Or maybe the strongest 1st 5 (until they get hurt) and then their depth destroys them.
And the D-line isn’t exactly what it once was with Seymour or Pollack along with others, were there.
Jeez, do we need to take every other year and devote 20 out of 25 scholarships to linemen?
Of course, the evaluation level has seemed to be a problem also. But that’s a whole new can of worms.
What ya’ll say…..

If this team shows improvement, Richt will keep his job. I know this upsets many of the fans on the message boards who would say UGA needs to win at least the east, but they are not the ones who make the decisions. And the bottom line is that those people are still strongly in his corner. In reality, I think that an 8 win season and he is safe. Now on the message boards, he will be fired if he doesn’t win the east. I don’t know why UGA does not have the same high standards that Alabama, Florida, and LSU have, but mediocrity and underachieving are acceptable at UGA. And it’s a shame considering the potential this program has to be one of the dominant powers in college football.

DawginLex

July 20th, 2011
11:51 am

Richt is a victim of his own success and now he has to pay the price with wins or leave.

The question facing McGarity is what does it take to warrant a change?

The ESPN folks like May and Herbstreit will be all over McGarity if Richt’s team shows improvement and wins 8 games or 9 and gets fired.

The bigger question is “Who do you hire and what guarantee do you have that UGA will win with a new coach?”

A lot of this stuff is timing. Dooley never had to face Spurrier at Florida. I can tell you, if Spurrier had been around in Dooley’s time, Dooley would have been run out of town. Dooley faced a series of idiots in charge down at Florida, not a HOF coach like Spurrier.

Why was Dooley’s bowl record so bad? Because the top coaches were in the bowl games and he wasn’t facing the stiffs from the SEC that were there during his time.

Richt faced Tebow. Meyer won titles because of Tebow and ran for the hills after Tim left. Florida won’t win another title without him. He is their Herschel.

No, Richt is a fine coach, but it’s his personnel decisions (players and coaches) that will simply lead to his down fall if they don’t rebound this year.

He doesn’t have the luxury of being a new coach anymore. Under his watch they went from average to very successful championship type of program back down to a below average team again.

I’m not sure he should be expected to win the east to keep his job, but maybe that is a good standard. It’s really been 5 years since they were a substantially good football team. That’s not acceptable.

I think he’s a fine coach, but he can’t continue to stay in charge of a program that loses to Colorado and UCF. Even though he’s a good guy, UGA isn’t a charity. His job is to win games as much as anything.

With all the setbacks recently in the OL and RB position we will
find out this year whether keeping CMR is the right path.
I say that because there is are enough ingredients on this
team like QB play and excellent special teams to offset a good bit
of the team’s weak areas. There are coaches out there that could
could could do this without question. If CMR is unable to do it
he is not the coach I nelieve him to be and not worthy to continue

DawginLex,
Pretty bold statement. UF won in ‘96 without Tebow, had a shot in ‘95. Won in ‘06 with Tebow as nothing more than a role player. According to most Dawgs, Tebow was way overrated and an average QB at best. Was he as great as Hershel and that’s the only reason UF won or were those titles won by great teams with an average QB?
I say those titles were won by great teams with a great QB (in ‘08) and great coaching. The only times I’ve ever felt like one player was the absolute difference in a team winning it all was when UGA had Hershel and last year with Cam. Tebow was great, but so were his teammates. Think about it: Harvin, Spikes, Hernandez, Moss, Cooper, Dunlap, Pouncey(s), Haden, etc. Great TEAM.

sorry but yes it should. even with injuries or dismissals. he has been in place the longest, with the the amount of talent he has amassed, to not win it all at least once. save the stats. the florida series has just gotten so out of hand to the point hardly anyone, outside of a UGA Alumni, remembers we still own the series. At this point, the UGA program is VIEWED no better than Arkansas. On top of that, Arkansas arguably has the better Head Coach. Is Les Miles better on gameday than Richt? this should not have been a question 3 yrs ago. Don’t bother with the stats and the coaching record. Has any Mark Richt team ever felt like national championship contenders? the ones that did got popped by florida or finished 11-2 in 2007. We have the 7th or 8th best OC in the conference and he continues to let him call senseless plays. again, save the stats. Look at mike martz. no one questions his offensive now how. His play calling and use of personnel is his downfall. At least he won a super bowl. Richt should have been more proactive and hired Weiss as soon as he got fired from notre dame or soon after last season. he did, after all, admit that he started supervising more than coaching. and the blowouts? its embarrassing how soft this team is. no tough team gets blown out on a regular basis. CMR is like that gorgeous female you date, who is so smart and savvy, but she costs too much and is lazy. you want her there so bad but you just can’t get over the top. i believe he should be fired sooner rather than later. what if he wins the east or the sec and nothing else? I posted this the other day, and we all have our opinions, but two things really stick out in my mind for the 3 year slide. Richt’s poor hiring choices in Assit coach’s and his refusing to change and adapt. The last two changes ( Grantham&S&C) were McGarity driven, IMO.

What most fans really want, including pro-Richt fans like myself, is for UGA to beat five teams in the same year: SC, UT, UF, AU, and GT. That would pretty much mean winning the East.

That being said, in my opinion and apparently McGarrity’s, there is not necessarily a magical benchmark to meet. I think it is much more dependent upon the team is prepared and performing well in losses and wins. That is not to say that any needs to make excuses. Take the AU game last year, considering AU was the undeniable best team in the country, I thought UGA played admirably. I would never say that about the UCF game.

SOS won in 1996 by default. He lost the last game of the year and got a rematch. That is 1 title to offset 1980 for us

2006-Leak w/o Tebow and you lose 2 more games
2008-Tebow won it

Your defense was good but Tebow was the difference maker

JB, with all due respect, Grantham came in (1/2009) before McGarrity (10/2010). It is therefore impossible for McGairrity to be responsible for that hire. Also, Tereshinski, the new head of the S&C has been around forever. I think you oversimplify things a good bit.

@ David Grangers post

Your #2- Actually look like they are prepared for the game.

That is so embarassing to read, but very true. After 10 years we have to wonder what UGA team is going to show up for the toughest games of the year. This is a huge problem. Do you think Bama, Florida, LSU or Auburn fans from last season had to wonder whether or not the team was going to show up and knock someones teeth in?

