Dogs could make or break Boise State’s season

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

We all know what’s in it for the Dogs in opening against Boise State in the Georgia Dome. The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game is a “Hey, remember us?” game, a chance for Mark Richt’s program to make a statement that it’s still relevant on the national scene. Win or lose, at least UGA will be in the spotlight.

But as College Football News notes in its 2011 Boise State preview, the game could mean a whole lot more to the Broncos, who’ve spent the past few seasons trying to convince the college football world they routinely belong in the national championship conversation.

As CFN puts it, “The opening day battle with Georgia in Atlanta means everything” for Boise State. “Win that, and it’ll be another year of talking about whether or not the Broncos belong in the national title chase considering they’ll almost certainly be the favorites in the rest of the 11 games. … If they beat Georgia in the opener the expectations and the season changes; the national title will be in play.”

The Broncos’ other important game on Nov. 12 against TCU, probably for the Mountain West title, “might turn out to be just as big,” CFN says, “but the season for Boise State, and for college football, might hinge on the performance in front of the hostile crowd in Atlanta. Last year, the Broncos were able to do it against Virginia Tech on the road and the national title expectations kicked in. The same might be true with a win over the Dawgs.”

Beating Boise State would get an important season off to a great start for Richt, but the fact is that for Georgia’s overall season hopes the SEC game a week later in Athens against South Carolina is more important.

But if Boise State loses to the Dogs, the argument could be made their ultimate hopes for the season are toast.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to which team wants it more, because that’s likely to be the Broncos.

But as Richt likes to say, no pressure.

JT2!

The Texas Rangers made Major League Baseball look awfully good with their classy gesture drafting paralyzed Diamond Dog Johnathan Taylor. Dawgs Online was exactly right saying the Bulldog Nation now has a new favorite American League team. Meanwhile, to find out how you can still donate to the Johnathan Taylor Fund, check out Georgiadogs.com.

DANTE, WE HARDLY KNEW YE

Georgia baseball signee Dante Bichette Jr. of Orlando, son of former Rockies outfielder Dante Bichette Sr., was one of seven UGA current players and 11 signees picked in the MLB draft. It’s apparent now that he’ll never don the Red and Black, and you can’t blame him for taking an estimated $700,000 signing bonus straight out of high school.

“I told the coaches that if I went in the first round, I was going to go pro,” Bichette told the Athens Banner-Herald. As for UGA, he said, “I couldn’t have picked a better school to work with. The way they handled it was perfect. They even told me that if I went in the first round, I should go play pro ball. They’re behind me 100 percent. I’ll always be a Dog in my heart.”

Bichette is a big loss for Perno but you can’t blame him-$700,000!!

Boise plays 2 games a year. We are 1 of the 2 for 2011. How do they even get considered for anything? How do you judge/rate a football team that plays 9 or 10 patsies and 2 or 3 good teams?

Richt has to win this game. Period.

For the Dawgs, the Boise game is huge. It’s US beating someone with some name recognition. For them ,beating us will be written up as beating a once proud program, a middle of the pack SEC team. Now, I don’t feel that way, but the National guys will write it that way….and most of you would agree.

The odd thing is, Boise plays the teams that are in their conference, and tried to schedule BCS teams for their non-conference games. Look, over the last 4 seasons, we’ve won in 2 games against Oregen, 1 against Oregon State, the epic opener last season against Virginia Tech, and you’ve all seen what we did against Oklahoma, and TCU in the 2 Fiesta Bowls. I admit that our conference schedule is not as tough as Georgia’s…. but, I don’t see any of the BSC conferences inviting us to play in their conference either. I also don’t see Georgia accepting a Home/Home against BSU – always a 1 and done…. We’re coming to your home again. Yep, last time we were there, you kicked our butts. It was embarassing. The Broncos have developed, ALOT, since 2005. That was 6 years ago – and the experience and talent we bring now is a whole different game. No smack-talk here – just saying that Boise State is trying to schedule BSC teams, and when we get one to play us (usually at THEIR field because they won’t come to Boise), we have a proven track record of coming out a winner. This is a huge game to both teams…. the difference is, EVERY game is a loser go home game for BSU….. that’s the beauty of the BCS system. Boise is foreced to go undefeated in order to get considered for anything. So, although our schedule isn’t as tough as yours, the expectations are also much greater if we want a big bowl game.

Boise just won’t be able to handle our defense guys. I’m telling you. They’ve never seen a defense with as much size and strength as we have. Not even Virginia Tech. And the speed. Oh my goodness. Jenkins and Geathers are going to have a field day on Thomas Byrd (Boise State’s center). Kwame did Ben Jones on G-day and Ben Jones is one of the best, grittiest centers in the country. Just imagine what he’ll do to someone almost half his size. Not to mention our linebackers with Ogletree, Jarvis Jones, Cornelius Washington and Robinson. I heard our secondary is getting better too at covering like a blanket. Watch out.

DawginLex

Lots of folks are predicting a shootout type of game but I don’t see it.
Boise’s D-line has 7 returnees that re really good. Our O-line is bigger but this could be quite a test.

Our D-line is much bigger than their O-line and our LB’s are fast and athletic enough to mask some secondary concerns/inexperience.

I see this as a 20-14 type of game. Our kicking game is much better than theirs and that could be the difference.

I tend to agree with most everything you said…we down here in the South are very proud of the SEC, and as you know it is the toughest conference year in and year out to play in.

I think very highly of BSU, and wish you all the luck other than against our DAWGS!!

With all the “playoff” format being discussed, I think that is something that would help your team out tremendously, as we have all seen how your coaches have STRONG game plans against the biggest named teams in the country.

Hope it is a good game in ATL…best of luck to you.

Why? Beacause they beat a team that lost to UCF in the Liberty Bowl and finished 6-7? Is Richt now selling his KoolAid outside of his little kingdom in Athens?

I think Ben’s comments are very fair. There isn’t much they can do about their situation. They have to play their conference opponents and have a hard time getting the big boys to play against them. As a dawg fan it is frustrating though to know you have a gauntlet of TOUGH SEC slugfests every week, when you see other teams only have 2 tests a year and get National consideration because of it. I don’t have the answer, no real way to make it fair I guess. We can’t all play the same schedule.

