Dogs could make or break Boise State’s season

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

We all know what’s in it for the Dogs in opening against Boise State in the Georgia Dome. The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game is a “Hey, remember us?” game, a chance for Mark Richt’s program to make a statement that it’s still relevant on the national scene. Win or lose, at least UGA will be in the spotlight.

But as College Football News notes in its 2011 Boise State preview, the game could mean a whole lot more to the Broncos, who’ve spent the past few seasons trying to convince the college football world they routinely belong in the national championship conversation.

As CFN puts it, “The opening day battle with Georgia in Atlanta means everything” for Boise State. “Win that, and it’ll be another year of talking about whether or not the Broncos belong in the national title chase considering they’ll almost certainly be the favorites in the rest of the 11 games. … If they beat Georgia in the opener the expectations and the season changes; the national title will be in play.”

The Broncos’ other important game on Nov. 12 against TCU, probably for the Mountain West title, “might turn out to be just as big,” CFN says, “but the season for Boise State, and for college football, might hinge on the performance in front of the hostile crowd in Atlanta. Last year, the Broncos were able to do it against Virginia Tech on the road and the national title expectations kicked in. The same might be true with a win over the Dawgs.”

Beating Boise State would get an important season off to a great start for Richt, but the fact is that for Georgia’s overall season hopes the SEC game a week later in Athens against South Carolina is more important.

But if Boise State loses to the Dogs, the argument could be made their ultimate hopes for the season are toast.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to which team wants it more, because that’s likely to be the Broncos.

But as Richt likes to say, no pressure.

JT2!

The Texas Rangers made Major League Baseball look awfully good with their classy gesture drafting paralyzed Diamond Dog Johnathan Taylor. Dawgs Online was exactly right saying the Bulldog Nation now has a new favorite American League team. Meanwhile, to find out how you can still donate to the Johnathan Taylor Fund, check out Georgiadogs.com.

DANTE, WE HARDLY KNEW YE

Georgia baseball signee Dante Bichette Jr. of Orlando, son of former Rockies outfielder Dante Bichette Sr., was one of seven UGA current players and 11 signees picked in the MLB draft. It’s apparent now that he’ll never don the Red and Black, and you can’t blame him for taking an estimated $700,000 signing bonus straight out of high school.

“I told the coaches that if I went in the first round, I was going to go pro,” Bichette told the Athens Banner-Herald. As for UGA, he said, “I couldn’t have picked a better school to work with. The way they handled it was perfect. They even told me that if I went in the first round, I should go play pro ball. They’re behind me 100 percent. I’ll always be a Dog in my heart.”

NO brother I wasn’t slapping you. Didn’t mean that come out that way. Some of my best lifelong Bulldawg Buddies are not alum, but did have ties, and know more about Georgia football than most of the folks in this room. I’m betting you do too.

What I was saying is that Ol’ Snoop wants to pretend he doing us all such a favor, claiming you are the problem. Appearantly You arent doing enough to get Richt Fired in June. Point being, he talk a big game, he is doing exactly the same thing. He may as well be you, or me, when it comes to what he says is the problem. I guess he is also the problem huh?

Guys, the Dogs don’t have a chance until they find a QB who can beat a winning team. Murray’s winless in his 6 attempts and has played porrly in each attempt. Murray has only thrown 5 td’s against ranked teams. Moore from Boise is tops in accuracy, Murray is not accurate, esp3cially on long passes, where Moore completes 60%.

UGAKev is right on about our D. All the Murray haters will see a vast improvement in his game. Not predicting a W but if you have heard how loud the DOME gets during a game knows Boise will be a a huge disadvantage. Everyone calling for Rict to be fired knows how good of a coach he is. He has finally made to correct changes, too late for my taste, but nonetheless made the correct ones. I will be at the game screaming my head off. All I have to say to Boise, is our D is NFL size and fast…that will be the difference in the game.

Bigger…stronger…faster…we know how it goes but yet somehow these guys get it done on the field. I think you are gravely underestimating the experience and skill of the Offensive Line. Byrd seems to have been keyed on and he actually is one of the best center prospects in the country for the 2012 draft. The Bronco DL is likely the best in the country, not just the MWC and if you haven’t watched them much, you’re in for a big surprise! Go Broncos!

Seth, BroncoBilly, and whatever other Boise fans are on here, I’ll give you this….you guys are very confident. Your team has won more games than just about anyone else in the country in the last five years. My team has struggled the last two, largely in part to hanging on to a D coordinator too long and last season it was trying to learn a new defensive system with an inexperienced QB at the helm on offense, not a good formula. It’s gonna go like this, if UGA stays the course of the last two years, you guys will beat us in a close game.If Richt rights the ship, Crowell is what we think he is and the D is what we think it is, we will win by two or three TDs. Get mad, laugh, whatever, but remember this post when the final seconds tick down on September 3rd. The guy who keeps putting Boise St. 67- UGA 17 is a moron.

