Who will be Dogs’ true freshman impact players?

Will true freshman Malcolm Mitchell make an impact at wide receiver? (Chip Towers / AJC)

Will true freshman Malcolm Mitchell make an impact at wide receiver? (Chip Towers / AJC)

ESPN.com’s Edward Aschoff took a look at true freshmen who could have an impact on their teams this fall, and for the Georgia Bulldogs he singled out running back Isaiah Crowell (no kidding!) and wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell.

Crowell, he says, “arrives in Athens with a ton of hype. Georgia has yet to find its feature back and Crowell has all the talent to be that player. Some think he could start by the midpoint of the season.”

Mitchell, he notes, “played both sides of the ball in high school, but Georgia’s staff really likes what he could do at receiver. He’s a tremendous athlete and will get a chance to earn playing time for the fall, especially with some unproven receivers already on Georgia’s roster.”

Crowell and Mitchell are probably the safest bets among the true freshmen to have a big impact, but who else from their class do you see getting a chance at considerable playing time?

Could Damian Swann or Nick Marshall enter the picture at the unsettled safety spot? Marshall, of course, already has been mentioned as also getting possible spot duty on offense. What about the Rev. Ray Drew at outside linebacker? Can Georgia keep him off the field? And considering how thin the Dogs are on the OL, might Zach DeBell or Watts Dantzler have a shot at making an impact?

(Sorry, originally had the injured Xzavier Ward listed there when I meant DeBell.)

Feel free to share your thoughts on Georgia’s true freshmen.

GETTING READY FOR GAME DAY

If you’re not sure yet where you’re going to park this season, you need to know that UGA’s Parking Services department will offer season parking spots in its Athens decks starting July 11 on a first come, first served basis. Up for grabs will be parking permits in four locations on campus: the North Campus, Carlton Street, Performing Arts Center and South Campus parking decks. South deck permits are limited to four per customer. The Hull Street deck is not available this year. The price is $120 for all six home games, plus a shipping and handling charge. Permits will be sold online at gameday.uga.edu (click in the parking tab).

JACK DAVIS PRINTS

Prints by UGA alum Jack Davis are going to be auctioned in Statham. (University of Georgia)

Prints by UGA alum Jack Davis are going to be auctioned in Statham. (University of Georgia)

An auction of Georgia Bulldogs prints by famed illustrator Jack Davis is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Breffle Auction Co. at 1906 Railroad Street in Statham, just outside Athens. The Athens Banner-Herald reports the prints are part of the estate auction of a former publisher who worked with Davis, a UGA alum known for his great Mad Magazine covers. John Breffle estimates 1,000 prints will be available, with 15 to 20 different selections of Davis’ work, and some are autographed by Davis. Stacks of the prints (about 10 to 15 per stack) will be auctioned and Breffle expects them to go for between $200 and $300. Nothing dresses up a Bulldog room like an original Jack Davis!

That’s fair @WDE. There’s no point in a blog if every one gets along and holds hands the whole time. Just trying to stir the pot a little bit. Hope you have a great 4th as well. Maybe I’ll see you on the lake. Of course I won’t know its you, but irregardless. God Bless America!

I don’t NEED to defend the guy. What does that even mean. He IS the coach of my college football team, so I simply know what My options are. If I plan to pull for the tem to win, he will win. If they lose he loses. If it too many we’ll go another direction. And bet my bottom dollar , I’ll be more realistic about the need ot replace him, why, with whom, and in what timeframe than you. Liking the man has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I don’t NEED to sit here and convince you how awesome I am by pitching a fit about a 6-7 season. I’m pretty sure that’s understood to be no good.

I don’t NEED to pretend as if he shoulda/coulda/woulda got fired already, because everybody, including you, knows damn well that wasnt going to happen last year, and frankly I just don’t do make believe roleplaying.

@don’t get it,

Wow! You are a breath of of fresh air. Fortunately for all of your ranting and raving, the people that have the power to make the decision on rather to keep or fire Richt, are not asking for your input. Believe me when I say, you can moan and complain until Jesus comes back and it won’t change a thing. If you have that attitude towards management on your job and you worked for me, I would have fired you in a New York minute. Your choices are: (1) deal with what’s already in place or (2) find a new team to cheer for until the AD follows your advice. I don’t think that he’s looking for your advice. In fact; I’m sure that he’s not looking for your advice.

Do any of you read in the Atlon mag( I think that’s the one) where they ask an opposing coach to comment on said team? The comment from this year about Georgia sounds like it came right from this blog by a hater. Scary.

dont get it, yes, it is the job of the coach to bring a better team. Do we really need to pretend to be 3rd graders here. I have NEVER said anything differently. I feel dumber just answering that question.

How many losses is fair to critisize? One. I have. Knock yourself out. If this blog contained just fair critisism of the coach’s team losing to somebody, wouldn’t that be great. And imagine if there was actually a discussion of what went wrong, and what needed to happen, and what needs to happen to corect that. That would be great wouldn’t it?

I just have a very low personal tolerance for overly simplified emotional rants, and pretending we are going to fire our Head Football coach in June.

