Fan talk: How many wins gets Mark Richt off the ‘hot seat’?

While we cross our fingers and hope that the widespread rumors of academic casualties prove to be nothing more than midsummer fan paranoia, let’s check some Junkyard Mail …

UPDATE: The bad news about Caleb King is official now. He’s been declared academically ineligible. I’ll have more to say later. …

How many wins do the Dogs need to save Mark Richt's job? (Associated Press)

How many wins do the Dogs need to save Mark Richt's job? (Associated Press)

Frank Johnson writes: Seems like every time I get together with my Bulldog buddies, the subject comes up of Mark Richt being on the proverbial “hot seat” and just how many wins this season it will take to keep his job. Looking at the Dawgs’ schedule, I think anything less than 10 wins will be disappointing and grounds for dismissal. What say you?

Only Greg McGarity can possibly say what number of wins would assure Richt’s return and he might not even have made up his mind at this point. Some folks think an 0-2 start could make it tough for Richt to survive the whole season, but I frankly don’t think that’s even a possibility. He could lose the first two and still turn it around. Surely 10 wins guarantees Richt’s continued employment in Athens, but is there any way a 10-2 regular season could be disappointing? Well, if the two losses were to SEC East rivals South Carolina and Florida, I’m sure there’d be grumbling. Still, 10-2 means Richt isn’t going anywhere. Nine wins seems to be the consensus pick for the minimum Richt needs, but, again, it depends on the losses. If they’re blowouts to top rivals, a nine-win season might only lower the temperature a bit on the hot seat. I have heard people make the case that Richt can survive with just eight wins as long as one of them is over the Gators. What do you think? Even with a victory in Jacksonville, four losses still would mean the Dogs lost to someone they probably ought to beat this year.

Daniel Tuohy writes in response to my “numbers” piece the other day: Hi Bill, I’ve seen this “regression to the mean” idea all over the place, and people appear to be a bit confused (as is often the case when probability is involved). So you had this: “if you win or lose an unusually high number of close games in a season, the odds are that you’ll do the opposite the next season to get back to the mean.” That’s not quite right. The point is that in close games luck plays a very important role, and if you lose a whole bunch of them then you were very unlucky. That, however, in no way implies that the opposite will happen the next year (i.e. that you will win the majority of close games). Luck in one season is completely independent of luck in other seasons. The point is that relative to an unlucky season, any other season is likely to be better in comparison. That’s “regression to the mean.” The mean is winning 50% of your close games. So if we won 0% of our close games 2010, then if in 2011 we just hit the mean (not get lucky, just be average) we’ll win 50% of such games and have a much more attractive ledger come December — relative to 2010.

Thanks for the clarification. Yeah, I oversimplified the concept. But I warned you about me and math.

Marion Campbell writes in response to “101 Reasons to Be a UGA Fan”: Saw the listing and did not remember the “Cowboy” and “Moonpie.” Could you elaborate? I grew up in Clemson. My brother played for UGA. I lived in Athens for 10 years. You might find it interesting to know that Clemson’s R. C. Edwards, one time president, was often just called, “RC” and his wife was called “Moon Pie” in reference to the famous country snack duo.

Guard Joel “Cowboy” Parrish and tackle Mike “Moonpie” Wilson were starting offensive tackle and guard on Vince Dooley’s 1976 SEC championship team. Parrish got his nickname when he arrived in Athens as a freshman wearing a 10-gallon cowboy hat. Dan Magill tried to start a legend that Wilson ate moonpies by the carton, but the player really couldn’t stand them. He got the nickname from his round face. Both were All-Americans that season. Parrish played for the Dogs 1973-76 and was named the SEC’s outstanding lineman by the Atlanta Touchdown Club in 1977. He played some pro ball in Canada. Wilson lettered 1974-76. He went on to play with the Bengals and Seahawks and is in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. They were a terrific tandem on the OL. Said Dooley: “We never had a better blocking combination.” A favorite memory is from the 1976 win over Alabama. The Dogs were running the veer option using tailback Kevin McLee and two quarterbacks, Matt Robinson (the passer) and Ray Goff (the runner). The massive OL was so good that when Robinson misread a signal from the sideline and ran an option into the strong side of the Tide defense instead of the weak side as intended, he still ended up in the end zone. It was that kind of day.

