Another preseason pick likes Dawgs in SEC East

Blair Walsh topped one of ESPN's many SEC lists. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Blair Walsh topped one of ESPN's many SEC lists. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

ESPN.com’s SEC coverage team, Chris Low and Edward Aschoff, so far have spent the summer making lists. Lots of lists. They’ve compiled conference rankings looking at each position on the basis of team strength and individual players (Georgia’s Blair Walsh topped all SEC place-kickers, for example).

And after all that was done, they crunched the numbers all together and have come up with an overall ranking. As Aschoff explains it, “For our overall team rankings, we took all eight position rankings and found the mean for each team. Obviously, the lower score, the better — just like golf.”

Alabama came out on top, as you’d expect, and the SEC West dominated the top of the chart, with Arkansas second, followed by LSU. But Georgia pulled an upset by nudging out South Carolina for fourth place.

And, says Aschoff: “That gives Georgia the SEC East in our book. The Bulldogs also had 13 players ranked in our position rankings, with seven making it in the top five. Even with those offensive questions, Georgia has some pieces in place to make a real run in the East. The Bulldogs would feel right at home in Atlanta for the SEC championship game against Alabama (if our rankings hold true).”

So we can add that to the growing list of preseason picks that like Georgia in the East.

KEEPING DAWG FANS OUT

Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich has made an appeal for Jackets season ticket holders to purchase additional tickets to the game against UGA at Grant Field this season so as to keep tickets out of the hands of Dogs fans.

“Two years ago,” he writes, “you all responded en masse and our entire remaining allotment wound up in the hands of our season ticket group. The result was an overwhelming display of Gold and White support at that critical state rivalry game.”

Which Georgia still won, by the way.

He continues that with the last day for season ticket holders to exclusively purchase single-game tickets and request additional tickets to the Georgia game coming up on June 30, “we still have a long way to go to get all of these tickets claimed by our Georgia Tech faithful. Please take the time to purchase your additional Georgia tickets now and help us maintain that great home field advantage when we face the Dawgs.”

Yeah, I know. Pathetic, isn’t it?

Anyway, if the Tech faithful don’t buy all those tickets, they undoubtedly will be snapped up by Georgia fans. Of course, some Red and Blackers go so far as to buy Tech season tickets to assure a seat at Grant Field when the two schools meet. If you want to go that route, it’ll cost you $350 for the game you want and the six that you don’t care anything about. An additional TECH Fund per-seat contribution is required in some designated sections throughout the stadium, but not all of them. You can buy Tech season tickets here.

BEAT NOTRE DAME!

Kevin McCann writes: “Bill, UGA has fallen behind ND. Can’t let those guys win this thing. Re-post if you can and try to drive some traffic to vote. Thanks for what you do.”

Kevin is referring to the EA Sports NCAA College Football Traditions battle, where our mascot Uga is now up against Notre Dame’s “Play like a champion” sign. As of this morning, the Notre Dame sign was leading with 51 percent of nearly 43,000 votes cast. If you haven’t voted already, support Uga here!

As the brother of a Redcoat Band alum, I get a kick out of a vintage version of “Hail to Georgia” done by the Redcoats and the UGA Men’s Glee Club back in 1955 that UGA has posted online. Check it out and read about the history of the Redcoats.

This UGA team has the most raw talent we’ve had in Athens in a long time. One concern is that a lot of kids who will be counted on have little to no game experience. You can’t simulate real game experience through practice…you have to actually play in a game to acquire it.We have at least 7-8 kids expected to get some heavy rotation this year …getting their 1st taste of action on Sept 3.

