Dogs could make or break Boise State’s season

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

The opening game could be everything for Boise State's national title hopes.

We all know what’s in it for the Dogs in opening against Boise State in the Georgia Dome. The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game is a “Hey, remember us?” game, a chance for Mark Richt’s program to make a statement that it’s still relevant on the national scene. Win or lose, at least UGA will be in the spotlight.

But as College Football News notes in its 2011 Boise State preview, the game could mean a whole lot more to the Broncos, who’ve spent the past few seasons trying to convince the college football world they routinely belong in the national championship conversation.

As CFN puts it, “The opening day battle with Georgia in Atlanta means everything” for Boise State. “Win that, and it’ll be another year of talking about whether or not the Broncos belong in the national title chase considering they’ll almost certainly be the favorites in the rest of the 11 games. … If they beat Georgia in the opener the expectations and the season changes; the national title will be in play.”

The Broncos’ other important game on Nov. 12 against TCU, probably for the Mountain West title, “might turn out to be just as big,” CFN says, “but the season for Boise State, and for college football, might hinge on the performance in front of the hostile crowd in Atlanta. Last year, the Broncos were able to do it against Virginia Tech on the road and the national title expectations kicked in. The same might be true with a win over the Dawgs.”

Beating Boise State would get an important season off to a great start for Richt, but the fact is that for Georgia’s overall season hopes the SEC game a week later in Athens against South Carolina is more important.

But if Boise State loses to the Dogs, the argument could be made their ultimate hopes for the season are toast.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to which team wants it more, because that’s likely to be the Broncos.

But as Richt likes to say, no pressure.

JT2!

The Texas Rangers made Major League Baseball look awfully good with their classy gesture drafting paralyzed Diamond Dog Johnathan Taylor. Dawgs Online was exactly right saying the Bulldog Nation now has a new favorite American League team. Meanwhile, to find out how you can still donate to the Johnathan Taylor Fund, check out Georgiadogs.com.

DANTE, WE HARDLY KNEW YE

Georgia baseball signee Dante Bichette Jr. of Orlando, son of former Rockies outfielder Dante Bichette Sr., was one of seven UGA current players and 11 signees picked in the MLB draft. It’s apparent now that he’ll never don the Red and Black, and you can’t blame him for taking an estimated $700,000 signing bonus straight out of high school.

“I told the coaches that if I went in the first round, I was going to go pro,” Bichette told the Athens Banner-Herald. As for UGA, he said, “I couldn’t have picked a better school to work with. The way they handled it was perfect. They even told me that if I went in the first round, I should go play pro ball. They’re behind me 100 percent. I’ll always be a Dog in my heart.”

Woof!

BRONOCBILLY – You are correct Sir. Mr. King is already making excuses saying this game is not important to UGA. They are most underachieving team I’ve seen in a long time. It is where talent is wasted or winds up in jail. BSU wins this game easily. 55-19

The pressure is really on Murray. He went 0-6 against winning teams last season, and if Murray doesn’t get his 1st win against Boise, you’d have to agree, at 0-7 against winning teams, Richt would have to make a change before the South Carolina game, it’s just too big of a game. It will be interesting to see if Murray handles the pressure better, since Richt named Murray Spring MVP, expectations for Murray are through the roof to play like an MVP.

Crowell & Jenkins will also have a lot of pressure on them because of all the pre-season hype. Tavarres King & Charles will also be feeling unreal pressure.

The season hinges on how these 5 do.

I got Boise 55 to 24.

Bronco, you said you’ve watched UGA last 2 years and the Dawgs haven’t been competitive? Humm pretty close game against AU last year, close game against Ark last year..close game against SC last year..I wonder how the Bronco’s would have faired in those games??
This sin’t some ACC team, some MID west untested program. THIS IS GEORGIA. I know some of these players, its a total mind set change a big chip on there shoulders and a D that wants to hurt people and send a message to the rest of the SEC and nation..This is 2011 and this is UGA. More speed, more aggression, and more passion that past few years. Boise won’t get blown out, but the will get beat. 24-10 , D and special teams making the difference. GO DAWGS

If THuga wins that first game you will have thought they just won the national championship (which by the way feels REALLY nice!!). There’ll be more barking and chest thumping than any fanbase ever displayed after just one game. You’ll start hearing predictions of a dynasty in athens!! All it takes is one win (and unfortunately for the rest of us, THuga has already built this into the greatest sporting event since the Olympics) for college football to begin hearing how THuga is the greatest team in college football history!! Give them the NC right then and there!!

And then usc south will come in and beat ‘em.

