Are the Dogs a good bet in 2011?
We’ve talked a lot here about the positives the Dogs have approaching the coming season (Aaron Murray, the tight ends and special teams, the arrival of big John Jenkins and the infusion of Dream Team freshman talent, especially at tailback) and the question marks (the offensive line, the safety position, conditioning, the future of the head coach).
And none of that really has changed since spring practice. But what does appear to have changed perceptibly is the view from outside the Bulldog Nation of just what sort of season Georgia is likely to have. As we’ve discussed here recently, we’re starting to see some preseason prognosticators picking the Dogs to stage a big turnaround from a losing season and win the SEC East.
The handicappers in Las Vegas are coming around, too. As Phil Steele noted in a recent post, Georgia is viewed as a favorite in all of its big games after the first two, and while they’re still rated underdogs against Boise State and South Carolina, the line has tightened considerably. Originally the Broncos were a 6-point favorite over Georgia, but now it’s down to just over 1 point. And the Gamecocks, formerly favored by 3 points, are now just a 1-point favorite.
All this is encouraging, but I’m still trying to keep my expectations for this season in check. How about you?

We have a chance but not getting my hopes up until we suit up and play some football. Alabama was supposed to be untouchable but lost three games last year and didnt even win their division. Plus as a dawg fan I’m a little tired of preseason chatter and want some mid-season hype.
I hope I’m wrong, but our oline plays like a bunch of 320+lb women. If we can’t win in the trenches and control the line of scrimmage, we won’t win 7 games.
Keep it in check dawg nation!!

South Carolina is going to self destruct this year, to much hype. The only person attached to the program that can deal with the hype is Spurrier, and he hasn’t seen this type of hype since Fla. I can see the motto from UGA last year being used this year for South Carolina. I asked for change for my dollar, I looked down at 75cents and realized South Carolina can never give me a 4th quarter

odds arent based on who vegas thinks will win. they’re based on getting people to lay down bets. the spread narrowing from 6 points to 1 point just means a ton of people were betting on boise, not that vegas is buying into the annual preseason hype out of athens.

Vegas odds are mostly adjusted according to the current betting patterns. If UGA was a 6 point underdog and is now a 1 point underdog, then there were probably a lot of people betting on UGA after the opening line. It’s not really so much how Vegas feels about UGA as it is how betters are currently feeling about UGA which is probably a better metric anyways.

The line movement means that the professional bettors were betting on UGA. Further proof is the fact that professionals were also betting UGA to go over on the total number of season wins. Vegas likes UGA this year. We will see if they are right.

Vegas has SC winning the SEC East with wins over Ga & Fl. That’s a correct line. Has Fl beating Ga to finish 2nd in SEC East. Also a correct line, Ga was favored in 2010 to beat Fl, caught Fl on a 3 game losing streak, and still figured out a way to lose (4 turnovers by Murray).

JM. Florida opened as a 3 point favorite, not UGA. Game is now a pick in most of the places you can bet these games now. All of these spreads will be different once the season starts.

Math Lesson – Any one with common sense knows that if people are laying down money on Boise at 6 points that bringing down the line to 1 point would only make more people bet on Boise. If money is on Boise you raise the spread to 10 so the money goes on UGA. All of the money was on UGA and that’s why the spread was lowered. It’s obvious you didn’t attend UGA due to your lack of intellect

I think that the Ga Dome will give UGA a home field advantage and that should be all the roll that they need to have a great season. As hard as UGA is working toward that game, don’t you know that “We get no respect” Boise State is working just as hard. And South Carolina is telling it’s players that Georgia is looking at Boise State and not preparing for their first SEC matchup. We’ll know by the middle of September what kind of season we are going to have.

Bill,
How is any of that “encouraging”? What in the world does prognostication, especially at this point in the year, have to do with execution on the field?
We are encouraged because we’ve seen some good things happen in the off season, and we are encouraging because the Dawgs are our team, but there is nothing that can be said by the media
that can or should make us feel good about a season that hasn’t started.

Everyone missed their predictions on Georgia last year except for the idiot haters who have predicted 0-11 or 0-12 seasons for the last 10 years.
2010 They finally got close.
some other fine examples from these blogs:
Georgia will never beat Tech again(after45-42 win in 2008)
Georgia will never win the SEC again(before 2005 season after Greene graduated)
Spurrier will own UGA at SC just like he did at Florida(SOS 2-4 vs UGA at SC)
There are others too numerous to mention

Those oddsmakers must be a oblivious group to pick UGA at all this year. It is encouraging because guys like Steve Fezzik and Billy Walters are moving the lines, and they know more about football and money than anyone reading this board. Doesn’t mean they are right about UGA, but they will be right on more teams than they are wrong. UGA still has to get it done on the field, but it is an encouraging sign. This isn’t media hype. This is real experts with big dollars. They are also heavy on Notre Dame and Tennessee. They are going heavy against Auburn.