The only thing I know for sure about the upcoming season in the SEC is that it’s going to be a close race in the East and the West. USC, UGA and UF all have the ability to win the East while UT has a chance to play spolier for each. UA, LSU and Arky all have the ability to win the West while MSU has the ability to play spoiler on that side.
Should be a heckuva year!

other than we have 1/4 the number of fans than the dogs do. is that so hard to understand?

most folks are fans of schools they can relate to. most uga fans dont graduate high school let along college. so why would the be fans of a school that their kids could never possibly attend. ever!

if their kid did finish high school then they have a shot at going to uga and taking pe or pig farming or any number of attainable degrees for those students with iq’s south of 100. this pretty much explains the recruiting dominance by uga as well. not too many of their players are going to be rocket scientists or anything of that ilk.

at the end of the day when you look at uga players and fans you expect them to be able to say “would you care for fries with your hamburger sir?”

I put the least amount of stock in this pre season pick.

1) It’s done by 2 people, lots of sampling error/bias
2) It puts great emphasis on top 5 players, who cares if your kicker & punter are top 5, doesn’t win game sin the SEC. Last 5 SEC leaders have not had the best kicker or punter.
3) We already knew Richt had great athletes, he just can’t coach them up, hence the 6-7 season without playing LSU or Bama in 2010.

While we hope that young Mr. Crowell will have an impact this year and that Caleb will keep his nose clean and have his best year yet…but does anybody have any info on the kid who I’ll predict will become ‘The Camilla Comet’ – Justin Scott-Wesley? I mean the young man has speed – won the State 100 and 200 meter dashes and has 4.4 speed in the 40 – and according to some in the know can both avoid and break tackles. My question is ‘can he be effective at running back and is it likely that he’ll be given a ‘look-see’ there? Sure we can use the speed at WR, but at 6′1″ and between 210 and 220, seems to me he could be a running back in the mold of you-know-who.

If those at UGA take pig farming and none of us UGA fans graduated from high school or college, please enlighten us further. My guess is GT players take up bee hive engineering 101 or the mastery of loss management engineering or something really useful. At any rate whatever your very clever answer might be, the fact remains UGA will continue to wipe their “trailer trodden” feet on GT’s brow anytime the two schools play. We realize you must be under quite some stress having a very poor excuse for a football program. Maybe if you folks took pig farming and lived in trailers you might improve. @rimout: can you be specific about the forms of bias and types of sampling errors you see? I don’t actually see any sampling at all– since the position means were drawn from the entire population of players rather than a sample of them, the possibility for sampling error doesn’t even arise. Sampling error isnt a problem if you have population data.

Also, Murray ain’t the best QB in the SEC, Mettenberger, LSU’s back up, beat him like a drum head to head when both competed over Spring. Garcia is a better big game QB than Murray, wins against Bama, UGA, Florida in same year.

Tight end? Big deal, Georgia throws 2 passes a game to Charles, they waste him, may as well not be on the field.

LSU’s Sports Information Department has published a compilation of 18 preseason polls. The results:

2. Alabama
3. LSU
12. Arkansas
13. South Carolina
19. Miss St
20. Auburn
21. Florida
24. Georgia

Based on this Alabama is the favorite in the West while South Carolina is the favorite in the East. That said neither one is a clear cut favorite as I think LSU, Arkansas, Florida and Georgia could win their divisions.

8 SEC teams in the top 24 and 5 West teams in the top 20. It’s going to be an exciting year in the SEC.

No big deal. To answer your question, I see both UGA and UF at about 8-4 and battling it out for second place in the East. How bad is the SEC East supposed to be this year if a Richt-coached Georgia team coming off a losing season is expected to come out on top? Not exactly a vote of confidence for Will Muschamp. You almost have to assume a Florida win over Georgia, so the experts must think that Florida will struggle enough in conference play for Georgia to end up on top alone, no tie. Interesting.

An earlier poster said that “most UGA fans don’t finish high school.” I don’t buy that. Projections for the entire state of Georgia are for at least a 64% graduation rate.

I did some research, and here is what I found. Sonny Perdue set a goal for the state after the 2002-2003 graduation rate was 63.3%. The goal was to attain 80% by 2009-1010. It was achieved, but there is a catch: the standards are changing. Here is a March 2011 quote from the Georgia Superintendent of Schools:

“State schools Superintendent John Barge last month warned educators to expect as much as a 16 percent drop in the graduation rate because of the new rule.

