Some quick hits from across the Bulldog Nation …
Mark Richt laughed off Florida coach Will Muschamp’s guarantee of a win over Georgia this year when asked about it Tuesday night at a fan gathering, the Albany Herald reports. “I thought that was a good thing coming from him,” Richt said at the Doublegate Country Club. “I heard about it right away, but I also know how those things happen. That’s why I don’t answer some questions.”
Richt did answer other questions, though, including addressing the status of running back Caleb King: “We expect Caleb to be here in the fall.” And as for walk-on Brandon Harton, who was a surprising third on the tailback depth chart released this week, Richt said, “Our best runner in the spring was Harton. Is he ready for the SEC? We’ll see. But we expect him to compete for a job.”
The key to success for the 2011 Dogs, Richt said: “We have to stay healthy. That, and we need some of our upperclassmen like [Orson] Charles, [Christian] Robinson and [Ben] Jones to really step up and show our younger guys what to do.”
Meanwhile, Dawgs 247 reports that prior to the Albany appearance Richt talked a bit about how big John Jenkins and an improved Kwame Geathers might both play on the defensive line at the same time. Richt noted that last year in passing situations Georgia usually pulled its nose guard and went with two defensive ends and the outside linebackers applying pressure “because we didn’t really have that nose guard.” But if the nose guard is “worthy of staying in the game and rushing the passer, you might have those two big o’l boys in there” as the interior linemen in the nickel package, he said, referring to Jenkins and Geathers.
DREW READY TO PUSH
We talked yesterday about which of Georgia’s incoming freshmen might push for early playing time. The Athens Banner-Herald talked with one of them, the Rev. Ray Drew, who noted, “just because I’m a freshman doesn’t mean I’m going to come in and sit back. Every football player, if you ask them, they’d rather be on the football field than on the sideline any day. That’s really what I want to go in and do.” As for starting outside linebacker Cornelius Washington, Drew said: “I want to at least push him for it a little bit. Let him work for it.”
GOOD SECOND-PLACE FINISHES
Sometimes coming in second isn’t so bad. Considering what an off year the marquee football team had, it’s noteworthy that UGA still managed to take second place in the SEC all-sports competition sponsored by the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group, finishing behind only Florida. The Dogs were second in overall men’s competition and third in women’s and were helped by SEC championships in men’s tennis and women’s swimming and diving. Georgia last won the All-Sports Trophy in 2005-2006. … Meanwhile, the UGA football team tied Florida for second place behind Vanderbilt in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate listings released Tuesday. Eight UGA teams were among the top three in the conference in the APR scores, which measure eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. All of Georgia’s teams were well above the cut-off that triggers penalties.
GO HINES!
I don’t watch talent competition shows on TV and only ever caught one of Hines Ward’s performances on “Dancing With the Stars” when I was at someone else’s house, but I’m very happy Ward won the competition Tuesday. And I’m also pleased that after he did so he gave a shout out to the Bulldog Nation as well as to Pittsburgh Steelers fans. Classy move, Hines.

Harton is where he is because he was healthy and actually got some work in the spring. No one expects him to stay there.
I’m not going to post as much. Chip has banned me and I’m sick and tired of what we have to put up with on these blogs.
I will be seeking another place to blog.

Oh yeah. Like wearing black helmets? That worked really well.
If UGA football players aren’t “motivated” to play ANY game, well . . .
For Mark Richt’s sake, they better be more motivated than they were vs UCF.

Can you imagine trying to block Jenkins and Geathers at the same time? Not mentioning Abry Jones and DeAngelo Tyson who both weight over 300 pounds themselves. Jenkins and Geathers weight over 700 pounds together and that’s muscle. Georgia muscle. I don’t think you can handle that. You just can’t. Along with bull-rushing linebackers backing them up. This defense could be nasty.

RabidDawgFan,
Puhleeze. I don’t think anyone is scared of the Georgia defensive front. And if King- an average back at best- doesn’t get his stuff together then you’re looking at a walk on tailback and a freshman incoming tailback to carry the load? And a walk on as the 2nd team left tackle. One or 2 key injuries and you guys are in Vandy status. As it stands now you’re just barely above Vandy status. Barely.

Jenkins & Geathers as passrushers? Huh, is Richt serious? Sure, 2 big guys to stop the run makes sense, but 2 big guys out of 3 as passrushers?
Probabl;y an attempt to try and throw Boise off. It didn’t work last year trying to throw teams off with weird off season interview claims, as Richt went 6-7.

