UGA or Tech? It’s no contest, really

classic uga logoESPN’s SEC and ACC bloggers had an interesting exchange this week in which they argued the relative merits of UGA and Georgia Tech.

The discussion was prompted by a reader named Tom in Denver who is moving to Atlanta and wanted to be sold on which school he should root for in place of Colorado.

ACC blogger Heather Dinich had the unenviable task of making the case for the Yellow Jackets, and she mainly concentrated on similarities between Tech and CU, like both teams wearing gold and sharing the 1990 national championship, which she noted “is 10 years more recent than the last time the Bulldogs won a national crown.”

Ouch. That’s about the only blow she landed, however.

As for Tech football, her backhanded sales pitch was that “it’s not a bad product on the field. Georgia Tech has played in 14 consecutive bowl games. It’s been 17 years since the Yellow Jackets had a losing record in conference play. And personally, I like Paul Johnson’s offense. It’s unique, it was the best rushing team in the nation last year, and defenses never know when they’re going to get hit with a play of over 20 yards.”

SEC blogger Edward Aschoff made a much more convincing case, but then he had a lot more to work with.

Among the reasons he cited that Tom should switch his allegiance to the Dawgs and not the Jackets was that this year’s team “has the ability to not only win the SEC East but could be a BCS buster for the team that comes out of the West. Following the Bulldogs this year won’t lack excitement, especially with the SEC’s best quarterback in Aaron Murray running the show.”

Also mentioned: SEC coaching dean Mark Richt being “a classy guy,” Uga being “one of the most popular mascots in all of sports,” a rich tradition, playing a game “Between the Hedges,” the annual trip to Jacksonville and “Finally, I think it says everything about the two programs when Bulldogs fans buy Georgia Tech’s season tickets just to get a seat for the Georgia game.”

Good job, Edward. Those are some pretty good reasons to be a Bulldog fan.

But there are many more. In fact, a couple of years ago I wrote a series of blogs listing many of them. So here, in no particular order and compiled together for the first time, are 101 Reasons to be a UGA fan:

1. “It’s Saturday in Athens!”

2. Uga and all his predecessors. The most recognizable — and, as Sports Illustrated said, the best — college mascot in America.

3. “The ball ain’t heavy.”

4. Erk’s bleeding forehead.

5. The Arch.

6. “There goes Herschel.”

7. The most beautiful stadium in college football.

9. Hines Ward.

10. Silver britches.

12. Ringing the Chapel bell after a victory.

I told you Bill. TROLL central

Tech people predicting a GT win is like us predicting we will beat Florida. Both should never be said.

Outsider, UGA has 5 recognized National Titles and multiple SEC titles which is the real thing won on the field and frankly all I care about. The BCS is a beauty contest not won on the field.

DpDog, Tech couldn’t even beat UGA last year when they were at their worst. CPJ is not a better coach. He’s a better coach for high school cause he uses a gay high school offense that isn’t hard to figure out. Tech has no pass game, they only have a run game. Season 2 in Granthams 3-4. Uga has Geathers and John Jenkins and both will be stuffing the FB in the high school offense this season so all tech will be able to do is run to the outside which won’t work well because Uga has the most athletic LB backfield in the nation. Plus the fastest LBs. 9-1. Going to be 10-1. Tech sucks

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last five BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. During that period, UGA did not even win its SEC division.

5. Red panties.

In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.

You people that do not think that there are good looking girls at Georgia Tech are idiots. There are plenty of good looking girls at Tech. There are also a fair amount of 200 pounders dressed in goth garb strolling around Athens.

Georgia Tech has a more prestigious football history than Georgia. Pick up a book and read it. Tech is also a more prestigious school, by far.

There is nothing better than a night game at Bobby Dodd. Bright lights, big city.

Hey, Bill why don’t you DAWGS FANS give yourselves on the back. Everybody in the state loves UGA, and its no secret, so quit acting like you need to prove it. TECH is never gonna have as many fans as UGA (Harder & Smaller School). I got to admit though, don’t you get sick of hearing the same “we might win a national championship this year crap” and never doing it. Bottom line UGA is a underachieving football year after year with supreme talent. Georgia Tech, with the considerably less talent, and maybe three or four guys that could make UGA’s roster, constantly over acheives year in and year out, with last year being an exeption. For the objective fan coming to Alanta, wouldn’t you much rather cheer for a team that maximizes their God given ability rather than squandering it. Hey Bill, put that in your pipe an smoke it.