“Barge said worst-case scenario projections indicate Georgia’s graduation rate could drop from about 80 percent to 64 percent.”

That’s from the Jacksonville Times, for the SE Georgia market.

An awful lot of optimisim(just as it is on here every single year)for UGA. I guess if Bill King, Mark Bradley, and others had been less high on UGA the last couple of years they would’ve lost their jobs. A couple of observations here: Murray looked great against sub par competition, but was winless against teams with winning records, and UGA looks very thin on the OL(both starters and depth) to me. I see Murray taking lots of hits against the better teams again this season. We will see how it all shakes out, but UGA has way too many question marks to just expect all of the wrongs from 2009 and 2010 to all of a sudden become righted. Some of these “it’s gonna be a great year to be a dawg”, and “two losses at the most” types of comments are pretty darn unrealistic. If UGA were to lose 4 or possibly even 5 games this season, it should be a shock to only a die hard and unrealistic dawg fan.

Attention, everyone, especially dawgtards. We will now observe a moment of silence in memory of Saint Jan Kemp, who exposed the shameful practices at UGA that were initiated and carried out by slimeball Vince Dooley. Dooley’s image as a coach and a nice guy were forever shattered during the trial, not to mention the one million dollars that dawgtards had to pay Saint Jan. These practices of recruiting morons and coddling them for four years, them tossing them out like garbage, are still going on, but at least the world knows what’s happening in Athens now.

I like the dawgs’ chances this year in the SEC East. UF is in transition with a new coaching staff and SC has a question mark at QB not to mention they have to come to Athens this year. UGA will not likely be dominant but should have enough to slip into the SEC championship.

By the BSU game time, as in every other year before, the puppy lovers will be out there with their chest bowed up and holding up that number one finger before the kickoff. By midseason, as always, they’ll have at least two losses and calling for Saint Mark’s head. Amen, except for the glaring completely illogical parts. Georgia is picked to have a good team something like, oh every year. most often they do, so scratch that theory. The player form thier opinions on how good they are in practise, Not by reading fan interpretation of media reports, so scratch that part. I don’t know who you talk to but all the Bulldog friends of mine always talk rational expectations, maybe you need to hang with less chest thumping idiots. Not that it matters what smack anyone talks, it has not bearing on the games. UGA was not picked to win the National championship, they were preseason ranked, categorized based on the information availible in the summer by a few percentage point over about 5 other teams, AND the overwhelming majority of Dawg fans were very aware of the statistically improbability over going #1 wire to wire. Again, you might want to consider hanging with some smarter people if they were already braging about winning a NC in August. And Georgia did Not play awful all year, they finished as one of the better team in the nation, and you cannot name a team that has ever played better with less healthy roster if you had 10 years to research it. And once we did win a few games , why then would we then start worrying about preseason rankings. That doesn’t even make sense. But BuLLdawg liked it.

So, what if UGA does not win the SEC East? At what point do the UGA fans demand a change in coaches? Perennial top-10 recruiting classes should not deliver 6 – 7 seasons. Of all the rivals, UGA has the most stability in coaching and steady stream of blue chip talent. The BCS trophies are at several SEC schools – - Florida, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, LSU – - but not at UGA. Will the UGA faithful continue to accept that?

Here are the hard facts confronting Mark Richt:
He is faced with equaling his first two or three or four years in Athens as UGA HC.He has to get back there THIS YEAR. It is the way that it is and all know it.

Short of a 9-3 campaign in which UGA loses to say Boise State and to AU and maybe to Ole Miss, then wins all of the East, or maybe they lose to Boise and Florida only, then SC and Florida beat up each other and they both lose another ……………..UGA could win the East, at 9-3. This would keep him around by making a trip to the Dome with a shot vs West Champ. Holding on barely this 9-3 scenario would be.

He must replicate his early UGA success …………. the alumni have had enough of pres season prognosticating, only to come up short, after a summer of DUIs, parked car side swiping, no driver’s licenses and or the usual monkey business.