Dan writes: Bill, Need to mention [South Carolina's win being the] third straight NCAA baseball title for SEC and ninth overall. ACC still has only one (Wake Forest 1955). Miami’s four titles came before they were in the ACC. Speaking of futility, what two schools have the most appearances in the college world series without a title? Answer: FSU with 20 and Clemson with 12. North Carolina with nine is only fourth in futility — GTU, who seems to lose to UGA in the super regionals, has only three appearances with, of course, 0 titles. That ACC sure is a powerful well-rounded conference!

SEC! SEC! Seriously, it might be slight consolation for the Diamond Dogs, but being the team that knocked the eventual College World Series champion out of the SEC tournament provides a notable asterisk to an up-and-down season.

Also I would like to say I want to win the Boise game but if we lose the game it doesnt matter the most important game at the begging of the season is USCeast we win that game we are in the drivers seat for the SECeast crown. Also the loser of that game has never played in the SEC championship game.

I believe Richt needs to win 9 games this year for job security. After the first two games, UGA has a pretty manageable schedule. My new favorite website threw out an interesting stat today: Only 14 of Mark Richt’s 96 wins as a head coach have come against FCS or Non-AQ opponents with a below .500 WP%. So basically he is not just beating up on cupcakes. You guys really should give the 3 day free trial a shot. I am pumped for the season!!

8 wins = new coach
9 wins = warm/hot seat, but another year in Athens
10 wins = significantly cooler seat
11 wins = significant partying
12 wins = Dawg fans asking who all the other crazy fans were who wanted Richt gone
13 wins = Same as 12, except with more hysteria
14 wins = statue of Richt with zero fans willing to admit they wanted him gone

I could stomach 4 defeats if they are hard fought and close. I know that’s ‘weak’ in some’s mind, but I do feel like there has been a wake up call in Athens. I’m pulling for Mark and the Dawgs to win them all, but lot’s of things happen during a season, good and bad. Murray could go down in game one. we could have a couple of academic problems pop up………Or the good Lord could shine down on us and everything go our way………..as with everything in life, we’ll see. Just enjoy the season.

I think 10 wins get richt of the hot seat (this includes a bowl game). 9 wins (including the bowl game) may keep richt his job depending on the condition of the wins and losses, were the wins close and the losses blowouts or was it the other way around? Either way 9 wins without an SEC East title doesn’t take richt off the hot seat, at most it gives him one more year. 8 wins or less, without an sec east title, he’s gone imo.

I hope UGA has a real good season and richt stays for a long time.

Richt can get away with winning eight games as long as one is in Jacksonville. However, if he wins nine and STILL loses to the Gators, he may be in trouble.

Florida is very vulnerable this year, maybe more so than last, so a FOURTH consecutive loss to the Gators might be a little hard to swallow.

President Adams is a BIG Richt fan. It’s HIS call. He will give Mark every benefit of the doubt. Look for 8 wins to get an extension. That won’t set well, but that’s how I see it. 7 wins will get a new coach.

How many wins keeps Richt off hotseat? Well, if Richt goes 0-6 against winning teams like 2010, he’s fired. Go 1-4 against ranked teams like he has gone 2-9 last 2 seasons, he’s fired.

Richt needs to show he can beat the best. He needs to beat Florida & South Carolina, or I suspect he’ll be fired.

Richt faces some solid teams, he needs to win 3 of these, including SC & Fla:
Florida, Boise, South Carolina, Miss State, Auburn

Richt needs to take over play calling responsibilities if Bobo gets too predictable (as if he won’t). Head coach is a position of responsibility and Richt needs to accept that or retire to Honduras. Sick of the apathy and low expectations in this Ath Dept.

