Dawgs continue unlikely rise in preseason picks

Aaron Murray seems to be the key to optimistic preseason picks for Georgia. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Aaron Murray seems to be the key to optimistic preseason picks for Georgia. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

If this keeps up, I’m not sure I’m going to be able to keep my inner optimist from taking over.

I’m talking about another national college football preview picking Mark Richt’s Dawgs to win the SEC East in 2011, following on the heels of Phil Steele. This time it’s Athlon Sports, which sees Georgia winning the East and then losing to Alabama in the Georgia Dome.

The Athlon analysis of the conference sees the league’s balance of power remaining “tilted in westerly direction.” In the East, a return to Atlanta for the South Carolina Gamecocks is deemed “far from certain, especially with the ongoing drama with quarterback Stephen Garcia.” Meanwhile, Athlon notes that Richt “is probably one mediocre season away from unemployment. Fortunately for him, he has the horses to win the division, led by quarterback Aaron Murray, who has transitioned from question mark to lead Dawg.”

Georgia, Athlon says, “has perhaps the league’s top returning quarterback … a highly rated recruiting class and a favorable schedule.”

Of course, they do ask, “Has the SEC ever entered a season with less returning star power at quarterback? When a redshirt sophomore (Georgia’s Murray) is arguably the top returning QB, that says something.”

The final analysis is that “this might not be a vintage Georgia team that is capable of competing for a national title, but the Bulldogs should be in the hunt to win the relatively mediocre SEC East.”

OK, definitely a bit underwhelming as votes of confidence go, but when you’re coming off a losing season getting picked to win your division is noteworthy. Even if it does look like an off year in that division.

What do you think, are Steele and Athlon just dazzled by Murray’s freshman numbers and the whole “Dream Team” thing, or are they on to something?

MASCOT SHOWDOWN

It’s a dog fight in SportsNation and EA’s “NCAA Football Traditions” voting as Georgia’s Uga and Tennnessee’s Smokey battle in the first round. As of this morning, Uga was in the lead with 52 percent of just over 30,000 votes tallied so far. You can cast yours here.

New UGA spot will focus on ringing the Chapel Bell. (University of Georgia)

Most UGA alums and fans I heard from thought last year’s low-rent spot promoting the university that aired during football television broadcasts was pretty embarrassing. So a group of alums, including some TV production professionals, decided to offer their services to come up with something better.

Thursday, a couple of hundred volunteers lined up in front of the UGA Chapel in Athens for filming on the commercial, which will show an endless line of students and alums lining up to ring the Chapel Bell. The promotional spot also will feature the song “Oh My Heart” by Athens’ own R.E.M., The Red and Black reports.

“What happened is, I think like a lot of Georgia alumni, I was disappointed with the UGA TV spot,” said alumnus Mike Martin, creative director of the commercial. “Rather than be a voice of criticism, I wanted to do something about it.”

Martin said R.E.M. agreed to have their song used in the UGA spot “because they love Athens so much and they wanted it to be a celebration of the University and the town of Athens.”

The new spot is scheduled to air Sept. 3 during the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game with Boise State.

Martin said many college commercials show generic images of professors holding test tubes and students throwing frisbees on campus. For the new video, however, they instead chose to showcase what makes the university and Athens special.

“We want people to choke up a little bit and be proud of being a Bulldog,” he said.

I’m getting a little verklempt already!

I am not sure Georgia can take the SEC East this year, But I think they can have a 9 win season. They have a lot of inexperience so the learning curve will have to be high at some positions. I would be happy with a 9 win season and know that they played with heart and dedication to the team and the school.

Murray has played in 13 games losing 7 of them.
UGA is a pick because of the Easy Schedule and the facts that the East is a little down. UGA has a coach that has been there the longest and USC can’t ever be good a few years in a row.
I still think The Vols have as much a shot to win the east as anybody in the SEC east.

DawginLex (the East is wide open) and Rocket Science (learning curve) are both correct. For me, that means I have a hard time settling on any expectations at this point. I do believe nine wins is attainable but predictions about winning the East make me a little nervous at this point. Its fun to think about but I fear that is getting a little ahead of ourselves just yet. Let the so-called experts make all the predictions they want, we just need to work hard and focus on one game at a time.