Murray is the key. Until Murray wins a game that matters, and starts showing up against Div rivals the way Garcia did last year against UGA & Fla, UGA will struggle. Until Murray starts scoring points against winning teams, not the 18 points a game last year, but more in the range of 35-40 points a gamer against winning teams, Boise, South Carolina, Auburn, Florida, Missisippi State, these 5 games, and Murray’s play more than anyone on the team, are the key to the season. If the offense continues to score an SEC 10th best 18 points a game against winning teams, it will be a 4 or 5 win season, because their are 7 good teams on the schedule Boise, South Carolina, Auburn, Florida, Missisippi State, Tennessee, and Georgia Tech.

There are 5 great teams on the schedule:
Boise, South Carolina, Auburn, Florida, and Missisppi State

Note: Richt went 0-6 against winning teams in 2010, 2-9 against ranked teams since 2009. South Carolina & Florida are the 2 most important games of the season. Boise is a non-conference game.

Prediction: 2-3, with wins against Boise, South Carolina, and losses to Florida, Auburn, and Missisippi State.

There are 3 good teams on the schedule:
Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and Kentucky

Note: Richt won all 3 of these last year, due to a 5 td performance against Kentucky, and a great game by Murray against Georgia Tech & Tennessee. In UGA-Tenn game, last 4 winners were at home, home team is 4-0 in last 4 meetings, this one is in Knoxville.

Prediction: 2-1, with loss to Tenn.

There are 4 bad teams on the schedule:
Coastal Carolina, New Mexico State, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt

Note: Richt went 6-1 against losing teams, losing to Colorado without key WR, and with a red zone fumble by Caleb King

Prediction: 4-0, potential upsets are Ole Miss & Vanderbilt.

from scout.com this morning…Short-Term Thinking, and a Culture That Lacks Discipline
Follow me on Twitter @RussMitchellCFB

By all accounts, University of Georgia head football coach Mark Richt is a charismatic, pleasant, trusting fellow. A generous man willing to spend what little free time he has on many a noble cause.

He’s just done a poor job stewarding Georgia’s football program, and it’s time for a change.

On the field, the Bulldogs are a mess. Georgia football has failed to live up to expectations in four of the past five seasons.

Last season goes without analyzing – as painfully fresh as it still is. The season before UGA had about seven different halfbacks lead the team in rushing in a single game, had a secondary that gave up more than Anthony Weiner, and pretty much surrendered the forward pass at the season’s mid-point.

As for the much heralded 2008 season, in which the Dawgs were nearly everybody’s preseason #1, Richt’s squad played only three games against teams that finished the regular season in the Top 25 – and lost all three of them. Actually it was worse than that – they gave up a staggering 135 points in those three defeats.

So much for Bulldog pride.

You can’t argue there hasn’t been talent, either – Georgia has had a boat load of top flight recruiting classes over that span. So what is it then? Why was Richt so successful in his first five years, particularly when compared to everything since?

To answer that one must step off the football field. Discipline is a top down trait; it doesn’t work its way up from the bottom. During the past three to four years it seems nary a month has gone by without some Georgia football player splashing the headlines with a transgression or two (yes, we’ll circle around to Urban Meyer). This highlights a lack of leadership – or the right kind of leadership – at the head coaching level, which filters down to the players and, for that matter, the staff. Don’t think so?

When was the last time this many transgressions happened at Penn State? How about under Mack Brown? Or Nick Saban? Or Les Miles? The latter two illustrating it is possible to have different coaching styles and still not tolerate this lack of discipline. Hell, you can eat grass and still carry the absolute respect of your players.

You think Richt’s players respect him absolutely? If they do, they certainly have a funny way of showing it.

Before the start of the 2008 season, Miles fired his meal ticket in the form of fourth year junior, SEC Championship MVP, starting quarterback Ryan Perrilloux…plummeting the Tigers into a nuclear winter of a quarterback wasteland for two years. In the process, nearly costing Miles his job. But there wasn’t a player on that team who didn’t respect him for it. And there’s not a player at LSU today who joined after Perrilloux was booted that doesn’t live with the positive effects of that decision.