The issue at hand is the perceived softness of this team, a finesse team. UGA seems to lack a identity offensively and defensively. When was the last time we saw a UGA team lineup against a SEC top tier team and just dominate both sides of the ball in the trenches?

Your #2 post can really show in many different aspects the problems CMR has to address. Words can only do so much his actions on the field really need to show that he has found that edge he lost. The program has lost its edge as a result and no longer is held with the same esteem it was held at in his first 6-7 years in Athens.

I have to disagree. Who knows what Meyer would have done differently in ‘06 w/out Tebow? In ‘08, he was a beast, but it was the “D” that beat SC and OSU……not Tebow. The “D” was the difference IMO.

2007 was an outlier due to offensive prowess. They still lost several games that year in embarassing fashion. The team hasn’t been solid on offense and defense since 2005. The defense has primarily been a big problem since 2005 and the other huge issue is an average offensive line. Same time period.

This years version of the Dawgs fb team has already started w/too many lows, woes and ???’s and they haven’t played their 1st game yet. BSU and SC are good teams and return most of their best players from last season. Kellen Moore is better passer than our secondary is at stopping him. Same w/SC Q!B and that big receiver they have. Its very possible GA comes out of its 1st 2 games 0-2. Unless the DC unleashes the Dawgs front of jenkins and Gathers to disrupt both opposing QB’s is going to play large for UGA to win either one or both of these 2 games.

PS Gruff: I like how it suddenly just that he padded his TD stats now that I have blown 90% of that argument out of the water. So here goes the rest: TDs per game is a bogus stat that cannot be placed all on one player. Maybe he didn’t get pass plays called in red zone situations. Maybe they relied on a FG or a running play. Maybe they didn’t trust him early in the season with passes into the end zone.

Also think about your latest statistical farce: Of course, offensive scoring went down with the departure of Stafford, Moreno, and Masoqoui. Duh. They also played better defenses. They also had fist year starting QBs in ‘09 and ‘10.

I am not saying you are 100% wrong. I am saying that you are fallaciously drawing some very specific conclusions from some very general stats to support your prejudiced view.

The offensive scoring stats against ranked teams are interesting, and accurate. I got em from cfb stats, just change the year at the top to see what Bobo averaged against ranked teams:
http://www.cfbstats.com/2010/leader/911/team/offense/split13/category09/sort01.html

07′- 35 points, 08′- 26 points, 09′- 20 points, 10′- 15 points

It’s an average of -7 per year over last 3 years in offensive scoring against ranked teams. It’s possible to drop to 8 points a game in 2011, and then on down to 1 point a game in 2012, that’s a field goal, every 3 games.

Bobo averages -7 points less per year against ranked teams last 3 years. So, although it seems hard to imagine, with Mike Bobo, it’s easy to achieve.

Gruff

July 20th, 2011
1:38 pm

The team has lost more games, 3 seasons in a row than the season before, from 11 wins down to 6, it’s an average drop of -1.6 wins per year since 2008. The team’s scoring against ranked teams under Bobo has decreased from 35 a game in 07 to 15 a game in 10′, an average drop of -6.7 points per game per year.

Whether your averaging -1.6 wins per year than the year before, or -6.7 points per game against ranked teams, it doesn’t bode well for the Richt’s future, that’s for sure. The team is heading in a terrible, terrible direction, and nothing Richt or Bobo has tried to fix it has worked.

You think of the 4 to’s vs. Fla, 3 vs. UCF, red zone fumbles vs. South Caro/Miss St/Colorado. These turnover problems should have been corrected last off season but were not.

The defense isn’t helping with turnover margin much, 1 recovered fumble against good teams was 12th in the SEC. This should have been fixed too last off season.

July 20th, 2011

Coach K would have been canned early on at Duke by some of you posters “who will not accept mediocrity” since he did not have a winning in conference record until his 5th year at Duke.

Tom Landry would have been fired by you guys since he went several years before going above .500 at Dallas.

John Wooden didn’t come close to sniffing a NC until he had been at UCLA about 16 years.

Mark Richt is averaging an SEC title every five years. If he has another 6-7 record or does not win the SEC in the next 3-4 years, chances are good he will be out of Athens. At least let’s play out the 2011 season before giving up on him. (and I realize many of the anti-Richt posts are from rival schools who would like to see him gone.)

Vance Duly

July 20th, 2011
1:53 pm

For me, HOW we play this year is more of a key to Richt’s job security than the final won-loss record. Coach Richt will not be able to control the frequency or severity of injuries. If we lose 2 starting offensive linemen for any stretch of time, our offense may be sunk because we have VERY little depth. I believe Jenkins, Geathers, Jones and Ogletree will make a huge difference in our defense, so we should be better there. I don’t believe our defense will collapse from exhaustion again this year, thankfully.

My greatest lack of confidence is in Coach Bobo’s offensive game plan and play-calling. Even though our scoring AVERAGE was good last year, it was inconsistent. When we needed to compensate for weak defense, we failed too often. Coach Bobo is too predictable and some of his inexplicable play calls cause us to waste offensive possessions. Coach Bobo wants to run between the tackles after the vast majority of incomplete 1st down passes, leaving us with 3rd and long. Coach Bobo prefers using play-action fakes even on 3rd and 10, when everyone knows we should be throwing the ball (which limits the QB’s time to observe the field). Coach Bobo enjoys running the miniscule Carlton Thomas between the tackles at the most unusual times. When something is working consistently, Coach Bobo tends to stop it for the sake of “balance” (see Kentucky 2009 and GA Tech 2010 as specific examples). Perhaps, Bobo’s most “inspired” call of the past 2 years was Auburn 2009, when the bomb to Israel Troupe ignited a comeback victory. BUT, as he admitted the next day, Bobo didn’t even realize that Troupe was in the game, as AJ got hurt on the prior play. Even with AJ being double-teamed last year, Orson Charles averaged only 2 touches per game. Amazing!

Will Coach Bobo grow into his OC position? He seems much better suited to be QB Coach and a primary recruiter. It’s not about padding our scoring numbers against Coastal Carolina – it’s about scoring whatever number is necessary to beat Boise St, Auburn, the Evil Gators, etc. If Bobo doesn’t do a better job as OC, this could be a long season and could hurt Coach Richt’s future. Hopefully, Coach Richt will intervene in the play-calling if needed…….. GO DAWGS!!!