The number one reason for “Tom in Denver” to root for UGA is because he will fit right in with the rest of the homers whose allegiance is strictly based on where they live.

Reason #2 is that he is used to rooting for a mediocre, irrelevant school. He will feel right at home!

In the regards to Tech: I think this season will go a long way in terms of gauging what kind of coach Paul Johnson truly is. His team overachieved a bit in 2008 going to the Chick-fil-A and upsetting a UGA team that quite frankly mailed in during the second half of that game. Many UGA fans will call that win a fluke but I won’t, Tech wanted it more that day and deserved to win.

In 2009, Tech had a pretty good team, but lost games due to a lack of talent on defense( except for maybe Derrick Morgan). They were looking past the Dawgs to the ACC Championship, and got what they deserved with that 30-24 loss.

In 2010, Tech lost their playmakers from the year before on offense, while the defense got worse after losing Morgan. Losing Nesbitt was the nail in the coffin for them last season. So it will be interesting to see if Tech can rebound this year. Johnson’s offense CAN work IF it has the right parts( in 2009 it did, in 2010 it didn’t). I also think Paul Johnson is a guy who is hungry and wants to win. But if he doesn’t have the horses it won’t matter. Chan Gailey was a lousy head coach that squandered NFL talent. Johnson is a good head coach: but if he isn’t able to recruit better talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball, it could lead to his undoing at Tech.

As a Bulldog fan, I say we take the “red panties” line that Tech fans like to throw out as an insult and put it on our “101 Reasons to be a UGA fan” list. Who else but a Techie would think anything bad about red panties? If you don’t have a few fond red panties memories of your own, you’re either still a kid or you’re spending too much time in your mother’s basement. (Even the women among us would agree, I’m sure.)

You’ll notice that you never see Auburn, Alabama, Florida, etc. fans using “red panties” as an insult. Those fans may wear different colors on the outside, but they can all share an appreciation for red panties on the inside.

The former AD being arrested for DUI is a bad thing. If he was cheating on his wife, that’s a bad thing too. Those two mistakes cost a man his job and his dignity, and rightfully so. But if you’re not driving drunk or cheating on your wife, having your female passenger give you her red panties to hold onto is never an insult. It’s one of the top 101 reasons to be…whatever you happen to be.

If you like barking a lot or you are frequently inebriated before noon or you can’t be bothered with finding a trash can or a urinal or if your second favorite sport is nascar, then UGA is the better choice.

If you like real student-athletes, classy and educated fans, chants with real words in them, many years of tradition, and some possibility of winning a conference title then GT is the better choice.

Both have their pros and cons.

To whom it may concern:

As the old adage goes, what do you call attractive girls at Georgia Tech? Visitors. Caucasian ladies at Georgia Tech are few and far between. My own uncle (who obtained both his Bachelor’s and Master’s from Tech) used to go to Athens to find women. Obviously, there’s not much to choose from at Tech (You could always try Agnes Scott — Heard there’s some winners there!). Furthermore, its apparent that many Trolls on here haven’t actually looked up UGA’s Greeklife. 90% of Greek ladies at UGA are dimes. What’s Georgia Tech got?

Now that I’ve gotten off my soapbox of attractive, Southern ladies, back to the original argument which is quite simple. Look at the stadiums on game day. Sanford is always sold out. Look at the conferences. The ACC is like the Big 10… a bunch of cupcakes. SEC produces Heisman winners, national champions, and all out to be at the top. Its the only conference where you can have one loss and still go to the National Championship. Pac 10, ACC, Big 12, or Big 10… one loss and you are done.

Finally, Georgia Tech fans are pretentious people by nature. UGA fan’s know what hospitality is and have never met a stranger. If you like the Dawgs, you’re a friend. Tech’s failure here is because most of their students and alumni are out of state.

If I’m going to hire someone to design a new type of toilet paper that wipes my butt better, he’s going to be from Tech. We all need nerds to develop the things that make like better (like TP or microwaves). If I’m going to hire someone to run my company (say like Aflac — Dan Amos, or Augusta National — Billy Payne, or how about the State of Georgia — Sonny Perdue [All UGA graduates if you didn't catch my drift]), I’m hiring a Georgia boy (or girl).

