Dogs could make or break Boise State’s season

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

We all know what’s in it for the Dogs in opening against Boise State in the Georgia Dome. The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game is a “Hey, remember us?” game, a chance for Mark Richt’s program to make a statement that it’s still relevant on the national scene. Win or lose, at least UGA will be in the spotlight.

But as College Football News notes in its 2011 Boise State preview, the game could mean a whole lot more to the Broncos, who’ve spent the past few seasons trying to convince the college football world they routinely belong in the national championship conversation.

As CFN puts it, “The opening day battle with Georgia in Atlanta means everything” for Boise State. “Win that, and it’ll be another year of talking about whether or not the Broncos belong in the national title chase considering they’ll almost certainly be the favorites in the rest of the 11 games. … If they beat Georgia in the opener the expectations and the season changes; the national title will be in play.”

The Broncos’ other important game on Nov. 12 against TCU, probably for the Mountain West title, “might turn out to be just as big,” CFN says, “but the season for Boise State, and for college football, might hinge on the performance in front of the hostile crowd in Atlanta. Last year, the Broncos were able to do it against Virginia Tech on the road and the national title expectations kicked in. The same might be true with a win over the Dawgs.”

Beating Boise State would get an important season off to a great start for Richt, but the fact is that for Georgia’s overall season hopes the SEC game a week later in Athens against South Carolina is more important.

But if Boise State loses to the Dogs, the argument could be made their ultimate hopes for the season are toast.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to which team wants it more, because that’s likely to be the Broncos.

But as Richt likes to say, no pressure.

The Texas Rangers made Major League Baseball look awfully good with their classy gesture drafting paralyzed Diamond Dog Johnathan Taylor. Dawgs Online was exactly right saying the Bulldog Nation now has a new favorite American League team. DANTE, WE HARDLY KNEW YE

Georgia baseball signee Dante Bichette Jr. of Orlando, son of former Rockies outfielder Dante Bichette Sr., was one of seven UGA current players and 11 signees picked in the MLB draft. It’s apparent now that he’ll never don the Red and Black, and you can’t blame him for taking an estimated $700,000 signing bonus straight out of high school.

“I told the coaches that if I went in the first round, I was going to go pro,” Bichette told the Athens Banner-Herald. As for UGA, he said, “I couldn’t have picked a better school to work with. The way they handled it was perfect. They even told me that if I went in the first round, I should go play pro ball. They’re behind me 100 percent. I’ll always be a Dog in my heart.”

It’s truly embarrassing for Dawg fans to even think about talking smack to a national power like Boise State when UGA has done nothing in years!

You can’t even beat UCF a CUSA team!? You all need to keep your mouth shut and be lucky we’ve allowed your crap team to grace the same field as a team like Boise State.

Like I always say… the best time for a Dawg fan is the pre-season! Where anything is possible! Kinda sad if you ask me. LOL!

Quit talking smack period! You are not better than VT, Oregon, TCU, Oregon St. or any other team we beat. You’re a bunch of fools talking smack because that’s all you can do before you get creamed. It’s pathetic! so shut your trap!

….and thanks for being our battering ram…. hehe…. lol.

I can’t see how if Coach Richt loses the first one, in front of 90,000 fans, on National TV, that he saves his job. At some point, Richt runs out of excuses. Last year it was the first year d coach & qb, year before it was turnovers and penalties. If Coach Richt continues to find ways to lose these important games, you have to think this is the end of the road for him, as nice of a guy as he is. So let’s hope he figures out how to right the ship.

I don’t think year 1, the Dream Team will be the difference. Look at Florida last year. Had a top 2 recruiting class, and struggled all season. These guys have to have some time to learn the system. So for now, the veterans have to step up. Georgia’s putting a lot of hopes on a lot of year 1 starters who don’t know Georgia’s system yet, that usually doesn’t work out.

Those of you who think Murray sucks clearly don’t know football. The guy was a FRESHMAN last year, had over 3,000 yards and carried the offense!!! He plays with a crappy O-Line, a crappy running game, a crappy defense that can’t force a 3 and out to safe its life, and idiotic coaching– and put up huge numbers despite ALL of that. Trust me we can win with Murray, be he’s gotta have help. Murray is like the only bright spot on this team.

Briz, one thing to consider is that Georgia has had some pretty good teams in the past when they have not have the best O-line in the league. I’m sure a lot of other program could say the same thing. It’s probably going to take a couple more classes to get the line back to the point that most fans couldn’t really tell you how good or bad they really are, but they know they aren’t hearing about them and not too woried about it.

Better to have a dominating line of cource, but you “can” win with a very average Oline. Maybe not blow through the SEC but win a lot of games. What you can’t have is an average line AND a freshman QB, AND a first year defense AND various issue keeping your skill people actually on the field AND…….fill in blank. I think the small margins of UGA losses last yesar proves both point.

We could fix just 2 of those and still be ok/better with the exact same line. Fix 2 AND the Oline is only modestly better, and I think we are right there with anyone on our schedule.

Remind us of your record vs the SEC.

It’s about to get worse.

If you are dumb and blind enough to compare last year to this year, go right ahead.

Pettis and Young saved your butts against VT or you would have lost that game. They both graduated

Both teams strength will be defense. Lower scoring game than folks think.

Dawgs kicker is an All American. That’s the difference.

I would be a little nervous if I was Kellen Moore. I wouldn’t be surprised if his picture is posted on several lockers. Georgia will get to the quarterback early and it will get in his head.. Maybe even a score by the defense from the pressure. Aaron will manage a good game. Dawgs win 34-20.

Boise’s Offense really puts up points on ranked teams. But defense struggles.