Murray only threw 5 td’s against ranked teams, 19 came against unranked teams like Vanderbilt & Louisiana Lafayette.

Yes Gruff (your name this week). In his first year with assistants in their first year while installing an entirely new defensive scheme, he vastly improved the turnover margin and pressure on QBs. If you say otherwise, you are just a plain liar.

You have made your mind up. You are going to cook your stupid stats to back up whatever BS opinion you have and fart it repeatedly on this thread ad nauseum. I don’t know why I let my self get suckered in once again. Find someone else to stroke your ego.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Richt’s job should not depend on THIS season, no matter what. One thing you know about Richt is that he is a stand up guy. Georgia will never see the kind of trouble USC, UNC, OSU, Oregon, or even GT find themselves in right now with Richt at the helm.

That said, my one real criticism of Richt is that too often he has brought in young and inexperienced coaches to take the reigns in some areas of the program. Bill, you hit it when you mentioned Bobo running Thomas up the middle on third and long. “SITUATIONAL FOOTBALL” and understanding who’s got your back will be key this year.

COFFIN CORNER should be used by Butler early and often. Don’t allow teams to switch field position on you through the kicking game. Our defense should be greatly improved, so we should be able to play more of an Old School Alabama type of football.

Let’s be honest. Richt has had some character issues with some of his players. I thought not suspending Ealey last year for three games, at least, after he disobeyed a direct order was a mistake and it proved to be so. Richt cannot control injuries, or the Park and Rec scandal in Columbus that could affect Jones, or force a 20-something year old to take the lessons given and apply them.

Many of the SEC coaches we want to compare Richt to…Les Miles, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban…each winning a NC in their second season. I submit Richt was cheated out of that opportunity because of the ongoing scandal in Columbus, OH. The year Georgia goes 13 – 1, they miss the N.C. because Miami and OSU were both undefeated. That would not have been so if OSU played by the rules.

RICHT SHOULD KEEP HIS JOB NO MATTER WHAT THIS SEASON BRINGS, KNOWING FULL WELL THAT 2012 would be his make or break year.

1 thing’s for sure at Georgia under Richt, 88% of the time, since 2002, Richt willl lose more games than the year before.

2002- 13-1
2003- 11-3
2004- 10-2
2005- 10-3
2006- 9-4
2007- 11-2
2008- 10-3
2009- 8-5
2010- 6-7

12% chance Richt goes 7-6 or better, 88% chance Richt goes 5-7.

Auburn? Had a big lead, started good in 1st quarter, then fell apart.
Florida? Got the jitters and had a fumble and threw 3 int’s.
UCF? Another 3 turnovers from Murray.
Arkansas? 6 sacks, couldn’t make a decision.
Miss St? Couldn’t score a td until the 4th quarter.
South Carolina? Couldn’t score a td.

Better luck this year. Maybe he gets his 1st win against a winning team. Who will it be?

CMR has a track record of not being able to take raw talent and make it better, much less perform at a level that wins championshps. I give you all the top 5 nationally ranked recruiting classes that he has had to work with over the last 5 years in support of this fact. Further, he is just not very bright. He lived off the big play, throwing the bomb and letting a greyhound receivers running underneath them, at FSU. The SEC ain’t the ACC. FSU ain’t UGA. So, how can one expect him to do it now? Has he finished studying his football text books? Is that why?

We should not even be having this discussion. He should have been gone years ago.

Define hotseat. If that means a coach could get fired, then I reckon that applies to everyone – look at Jim Tressel. There is always a level of putrefaction that will show a coach to the unemployment line. It’s when that level reaches a reasonably attainable status that the coach is on the hotseat, imho. I figure a measure of this season against last is a good baseline – i.e. if the team has the same results as last year will the coach be canned? If so, then that is saying an improvement is expected or else.

If that suffices as a definition of “hotseat” then YES, MARK RICHT IS ON THE HOTSEAT.

Richt should already be gone. If he continues, I’m sure I’m not the only one that will go to TV and cancel season tickets. It’s not much fun to see us beat a New Mexico State by a couple TD’s than get shocked by an undermaned Vanderbilt. Richt is not a winner, he doesn’t coach. Watch him during games, he walks the sidelines behind his shades and talks to no one. He’s not involved. If he was so honorable he would admit his lack of interest and go preach. But he’s not going to give up the money until we show him the door. I want some one who plays to win and for multi millions is willing to do it full time. He’s can’t coach, can’t produce balance recruiting, and can’t develop talent. He has ruined many a player that should have been great. As much as I love Georgia if I had a son currwntly being recruited, I would advise him to go somewhere else. This years recruiting is off to a very bad start, compare it to other schools at this point and we are not even in the game. Richt needs to go. Richt should have been fired after last season. Actually, he should have been fired after the 2009 season. Nevertheless, he’s still around. I have it from an impeccable source that Adams and the AD have set the bar at ten wins or else this year. Personally, it is possible to win the SEC East with Richt; however, the danger lies in that we can’t give him a new contract but rather just a one year extension. Most likely, he will lose five, six, or even seven games this year. The Bulldog nation doesn’t need to fret about what the players think when he is fired, because if a truly quality replacement is hired, this will generate extreme excitement almost immediately. UGA is a football college, in the top ten in all-time wins, makes more money than any other program except Texas, and has the most tolerant fan base in the NCAA, Life after Richt is going to be GREAT when we return to GLORY!

I just don’t feel UGA can pull out 7 wins. If you know the history of the UGA-Tenn series, you know how important playing on your own field is. Whoever played on their own field won the last 4 times. So you figure that’s a loss. Then you got the big boys Richt just can’t beat these days like Florida, Bopise, Carolina, Auburn and Mullen. That’s 6 losses. Tech–Kentucky could be surprise UGA losses, as they had the same 6-7 record as UGA last year and are not to be underestimated. Could be 8 losses there, easily. 8 very tough games of equal or better teams. Only 4 games are pretty much locks being NM St, C Caro, Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss. Ole Miss could also be dangerous because Houston Nutt has to win this year or he’s done and they usually do score some points. Could be a 9th loss to Ole Miss.