I once saw Matthew Stafford rescue a young man from the gripping jaws of an alligator. In spring of 2007 Matthew was on a summer ‘retreat’ with Shaun Chapas and Chris Durham deep in the bayou in Louisiana. This young man, who spoke only Creole, was in the clutches of a big bull gator. Much to the surprise of Shaun and Chris, Matt started speaking perfect Creole and ’spirit talked’ (an old Native American spoken word narrative about the dangers of crossing paths with any gringo with the last name Stafford) that young man out of that gator’s mouth. That young man was none other than the fames Willie Edwards from the smash hit ‘Swamp People’ on the History Channel. He lost his front tooth in the ordeal, but is ever-so-grateful for Matt’s kind gesture, he learned how to speak English and named his first born after Matt, Matthew Elizabeth Stafford Edwards. Who is a female, mind you. Matt then went to Amici’s when he got back to Athens, which he devoured 2 whole (not half, mind you) orders of buffalo chicken garcheemar and bought a round for the entire place to celebrate his gift of life. By all accounts, it was delicious.

@It Ain’t Rocket Science I agree 9 wins is a pretty good mark this year, just too many unknowns on this squad and the first two games will give us OTJT but can we learn and win at the same time? I really think if we were healthy and played Boise the 4th or 5th game we would blow their doors off , but starting the year off with a new OL will keep it close.

I think we’re going to see a much improved UGA team with Crowell & Jenkins & Drew leading the way. If you go back and look at the past few years on rivals or scout, you’ll see Georgia is absolutely LOADED with talent. With Murray & 3-4 defense going through 1st year growing pains, with an improved rushing game, and rush defense, a weak schedule, I think LSU will eventually go to Mettenberger as the starter. So the SEC match up might be Murray vs. Mettenberger. I like Mettenberger in that match up, face it, he destroyed Murray head to head last Spring, heck of a QB.

Bill, Looks pretty iffy for the Dawgs. If they leave Chris Burnette at OG, then you’ve got a good starting offensive line. The problem is lack of depth. Can you keep a kid motivated when no one is there competing for his position? Really no excuse for a program like UGA to be in this situation. More importantly, it will probably effect your offensive options as well. How physical can you afford to be when one injury to a starter could be devastating. Richt/Bobo were never interested in a physical, ball control offense, but losing that option can’t help. It’s not just about the lack of numbers either. The talent level drops significantly from your 1st unit to 2nd, And at least two back -ups have suffered significant injuries from high school , And another suffers from asthma like conditions. Do these so called experts realize how close you are to playing walk-ons as starters on your offensive line!? They’re like the Richt/Bobo brain trust – an incredible lack of foresight.

Well I wouldn’t exactly say having Murray being the best returning quarterback is a mediocre year for the position. The guy put up AMAZING stats in his first year of competition behind an under performing line, and he didn’t even have his best play-maker available for the first four games. The one guy that outperformed him last year won the Heisman Trophy and won a National Championship, plus he had three years of collegiate experience, an amazing O-Line, and a great Freshman running back. I just think Aaron Murray is that much better than most of the others available this year. This year should be a good sign of his athleticism and ability to make it without all world receiver A.J. Green. I think he will drill the rest of the league and show he is an elite prospect for Georgia.

In his interview with ESPN Will Muschamp said something very true. He said the SEC is an “up-front” league. Which means games are decided by the offensive and defensive lines. This year we will be awesome on DLine and it will help our secondary make plays. Our OLine really worries me however. But UF if you will remember only had 7 total Olineman including walk-ons during spring camp. So they have more issues than we do at present. The best OLine and DLine combo is USCe. They are the easy favorites for Eastern Champ. A team that lost to UCF should not be even mentioned. We need to earn respect by beating Boise badly!!

Here’s what is real Dawg fans….

UGA has no offensive line (not even close to as good as the last two seasons). Do you even realize how bad our OL’s have been?

We have virtually no WR’s returning that are worthy of commenting about.

Our RB situation is horrid at best and Crowell is gonna be a freshman. He’s no HW#34…not to mention he might be a little slow at picking up the offensive scheme. That lead a lack luster CK and an unproven redshirt…Oh yeah go ahead and build it up agian. Sorry but nothing really here yet.