@ Rest of the SEC,
Name a better defensive front 7 than UGA right now in the SEC. Don’t say Alabama because they no longer have Dareus so that leaves a huge void. We have Abry Jones, DeAngelo Tyson, John Jenkins, Kwame Geathers, Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree, Christian Robinson, and Cornelius Washington/Ray Drew. Come on man! That’s an All-SEC front 7 right there. One of the fastest linebacking core in the country. How can you run on that?
DE: Abry Jones
NG: Kwame Geathers & John Jenkins
DE: DeAngelo Tyson
OLB: Jarvis Jones
ILB: Alec Ogletree
ILB: Christian Robinson
OLB: Cornelius Washington

With a front 7 like we have, our secondary can look great. If we can create pressure with our linebackers and our 3 down linemen, then we could be scary good on defense. Not to mention we are in year 2 in the defense, and that’s usually when things start to click for players. They can play faster because they know exactly what to do. We are under a new strength and conditioning program with Coach T and they are bigger (I noticed at the G-day game). Those guys have gotten so much bigger. They’re freakin huge. And they’re only going to build on that throughout the offseason and be ready to start preseason camp in August. I can’t wait.

the running game will be this:
King
Crowell
Malcome
Smith
Marshall
Ogletree
figgins
The wide outs will be:
King
Bennett
Brown
Smith
Tight ends:
Charles
White
Lynch
The defense is the key. With defensive improvement from 22 PPG to 14 or 15, we could play Dooley ball and only throw it 15-20 times a game. Bobo has to change the gameplan from the past and get with Richt and Friend and decide to do it. The 1st team OL is good enough to do it.
Whole change in mindset.

Jim….every player on our front 7 has had significant playing time. Tyson, Ogletree, Robinson, Jones (Abry) were starters last season. Each one of them though have had lots of playing time. Jarvis Jones got here last season but played at USC before transferring here so he’s not a rookie, John Jenkins has played at the JUCO ranks (how did it work out for Terrence Cody, Nick Fairley, and Cam Newton?), Washington has played extensively, Geathers has played quite a bit and dominated Ben Jones in spring, so I’d say he’s ready. We really don’t have anybody that inexperienced besides Ray Drew and he’s coming in as a freshman.

Doesn’t matter where they started Jim, the fact of the matter is they have real-game experience. I’d think it’s harder to play free safety as a college freshman at a big time program but Ogletree did it and yes he got beat a couple of times but he showed flashes of brilliance and he’s only going to get better. They move him to LB because of his speed and his hitting ability. He’ll be able to make a lot more plays. He runs like a safety/corner but hits like a LB. He’ll be an All-SEC player.
On Tyson, he took one for the team. He even stated before the season started that he’d rather play DE, but they put him at nose simply because there was no one else. Now he’s in his regular position and he’s comfortable and he’ll be a good player for us.
You just watch and see.

Washington, Robinson, Jones, didn’t do much of anything in their limited starts. Jenkins has 0 games in Div 1. You basically have a Front 7, with practically 0 experience at their positions. 2011 going to be a huge learning curve for the Front 7, they’ll lose a lot of games like 2009 & 2010 teams, but should be good in 2012, so don’t give up hope just yet.

You know I am glad that college football tried another forward pass after Saint Louis University attempted the first one in 1906 only to throw it incomplete and turn the ball over. Imagine that, if the coach after failing that one time never tried it again. Then no other coaches ever attempted it.
My point? Who gives a crap about how Floridas front seven faired last year against Alabama. Every year every team goes through youth and lack of exp in college ball. If this is a rally cry then 100 out of 112 FBS teams might as well fold up shop.

That’s right Lowcountry, every team has had their share of down seasons or seasons that don’t go accordingly. But that’s football. Football is a game of inches. And one crucial mistake can cost you the ballgame. Alabama went 6-6 in 2007 and lost to a powerhouse known as Louisiana-Monroe (sarcasm abundantly) but no one says anything about that? They lost to Utah in 08, not a word said. And yes Alabama has proven themselves but why not give Georgia a chance to do the same thing? Wait and see what we have on the field in 2011 before we make any assumptions because if we come out firing and lighting people up on both sides of the ball, there are going to be a lot of people eating crow and a lot of people looking dumb, including that Jim guy.

How are Fairley and Cody exceptions to the rule? That’s your rule right? There’s laws out here in the world that says if you commit a crime you go to jail…do you think that if Terrence Cody or Nick Fairley committed a crime they don’t go to jail? No they go to jail just like everyone else so if they are not an exception to the rule of the law, then they are no where near an exception of football. Terrence Cody comes from the exact same place that Jenkins is coming from. Until we see what Jenkins is made of, I don’t want to hear you bash him saying he has no experience. He might be just as good as Cody or even better.