Flash to Richt. It starts with wantonly breaking the rules on the field – ordering (wink wink) players to collectively break the rules. Specifically, the infamous “End Zone Party” of 2007. Like many at the time, I thought it was harmless – and perhaps in isolation, at a different program, it still might be.

But that was before it had become apparent Georgia is a rudderless ship from a discipline perspective. The aforementioned coaches would never have condoned, let alone organized, such in-game behavior…and their players know it! They carry themselves on and off the field with that knowledge. That restraint. And it is this which is lacking in Athens.

Not to say other schools are perfect. We’re talking about herding 85 young men here – there will be mistakes. But nowhere near the volume of those under Richt’s “leadership”.

Some of you are thinking about Florida right now, and the 30+ players arrested during Meyer’s tenure. Don’t kid yourself – that was catching up to Urban too. Meyer also had more overall talent during those years than Richt, not to mention perhaps the greatest leader in CFB history in Tim Tebow. Without Tebow to control the locker room, Meyer started losing his team last season even with more talent on the bench than most coaches have in a starting roster.

Richt runs a loose ship, often focusing on unimportant things like fashion rather than discipline. Perhaps he has wanted to give players more responsibility – to help them grow as men by taking charge of themselves. Regardless, he has permitted coaches and players to make significant blunders that go virtually unpunished. He’s trying to change that here towards the end of his career at Georgia, but it’s too little, too late.

Take defensive coordinator Todd Grantham choking his throat at Florida kicker Chas Henry, and barely getting a slap on the wrist. THAT ECHOS! Can you imagine Jo Pa letting that go without some form of material punishment? You think for a minute that impressionable young men don’t notice that – don’t notice that their coach allows egregious behavior to go unpunished? And that’s just a single example.

Steve Spurrier is doing it right now with Stephen Garcia and his fifth suspension. It’s short-term thinking…and it spreads like cancer. Short-term thinking like Jimmy Johnson’s at Miami. Pete Carroll’s at USC. Butch Davis’ at Miami. And yes, Meyer’s at Florida. None of them lasted a decade. Richt? Just finished his 10th year.

There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with short-term thinking – the problem is that Richt apparently wants to be in it for the long haul.

Lack of discipline/respect leads to half-assed behavior off the field. It leads to half-assed behavior in practice and weight training, which in turn leads to injuries and mistakes on the field. It leads to a careless disrespect for authority, not to mention structure and restraint.

Even if Richt could suddenly change his coaching style, he cannot undue this culture he has nurtured over years. And one winning season won’t change that; it’s just a Band-Aid atop a wound. One winning season has as much to do with luck, schedules, experienced players and what’s happening at other programs. Winning consistently requires a solid core of discipline/respect which is lacking at Georgia.

Georgia football will never win a national championship with Richt as its head coach, let alone achieve consistent top-shelf performance. That short-term window has closed. It’s time for a change.

Offense scoring against winning teams is down from 35+ with Stafford in 07′, to 20 with Cox in 09′, and just 16 with Murray in 10′. UGA didn’t score a TD on UCF, South Carolina, and only scored 1 td against Miss St, a meaningless td at the end of the game. The offense has fallen apart and is down 20+ points a game against winning teams from 07′. SEC Champs are all up around 40 points a game against winning teams.

When South Carolina finishes #2 in offen scoring, even playing teams like Alabama, and UGA finishes 10th in offen scoring against winning teams, with a light schedule, and 2 future NFL guys playng WR in Green & Durham, you are in critical trouble.

The def scoring against winning teams was 12th in 09, but improved to 6th in 10′. Grantham had an easy schedule in 2010, but still has the def scoring heading in the right direction.

The offen scoring against winning teams dropped from 2nd in 07, to 10th in 2010. Bobo & Richt simply have no clue how to score on winning teams. Can’t run the ball, 10th there too. Can’t score td’s in the red zone.

