From ‘Dream’ spring to nightmare summer (UPDATED)

Caleb King in better times. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Caleb King in better times. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

So now that UGA has made it official that Caleb King is academically ineligible, where does that leave the Dogs’ running game?

Awfully shaky at best. Yes, incoming “Dream Team” member Isaiah Crowell is expected to be the next great Georgia tailback, but the odds are long against him being fully ready to shoulder that mantle right from the start.

And with Boise State and South Carolina as the opening games, there won’t be any chance for tune-ups.

While Crowell’s running chops might be in fine form early on, chances are he’s going to have a hard time picking up the considerable pass protection duties that tailbacks have in Mike Bobo’s offense. And considering the questions surrounding the offensive line, that’s likely to be crucial.

So we might see quite a bit of the somewhat more experienced redshirt freshman Ken “Boo” Malcome in the mix to start with.

In terms of the running attack, hopefully we won’t see Bobo trying to make diminutive Carlton Thomas up the middle a primary mode of operation.

The move of Bruce Figgins to fullback should help out quite a bit in terms of pass protection. There might be times when Bobo might want to use Figgins in the tailback spot and have Zander Ogletree at fullback for maximum protection of Aaron Murray.

We’ll see how all that shakes out. But one thing’s for sure: The considerable pressure that was already on young Crowell just amped up. A lot.

Feel free to share your views of Georgia’s prospects in the wake of King’s loss.

JUNKYARD MAIL UPDATE

Brian Stewart writes: With the departure if Caleb King, do you think Branden Smith and/or Nick Marshall get more of a look as a tailback?

I don’t think either one is likely to be used on a regular basis at tailback, but both defensive backs could play key roles on offense. Smith has shown in the past what he can do with his terrifc speed but was used sparingly on offense last year. That was already likely to change this season. The junior cornerback spiced up the G-Day game, scoring a 28-yard touchdown on a catch from Murray and finishing the day with two catches for 38 yards and two carries for 11 yards. Afterward, Bobo said, “He’s such an explosive player. I wish we could have him full time. … He can make plays. We’ve got to continue to find a way to get him on the field.” I think the departure of King will only increase the odds of that happening. As for Marshall, Mark Richt has talked already about possibly using him at quarterback occasionally in the Wild Dawg offense and I’d love to see that happen on a regular basis. But I’ll believe it when I see it. So far, Bobo hasn’t shown that he really understands how to most effectively use the wildcat or Wild Dawg formation.

All these fair weather fans blogs- Listen the reason you dont see Florida, Alabama, Auburn or Tennessee have academic problems is because none of them had “Jan Kemp” as a teacher.
Georgia is the most scrutinized Program in the country with academics just because of her. Georgia will always be under the microscope for the next 20 years.
Alot of other schools can get away with it but not Georgia. No these recruits are not 4.0 students but there held to a higher standard than other schools.
You try going to practice 5 times a week, studying late at night, having to watch films, memorizing plays, going to team meetings, talking to the media, finding a way to get around school, balancing family problems, talking to friends/relatives/mom and dad and see where youre at.
So hypocritical of people without even thinking about things. Yeah going to college is one thing but then add all these other duties and see where youre at.
I mean most of us just had to go to school and yeah we had jobs to contend with but then add the physical aspect to your life then at the end of the day you are mentally and physically wasted. Sure there are some that can do it but its a whole different story when youre an athlete.
I feel that most of you here have no friggin idea of what youre talking about unless you have actually played college football for 4 years and have gone through what they go thru.
Such a synical world we live in. How dare any of you chastize these players because 1st and foremost they are people with loving parents with high hopes and asperations of being something in their lives.
Then to hear shameless low life opinionated knows everything people stand there and cast dispersions upon another human being is the lowest thing a person can do.
This is only a sport and we move on in life, watching our kids grow up and sharing great experiences and passing on knowledge to make them better individuals. Instead of throwing daggers you should just commend them 1st and thank them for their contributions to the University because its theirselves they have to reckon with at the end of the day.

Mike,

It’s not Jan Kemp’s fault.

This program didn’t discipline its players or coaches the last five years and it is paying the price.

The new AD is cleaning house and there will be announcements soon on more ineligible players this season.

Another offensive lineman and a linebacker are next.

Stay tuned.

McGarity was hired to make Georgia a top 10 team , every year. There was no way he could have done it any faster than he has because the problem was so widespread with a hand full of players and some of the coaches. Whether CMR and Bobo will be included in the purification is still up in the air. But, CMR is the one who decided that either he and Bobo will succeed together or both will be leaving at the same time. My guess is CMR is on a very short leash and depending on what happens in the first two games could mean if he gets an extension or is replaced. I hope what is happening now will be enough because I like Mark Richt but McGarity knows what it take to be top ten and will not hesitate to replace whoever needs to go.