Sitting in the stands and watching your team run out made the hairs on my neck stand-up. Playing any sport at UGA is truly a privilege and not a given. Too many of these young men feel that UGA owes them something and they can act-up however they feel. I lived in Alabama before and during the transition from Mike Shula to Nick Saban. During that time the blogs were much different than those here. Yes, there are detractors of CMR, but also many supporters and hopeful and wishful thinkers. In Bama, the fans had had it. They wanted Shula GONE and gone yesterday. No wishing, hoping, philosophising, and gosh he’s a really nice guy, etc. By God, Bama is a winner, it has a winning heritage, had one of the greatest coaches in college football history once in charge, and they were mad as hell and not going to take it any more. $4 million. $5 million. $6 million . . . . whatever it takes. And they got a real coach . . . one passionately and emotionally and heavily involved up to his eyebrows in every game. The kinds of problems with players and recruits that have become a regular occurrence at Georgia would never happen under a Saban, Miles, Chizik, Spurrier, or Meyer, or others? All the talk about the new recruits? Who knows how many will not be arrested, or put on probation, suspended, thrown off the team, etc. before they ever play a game? Anyone see a pattern here yet? Can he get really the Dawgs ready for super-quarterbacked Boise State, who will be chomping at the bit before a national audience and a chance to embarrass a top tier team? And then a trip to SC. Some say yes, and I guess they are seeing somehow that things have changed. Maybe they are right. CMR is a good man and no one wishes him ill, but maybe he is not in the right job. But, unless huge changes have taken place, Georgia’s “Mike Shula Moment” is sure to come this year. The Puppie Nation will not tolerate another year of mediocrity.

I don’t see that, I can understand it being a possibility considering Richt’s recent associations with World Vision, and yes, I know his lakehouse home recently went up for sale too, and despite how bad all that looks for trying to figure out where Richt’s at these days, I kind of doubt it. Burned out on football and having a mid life crisis, ok, good chance, but trying to lose on purpose to force a $6 million payday? Doubtful.

Richt will be gone no later than second week of January. 50/50 he is gone before end of September.

We need to find a world class coach like the fellow at TCU, a proven head coach who will do what is needed to turn our program around.

Almost every statistic shows that Richts just sinks lower and lower every year. He’s so in over his head he is role playing now as long as possible for the $$$.

All you “fans” who want him to continue to destroy UGA football probably voted for Obama and how he is destroying the USA in a similar manner.

Comparing Richt to Shula is not a good comparison

Comparing Richt to Fulmer is an excellent comparison

Fulmer was facing the wrath of Vol Nation heading into 2004 and won the East and almost beat auburn in the SECCG

2005, he went 5-7
2006-2008 were ok but ultimately he got fired.

Enter Layla’s husband(how did he hypnotize her and pull that off?)

Left their program in shambles.

Now DD from LaTech with a losing record was all they could churn up to take the gig.

They are years away from being where fulmer had them as recently as 2004

Absolutely NOT. Vince Dooley himself had some pretty sub-par years and would, by the society of today’s microwave mentality, never have been with UGA long enough to win a National Championship. Change just for changes sake rarely works out well. You only have to look at the current administration for proof of that.
Richt obviously brings more to the table than your average coach or he never would have been able to net a class of recruits like he just did after such an awful season. He is a good man and a good coach, with the wherewithal to get this ship turned around. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Phil 4:13

just a little behing the curve there. when they say “Richt has his Erk” they’re talking about Grantham’s defense having time to gel. He’s only been couple of years, and has done a nice job of straightening the mess left by Martinez. This will be the first year we get to see 3-4 with the vast majority of the proper pieces in place. For one, we have some monsters in the middle with Jenkins and Geathers that are absolutely crucial to the success of a 3-4 defense. It should be fun to watch this year.

Are you kidding?? He is coming off a 6-7 season and lost most of his experienced running backs and offensive line. He has a good second year QB but if he runs alot, he is one tackle from injury. Richt should have a winning record with his schedule and the strength of the other teams in the SEC east, but to say he should be fired if he doesn’t win the SEC is like saying Bill King should be fired if he doesn’t start writing better columns. A number of Georgia fans (the rabid ones) believe both premises, but who would you replace Richt with? King on the other hand is more expendable.

To me its not about winning the East per se as it is about the “hunger”. Does Mark Richt have it anymore? From 2001-2007, Richt had it. B from 2008-2010, the guy has been on complete autopilot, and anyone who says otherwise is delusional. If you’re hungry, you don’t keep under-performing coordinators 2-4 years too late. When your team is hungry, they don’t get blown out in rivalry games. You can’t help injuries and players leaving early for the NFL,but that 6-7 record in 2010 was the end result of bad decision after bad decision made throughout the course of the last 5-6 years. Bad decisions in coaching, talent evaluation, player accountability, over-scheduling etc. When your head coach is hungry, these things don’t happen( at least not to the degree that they have happened in Athens). And when you have competent leadership from your AD, it doesn’t happen. It all stems from the top. If Richt can rekindle the fire he had back in 2002, he can turn this thing around. But is it too little too late for Mr. McGarity ? We shall see.

Well there is no “What if’ scenarios for me. I truly believe this team this year can go 11-1 and play in a BCS bowl game. The offensive line is a little thin but the starters are going to be solid and I believe one or two freshmen such as that Ward kid could come in and be ready if an injury occurs. Ken Malcome I think will be similar to what Musa Smith was for us and will be a hard running solid SEC RB. He will buy Isiah Crowell some time to become comfortable by the middle of the season. We have more weapons at WR than people realize. The defense is what we are going to be so impressed with as Georgia fans. John Jenkins is going to be a dominate. Just him on that line is going to do wonders for the defense. Now Deangelo Tyson who has been playing out of position is going to get to show the bulldawg nation that he once was a 5 star DE. I know Georgia has had great linebackers , but I dont know if I have ever been this excited about our Linebacker group. Our secondary will have an easier job stoping receivers that dont get as much time to get open. Remember Nick Saban tried to get Todd Grantham for his Defensive Coordinator. I have all the confidence in the world in Grantham. The Georgia Defense has not been the same in a long time and I am excited to see it back in Athens because I don’t care if we score 17 points a game as long as our Defense is holding teams below that. So go ahead and copy and paste, hell hang this up on the refridgerator. I have no doubt Georgia will win 10 or more games this season. DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE…That’s what winning Georgia football is all about!

