Dogs could make or break Boise State’s season

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

We all know what’s in it for the Dogs in opening against Boise State in the Georgia Dome. The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game is a “Hey, remember us?” game, a chance for Mark Richt’s program to make a statement that it’s still relevant on the national scene. Win or lose, at least UGA will be in the spotlight.

But as College Football News notes in its 2011 Boise State preview, the game could mean a whole lot more to the Broncos, who’ve spent the past few seasons trying to convince the college football world they routinely belong in the national championship conversation.

As CFN puts it, “The opening day battle with Georgia in Atlanta means everything” for Boise State. “Win that, and it’ll be another year of talking about whether or not the Broncos belong in the national title chase considering they’ll almost certainly be the favorites in the rest of the 11 games. … If they beat Georgia in the opener the expectations and the season changes; the national title will be in play.”

The Broncos’ other important game on Nov. 12 against TCU, probably for the Mountain West title, “might turn out to be just as big,” CFN says, “but the season for Boise State, and for college football, might hinge on the performance in front of the hostile crowd in Atlanta. Last year, the Broncos were able to do it against Virginia Tech on the road and the national title expectations kicked in. The same might be true with a win over the Dawgs.”

Beating Boise State would get an important season off to a great start for Richt, but the fact is that for Georgia’s overall season hopes the SEC game a week later in Athens against South Carolina is more important.

But if Boise State loses to the Dogs, the argument could be made their ultimate hopes for the season are toast.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to which team wants it more, because that’s likely to be the Broncos.

But as Richt likes to say, no pressure.

The Texas Rangers made Major League Baseball look awfully good with their classy gesture drafting paralyzed Diamond Dog Johnathan Taylor. Dawgs Online was exactly right saying the Bulldog Nation now has a new favorite American League team. Meanwhile, to find out how you can still donate to the Johnathan Taylor Fund, check out

Georgia baseball signee Dante Bichette Jr. of Orlando, son of former Rockies outfielder Dante Bichette Sr., was one of seven UGA current players and 11 signees picked in the MLB draft. It’s apparent now that he’ll never don the Red and Black, and you can’t blame him for taking an estimated $700,000 signing bonus straight out of high school.

“I told the coaches that if I went in the first round, I was going to go pro,” Bichette told the Athens Banner-Herald. As for UGA, he said, “I couldn’t have picked a better school to work with. The way they handled it was perfect. They even told me that if I went in the first round, I should go play pro ball. They’re behind me 100 percent. I’ll always be a Dog in my heart.”

You’re right — Boise State IS a Joke. But Boise State being a Joke doesn’t make YOU any less a Moron. Feel better?

Now, for the adults out there:
I am looking forward to this game, and assume it will play out like most of BSU’s games against bigger schools: Broncos come out with their hair on fire early, shock the opposing team, fans, and commentators, then try to hold on against the bigger, stronger athletes in the 4th quarter. I think there is no question that Georgia has better material to work with, but are they the better (and better coached) TEAM? We’ll have to see it determined on the field.

It is an ignorant opinion to think that the Georgia defense will crush Boise State because the pass rush will rattle Kellen Moore — he will likely be the most knowledgeable person on the field (and probably in the entire Dome) with respect to what his options are vs. what the Georgia defense is doing at any given instant. I doubt that ‘rattled’ is even in his vocabulary. He may not be a great physical specimen, but you won’t find a QB in all of college football with a higher “football IQ”. (Look for him to spend a few years in the NFL carrying a clipboard before he moves into coaching at some level). It is more probable that he will only be stopped by a cheap shot (late hit or some such) which I don’t expect to happen — given that Nick Fairley won’t be playing on the other side of the ball.

I am concerned about the possible disparity in the kicking game, though, because BSU does not have proven capablilites in an area where the Dawgs are expected to excel.

As for the rest of it, I see a fairly even matchup: Georgia won’t be able to run or pass against Boise any better than Oklahoma, Oregon (no 1st down until midway through the 3rd qtr? Seriously?), TCU, or Va Tech — until the 4th quarter when their superior athleticism starts to dominate.

The real question will be if Georgia can come back — and if they can –if they can hold off the inevitable 2-minute offense that Kellen Moore is so comfortable with (ask Va Tech about that).

I look for a great game but will be disappointed that I can’t be there in person to acquaint myself with true Southern Hospitality and the Football Religion.