Boise Averages against ranked teams: 32 on off, 32 on def
Georgia averages against ranked teams: 15 on off, 32 on def

So, Georgia will have to score at least 35 to win the game, and typically, Georgia only scores 15 or 16 against ranked teams.

Advantage Boise.

Bill’s point was that even losing, Georgia is still very much in control of its goals for the year. Boise would not.

Even 0-2 Georgia would still be very much in the rase that matters, since the East champ is certainly going to have one loss if not 2. (or 3 as in last year).

Bronco Billy,

Why do you think you are going for the national championship? After meeting with the NCAA enforcement committee tomorrow to answer the charge of “lack of institutional control”, you probably will not even be playing in a bowl game for two or more years.
Yes, you did beat Va. Tech. last year, and they followed up that loss with an impressive loss also to a lower division team. For some reason, Tech. has trouble getting the season going each year.
I don’t know that you will face a bigger D line than UGA will throw at you this year. You have a great QB, but no matter who the QB is, if he can’t get the time to set up and find his receivers, he has to throw where he can, so that might be a problem.
Should be a good game though.

Thanks to Ben for coming in here and offering an intelligent Boise fan POV. It’s nice to see that for every Ben, Boise has their own version of “Saint Simons” and his name is Bronco Billy.

Ben, you are welcome in here anytime and like most of the Georgia fans in here, I respect what you have to say and you are right, Boise doesn’t get a lot of folks who want to schedule them or go to the Smurf Turf in Idaho. And yep, this will be a home game for us.

You should have scheduled us last year when we had a new defensive scheme with no real personnel and our best offensive player on an unfair, 4 game suspension. While I fully believe your excellent coaching staff will prepare hard for this game, I think Richt and company know what’s at stake for us and need to make a statement in the worst way. Georgia needs this game for the sake of the entire program, Richt’s job and the conference, which is why I think we will win going away.

I would also say to you what’s been said already – the defense has been drastically upgraded this offseason. There was no Jarvis Jones, Kwame Geathers, Ray Drew or John Jenkins last year, and these guys are beasts. Alex Ogletree is now a sophomore and has a chance to become a first team all American at his position. Team speed kills and these guys will hit the way we did in the Sugar Bowl game with Hawaii.

If MR can get IC to pull his pants up, get rid of the gold plated teeth, and cut off all the dreads, Crowell may turn out to be a productive player. With MR’s track record with problem players it doesn’t appear on the surface this will be what will help the program improve. I hope I’m wrong, but I know the reprobates and kool-aid guzzlers wake up and see they have a UGa team of gold teethed, saggy pants, and rasta men littered all over the roster, they will turn on MR if football arrests climb again. I hate to sound prejudiced and judgemental, but as an admitted old-school Dawg my perceptions are controlled by what I see. And I don’t like the fact that the crown jewel of the last recruiting class is also by appearance a representative of thug-life. I feel this is MR’s final test, but he’ll lose even if he wins because of perceptions connected with this kids appearance. True UGa fans are tired and fed up of being fed gator excrement sandwiches, gaiteraid, and MR kool-aid, but if this experiment with IC backfires MR must flee UGa like a Libyan refugee before is own mindless, delusioned fanbase turns on him and breaks out the tar and feathers. LOL. I really hope I’m wrong but thug-life poster boys in the long run will add to our woes at Georgia. And the last thing we need is a potential Buckeye/So.Cal type scandals at UGa. Under Armour All-American OT out of Atlanta’s Cedar Grove High School and BAMA Commitment is ranked ahead of your next great hope, Theus. Georgia coaches knew all along that Greene is a better prospect, but chose to go after Theus instead. And we know why, don’t we Uga fans. When two prospects are close to one another in talent (which isn’t even the case here), we always know the direction Uga goes. Pitiful. This is why ya’ll are average. You deserve to be.

DawginLex,
Boise has a kicker coming in that kicked 58 and 57 yard FG`s in one game…….as a freshman in high school. He`s the all time leader in FG`s in California, and has been an All-State and All-American kicker and punter the last three seasons.
I know Georgia has a very good kicker, but I certainly don`t see a big advantage for Georgia in the kicking game.

I think Boise is Georgia’s biggest game in several years. Boise has enjoyed the “sneak” factor against most of the big names they have played and beaten. They are now in a different situation entirely. Rightly or wrongly they will probably be picked to win this game by a lot of, if not most, of the media. They will most certainly have the attention of Georgia’s players and staff. Georgia will have had as much time to prepare for them as vice versa. Richt’s teams no longer have any wiggle room for excuses. There is no reason not to see an highly motivated, energized Georgia team. This is a game I cannot wait to see and is going to set the stage for Georgia’s season. I’m not the expert most on the blogs seem to be so I’ll keep my prognostication to myself. However, I’d love some of the “66-3, Boise” action some troll keeps posting…

Now, why don’t you go back to Bama and sell some more books OK? Your players can’t do that anymore, so you and the likes of you, will have to do it for them.
Better even, go on some LSU or Arkansas blogs and spout something about them. I think they might just give you a little more than you want to handle this year. You add nothing to the UGA blogs as far as relevant discussion goes so maybe they will care about you over at those blogs.

Fact is; it’s the opening game for a strong team from a weak conference and a weak team from a strong conferemce. Both need to go into the game to win it without all the hipe and BS about nation rankings. Play the game and let the chips fall as they may. Georgia needs to worry about one game at the time, forget about what could have been, and just take care of the business at hand. Coach Richt needs to realize that each year his buyout gets smaller so the noose is getting tighter as time flies by. Bottom line for him is, it’s time he s#!+s of gets off the pot.