As a fan I know that realistically we are rebuilding our offense, which is a disadvantage for us. However, Boise will still have to out score us to win, and with our improved defense that will prove difficult for them to do. Even if Richt decides that we are going to settle for field goals instead of using his proven TE’s, we should be difficult to beat. Should being the key word.

Ben – you need to lose that conversation. You have tried to play teams – you mean you play teams on your terms and nothing else. Why did you turn down the Nebraska options? Don’t want to hear about Boise anymore. Want to be beat you and be done with you. There is no more upside to playing Boise. If we win – we should have and if we lose we should have.

I think Boise fans are aware of UGA’s talent on D. Obviously their strength is their front 7 with pure size and speed. Very scary. If they can shut down Boise’s offense they have a chance. The only problem is UGA needs to bring some offense. Boise State has an intelligent quick defense that is surprisingly good. Their D-line is very impressive and they came out and smacked Va Tech in the mouth last season. I don’t know if UGA can recover offensively if BSU comes out red hot like that. I’m hoping for a good game.

Bronco Billy, I remember 2005 all too well , the Boise State fans in Athens predicting an easy victory,When told they would be leaving the stadium losing by 5 touchdowns they laughed and continued to boast.Last year you faced an ACC team which lost to james madison and was embarrassed bu Stanford in its bowl game. Virginia Tech played poorly shot itself in the foot on multiple occasions and still only lost by a field goal . I believe Georgia is a horrible physical match up for Boise, bigger, faster and more depth on both sides of the ball. Boise could win this game if Georgia doesn’t bring its “A” game, if (and that could be a very large if)the dogs play well it will be a very long drive back to Idaho.

If THuga wins that first game you will have thought they just won the national championship (which by the way feels REALLY nice!!). There’ll be more barking and chest thumping than any fanbase ever displayed after just one game. You’ll start hearing predictions of a dynasty in athens!! All it takes is one win (and unfortunately for the rest of us, THuga has already built this into the greatest sporting event since the Olympics) for college football to begin hearing how THuga is the greatest team in college football history!! Give them the NC right then and there!!

And then usc south will come in and beat ‘em.

I think it will be a close, fairly low scoring game. It will turn on Murray’s ability to avoid critical mistakes and the quality of our kicking game. The defense will do its job in keeping it close. It is a huge game for UGA, too. That loss on a national stage with our expectations for improvement could drive a stake thru the heart of the team. You know we’ll be calling for the moving vans to pull in front of Richt’s house, and the rest of the season will be a swan song for this coaching staff if the SC game turns into a disaster.

I remember Georgia ran an unusual offense the last two years I saw them.

They ran most of their plays out of the old “I” formation but they were not a power team.

In fact, they threw the ball a lot out of it with lengthy drops and rolls, so our DBs will need to hold their coverages longer than usual. However, this should give our front some great opportunities for sacks and some scoops and scores.

The strength of Georgia’s team were the receivers, who often made amazing plays out of inaccurate or late throws, especially in the game Hawk coached against them.

The defense was adjusting to a new scheme and seemed to have the middle bottled up well in the games I saw, but had lots of problems tackling runners in space. This gives our type of offense many opportunities.

Georgia’s opponents didn’t pass much so I couldn’t tell how they are in pass coverage in the games I saw.

I also remember Georgia’s kickers were good, but I am not sure if they are returning.

My two cents.

Ben, Boise does not get an invite to a BCS conf. as they do not bring any money to the table. I’m not saying it is right but that is the way it is. It is not fear of their football team. If anything there is a fear that after the current coach and AD leaves the conf. will be stuck with an average mid major with a small TV market.

Yes this ia a big game for Boise a win over a SEC school especially won that has won the conf. in the past decade puts them in the national title race.

It should also be the biggest game of CMR’s HC career. I do not want to ehar from other fan that UGA was the team that opened the door for Boise. Boise is more important than Florida or GT this year.

Bronco Billy, I honestly think the only comparison to this year’s squad from last year’s is basic schemes. Our strength is better, players are bigger (even the PK put on nine pounds!) and the D has a year of Grantham’s defense under their belt. Our Achilles heel is our OC, IMO….but even that should be ok as long as our defense holds up.

BSU does play in a weak conf but as of late when they step out and play the big boys (VT, OK) they do surprisingly well. You cannot take them for granted. They score lots of points and what should worry dawg fans is GA is not playing good D and give up too many points. Jenkins, et al, is GA’s hope to beating Boise. I doubt GA will stop their QB from putting points on the board unless the D overwhelms Boise as it did when GA beat them in Athens. However, if the DC follows the same game plan as he did last season and lay back most of the time we’re dead meat.

Classy move by the Rangers drafting JT. Shame on the Braves.

Boise State carefully selected Georgia for this game. First, they play a weak schedule which tends to keep them out of the BCS championship game even if they go undefeated. Second, the SEC has won the last five BCS championships. To get into the BCS championship game, Boise needs to beat an historically strong SEC team. However, they dont want to play a strong team such as Alabama, LSU, Auburn or Fla. They want to play an SEC team they perceive as vulnerable such as Georgia to pad their scedule. I predict this will backfire on them and UGA wins 34 to 21.

I am already nervous about this game! It means so much to both teams. If the Dawgs lose Boise State has the argument that they deserve to play in the championship because they beat an SEC team, the hardest division there is. But if the Dawgs win with a lot of the nation watching that game it could mean great things!! GO DAWGS!!! Beat the Broncos!!

As a Dawg fan, I of course hope that we can beat Boise State. But I temper that optimism with the reality of our offensive line woes, which I think are hugely significant and will hold us back all season. Dawg fans need to brace for another underwhelming season, and frankly I hope that we’re able to keep it respectable against the Broncos and not get blown out, which is a real possibility.

UGA wasn’t a team who handled big games well last season.

South Carolina? Offense couldn’t score, or rush, and turnovers hurt.
Miss St? Offense couldn’t score.
Ark? Defense couldn’t get stops.
Florida? Too many turnovers. Defense couldn’t get stops.
UCF? Too many turnovers.

I think we win a sloppy game and it will be absolutely no indication of how our season will turn out. Boise is a poser football program and a phony. They wouldn’t last two weeks in the SEC. I’ll like the way our football program is headed when we can beat Florida and make it back to the SECCG.