Mark Richt’s job should ride on one thing…winning football games; winning the SEC and competing for the MNC, as that’s what he’s being paid $3M a year to do. All the other stuff (nice guy, man of faith, etc.) is secondary; however, these are the traits that get you hired. His record is 14-12 the past two seasons and he’s lost more games than Donnan his past five seasons. I’m thinking maybe we’re due some better results?

I can’t understand how he has kept his job the past several years. I know 680’s talking head and a former Dawg (Pollack) have a lot of clout and are Richt supporters but enough is enough. I would love to see a “Win the East” or be gone ultimatum but believe 9 wins likely brings Richt back again. It seems we have become proud of mediocrity rather than striving for excellence. With his recruiting base there is simply no excuse not to be a yearly contender to win the East and yet he has managed to allow South Carolina to surpass us largely because they have the better coach even if their recruiting base is at best half of what ours is. I guess being a bible thumper weighs more than winning football games.

Bamaguy:

That is a decent point. The competition has gotten better. But the perception that the SEC was “down” between 2002-2005 isn’t entirely accurate. Bama and Florida might have been down: but you can make the argument that Tennessee, Auburn, LSU were just as good if not better back then than they are now. In fact if anything, you can make the argument that the SEC( especially the East) has been down the last few years except Florida, Bama, and maybe LSU( Auburn is a one hit wonder to me as of now). The truth is that Richt’s teams from 2002-2005 could have lined up against any team or any coach, and would have won their fair share.

#110 ranked Colorado

#97 ranked South Carolina
#90 ranked Miss St.
#88 ranked Arkansas

Joe Cox had the same offensive line, same receivers, and smae running backs, and won all 5 games.

Murray lost all 5.

Both faced the #97 ranked pass defense.

Cox put up 5 td’s against Ark, #97 ranked pass defense.
Murray put up 0 td’s against South Carolina, the #97 ranked pass defense.

Why Richt can’t see the only change in the 5 games on offense was at QB, returning the other 11 starters, is mystifying.

Be careful what you ask for – maybe we should not have fired Fulmer and hired Kiffen!!!!!

Teams go in cycles – recruits do not always pan out – and there is turnover in the staff. If Fulmer was still HC at Tennessee – maybe, just maybe – Tennessee would have been good enough to win the SEC last year against an above average SC – an average Florida team – and a poor UGA team.

Instead – we had to flush the waste – and start all over – and now we have the NCAA to deal with to boot.

IF the VOLS can not win the SEC EAST – PLEASE UGA – do not let Spurrier or the GATORS win.

I have alway respected UGA – and loved it when Fulmer owned you. However, I have never hated UGA except of Donnan and his thugs dancing on our T at midfield before a game. Pretty stupid as we easily handled UGA that day.

Richt is a good man and a good coach – his record speaks for itself – UGA is caught in a down cycle with some bad recruits staff changes that needed to be made as the program was becoming stale.
UGA – please beat SC and the GATORS!

I don’t think CMR’s job hinges on winning the SEC east. The AD is looking for a tangible improvement both on and off the field. So far, UGA has been stellar off the field with no instances of of civil disobedience. UGA has had a very trying last 6 weeks as it appears, those not willing to work for the most part have left the team. Never discount team unity and the heart of the players on a team. Adversity has a way of pulling some teams together, and if that holds true, UGA is going to be real good, LOL. I think 8 or 9 wins with all that has happened would be a darn good year for UGA. It is going to take the best effort by the players and coaches to do this. I think it will be done at UGA. The AD knows what UGA needs and I believe right now, CMR is providing it for him. I can’t wait until the season starts and the discussions can turn to the real thing. Football played and the games enjoyed.

NO!!!!! His job should ride on intent and perseverance. We could absolutly loose the first two games. Don’t be thinking we can’t. But what I am looking for is the intent of this team to go out each week and to actually play to the best of there abilities. EVERY WEEK!!! If that happens, the wins will come. By the end of the season, if we have lost any games early, you will have forgotten about them. Because, if the freshmen continue to get better throughout the season, we should be pretty darn good by then. I just don’t think we can beat Boise St. and South Carolina on talent alone and four short weeks of practice isn’t goining to make that big a difference vs. experience. But I truly believe that by the second half of the season this team will have jelled and become something very fascinating!!!!

I don’t think you can base whether or not richt keeps his job strictly on one criteria. If he wins the east he should be safe, unless something abnormal happens like no one in the east has a good record and when uga lost it was blowouts. However, if they win 10 games and don’t win the east I think he’s safe. My prediction is 8 wins or less and no sec title he’s gone, including the bowl game. But it really will depend on the quality of the wins and losses.

CMR identified the problems: poor coaching at DC and OL, strength and conditioning needed revamping and there needs to be more full contact at practice during the week. I refuse to roll over and let people come in here having no clue about who we have on our football team and tell me were going 5-7 or 6-6. I remember last year people saying Auburn would go 6-6 or 7-5 and I was one of those people and learned my lesson very quick. Regardless if Auburn cheated or whatever you want to call it, they took a bad season the year before and won the BCS title the next season. Not saying Georgia will, but I def see us with atleast 10 wins.

In my mind, CMR has to beat Florida AND win the east to keep his job. CFN stated the case perfectly. No excuse with the schedule and CMR being 2 years into his rebuilding program. If he can’t get it done, that means he either let the program really slide or he can’t coach. Either he would have to go. BTW I think UGA wins 10 and the east and Richt keeps his job for many years.

Plant:

That is a completely flawed assessment. Joe Cox was a 5th year Senior when he took over the job, Murray started as a freshman.

Joe Cox had AJ Greene for the Arkansas & South Carolina game, Murray didn’t. Murray started his first SEC game vs. South Carolina without Green, so you have to throw that game out IMO. The team came out flat vs. MSU, and the defense completely let the team down vs. Colorado and Auburn.

I think Murray is a good player. You can filter the entire offense through him. The same could not be said for Cox. I think if Murray had AJ the entire season, the team wouldn’t have gone 6-6, and probably would have beaten Arkansas and Colorado because the offense would have had continuity. The 2010 team was probably an 8-4 team that went 6-6, while 2009 was a team that probably deserved to go 6-6, but landed at 7-5.