A few months ago I was hearing strong rumors that CMR basically had a 2 game season. Boise and USCe. However, UGA makes a pile of money on their athletic programs…. #2 in the nation per the latest report. I personally think that the most important stat to Mike Adams is…… How much money is in the checking account if you know what I mean. I bet CMR can win as few as 7 games and most of the staff will be kept. Which is fine with me. Fans need to remember… UGA is not and will never be Bama, LSU or UF. I don’t think Mark should have to win any games to be secure in his job.
The UGA fans just need to learn that there are more important things than winning football games. And the fan base needs to expel from its midst those fanatics who think that they should have winning seasons every year or two. You can get just as drunk at a game you lose as you can if you win. Tailgating, drunkeness, cursing, trash talking, fighting, and littering go on just as effectively at UGA regardless of the score in the games. It is only the next day when they sober up that the UGA fans get unhappy about the score.

It’s hard to put a number on Richt until we see how it plays out. We could be devastated by injuries and end up with six or seven wins and acknowledge great coaching held it all together. Without injuries I think it has to be minimum eight, probably nine with drastic improvement in penalties, turnovers, and effort. Also, the absolute coach killer would be a loss to tech…it just can’t happen again. As far a getting off to a fast start if you think about it we could go 0-2 and still end up 10-2. If we lose both of those but the staff holds it together they’ll still be fielding a better team than anyone else we play except maybe Florida (and we just don’t know what’ll happen there this year). On the other hand, if we somehow start 2-0 the pressure will really be on because there should be no reason not to be in a BCS bowl at minimum. All in all, I think we have to trust in McGarity to make the right call. We’re lucky to have Mark Richt but he does have to turn this around. I’m betting he will….this defense will be improved and could be downright nasty. Coach Tereshinki’s S&C program should also reap huge benefits.

IMO, we’d be fools to get rid of Mark Richt. The entire deal is cyclical. There are ebbs and flows. Look at every team in the conference over the last ten years, and it’s plain as day. You simply will not be great every year. Ain’t gonna happen. Who would you hire anyway? There’s not a lot of Knute Rockne’s out there. We could do a hell of a lot worse that Mark Richt. Stay the course with Richt and we’ll be just fine.

It’s wrong to put a number on it but if I had to, I’d say 9 games. What the Bulldawg nation is looking for in my opinion is good hard competitive FOOTBALL. It’s one thing to play well and hard and lose to an equally matched opponent but it’s another thing to be behind in a game and continue to run off tackle when it’s 3rd and 8 or continue to throw to the same receiver again and again when others are open.

If CMR can put on a great show, use what he has effectively and motivate his players to not only play hard but well then all will be fine.

If we lose to Boise and Sc, I don’t believe this team has the cajones to recover.

Richt has to beat Florida this year in order to survive.
Barring a major injury to Murray, Richt has no excuses to not win that game.

Hard to say — but if he racked up 9 wins, I would think that would be enough. More importantly, I think we should all be looking for the following things in 2011: A steep drop in off-field issues (e.g., arrests and disciplinary problems); the team hanging tough and playing close in the 4th quarter (thanks to the new S&C program); indications that CTG’s defense has kicked in in Year 2, with a year’s worth of teaching under his belt and better role-players at critical positions; and less predictable play-calling on offense thanks to CMR’s increased involvement.

I have nothing personal against Coach Bobo and get tired of the “bozo” nicknames, etc. BUT, regardless of how many points we averaged last year, his playcalling in the important games is a problem UNLESS our defense returns to prominence. We couldn’t outscore Auburn when that was our only chance to win, we couldn’t score against Central Florida (gag), we almost let GA Tech come back and win because we stopped doing what Tech was totally incapable of stopping, etc. (Tech didn’t stop our passing game – we did.) We run the same plays in predictable patterns, then wonder why the defense shuts it down! Specifically, if we throw an incomplete pass on 1st down, Bobo’s habit is to follow it with a run between the tackles. With our underperforming OL over the past 2 years, that usually left us with 3rd and long (forcing our inexperienced QBs into obvious passing downs). We run our 3rd string TB who weighs about 34 pounds up in the middle instead of using his speed to try to get outside, then wonder why our tiny tailback doesn’t produce results…….. We have a very athletic TE (Charles), yet he was an afterthought in the offense for most of 2010. How frustrating!

