Dawgs winning the East: Pie in the sky or realistic?

Catching up on my Bulldogs reading after a few days off and away from the blogosphere, I came across the roundtable discussion of UGA football posted at College Football Zealots.

We’ve actually already dealt here in the Blawg with several of the questions posted, including which game is more critical for Georgia to win: Boise State or South Carolina? (To recap: While the Boise game is an opportunity for Mark Richt’s program to get back on the national radar, the South Carolina game a week later looms much bigger for the Dogs in terms of their SEC East hopes.)

But the last question in the roundtable is something I’ve actually been pondering lately as I play out in my head just how likely the more optimistic scenarios are for the 2011 Dogs.

The question: Athlon Sports has rated the Dawgs at #14 and Phil Steele has them at #9 in their pre-season polls. Both have Georgia winning the SEC East and playing in the Capital One Bowl. What needs to happen for Georgia to live up to these lofty expectations?

Well, in terms of wins and losses, obviously, beating South Carolina would be a big step in that direction. You can draw up various scenarios in which Georgia could win the SEC East after losing to the Gamecocks (all of which would require the Dogs to win in Jacksonville), but that definitely would be doing it the hard way.

Are the elements in place for such a season? That’s tougher to gauge. Aaron Murray certainly looks like the class of the conference when it comes to quarterback, the schedule is pretty favorable once you get past those first two games, and Isaiah Crowell has a lot of folks excited. But he still has to run behind a questionable offensive line. And while the arrival of John Jenkins should make Georgia’s defense tougher up front, the secondary still has me worried. And then there are the questions about who steps up at wide receiver to replace A.J. Green and Kris Durham.

Plus, of course, whether the team is going to be able to rise to the occasion in the fourth quarter in big games, something that all too often hasn’t happened recently.

A little luck wouldn’t hurt, either.

So what do you think has to happen for Georgia to live up to those “lofty expectations”? Is this pie-in-the-sky thinking, or do Richt’s 2011 Dogs really have what it takes to be a contender?

The Boise game will have a large impact on the SC game. Win the first and you probably will beat SC. However, lose the first and you probably will lose the SC game….it’s call MO.

Probably depend on Murry though.

alshon jeffery will win the game for SC in Athens. i’m thinking 140 yds and 2 td’s. UGA had no answers for him last year, and this year’s secondary looks as shaky, esp in the 2nd game of the year. Boise will look to exploit this as well, and the BSU game will be close. I’m expecting both games to be high-scoring affairs…

I think that you will find Conner Norman, a walk on, eventually as our current day Jake Scott or Scot Woerner. This kid may not have the physical assets of our other defensive backs, but he flat out knows where to be on very play. Reminds me of Len Hughes in the 60’s but with better physical skills.

I a pretty sure the secondary would all play better if he was back there at safety, probably free safety.

I must be the only Dawg fan worried about Aaron Murray. I think he really needs to improve on his accuracy from last year if he is going to be as good as we all hope he is. Just seems like too many times A.J., Durham, OC, or Aaron White were having to make great catches to pull in one of his passes. He needs to hit them in stride more consistantly and not hang them out to dry so much. Got A.J. and Durham both creamed the the Florida game last year. I’m just sayin…Go Dawgs!

I’ve said numerous times that I think South Carolina will win the East. UGA and UF still have way too many questions to be answered. That doesn’t mean that neither has a shot, but they will have to be MUCH better than last year.

Depends how you look at it…….

When Boise beats UGA by 2-3 td’s and the UGA goes on to win the East then that will mean Boise would own the SEC…

Oh but we already know they would, after all, Boise owns the ACC, Pac-12, WAC, Mtn. West, Big 12, and we know they would destroy any big east champ. Considering Alabama can’t beat Utah loses to 1-AA teams and Boise destroys Utah and destroys 1-AA teams then by virtue of recent games we can all see that it is more important for UGA to beat Boise.