Our DL? Hmm? let see….we are getting excited over a bunch of freshman here once again? Seriously? Do we not learn from the past?

DB’s once again will struggle with coverage, but mostly due to lack of pressure applied by the less than steller DL that you seem to think with be great overnight.

After SC wins the East again and UF waxes our butts again Mark Richt will be looking for another job. I really don’t want that either beacuse I love the guy. Coach TG I’m afraid is a little overwhelmed by the different offensive looks in the college gaame. Yes…CFB has many more different formation than the pro’s. several in which they never use in pro’s…including triple option(Tech), Spread(true spread), West coast with the pistol grip.

This is the truth and you’ll never face it. Every year we sound more and more like Carolina and they look more like UGA of past years….sad but true…

I can’t believe the Richt/Bobo two headed monster chose to bury him at back up linebacker. What goes through the heads of those two?! They’re killing you. Also, this kid Armarlo Herrera is the real deal at linebacker, so lack of depth won’t be a factor when you move Samuel back. Let the kid compete at Running Back. That’s where his future lies. QB Aaron Murray will have the entire weight of the world on his shoulders vs Boise State. He needs to display CRISP multi QB talents of passing accurately, running and field general ship. He must step up. The Florida game and the UCF game exposed him for what he is ………….. a highly emotional kid. He alone blew the Florida game and will aways be remembered for that ………….. unless he can change it with the first game and the SC game at home. Two in a row for UGA are essentially home games.

If he does not step up …………. then the QB spot needs to be wide open with the crew behind him. Richt by then, would be a lame duck.

Mettenberger is the best QB in the SEC. He blew A. Murray away when he went against hm at UGA, not even close. And Mettenberger led his team to the National Championship and had better stats than Murray last season. LSU’s QB will struggle again, Mettenberger will come in and rock the world. If Georgia gets to the SEC Championship, they’ll have to go through LSU and their nemesis Mettenberger, which won’t happen. LSU will be Natl Champs, Mettenberger MVP.

*************************************************************

You pony up as much cash as you can find and I will do the same and we can make this bet.

Mett won’t even be the starter this year.

Jordan Jefferson is being coached by OC Steve Kragthorpe and LSU has absolutely no plans to make Mett the starter.

You are the same person who always posts spring game stats and expect us to accept them as proof of your idiotic logic. You also believe Mett transferred along with Ealey.

So you’re telling me Peyton Manning wasn’t a good quarterback because he never won an SEC Championship? Statistics are the only measure of an individual performance in a team sport dude. I only stated the Central Florida game, because that was the only time during the season where his performance wasn’t up to par with the rest of the year. It’s not me only choosing to see specific numbers or achievements. Elite players don’t achieve the status strictly based on wins and losses, but their performance and how they help their team.

UGA has terrible coaches and coaches just don’t change in one offseason.

And I can’t believe you are arguing that UGA has depth at OLine. Take off the red and black shades my friend. UGA is thin at that position which is why it is such a high recruiting priority this year and has been publicly stated so.

Bobo tried to teach each one how to carry the ball without fumbling but none of the three could break bad habits. King still has time to be a very productive back for UGA but will have to prove he has learned something.

On the surface yes, but you aren’t thinking about the REAL concept of depth.

Think about this, “That football team is deep on the line with 4 seniors, 2 juniors, 3 sophomores”.

Compares to, “That football team needs some depth there, while they have 2 seniors, the rest of the line only consists of sophomores and true freshmen”.

The number of linemen is only a part of determining true depth.

Oh and regarding the main pt of the article: I would prefer our pre-season rankings/opinions to be just high enough to keep us withing BCS consideration but low enough to keep these Dawgs working hard and others underestimating us. Murray did lead his team to the state championship but it was not at the highest level it was 4A not 5 or 6A. The kid is a great leader but my concern is his height. He has to roll out to really see his receivers and in several games his interceptions cost us; especially in Jax. I find it odd that these pubs would pile on the praise on a kid who has yet to beat a team in college with a winning record. There are too many iffs for UGA this year: OLine depth, receivers, too many new faces on defense with a blowhard calling the plays and of course being led by a coach who did not have the nads to go for a 4th and inches against UCF. Ok people need to get off Murray. He performed greatly last season. He had one of the greatest Freshman seasons any QB has ever had. Did any of you stop to think for a second that maybe, just maybe those losses weren’t all on Murray?! We had a defense too, or lack thereof. Murray wasn’t playing defense. He was playing QB. And he played well enough to win. He lit Florida up, he lit Auburn up, he lit almost everyone he faced up. He’s gonna be an All-Time great before he leaves UGA. Oh and yes, he will get that win over a winning team this season.