One last note: According to “The Public Ivies: America’s Flagship Universities” by Howard and Matthew Greene, UGA is considered one of the 30 Public Ivies. This was published in 2001. I will concede that Tech was one of the original runners up when the term was first coined in 1959, but were talking about now. UGA is in that list. Tech is not. I’m okay with being compared to an Ivy League school. Common comparisons are prestige, look and feel, appearance, age, and school traditions.

That should help you out. UGA is the way to go. You’ll make more friends that way, too, since you are new to the area. Tech fans in general are not the more likable bunch.

More facts that hurt. The team that Georgia has beaten the most in their football history is Georgia Tech. The team that Georgia Tech has lost to the most in their history is Georgia.

Pwn. Georgia Tech can lay claim to a share of four national titles, while Georgia can claim a share of five.

How many CWS titles does Tech have?

Georgia puts 45,000 people in one side of the stadium.

Easy Topic.

GT is on the rise & UGA is on the way down (over the next 5 years).

In general……..UGA fans are obnoxious and blinded by over-the-top bias.

In general……..GT fans are honest, less-than-obnoxious and realistic about the various sports.

GT has much better academic standards and the degree is more respected than a UGA degree.

GT is located in Atlanta & tickets are easier to obtain! (HA HA)

GT has stellar Golf, Baseball, & Lacrosse programs and the Football, Basketball, & Soccer programs have had several periods of great success.

The coaches at GT are generally honest, high character people with the proper overall focus on the student atheletes.

DRAD (atheletic director at GT) is one of the very best in the country!!

GT has more Football National Championships than UGA (GT has 4 and UGA only has 1)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! {FYI: without Herschel Walker, UGA would have zero national championships!). I sincerely hope I am correct about UGA only having 1 NC……..they might have 1 or 2 more from WAY WAY back when…….I am not absolutely sure.

THe FINAL football related reason: UGA always brings in players who are RATED higher than the GT players and the GT football team still gives UGA all they want each and every season……..in other words, GT is usually the underdog and when we win the football game, the UGA fans are absolutely devastated! I fully expect GT will win more that we lose against UGA over the next 10 seasons.

Still@theBAR,

I’m a Project Manager at a Fortune 500 company. I also recruit for the company serving as a guest lecturer for both UGA and Georgia Tech. We get the same amount of applicants from both schools, yet they always hire the UGA graduates. One reason: Tech graduates have no soft skills. They can’t interview. They are difficult to talk to. Don’t ask them to present. They can’t even talk to a small group. They will be stuck in a cube or lab as individual contributors which we all know does not lead to the title of “Boss.”

My son just completed orientation at UGA — he starts in the Fall. If Tom in Denver enjoys taking in the scenery at the games tell him UGA is 61% female, 39% male. By the way, my son will be working towards an engineering degree — that has to sting for the Tech people that UGA is going to start graduating engineers again (not since before WWII).

You obviously didn’t read about the Public Ivies in my post above. UGA is listed. Georgia Tech is not. Academic rigor on par with the Ivy League schools? Pretty sure that means UGA is top tier.

Plus, everyone knows a trade school can’t be considered an Ivy.

Assuming this is a serious question, I’d say the guy’s in a pretty good position…it just doesn’t matter – to him – who wins. I mean he can come to town…look around…check out the terrain…and, if he’s like me when I don’t have a ‘dog in a fight’, then I pull for the underdog (sorry for all the d-o-g references), but that too isn’t an iron-clad rule, more like a suggestion. Just enjoy the heat and humidity and about this time of year ask yourself, ‘What was I thinking when I decided to move?’

“UGA has 5 recognized National Titles” …No sir.

Georgia Football has been more relevant the past 10 years, they were also better in the 80s and obviously hold the overall series lead. Tech was more prominent in the 90s with the National Championship/Joe Hamilton/George Godsey Eras. The early part of the 20th century and the 50s belonged to Tech. Both schools have very significant traditions that any outsider would come to love. One ‘problem’ with Tech is that there are so many international students that just don’t care about football. The teams this coming year and this past year haven’t shown much promise and I’d say are on equal footing. Tech is better academically, but UGA is by no means the laughingstock most Tech fans try to display. It is definitely a top 5 academic school out of SEC teams. You really can’t go wrong at either one as far as academics go.

Two things that annoy this UGA Alumn:

1. People who have nothing to do with UGA but become bandwagon fans becuase its the cool thing to do. If you didn’t go to UGA or don’t have direct family members who did – go cheer for the Falcons or something. It dilutes the prestige of being a bulldog when all the random rednecks/GA southern students pretend like they have something to do with UGA.