But UGA will lose and lose bad, this will be embarrassing for the SEC and UGA. But thanks for letting Boise warm up with another scrimmage basically.

Really need to win both to gain momentum for the whole season. Both games are winnable but you need a little luck. Pre-season prep will go a long way in determining how well this team fares during the season. Richt has to get after it every day and work them till they are dog tired and have to suck it up to make it back to the locker room. Hitting and tackling live drills to the ground every day are a must. Dawgs can win it but will they we don’t know. However, the opportunity is there so how bad do they want it. Also, how well will SC handle the pre-season expectations??

Sitting here reading this article & I was thinking: Why do we keep discussing which game, Boise St OR SCar is more important to win?? What in the world has UGA football come to when we are EXPECTING to be 1-1 two games into a new season???!!!!! How in the world –or WHY in the world would & could we be realistically thinking of a 10-2 season when we drop a game the first two weeks? Seriously?? I say win them BOTH! I just hope the players have more confidence than everyone else does –if not it will be another L-O-N-G year.

I don’t have confidence in these coaches either. It seems to me that when Van Gorder was the DC, he kept UGA in a lot of games with the defense. I still do not buy into Bobo’s offense no matter how many points his teams averages. The question is can the offense make the big play when it needs to not how many points does the offense average? I think he runs the same plays over and over and refuses to stick with the run first which wears down the defense. I believe in running the I formation more where the FB blocks and the TB runs behind the FB. The spread offense seems to get you down the field but not into the end zone when you get near the 10 yard line.

USCe is still the front-runner in the East. A good OLine, Ashlon, Lattimore and an absolutely loaded defense. People in Columbia are not only thinking SEC Championship but Nat’l Championship. All they have to do they feel is beat UGA in Athens. That is going to be one helluva game.

UGA has to win these first two games. This team needs some swagger or confidence atleast. The biggest thing to make the team live up to any hype fans or blogs might have is going on now in Athens. STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING. We saw the secondary and both sides of the line, run out of gas last year against Ark. and UF and AU. Tough games will drain you and it comes down to sure will, but if the body isn’t able to “hang” with the mind, it doesn’t matter. I believe UGA has the talent and the will, but they have to have the will now! The work done now will show up in the Dome and in Athens when USC comes to town.

First of all, throw out all of the stats against losing teams, they don’t count, they arn’t going to help figure out what’s wrong.

Now, once you’re looking at how Georgia did against WINNING TEAMS, according to cfbstats.com:
1) 12th in SEC in Turnover margin
2) 10th in SEC in Offen scoring
3) 11th in SEC in offen rushing
4) 12th in SEC Def 3rd down conversions
5) 8th in SEC in rush def

Finish in the top 3 in the SEC AGAINST WINNING TEAMS in offen rushing, def rushing, offen scoring, you have a chance.

It’s been noted by others before that beating Boise may set up the more dangerous scenario where we’re not desperate enough against SC. If we handle the first game we could forget the difference between an SEC defense and the rest of the world.I won’t be confident until we hark back to the the 2001-2005 era for at least one season. But I’m hopeful in any case. If we win the first two there’s no reason not to win the East. If we win the East there’s no reason not to win the SECC. Although the West has been riding high no team this year will match the power of Alabama and Auburn in 2009-2010. That doesn’t mean Bama doesn;t have a chance to win it all. They do.But it’s not inevitable.Like most others I’m very wary of our secondary and worried sick about Ashlon J.I think we have the right coach back there though. And if our line gets to the quarterback like they haven’t since 2007 it will make a world of difference.

Bill King –

In this short article you stated the following:

“beating South Carolina would be a big step in that direction” – Lost to them last year and probably will again this year.

“all of which would require the Dogs to win in Jacksonville” – UGA 3-21 vs UF in Jax are you serious?

“he still has to run behind a questionable offensive line” – And the way it is starting to patch together this year is even more questionable.

“the secondary still has me worried” – Correct. The only ones not worried are the opposing teams QB’s.