The money line ebbs and flows based on perception in an effort to get above a 50/50 juice.
I’ll tell you this right now: if the Dawgs beat Boise State convincingly and are favored at home vs. South Carolina -3, if you’re smart you put your money on South Carolina! However if they lose to Boise State, yet are favored at home come kickoff time vs. South Carolina by say -4.5…then I’m putting my money HEAVY on UG and watch as they destroy USC!! LOL…
I remember last season, the Dawgs were favored at home vs. UT like -11 and everyone thought that was crazy considering how they were 1-4 and coming off a loss to Colorado while UT just lost a heartbreaker vs. a good LSU team. But I put money on the -11 because I knew UGA’s offense was due for a breakout game while that the Vols would come out flat after the heartbreaker the week before. Both turned out to be right. Those are the best games, when you put money on your team and they kick butt. Conversely, the worst games to watch are the ones where you know your team is going to lose, and you bet against them because you know that’s the right pick. Even when you win money, it just sucks.

The first group of OL is solid and experienced. The next group is where the issue is. no experience and some are true freshmen and there are a couple recovering from injuries.
Coach Friend has quite a challenge in keeping these guys healthy. Look for one or two of the true freshmen to have to provide depth.
2002 team had a similar group. Experienced 1st team and a bunch of freshmen backups. that team was 9th in the SEC in rushing. The defense only gave up 14 PPG
That is what is going to have to happen in 2011.

@nostrodamus, my thoughts exactly. Spurrier will reinstate Garcia for what his 8th time before the season only to lose to the Dawgs and then kick him off the team for good for “violation of team rules” when he realizes Shaw is a better QB. I called this one last week, haha.

Things to watch for in the Boise State and South Carolina games:
1- Can our offensive line make a hole for our running backs well into the fourth quarter ?
2- Have the defensive back’s learned the 3-4. Are there any missed assignments between the defensive backs and the linebackers?
3- Does Murray hesitate to run if he can get 5 or more yards?
4-With an All American field goal kicker are we going to use him more than we did last year?
5- When we march down the field and score does Bobo decide a try something different the next time we have the ball or will he finally develop the philosophy ” If IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT ”
6- Will Bobo seem lost when a critical decision has to be made?

My 2 biggest concerns for 2011 would be the health/depth of the offensive line, and Coach Bobo’s approach to play-calling over the past 2-3 years. In close games, we can’t afford the predictable, and sometimes nonsensical, plays that Bobo calls. He lacks the killer instinct, it seems.
Specifically, at key times he will stop something that is working in favor of a feeble attempt to establish some other part of our offense that has NOT worked consistently. So, we waste drives and come up short. IF we are playing a game in 2011, and the passing game just happens to be clicking on all cylinders, does Coach Bobo have the willingness to keep throwing it, even if we ended the game with 48 passes and 15 runs — and 48 points!? Based on his recent tendencies, I say NO. (the most obvious example of this is the 2010 GA Tech game, where Tech could not come close to stop our passing game during the first half (11-14 for 220 yds and 3 TDs). So, in the 2nd half we throw only 5 times (completing 4 for 51 yds), keep trying to run the ball — losing 2 fumbles, and barely hold on to win the game.)
Brent Benedict and Austin Long may be surprise keys to this season. If these highly touted, but significantly injured offensive linemen can contribute, we may have the depth to survive on the OL. Hope so……. GO Dawgs!!! (Just try not to run up the middle on almost every 2nd & 10 following a 1st down incomplete pass, OK!?!?! It’s just not a running down unless we have the return of Herschel…) With OL depth and better play-calling, we could go 10-2 or 11-1. My prediction is that the defense will be surprisingly good……and hard-hitting. Woof!!!

From what I hear IC and Boo… the two most are counting on have come into camp in poor shape. Both have been throwing up and not able to complete the work-outs with other team members. Word is John Jenkins is the man everyone thought and will soon be working out with the veterans.
Is there any Auburn fans out there that can tell me what’s going on with Russell Wilson? If you guys get him combined with your coaching staff look out.