This is a pointless game. We don’t need another pizz ant team on our schedule from a pizz ant conference. We already play Tech every year.

billy,
UGA returns the two best kickers in College, atleast each in top 5, not bragging, look it up. Also one of the top 5 return guys in all of college, if it comes down to special teams, UGA has the edge. The only way Boise wins this game is your QB has to make it in the air and hope that smaller line can hold off the Dawgs D long enough. The onlt soft spot on the UGA team is going to be secondary. but then it did look better toward the last part of the year, and have all returning back this year. Boise is a team that can beat you through the air, i hope it doesn’t happen but it Boise wins that will be what it takes

Last year it was the first year d coach & qb, year before it was turnovers and penalties. If Coach Richt continues to find ways to lose these important games, you have to think this is the end of the road for him, as nice of a guy as he is. So let’s hope he figures out how to right the ship.

I don’t think year 1, the Dream Team will be the difference. Look at Florida last year. Had a top 2 recruiting class, and struggled all season. These guys have to have some time to learn the system. So for now, the veterans have to step up. Georgia’s putting a lot of hopes on a lot of year 1 starters who don’t know Georgia’s system yet, that usually doesn’t work out.

Those of you who think Murray sucks clearly don’t know football. The guy was a FRESHMAN last year, had over 3,000 yards and carried the offense!!! He plays with a crappy O-Line, a crappy running game, a crappy defense that can’t force a 3 and out to safe its life, and idiotic coaching– and put up huge numbers despite ALL of that. Trust me we can win with Murray, be he’s gotta have help. Murray is like the only bright spot on this team.

AltamahaDawg

June 9th, 2011
12:56 pm

Briz, one thing to consider is that Georgia has had some pretty good teams in the past when they have not have the best O-line in the league. I’m sure a lot of other program could say the same thing. It’s probably going to take a couple more classes to get the line back to the point that most fans couldn’t really tell you how good or bad they really are, but they know they aren’t hearing about them and not too woried about it.

Better to have a dominating line of cource, but you “can” win with a very average Oline. Maybe not blow through the SEC but win a lot of games. What you can’t have is an average line AND a freshman QB, AND a first year defense AND various issue keeping your skill people actually on the field AND…….fill in blank. I think the small margins of UGA losses last yesar proves both point.

We could fix just 2 of those and still be ok/better with the exact same line. Fix 2 AND the Oline is only modestly better, and I think we are right there with anyone on our schedule.

Boise’s Offense really puts up points on ranked teams. But defense struggles.

Boise Averages against ranked teams: 32 on off, 32 on def
Georgia averages against ranked teams: 15 on off, 32 on def

So, Georgia will have to score at least 35 to win the game, and typically, Georgia only scores 15 or 16 against ranked teams.

Advantage Boise.

Why do you think you are going for the national championship? After meeting with the NCAA enforcement committee tomorrow to answer the charge of “lack of institutional control”, you probably will not even be playing in a bowl game for two or more years.
Yes, you did beat Va. Tech. last year, and they followed up that loss with an impressive loss also to a lower division team. For some reason, Tech. has trouble getting the season going each year.
I don’t know that you will face a bigger D line than UGA will throw at you this year. You have a great QB, but no matter who the QB is, if he can’t get the time to set up and find his receivers, he has to throw where he can, so that might be a problem.

Thanks to Ben for coming in here and offering an intelligent Boise fan POV. It’s nice to see that for every Ben, Boise has their own version of “Saint Simons” and his name is Bronco Billy.

Ben, you are welcome in here anytime and like most of the Georgia fans in here, I respect what you have to say and you are right, Boise doesn’t get a lot of folks who want to schedule them or go to the Smurf Turf in Idaho. And yep, this will be a home game for us.

You should have scheduled us last year when we had a new defensive scheme with no real personnel and our best offensive player on an unfair, 4 game suspension. While I fully believe your excellent coaching staff will prepare hard for this game, I think Richt and company know what’s at stake for us and need to make a statement in the worst way. Georgia needs this game for the sake of the entire program, Richt’s job and the conference, which is why I think we will win going away.

I would also say to you what’s been said already – the defense has been drastically upgraded this offseason. There was no Jarvis Jones, Kwame Geathers, Ray Drew or John Jenkins last year, and these guys are beasts. Alex Ogletree is now a sophomore and has a chance to become a first team all American at his position. Team speed kills and these guys will hit the way we did in the Sugar Bowl game with Hawaii.

I think Boise is Georgia’s biggest game in several years. Boise has enjoyed the “sneak” factor against most of the big names they have played and beaten. They are now in a different situation entirely. Rightly or wrongly they will probably be picked to win this game by a lot of, if not most, of the media. They will most certainly have the attention of Georgia’s players and staff. Georgia will have had as much time to prepare for them as vice versa. Richt’s teams no longer have any wiggle room for excuses. There is no reason not to see an highly motivated, energized Georgia team. Better even, go on some LSU or Arkansas blogs and spout something about them. I think they might just give you a little more than you want to handle this year. You add nothing to the UGA blogs as far as relevant discussion goes so maybe they will care about you over at those blogs.

OTTO: You are correct. It is indeed a very sad time at UGa when the only consensus All-American candidates the Bulldogs can proudly promote are the punter and place-kicker. Once upon a time we had consensus All-American candidates at RUNNING BACK on a yearly basis. Blame it on a neophyte OC and “head” coach that knows what the “hell he’s doing.” Which is cleaning UGa’s coffers of $3 million for a 6-7 season in 2010.

Fact is; it’s the opening game for a strong team from a weak conference and a weak team from a strong conferemce. Both need to go into the game to win it without all the hipe and BS about nation rankings. Play the game and let the chips fall as they may. Georgia needs to worry about one game at the time, forget about what could have been, and just take care of the business at hand. Coach Richt needs to realize that each year his buyout gets smaller so the noose is getting tighter as time flies by. Bottom line for him is, it’s time he s#!+s of gets off the pot.

Otto, it’s all well and good to pretend that everybody needs to have the “goal” of winning a national championship every year, but that’s a hope and not a goal, I don’t care what their mascot looks like.

Obviously everybody wants to beat Boise. And every game.

Obviously everyone understands that beating SC would be a pretty big factor in achieving the goal. Same goal every team in the league is going to have.

Dealing with the reality of things that your players can control is hardly admitting that sad times prevail. Give it several weeks into the schedule and I guarantee you every team in the league is going to be having that same conversation. They are now actually.