2. GA Tech alumni who say UGA has poor academics. The smart UGA fans are alumni who have become doctors, lawyers, accountants, CEO’s. The dumb UGA fans that you meet are people who didn’t even go to school there. There is a big difference.

I’m hoping this was in jest, and you don’t actually think the Beatles wrote a song about UGA… The original lyrics were “Hey Bullfrog,” but they changed them while they were recording.

In that case, there may actually be a few other teams who could claim the same:

Blue Jay Way (Toronto Baseball)
Devil in Her Heart (New Jersey Hockey)
Piggies (Arkansas Football)
Three Cool Cats (LSU, Auburn, etc.)
Yer Blues (St. Louis Hockey)

Tom in Denver would never be able to see a game in Athens because they are all sold out.

My recommendation to Tom is to stay in Denver or better yet, move to Colorado Springs. Colorado is a beautiful state.

And there's the Jan Kemp thing...

June 23rd, 2011
3:17 pm

I wonder if any of the books about UGA football include the perspective of someone speaking for the late Jan Kemp? The perspective that “student” athletes like Lindsay Scott were playing years without taking college level courses? That the proudest moment of the football program was earned by players who never earned a single college credit?

Dawgtards love to return to 1980, but their memories are really short when it comes to remembering an earthshaking event that happened a few years later that showed the world what a joke UGA athletes were and what a scam artist their beloved Vince Dooley was (and is). So for all those dawgtards with short memories or who think their athletes are actually taking real courses and trying to graduate, here’s the quote that broke the trial wide open and showed what a slimeball Dooley is:

O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

Nothing has changed at UGA, they just do a slightly better job of keeping things quiet, but that’s hard to do when 45 of your player-thugs have been arrested in the past three years, isn’t it?

UGA: WINNER OF THE FULMER CUP AND THE CESSPOOL OF THE SOUTH.

I think he should be a Dawg fan because who else had the worst team to ever win a mythical national championship and only by the graces of their arch rival helping them get there other than the Dawgs. The Dawgs who have so arrogantly accomplished so very little in their football history need your support. Fact is, with out the Jackets they would be useless. They needed tech in 1980 and when Herschel won the Heisman it couldn’t have been his except for an ex Tech coach called Heisman.

To the Colorado fan moving to GA, what I would say is you can follow a UGA team that is a perennially mediocre (think Kentucky, Miss State, Tenn, Ole Miss) but plays in a great conference, or follow Ga Tech and see a team that has a realistic chance of winning a sorry conference. Either option isn’t great. If I were you, I’d order the CFB package and stick to cheering for the Buffalos.

When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on? And don’t forget the infamous red panties.

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Hey DawginLex,

You say “UGA has 5 recognized National Titles…” Really? What polls do you look at?

UGA likes to claim five titles, just like Alabama likes to claim thirteen. According to the two primary nationwide polls (AP and Coaches) UGA has one title since 1936, the same as GT.

Someone, please correct me if I’m wrong. That’s back when you could see the game from the bridge.

And the Tech fans need to just shut up, to wit: Sammy Drummond, Jack Washington, Kevin Salisbury, Mike Mooney, and Tico Brown. I think Mr. Salisbury is dead now, and I wish his spirit peace, but he and Mr. Mooney inflicted much damage upon a young woman’s face in a bar in Atlanta and they never sat out a game. I think Mr. Mooney started for four years. Imagine that in Athens. Hey, it’s okay at Tech.

Sammy Drummond, Jack Washington and Tico Brown were some of the basketball scholars of the seventies and they wouldn’t know calculus from toilet paper, but they are, indeed, a part Tech’s storied basketball history.

It Ain’t About Rocket Science,

Tech. Grads were not the only folks involved in the shuttle program. My boss over in Australia was a Air Force Academy graduate, (you do remember them from last year) and was an alternate in the program. We talked to some of the shuttle people while orbiting over there, and I was not a graduate of Tech. I was not a graduate of UGA either, but the point is, Tech. was far from being the only school involved in the shuttle program. They depended on us to keep them safe while in space from any solar activity that might have harmed them while in space. I don’t recall any Tech. grads involved with the astrophysics program that I worked with so that doesn’t hold a whole lot of water in my book. The gentleman moving from Colorado, if he was involved with the university there, probably knew about the space program there as well as the activity that went on at Boulder CO. so I doubt that will influence his decision as to whom to cheer for, come football season. Got to have a better reason than the soon to be defunct shuttle program, to determine football or school loyalty.