South Carolina’s QB can’t stay out of trouble or lead his team to victory. Auburn fans yeah you have a good QB in Cam Newton but how much did you pay for him? You almost figured this thing out. under BVG we were near the bottom in offense. now we stay near the top and our defense sucks. yes sucks. Look people this is’nt rocket sci. All you have to do is have a Superior defense and the rest will fall into place. History tells us this in every sport ever played. Every year in the NFL, NCAA, NBA, MLB, NHL…an so on the top most dominating defense in that particular league finishes within the top two. I can give you several if not hundreds on instances where the top offense blows it not because of the offense but because of the lack of defense. The same cannot be said for the top defenses. As a matter of fact several times the Nation champion in CFB has had not that great of offense.

Cam Newton did what he did due to the brains of Gus Malzon. Ol Guss simplified the offense for Newton and called plays for his abilities. We do not have a coaching staff that does that here

Georgia Tech fans come on here to bash us but they can’t beat us. Beat us then bash us ok? They don’t even run a college offense so they have NO ROOM to talk.

South Carolina, oh South Carolina…win an SEC title before you pop off ok? Stephen Garcia can’t win the game with his arm. He has to rely on Lattimore and it was quite evident last season. You guys aren’t dominating the SEC. You still lost 5 games last season.

They’re sure being dazzled by something, Bill, but I think it’s largely in comparison to the dullness of the other teams in the East. I haven’t bought into the championship, yet with early momentum it’s definitely possible. But if the Dawgs start out 0-2, all the air will be sucked out of these inflated predictions, and the biggest concern will be keeping the whole season from going flat. Boise state 56, UGA 13? Now does that even sound logical?

We are talking about College Football! Do you think LOGIC has a damn thing to do with it? HAHAHHA that would be your first mistake. If Logic had anything to do with it I would figure 60-70% of the college players would not even be allowed in college in the first place.

And to give you some insight on how strongly that view was held when I first moved to Atlanta the only place in town where you could by a drink was in the airport. Strike that buy a legal drink.

As for the Dawgs in ‘11, I don’d understand the excitement over what the ‘dream team’ recruiting class is going to do for us this year. They are true freshmen, and we need help on the O and D lines. If we end up using true freshmen on the line in the SEC, we’re toast. We need to replace AJ, and other than AJ, I don’t recall a true frosh having a stellar year in Athens.
In other words, Go Dawgs, sic ‘em………but I’m not overly optimistic. We have the classiest coach who has a proven track record, but I’m just not sure this staff is the one to get it done.

Maybe Crowell is Herschel and propels us to great heights, maybe he’s Jasper and becomes synonimous with ‘bust’, or maybe he’s Knowshon and redshirts because he doesn’t pick up the ‘blocking schemes’. Either way, if you’re counting on a class of freshmen to help right away in the SEC, things are probably not going to go well.

Murray is a good, may become great, qb. We have to keep him off of his back and find him a running game to help. Play action offense, Bobo’s preference, does not work if you can’t run the ball.

I for one am changing my attitude this year — mostly because of what is happening in college football these days (the Pryor, Tressel, Auburn paying players, Newton, and oversigning scandals). There is so much cheating going on I’m just hoping we can have a clean program with an ethical leader at the helm. I think CMR is an outstanding role model and plays by the rules. I will no longer call for CMR to be fired. The only thing I care about is that the bulldogs play with heart and never give up. There were too many games last year where it looked like the bulldogs gave up after falling behind. If I get the sense that this year’s team is leaving everything they have on the field and playing their hearts out until the final whistle — I don’t care if they lose every game. All we can really ask for is that they play to the best of their abilities and play for the pride of the school. It’s like the coach says in the movie “The Replacements” — what we need is heart. I think this year will show that this group of bulldogs, lead by Aaron Murray, will play with a lot of heart — and that will feel my heart with joy, win or lose.