Boise in ATL

June 9th, 2011
2:40 pm

Let’s face it – anytime an OREGON, VA TECH or GEORGIA plays Boise St. – it’s put up or shut up for the Bronco’s.

So thanks to Georgia for playing us – you guys have nothing to gain in beating us – as you are supposed to – and everything to lose if you do not win.

As an ATL resident the last few years – I LOVE the passion for college football here. It is the same at BOISE – we talk, tweet, facebook and speculate about it year round. This is better than the NFL. ATL is the center for college football – just unbelievable!

ABOUT GEORGIA:
Since I have lived here in ATL – Georgia has had one good team.
I really thought Georgia was a better program – but have watched them struggle the last two years.
Georgia is NOT at a SEC Champion LEVEL – like you were in 2005.
Georgia has dropped to mid-level SEC – probably the #7 SEC team.

What has happened at Georgia?
It starts with the Leadership.
I think Georgia got complacent, lazy and undisciplined. You can make up all the excuses in the world – but guess what – all poor performing teams have excuses. Georgia has been passed by the majority of your own conference – and now is trouble. OK ST, Colorado, UCF???? These losses are not Georgia football. They are what they are – if one of those teams beats Georgia – it is an upset. If all beat Georgia – it is the state of the program.

Georgia became a collection of individuals- great athletes – that feel entitled – and forgot that it is the collective good of the team that counts.

How can you have a great team when at any given time – your best skill position athletes are suspended for silly stuff? Off the field matters – NO collective unity. This is not the Georgia program I expected to follow when we moved to ATL.

Your head coach sets the tone. I hope he is successful enough to stay at Georgia – as it appears he is a very good person.

ABOUT BOISE
NO – we are not as deep as premier SEC teams in size, speed and talent.
But we make up for it by being more talented and deeper than most give us credit.
We play as a team – and everyone knows their roles.
We have incredible focussed leadership.
We develop our talent and get players with tremendous upside.
It is about a collective effort – knowing your role – and executing as a TEAM – this is what we do well and that is why we have become a good program.

We understand that ONE loss against BCS opponent – we are DONE.
This FACT keeps us from being complacent, spoiled and entitled. We understand this – so the pressure we put on ourselves is huge.

ABOUT THE GAME:
Boise is going to win – the press will make you believe David has beaten Goliath.
However – that would be wrong.
Boise is legit TOP 15 – TOP 10.
Georgia’s program is coming off a bottomed out season – and should be a better program this year. but is not a TOP 25 program at this time.

I look at Georgia’s schedule – and see 4 teams right away that I would favor to beat UGA: Boise, South Carolina, Mississippi State and Florida. I also think UGA will be in a dog fight to beat Tennessee, Auburn and Tech.

All of this is strictly based on what I have witnessed about the last 3 years – watching and following the SEC while living in ATL.

I do wish Georgia great success – and maybe Georgia will take that leap back to being a top tier SEC program. Who knows – maybe this will be the year!

I could be wrong about my prediction – but it boils down to BOISE maximizes it’s potential. Georgia lost how to max their’s.

Expect a close game – good luck the rest of the season.

To all the Dog fans bringing up Boise State’s record vs. the Sec…it’s irrelevent. All of these losses came in between 2000 and 2005, before Boise State gained their dominance. As far as Georgia’s defense goes, TCU’s is better, and it’s something we’ve seen before. Georgia’s “A” game has been for a couple of years a very mediocre game, while Boise State has 26 wins the past 2 years. When Boise State beats Georgia, the doubt of Boise State’s legitimacy will still be there because everyone knows that Georgia is currently an SEC bottomfeeder.

Did Georgia bottom out in 2010? Can they make the leap back to top tier SEC in 2011. You can see the potential – but the same could be said every year about a bunch of schools.

What killed us last year was VA TECH losingn to James Madison the following week.

If Georgia goes on and loses to S. Carolina, Miss St and Florida – which I think is a very real possibility – then you will be correct. Which means beating Georgia is about like beating Ole Miss or Kentucky level of football.

If Boise State wanted to play in a respectable conference, it had the change but wimped out by moving to the Mountain West.

I’ve also wondered how the school has been able to develop a quality football program in a state without a lot of talent and so far from major population centers. Football and several other Bronco program were recently put on probation by the NCAA, which leads me to what I’ve suspected – improper recruiting practices.

Because both of these teams are fighting for respect, I expect a brutal game in the trenches and lots of hard knocks in the secondary. Can’t predict a final score, just a bruiser!

It’s real simple, lose to Boise that natives are restless….lose the following week to South Carolina and that is more than a good chance, and the natives will be calling for Mark Richts head on a stick before the first cool morning in the fall. Both games are must wins for Georgia. If the fans don’t see it that way, then they deserve everything Marky brings their way.

Really? As in are you REALLY that stupid?

Let’s talk about Hershall Walker!!! Boise has never had a Hershall Walker – so no way Boise ST can beat Georgia!

Here is reality – what matters is recent trends – what has happened the last couple of years – and what is the current state of the program.

If OK STATE alone beats UGA – then it is an upset.
IF OK STATE, COLORADO, KENTUCKY, UCF beat Georgia – well those games were not upsets – they are the state of your program.

Not picking a fight here – but 2005 is irrelent. 2007 is irrelevent. UGA has been irrelevent and a NO show the last two seasons.

Tell me – over the last 2 years – how many games did Georgia lose in which they were favored?
TEll me – over the last 2 years – how many games when Georgia was the underdog – did they win?

Fact is – Georgia is in the parity pack – has tremendous upside – but has under performed.

Maybe this year will be the year Georgia can leap back to being respectable. It could happen.

But let’s do not bring up irrelent stuff from years ago when it is current state that matters.

Football has rules about a team wearing a jersey that is close to the color of the ball, the same rule should apply to the fielld. But asside that, a team isn’t going to give up a 95K-110K home game to come play in front of 50k. Financially it would be a disaster.

Doesn’t Richt see this stuff?! What a strange, odd, bizarre and frustrating program. The personnel decisions, the coaching hires, the play calling, the recruiting, the losses, just about everything. Georgia is going to score some on us – we will score some on Georgia.
2 keys for Georgia:
How much will your defense have improved over last year in understanding and executing the 3/4?
Will Georgia have a functional and consistent O-Line?
If Georgia has not improved in these areas – game over.