Good luck, Dawgs — hope noone is injured before the game and that you have a great season otherwise. (We all want to beat our opponent but hope they’re undefeated otherwise, right)?

Hey opinionator how much does the BSU center weigh? 5′11″ 285 lbs. And how much will Kwame Geathers and John Jenkins weigh together? Over 700lbs. So thats why Moore will be rattled. BSU will not be able to handle those two. And with most atheltic LB group, that takes a lot of pressure off the secondary. UGA will not have to come back cause UGA understands that other teams have been shocked by BSU and UGA will be prepared. After talking with Coach Richt at a coaching clinic, he knows how good BSU has become and will not underestimate them. UGA will not have to make a comeback in the 4th quarter.

You better hope UGA DON’T NEED TO MAKE NO 4th Qtr COMEBACK. Russ has a losing record just like MURRAY. Murray pulled a LeBron in the 4th qtr all last year. Well, at least Russ was still fighting for a win all game long and not hiding in his Dawg House.

That’s cause Russ is healthy unlike the past few Ugas. And Murray is getting better. He’ll improve is losing record. I’m very sure the Dawgs will come out strong cause they’ve seen what BSU has done to teams in the past.

David Pollack was/is 6′2″ and 265 but he played bigger and against Bigger players and was a 3 time ALL American and on list for god knows how many Lists for awards.
As MUTT fans like to say “It Ain’t the SIZE of the dawg in the Fight but the SIZE of the Fight in the dawg.”

Pollack played with the University of Georgia and was a roommate of NFL quarterback David Greene.
He became only the second 3-time All-American in school history (2002, 2003, 2004), next to Heisman winner Herschel Walker. In addition to his All-American honors, Pollack received the:
2002 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year Award,
2004 Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year Award,
2004 Chuck Bednarik Award: given annually to the top collegiate defensive player,
2003 and 2004 Ted Hendricks Award: given annually to the top collegiate defensive end,
2004 Lombardi Award: given annually to the top defensive or offensive collegiate lineman who, in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the discipline of Vince Lombardi, and
2004 Lott Trophy: given annually to a defensive player exemplifying integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community, and tenacity.

Good Luck to Dante Jr. I think this Boise State game is going to be like the Chik-fil-A game in 2008. A #10 Clemson team got rocked by a #24 Alabama team. In about 4-5 weeks Alabama was the #1 team.

If Georgia gets the lead, the game is over. Georgia has the talent to obliterate Boise State and last year’s 6 – 7 record was a wake-up call that superior talent does not automatically translate to wins. The Bulldogs have a lot to prove this year.

It won’t be that close.

Like kerryb said above, it will be like Alabama-Clemson a few years ago.

Richt and Tommy Bowden come from tha same coaching tree and neither are committed to physical football. It will get ugly quickly for Georgia.

Then it will get uglier the following week vs. South Carolina.

Its no secret GA has a hard time running the ball and its OL is weak point. Boise will stack the line and force GA to throw the ball. They’ll swarm our QB and force T/O’s if they can. GA’s D is much bigger then Boise’s OL. That’ll be a strength for GA only if The DC uses its size to its advantage and does not lay back like it did last season. GA could not stop the run consistently and gave up big yardage and points. GA can win this game only if both the DC and OC do a 180 from last season playcalling. Boise’s game plan will be based on what GA did last season. If GA comes out and does the same things as last season it’ll be a disaster for the dawgs. Don’t blame the players if they lose but the coaches that refuse to change their losing ways.

Looking forward to a good game with the dawgs. BSU will be favored to win this game, top 10 vs ?, so it will be the dawgs that are going to have to really bring their A game. I know the UGA fans think yes bigger athletes mean you win, but not so. The reason BSU is ranked so high is they put together a good team effort to win the games. And the people that put together the rankings are usually somewhere in the ballpark.
I see that the UGA fans focus on the smaller sized center, yet don’t mention Nate Potter possible first round pick next year, also having a tailback that averages 6+ yards per carry isn’t too bad either.
Hope the dawgs put up a good fight and then go on to do well this year, but I have to pick BSU by 10. Should be a good game and hope some of that famous southern hospitality is there :) . Great game to open the season with.

Coach Richt has only won 2 out last 11 games against ranked teams like Boise. Odds overwhelmingly favor Boise, Richt’s not a big game coach anymore.

Richt’s going to take Muschamp to school—GA beats florida easy this year. If Ga can upset south carolina, they win the East. With Crowell breaking big runs, this could be the best running game in the SEC. Dawgs: back on top!

