Dogs could make or break Boise State’s season

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

We all know what’s in it for the Dogs in opening against Boise State in the Georgia Dome. The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game is a “Hey, remember us?” game, a chance for Mark Richt’s program to make a statement that it’s still relevant on the national scene. Win or lose, at least UGA will be in the spotlight.

But as College Football News notes in its 2011 Boise State preview, the game could mean a whole lot more to the Broncos, who’ve spent the past few seasons trying to convince the college football world they routinely belong in the national championship conversation.

As CFN puts it, “The opening day battle with Georgia in Atlanta means everything” for Boise State. “Win that, and it’ll be another year of talking about whether or not the Broncos belong in the national title chase considering they’ll almost certainly be the favorites in the rest of the 11 games. … If they beat Georgia in the opener the expectations and the season changes; the national title will be in play.”

The Broncos’ other important game on Nov. 12 against TCU, probably for the Mountain West title, “might turn out to be just as big,” CFN says, “but the season for Boise State, and for college football, might hinge on the performance in front of the hostile crowd in Atlanta. Last year, the Broncos were able to do it against Virginia Tech on the road and the national title expectations kicked in. The same might be true with a win over the Dawgs.”

Beating Boise State would get an important season off to a great start for Richt, but the fact is that for Georgia’s overall season hopes the SEC game a week later in Athens against South Carolina is more important.

But if Boise State loses to the Dogs, the argument could be made their ultimate hopes for the season are toast.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to which team wants it more, because that’s likely to be the Broncos.

But as Richt likes to say, no pressure.

The Texas Rangers made Major League Baseball look awfully good with their classy gesture drafting paralyzed Diamond Dog Johnathan Taylor. Dawgs Online was exactly right saying the Bulldog Nation now has a new favorite American League team. Meanwhile, to find out how you can still donate to the Johnathan Taylor Fund, check out Georgiadogs.com.

DANTE, WE HARDLY KNEW YE

Georgia baseball signee Dante Bichette Jr. of Orlando, son of former Rockies outfielder Dante Bichette Sr., was one of seven UGA current players and 11 signees picked in the MLB draft. It’s apparent now that he’ll never don the Red and Black, and you can’t blame him for taking an estimated $700,000 signing bonus straight out of high school.

“I told the coaches that if I went in the first round, I was going to go pro,” Bichette told the Athens Banner-Herald. As for UGA, he said, “I couldn’t have picked a better school to work with. The way they handled it was perfect. They even told me that if I went in the first round, I should go play pro ball. They’re behind me 100 percent. I’ll always be a Dog in my heart.”

Woof!

BroncoHunt – your 3:06 is probably correct.

Old Dawg – Agree – both teams are fighting for respect and will be a physical game.
Did you see the Clemson – Auburn game last year? My gosh – what a war. Both teams fighting for respect – toe to toe.

We can not trade blows like AU/Clemson game with Georgia.

Georgia is going to score some on us – we will score some on Georgia.
2 keys for Georgia:
How much will your defense have improved over last year in understanding and executing the 3/4?
Will Georgia have a functional and consistent O-Line?
If Georgia has not improved in these areas – game over.

Boise State
Strike wide, strike deep, strike short, keep Georgia’s defense off balance and on the field.
Defensively – keep the game managable and close.

The G-Force (Glenn & Gates) will get it done. Look for 100 yards from Crowell, 100 from King, and 50 from Malcome et al. Also, look for the UGA DL to sparkle.

WDE–Funny thing is, they’ve only played once and it was six years ago. Now you can’t tell me that Boise State and Georgia are the same teams that they were six years ago. Boise State is much better and Georgia is much worse, and that is a fact. When you’re a consistently top 10 team playing one that is unranked AND you are returning a Heisman finalist, I’d say the odds are in your favor. The Georgia fan base also seems to forget that they went 6-7 last year and lost their best player.

Take that tinfoil hat off and think before you type. Could be the safety should have always been a LB. Could be the RB was a highly coveted LB that was mistakenly made a TB. Are all the tide fans as stupid as you appear to be?

If our 12 game schedule consisted of 9 Vand-Kent caliber teams coupled with two GT caliber teams plus 1 good team every year.We would win 11-12 games every year too.Maybe I’m being generous saying they play 9 teams as good as Kentucky

The Humpers had better be vastly improved on Defense against Boise. The choking fat boy’s D gave up 33 against the worst Gator D since 1989 last year. Petersen wants this game because he will be the new UGA coach in 2012.