Boise State
Strike wide, strike deep, strike short, keep Georgia’s defense off balance and on the field.

How did UGA go 6-6 in the SEC?
I thought WDE was War Damn Eagle?
I am pretty Sure Tech, Colorado, La. Laf, and Idaho St are not SEC teams so HTF did UGA go 6-6 in the SEC? 6-6 in the SEC means UGA played and Beat itself or lost to itself.
Damn now I am think UGA fans are right when the say WDE/ Auburn people are dumb.

You wouldn’t have won the Mountain West, WDE. TCU would have DESTROYED you, and you probably would have lost to San Diego State. You didn’t lose all 7 games in the SEC either. You lost to UCF and Colorado, who are both assuredly inferior to Boise State. That would put Georgia at a whopping 9-4 in the Mountain West.

“Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to which team wants it more, because that’s likely to be the Broncos.”

Bill, I cannot see how you could feel that way. Why should Boise want it more than Georgia? Based on last year? Newsflash!! That was last year, this is this year. There are clear indications out of Athens that this team will have a totally different mindset.

South Carolina went from mediocre to SEC East Champs. Auburn went from mediocre to SEC and National Champs. Georgia can do the same.

Boise has three or four All-American type players but Georgia out-talents them overall. IF CMR can have them ready at the starting gun Boise goes down. Defense is the key early in the season.

FTR I agree with much of your opening statement except the part about Boise winning the game. Your subsequent posts are highly suspect. I am a bit confused as to how and why you consider the history of the last 2-3 years but not they last couple of times the teams played. That’s faulty logic. The history makes no difference once the opening kick off whistle blows. Making your comparisons of TCU/Oklahoma/VT to Georgia is really no comparison at all.

You guys have a good team. Few will deny that. You’ve got a great coach and some talented players, again undeniable. The question is do you have enough horses (pun intended) to go 4 quarters with Georgia. I say no you don’t and history is on my side with that. Whether Georgia is up or down is of no consequence. If we’re up, no one in the country can beat us, if we’re down we are still a SEC caliber team unlikely to lose to any team in the MW. The proof will be in the pudding. Can Boise hammer out 4 quarters with Georgia? Boise lost much more to the draft and graduation than did UGA. I look for a close game early with UGA putting it a way kind of early

I like “G” Force, Glenn and Gates. Pretty good starting OL (except for the vastly overrated Jones). The issue is: Can you keep them motivated with no one competing for their positions? Richt/Bobo have done the near impossible on your offensive line: Eliminated the very purpose to insure success – Competition! It should never have come to this at a program with the resources of UGA. Also, and this is important UGA supporters, your offensive coordinator’s wife should not be BARB DOOLEY’S NEICE!! The relationship precludes an honest evaluation of Bobo’s performance by Richt. There’s not another program in the SEC that would allow this conflict of interest. Only at UGA ! Sheesh.

Not sure how much BSU will miss thier WR’s, I’m sure they have others just like us. But it’s pretty safe to say that they were more important to them last year. AJ was never a reason we won any game last year and he turned out to be more of a distraction on the whole than an asset. I’d rather have AJ back, you know… actually playing, but compard to what he meant to Georgia last year, that’s not a loss.

We didn’t have the entire spring and summer this year with the guy telling a freshman QB, “when in doubt look for #8″, and I think there is an upside to that. The passing is going to still be more affective this year. Maybe AJ would have helped that even more, but Georgia is NOT going to be worse in that area.

Now, HAD AJ been the part of the formula that he was supposed to be, and Georgia had won 10 games……then you can say we are going to have to replace “him”, same as Boise.

ARDawg – my point is that if you are looking at history to project outcome – recent history is where you will look first – as in what is the current state of your program – looking at what you have done the last couple of years – and what improvements you have coming in.

This game does make me a little anxious – but really looking forward to it.

As for your 4th Quarter – I guess UCF, Colorado, Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina, Auburn and Mississippi State would argue that Georgia in not a 4th Quarter team.

By the way – we did beat VA Tech in the 4Q last year – and won the game.
I would argue that Va Tech was a better team last year than Georgia.

Georgia is a sleeping giant – no doubt about it – but Boise has been down this road. A close game favors the Bronco’s as recent history will show you that the underdogs will gain confidence if within striking distance.

Good back and forth commentary. A lot on the line for both teams.

Gary

Wrong, Boise will win and then everyone will discuss the fact that this is the same team that lost to UCF last year. They will point out all of UGA’s flaws in order to say Boise has not accomplished anything. The truth, beating Georgia does not make you a National Title contender. Loosing to us will take any chance away. We are a middle of the road SEC team which makes us better than the middle of the road teams from any other conference but little more.

If we can get out of our own way with azzhat coaching. I see a Georgia defense much deeper, faster and better than the Boise offense. Altamaha Dawg – we are returning 16 starters – 8 on each side of the ball. Yes, we might be missing our two WR’s. I hope our next wave steps up – their play will be critical as our complex passing attack is key.

I used to think that losing AJ Green would really hurt Georgia this year – but come to think of it. Georgia’s WR’s were not super stars when they won SEC titles – it was Georgias incredible use of TE’s that I remember – seems Georgia was reloading TE’s every frgging year – and these guys could catch.

The state of the program is an issue and Boise’s is on a higher plain currently than Georgia’s. However, the first game of the season and greater than the state of the program is the subsection of “the state of the team”. How do they match up on this day on the grid? History is useless, you have two teams that in essence have no played each other. Here is where I like the talent and depth of talent for Georgia. It is also where the coaching of Peterson scares me. He’s better than my Richt and I know it. Although Richt is not a dummy and can coach when he chooses too.

You would be correct about Georgia’s 4th quarter woes last year. We sux’d. Is it a problem this year? Unlikely, not a usual UGA trait. Does it remain? We’ll see but, I wouldn’t bet on it.

The Boise State game

June 9th, 2011
5:20 pm

Right up until the final gun, the UGA/Boise State game is VERY crucial for UGA. UGA needs this win far more than Boise State. Heck, Boise could lose like 32-27 and it will look like a moral victory for them. UGA’s D will be in big T in the blogs, etc. if the Broncs score 26-34 points and UGA looks confused or not in it emotionally.