IF Coach Richt’s goal is to be a Top 5 program, we need a Top 5 offense and a Top 5 defense. Our defense should be vastly improved. BUT, does anyone really believe that Coach Bobo is one of the top 5 strategists and playcallers in the country!?!?! He seems to be a good QB coach, so let him do that…….. Coach Richt HAS to get involved with the offense IF Bobo will not overcome his own predictability.

Terrific mistakes evaluating talent in the recruitment of offensive line prospects. This lack of talent has led to attrition. This attrition, coupled with injuries, many pre-existing, has created virtually no depth. And facing this problem, to then bring in the 9th rated offensive line class in the conference (per Rivals) borders on outright negligence. And its a two edged sword. The in-state talent that was available is now starting for your competition, and playing key roles in getting you beat, directly (see Roke Watkins at S. Carolina), or indirectly (see Colorado and Central Fla.) The guy should go the way of Mike Shula, be an assistant, and coach qb(s) in the NFL.

Now regarding Richt, I have supported this coach and have been proud of the way he handles himself and the integrity he brings to the program and the on field results. However, the time has come for him to take it up a notch or he will need to leave. I will be the first to admit he is a victim of his own success. But if he doens’t win 10 games and beat a first year florida head coach, he needs to go.

Candidates?

Dan Mullen
Chris Peterson
Gus Malzahn
Kirby Smart

That is a realistic list and provides no guarantee of success but the fanbase/alumni/donors will demand a change.

As I posted earlier CMR needs 9 wins and one of them to be vs florduh but we need to remember that we are relatively inexperienced and thin up front on our Oline this year who knows how well we will be able to run the ball this year. The only two question marks about this team IMHO are the safety’s and Oline other than that our skill positions, LB, DL, and QB are going to be just fine.

I think he keeps the job at 9 wins ( with big conditions), but those L’s do not need to include UF, GT, SC. I think he can survive a 3 loss combo of Boise, Miss St and UT to reach 9 wins. Also two conference loses has you in the SEC TG more than likely.

If he does not win the Title he cannot afford to have the showing that South Carolina did and couple that with a bowl performance like they did also. He reaches the title game and then limps in like that to finish 9-5 and he is toast.

The Dawgs have a very favorable schedule for the most part this year. They have the athlets to be in every game but we do have a very glaring weakness in our experience at key positions. Our Degefnse is capable of keeping the DAWGS in every game, if our offense can play to their strengths to negate some of the weaknesses. We need time for our OL backups and RB to establish themselves. Our offense willl have to be played with a mixture of control and some of the ordinary plays on occasion. I am not worried about eh players as much as I am our offensive play calling coach. He will need to use a fair amount of imagination and inovation to insure we can move the ball. I think and hope, with CMR being a little more involved in the game as it progresses, that he can. This I beleive is the year of the coach at UGA. I am not worried about the defense, but the offensive coach will need to step it up. Anything less than 9 wins, and defeating our chief nemisis, and there will need to be some changes made for the following year.

You can’t base this stuff on a certain number. You base it on whether a coach is doing all the things necessary to be successful, like discipline, effort, recuiting, etc. You base it on if a coach has control of his players and the program is going in the right direction. If you base it on record alone, then alot of schools would have already replaced their coaches.