Can your OL stay healthy, and will your lack of depth on the OL limit what you can do physically? In other words, will you remain a finesse type offense to prevent injuries to your offensive line. The drop in talent is significant from the 1st unit to 2nd. It’s unfortunate because this was the year to have a physical AND deep offensive line to take advantage of, for example, a team like Auburn, that suffered signifcant losses on their defensive line. Richt needed to tighten up his recruitment of physical, athletic, in-state OLs. Too many studs have left the state and are lining up for your competition.

Richt loses to winning teams, and wins against most losing teams.
In 2010, Richt went 0-6 against winning teams, and 1-5 against teams with a losing record,.
Richt will lose to all of the these teams that will finish with a winning record:
1) Boise 2) SC 3) MSU 4) Tenn 5) Florida 6) Auburn 7) Georgia Tech
Richt will also lose to Kentucky, who will finish with a losing record 5-7. Remember, Richt lost to Colorado last year.
Richt will finish 4 & 8 and will never head coach at a major D1 school.
The trend direction is headed towards 4 & 8:
11 wins in 07′, 10 wins in 08′, 8 wins in 09′, 6 wins in 10′, 4 wins in 11′?

They don’t bring up that we won 2 SEC titles with him, they don’t bring up that we have had lots and lots of players come through here and become All-Americans, All-SEC players, and go on to get drafted. He doesn’t mention that UGA is in the top 2 in the SEC in players drafted. He doesn’t mention that UGA has had a player go in the top 4 in two of the past 3 drafts and two in the top 15 in 2009 when Stafford and Moreno were drafted in the top 15 overall. No, they don’t mention the good. Just the bad.

Even UGA fans are split 50/50 on Richt, so there’s really no bad or good side, both sides are 50. ESPN thinks Richt’s in the most trouble of any SEC coach and South Carolina will win the East, Scout says Richt’s on a hotseat and the 2011 UGA team isn’t good enough to save Richt’s job.
Again, if you like 12% odds of Richt winning more games than the year before, which he has only done 1x in last 8 seasons, and if you prefer going against the experts at ESPN & Scout, feel free.

All bloggers who disagree with your posts MUST be labeled as Tech or Auburn fans Really? It’s a big world, people have different opinions, get over it.
A lot of UGA fans are unhappy with Richt’s performance in the last several seasons. If McGarity chooses to keep a coach on, who loses so many games, and can’t fix his own problems, then yes, you get a lot of heat.
If you like 12% odds, pull for Richt winning 7 games or more.
If you like 88% odds, you’ll feel Richt will win 5 games or less.
Out of last 8 seasons, Richt wins less games than previous year 88%.

I think Black helmets rolled out the day of a game was more of an interest factor, a diversion at best. Not real sure why anyone talks about that in terms of a “motivation” ploy. How does that work anyway?
Reminding a team of what somebody said about guaranteeing them losing thier game, over and over, for a few months,on the boards of the workout room, and talked about the weeks leading up to that game certainly would be considered a motivational tool.
There really is no comparison between the two is there?

Interesting math puzzle here. If in 10 year a coach win 5 games or less, never, what are his chances? Wouldn’t there also be a 90% chance of him winning more than 5?
And maybe I don’t underdstand what “losing more than the season before” means, but wouldn’t that have to be an 8 loss season to hold up to your 88% bet?

Wait…so now the team, UGA which was run over like a possum by Ga Tech and its cornerback changed to QB and was whipped by Central Florida is going to become the nightmares of college football?
Their defense was awful and their offense couldn’t score against Central freaking Florida and they lost all of their only SEC calibre talent, but they are now going to bring a college football dominating team off the bench???
One question…why did Richt hide all these supermen on the bench last season while UGA was going an embarrassing 6-7???
Reality that UGA is going to struggle hughly on offense with no RBs, no WR, average OL and despite the hype a QB who as 0-6 against winning teams.
If the players shown at the Spring game are what is going to hit the field in September, UGA is in deep trouble, small LBs and slow CB may cut it against the 5-6 160lb running backs which UGA was running but not against real SEC calibre talent. The kid at SC outweighs UGA LBs and is two step faster also???
Just don’t starting cursing your players and coaches this fall because they can’t match your delusiional expectations.

