UGA or Tech? It’s no contest, really

classic uga logoESPN’s SEC and ACC bloggers had an interesting exchange this week in which they argued the relative merits of UGA and Georgia Tech.

The discussion was prompted by a reader named Tom in Denver who is moving to Atlanta and wanted to be sold on which school he should root for in place of Colorado.

ACC blogger Heather Dinich had the unenviable task of making the case for the Yellow Jackets, and she mainly concentrated on similarities between Tech and CU, like both teams wearing gold and sharing the 1990 national championship, which she noted “is 10 years more recent than the last time the Bulldogs won a national crown.”

Ouch. That’s about the only blow she landed, however.

As for Tech football, her backhanded sales pitch was that “it’s not a bad product on the field. Georgia Tech has played in 14 consecutive bowl games. It’s been 17 years since the Yellow Jackets had a losing record in conference play. And personally, I like Paul Johnson’s offense. It’s unique, it was the best rushing team in the nation last year, and defenses never know when they’re going to get hit with a play of over 20 yards.”

SEC blogger Edward Aschoff made a much more convincing case, but then he had a lot more to work with.

Among the reasons he cited that Tom should switch his allegiance to the Dawgs and not the Jackets was that this year’s team “has the ability to not only win the SEC East but could be a BCS buster for the team that comes out of the West. Following the Bulldogs this year won’t lack excitement, especially with the SEC’s best quarterback in Aaron Murray running the show.”

Also mentioned: SEC coaching dean Mark Richt being “a classy guy,” Uga being “one of the most popular mascots in all of sports,” a rich tradition, playing a game “Between the Hedges,” the annual trip to Jacksonville and “Finally, I think it says everything about the two programs when Bulldogs fans buy Georgia Tech’s season tickets just to get a seat for the Georgia game.”

Good job, Edward. Those are some pretty good reasons to be a Bulldog fan.

But there are many more. In fact, a couple of years ago I wrote a series of blogs listing many of them. So here, in no particular order and compiled together for the first time, are 101 Reasons to be a UGA fan:

1. “It’s Saturday in Athens!”

2. Uga and all his predecessors. The most recognizable — and, as Sports Illustrated said, the best — college mascot in America.

Really? He is moving to Atlanta – not Athens. This is a no-brainer. Funny, though, beacuse he probably thinks UGA is in Atlanta also.

Ramble on,
Too funny about the GED. Let’s see when I left high school, I had an offer to go to Tech. said no. but wasn’t to play any sport. Mine was an Academic. Brother in law had an offer to play baseball. He said no like me. I have seen all over Tech, its full of trolls, nerds, and in the most unsafe place in GA!! Tech hasn’t had a team worth bragging about ever! Even in 90′ part of a NC. 2 years ago Tech was supposed to be writing the book on rushing the ball..UGA came and showed them about rushing and shut them down. IF tech played in the SEC they would be 5/5 against VANDY the past 10 years!

Tech has finished #1 or #2 in rushing last 3 years under Paul Johnson.

His rushing attack runs rings around Richt’s skillset.

Even against winning teams, no one can stop Paul Joghnson’s rushing game.

If you like barking a lot or you are frequently inebriated before noon or you can’t be bothered with finding a trash can or a urinal or if your second favorite sport is nascar, then UGA is the better choice.

If you like real student-athletes, classy and educated fans, chants with real words in them, many years of tradition, and some possibility of winning a conference title then GT is the better choice.

Both have their pros and cons.

Just shows you the difference in loyalties. I moved to Omaha, Nebraska 3 years ago. It has never entered my mind to ever adopt one of the teams in the mid west. I have Gameplan. I watch my Dawgs. I root for the SEC. I tolerate with amusement these teams out here.

I am red and black through and through but must say this. Both UGA and GT are fine institutions and have great academic success and would love for my son to go to either. His choices so far are: UGA, GT, Mercer, Duke, Vanderbilt. I think the his UGA preference is because of me, but I will be happy with whichever he chooses.

Hobbes

To whom it may concern:

As the old adage goes, what do you call attractive girls at Georgia Tech? Visitors. Caucasian ladies at Georgia Tech are few and far between. My own uncle (who obtained both his Bachelor’s and Master’s from Tech) used to go to Athens to find women. Obviously, there’s not much to choose from at Tech (You could always try Agnes Scott — Heard there’s some winners there!). Furthermore, its apparent that many Trolls on here haven’t actually looked up UGA’s Greeklife. 90% of Greek ladies at UGA are dimes. What’s Georgia Tech got?

Now that I’ve gotten off my soapbox of attractive, Southern ladies, back to the original argument which is quite simple. Look at the stadiums on game day. Sanford is always sold out. Look at the conferences. The ACC is like the Big 10… a bunch of cupcakes. SEC produces Heisman winners, national champions, and all out to be at the top. Its the only conference where you can have one loss and still go to the National Championship. Pac 10, ACC, Big 12, or Big 10… one loss and you are done.

Finally, Georgia Tech fans are pretentious people by nature. UGA fan’s know what hospitality is and have never met a stranger. If you like the Dawgs, you’re a friend. Tech’s failure here is because most of their students and alumni are out of state.

If I’m going to hire someone to design a new type of toilet paper that wipes my butt better, he’s going to be from Tech. We all need nerds to develop the things that make like better (like TP or microwaves). If I’m going to hire someone to run my company (say like Aflac — Dan Amos, or Augusta National — Billy Payne, or how about the State of Georgia — Sonny Perdue [All UGA graduates if you didn't catch my drift]), I’m hiring a Georgia boy (or girl).

One last note: According to “The Public Ivies: America’s Flagship Universities” by Howard and Matthew Greene, UGA is considered one of the 30 Public Ivies. This was published in 2001. I will concede that Tech was one of the original runners up when the term was first coined in 1959, but were talking about now. UGA is in that list. Tech is not. I’m okay with being compared to an Ivy League school. Common comparisons are prestige, look and feel, appearance, age, and school traditions.

That should help you out. UGA is the way to go. You’ll make more friends that way, too, since you are new to the area. Tech fans in general are not the more likable bunch.

Your Bulldawg Faithful,