“the questions about who steps up at wide receiver to replace A.J. Green and Kris Durham” – There is noboby. Just wannabees.

“Plus, of course, whether the team is going to be able to rise to the occasion in the fourth quarter in big games” – They sure have not in the last three years. Why would they start now?

You answered your own question Bill – Totally pie in the sky with a glass of KoolAid to wash it down.

BIG JOE,

I went to school at USC, and I can tell you, no one is realistically thinking National Championship. USC has a tendancy to choke at the end of the year when pressure and expectations start to mount. They still do not have much depth which is also part of their late season falls. I think we will beat them, and come out on top in the East, but even if we don’t beat them we will still take the East with a win in Jacksonville.

truedawg

As far as luck goes, it’ll take the O line being healthy. no more ref’s like we had 2 years ago at home Vs LSU. The first two games will be close, USC always a close game. Anyone thinking SC or UGA will steam roll past the other hasn’t ever watched the game. winner will win with only 10 over the loser. Games is in Athens though, and UGA has a better D this year. I’ll pick UGA.
The Boise game will also be low scoring. Really a toss up, if the UGA secondary is better, and we can get a good pass ruch, UGA will when that game.

SoCarBravesFan

Talent wise UGA can’t compete with SC. If the secondary did a great day and locked down Jeffrey, then Lattimore will just do what he did last season to UGA. Sometimes a lot of talent doesn’t mean championships, but in this case it does. SC will win the SEC East again this season.

AceDawg

If Aaron Murray avoids his difficulties against teams from Florida, he could be stellar this year. I’m optimistic that the defense will improve, but the jury is out until the results are in. UGA should not worry about last year’s record, however, and should internally have high expectations. Starting the season worse than 2-0 would be a failure in my opinion, as the Dawgs have the power to beat Boise and should have motivation at home to avenge USC.

It is realistic. The Dawgs have as much chance of anyone in the East. The first two games are the hump with one connected at the hip to the other. If we start 2-0 winning the East will likely happen but I am afraid 1-1 won’t get it done.

The bigger question isn’t “can they” but “can he” meaning can Richt pull a successful season out of his butt? He has the talent but, he’s had it for the last several years. Yes they can, will they? Thats the $64K question.

Will you admit to us who your team is or do you just pull for whoever is winning the most each year?

It doesn’t make sense that a 6-7 team with so many draft picks would win their division next year.

Pie in the Sky. Look at UF after losing their superstars. UGA will finish 8-4 losing to Boise, USCe, UF, and Kentucky. USCe will finish 9-3 and go to the SECCG.

I love the Dawgs, and my four years in Athens were some of the greatest of my life. But after we failed to score a touchdown against Central Florida in our last time on the field, I think focusing on anything short of our next game is foolish. Let’s win in the Dome and then talk about the “future” (which would be game #2) when it is appropriate.

Fumbles forced, 3, 11th in SEC, SC had 10
Funbles recovered, 1, 12th in SEC, SC had 10
Sacks, 10, 7th in SEC, SC had 17
tfl’S, 33, 10TH IN SEC, SC had 43
3rd down conv, 12th in sec,
rush def, 8th in sec, sc 143 yard
red zone conv, 8th in sec, sc ranked 2nd

Boise fans are the most delusional on earth. ESPN will continue to hype them because they need something to show on Wednesday nights other than spelling bee replays.

I remember talking to a couple of Boise dorks in an Athens bar before the last game between the two teams. They were entirely convinced that UGA had never seen the likes of their all-world players. The game could have easily been 70-0 if Richt wanted it to be. Men versus boys. It’ll be closer this time, but the result will be the same. Then Boise State can crawl back to their hole and look forward to their rightful place in college football…in the Humanitarian/Toilet Bowl.