When a good academic kid of 16 enters GA Early in January, goes through spring training and is used as a 17 year old his freshman year to run the ball less than 30 timand play on special teams.
Everyone complains because he fumbled the last ko vs tech the year uga had Marino. Well next year he had to play TB as an 18 year old because the 20 year old phenom King was hurt and the 19 year old Ealy was not ready because he could not block…..When it was evident we needed help MR later put Ealey in vs LSU to try to get something going even though he never had to block. OK now lets see. Bench Samuel as an 18 year old, red shirt him as a 19 year old, Develop him into a back up LB as a 20 year old and then he graduates with honor as 21 year old that hopefully by his fifth year has been given a chance to start somewhere….Yes, Way to go coaches….Let the older geniuss RB’s play ahead of an honor student that started to college as a 16 year old. He did not develop as a RB because he was two and three years younger than those two mental giants Ealey and King……Richt and coaches wasted Samuel first as a freshman by not keeping him at one position. If they could not coach that kid not to fumble the ball by the time he was 20 years old they should not have used Ealey nor King because neither learned how not to fumble after all their HS and Brilliant Carreer at UGA as 22-23 year old thugs. Do not develop the good kid work with the thugs…Is that Richt and Bobo’s philosophy. What a waste of talent. Several of you talk about how good a lb he is……Well after two years as a rb and one year as a lb Richt and Co still have him on the bench. This my friends is not Samuel’s fault. He has been a total Team player, no complaints, good grades, willing to help the team in any way….but yet Richt and Co go with the thugs at RB. Where are the Thugs………They are gone. Where is Samuel…..Sitting on the bench hoping to play a little defense while we have to teach a rs freshman and a freshman how to block before they can run the ball.

Yes, I am against firing the head football coach In July. You have that 100% correct. I feel pretty confident that is going to be the consensus among “fans like me” too. As far as Fl: First, I’m not sure why you were “waiting” on a answer to a question you have never asked me. Secondly, it’s possible to beat UF this year and it still be the right thing to do for UGA to replace the coach. It’s possible to lose to UF and still win the East as has been the case (the only 3 times we have ever won the east) so that’s not the end all. Your question is flawed, so there is not an answer for it. I promise you the AD and the board do not look at the Florida game in a vacuum, either.

Hey Joe, You’re correct sir. SAMUAL represents yet another “Right Under Your Nose” moment by Richt/Bobo. Keep in mind, these two were the only two coaches in AMERICA recruiting Cam Newton as a tight end!! TWICE. Once out of Westlake, and then out of Blinn JC. Samuel (6′2″ 230 lb.,/43 rushing td(s) jr./sr. yr. high school) is a very explosive running back who was never given a real chance to acclimate himself at the position. In spite of that, he still had 80yd. touchdown run vs. Arkansas as a Soph. In the history of NCAA football, no one was ever moved to backup linebacker after diplaying that kind of ability ! He’s the poster child for Spurrier’s “SOMETHIN’ HAPPENS TO ‘EM.” He needs to get the heck out of there, and transfer to a school that gives him the opportunity to develop at the position that gives him the best chance to reach the next level- RUNNING BACK!

Topp Dogg,

He is simply relating to his peer group, most of which are still in High School.
I would bet that if he turns out to be a terrific RB, most of us UGA fans, wouldn’t care what he does with his hair or his language on a social blog.
He will mature as a person also. It is too bad that King never did, because, he let down a lot of people, not only in football but every place in his life. He let himself down the most though, and that is sad.

Not sure why you’ve gotten off the subject so much, but several of you are dead wrong on Robert Edwards. Goff’s coaching staff had him playing defensive back and returning kicks in the JV Georgia-Georgia Tech game in 1993, just before Goff was fired. That same year, Terrell Davis ran for almost 300 yards in a rout of GT- which included the brawl at the end of the game. Robert Edwards didn’t sniff the field in that game, especially at RB. That win against GT didn’t help Goff in keeping his job.

So… it was Donnan that moved Edwards to RB. I will put any amount of money you want on that.

Keep in mind only 1% of all college players make the Pro’s. Maybe Samuel isn’t good enough for the Pro’s. And if I’m not mistaken it was him that wanted to move to Linebacker. He was a great linebacker in high school and will probably be his best chance to play Pro ball.

in football players. UGA doesn’t even come close to 2nd in the SEC in academics. You are talking about players passing not the difficulty in academics at the university. UGA offers too many joke majors. It is Vandy and Florida as #1 & #2 not UGA. #3 Kentucky, #4 Bama, #5 Ole Miss, #6 UGA.

Junkyard,
While you having dreams and nightmares, UGA is losing players @ a rapid rate; oversigning, heck, we only have 76 scholarship players presently; CMR, CEO of UGA FB, has become one of the worst personnel mgrs on College FB!! He should have dismissed Caleb King and others last year and replaced them with JC Players who could have contributed this year; CMR has left our RB, OL, and WR depth in a quandry!! BTW: While CMR was oot recently, the #2 WR visited UGA and just last nite he committed to SC (Shaq Roland); this is the 2nd time CMR has missed on a visit from a high ranking recruit (Jessemen Dunker, OT, who has committed to FL, visited UGA while almost the entire staff was on vacation); I am totally disgusted w/ his efforts; talent does come to UGA, but there are too many would’ve, should’ve, could’ve scenarios that have happened; “Win, Baby, Win”!!! “You snooze, You Lose”!!!!