Been in ATL for 3 years – best place in the country to argue college football.
During my time here – I have dived deep into SEC culture – and kept an eye on the ACC.
Even made it to games at UGA, Auburn, Tennessee and Alabama.
I look forward to visiting the Swamp, tailgate at Ole Miss and visit Death Valley.
Personnally – could care less about visiting Vandy, Miss. State, Arkansas or KY(except for basketball).
Now about UGA.
Moved here – and later that year – UGA preseason #1 – Stafford and Moreno.
I knew UGA was overated as they had such a young O-Line – which is too much to ask for.
Team went 10-3 – and found ways to win some tight games.
2009 – 8-5 little bit of a rebuild year – UGA was hurt by Stafford and Moreno leaving.
J.Cox was a good QB – but not a feature player. He needed a better team around him – no running game and defense was iffy. If he was at Alabama – he could have won a National Title.
2010 – 6-7 – Really thought UGA would be better – but hindsight – all those arrests and FULMER CUP champions tell you all you need to know. The inmates were running the asylum. Leadership from Authority was lacking – players were entitled – took the lumps this year to learn 3-4 defense. Inconsistency in skill positions due to suspensions – arrests – hurting team continuity. O-Line very inconsistent – as been the last few years. Just a bad year for UGA football – and the UCF game was icing on the cake.
NOW – what about 2011???????
1. 3-4 defense will better for several reasons:
– LB Corp is upgrades
– Real NT’s
– People criticize DB play – but if D-Line and OLB’s not pressuing QB – and NFL secondary would have been toast. UGA has very good DB’s.
2. Negative Influence players gone. No arrests this year?
3. Revamped S& C program – fixing what was broken.
4. Staff is on the hot seat – should rebound as this is a very proud program.
All of this is on paper – Dogs could implode, lay eggs, you never know – but I will tell this to the Mark Richt Haters out there. This guy has been successful – and made the changes needed.
O-Line coach is gone to Texas (this is a good thing)
New S&C program complete with Nutrition
Upgraded Defense players that fit the system
Now it comes down to developing on field knowledge, understanding the game – team chemistry on the field (and off the field), leadership from players, unity and cohessiveness on the field – and being consistent.
I am cautiously optimistic about Boise’s chances in the Dome – we have been there before – and this giam is our season. Give Coach Peterson time to prepare – and we will be ready to play with anyone. UGA is on the rebound – but has a ways to go.
I thing UGA will get beat by Boise – but will improve greatly during the year.
The SCaroline game is 50/50 – S. Carolina plays great early and mid season – but sucks at the end of the season (at least the last 3 years) DANGEROUS GAME for both teams.
Other potential losses are Mississippi State (overachiving and well coached team) and FLORIDA.
Florida is probably more talented and deeper than UGA – it comes down to coaching and execution.
UGA goes 8-4 to 10-2.

Sounds like Vegas is trying to hard sell the first two games. Boo to that. If the rankings mean anything (and I am prone to think they don’t) BSU should clearly be favored. The avg. rankings have BSU somewhere around #5-10 vs. UGA at #19-unranked. BSU may be over ranked, but they are good. And, they are coming to ATL to prove something. I hope our Dawgs are ready to fight for four quarters. USC is probably the most under ranked team in the nation, and Spurier is tickled pink about it. SC is always a fight. This year it is a bloodbath. This year it decides the East. UF is also under rated, but that is one heck of tough schedule for a first year coach and a new scheme. I look for it to be a three way tie settled by extraneous factors.

Question – with ATL being the true captial of all things college football and IMHO -the best crossroads of all thing college football:
Why is GT in the ACC?
What happened?
Imagine if Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, Alabama and LSU were rotating in for games!
All these fans that live in the Atlanta area!!!
This city would buzz even more than it does now!
ESPN would have to set up a permanent studio
– crossroads of the SEC
– College football classic
– Chick-fil-A bowl
- UGA 90 minutes, Auburn 2 hours, USCe 3 hours, Alabama 3 hours, Tennessee 3 hours,
- College football Hall of Fame relocating to ATL
GT right in the middle – has 4 NT.s Bobby Dodd and John Heisman.
Holy cow – should’nt GT be in the SEC????
What the heck happened?

If an average South Carolina team can win the East in 2010 after losing to a cupcake in the previous season’s bowl, then there’s no reason why an average Georgia team can’t win the East in 2011 after losing to a cupcake in the previous season’s bowl.
But all I’m thinking of is that game in the Dome! Go Dawgs!