Left-Wing Bozos at Work on Our Kids' Minds

June 24th, 2011
1:30 pm

A repeat of a Neil Boortz column that shows what kind of crap our kids are learning at UGA under the school’s left-wing professors:

Well, I don’t want to embarrass the subject of our little story by using her real name. We’ll call her Prunella. Our heroine is a senior at the University of Georgia and a columnist for the Red and Black, the independent UGA student newspaper.

At the end of her most recent column, “Think before you shop at Walmart,” you will see this tag: “[Prunella] is a senior from Lawrenceville majoring in magazines and women’s studies.”

With such a double major I’m sure the recruiters are knocking down her door.

“Think before you shop at Walmart?” As a matter of fact I do! My thought process is usually something like, “I think I’ll go shopping at Walmart.”

Prunella disapproves. She says that when she walks into a Walmart she sees “concentrated evil.” Not just evil, mind you — concentrated evil!

Our magazine major’s problems with Walmart seem to stem from the fact that many local retailers find it difficult to compete when Walmart moves into town.

That’s the nature of the free market.

Prunella doesn’t explain how she would remedy the situation. Consumers exercising their free choices apparently don’t sit well with this young lady. She is also upset with Walmart because it is a “large unfeeling corporation with (a) major impact on what we buy, where it’s produced and how much we pay.” Please. Whoever it is out there forcing Prunella to shop at Walmart, knock it off.

Somehow, in her column about the “concentrated evil” that is Walmart, Prunella didn’t address the fact that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. donates just shy of $300 million a year to charities around the country. The company also reportedly pledged $2 billion for a five-year campaign to fight hunger. The evil must be concentrated somewhere other than in charitable giving.

Perhaps, then, this is Prunella’s real problem with Walmart. In her column she expresses displeasure that profit-driven corporations “are firing American workers to cut production costs. They then charge American consumers more money than what it took to produce their products.”

Let’s address both of her points. First: How dare any evil “profit-driven” corporation fire workers to cut production costs! Cutting production costs is nothing less than a blatant attempt to improve the bottom line. Don’t these dastardly businessmen realize that they’re in business to hire people, not to make money? After all, potential investors look to the number of unnecessary employees as a surer sign of corporate health than profit and loss figures. Any good woman’s studies major surely knows that!

Second: Let’s erect some gallows at Sanford Stadium so, at the next Georgia home game, we can hang the next evil businessmen we catch selling a product for more than it cost to produce. Prunella must have sneaked into the back of a UGA business class to learn that her next pair of shoes should be sold for exactly what it cost to make them and place them on the shelves of her favorite store (not Walmart) — and not one penny more.

Seriously, folks. Is this what we get after tens of thousands of dollars are spent to produce a college graduate these days? Did her magazine professor see this column before she submitted it to the Red and Black? Didn’t someone warn her that such public displays of economic brilliance can end up being embarrassing?

And the most troubling question of all: Is she registered to vote?

Snoop Dawg,

I am happily retired thank you. As for a job, when exactly do you work since you seem to be on here most times during the day. Must be a late shift in a fast food place. I guess that is why you are so over qualified as a coach in waiting and able to judge so well, a man making a lot more money than you will ever see, flipping burgers.

UGA 05- get a life. Oh never mind, if you really did graduate from UGA in 05 (wow), you don’t have a life because you are probably still living at home on mommy and daddy and looking for a real job. Tech has four NCs (1917, 1928, 1951, 1990). Before you say some of those are shared, well so is ALL of UGAs claims except 1980. 1990 is still 10 years more recent than 1980. I know that is tough math for a UGA grad, but count your toes if you need.

It ain’t rocket science, this Snoop Dawg is doing rocket science–in my second career… As for coaching, I do think just about any of the blawg dawgs could do a better job than da Preacha Man. And, after paying them a nice salary, we could give every student at UGA a hundred dollar rebate every year from the cost savings realized from cancelling’ Preacha Man’s cool 3 mil per year.
So, have fun with that metal detector in your golden years… I commend The Smartest Bulldog to you each morning. Check out the website…

btw, I recommend that the AJC replace Richt at number 99 with Soljah Boy and Water Girl at 101 with Sistah Soljah.