I was talking with my father last night and he made a pretty good analogy of what it takes to be a champion. He retired from the Insurance business and has won every award his company had to offer. He got as high as District manager only because we (the kids) told him we did not want to leave the great state of Georgia so he settled for the kids sake. But to get to the top you have to start planning it even before the end of the current year your in, and that senario NEVER STOPS. If you relax on your laurels and say wait till march to get started, your done, its over. As the top man you have to be the motivator, the inspiration. Thats what puzzles me the most about Mark Richt! How can you be such a man of GOD and not be a great motivator, the two go hand ‘n’ hand. If the Lord is truly your inspiration there is really know way you can be defeated. I think Mark Richt is actually separating himself between the two (meaning HC of UGA and Spiritual Leader of Followers) instead of bringing the two together and showing how God used teamwork by the Hebrews to win their victories and such. There is no other place in the world to pick inspirational stories from. And also you must remember this! One cannot win a battle unless there is a “clear enemy to fight” and a proper strategy to do so.

Actually, the AJ Green thing is not accurate. UGA went 0-3 without AJ against ranked teams, and went 0-2 with AJ. AJ couldn’t win against Auburn or Colorado, and couldn’t score on UCF.

Murray to Cox is as fair of an assessment as you can get. Both were short, 1st year starters with an impressive high school resume. Both had the same offensive line, receivers, and running backs. Both played the same 5 teams. Cox went 5-0 against them, Murray went 0-5 against them. Both went against the 97th ranked pass defense, Cox set a personal best throwing for 5 td’s, Murray couldn’t score a single td. I am certain Aaron Murray was why Georgia went 6-7 and only scored 16 a game on ranked teams. Murray only had 1 good quarter in 4 games against ranked teams of Auburn, South Carolina, Miss St, and UCF. He just chokes under pressure. He’s terrible on 3rd down, 4th quater, red zone, 0 & 6 against winning teams, and 0 & 6 when the other team scores first.

1- 1 good quarter out of the 4 games
2- 7 interceptions
3- Not scoring more than 1 td in 3 out of 4 games
4- Not scoring 1 td in 2 of the games
5- Inaccurate on 3rd down
6- Inaccurate in the 4th quarter
7- Inaccurate & ineffective in the red zone

Plant:

Again that is an unfair comparison. Arkansas, South Carolina, and Auburn were all better teams in 2010 than they were in 2009. Joe Cox would have lost to all of those teams had he played them. Joe Cox needed either A.) AJ Green to bail him out or B.) the running game to go well for him to succeed. Murray on the other hand can throw the ball 40 times a game and the team can score 30-40 points on a consistent basis. The same could not be said for Joe Cox.

I think you read too much into the final score. You shouldn’t underestimate team psychology. By the time UGA played Colorado, their season was basically shot. The got beat by a good South Carolina team, lost a heartbreaker to a good Arkansas team, and came out flat vs. a much improved MSU team. Mentally the team had lost confidence and was trying to salvage the season. Had they had AJ during that 3 game stretch, they would have at least been 2-2 and probably would have beaten Colorado.

Your comparisons between Cox and Murray are apples to oranges. For a 5th year senior, Cox should have been able to at least manage the offense, and he couldn’t do it on a consistent basis. Murray to me has more upside. He’s more athletic and has a better arm. He’ll eventually beat a team with a winning record. Is he a difference maker like Cam Newton or a Tim Tebow? Probably not. But can we win games with him? Absolutely. But the pieces around him have to be better for him to have consistent success. That falls on Richt and the coaching staff, not Murray.

I have actually seen Mason play and although he is not a bad QB he does not have the ”it” factor Murray or Lemay has. Murray is going to be fine this year because he is going to have a stellar defense behind him. You all keep flashing Murray’s records against winning teams like you all know what your talking about but there were others to blame besides him in those games. He was a redshirt freshmen, in other words still just a kid who will be lightyears ahead this season from last. Murrays not only a great QB, but he is a natural born leader who has the intangibles. No. Only Paterno has as many 10 win seasons in the first 10 years as being a head coach. The others had 3 or less including Bryant, Bowden, Dooley, Saban. Richt’s record in the first 10 years much better than Saban, Bryant, Dooley overall also. Dooley did not do that much in 16 years before Herschel arrived. I mean I can put in more and more figures that show Richt as being in the top football in FBS history in the first 10 years of a coaches career.

Pick a coach, go compare his record to Richt’s and you will see Richt is better than 90% of them and as good as the BEST in history. None won a National Championship in their first 10 years as a head coach, not even Saban. Paterno may have I will have to check.

Bottomline the guy who wrote this article needs to be writing an article stating why it would seem to be th DUMBEST MOVE in NCAA history to fire Richt unless we win win the East or 9 games or 8 games or 7 games. Simply pathetic. I am not worried because we are going to be good unless our Qb goes down.

Last year was a fluke and UGA could have easily been 10-2 but hey everybody has those years. You guys are putting TOO much pressure on Richt, while some pressure is warranted, this MUCH is a bad thing and that includes the writer of this article who is supposedly a fan. He is adding to the pressure on the school, administration, coaches, players and head coach which is undeserved to this extent and when under pressure, bad things happen that would not ordinarily happen by the players or decisions by coaches.

I DARE YOU WRITERS AND READERS TO CHECK RICHT’S RECORD AGAINST ALL OTHER COACHES IN HISTORY, THE BEST COACHES IN HISTORY, THE IMMORTAL COACHES, AND SEE HOW RICHT STACKS UP!

THEN apologize, do an about face and PRAY that Richt NEVER leaves and SUPPORT him in the tough times like he DESERVES. YOU MORONS. You too writers! You MEN, are ignorant and WRONG!

Thank God the AD says Rchts record his first 10 years SPEAKS FOR ITSELF and he just wants to see progress. That is SENSIBLE AND CORRECT.

Last year was a FLUKE and expected to be down just not as bad but we shot ourselves. Sometimes TEAMS just dont know how to win and find a way to lose. It happens at ALL SCHOOLS AND COACHES INCLUDING SABAN, BRYANT, ETC.

The year before was EXPECTED to suck with Stafford and Moreno gone and Cox at Qb.

