From ‘Dream’ spring to nightmare summer (UPDATED)

Caleb King in better times. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Caleb King in better times. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

So now that UGA has made it official that Caleb King is academically ineligible, where does that leave the Dogs’ running game?

Awfully shaky at best. Yes, incoming “Dream Team” member Isaiah Crowell is expected to be the next great Georgia tailback, but the odds are long against him being fully ready to shoulder that mantle right from the start.

And with Boise State and South Carolina as the opening games, there won’t be any chance for tune-ups.

While Crowell’s running chops might be in fine form early on, chances are he’s going to have a hard time picking up the considerable pass protection duties that tailbacks have in Mike Bobo’s offense. And considering the questions surrounding the offensive line, that’s likely to be crucial.

So we might see quite a bit of the somewhat more experienced redshirt freshman Ken “Boo” Malcome in the mix to start with.

In terms of the running attack, hopefully we won’t see Bobo trying to make diminutive Carlton Thomas up the middle a primary mode of operation.

The move of Bruce Figgins to fullback should help out quite a bit in terms of pass protection. There might be times when Bobo might want to use Figgins in the tailback spot and have Zander Ogletree at fullback for maximum protection of Aaron Murray.

We’ll see how all that shakes out. But one thing’s for sure: The considerable pressure that was already on young Crowell just amped up. A lot.

Feel free to share your views of Georgia’s prospects in the wake of King’s loss.

JUNKYARD MAIL UPDATE

Brian Stewart writes: With the departure if Caleb King, do you think Branden Smith and/or Nick Marshall get more of a look as a tailback?

I don’t think either one is likely to be used on a regular basis at tailback, but both defensive backs could play key roles on offense. Smith has shown in the past what he can do with his terrifc speed but was used sparingly on offense last year. That was already likely to change this season. The junior cornerback spiced up the G-Day game, scoring a 28-yard touchdown on a catch from Murray and finishing the day with two catches for 38 yards and two carries for 11 yards. Afterward, Bobo said, “He’s such an explosive player. I wish we could have him full time. … He can make plays. We’ve got to continue to find a way to get him on the field.” I think the departure of King will only increase the odds of that happening. As for Marshall, Mark Richt has talked already about possibly using him at quarterback occasionally in the Wild Dawg offense and I’d love to see that happen on a regular basis. But I’ll believe it when I see it. So far, Bobo hasn’t shown that he really understands how to most effectively use the wildcat or Wild Dawg formation.

The last time I heard, in DeKalb county at least, if you refuse to take a breathaliser (sp?) test, a judge and/or jury can assume that’s same thing as failing it. At the same time you can insist on a blood test in ‘addition’ to the breath-test – the point being, you very well may pass the breath test and by the time they take you to wherever they administer the blood test, which is more accurate in the first place, you may indeed be under the ‘limit’. In other words, Hines’ refusal is, in effect, and admission of guilt.

It is for the UGA fans that complain about ex-Tech players getting arrested like Joe Hamilton.

Ask any lawyer and they will tell you it is better to refuse the on-site breathalyzer test. Don’t give the police any evidence. If you have not had a drink in 12 hours then go for it. The threat of loosing your license for not taking the test is a joke too. you can file within 10 days for a hearing and 9-10 times the cop doesn’t show and you win. Never Never Blow unless you have not had a drink in the last 12 hours.

What are you talking about. Joe used his 4 years and was .500 against the Dawgs while at Tech. Tech was 2-2 against UGA from 96-99.

no a 90% win of the hearing and you get to keep your license. Most times you win the hearing because the cop doesn’t show, but even when the cop is there the judge doing the hearing will allow you to have your driving privileges back. You maybe be given restrictions, but you can drive. It cost like $120 to file.

If the colleges are going to provide them with a free education , free food , traveling all over the country and more or less treat them like royalty what kid would turn that down. They will worry about what to do with their life after college. Who knows maybe they will be in that 1% that make it to Pro ball. Also, with four years of college ball if they don’t get to play Pro ball in America some will end up in Canada or over seas which will provide them with more money than a regular job in America. Many will become coaches so by going to College a lot will end up better off than if they didn’t get that opportunity.
I have always been critical of our system in football where college football is Pro footballs minor league but it has been proven that very few communities will support a Semi-Pro football team like they will minor leagues in baseball. Since high school football players are no where near physically ready to go straight to Pro football unless the system changes college is the only way to get to Pro ball and unless the colleges want to funk out a lot of players every year they have to provide a curriculum that even the most academically challenged student can pass.

There is two things about Samuel that is above Ealey and King, HE IS STILL AS DAWG!!!! AND HE IS JUST 20 YEARS OLD. Why cannot some of you realize that no he did not play in the successful programs as King and Ealey, He played both ways. Ealey ran up his stats in his two seasons of 30 games. Samuel did not even take up the game until he was in the ninth grade….that would have been when he was 13 years old. With his size speed and potential WHY DID RICHT AND BOBO EVEN PUT THE CARROT IN FRONT OF HIM AS A FRESHMAN AND GIVE HIM A FEW DOWNS AND PUT HIM ON THE KO TEAM IF THEY DID NOT THINK HE COULD MAKE IT AT RB. So the next year King was hurt Ealey was not ready and after Samuel got hurt and they returned, we went with the two that were 19 year old HS seniors who we lost with while Samuel was on the bench and injured. You will never convince me that not developing a 16 year old who was Academically good enough to enroll at UGA attend Spring training and play some as a freshman was not good enough to be developed as a runningback… As I said…HE IS STILL A DAWG!!!! 20YEARS OLD AND TWO YEARS OF ELIGIBILITY LEFT. A total misuse of talent or potential by the coaches. His name should never be mentioned in the same breath as Sanks, Ealey, nor King…If he is so good at LB why is he back up to Ogletree who as mentioned earlier WE NEED DB Help!!!!! Both of those kids need to be on the field on Defense if they are that good. If not at least get Samuel some Offense work. Who knows what those other Backs will do or become injured….There may be some thuggery there also. It is not like we have the answers of what all those kids will do, nor evidently does
Richt, Bobo and crew. Go Dawgs!!! Speaking of Marshall, Have you seen and heard of some of his thuggery antics???? Just wait. Some of the smaller schools let players get away with murder to have winning seasons or championship seasons, and that is what happens when they have to compete for positions in Athens…THEY CANNOT HANDLE THE FAME. THEY FELL THEY ARE OWED THE POSITION BECAUSE THEY WON IN HS ON A LOWER LEVEL…..The exception is always Herschel but then his team was disciplined and he had a disciplined situation and was not given anything until he proved himself. So admit it Richt and Bobo and staff blue it with Samuel so far. Hopefully some light will go on in their head and realize what mistake they have made.

Good points. I feel the colleges shouldn’t offer these players the chance at a free education, if they are not smart enough to get in like every other student.

Don’t feel sorry for Crowell. He believes he is the man. He wanted to be a Dawg player. He knows what is in-store. I just can’t wait to see if he does like he did in the state playoff game. He was doing bad and started pouting and yelling at his team mates. I don’t think a freshman can get away with that crap. Not unless he is a starting QB or has proven his talent after 5 or 6 games.