Up until 12 days, Vegas also had McCain winning the presidential election and we all know how that turned out. Vegas generates money by getting people to bet, plain and simple. If there are long odds, more people are tempted to bet because of the higher pay back. Basing or even picking a teams performance based on what Las Vegas handicappers give odds, is a pretty poor way to pick the records or top teams in football. If they truly believed all of the betting lines they first put out, they would lose money and not be in business.
I sure think Murray is capable of taking UGA to the SEC Championship game. If the O line holds up, and King and Crowell are able to do the job at RB, the DAWGS can surprise more than a few people. There are still a fair amount of questions yet, as to how well the OL will do. Will they be able to increase their learning curve quickly enough to do the job well? No one knows but I think the coach we have will give it his best shot. It is not will they be good together, I think it is more, when will they be good together.

No way the Dogs lose the BSU. Too physical and prepared regardles of the Mission to wherever church boy is going. SC is a differerent matter. In the SEC be prepared for the slip-ups. The puppies are prepared and will make a point against BSU. I’m a SEC loyalist and I have faith in the SEC in openers against gimmicks. UGA will will 10 games but lose against a nondescript SEC foe and UF. Sorry for the Techies once again. CMR will keep his job and puppy nationh will be ok with Murray coming back and a chance (albeit slim) to beat UF again.

SC will be UGAs toughest game either coming into it with a disappointing loss or overinflated with a win. MSU is the spoiler, and if not UT might be. Mullen may be the best coach in the NCAA. Jax has been disappointing over and over again. I aint getting my hopes up. AU, never can tell…. Do we play ‘em in Auburn? I hope so. I don’t think this is Tech’s year. UF will take too many lumps against its West schedule and lose one in the East. The SC game decides the East.

Boise in ATL, Ga. Tech was in the SEC until about 1966, then pulled out to go the Independent route. A disaster, almost went down a few notches until ACC came calling with expansion. They wanted back in SEC, but league voted them down since they spurned the league earlier. I think they wanted to be big time basketball power, but Hewitt destroyed that. They really should be in SEC, as they are in the heart of the SEC territory and the Atlanta market being the largest in the Southeast. That being said, the SEC has being doing quite well without Ga.Tech, don’t you think!!

I feel good about Boise, not so good about USC, coaching, and a few other games. MSU, UF, and AU to name three. Richt has been unable to get his team “really” prepared to play the last four years. The inconsistency prevents me from having any expectations. The positive side of me could see UGA having a season similar to Auburn’s last year. One game at a time, not really looking that good until almost the end of the season. Of course they had “Superman” who was a huge difference maker in most of their games.

I know Boise’s pretty good, but I’m shocked they would be favored against UGA in the Dome. I know haters are going to say that UGA is going to lose that game, & I’m not saying it’s not a dangerous opener. Boise actually just lost a lot of players off last yrs. team, & even thought they have played well against some good teams, they don’t play the schedule that UGA does. Anybody who’s honest w/ themselves should know that UGA has more talent than B

more talent than Boise. Now, I know that doesn’t always determine who wins, but it really isn’t a stretch to think that just bc UGA has struggled recently while playing in the SEC…that they may not turn out pretty good, & at least win against Boise.

The recruiting program at UGA has a major fly in the ointment. Although UGA every year, as it did this year, has a top 5-10 recruiting class, it is not among the top 10 schools in putting out first round NFL draft picks. Among the top 6 are FL, TN, FL State and Miami. So you may be watching the best high school talent in Athens but you are not watching top NFL talent.

Rabun Dawg. Whats your point ? Tech is much more appropriate in the ACC as it is competing with schools of a similar academic level. This should be the #1 indicator of conference compatibility. For Tech, there is little compatibility with any of the SEC schools other than perhaps Vandy.

I just want to see the guys play their hardest every second of every game. I deal with a lot of young people, and in general the most sorely needed value is that hard work=success. There is no worse feeling than knowing deep inside you could have done more. I think that is what is churning the guts of this team right now, and if it aint, it should be. I hope the DAWGS do stay under the radar and that Boise is picked to win. Then when the DAWGS win the game, you will see all kinds of fair weather fans of UGA, jump on board. Teams do best when they have something to prove and when the Odds makers or whatever these so called experts pick another team to beat you, it fires you up just a little bit and gets the competitive juices going just a little more. If it doesn’t inspire the players to step it up just a little more, than they probably will never be a good fit for the team they play for and need to move on.