Boise scores 32 in big games against ranked teams.

UGA only scores 15 against ranked teams.

That’s with AJ & Durham who went to NFL.

I like Boise by 21.

@BroncoHunt nope we aren’t forgetting we went 6-7 last year and I really hope Boise thinks we did. Problem partner is that we went 6-6 in the SEC we have no reason to think that our team last year wouldn’t have won the Mt. West..you see young man until you have actually beaten a SEC team you don’t get to get all bowed up with us. your bunch has tried what 4 times and still no wins? Correct me if that’s wrong..but even if you have won one you still get the idea..its not easy to win in the SEC, we had a bad year ..in the SEC until you prove you can beat a SEC team…well you ain’t the Gators..or Bama or Auburn,UT etc…

SOUTHGADAWG88–Then how come Boise State’s stock has fallen since last year because they lost 2 good receivers? Just because it’s not your most important position, that doesn’t mean that your team will be any better for losing him.

Don’t forget UGA fans the game will be in ATLANTA. DUI don’t get a pass and a slap on the back. Also it will be a long weekend in Wright Street is you do get caught. It is a Holiday weekend and no court Monday morning. It ain’t like bonding out of ACC that is for sure. UGA Drunks BEWARE or stay home and watch it on TV. It will really suck to lose and end up spending the weekend in the Fulton County jail too.

Georgia is wounded. Cut very deep. The alumni and fanbase are split about the team and head coach.

Georgia is either going to come out and fight for it’s life or lay down and die.

Boise should be scared of that first scenario.

But then again, Mark Richt would never turn his team loose, he’s just a terrible coach.

Georgia has struggled in scoring in big games against ranked teams for last 2 years, got 20 points a game in 09′ with Joe Cox, and of course fell down to 15 points a game in 10′ with Aaron Murray. Georgia went
2-9 last 2 years against ranked teams. Not a 1 year thing, it’s a 2 year trend.

How did UGA go 6-6 in the SEC?
I thought WDE was War Damn Eagle?
I am pretty Sure Tech, Colorado, La. Laf, and Idaho St are not SEC teams so HTF did UGA go 6-6 in the SEC? 6-6 in the SEC means UGA played and Beat itself or lost to itself.
Damn now I am think UGA fans are right when the say WDE/ Auburn people are dumb.

BroncoHunt

You wouldn’t have won the Mountain West, WDE. TCU would have DESTROYED you, and you probably would have lost to San Diego State. You didn’t lose all 7 games in the SEC either. You lost to UCF and Colorado, who are both assuredly inferior to Boise State. That would put Georgia at a whopping 9-4 in the Mountain West.

“Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to which team wants it more, because that’s likely to be the Broncos.”

Bill, I cannot see how you could feel that way. Why should Boise want it more than Georgia? Based on last year? Newsflash!! That was last year, this is this year. There are clear indications out of Athens that this team will have a totally different mindset.

South Carolina went from mediocre to SEC East Champs. Auburn went from mediocre to SEC and National Champs. Georgia can do the same.

Boise has three or four All-American type players but Georgia out-talents them overall. IF CMR can have them ready at the starting gun Boise goes down. Defense is the key early in the season.

FTR I agree with much of your opening statement except the part about Boise winning the game. Your subsequent posts are highly suspect. I am a bit confused as to how and why you consider the history of the last 2-3 years but not they last couple of times the teams played. That’s faulty logic. The history makes no difference once the opening kick off whistle blows. Making your comparisons of TCU/Oklahoma/VT to Georgia is really no comparison at all.

You guys have a good team. Few will deny that. You’ve got a great coach and some talented players, again undeniable. The question is do you have enough horses (pun intended) to go 4 quarters with Georgia. I say no you don’t and history is on my side with that. Whether Georgia is up or down is of no consequence. If we’re up, no one in the country can beat us, if we’re down we are still a SEC caliber team unlikely to lose to any team in the MW. The proof will be in the pudding. Can Boise hammer out 4 quarters with Georgia? Boise lost much more to the draft and graduation than did UGA. I look for a close game early with UGA putting it a way kind of early

Maybe I’m blowing smoke up my own butt but I am looking for a more disciplined group of Dawgs this year. Like it or not, Richt is on the bubble and if he fields another undisciplined that even resembles the last 4 years he’s got to know he’s a goner. I don’t think he wants to leave and a 9 win season almost assures him of another year. We were better with penalties last year (albeit in a losing effort) but better.