I think it will be a close, fairly low scoring game. It will turn on Murray’s ability to avoid critical mistakes and the quality of our kicking game. The defense will do its job in keeping it close. It is a huge game for UGA, too. That loss on a national stage with our expectations for improvement could drive a stake thru the heart of the team. You know we’ll be calling for the moving vans to pull in front of Richt’s house, and the rest of the season will be a swan song for this coaching staff if the SC game turns into a disaster.

I remember Georgia ran an unusual offense the last two years I saw them.

They ran most of their plays out of the old “I” formation but they were not a power team.

In fact, they threw the ball a lot out of it with lengthy drops and rolls, so our DBs will need to hold their coverages longer than usual. However, this should give our front some great opportunities for sacks and some scoops and scores.

The strength of Georgia’s team were the receivers, who often made amazing plays out of inaccurate or late throws, especially in the game Hawk coached against them.

The defense was adjusting to a new scheme and seemed to have the middle bottled up well in the games I saw, but had lots of problems tackling runners in space. This gives our type of offense many opportunities.

Georgia’s opponents didn’t pass much so I couldn’t tell how they are in pass coverage in the games I saw.

I also remember Georgia’s kickers were good, but I am not sure if they are returning.

My two cents.

Ben, Boise does not get an invite to a BCS conf. as they do not bring any money to the table. I’m not saying it is right but that is the way it is. It is not fear of their football team. If anything there is a fear that after the current coach and AD leaves the conf. will be stuck with an average mid major with a small TV market.

Yes this ia a big game for Boise a win over a SEC school especially won that has won the conf. in the past decade puts them in the national title race.

It should also be the biggest game of CMR’s HC career. I do not want to ehar from other fan that UGA was the team that opened the door for Boise. Boise is more important than Florida or GT this year.

Bronco Billy, I honestly think the only comparison to this year’s squad from last year’s is basic schemes. Our strength is better, players are bigger (even the PK put on nine pounds!) and the D has a year of Grantham’s defense under their belt. Our Achilles heel is our OC, IMO….but even that should be ok as long as our defense holds up.

BSU does play in a weak conf but as of late when they step out and play the big boys (VT, OK) they do surprisingly well. You cannot take them for granted. They score lots of points and what should worry dawg fans is GA is not playing good D and give up too many points. Jenkins, et al, is GA’s hope to beating Boise. I doubt GA will stop their QB from putting points on the board unless the D overwhelms Boise as it did when GA beat them in Athens. However, if the DC follows the same game plan as he did last season and lay back most of the time we’re dead meat.

Classy move by the Rangers drafting JT. Shame on the Braves.

Boise State carefully selected Georgia for this game. First, they play a weak schedule which tends to keep them out of the BCS championship game even if they go undefeated. Second, the SEC has won the last five BCS championships. To get into the BCS championship game, Boise needs to beat an historically strong SEC team. However, they dont want to play a strong team such as Alabama, LSU, Auburn or Fla. They want to play an SEC team they perceive as vulnerable such as Georgia to pad their scedule. I predict this will backfire on them and UGA wins 34 to 21.

I am already nervous about this game! It means so much to both teams. If the Dawgs lose Boise State has the argument that they deserve to play in the championship because they beat an SEC team, the hardest division there is. But if the Dawgs win with a lot of the nation watching that game it could mean great things!! GO DAWGS!!! Beat the Broncos!!

As a Dawg fan, I of course hope that we can beat Boise State. But I temper that optimism with the reality of our offensive line woes, which I think are hugely significant and will hold us back all season. Dawg fans need to brace for another underwhelming season, and frankly I hope that we’re able to keep it respectable against the Broncos and not get blown out, which is a real possibility.

UGA wasn’t a team who handled big games well last season.

South Carolina? Offense couldn’t score, or rush, and turnovers hurt.
Miss St? Offense couldn’t score.
Ark? Defense couldn’t get stops.
Florida? Too many turnovers. Defense couldn’t get stops.
UCF? Too many turnovers.

I think we win a sloppy game and it will be absolutely no indication of how our season will turn out. Boise is a poser football program and a phony. They wouldn’t last two weeks in the SEC. I’ll like the way our football program is headed when we can beat Florida and make it back to the SECCG.

This is a pointless game. We don’t need another pizz ant team on our schedule from a pizz ant conference. We already play Tech every year.

Thanks.

billy,
UGA returns the two best kickers in College, atleast each in top 5, not bragging, look it up. Also one of the top 5 return guys in all of college, if it comes down to special teams, UGA has the edge. The only way Boise wins this game is your QB has to make it in the air and hope that smaller line can hold off the Dawgs D long enough. The onlt soft spot on the UGA team is going to be secondary. but then it did look better toward the last part of the year, and have all returning back this year. Boise is a team that can beat you through the air, i hope it doesn’t happen but it Boise wins that will be what it takes