If UGA finishes second in the East and wins 9 games Richt will keep his job, and that is exactly why UGA will never be a top program again. That would make 4 years in a row that Richt and UGA would be insignificant in the SEC and in the National spotlight. Yet UGA fans would be O.K. with this type of mediocrity. I guess UGA fans don’t understand the concept of “What Have You Done For Me Lately” If Richt was in any other business, he would have been fired 2 years ago. Hell if he was at any of UGA’s SEC rivals he would have been fired, but not at UGA, where medicrity REIGNS!! Do you think this clown would still be at BAMA, FLorida, LSU, Tenn., or even Auburn with this record the last 3 years? Don’t think so. Good luck to all the cool-aid drinkers and mediocre fans. Like to see a running QB at Georgia, like Shockley did, works well in SEC, look at how well Tebow did, and also Newton. Richt ain’t got the guts to risk injury, but running QB’s rarely get injured in the SEC. If Murray or Lemay got 1000+ rushing like Newton did, Georgia probably wins the SEC.

So handing the ball to Ealey against KY (forgetting the QB is the one who decides the play is a run, and where) doesn’t count. But if the RB fumbles the ball (3 losses), that’s entirely on the QB. Got it.

Can UGA win the east? Of course, anything is possible, but some things have to happen. Here are my thoughts. 1- Give a brother a break. Pressure the QB with the front seven. Nothing helps the secondary more than a QB running for his life and throwing before he is ready. 2- Again with the front seven, stop the run so that the safeties and CBs don’t have to help. 3- Get the running game going. I don’t care if the new guy can block or not. A RB with 4.4 speed needs the ball in his hands. 4- A WR needs to step up and take some heat off T. King. Scott-Wesley at 215 and fast can be a real weapon. So can Mitchell and Smith, and Seay may be the sleeper of this class. 5- Keep the O line healthy, at least to some of the young guys can help. I like the starters but there is a real lack of depth there.

UGA can’t be explained unless you look at how bad they do against real competition, like ranekd teams, 2-9 last 2 years.

When playign winning teams in 2010:
1- 12th in to margin in SEC
2- 10th in scoring
3- 10th in red zone td’s
4- 12th on 3rd down defense
5- 12th in fumble recovery

Who cares how you do against Loisiana Lafayette & Idaho State?
How did you do against South Carolina, Florida, Miss St, etc.

Funny how people say defense wins championships, but as soon as you do not win its the offenses fault. UGA scored over 20 points in three of their 7 loses, unfortunately the defense gave up over 20 points. If the defense was worth a crap last year there is three wins. Easily could have been 9-4, if the defense does its job and plays better.

You must not remember when Tubs ran all over Richt’s defense, and he told Richt in order to win in the SEC you have to be able to run the damn ball. Well Tubs knew it, and he still got canned, your savior Richt still hasn’t grasped that concept, and the clown is still in Athens. This clown and his Boy BooBoo have no clue of how to develop a running game, and that’s why they will never, and i mean NEVER win another SECC. Too many good coaches in the league now, Saban, Miles, Spurrier, Dooley, Cheesestick, that all understand that simple concept, but the idiot Richt and his hand picked O.C. haven’t figured it out yet. Hell even Muschamp at Fl. understands that, he has to, he played under Dooley. Go drink your cool-aid, and get back to me after the first two games, by then even your cool-aid will be sour

Maybe if i put clown in my post more often, you will get the picture. By the way, for any clown that thinks UGA is better than South Carolina, i have a few facts for you. S.C has depth at running back, wide receiver, O.L., D.L, Linebacker and Secondary, especially the saftey positions, something that Richt and his wonderful stafff doesn’t , due to their lack of recruiting by need. Keep drinking the cool-aid, and keep reading rivals, because that’s all that Garner and RIcht do.

Roper,

It is kind of unfair to compare Tebrow and Newton and say other QB’s in the league or specifically UGA should have the qb running. Tebrow and Newton were rather big kids compared to most teams QB’s. LeMay is even lighter than Murray, so I can’t see him getting 1000 yards rushing no matter what. I don’t believe Alabama had a running QB and they won the MNC. Athletes like Tebrow and Newton do not come along that often. I really don’t even see any 2012 recruits that measure physically to these two coming in at QB. QB’s usually run when they WR’s are covered or a play is broken. A good pocket passer can be just as productive as a running QB.