The UGA Atlantan boo birds will be howling. Boise can go home with a close, well fought loss, score 48 on every body else and by November, if they handle TCU, will be in the Top 12 with a nice bowl on their horizon. They do not need this game like UGA does and for different reasons.

The second after the final gun vs Boise, the SC game for UGA is the NUMBER 1 game. Lose both and right at the moment is could be very, very ugly for the UGA prgoram and CMR. He knows this too.

UGA could still recover from an 0-2 start, win the East over Florida, if Florida handles SC and SC loses another game. This is very, very realistic for UGA, quite frankly. No, it is not what we alumni expect or want but it could start out just like this.

SouthGa, I don’t think you’re stupid…I think you are a loyal Dawg fan, but please look at the facts. Richt has always been a great person, a fine Christian, but recently just an average coach (paid $3M). I think we can do better. How many more losses to UF do we have to endure?

SOUTHGADAWG88 – there is nothing to debate – We want to be in a better conference – but it’s hard to join a fraternity when you are not invited. It is what it is.

We have outgrown our conference – to keep improving in stature and to have shot at getting into another conference we have to play the Georgia’s of the world when given the opportunity.

Again – I realize that the Georgia’s, Oregon’s and Va Tech’s of the world have much more to lose than to gain – so again – thanks to the University of Georgia for playing us.

I do wish that maybe the the TFL would invite us. (TFL = TEXAS FOOTBALL LEAGUE – formerly known as the Big 12). But Texas would have to approve.

Moving on along…we lost 2 SEC east games in 07,1 in 08,3 in 09 and 2 last year so yeah we have just been awful in our division I guess

To my fellow Dawg fans, Don’t fall into the haters hands over this game. If Georgia beats Boise State 63-0 The haters will come in here and say well If Boise State wouldnt of threw 5 interceptions in the second quarter the game would of been different , Georgia still sucks and is irrelevant. They would of lost to Last Years Boise State team, Georgia’s lucky they played a boise state team that was not good… These people come in here to try to bring you down and will say whatever they think will get under your skin. With a great defense this year Georgia will be fine because they will have enough on offense to score. I have not been this excited at seeing a Georgia Defense play since the days of pollack and thomas davis. As long as the Offense keeps the turnovers down, It will def be a double digit win season for the Dawgs. Georgias D-line will get to the Quarterback ALOT. Look for the linebackers to pick alot of balls off for the dawgs as the opposing teams QB will try to get rid of the ball with quick short routes. Dawg Fans, I cant begin to tell you at how big it’s going to be that Geathers stepped his game up at the level he has… Massive Nose guards need breathers and now we have two that will play at a high level at all times during the game. The opposing O-line will never get a break this season. Go DAWGS!!!

SouthGa, maybe you should quit while you’re ahead. I’m assuming you were a 1988 graduate from your handle. I was in the 1968 class, season ticket holder since then, and remember a lot more UGA football than you. It might surprize you to know that we OWNED UF for a long time. We had a great tradition in the SEC as well as nationally, that we don’t have now. Richt was a good coach for 2/3rds of his tenure; however, things have changed. If you don’t learn from your mistakes you are doomed to repeat them. Why not give an extra thousand to the Hartman Fund and tell them you want a better team. Just my opinion

Talent on Defense has been our weakness for a couple of years IMO.Some of you guys must have thought Stafford and Moreno was all we needed….I didn’t.Last year’s D was one of the worst Richt has ever had….sure they mad a few modest improvements in a few areas but finishing last in the SEC in 3rd down conversions will get you beat in close games. It’s actually a testament to how far Mark Richt has brought this program for some loons to have been calling for his head after 08.Bottom line the talent has returned on D this year…look for the record to reflect that this year.

Boise in ATL – enjoy reading your posts.

I agree that UGA is a sleeping giant – Richt has made a lot of changes to address the issues – new DC, new SC coach, and let’s hope that our player development has improved as well.

As far as OLINE – our former OL coach went to Texas – good move on his part as the OLINE has been weak and an issue for several seasons. He was a prime candidate to seek other employment – glad to see someone else getting a shot.

What this all adds up to is – I hope – a greater focus on being a better team.

I applaud Richt for making the changes – and understand the growing pains during the transitions.

Now let’s put on the helmets – let’s settle it on the field – let the best team win.

This has been rather entertaining actually..No I am not a blind homer..I have stated over and over that a defensive drop off in talent has more to do with UGA’s record than anything else. However ultimately recruiting falls back on the HC so yes CMR has to be held accountable for it.Moving forward this year’s bunch is the most talented UGA defense since the BVG years IMO.

Hey a few short years ago guys like Meyer,Carrol,Tressel and Mack Brown were considered the creme de la creme of the college football world.Great recruiters, awesome staffs etc…there were tons of “these guys know how to run a program” talk going around about this bunch….where are they now?Mack Brown is the only one still coaching and he’s coming off of a less than stellar year.Programs dip occasionally…it happens to them all…but great coaches rebound. As I said Dooley would have never gotten to raise that trophy following some of you guy’s logic.

That’s a nice chant and mantra, the frats and all but the brass tacks are, you have to bring something to a conference, any conference with intentions of improving the conference and yourselves. That is just not the case and quite honestly if Boise could hold out and be good year in and year out it may behoove BSU to go independent.

I don’t know from memory but I don’t suspect you have 95,000 seats in the Smurf turf stadium and if you did you couldn’t sell it out. The fantasy BS is okay but don’t get to far removed from the realities of economics.

I like Boise, I always have and I enjoy watching them play. It is a great football school and that alone garners good respect in the South. Boise if it has the “wherewithall” will break that barrier of a respected conference eventually but, they’ll have to bring something to the table. Face it, nobody wants to go to Boise to play. It’s far, it’s colder than a well-digger’s azz and for god’s sake, get rid of that blue turf if you wish to be taken seriously

Flat Tire, Sophomoric insults, someone voices an opposing opinion and “moron” is the best you’ve got.
This UGA squad has the talent to have a very successful season. South Carolina will always be South Carolina a team we have dominated since we began playing football against them,, Florida is in transition, and the UGA – Florida series has historically been cyclical. We will soon find out if the changes he’s made will put the “luster” back on our program. I like many UGA fans are not happy with 8 win seasons, but that isn’t what Mark Richt has delivered during his tenure. Two off years do not define the program, if that were the case Bear Bryant wouldn’t have been at Alabama after back to back 6-5 campaigns in 70 or 71. I will support Coach Richt until he’s no longer employed at Georgia. Then I will support whomever the University hires, and if I don’t like it I will voice my displeasure with the people that made the decision.