A lot of games can be won, if you’ll do well in 3 areas AGAINST WINNING TEAMS:

1- 4th Quarter
2- 3rd down
3- Red zone

These are all areas which UGA lagged in… The last few yrs they have lost games in the 4th qtr. UGA’s 3rd down conversion rate has been terrible –near last in the conference. The Red Zone has also been awful. And you disagree that improvement in these areas will not produce wins??? To enlighten you, anyone with common sense that knows the game of football can see this. You obviously do not.

You forgot about having a HC who didn’t have the Nads to go for it on 4th and inches inside the UCF 5 on the first drive of a meaningless bowl game. But hey every other team in the SEC is hoping that McGarrity gives him a lifetime contract because of all of his adopting work.

Georgia Tech fans, before you talk junk, beat us twice in a row. When is the last time Georgia Tech did that? Ok that settles that. Now shutup. You couldn’t beat our 6-7 team last season.

Now, the last time we won an SEC title we didn’t have one stellar WR like A.J. Green. They worked together as a unit. We also used our TEs a lot with Leonard Pope (who saved a boy from drowning btw), and Martrez Milner. Well we have one of the best TEs in the country in Orson Charles and a good one in Aron White. Maybe Jay Rome can get some playing time. What I’m saying is, you don’t have to have a spectacular WR to win the SEC championship. I don’t think Auburn did last season. Use what you have and make the best of it. Just score.

Questions loom for the gators in 2011 as well

1.) Can Muschamp keep Weiss out of the luxury skyboxes and away from the AYCE Buffets during games?
2.) Will the Gainesville economy be able to handle the sudden surge in donut prices?
3.) Can Muschamp keep the gator players out of jail, especially Rainey who apparently was tight with the 4 b-ball players who got busted.
4.) Can Muschamp and Weiss decise on a QB between Murphy and Driscoll after Brantley loses at home to UT and gets booed into tears at home?
5.) Can Muschamp prevent Weiss from eating the spear that the FSU guy throws at the beginning of the game?

Serious questions that must be answered.

Bill seems to be taking a cautious approach like most of us are. If the defense is a lot better, that will more than make up for losing 3 of our 4 top playmakers on offense from last season.

I don’t think we will be great, because of the lack of proven playmakers, other than Charles and Murray. If Marlon Brown or somebody steps up and becomes a big time WR, and on defense, the secondary is steady, UGA could be very good.

I’ve been a dawg all my life, but if any of you really think UGA has a chance against Boise you’re delusional homer fans. Last time Boise came UGA was ranked higher and Boise was barely 1-A. SO QUIT THINKING THAT’S SOMETHING TO HANG YOUR HAT ON!!

Last time Their QB had the flu and gave 6 turnovers in the first half. It wasn’t UGA that caused that, it was Boise imploding.

THIS TIME, they have the best QB in the country, not to mention one that has broken several NCAA records. Not to mention they have beaten Oregon twice, TCU, and VT all on the road. That is 4 conference champs all top 5-15 ranked, all were 1-2 loss teams.

Boise this time has a QB and defensive line that will pound the dawgs into submission unless MR does something drastic. I have a bad feeling about this game. Also, if you listen to any blog where people have to use real accounts and names, 95% are not optimistic, they realize what were up against.

As far as the last game vs Boise goes, You Boise fans spin the truth to make yourselves feel better about the beatdown. Both teams were ranked in the top 25 and the line on the game was only 5-6 points. Boise sucked – they were like a high school team compared to UGA. Zabransky was scared for his life, but that was far from your only problem that day. The biggest problem was that UGA had vastly better football players at practically every position. The sad part is that Boise probably went on to win the rest of their games that year, which would have put the in the top 25 when they wouldn’t have been in the top 8 in the SEC.

Close game but UGA by 12
SC picked to win the EAST? They barely won last year vs the Dawgs in SC this year in Athens, LOST TO KY. IF SC is favored, then so is UGA and UF.
I see the UF HC and OC bumping heads soon after the first few games. I alos don’t see a pro style offense working without a good RB which UF doesn’t have a big powerful back to go through tackles. The last time we lost to Vandy was 2006. The last time we lost to Kentucky was 2009. Does that make you haters feel better? Every teams loses to teams they have no business losing to. Alabama lost to the perennial powerhouse Lousiana-Monroe in 2007 and then Utah in 2008. But I guess that’s ok.