Marinedog, I agree with you…up to a point………But this football team is not run by tax dollars. It’s run by tickets holders who pay a lot of money….If “@don’t get it” is a ticket holder, he does have a right to voice a concern as any customer would. If he’s not a paying customer with no skin in the game, then he does need to accept the product as is. My 2 cents.

WDE!! Pompous, takes alot of balls to sit behind a computer and type and call people names. You are showing your true colors and lack of intelligence. Simply stating that i will not support a coach that has brought this program to it’s knees, and simply asking all of your Richt lovers to give me one reason to believe this clown will turn this mediocre program around. But all you and Altamaha can do is call people names. The fact is you can’t give me or anyone a reason, because there is none. This clown has been outrecruited, outcoached, and outsmarted so much the last 3 years that it has become a joke to the rest of the SEC and the nation. For a coach to have no depth on the O.L., W.R, R.B, Q.B, L.B, C.B, and Safety after he has been at the same school 10 years is a total joke. I guess this clown and his coaches never look at practice and realize that they have only a handful of players at every postion that can compete in the SEC. But hey Richt knows what he is doing!!! My ass, if he can’t see at practice that he has no Safeties, one corner, 2 linebackers, one D.L, and maybe one O.L. that could start for our biggest rivals in the SEC, then he is a bigger fool than even i thought. Either come with facts, or go stick your head back in the sand.

A program like UGA should NEVER be in a position to depend on true freshman to make an impact. That being said, I believe Watts Dantzler will make the most impact only because of depth issues on the OL. For all those who think Crowell is going to be the next Lattimore, be careful! Richt never plays freshman very much at the RB position because they usually can’t learn the protection packages. Not to mention the kid needs to show he can stay healthy, something he didn’t do in high school.

@JB,

I get it, but ranting and raving and personal insults without having all of the facts as to what has caused the team to slide is fruitless. None of us on this blog knows everything that has taken place behind the scenes. It’s been 1 losing season out of 10 years. The AD has already said that he’s going to give him the chance to turn things around. If he doesn’t, then he’s gone. Everyone is aware of that, including Richt himself. I think that some of the bloggers are hoping that he fails so that he can be fired. A new head coach is not going to turn things around overnight.

Most of you hating on CMR have never attended UGA or ever donated a cent to the Bulldawg program so just shut your mouths. You have no ground to stand on. It’s like when people complain about the President but don’t vote. You’ll complain and complain when he’s losing but jump on the bandwagon when he wins. Let’s be honest he is one of the winningest coaches in the entire country. Period. You can’t argue with that. I wonder how many great coaches had a couple of subpar seasons. Oh yeah–all of them. If you’re a Bulldawg start supporting your coach because you’ve got no other options. Unless you’re on the UGA Athletic board there’s nothing you can do about it. Get over yourselves and get on board with CMR because he is YOUR coach. So when you bash him just remember you are bashing YOUR own coach. YAHHHH TRICKS!!!!

I’ll bet my first unborn male child that Richt leads our DAWGS for at least another 5 years.

In college football no one team dominates over a long period of time. USC and Miami are just a couple to name. In the late 90’s and the early part of the 2000’s those teams were at the top of college football. Now both are trying to get the programs back to being relevant.

I would love to know about all of these people bashing our coach. Do they donate to the general fund? Do they donate to a particular school, ie. business, medical, ect? Do they donate to the athelitic fund? Do they buy season tickets (I have for 26 years)? Do they attend games on tickets they buy, or someone like me gives them? Do they go to away games, Florida, Colorado, Arizona ect?

If the answer is yes to any of the above questions, I might care what they have to say about Coach Richt. If the answer is no, then they are trolls and they need to troll someplace else. Because all of us who answer the above question with yeses are true Georgia fans and their opinions mean something.

Richt’s loyalty to his staff may or may not end up being what speeds up his retirement, but being loyal, after all, isn’t a bad thing to have on one’s toombstone.

A program like UGA won 10 games 4 times in 18 years from 84-2001.One thing nobody likes to admit here is that UGA is not Bama,Aub,Lsu etc…there are some things that will be overlooked at those schools that will never be tolerated at UGA.You can try and delude yourself otherwise but that is a fact. Now with the new AD being a FLA guy it will be interesting to see if the kids in Athens will get as much leeway on some personal conduct issues as the ones in Gainsvile had.I doubt it but we’ll see.
I remember back in 07-08 there was all this chatter about CMR recruiting to many “Thugs”…a lot of folks claimed they didn’t want UGA becoming the next Miami or FSU.Tons of “I’d rather win the right way” type of comments.Guess what? Those “thugs” are winning championships at FLA,BAMA,LSU and AUB.Now all of a sudden you are jealous…but at the same time you know damn well Richt wont be able to get away with a lot of “questionable” tactics in Athens. Why?Because Adams don’t give a damn about your angst at our rivals success.UGA is going to do it the “right” way period.

I think Corey Moore will make the biggest impact at the safety position. I think he will be very physical and put some licks on the opposing team. I do hope Malcolm Mitchell, Chris Conley, and Sanford Seay step up become big time WRs. I. Crowell will be a welcome site if he learns how to block on pass plays. We need him on the field at all times when the offense is out there to give us another weapon but, I do see Nick Marshall as being a Hines Ward type of player or better.