UGAKev is right on about our D. All the Murray haters will see a vast improvement in his game. Not predicting a W but if you have heard how loud the DOME gets during a game knows Boise will be a a huge disadvantage. Everyone calling for Rict to be fired knows how good of a coach he is. He has finally made to correct changes, too late for my taste, but nonetheless made the correct ones. I will be at the game screaming my head off. All I have to say to Boise, is our D is NFL size and fast…that will be the difference in the game.

Bigger…stronger…faster…we know how it goes but yet somehow these guys get it done on the field. I think you are gravely underestimating the experience and skill of the Offensive Line. Byrd seems to have been keyed on and he actually is one of the best center prospects in the country for the 2012 draft. The Bronco DL is likely the best in the country, not just the MWC and if you haven’t watched them much, you’re in for a big surprise! Go Broncos!

Seth, BroncoBilly, and whatever other Boise fans are on here, I’ll give you this….you guys are very confident. Your team has won more games than just about anyone else in the country in the last five years. My team has struggled the last two, largely in part to hanging on to a D coordinator too long and last season it was trying to learn a new defensive system with an inexperienced QB at the helm on offense, not a good formula. It’s gonna go like this, if UGA stays the course of the last two years, you guys will beat us in a close game.If Richt rights the ship, Crowell is what we think he is and the D is what we think it is, we will win by two or three TDs. Get mad, laugh, whatever, but remember this post when the final seconds tick down on September 3rd. The guy who keeps putting Boise St. 67- UGA 17 is a moron.

@Get real – I am not the one predicting a blowout 67-17…that is plain silly. No team with elite athletes like Georgia will go down that hard. In fact, I’ve said all along that the Broncos could lose this game. I think the misconception is that the Broncos are the same they were in 2005, severly overmatched and oversized in the trenches. I think that is what will surprise Georgia and SEC fans that haven’t really been watching us lately. I was responding because so many dawg fans think the DL is gonna walk right past our line and that simply is untrue, the OL is one of our biggest strengths.

Is BSU playing every team in the SEC or Georgia? From the comments I’m reading it is unclear.

I’m a fan of a school that is neither Georgia or Boise, but this is an intriguing game to me that I plan on watching. I personally think Boise will pull out a W, but could see it going either way. I respect the heck out of what Chris Peterson and those players have done with so little money and resources in a field that does not respect the little guy.

It is arrogance on either teams fans part to think this one is in the bag though. Both teams have the potential to be great teams this year and I’m looking forward to a great game.

truedawg

I believe it will be a close game. I’m thinking the edge will go to Boise on offense, and UGA od defense. pretty even match. I think the thing that will put UGA over is special teams. UGA has best kicker combo in NCAA and one of the best return men as well. I’m thinking maybe 24-14 in a UGA win. Boise having to play with a long field all day and grinding it out against a large D unit, even if the O line Boise has is big and bad, the D will win that battle over 4 qtrs. Boise will not have much of a running game, so forced to pass, will increase blitz more. Boise QB getting rattled often will be a factor. GO DAWGS!!

Two things in Georgia’s favor here:

1. The game is at the Georgia Dome. There is nothing much of value in that neighborhood for the Georgia tailgaters to destroy.

2. The nation will be watching Oregon-LSU, so the beatdown Georgia takes will not be witnessed by many.

@truedawg

A Tennessee perspective:

1st. Like Coach Fulmer, Richt did not keep up with the changes in the game, made some very poor assistant coaching choices, and let discipline spin out of control.

2nd. Coach Derek Dooley would have been perfect for UGA. Young, energetic, knew the university and the recruiting territory well, and was confident enough to hire the best assistants available and let them coach.

3rd. UGA’s top three: 1. Coach Vince Dooley, 2. Coach Wally Butts, 3. Coach Mark Richt. (He could lose that #3 slot with the continued decay of his program).

Shields Watkins

June 10th, 2011
1:12 pm

Also, I don’t believe I could accurately predict what Derek Dooley would have done at UGA.

But considering the program he would have inherited at UGA would have been in much better shape than the one he inherited here at Tennessee and the recruiting advantage he would have at UGA, I would say there is a good chance his first five years would have looked a lot like Coach Richt’s first five years at UGA.

waytogoRicht

How about a pay cut for Richt if he stinks the joint up again against such teams as Boise, Florida and Auburn? I know its not ever done but I wonder if it would light a fire under sometimes way underperforming coaches. Richt’s sure been overpaid as of late. This year should be his last if there’s not wins against the three aforermentioned teams. Knowing that he annually trips against the Tennessees and South Carolinas. I could go along with those trips as long as he takes care of business against these three. Why? Cause the Florida success ratio will never get better.

I am optimistic about Richt and the Dawgs. I would say, though, that this is a make or break game for Richt more so than BSU. If the Dawgs were to lose, do you know how much crap we will take. It could be a real psyche out. Everybody in the conference will be calling for Richt’s job.

The players better know, BSU will come to play, and a “not-in-my-house” attitude and a couple of late hits isn’t going to blow there house down.

The tricky one is being in the right mindset for USC who will also bring their super-A game. This is it for USC. Spurrier’s firing all his guns at once on this season. When was the last time SC won two in a row against UGA.

@ A.Bishop

You’re right — Boise State IS a Joke. But Boise State being a Joke doesn’t make YOU any less a Moron. Feel better?

Now, for the adults out there:
I am looking forward to this game, and assume it will play out like most of BSU’s games against bigger schools: Broncos come out with their hair on fire early, shock the opposing team, fans, and commentators, then try to hold on against the bigger, stronger athletes in the 4th quarter. I think there is no question that Georgia has better material to work with, but are they the better (and better coached) TEAM? We’ll have to see it determined on the field.

It is an ignorant opinion to think that the Georgia defense will crush Boise State because the pass rush will rattle Kellen Moore — he will likely be the most knowledgeable person on the field (and probably in the entire Dome) with respect to what his options are vs. what the Georgia defense is doing at any given instant. I doubt that ‘rattled’ is even in his vocabulary. He may not be a great physical specimen, but you won’t find a QB in all of college football with a higher “football IQ”. (Look for him to spend a few years in the NFL carrying a clipboard before he moves into coaching at some level). It is more probable that he will only be stopped by a cheap shot (late hit or some such) which I don’t expect to happen — given that Nick Fairley won’t be playing on the other side of the ball.