For Richt, it is definitely South Carolina, because if he fails to win a weak SEC East two years in a row, he should be fired. I think we’ll beat SC since the game is in Athens and our defensive line should play better than last year.

Brantley isn’t Brady. He seems alot like Garcia. Looks good at practice. I will say CW is a great OC. But I think it will be 2 years before UF can put a team out to get to 10 plus wins. The East is down. I mean is has to be for USC to be picked to win anything. I think UGA will have to ride on the defense til the running game can get going for UGA to have a shot at the EAST. luckily we have Sc at home and Miss state at home. We play the weaker west teams this year. That is why I think UGA will when the EAST this year, after that who knows…GO DAWGS

Too many question marks for this team to win the East. The biggest might be the q.b. Murray has yet to prove he can win a big game, and he has a tendency to start slow, and with this defense and secondary, starting slow agains Boise&S.C will be a disaster.Couple that with a patchwork O.L that has 2 starting tackles that didn’t play the position last year, and you have a huge problem. How UGA can constantly be so desperate on the O.L. year after year is a testiment to RIcht and his staff doing a terrible job recruiting for need and not for top 10 classes. Gardner and Richt have no clue on how to build a team with depth at every positon. The secondary is in the same shape as the O.L., and the running back postion and wide recriver position has no playmaker between them. How could this pahetic staff be so bad at evaluating talent, and getting out recruitied year after year for the positions that need help. All you kool-aid drinkers talk about how great Richt is at recruiting his top 10 classes every year, but if that is so, how does UGA have no talent or depth at so many postions? O.L, R.B, W.R, lb, cb, and safety. Total joke, and this team will not win the SECE. The NIGHTMARE in Athens continues.

Georgia’s $64,000.00 Question (actually worth much, much more than $64,000.00) is “:whether the team is going to be able to rise to the occasion in the fourth quarter in big games.”

That one question is bigger than questions about the O line, the secondary, the running game, the receivers, and game-time coaching decisions all combined.

Georgia has failed to play with that old Junkyard Dogs spirit the past few years.

The one true question is whether old Father Joe Tereshinski and his trusty Novice Thomas Brown have exorcised the “Underperformance” demon from the Bulldogs’ football program.

If they have, whatever personnel woes or shortcomings that befall Georgia notwithstanding, we’ll do great. Otherwise, …

Bill good article I wonder myself how this team will perform, the schedule certainly is in our favor. The key will be Boise if we had them the 3rd or 4th game I think we blow their doors off , however we will be using a new OL in their very first game as a unit..I can’t help but think our blocking timing won’t be very crisp so I see us in a pretty low scoring game. If anyone scores 30 I’ll be floored if Boise does well it won’t be good for the Dawgs. I also think if we can pull out the victory we can beat hell out of USCe, we will go into that game with confidence and if we do that and Gracia is the QB and we have half a pass rush I think we win…but if we lose to Boise I think it will be a rough row to hoe. Go Dogs!

I just finished reading all the comments. It’s a riot that we (Gators & Dawgs) continue to bash each other and try to reason why OUR program will be better this year. Truth is we BOTH sucked last year and have no idea how our teams will fare this year. It’s just wishful thinking as we both have tons of questions that cannot and will not be answered until the season starts. Right now, South Carolina is the team to beat in the East yet so many UGA faithful continue to give them no credit. I sure hope your players don’t do that or they will get absolutely demolished at home. Spurrier will not hesitate to hang a number on UGA given the chance.