If Boise puts up 55 and UGA loses 55 to 14 or something like that… Richt will have a hard time keeping the program together. I don’t think that is going to happen. Murray the QB may feel some pressure going into the game, but I doubt that our two DL, Geathers and Jenkins are “feeling pressure”. I didn’t play any D Line, but don’t think those guys feel pressure the same way a QB or a WR does before a game. Maybe I’m wrong.

Realy fun to listen to delusional UGA fans going on about unproven players. Just look at last year results. B St will be more than you can handle that early in the season. Then USC will grind you down and blow you out. And, all of the super huge linemen will be run out of steam in the second half chasing all of the fast B St players. Richt to teach florida coach Muschamp? remember most of you puppies wanted hime to replace Richt. Get real and hope foe a mid-level bown and a wining record.

1. Boise State is better than the last time Georgia played them
2. Georgia’s defense is better than last year.
3. Mark Richt needs to win this game badly.
4. Boise St. needs to win this to have any chance at all for a NC
5. Georgia is bigger and faster. Boise is better than you think.
6. A close game favors Boise.
7. Moore’s passing percentage is better than Murray’s.

June 12th, 2011

I’m not sure our O line won’t be better than it was last year. It may be the biggest group of starters we have ever had and all the starters are pretty experienced (some more than others, but as a group they are experienced enough, big enough, and talented enough to become a strength as opposed to a weakness). Will that happen? We have to wait and see. We have to get a little lucky with injuries fro this point on and we need one of the RF and R So’s to get healthy enough to be a good backup and we need one true freshman to be a serviceable backup as well.

I don’t think UGA is relying on the “Dream Team” class as much as some of the UGA bashers are claiming. I think UGA fans are expecting 2/3 of the class to redshirt. Most are hoping that Crowell can be a starter or at least be 1B to someone’s 1A. Jenkins will likely start being a JUCO. Ray Drew will battle for playing time. Chris C. might compete at WR for a backup position. One or two DB’s might compete for some time and one might step up and start at safety and then one OL will step up to be a backup.

Most of us are counting on 2-3 starters, 2-3 backups and some special teams play. Nothing too out of the ordinary other than Jenkins.

You want to play football and are a barely qualifier, you are going to the SEC. But wth SEC football you get an SEC education. Which with a few exceptions no worth the paper it written on. Most of the “SEC” type athletes will never even snif the NFL. But since UGA is a has-been even these guys are passing on UGA for Auburn, Ala and even Tech. The word is out about UGA!

Correct. It’s common knowledge that no one goes to Athens for a real education. It’s Party Central, and it’s hard to absorb knowledge when you’re drunk most of the time. For football players, it’s even worse, since most of them don’t meet entrance requirements and stay in remedial studies until Mark Richt is through with them.

See Boise State is already thinking beyond the Georgia Game which is a “Statement Game” to them. In their minds they’ve already played the season and saying “hey we deserve a shot at the national title cause we beat Georgia”.
I tell you Dawgs…..they not only want to win the game, they really want to embarass you infront of all your families. This game will set the tone for most of the season. Beat Boise and then S. Carolina and i’ll guarantee you that the pollsters will put you up in the top 10.
1st week is against a passing team and the 2nd week is against a running team. The front 4 will have to definitely show up for both games as well as the offensive line.
Even if you lose both games by a point or 2, they will dump you out of the top 25. Nobody remembers a loser but only winners.
Dont look past Boise because they can pass and everyone will have to make sure where they need to line up on D and hopefully everyone on the team will be pumped up to show the entire nation that youre a very good team that deserves respect.

Ben, as a former coach I understand your defense and record of the great teams BSU defeated, but until BSU joins a respected conference you willl always have to prove yourself. BSU at the beginning of the year is the equal of any team, but to earn your place in the national championship talk you have to survive a grueling schedule. Most BCS teams have grueling schedules that they must survive in order to earn the national champioship game. It is the same reason that to win a golf championship the players must walk NOT RIDE EASILY all 18 holes. You must earn your championship by playing all 18 holes and not by playing two PAR 5 holes expecting to be given the trophy. In 2002, UGA finished 13-1, but we didn’t earn the national championship because we lost by 7 points to Florida. I fully expect this to be a seven or eight win season for Georgia. So, even if BSU beats an average Georgia team, all you can say is you beat an average Georgia team with a great history. Hope to see you at the Dome in September.