I am concerned about the possible disparity in the kicking game, though, because BSU does not have proven capablilites in an area where the Dawgs are expected to excel.

As for the rest of it, I see a fairly even matchup: Georgia won’t be able to run or pass against Boise any better than Oklahoma, Oregon (no 1st down until midway through the 3rd qtr? Seriously?), TCU, or Va Tech — until the 4th quarter when their superior athleticism starts to dominate.

The real question will be if Georgia can come back — and if they can –if they can hold off the inevitable 2-minute offense that Kellen Moore is so comfortable with (ask Va Tech about that).

I look for a great game but will be disappointed that I can’t be there in person to acquaint myself with true Southern Hospitality and the Football Religion.

Good luck, Dawgs — hope noone is injured before the game and that you have a great season otherwise. (We all want to beat our opponent but hope they’re undefeated otherwise, right)?

Hey opinionator how much does the BSU center weigh? 5′11″ 285 lbs. And how much will Kwame Geathers and John Jenkins weigh together? Over 700lbs. So thats why Moore will be rattled. BSU will not be able to handle those two. And with most atheltic LB group, that takes a lot of pressure off the secondary. UGA will not have to come back cause UGA understands that other teams have been shocked by BSU and UGA will be prepared. After talking with Coach Richt at a coaching clinic, he knows how good BSU has become and will not underestimate them. UGA will not have to make a comeback in the 4th quarter.

Its no secret GA has a hard time running the ball and its OL is weak point. Boise will stack the line and force GA to throw the ball. They’ll swarm our QB and force T/O’s if they can. GA’s D is much bigger then Boise’s OL. That’ll be a strength for GA only if The DC uses its size to its advantage and does not lay back like it did last season. GA could not stop the run consistently and gave up big yardage and points. GA can win this game only if both the DC and OC do a 180 from last season playcalling. Boise’s game plan will be based on what GA did last season. If GA comes out and does the same things as last season it’ll be a disaster for the dawgs. Don’t blame the players if they lose but the coaches that refuse to change their losing ways.

Looking forward to a good game with the dawgs. BSU will be favored to win this game, top 10 vs ?, so it will be the dawgs that are going to have to really bring their A game. I know the UGA fans think yes bigger athletes mean you win, but not so. The reason BSU is ranked so high is they put together a good team effort to win the games. And the people that put together the rankings are usually somewhere in the ballpark.
I see that the UGA fans focus on the smaller sized center, yet don’t mention Nate Potter possible first round pick next year, also having a tailback that averages 6+ yards per carry isn’t too bad either.
Hope the dawgs put up a good fight and then go on to do well this year, but I have to pick BSU by 10. Should be a good game and hope some of that famous southern hospitality is there :) . Great game to open the season with.

I’m not sure our O line won’t be better than it was last year. It may be the biggest group of starters we have ever had and all the starters are pretty experienced (some more than others, but as a group they are experienced enough, big enough, and talented enough to become a strength as opposed to a weakness). Will that happen? We have to wait and see. We have to get a little lucky with injuries fro this point on and we need one of the RF and R So’s to get healthy enough to be a good backup and we need one true freshman to be a serviceable backup as well.

I don’t think UGA is relying on the “Dream Team” class as much as some of the UGA bashers are claiming. I think UGA fans are expecting 2/3 of the class to redshirt. Most are hoping that Crowell can be a starter or at least be 1B to someone’s 1A. Jenkins will likely start being a JUCO. Ray Drew will battle for playing time. Chris C. might compete at WR for a backup position. One or two DB’s might compete for some time and one might step up and start at safety and then one OL will step up to be a backup.

Most of us are counting on 2-3 starters, 2-3 backups and some special teams play. Nothing too out of the ordinary other than Jenkins.

I tell you Dawgs…..they not only want to win the game, they really want to embarass you infront of all your families. This game will set the tone for most of the season. Beat Boise and then S. Carolina and i’ll guarantee you that the pollsters will put you up in the top 10.
1st week is against a passing team and the 2nd week is against a running team. The front 4 will have to definitely show up for both games as well as the offensive line.
Even if you lose both games by a point or 2, they will dump you out of the top 25. Nobody remembers a loser but only winners.
Dont look past Boise because they can pass and everyone will have to make sure where they need to line up on D and hopefully everyone on the team will be pumped up to show the entire nation that youre a very good team that deserves respect.

There is a big difference between the SEC and MTN West or Pac-10.There is a reason the SEC has won the last 5 NC’s.

McGarrity will use the Foley example of getting rid of the Zooker and fire him before mid season. And don’t forget that the Zooker owned Richt.

COACH B

Ben, as a former coach I understand your defense and record of the great teams BSU defeated, but until BSU joins a respected conference you willl always have to prove yourself. BSU at the beginning of the year is the equal of any team, but to earn your place in the national championship talk you have to survive a grueling schedule. Most BCS teams have grueling schedules that they must survive in order to earn the national champioship game. It is the same reason that to win a golf championship the players must walk NOT RIDE EASILY all 18 holes. You must earn your championship by playing all 18 holes and not by playing two PAR 5 holes expecting to be given the trophy. In 2002, UGA finished 13-1, but we didn’t earn the national championship because we lost by 7 points to Florida. I fully expect this to be a seven or eight win season for Georgia. So, even if BSU beats an average Georgia team, all you can say is you beat an average Georgia team with a great history. Hope to see you at the Dome in September.

Broncos are going to walk into a buzz saw. Dawgs will be hungry and eager to prove 2010 was a fluke. Dawgs smack them down and then stomp on them for a while. Dawgs: 38 Broncos: 20.

Better watch it Bill, you are being a little to honest. I am not sure you’re telling the Dawgs what they want to hear and they will accuse you of being anti dawgs. Ga should win this game from the beginning because of talent alone. If not, it will be another .500 season.

RabidDawgFan, Geathers did not play all that well against Ben Jones. On his two big tackles for loss, Jones was blocking the linebacker. It was a guard that Geathers beat. If you really want to see a good Jones/Geathers matchup, look at Thomas’ TD run up the middle from about the 10. Jones burried Geathers.