I bleed old gold and white, but I hope they are correct. I’d LOVE to see UGA win the SEC East (In fact aanyione other than Darth Visor or the Jort-wearing swamp-dwellers!). However, I think 1 word sums up why it won’t happen: Bobo. He is way too predictable to be competitive in the SEC. As far as players go, ya’ll are just fine — even on the OL and at WR. Talent has NEVER been an issue for UGA. Coaching and motivation however are another story. I really like CMR and think he is a good man (and remember, I’m a TECH grad!), but he’s got to drop the gimmicks and truly inspire his team this season or he will be coaching elsewhere next season, and that would truly be a shame.

Good luck and best wishes to The Dawgs —– until that last game in November anyway!!!

I think both programs are flying under the national radar at the moment, but both are going to have a few surprises for some opponents next season!

Let’s take a quiz?
#1. Since the SEC east goes through Gainesville (Jacksonville for the Dawgs) the only team Richt needs to have a winning record against is The GATORS.
#2. Hahhaha 13 games played and lost 7 of them. That is the BEST the SEC has to offer at QB Really?
#3. All those coaches you mentioned have National Championships too. So Richt will win the MNC @ UGA?
#4. That depends on who you ask.

Articles like these are what make soooo many of you Dawg fans DELUSIONAL! i.e. DDFs (Delusional Dawg Fans). As this keeps up (if any of you dumbarses were trolling mag-racks) – you’ll see Lindy’s ALSO has UGA ranked in the Top 16 (#16). And, mark my words here NOW (6/17) …… 99.421% of you DDFs will be swearing GA goes 11-2, 12-1 or…or, yes 13-0. I’ll bet my life on it.

Here’s a pretty good prediction for you DDFs:

UGA will win more than ONE game, and LESS than ELEVEN. And if, IF UGA wins the SEC East don’t go beating you chest thinking it’s some great accomplishment ….. the one thing these mags are getting correct is that the SEC East is pretty much a joke in 2011. It’ll be like being the tallest midget!

GA wins 10 (and no more) if they start 2-0. 7 or fewer if they start 0-2. Bet your mortgage on it.

1. Murray will be just fine at QB and will be a team leader.
2. Boykin will be a leader on the D side of the ball.
3. Todd Grantham’s 3-4 D will be much improved over 2010. remember Saban’s 1st year at Bama with the 3-4 was a total loss.
4. No off-field issues so far this spring shows much improvement for not only our players but that our coaches are doing a much better job as well.

We may not win the east but, our chances of having a much improved season looks promising.

For all you bashing Arron Murray, He never lost a single game for UGA last season, and for anyone thinking that he’s he player responsible for losing the Florida game.

Q: What do you call a UGA player in a three-piece suit?

A: The defendant!

Excited, aren't we?

June 18th, 2011
9:13 am

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

I don’t know too many Dawg Fans in my running circles that are counting on freshman and still expect this to be a betetr team, gotta go. I do know a pretty long list of returning players that give we discuss as reasons to think this is a better team. WHY would you say we have less talent? A 6-7 team turning it around wasn;t going to come down to a couple of players. There’s not a team on our schedule that hasn’t lost as much , if not more talent that we did. And from a standpoint of “They mattered”, I’d say other teams have lost a lot more.

I would trade AJ’s impact last year for a QB in his second year in a heartbeat. And I would trade any player on our defense for having that entire squad starting the year actually knowing what to do in yr 2.

I disagree we have less talent this year, but even IF that were true, clearly talent had no bearing last year. I’d say most Dawg fans believe this is a better prepared team overall. 7 wins might be, but no way is that a ceiling. Heck they were a handfull of points, literally a play away in some cases, of winning 10 last year with the worst set of circumstances you could put out there.

Coach Spurrier is, I believe 66 years old now and is trying to build a legacy after a few tarnished years playing with the big kids, and I believe he will do anything possible to go out a winner. I am not saying he will cut corners or cheat, but he, just like a lot of you accuse Saban of doing, will try and do what is necessary to go out on top. He has a formidable team and good players at most positions. I am not sure of his depth but SC should still be on top of the SEC East, if his starters stay healthy, and Garcia shows some on field and off field maturity. UGA can give them a good game, and maybe upset them, if the offensive line holds up and the folks at the positions, play beyond their experience level. Never under estimate the determination of a scorned team and UGA has certainly got a fair amount to prove. They should be playing with a chip on their shoulder and if they play smash mouth football, It could be a good game with S.C.