Like I say all the time its people like you that DO NOT help the program. I assure you there is no one standing in line wanting to come to Athens, Coach Richt would get hired in a heartbeat if he wasn’t at UGA. So if you could go to a game & make the stadium a tough place to play like it used to be in the 70’s & 80’s, then do it. Otherwise it will continue to be one of the softer places to play in the SEC due to fans like you & all the other negative people on this blog. I DO SUPPORT Coach Richt & DO SUPPORT our players. Kool-aid drinkers are getting drunk off the Richt juice again. Best front 7 in the SEC? Try 3rd best in SEC East behind Fl, and S.C. Robinson hasn’t made a big play in 2 years, and the same can be said for Washington. J.J. only made plays on the scout team last year, along with Samuel. Geathers dominating Ben Jones is no big deal, every noseguard in the SEC did that last year. Jenkins want contribute until next year, same as Mt.Cody, and Fairley did at Bama and Auburn. Tyson hasn’t done anything in 3 years, and Abry Jones only showed up in Tech game where he made 16 tackles, because they ran the ball 80 plays. Don’t think that is the best front 7 in the SEC. Nobody on that front 7 scares any Offensive Coordinator. Houston was the only playmaker, and he is gone. Sorry, but it’s time for Richt and his staff to show me and the rest of UGA fans something on the field, or it’s time for him to sell his house in Athens as well.

Murray getting lots of love from writers across the south along with Tyler Wilson from Arkansas. Look for them to be 1 and 2 for preseason ALL SEC.
Anybody that doesn’t think our defense won’t be better isn’t paying attention. The question is can the offense score just enough and avoid turnovers.
I’d rather punts 8 or 9 times and have no turnovers and only score 17 points and win versus 3 or 4 turnovers allowing easy scores that no defense can stop and lose.

On who will be the conference’s next first round NFL quarterback?
LSU’s Jordan Jefferson. C’mon Tiger fans, you gotta laugh or you’ll cry.
Given what is clearly a down year (again) for the conference at the position (in terms of breadth), some would consider this a difficult question. Outside of Chris Relf at MSU and Stephen “throw me a party” Garcia at SC, there’s very little experience – very little in the form of an extended track record to support such a claim for any quarterback. With perhaps the lone exception of UGA’s talented redshirt sophomore Aaron Murray.
Yes, it was just a single year – but what a year. Murray set a freshman record by passing for more than 3,000 yards, while posting a stellar quarterback rating of 167. He may have started slowly and put up some of his gaudiest numbers against his weaker opponents, but who doesn’t? Besides, outside of the Beltway, numbers don’t lie…
Murray ended the season as the most prolific frosh in Georgia school history (3,216 total offensive yards) – which was good enough for second best in SEC lore. He also tied a Bulldog record for the most TD passes ever thrown in one season (24), and ran for four more. Which rhymes with lore.
For these reasons, and the fact that he’s eligible following this year, we’ll take Mr,. Murray

Barrett Sallee: On which team has the most riding on the QB position?
It has to be the Georgia Bulldogs. Aaron Murray enters his sophomore season not only as the SEC’s top quarterback, but the quarterback in the conference with the most pressure on his shoulder pads. The natives are restless in Athens, and if Murray suffers a (redshirt) sophomore slump, not only will the fan base be unhappy, but head coach Mark Richt may be looking for a job in January.
There’s no denying how good Murray was during his freshman season. His freshman numbers – 209-of-304 for 3,049 yards, 24 touchdowns and only eight interceptions – eclipsed those of Georgia legend David Greene. Not bad company to be in, to say the least. It sounds crazy, but a repeat performance from Murray almost seems expected at this point, despite the loss of leading receiver A.J. Green and leading rusher Washaun Ealey.
Murray is in a very unique position: not only does Richt’s employment hinge on his ability to lead an offense that’s chock-full of question marks, but the Dawgs also have a schedule that’s soft enough to make the SEC East championship a legitimate possibility. The division is wide open, and if Murray can lead his team to a victory over South Carolina in Week 2, it should be “Atlanta Or Bust” for the Bulldogs.
Is it unfair to say that Murray need win a division championship to save his coach’s job? Probably. But that’s the position that the sophomore from Tampa finds himself in – mostly

We can only hope. Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Miles and other coaches represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 100:1.
Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.

Complain about CMR all you want, and add fuel to the already over abundance of negative comments about UGA and CMR, but who do you have in mind? Do you want a win at all cost coach? How about a coach that will lie at the drop of a hat? How about a coach that will tell you all what you want to hear? There are plenty of those out there, in fact, quite a few of those in the SEC. If it is win at all cost, and watch your university be put on probation, once a decade, there are plenty of those out there also.

Now that kid is gonna be a load and the focal point of their offense most likely. Malcolm can be pretty good though, so maybe he will step it up in the fall practices. If he gets his blocking assignment down, UGA will use him. I am still of the opinion that it will take Crowell, a few games at the very least, to get up to speed. The play book and having to block at all, will all be brand new to him.

Why is Mark Richt still in Athens?
Fire him now and hire a winning coach.