Offen wins Championships now in the SEC. Scoring against winning teams needs to be up around 35 a game to win the SEC, 17 a game gets you 6-7.

With AJ & Durham & Ealey gone, top 3 scorers, you have no proven scorers at WR or RB. Murray will need to improve by leaps to even get to 8 wins.

“What was so wrong with 2008 anyway?”

SouthGaDawg88, the blowout losses to Alabama and Florida, and Tech’s comeback win from a 16-point deficit, in Athens. I don’t care what the final W-L record was, no season that featured two humiliating beatdowns from the only two really good teams we played, plus a loss to an in-state rival (where it appeared the defense quit in the 2nd half) could EVER be considered a success. Especially with a backfield that featured two NFL first-rounders.

That was the first clue that Richt didn’t know what he was doing. Maybe the Endzone Stomp the year before and the sudden fascination with fashion was actually the first clue that he was losing his grip.

Take away Green, Pollack, and Van Gorder, and Richt gets exposed. If you give him credit for the early years, then you have to give him the blame for the later years. No Georgia fan should be proud of the product that’s been put out since the end of the ‘05 season.

The Pro Style offense is built on balance. So if your WR or RB is out, you’re done (UGA went 1-3 without AJ Green). Or if you get behind, you will lose the game (Richt lost all 7 games where the other team scored 1st). It’s a short passing offense game, accuracy is key, yet Murray is among the least accurate against winning teams (Murray is ranked 55% accuracy against winning teams, 10th in SEC). You also have to be able to stretch the field with long passes, Murray had 1/2 as many long passes as Mallet, and a lot less than Garcia, Murray’s accuracy drops significantly outside of 5 yard passes. Guys like Kellen Moore are 60%+ accurate on 15+ throws.

Fresh qb takes time to get use to college ball. Most early games are low scoring for all teams. We dont have to replace AJ. We already proved we can do that. We did that very effectively with Durham, who was by no means anywhere close to a All-SEC caiber WR. He ws a gritty guy with pretty sticky hands, but he never possessed AJ’s skills at playing the ball in the air. He was the main target for just standing in AJ’s shoes, but he was never a star on his own, and still the passing game was good enough. SO all we have to do is replace a Durham, which we have done year after year.

By the way, if we include the Safety position, Boise State also has this guy with a preseason AA tribute:

S George Iloka 3L 6-3 216 (63 T, 3 TFL, 2 INT) tackles for loss, 27 consecutive starts.
Iloka is Preseason AA – 2nd Team Athlon.

Nate Potter has since been selected 1st Team AA OT by Athlon, Sporting News and Lindy’s, along with Phil Steele.

I laugh at some of your post of about how impossible you make it sound that Georgia will not be good just because they lost A.J. Georgia played in 3 SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS the past 10 years without A.J. I assure you it can be done again this season. I am not even worried about the offense because they have plenty of good players on that side of the ball to score plenty enough to win games. I guarantee everyone that there will be a player or two that will step up on offense. Ive seen players look totally different from one season to the next. Kwame Geathers is a perfect example on the defensive side of the ball in spring practice. There will be more players like geathers that will step up this year. The most important part to a winning championship caliber team is defense and Georgia will be very solid in that area this year and I wouldnt be surprised if they were one of the best in the nation with jenkins and jarvis jones coming in to add on to what we already have.

Ugakev,

Having a good defense in practice is all fine and dandy, but you have to remember its just spring. Geathers very well could be a great interior guy, but without the LBs (which should be very good) and the DBs (which are VERY questionable), it won’t matter. Besides, we both know that UGA’s OL have been underachieving for the past 2-3 years.

It’ll be an interesting summer when the pads start hittin the ground. That’s when you’ll find out how good some teams are. But for right now, I’ll pick Boise State to have a great game over the Bulldogs.