With our speed & size we stack up good against Boist St. Their offense may be good in their pansy league but I don’t expect them to score much agianst UGA. UGA offense will look average against the Boise ‘D’. DAWGS win.
SCar will be a bigger challenge — I expect our ‘D’ to do well but they may run out of steam if our Offense sputters all day. Our Offense will sputter at some point because of the lack of depth at O-Line & the SCar Defense is pretty darn good.

COLUMBUS, OH (AP) After signing with agent Drew Rosenhaus, Terrelle Pryor ended speculation on his future today.

“I know y’all been waiting, but I’ve decided,” the former Ohio State quarterback said pulling an Ohio State cap from underneath a table and placing it on his head. “I’m going to sign with THE Ohio State University and bring back the Big Ten title to C-bus, y’all.”

Pryor appeared relieved as agent Rosenhaus described the lucrative terms of Pryor’s contract with reporters. Pryor will sign a one-year deal with the Buckeyes with a guaranteed salary of just $23,000 in total cash value. The real value in the contract will come from a series of incentives and marketing deals valued at anywhere from $0-$40,000.

I think Georgia has a legitimate shot at the East. Not a legitimate shot at the title, mind you, but a legitimate shot at the East. Florida is in a rebuilding year with a new head coach which is always tough, and USC, well you never know about them especially with the love/hate quarterback. On the other hand they do have Darth VIsor as head coach and he owned UGA for years and has now built yet another SEC contender from scratch.

Whoever emerges from the West will cake walk over the East winner just like Auburn did last year.

Look, Georgia won’t win championships until it gets back to its roots. Right now the offense is pass first oriented and it’s been shown repeatedly the playcalling is questionable. With the loss of WE3 at RB, the Dawgs clearly lack the depth required to run the ball successfully in the SEC. If true freshman IC could have beat out veteran WE3, there would be much more confidence and respect for the running game by opponents. But now IC has no real competition at the position and will be given the position and if he does not perform beyond his years there won’t be a serious running game at UGa. To the kool-aid guzzling goons who say the running game got better when WE3 left are just plain lying to themselves and don’t know too much about the importance of a real running game. Even the Evil Genius, Spurrier pounded UGa with the run last season and went on to win the SEC East. A pass first, pass happy attack at UGa is not the traditional Georgia way. I guess that’s why the only all-American candidates for the Dawgs this year are the punter and placekicker. To win the SEC East, Georgia must get back to running the ball but it will require a change in philosophy, which will ultimately require a coaching change. To the kool-aid drinking Marxists, ten years of uneven results is long enough. A pathetic 2-8 record versus Florida is unacceptable and if the current coaching staff doesn’t know how to win in Jacksonville then I WANT them to lose again this year so they can be relieved of their failing duties. Former Buckeye coach John Cooper won most of his games at the OSU, but went a pathetic 2-10 versus Michigan. He had to go and the OSU now dominates its series with Michigan now. Damn right I’m a Hater, because I Hate seeing the Dawgs lose big games year after year. I want the Dawgs to win and if heads have to roll for UGa to win consistently, then………SO BE IT !!!

Best comment of the day! Both teams have made efforts to correct their issues from last year. This is a new year and new attitude for UGA and UF. You cannot use the spring games to analyze how these teams will perform during the season. I am quite confident that both teams won’t be as bad as some people seems to think. Although USCe won the east last year, they didn’t do it in convincing fashion. I’m not quite sold on the fact that they have more talent than UF or UGA. Remebr UF has been ranked pretty high in recruiting for the last few years and UGA hasn’t done so bad in itself. I think that UGA does have something to prove this year. Does that mean that that hunger will translate into wins? Maybe or maybe not, but it will mean that they will play a lot harder than they have the last few years. Are they capable of winning the east? yes they are. UF on the other hand has tons of talent and it would be foolish to think that they will be down for long. I look forward to the season and maybe all the talk will cease, because the fact is, none of knows what’s going to happen. Sometimes one lucky play changes the outcome of a game. Luck always trumps talent.

bham dawg good question. Everything will hinge on how well Brantley does running a pro-style offense. He ran one when he was in HS and was the Gatoraid player of the year and recruited by Weis. The D was young last year and at least 5 true freshmen started at various times from one of the top recruiting classes ever. The schedule will be a killer though. Bama at home, LSU on the road, Auburn on the road and then UGA (all in October). As a lifelong (58 years) Gator I will be happy with 8-3. The winner of the UGA/SC game will win the East.