@Get real – I am not the one predicting a blowout 67-17…that is plain silly. No team with elite athletes like Georgia will go down that hard. In fact, I’ve said all along that the Broncos could lose this game. I think the misconception is that the Broncos are the same they were in 2005, severly overmatched and oversized in the trenches. I think that is what will surprise Georgia and SEC fans that haven’t really been watching us lately. I was responding because so many dawg fans think the DL is gonna walk right past our line and that simply is untrue, the OL is one of our biggest strengths.

Cletusdawg

Not worried in the least about Boise State. Dawgs will score at least 40 on them. I’ll be generous and give the Broncos 3 scores and 13 pts.
This is the SEC. By start of week #3 UGA will be 2-0.

No pressure at all. ‘A’ game, to be sure, is needed. Can anybody understand that there is pressure. It is how well you are coached that prepares a player to deal well with the pressure. Those who deny that there is pressure just don’t get it.

Is BSU playing every team in the SEC or Georgia? From the comments I’m reading it is unclear.

I’m a fan of a school that is neither Georgia or Boise, but this is an intriguing game to me that I plan on watching. I personally think Boise will pull out a W, but could see it going either way. I respect the heck out of what Chris Peterson and those players have done with so little money and resources in a field that does not respect the little guy.

It is arrogance on either teams fans part to think this one is in the bag though. Both teams have the potential to be great teams this year and I’m looking forward to a great game.

truedawg

I believe it will be a close game. I’m thinking the edge will go to Boise on offense, and UGA od defense. pretty even match. I think the thing that will put UGA over is special teams. UGA has best kicker combo in NCAA and one of the best return men as well. I’m thinking maybe 24-14 in a UGA win. Boise having to play with a long field all day and grinding it out against a large D unit, even if the O line Boise has is big and bad, the D will win that battle over 4 qtrs. Boise will not have much of a running game, so forced to pass, will increase blitz more. Boise QB getting rattled often will be a factor. GO DAWGS!!

Two things in Georgia’s favor here:

1. The game is at the Georgia Dome. There is nothing much of value in that neighborhood for the Georgia tailgaters to destroy.

2. The nation will be watching Oregon-LSU, so the beatdown Georgia takes will not be witnessed by many.

3rd…Can you atleast say he has been the greatest coach the UGA football team has had?

Shields Watkins

@truedawg

A Tennessee perspective:

1st. Like Coach Fulmer, Richt did not keep up with the changes in the game, made some very poor assistant coaching choices, and let discipline spin out of control.

2nd. Coach Derek Dooley would have been perfect for UGA. Young, energetic, knew the university and the recruiting territory well, and was confident enough to hire the best assistants available and let them coach.

3rd. UGA’s top three: 1. Coach Vince Dooley, 2. Coach Wally Butts, 3. Coach Mark Richt. (He could lose that #3 slot with the continued decay of his program).

Shields Watkins

June 10th, 2011
1:12 pm

Also, I don’t believe I could accurately predict what Derek Dooley would have done at UGA.

But considering the program he would have inherited at UGA would have been in much better shape than the one he inherited here at Tennessee and the recruiting advantage he would have at UGA, I would say there is a good chance his first five years would have looked a lot like Coach Richt’s first five years at UGA.

waytogoRicht

June 10th, 2011
1:44 pm

How about a pay cut for Richt if he stinks the joint up again against such teams as Boise, Florida and Auburn? I know its not ever done but I wonder if it would light a fire under sometimes way underperforming coaches. Richt’s sure been overpaid as of late. This year should be his last if there’s not wins against the three aforermentioned teams. Knowing that he annually trips against the Tennessees and South Carolinas. I could go along with those trips as long as he takes care of business against these three. Why? Cause the Florida success ratio will never get better.

Why would you say the Bronco’s would want to win more than Georgia??? That makes no sense. If Boise St. wants this game more than UGA, then we should just go ahead and forfeit right now.

LakeDawg

Boise will be well coached and if UGA is coached like they’ve been the past 3 years Boise will win this game by 2 TD’s. However, if UGA is prepared and some coaching actually occurred in the off season, UGA by 2 TD’s.

chazzo

I am optimistic about Richt and the Dawgs. I would say, though, that this is a make or break game for Richt more so than BSU. If the Dawgs were to lose, do you know how much crap we will take. It could be a real psyche out. Everybody in the conference will be calling for Richt’s job.

The players better know, BSU will come to play, and a “not-in-my-house” attitude and a couple of late hits isn’t going to blow there house down.

The tricky one is being in the right mindset for USC who will also bring their super-A game. This is it for USC. Spurrier’s firing all his guns at once on this season. When was the last time SC won two in a row against UGA.

There is a mighty steep learning curve this season and two big games to start. Walk the walk, Dawgs! Walk the walk!