Folks, Do you guys realize that some guy named Donnan got fired for 8 wins on a reguslar basis. Here’s the problem, Donnan never beat Fla, and lost to Tech. If Richt beats “the Big Boys” Fla,Aub,Now S.C., and Boise State then he’ll be o.k. But then again if if beats then all if shoulde run the table. I predicted in 09 that this would be Georgia’s year to play in the BCS Nat’l title game. I think with this revamped Defense, and a proven offense that can move the ball, this unit can be special. The key to this unit is how hard King, (Caleb not Tavaris ) wants it, or how much Crowell wants to show he’s the real deal. On paper UGA looks great, but it comes down to one thing, coaching. Sorry Dawg Nation, but this is where it hurts the most. Not Richt, but Bobo. In case some of you don’t see this, in back to last years Dallas Cowboys team when there head coach got axed, and there asst, Jason Garrett took over. Funny how they started winning. Watch Bobo closely. He’s hungry for that job,

I think Richt should come back if the season ends with at least a 500 record AND one that showed better player discipline OFF the field.

Is that being too easy on Richt? Nope. Last time I checked firing the coach doesn’t keep members of the O-line from getting hurt or underachievers from leaving the program, or give a very talented freshman class a year of experience. It’s up to the players to perform. I think Richt has shown he can coach. The program has taken a step back, sure … but from such great heights.

The one thing that (IMHO) will sink the season and Richt’s tenure at UGA is a serious injury to Aaron Murray. If the Dogs lose Murray, they will be in a similar situation to my Jackets last year after losing Nesbitt…out of contention and lucky to win another game.

I can’t see us being favored in any of those except maybe Miss St. Auburn will be a toss up.

He’s got to beat Florida! The only way he can get by with losing to Florida again is if the gators are really, really good this year and I don’t see that happening with John Brantley at QB and a first-year head coach. If he loses to Florida again, he needs to go. Honestly, I don’t think the Boise game should have much of an impact, because it’s a nonconference game, but South Carolina is a must-win. THe good thing is that we have the game in Athens.

DawginLex,
I’m telling ya to watch out for both of ‘em this year. They are pure burners and I’m hearing Weis (aka Cheeseburger Charlie) is going to be very creative in finding ways to get those two the ball in space. Our biggest question will be our lines on both sides of the ball. While very talented, also very thin. Much like UGA, we won’t be able to afford many missed games due to injuries or supsensions.

Brian

July 8th, 2011

If we’re talking about the regular season, anything less than 9 wins is unacceptable. Georgia doesn’t have to play alabama OR LSU, so the only tough teams they play from the West are Miss State and Auburn, who should be rebuilding. Miss State will be a good team, but since the game is between the hedges, it’s a game Georgia needs to win if they want to win the East. If they do worse than 9-3 with the type of quarterback that they have, there is no reason Mark Richt should keep his job.

ga gator

John I agree that the Gators are iffiy at best this year. One things all Gators are hoping for is that Weis does some similar majic with Brantley as he did with a 6th round draft pick from Michigan by the name of Tom Brady. Incidently, Brady’s QB coach at Michigan who coached him down to a 6th round pick was none other than Scott Loefler who was Brantley’s coach last year and happily Muschamp fired his sorry behind.

I’d say richt is done unless McGarity gives him a pass.

However, who’s fault is it that we are in this mess?

Richt

If the defense plays lights out and we can generate enough offense from Murray, we can maybe win 9 games. If the 3 losses are close hard fought games, you could make the argument that richt should stay.

11 years is a long time though. It may just be time for it to end.

Samuel didn’t have a fumbling problem in high school. If it is a problem at Uga, maybe a little coaching would help. Oh wait, your running backs coach is nearly as young as your players, and was a wide receiver! Samuel hasn’t played linebacker since high school (5 years ago) and you guys now have him starting! Where’s Marcus Dowtin? Where’s Nick Williams? They were experienced LB(s)! Oh wait, they’re gone because ” Pudge” Grantham wants more size at Linebacker. The University of Georgia just confirmed what had been a raging rumor all day. Starting tailback Caleb King has been ruled academically ineligible.

King apparently was unable to meet the NCAA’s satisfactory progress rule. King has not returned phone calls, texts or emails seeking comment.