Luke you have it backwards….You can have all world LB’s and DB’s but if your DT’s and DE’s are weak it brings down the entire defense. They are the most important players on the D.If your DT’s are wrecking havoc there won’t be extra blockers coming after your LB’s.They will be forced to double team the big boys.If your DE’s are pressuring the QB he won’t have time to go through all his reads…I don’t care if your entire secondary are ALL Americans at every position…any decent QB when given time to throw is going to pick you apart. It all starts up front.

SOUTHGADAWG88 – Technically, that is a description of the 4-3 rather than the 3-4. The 3-4 DT almost always gets double-teamed. The 3-4 DE’s typically aren’t pressuring the QB, they are occupying blockers to free up the playmakers, the LBs. One of the OLBs may play down and pressure the QB, or pressure may come from a CB blitz or S blitz.

I know that Delbert,,,what I was talking about was DT’s and DE’s not the scheme. For the record though some 3-4 DE’s are pass rushers like the Bama kid from last year.To me those guys are all DT’s the NG is just a big one.It takes some getting used to for me to call our former DE’s OLB’s.I still look at the personnel that way…I see 3 DT’s and 2 DE’s and 2 LB’s out there.Which is not correct I know

1) No real OC Coach

5) Scheduling Boise for opener instead of Louisville

SOUTHGADAWG88 – Yes, and it’s situational, as well. From the pro perspective, where they have to make their money count, it’s cheaper to find big guys to fit a 3-4 DE scheme than a 4-3 DE scheme with exceptional athletes. Linebackers (like Justin Houston, as a recent example) are more available than 4-3 sackmaster DEs (the Falcons have 1, and they really need 2). The 3-4 is about 50% of the NFL teams now, and some predict that it will be 75% in 5 years. The Bears, and one other team that escapes me at the moment are the only teams that have not used a 3-4 in their history.

I played in an era where the Oklahoma 5-4 was used (by my school), along with wide-tackle and tight-tackle 6 formations. Those days are long gone, but I still like to study the stuff. What we did then is considered very illegal now. My first move responsibility as a stand-up DE was to apply a two handed open hand smash at the snap to the offensive end’s helmet to “disorient” him (a concussion would be ideal). Fortunately, football is constantly evolving.

Delbert you are not a youngster I see lol.If both of those big boys have the stamina to stay on the field in 3rd down situations this could be a special Defense. It would give Grantham a lot of flexibility.A 350 350 300 pound front 3 sounds great to me.I can imagine seeing it against SC and MSU for sure.

SOUTHGADAWG88 – Yeah, definitely not a youngster. I played against a single-wing team my junior year in high school. UCLA was still running it with Billy Kilmer for UCLA at the college level.

Unless it’s 3rd and short, (depending on the game situation, of course) I’d be surprised if Geathers or Jenkins is on the field. Have to wait until summer practice to see how the conditioning is going. Maybe one of ‘em will slim down to 315 or so.

Roller,

First off– you stated “Also, Murray ain’t the best QB in the SEC, Mettenberger, LSU’s back up, beat him like a drum head to head when both competed over Spring.”

That is not true as it was Murray that beat Mettenberger out, Mettenberger was going to get playing time as the 1st back-up but then went out and got himself in trouble- and got kicked off the team and out of school.

And now to GFan- you stated “UGA has never won an SEC Championship with an out of state quarterback as the starter.” That also is not true- our first two SEC Championships 1942 and 1946, with 1942 being a MNC and 1942 Heisman trophy winner was not from Georgia I believe.

There were a lot of things for the dawgs to celebrate last year. Let’s see…

1. A drunken, whoring athletic director with red panties in his lap.

2. Twelve players arrested. And 41% of UGA football players are arrested during their time at UGA.

3. A player suspended for violating NCAA rules.

4. Winning the Fulmer Cup for the most players arrested.

5. Winning the title of #1 party school (i.e., the most drunken student body in the USA).

6. A sleazy assistant coach who razzes opposing players, unethical coaching conduct in violation of NCAA rules.

7. A super sleazy head coach who thinks he’s a saint, but recruits thug wannabes, gangbangers, and illiterate morons.

8. A 6-7 record despite having a team full of 4- and 5-star recruits.

That’s really something to be proud of!