I love the dawgs but just cant drink the Kool-aid you’re serving. Too many questions and not enough answers. Murray looked great last year and should be even better this year, but defense is still unproven. Yes there’s talent, but much of it is young and untested. That usually means turnovers, penalties, and mistakes when pups start playing big boy SEC football. OL has disappointed for a few years now, and you cant expect Crowell to be another Lattimore or Dyer.

#1 recruits don't get special treatment

June 18th, 2011
10:12 am

Thought I would pass this on from a team trainer earlier this week….

On Monday….
Workouts under S&C began Monday. The new freshman lift in the mornings and the veterans in the afternoon. The core lifts on Monday were bench press and squats. They had to get 30 reps at 70% of their max. Isaiah Crowell could not finish the lifting or the running and drew Coach T’s wrath. Ken Malcome could not finish with the veterans.

On Tuesday….
The core lifts were close grip inclines and leg presses. The most obvious leader in the weight room is Christian Robinson. Bruce Figgins came in great shape. The most impressive of the new players is clearly John Jenkins. He is very strong and is in great shape. He will be the first new player moved to the veterans workouts. Crowell continues to struggle and was the only player who couldn’t finish Tuesday. He threw up more than once.

It Ain't Rocket Science

June 18th, 2011

Jimmy 1,

I don’t expect Crowell to have a great influence to start the year for sure. He has a learning curve and it would be foolish to expect him to be the next great back until he adapts to college ball and his job on the team. Lattimore was thrown into the fire right away by Spurrier because he is a pure athletic wonder at RB, but he was also beat up at the end of the year, because he was used so much. Crowell, will not suffer from that. The OL line is low on experience but if they increase their learning curve in camp, they have the physical tools to be good. I think our defense has all of the physical tools to be great also. We will certainly have the DL folks that should worry any team that faces them. These are some big, strong, and fast kids, that are eager to make up for last year as well prove that they belong in the SEC.
With the physical talent UGA has, it will be a matter of certain individuals proving themselves early and applying that talent to their position. I still feel UGA will get 9 wins this year, and possibility 10 if they really put in the effort and work it takes.
I believe our coaching staff has been rejuvenated as well, both by having a decent supportive schedule, and the recruits they have coming in. I know they can coach and I think they will.

Thats probably a good guess, or a safe one anyway. I would submit that SC has to have a better year than they did last year (because I am convinced that at least 2 or 3 teams in the east will) to win it, and nobody can tell me how they have improved in the offseason, when most expert are saying they are reshuffling both lines and the defense as a whole is replacing a lot of key players. I don’t see it. Somebody feel free to show it to me on paper. I can name how Georgia , Tn, are likely to improve. Newbie might not have a better record down there, but UF isn’t going to just go away. I just think thier margin of winning the east last year was razor thin and the rest of the division should improve by a larger percentage than that (for obvious issue that you can point to and speculate about being addressed)

Next season and next decade will take care of itself.

And come on!.Stafford and Moreno were good but that type pairing happen all the time. They were not so incredible special that they could overcome 3rd string linemen playing. Stafford and Moreno were together for 2 years. In 2007, do you not remember the difference between winning the East and not? Ky missed a 30 yr FG. (might have also been the difference in winning a NC or not, but thats pure speculation. Heck, U Meyer had Tim Freaking Tebow and couldn’t even win the east that year. In 2008 they didnt win the East because they couldnt beat Tim freaking Tebow and as I recall Stafford and Moreno were asy much to blame for that loss as anyone.

AltamahaDawg

NONE of that have anythig to do with the statement that Richt has not shown any reason to believe he can win the east this year. aside from the fact that the east is very winnable for anyone, he has either won or tied for that east half the years he has been at Georgia. And I’m pretty sure the SEC as a whole, and the east , has been as competitive as it has been at any point in a georgia Coaches career. But no, he has not won a NC, so clearly he can’t win the wide open East this year.