Speculation that King had fallen short began from King’s own tweets at Twitter.com this morning.

First he posted: “Somethings u cant control, and what seems bad right now might turn out good. Too [sic] all of my homeboyz hold UGA down don’t let them brake [sic] u…”

Later he wrote: “I see u when I see u. U cant stress about it Just let God take control.”

Several UGA players replied later with sympathetic responses. But no one at Georgia commented on all the speculation until spokeman Claude Felton confirmed via a phone call, “yes, Caleb King is academically ineligible for fall semester.”

It’s pretty simple… if he starts out 0-2 he will be fired during the season. Goes 1-1 he will limp through the season and be fired at the end of the year. If he starts 2-0 he is off the hot seat. Because starting 2-0 will get him to the Georgia dome to face the #1 team in the land. UGA will be ripped but Richt will survive because the winner will be the eventual national champion.

JB

Richt will not be fired DURING the season for ANY reason. That’s what Bammer and Auburn do. Deer hunting, fishing and football is about all they know over there. If they have a bad season, it’s just summed up that that ole boy ain’t cheat’n hard enough.

He’d have to win the East….but it will never happen. He’s not coaching against Zook, Tuberville, Shula, Croom anymore in the SEC. Better coaches have exposed him over the last 5-6 years as the average coach that he truly is.

7 losses in a season at UGA is unacceptable under any circumstances short of a team plane crash.

Short answer: Win the East. Better Answer: Win the East with a win against UF. Specific answer: 4, Beat SC, UT, AU, and GT. Truth of the matter: He will never be off the hot seat with some. He is not on this season with others. That argument has been rehashed ad nauseam per every single thread posted on the ajc, including the weather, the economy, politics, the war, and climate change.

Lots of “reported” news that folks are getting way too upset over. If the truth is that Caleb King is academically ineligible then rest assured someone else will be toting the ball and move on. College football is a revolving door that lets folks in and lets folks out. Eligibility issues, injuries, coaches tenures, incoming financial donations and the pulse rate of the fan base as perceived by the AD and on up the line all bear significant weight on the future of a head coach. Conversations between said coach and the UGA administration probably have occured that would shed light on what expectations are actually even out there. eYe doubt McGarity or anyone else has set a specific number of wins as a statute of Richt continuing. There are alot of things to look at and evaluate in being fair not only to Richt but to the program as well. The biggest factor is whether he can regain control of an once solid program that has declined in quality whether it is due to choice of assistants or a general lack of proper attention or ability from the head coach himself. eYe just don’t see a numbers game deciding this thing in it’s entirety. The governing body at UGA whom have the decisive power to decide will, like the rest of us, know whether Richt has control of the program in good hands or not. The defining moment is not very far away.

Humm,

Reference C. King, we are now at updated plan number 5 for the coming season on the offense, LOL. It appears, once again that C. King has proven that you can be lazy and not succeed. I believe that CMR has got to cut him loose and put him off the team. He has shown by his actions tha he is not reliable and he has let down his team mates once again. I would guess he will not be a member of any NFL team in the future, so it is obvious, with all he had to lose, he just is either too lazy or doesn’t care. I hate to judge a person, but all indications are that he is going to have a hard life of struggle ahead of him. Before anybody says, he is another UGA failure, remeber, he was highly recruited out of High School by a lot of SEC schools, so they should thank UGA for recruiting him, or they would have him. Surely CMR gave this kid every chance to succeed and he made the decision not to. Sad, sad commentary about a young kid, who could have written his own ticket in life, but is satisfied with failure.

@Flat Tire I totally agree with you. I am tired of hearing we will be happy with winning ten games and beating UF. Don’t get me wrong that would be a great thing to hear that the dawgs won ten games this year and they beat UF but what is the purpose for playing if you are not playing for a championship? I think that the goal year in and year out is to beat UF, win the east, win the conference championship, and try and get to the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Anything less than them goals are mediocre and will keep UGA at the state their in now. Every team in the league dreams of both of those championships and it is time for UGA to want the same. This however, starts at the top with the AD and president and then trickle down the chain until it hit the players.