Irregardless of fans from other schools interjecting their thoughts regarding this subject matter, it seems to me to be a pretty simple affair. Despite having some difficulties and shortcomings the past several seasons, several tabloids project UGA will have a solid year. eYe would rather fly under the radar but in honesty there should already be enough reason(s) for this staff and team to be focused and ready to compete. The fact that several publications have us on the frontline should not distract from the fact this team and it’s fanbase is hungry for success. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out but there is some reasoning that outside minds and sources feel UGA is apparently capable of winning numerous games this year. Logic to me says if we are mentally and physically devoted each then there is a pretty fair chance of success. The season starts with a high interest game followed by a strong SEC matchup. That alone should have Richt and squad focused and ready. The flip side is if we haven’t truly fostered the effort and determination required to present ourselves as contenders then it could probably be another rather long season. eYe have no way, nor do most fans,of knowing much more than what I read and try to use that as a thermometer or gauge on what is transpiring. So far eYe would have to consider that if Richt has seen the daylight and has done his duty then we will be ready. Most teams in this conference division and several in the other are no different than UGA in having concerns and potential question marks. Guess that is one reason they play the games to clear it up. Lots of variables impact teams and for a team to win 10 or more games requires alot more than just plain skill.

It is a very simple affair. Scoring a few more points is not hard to imagine with a second year starter ALL-SEC QB. Holding down a few more points is not hard to imagine, I would say assumed, with a reasonably talented, more experienced defense playing at full speed all year.

Anyone predicting a worse or equal year would have to be concerned about new issues, which obviously are possible. (although I haven’t heard that argument put out there) But if low expectations are based on the realities and factors from last year, it’s simple not a logical conclusion.

Yo doggs-
The ESPN analysis didn’t weigh in the most critical factor into their model: COACHING. Unfortunately, even though we have impressive talent, we have lousy coaching. That means that this talent isn’t coached up, and that there is little or no discipline, and that the game plan and strategy on which the plays get called is fatally flawed. Without the leadership of quality coaching, the best talent in the country will be mediocre at best as a team. But wait, it gets better…
Did you know that your university is paying Mark Richt over three million dollars a year so that he can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory? Yep… That’s $100 per student per year for every single student at UGA in Athens.

The NT and DE’s in a 3-4 defense do more than just occupy blockers with the LB’s getting most of the tackles and sacks. If your DE and NT are double blocked, the RB holes are kind of narrowed down just a bit. Can’t make a hole, if you are occupied, doubling one guy. It is also good to remember where that NT will be lining up most of the time. A center knowing he has a 360 pound man that can move fast and is strong, makes his job that much tougher. He has to make a good snap and instantly be in front of a freight train and hope his guard can help out in a split second. Then the runner is forced to the outside where the LB’s should meet him. Since he has been moving laterally, instead of straight ahead, he is not at full speed so he better be tough and put his head down and be able to shake off the LB. There are a few RB’s in the SEC that can do that, but only a few. Lattimore and Richardson come to mind, but not too much after that. The D coach, will be well aware that the LB’s will have to be aggressive so they can double team on tackles as well. The 3-4 defense is one that is simple to execute if you have the right personnel on the field. I think UGA has the personnel, and I think they will be coached up enough, to be very effective.
If the UGA offense can control the rhythm of the game and play ball control, the defense will be able to hold up their end of the bargain. It could be a good year.

I hope they can get a resolution pretty quick, but I would almost bet Jones doesn’t see the field for the first few games at least. Not sure what they will do about the BB freshman, since he wasn’t signed to any team at the time. Jones, evidentially was on the USC roster, so the SEC Kiflin curse exist once again, LOL. I am pretty sure that Jones would have known it was not the thing to do, but it could be a hard lesson for him to learn. It just appears that UGA is snake bitten this year.