Fire Bobo maybe. Richt? NEVER. You got that you so called UGA fans? Compare Richt’s record to ANYBODY. If you dont say wow maybe I made a rush to judgement and could not see the forest for the trees. Yeah Richt is actually not bad at all. He is really as good as Paterno was in his first 10 years and that was damn good. He has been better than Bryant and Saban and Bowden. Wow. They you should say why have I been wanting him to not be the coach at UGA? Look at all these other coaches and man some of them had a couple down years too. Some won only 6 games multiple years in their first 15. Man Richt has done an AWESOME job when you compare him to all these great coaches! Why are there so MANY people who do NOT realize how good their coach actually is and insist on him being gone? You are a disgrace to UGA and to men everywhere.

Richt has put himself in position to win a National Championship at about the same time Saban did and he won his among the earliest, maybe the earliest, of any coach in history, 11 years.

Hey Bill King….Did you not hear the AD when he said he wants to see progress and that Richt has proven himself his first 10 years? Progress would be a win or 2 more and/or a program heading in the right direction. It may not come down to wins at all if say the Qb goes down, we lose more OL or we cant run the ball due to no blocking. It is not the coaches fault many times and they can only control what they can. I expect UGA to win 9 games at a minimum this year if we can run the ball and we have no significant injuries, too many turnovers and penalties. It could be an undefeated season coming up and all you idiots are taking about how many games Richt needs to win to save his job…..I hope UGA wins them all so all of you who can see what idiots you are. I bet many dont apologize. You writers are hurting UGA keeping this thing rolling and in the forefront. You could EASILY write the same article with a different perspective. One that does not FEED a fire nor put more heat on. PLEASE do an article comparing Richt’s first 10 years to the best SEC coaches, the immortal coaches, the greats from every school in history. Pick some big names and put Richts record besides theirs in black and white for the readers and fans to see and compare. Put it next to Dooley’s, Bryant’s, Paterno’s, Bowden(maybe not counting his start at Howard)pick others that did not play in weak conferences etc. Put it out there for the world to see and title the article” does Richt and the UGA players really deserve all the heat WE are putting on him? It is just how fast they mature and how well they use their skills for UGA.
The defense should be a beast and will be heavily counted on to control the game, for the first couple of games until the offense gets it’s feet under itself. The defense has some new DB’s and a couple that will have to step up their game, but I like the attitude of the defense and believe that the D coach will have them ready to go when the season starts. They have the front seven in place to control that line of scrimmage.
All any of us can do, is go by what our AD has said will be the guage for whether or not we have CMR as our coach next year. Information is that area has not been specific, but it does appear that he wants to see a better team both on and off the field. Off the field problems seem to have gotten under control, and UGA will be a force to be confronted with after a few games, I believe.
We do have a brutal two game opening but after that, the DAWGS, have a much easier schedule so, 8 or 9 wins is quite possible. A lot will depend on how well the players put in the effort and how well the coaches coach up the team. I sense, at least from what I can read, that CMR has a renewed sense of purpose and is going to do the job, to the best of his ability this year. If he does that, he is as good as any coach out there. I think the team is much more unified and although not experienced in a lot of areas, will play with heart, showcase their talents and surprise a few people. If Bobo gets some imagination then the offense, will work as well. If not, CMR I believe will step in where needed.
Any team that takes UGA too lightly might find themselves in some trouble. It will not be good for a team to fall behind UGA, one way or another, because the defense will make it tough for them to catch up.

No.

Because of the injururies, and transfers, Richt gets a pass for this year. This is a rebuilding year, McGarity won’t expect much.

Richt needs to allow competition at QB. Murray hasn’t earned the starting position yet, Murray hasn’t beaten a winning team yet (0-6 record).

Richt’s afraid of letting Hutson Mason or Christian Lemay start a game because I think Richt fears they’ll outplay Murray and that might start a QB controversy and split the lockeroom.

I know Richt really likes Murray as a person, and as a fellow religious person. But he has to put aside that and look, not at YARDS, TD’S, But only look at WINS.

CAN MURRAY WIN? HAS HE EVER LED HIS TEAM TO A VICTORY AGAINST A WINNING TEAM?

The answer is no.

I always thought WINNING was the bottom line, instead of YARDS.

Murray’s a Marino, he’s all about setting records for yards and stuff. But low on the TEAM thing, TEAM goals like WINS. What’s needed is a McElroy, what we have is a Marino. Some guys WILL their team to VICTORIES in BIG GAMES. Murray NEVER has. Murray lacks the TEAM orientation, and lacks LEADERSHIP. It’s PAST TIME for an OPEN COMPETITION N THE FIELD AT QB between Murray, Lemay, and Mason. If Murray’s good, he should win it, if not, time to make a change.

McGarity should tell Richt, not to worry about his job this season. Just have competition on the field during games to find his QB, RB, WR, and so on. Sort of how Tenn did with Sims & Bray. Once Bray came in, won 4 out the next 5 games.

I guarantee you Murray would lose any open competition in real games. Lemay would probably win the most games, and Mason would set more records than Murray. Murray would finish 3rd in that competition.

Richt’s so afraid of this being true, he won’t let Lemay or Mason start a game. Even though Murray has never won a game against a team with a winning record.

McGarity needs to quickly recognize this seaosn for what it is, a rebuilding year, and start letting his coaches try new things, and let players compete in real games to win their spot. It’s going to be 6-6 season at best (Auburn–Florida–South Carolina–Boise State–Mississippi State—Tenn), may as well have something to show for the 6-6 season.

Let Bobo try out some new schemes. Let Grantham have a competition at DLine & LB and see which combinations work (4-3 line might work better than 3-4 dline with Geathers and Jenkins).

Let’s give Mason & Lemay some starts this year against winning teams, what do you have to lose, you know Murray’s record against those kind of teams is 0-6, Mason or Lemay can’t be any worse. It’s a rebuilding year anyway.

The Bray & Sims competition should have 50/50 against winning teams to be fair. So should Georgia’s.

It can’t possibly be that Murray gives him the best chance to win those kind of games, after all, Murray’s 0-6 against winning teams. It’s because Richt fears Murray will get beat in an OBJECTIVE TEST.