I don’t want to start thinking about BSU yet. I want to see a summer go by with no one suspended and no one injured in practice. The more starters UGA has on the field at the Ga Dome the better their chances. A little luck and some Zebras not making stupid calls would help too.

I think what is going to happen is that after this year everyone will stop talking about Richt being gone and he will sign a new deal because he succeeded in turning things around. I think Phil Steele knows what he is talking about. One of the first posters said that Alshon Jefferies will win for SC in Athens. That’s assuming that their head case QB has time to throw to him. Our secondary may or may not be weaker than last year but our front seven is going to be better. Dawgs win the east and LSU who wins the west. Too many questions for Bama with no experience at QB. Dawgs beat LSU for the SEC title. Mark it down.

Florida will look on offense like UGA looked on defense last year. UGA didn’t have the players to run a 3-4 defense last year and UF will be trying to run a pro style offense with mostly spread players. After a year or so of recruiting the type of players they need they will be back. This year I think they struggle because of that and lose about 3-4 games. Not downing UF, great program, just trying to be realistic.

ga gator

June 14th, 2011

kerryb, the difference from this coaching staff is they will utilize talent instead of trying to force Brantley to run the option. They have the players for the positions just not the experience. Not saying they will win the East either but Trey Burton will be a Beast in Weis’s offense as will Demps. Remember, that a pro-style does not have to be a traditional I formation. The Patriots run mostly out of the shotgun which is the offense that Weis left in place. Should be interesting.

ga gator, I think Richt has always had a set. You don’t win that many games in the SEC without them. I think what has happened to him is that some of his assistant coaches got too comfortable thinking that he would not fire them and let him down. He finally showed that he would fire someone if they are not producing results. Every thing I have been reading about him says that he has gotten tougher. I think he has been P.O’d about the last two years. the last two years was the result of a talent gap at QB in 2009 after Stafford left and a DC that was not doing the job. Last year was a Red shirt QB and a brand new defense. This year they turn the corner.

I am more confident this year that I have been in quite some time.

UGA does not play the best two teams in the SEC and will catch UT, AU and UF all in down years. Tech is Tech, a program that beats us about once every decade and they have their quota for this decade.

Miss State, USC and Boise State are probably the three best teams we play and we play them all in the state of Georgia, two at home.

We have the best quarterback in the SEC and the best recruiting class in America.

If UGA does not win at least ten games this year, I will be shocked and Coach Richt will most likely do the honorable thing and resign.

It is amuzing how people worry about losing AJ Green. He was “great” because he made acrobatic catches. When your receivers make acrobatic catches it means 1) the coverage was very good; 2) it was a lousy pass; or 3) the receiver was out of place and had to compensate. So let’s have fewer of those spectacular catches, okay?

The difference is that Shula and Zook never proved they could get it done. They could have fired either one of them in thier first few years, and there was never a reason to believe otherwise. SSIgator is just trolling…I guess nothing going on down there tonight. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. I heard a local radio host here in Charlotte talk about Stafford when he was covering the Dawgs. He said he was a real piece and that his teammates didn’t even like him. I don’t know how true that is but if it is I can see why UGA didn’t perform to the hype in 2008 and with one year QB’s since it makes sense that it has continued to slide.

I’ve heard recent comments about the cancers that were on the team that are now gone. I really do hope that there are some true leaders there now and that they are ready to step up. Sounds like it but we have heard that before. I am happy to hear of Murray’s work ethic and I think that can’t be anything but a good thing.