Haha Techies are so dumb. They have 3 claimed National Championships. 1917, 1928, and 1990. Uga has six claimed by different polls, 1927, 1942, 1946, 1966, 1968, and 1980.
————

Claiming the 1968 MNC??? UGA finished 8-1-2 in 1968 losing to Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl 16-2 (yes – UGA scored 2 points). Woody Hayes had his greatest team ever in 1968. They went 10 – 0 with an average score of 32-15.
Ohio State blew out Michigan 50-14 in their regular season finale before a 27-16 vitory in the Rose Bowl over USC (featuring a Heisman Trophy winning tailback named OJ Simpson).

Talk about a DDD – that would be Dumb, Delusional, Dawg

And have fun supporting a mediocre engineering school. btw UGA ‘05 is not when i graduated, it’s my favorite year as a bulldog fan, again nice try at being a smart ass, but it didn’t work too well. And sorry it took me to long to answer, but i actually have a life and don’t spend all day on a blog, espcially on another teams blog. loser.

UGA’05 really claims these???
Other National Championships
•1968 (8-1-2) – Litkenhous
•1966 (10-1-0) – Massey Ratings
•1946 (11-0-0) – Williamson System
•1942 (11-1-0) – Berryman; DeVold; Houlgate System; Litkenhous; Poling System; Williamson System.
•1927 (9-1-0) – Boand System; Poling System

—————————————————————————-
Some background on these polls:
Litkenhous (1934-84), a difference-by-score formula developed by Edward E. Litkenhous, a professor of chemical engineering at Vanderbilt, and his brother, Frank.

Massey College Football Ratings (1995-present), a mathematical rating system developed by Kenneth Massey, a graduate student at Virginia Tech in mathematics. His ratings, which account for homefield advantage, joined the BCS panel in 1999. More information can be found at http://www.masseyratings.com

Williamson System (1932-63), a power rating system chosen by Paul Williamson of New Orleans, Louisiana, a geologist and member of the Sugar Bowl committee .

Some mighty solid rankings there – 2 guys who nobody has never heard of (Litkenhous and Willaimson) and even claiming an MNC (in 1966 no less) from a rating system that didn’t exist at the time

Oops – forgot the 1927 MNC (the year UGA lost to GT in their last game). It was awarded by Boand and Poling – basically the opinions of 2 guys who didn’t watch a single game in 1927

Boand System (1930-60), known as the Azzi Ratem System developed by William Boand> of Tucson, Arizona. He moved to Chicago in 1932. Appeared in many newspapers as well as Illustrated Football Annual (1932-42) and weekly in Football News (1942-44, 1951-60). Predated national champions from 1919-29.
Poling System (1935-84), a mathematical rating system for college football teams developed by Richard Poling from Mansfield, Ohio, a former football player at Ohio Wesleyan. Poling’s football ratings were published annually in the Football Review Supplement and in various newspapers. Predated national champions from 1924-34.

Matt Blackwell, I have to differ with your no. 103 – the excessive celebration penalty in Jacksonville. That was bush league. And totally unnecessary. We had the better team that year, period. And the SEC officiating crews have been punishing Georgia football for it ever since.

Snoop Dawg,

So your first career was a rap singer right, LOL. It s suppose to be handle dude, not a fantasy. As for enjoying my golden years. I do tremendously, but not by using a metal detector. I have more keeping me busy now than I ever did when I got paid to work. At 62, the secret is really pretty simple. Keep busy and active and you don’t feel old. And of course, always cheer on UGA, and CMR. Oh yeah and one last thing. Marry a younger woman to keep you going as well. Easy formula for not getting older that way.

102. Tom from Denver, have you ever seen so many jealous losers that spend their time concocting insults on some other school’s message board? Seems to me that, if their schools were so great, they would be focused on celebrating their schools with their own fans instead of showcasing their obvious jealousy of the Red and Black for the whole world to see. Thank God I’m a Dawg!

And don't forget the red panties affair

You can list all the “pluses” you want to, but the athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches.

So your list of pluses really doesn’t impress anyone.

Hey Tom from Denver…..if you really want to know who to root for between UGA and Tech, just look at this and other Dawg blogs and see how much of an inferiority complex Tech and their small following (no sense in calling them fans. Simply not enough of them) have for anything and everything UGA. A team who gets championship rings simply for beating UGA for the first time in nearly a decade and only the 15th time in 50 years. So unless you like tickle piles and coaches who fake their resumes just so they can leave town, UGA is the school for you.