Quick note to Columbus, who was trying to defend CMR (which I agree with); but stated Dooley accomplished very little before Herschel. Doole won three SEC titles and only had one losing season before Hershel. This during a time when Bear Bryant was not only dominating the SEC but all of college football. To the couple of posters hating on Murray- You guys must have some other hidden agenda; because everyone else in the country believes Murray is not only the best QB in the SEC, but one of the top 10 or 15 in the country and this is only his second season playing. How in the world you’ve concluded Christian LeMay (who I will have not complaints if he wins the Heisman someday; but has yet to play a single college football game) would come in and instantly be a better QB- I can’t figure out. Also, CMR will put the QB that he feels gives his team the best chance to win every week- you can bet that. Why don’t you pipe down and support the the coach and ALL the QB’s (if you are a UGA fan- otherwise, just pipe down).

Considering Murray’s 0-6 record against winning teams, there is NO GOOD REASON ON EARTH to CONTINUE TO LET MURRAY LOSE GAMES. Whatever Richt’s reason is for ENTITLING Murray with a position he has yet to EARN due to his lack of ACHIEVEMENT OF TEAM GOALS, it’s a bad reason. Richt’s afraid of letting Mason or Lemay start a game against a winning team, because he fears they’ll beat out Murray.

Considering Richt started Joe T over Stafford, I’d guess Richt feels a loyalty to guys that have been on the team longer, even if they can’t beat a winning team.

Richt doesn’t want to look bad, like he chose the wrong QB, so he won’t let Mason or Lemay start against a winning team. Richt doesn’t want Murray to COMPETE for the job in an OBJECTIVE TEST. Lunchpail, you just showed your ignorance (not that anyone doubted it). Richt start Joe T. because he had outperformed Stafford in training camp. What CMR values in a QB is leadership, composure and demonstrated good decisionmaking. Stafford, in his freshman season, was a typical hot-shot, big armed HS QB. He made poor decisions because he was new to the system, was inexperienced at the college level and hadn’t gotten used to the speed of the game. You see, throwing interceptions and not knowing when to “check down” are two game killers for QB’s. Stafford did a lot of that early in his first season. He tried to squeeze to many balls in tight spots because he had a big arm resulting in bad interceptions. He improved as the season when on and became a no.1 draft pick because he learned. Murray demonstrated the characteristics that CMR looks for. You keep sqwauking about TEAM GOALS. It’s a TEAM GAME and Murray was NOT the only PLAYER ON THE FIELD. YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

Coach Richt’s decided Murray is his guy. That position is locked. Surprised? It’s strange Coach Richt has already settled in on Murray, considering Murray’s weak performances so far and lack of success and propensity to choke in big games (0-6 against winning teams, 0-5 against ranked teams, 4 turnovers against Florida, 2 interceptions and 0 touchdowns in the Bowl game, 0 touchdowns aganst South Carolina, etc.). Considering Richt has the Stat record holder in touchdowns in Hutson Mason and highly touted Christian Lemay on the bench as backups. Really very little substantially on Murray’s resume. Richt must see something else, like how Murray does against the unranked teams. I think Murray’s a Christian, so maybe that’s it.

Richt’s job is riding on how Aaron Murray does.

Christian hater? What? No way. Coach Richt sees something in Murray besides winning big games, because Murray has never won a single big game (0-6 against winning teams, 0-5 against ranked teams, Florida, South Carolina, National Champion Auburn, Bowl game, etc.). My guess is Richt’s impressed with either Murray’s performance in non-important games like Lafayette, or impressed with Murray’s similarity in values, and since Coach Richt’s an outspoken Christian, I would assume he’d be most comfortable among a QB who’s an outspoken Christian like Murray, in other words, someone a lot like Coach Richt in values. It really doesn’t make much sense otherwise, because 0-6 against winning teams, 0-5 against ranked teams, would get you on the bench on most teams, or in the middle of a major QB competition. Not so with Coach Richt. Something, besides winning big games, impresses Coach Richt about Murray. Maybe it’s Murray’s high school highlight video, Coach Richt’s also mentioned that.

Hutson Mason is not in the conversation. 40% completion vs. Lafayette? 37% against Idaho State? He needs to be up around 70% completion to show the coaches what he can do better than Murray, and complete some bombs. If he can do that, he’ll get a shot. He has to sieze every opportunity. Mason started big wiht that td pass on his 1st pass ever, then basically faded out.

Lemay? Kid showed me something on G-Day with the go ahead drive in the last 2 minutes. He is so poised, nothing rattles him. I do think he’ll be rotated in some this season. It will be fun to watch how he does. He could give heavy rotation if Murray falters, and it could be like Brady getitng his chance.

Murray? He has to do something to earn leadership, Richt bequethed Murray the title, but Murray hasn’t earned it on the field yet. Murray needs to win some games against some big teams or his career is likely gonna be a short one at Georgia and he’ll then become yet another wash out story. Hope not. But it’s time for Murray to stop FAKING LEADERSHIP and BEAT A WINNING TEAM.

If CMR pulls off a fairly good season, with all that has happened to the team this off season, he deserves to lead the next team on the field so we can see how the dream team has really shaped up. I think 8 wins is realistic and possibly 9, but I am not too sure about the SEC East championship. If he beats UF and finishes with a decent amount of wins, UGA fans can really look forward to next year. This year, can be a success also, I just don’t see the SEC championship for 2011, and I would be nicely surprised if the SEC East is won by UGA.
It is time to be realistic and forget about last year, or even good years in UGA history. None of us knows how a bunch of these young men will play this year, and we will not for about another 6 weeks. I want to see them play with heart, dedication to the team, and go all out in every game. If the coaching staff can keep them motivated and looking forward to each week, He will have done his job as well.

If you really want to throw 30 td’s, just throw 25 td’s against unranked teams and you can get there. Looks like Murray has alreadfy figured this out since only 5 of his scores last year were against top 25 teams.

I’m getting real tired of listening to and reading about everyone questioning whether or not CMR is what’s best for the football program after having one bad season. I think 1953Dawg referenfed Coach Vince Dooley’s record at some point above, and he was one of college football’s greatest coaches. In 25 years, Dooley went 201-77-10 and had a bowl record of 8-10-2. Dooley was with Georgia for 16 years with his fare share of subpar seasons before winning the national championship in 1980. Richt already has a bowl record of 7-3 and a W-L % of .738, which is higher than Vince Dooley’s was. I know everone wants to win, and I would love nothing more than to see the dogs win it all, but leave Richt the F— alone! If he starts having losing seasons every year then gripe, but as long as he consistently has winning seasons and goes to bowl games, shut up.