I am also happy to hear that McGarity is giving Richt what he needs to succeed. Why on earth would an AD not allow the head coach to implement a nutrition program at a program like UGA. I also think that McGarity will work at opening the week before the UF game so that UGA is more prepared. It seems that UF has had that open week for years and I think it has helped most years.

still@thebar. Assuming you heve ever even been to that game, you are telling me it sucked the whole time you were there? Wow. I’m sure everybody around you was just thrilled.

Looking at 4-8, wins at Vanderbilt, New Mexico, Coastal, and Miss. that’s it for the win column. Not going to win these 8: Aub, Tech, Fla, South Carolina, Mississippi St, Tennessee, Boise, Kentucky.

Georgia has a realistic chance of winning the East. Only South Carolina has more experienced talent among contenders. South Carolina plays Arkansas, and Georgia plays Ole Miss; otherwise the schedules are the same (except for home field advantages). Those games may be the difference maker. It’s difficult to predict how Florida will be performing by the last weekend in October.

SSIgator, YOU lost freinds in nam? I will openly admit I had you completely wrong. Usually a pretty good judge of these things. I would have bet anything that you were not older than 25 or so.

Since we’re in the off-season, wouldn’t this be the perfect time to take an in-depth look at UGA and have a serious discussion about the problems at UGA and why the arrest rate of players is the highest in the country? it’s common knowledge that UGA is a party school, but have any dawgtard players every actually graduated with a real degree? Jan Kemp exposed the school and the coaches almost three decades ago, but there is no sign that anything has improved; if anything, the arrest rate shows that things are getting more outrageous every year while the clueless Mark Richt has absolutely no control over his players. And then there is the infamous “red panties” incident that will haunt UGA for decades.

UGA has become a major embarrassment to all Georgians, and we want some answers starting now.

Yeah Stacey there are a ton of them getting arrested….like none in over 240-something days? I’m pretty happy with these Dawgs these days. I think Coach T has them too tired to go party it up.

If their are ways to over-spin the Iranian Uranium enrichment centrifuges to destruction via software, surely there is a way to categorize posts as on-topic and dump the others into a separate box for those with altered sensibility to enjoy.

We’re gonna lose to Tech?

Where does time go? I didn’t realize we had gone through another decade since ‘08 . . .

AltamahaDawg -

That was back in the day of the lottery – for the draft board, not to win money. I lucked out and got a pretty high number. Some of my friends were not so lucky and they never returned. I would have thought this country would have learned a lesson from that war, but like they say, history does have a way of repeating itself.

As A Gator Alum it is embarrassing to see all your post on here SSIgator. Why aren’t you on the gator boards talking about our football team. I can tell you what are good sites to talk about Gator football if you would like. Why do you waste your time and energy talking crap about a team that may end up to be pretty decent this year and has a very good chance of beating us. Last time I checked John Brantley is still our QB and our head coach hasn’t even coached a game before. Pretty sure we have quite a few issues ourselves. Do you really have nothing better to do? Is this site the most excitement that you get in your life?

Just saying!

I think you missed my point. Your post have always lacked a certain maturity, if you ask me. I have always assumed you not over 25. Your brand of sophomoric (attempted) humor is not often assosiated with 50 yr old men.

…“all of which would require the Dogs to win in Jacksonville” – UGA 3-21 vs UF in Jax are you serious?

First contested November 6, 1915
37–0, UGA
Number of meetings 89 (according to UGA) or
88 (according to UF)
Most recent meeting October 30, 2010
34-31 (OT), UF
All-time series Georgia leads 47–40–2 (according to UGA) or
46–40–2 (according to UF)
Largest victory November 7, 1942
75–0, UGA

And spare me the UGA fans “living in the past” crap, because it doesn’t matter if you’re talking about yesterday, 5 days ago, 5 years ago or 50 years ago, if you’re not talking about today or tomorrow you’re living in the past. So if we’re going to talk about the history of the series let’s talk about the COMPLETE history, not just a selective slice.