I still believe that Richt, Bobo,& Grantham are on the “3 Year Plan”. If 2011 is not what McGarity wants then he will tell everyone to start making plans elsewhere for the future unless the program has definitely turned the corner in 2012. I expect no changes in the coaching ranks until the 2012 season has been completed. Then we May see all the Football Coaches Fired….

Dawg 39 you got it pretty much correct. Doubt if many of the retards posting on here attended many Dawg club meetings this spring, but McGarity said on more than one occassion it wasn’t necessarily the number of wins but the progress of overall program including off field issues.

truedawg

July 8th, 2011
11:25 pm

I have to agree with some others on here. I don’t think there is a magic number in place. just what direction the program is headed. No one could see the loses on the OL or the loses at RB. I see progress in the program. No arrests, and better work ethic in place. Even if the DAWGS start 0-2 I think CMR stays on board unless its ugly. If there aren’t injuries, or other off field issues, I expect the team to be hitting there stride mid season much like 2007. I do believe bad losses late in the season could spell trouble for CMR though. That is unless the issues mentioned before aren’t in place. The season has many winable games…on paper, but who saw AU last year coming? who saw SC for that matter? The only number that I see changing things for CMR this year is $ donated. IF fans are upset about a certain loss, Sc, Tech, or UF then Adams might have to give in to that pressure. IMO anything less than 9 wins, barring no team issues ie injuries arrests etc., would make me lose faith in the state of leadership. I have met CMR many times and like the man very much as a coach and a man. I have said on here many time I think second only to Erk, he’s the best coach to ever be at UGA. But its about winning and being competive. To say winning only 8 but beating Sc and UF is enough would mean we lost games that we should have won!! What is UF or SC ends up being an SEC champ? does a loss there mean UGA is going backwards? I’ll be pulling for the DAWGS and Richt, win or lose. But lest hope its winning. GO DAWGS!!!

RedandBlackDAWG

I would think and hope a big consideration is keeping them off the Police Blotters this year, although I am not sure any coach can baby sit that much if needed. No one can accuse CMR of not providing the morale compass or encouragement they need or want, but it is up to the kids to avoid those circumstances.
It seems like the task facing CMR gets a little bigger each day, so we will just have to see how the season progresses both on and off the field. I personally hope he is successful, because he is someone the university should be proud to have representing them. It all boils down to the big bucks though, so UGA’s hand may be forced, If we have a real bad season. Then if the AD is forced to make a change, it might be principles be damned, just win football games, like a lot of the other schools do. Money rules college sports now.

I agree with UGA Insider Georgia is a team that will give you a game, but they can’t close the deal in the end it is just the way they are built to play. Not such a good ending for Joel Parrish: http://jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/082501/met_7040406.html

Joel “Cowboy” Parrish – was arrested in Australia , were arrested along with three Colombians on July 27 by Australian authorities who allege the men smuggled 2,457 pounds of cocaine that a South American drug cartel planned to distribute in Sydney.

Australian officials say the seizure is the largest in their nation’s history and would have an estimated value of $22.3 million to $33.5 million in America, U.S. officials said.

Swamp Gator,

Makes you kind of wonder about this guys mental state. Maybe he took one too many head slaps in football. First he skips the NFL for the CFL. I would think he lost a fair chunk of change there. Then he plays tow years and leaves to become a lumberjack in Canada. Can’t imagine he made a whole lot of bucks compared to the CFL . I lived three years pretty close to where he off loaded the drugs in Western Australia, and if he was planning on distributing them in Sydney, I would have thought, he might want to be a little more watchful of his fuel, since he was on the other side of the continent and either way he went, had about a 3500 mile trip still to go. Depending on whether he was going south, or north, the weather would be a problem. North might be a cyclone or two to worry about, and since it is winter there, south would have or could have been a challenge. Obviously, he was not one of our more scholarly graduates, LOl.
